The Kirwee Tavern was
destroyed in a fire that broke out
at 11.50pm on Christmas Eve last
year.

Police helicopter
helps catch
suspected burglars

THE NEW Eagle police
helicopter helped to catch three
suspected burglars found at a
property in Lincoln on Saturday.
Police received a call at 7.45pm
reporting a possible burglary at a
property on Accommodation Rd.
A member of the public had
observed three vehicles and
thought they looked suspicious.
A police spokeswoman said:
“The Eagle observed three vehicles
leaving the property and was
able to monitor the vehicles until
ground staff were on scene to
conduct vehicle stops.”
One vehicle was stopped on
Trices Rd, one on Springs Rd and
the location of where the third
was stopped is unknown.
There was no stolen property
found in any of the vehicles.
“It sounds like the alleged offenders
may have been disturbed at
the property by the arrival of Eagle,
as they appear to have left in their
vehicles as soon as they became
aware Eagle was observing them,”
the spokeswoman said.
Three men, two 22-year-olds
and a 28-year-old, have been
charged with burglary.
The 22-year-olds were scheduled
to appear in Christchurch District
Court on Monday; the 28-year-old
will appear on March 23.
The Eagle helicopter was involved
in another call-out in the
district later on Saturday night.
A vehicle failed to stop for
police in Wards Rd in Darfield at
10.15pm.
A police spokeswoman said
they initially pursued the vehicle
but abandoned a short time later
due to the manner of driving.
The helicopter was able to
observe the car as it continued
driving and stopped at a property
in Kirwee.
“Six people left the vehicle and
attempted to hide from police.
The Eagle crew was able to direct
ground staff to where the people
were hiding and all were taken
into custody,” she said.
A 25-year-old man has been
charged with failing to stop and
dangerous driving.
He is scheduled to appear in
Christchurch District Court
today.
