She is London’s first state wrestling champ
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The community of London never thought
they’d see the day that Grace Jones, a student-athlete
with a sterling reputation, was
escorted through town by police. Yet that is
exactly what happened in the early evening
hours of Feb. 23.
After Jones left a state wrestling championship
in which she competed, she and
her family were intercepted by a slew of
cruisers at the county line. With the cruiser
lights flashing and a crowd of onlookers
hoisting signs, the 16-year-old was equal
parts proud and embarrassed.
“It was just crazy,” she said.
Instead of rerouting the high school junior
to the station for booking, law enforcement
escorted Jones to London High School
where she rang the victory bell for making
it into the school’s history books.
Since demanding that she be enrolled in
the London Wrestling Club’s peewee division
at the age of 5, Jones has dreamed of
becoming a champion. She knew it was a
tall order—after all, she was one of only a
handful of girls in the county and state to
participate in the sport—but that didn’t stop
her from envisioning the moment she would
reign supreme.
“I knew it would be hard and maybe even
unlikely, but I wanted to try to be the best,”
she said.
Upon joining the wrestling team at London
High School her sophomore year, Jones
noticed an increase in girls competing in the
sport—not at her school, though try as she
might to recruit, but throughout the state.
Members of the Ohio High School
Wrestling Coaches Association noticed the
trend, too.
“We had started to see a spike in female
wrestlers enrolling in their school’s programs
a few years back,” said Dominic DiSabato,
past president of the association. “We
knew eventually there would be enough
participants to be able to host a state championship
for girls, but we knew we were not
there yet.”
Then 2019 came around and suddenly
there were enough.
“In 2018, there were roughly 250 girls
registered to wrestling teams, and the fol-
It was time, he said, that a girls’ state
wrestling championship be held.
When the news broke that the inaugural
championship would fall on the weekend of
Feb. 22, 2020, Jones was ecstatic. But then
she realized it would conflict with a team
appearance at the Central Buckeye Conference
tournament.
She spoke to her teammates about the
conundrum, and the response was unanimous:
go follow your dreams.
“I had their support and that meant
everything to me,” she said.
Ranked first in the 116-pound weight
class, Jones set off on Feb. 22 for Hilliard-
Davidson High School, site of the championship.
Though the favorite, Jones said she
knew not to be overly confident.
Sterling hires code enforcer
By Andrew Garrett
Staff Writer
Mount Sterling village council elected to
hire a code enforcement officer in its continued
effort to keep the village in good physical
order. The decision came at council’s
regular meeting on Feb. 24.
Mayor Marci Darlington named 49-yearold
non-resident Scott Lind to the position.
“I look forward to working with you guys
and getting the place cleaned up,” he said.
Lind was resistant to speak too much
about his background given the unpopular
reception he might receive from some village
residents given the nature of his duties.
Council decided to go with someone who
lives outside of the immediate area to hopefully
circumnavigate any possible unpleasant
interactions.
Lind is scheduled to start at the beginning
of March.
The code enforcement officer is the
“frontline” in the effort to maintain a beautiful
village, according to council member
Becky Martin, chair of the village’s nuisance
and abatement committee. A part-time position,
the officer will spend 10 hours per
week identifying and tagging “nuisance” violations
of village code.
Once identified and tagged, violations
will then be up to the village solicitor to enforce,
Martin said. Fines and fees (such as
might be incurred when the village has to
mow a derelict lawn) that are not paid in a
timely manner will be assessed to the
owner’s property taxes.
The nuisance and abatement committee
is working out fines and timeframes for residents to redress any violations.
A list of nuisance laws can be found by accessing the “Nuisance
and Abatement” page on the village website, mtsterling.org.
Council also passed on emergency a resolution accepting the discontinuation
of services provided by the Fayette County Zoning and
Building Department. The resolution essentially is a “cleaning up
of last details” as the village transitions to using West Jefferson for
its zoning inspection services, according to council member Andrew
Drake.
