SELWYN TIMES Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Wednesday March 4 2020 13 News Students committed to Borneo fundraiser ROLLESTON College students are doing what they can to fundraise for a trip to Borneo this year. There are 13 students and two teachers taking part in the Antipodeans Expedition and will spend three weeks on the Southeast Asian island in December. Students have been fundraising to help with a community project while on the trip. The group helped with cleaning up Hagley Park after the Electric Ave Festival to raise funds. “The learners turned up bright and early at 7am with parents, friends and siblings to help out, in total having about 25 crew members,” Rolleston College learning coach Amanda Almeida said. “Some came to lend a hand for a couple hours before rushing off to other commitments while others spent 5hr cleaning up the little niggly bits left in the grass and mud.” The group aims to raise at least $2000 for the community project in Sarawak. “It was great to get such an awesome opportunity to raise a good chunk of money towards MOTIVATED: Rolleston College students are working hard to fundraise for a community project they will partake in on a trip to Borneo later this year. our community project,” Ms Almeida said. Last month year 11 Jed Mc- Cready organised for the group to get together and garden for a neighbour to earn some money. “Eight of us took up the gardening challenge. It was hot, dusty work and we pulled a lot of weeds. It was a good feeling when we looked back at the end of the day and saw what we had achieved together,” he said. “We all worked hard and it was recognised with a $50 bonus. In total we earned $300 towards our group funds for our Borneo community project.” Busy start to year for West Melton pupils IT HAS been a busy start to the year for the pupils at West Melton School. There were 34 new pupils and eight new staff welcomed with a mihi whakatau. The school also held its annual year 5 – 8 duathlon, where pupils had a chance to compete as an individual entry or as part of a team. The top competitors now have a chance to compete at the Selwyn Central Zone duathlon being held at the Motukarara Domain at the end of this month. The new student ambassadors have been selected and are Amira, Aleia, Luke, Hamish, Brooklyn and Ryder. Promotions and sports administrator Rita Spadoni said: “These learners have been selected for representing our DRIVER values of determination/aumangea, respect/whakaute, integrity/ ngākaupono, vitality/hiringa, empathy/aroha and resilience/ manawaroa.