March 20 deadline
for ag incentives
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation
Service (NRCS) announced that March 20 is the deadline
to submit applications for Ohio’s Environmental Quality Incentives
Program (EQIP).
EQIP is a voluntary conservation program that helps producers
make conservation work for them. Together, NRCS and producers
invest in solutions that conserve natural resources for the future
while also improving agricultural operations.
Through EQIP, NRCS provides agricultural producers with financial
resources and one-on-one help to plan and implement improvements,
or what NRCS calls conservation practices. Using
these practices can lead to cleaner water and air, healthier soil and
better wildlife habitat, all while improving agricultural operations.
Financial assistance is available in a variety of agricultural categories,
such as cropland, forestry, pasture operations, and organic.
Several special projects are also available that address water quality,
forestry management, improving pollinator populations and
wildlife habitat, pasture improvements and many more. All available
agricultural categories are listed on the Ohio NRCS website
under “EQIP Application Deadlines.”
To participate in USDA conservation programs, applicants
should be farmers or farm or forest landowners and must meet eligibility
criteria. Applications signed and submitted to NRCS by the
March 20 deadline will be evaluated for fiscal year 2020 funding.
To learn more about EQIP or other technical and financial assistance
available through NRCS conservation programs, visit “Get
Started with NRCS” or visit the local USDA Service Center, 831
London city auditor resigns, replacement sought
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The city of London is without an auditor.
Mayor Patrick Closser announced the
news at the Feb. 20 city council meeting.
Lora Long, who was elected to a full
term as auditor this past November, has
stepped down.
According to Closser, Long tendered her
resignation on Feb. 18. She finished her official
duties that same day, choosing not to
give a two-week notice.
Long cited difficulties resulting from a
switch in the city’s payroll system as the
main reason for her resignation.
“Working with a third party company
during this time made for a very rough Lora Long
transition,” she said.
Long was originally appointed to the auditor position by the
Madison County Republican Central Committee in 2018 after the
previous auditor pled guilty to theft in office for failure to reimburse
the city for his own health insurance costs and for an unauthorized
pay increase for a fellow employee.
The Republican Central Committee has 45 days to appoint a
new auditor. Anyone interested in the position is invited to send a
was able to sneak up on people,” she said. “Throughout the tournament,
I was on edge knowing that there were underdogs looking to
come out on top.”
After a first-round bye, Jones pinned Jordyn Hoffman of Tinora
High School in less than a minute. In the second match of the day,
Jones pinned Jada Shafer of Minerva High School in 1:23. That win
propelled her to the semi-finals on Feb. 23.
Jones’s nerves were amplified. The crowd was raucous, she was
facing much tougher competition, and her mother, Sherri, kept
mentioning how she had to conserve her phone battery to take a
picture when Jones won.
“We were trying to take her mind off of things with jokes like
we always do,” Sherri said, “but she really wasn’t having it right
then.”
Jones’s teammates arrived, including Brady Fisher, her longtime
training partner who led her through drills and went over
match strategies. Finally, it was time for the semi-finals, where
Jones was pitted against Shi’anna Bamba, a freshman wrestling
sensation from Massillon Perry. Jones pinned her in the third period.
For three hours, Jones waited to compete in the title match
against Ellie Paterra of Indian Creek, ranked second at 116-
pounds. When the match finally happened, it was one of the toughest
of Jones’s career.
“She was big and strong,” Jones said of Paterra.
For more than seven minutes, No. 1 and No. 2 clashed on the
mat, competing their hearts out in what was dubbed the best match
of the tournament by some commentators. With the points tied at
4-4 with less than 30 second left in the third period, Jones knew
she had to make a move.
As the clock ticked down, Paterra had Jones on the bottom, looking
like she might take the win. Then Jones fought her way to the
top position with a smooth reversal just as time ran out. With that
win, Jones became the first girl in the state to win a championship
in the 116-pound weight class, and the first wrestler (boy or girl)
at London High School to win a state championship.
She largely credits her win to her teammates.
“They have had me try to get out of that move so much in practice,”
she said. “I don’t think I would be where I am today without
them.”
Jones said the weekend championship and its aftermath has
been a whirlwind of emotion. Still, in the
quieter moments, she said she can reflect on
what a momentous occasion this state
championship was for her, for the community,
and for the sport she loves.
“I hope that this inspires more girls in
the community, around the county and
throughout the state to want to participate
in wrestling,” she said. “I want them to see
this tournament and these achievements
and come away saying, ‘Yeah, I want to try
that.’”
More than 250 female wrestlers competed
in the inaugural Girls State Wrestling
Championship, sponsored by the Ohio High
School Wrestling Coaches Association. DiSabato
said that in the future, he believes the
state championship will be sanctioned by
the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
“I believe it’s going to happen,” he said.
“Sooner, rather than later.”
resume and/or letter of interest to
Nicholas Adkins, committee chairman,
at nickadkinslaw@gmail.com.
Interviews will be conducted at 6
p.m. March 16 at London city hall,
20 S. Walnut St.
“(Lora) is moving on to other
ventures in her life, and we wish
her the best of luck in the future
and thank her for her service to the
city,” Closser said.
Long’s departure will not affect
the abilities of the city’s offices to
perform their duties in a timely
manner, Closser said, as the city
has already brought in outside help
to get “everything squared away.”
The announcement of Long’s
resignation came after council
member Josh Peters called for an unscheduled
executive session for the purpose of discussing
personnel. Closser and Joe Mosier,
the city’s safety service director, were invited
to take part. The executive session
lasted less than five minutes.
In regular business, council passed several
pieces of legislation, including:
• a resolution setting aside $10,000 to purchase fireworks for
this year’s July 4th celebration;
• a resolution authorizing the safety service director to apply
for an Ohio Emergency Services grant; and
• a resolution authorizing the safety service director to apply for
a fire marshal’s grant through the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office.
The next regular meeting of London city council is 6:30 p.m.
Best season finish ever
for indoor track team
Bryant sets school
records in high jump
and 200-meter dash
The Madison-Plains High School boys’
indoor track team had its most successful
end to a season ever, finishing as runner-up
in Division 2/3 at the Central District Indoor
Championships, held Feb. 23 at Capital
University in Bexley.
The Golden Eagles finished with 55
points, just behind champion Bishop Hartley
(61) and ahead of third-place Jonathan
Alder (53).
Since the program’s inception in 1995,
the team had never finished higher than
sixth place at the district meet, which traditionally
marks the culmination of the regular
season.
Junior Paul Bryant was the meet’s high
scorer, personally accounting for 27 points.
Bryant won both the high jump—with a new
school record of 6 feet 3 inches—and the
triple jump (38 feet 5.25 inches). He also finished
third in the 200-meter dash with a
time of 24.80 seconds, another school
record, and his 7.12 seconds in the 55-meter
dash was good enough for eighth place.
Jon Martin, another junior, added a
third-place finish in the triple jump (33 feet
11 inches) and finished fifth in the long
jump with a season-best leap of 17 feet 2.25
inches.
The Golden Eagles also placed two athletes
in the top three in the weight throw.
Sophomore Tylor Hoover added over six feet
to his career-best; his toss of 37 feet 3 inches
earned him second place. Senior Titus Wilson
finished third with his effort of 30 feet
5 inches.
Joey Grigsby completed the team’s scoring
with his fifth-place finish in the 800-
meter run with a time of 2 minutes 25.2
seconds. The senior’s race was significant
because of the meet’s time schedule and the
Golden Eagles’ small, eight-man lineup.
Grigsby was the only top-5 finisher who had
also run the 1600-meter just over 30 minutes
before.
Junior Ken Shafer (1600 meters and 800
meters), junior Evan Fisher (pole vault) and
sophomore Roger Doughman (long jump
and pole vault) also competed for Madison-
Plains, with Shafer and Doughman turning
in career-best efforts in the 1600 meters and
the long jump, respectively.
Freshman Amy Burchett scored the only
points for the Eagle girls, finishing seventh
in the 1600-meter run with a 6:22.30.
Burchett also competed in the 800, her
2:49.29 placing her 10th. Junior Rachel
Weis added a pair of ninth-place efforts in
the long jump and 55-meter dash, and
freshman Laura Sampson threw in the shot
put.
The Golden Eagles now await the final
individual event-by-event rankings, with
the top 24 performances in each invited to
attend the State Indoor Championships at
the SPIRE Institute at Geneva-on-the-Lake
on March 7.

novels, which include “The Edible Woman,” “The Robber Bride,”
“The Blind Assassin,” “Oryx and Crake,” and “The Year of the
Flood.”
Her non-fiction book, “Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of
Wealth,” part of the Massey Lecture series, was made into a documentary.
“The Oryx and Crake” trilogy is being adapted into an
HBO television series. Her work has been published in more than
library events
40 languages, including Farsi, Japanese, Turkish, Finnish, Korean,
In “Fantasy Island,”
a magical power source
is able to turn back the
hands of time to give its
characters the opportunity
to choose a different path. And it is
such a shame that the source is not real as
I would very much like to recover the hours
spent watching this garbage.
“Fantasy Island” is one of the dumbest
movies I have ever seen and I will not do it
a courtesy by including “in quite some time”
at the end of that statement. It is just one
of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Full
stop.
From the moment it opens with a woman
running through the jungle in high heels to
the unveiling of the deepest and darkest desires
of the main characters to it unsurprising
and nonsensical end, this film is a
tedious slog to get through. While there are
brief sputters of interesting things happening,
such as contest winner Melanie (Lucy
Hale) getting to exact revenge on what she
believes is a holographic form of a childhood
tormentor, it is just as quickly squashed by
things like dialogue and acting and pacing
issues. The latter is a big problem in this
film, especially because the story relies on
the fulfillment fantasies of five characters
and the concept of being careful with what
you wish for.
While pacing was an issue, it was not the
primary issue I had with this film. That
would be the lack of knowing what it
wanted to be and just throwing things
around to see if it would make sense. I am
not one to say that a film must choose one
genre but “Fantasy Island” tries it hand at
several and fails at them all. It tries to create
a supernatural atmosphere but it dies
with the reanimated bodies that pile up. It
reaches for the psychological thriller but is
neither psychologically compelling nor
thrilling. When it bombs at those genres, it
the reel deal
Dedra Cordle
goes for horror and is
horrible. Then it tries
to turn itself into a
campy comedy and
just sputters out like a
small fire in a torrential
rain.
The attempt at the
latter was particularly
egregious as that is a
personal favorite. It is
hard to pull off camp
but what helps is a cast that is in on the
joke, even if the overall film is not that
great. The cast in this film, which includes
Maggie Q, Michael Pena, Ryan Hansen and
Austin Stowell, do not seem to be in on any
joke, though Hansen tries when paired up
with Jimmy O. Yang. (The two play brothers
wanting to live the high life.) Instead, it
feels as if they do not know what is going on
or how they came to be involved with the
film. I suspect it had more to do with the island
location and the paycheck rather than
an affinity for the script.
With a terribly told story, shoddy pacing
and not-so-great acting, “Fantasy Island”
will not fulfill any fantasies you have about
watching a good movie, or even being entertained
by a bad one: It’s just this weird
hodge-podge of rough draft ideas with a very
low enjoyment factor. If, by some chance,
you had wanted to see this movie, do yourself
a favor and speak with your wallet and
consult with your free time beforehand; listen
to it and agree with it as they tell you to
spend it on something else, anything else.
After all, there is no magical power source
granting us the opportunity to choose a different
path.
Prepare to laugh when ‘Spamalot’ hits stage
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
“If people want to laugh—and laughter is good for us, especially
coming out of winter—they will love it.”
That’s the pitch Laura Madden gives when asked why folks
should see Southeastern High School’s production of “Spamalot,”
the musical adaptation of the 1975 British comedic film, “Monty
Python and the Holy Grail.”
Madden, an art teacher, and Kelly Sheeley, a music teacher, are
directing the show which parodies the story of King Arthur and his
Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail.
“We were very excited when we found out there was a school version
of the musical,” Madden said.
Southeastern’s 20-member cast is doing a great job with the material.
“They are doing very well with the comedy and with the songs.
The music itself isn’t hard, but there are a lot of words—lots of plays
on words and puns,” Madden said.
That and the fact that many of the actors are playing multiple
parts means the cast has been busy.
“One of the challenges that comes with that is fast scene in which the knights are collecting dead bodies
costume changes. Sometimes, they only have a song to from the plague. Not Dead Fred pipes up that he’s “not
change clothes,” Madden said. “But that’s also what dead yet,” then gets up to sing and dance, along with
makes it really fun—that they get to play so many characters.”
“All of the songs fit very well with the story. The
the other bodies.
Holding down lead roles are senior Brady Bair as lyrics—they just make me laugh!” Madden said.
King Arthur, senior Olivia Bauer as the king’s sidekick, Among the show’s many popular tunes are “Always
Patsy, and senior Megan Segrest as the Lady of the Look on the Bright Side of Life” and “The Song that
South Charleston
Heritage Commission will reprise Edwards program
Due to many requests, the South
Charleston Heritage Commission is repeating
its presentation of “Edward Edwards:
His Life and His Life’s Work.”
Edwards walked from Pennsylvania to
South Charleston as a young man in 1843.
When he died in 1897, his obituary said he
had either built or remodeled more than 90
percent of the houses standing in South
Charleston at the time. He turned the village
into a well-known town of Victorian homes.
The Heritage Commission received a
History Outreach Award from the Ohio
Local History Alliance last fall for community
involvement in the research of this
nearly forgotten chapter of South
Charleston history.
The presentation will take place at 2
p.m. March 29 in the Community Room at
Town Hall, 35 S. Chillicothe St. The room
is handicap-accessible. Admission is free for
children and students. A $10 donation is
suggested for adults.
Southeastern High School’s FFA chapter
is promoting an opportunity to get rid of old,
unused vehicles and farm equipment while
benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities
(RMHC).
Through April 24, Ohio FFA chapters
are ridding their communities of unneeded
vehicles and farm equipment. At no cost to
the owner or the local FFA chapter, RMHC
will pick up the vehicle or farm equipment
(from anywhere in Ohio) and tow it to the
nearest auction location. The program is
made possible by Telhio Credit Union.
Anyone interested
in donating a
vehicle or equipment
can do so via
phone at 800-332-
Each donation
will be tracked to
the chapter using
the chapter’s identification
number.
This spring, Telhio
Credit Union and
the Ohio FFA Foundation
will award
$10,000 to the Ohio
FFA chapter with
the most vehicles
donated.
Name change for
West Jeff company
Dunlap Hay Insurance, a staple in the
West Jefferson community since the early
1900s, officially announced its new name—
CoverLink Insurance—effective March 1.
“We have all been working towards a
name that pays tribute to our past, links to
our present and prepares us for our future,”
said Vickie Allen, who has been with the organization
for 12 years. “And we are confident
that this name does just that. It tells
the story of what we do, who we are and
what we believe.”
The name CoverLink, comprised of two
terms, cover and link, was chosen for multiple
reasons: cover because CoverLink
works to guard clients from attack, providing
protection and security, and link because
the company believes in relationships
and connection.
“While our name is changing, our values
and commitment to our clients and the West
Jefferson community will always remain
strong,” said Alissa Grim, account manager.
There have been no staffing changes and
no ownership changes as a result of the new
name. Dunlap Hay was not sold, contact information
remains the same, and the office
is still located at 98 E. Main St., West Jefferson,
where it has been for more than 25
years.
