the forthcoming Grindtec International Trade Fair

for grinding technology.

Taking pride of place will be the all new

Voumard 1000 Universal CNC internal grinding

machine which will be fully operational and on

public view for the first time while another

Hardinge machine highlight will be an addition to

their extensive universal grinding machine

portfolio.

Both machines feature significant design

innovations coupled with ease of use, underlying

Hardinge Inc.’s focus on combining advanced

design characteristics with quality and precision

towards creating a highly productivity solution for

the end user.

The new Voumard 1000 offers a highperformance,

economical grinder for the widest

range of universal internal grinding requirements

to obtain fine surface finishes and tight tolerances.

A primary design feature is the use of hydrostatic

guideways which are standard on all axes and

produce the very highest machine performance

across all ID grinding applications. They provide

excellent damping, stick and slip-free operation

and very rigid wrap around guideways, resulting

in outstanding surface quality and more reliability

without any friction loss and wear.

TWO NEW HARDINGE GRINDING MACHINES

At GrindTec 2020, the international trade fair for

grinding technology, sharpening specialist

VOLLMER will be presenting itself for the first

time as a full-line supplier. VOLLMER is now

expanding its range of machines for rotary tool

production across the three fields of grinding,

eroding and laser machining.

Receiving its exhibition World Premiere at

GrindTec, VOLLMER will be introducing the laser

technology of the new VLaser 270. Being shown for

the first time at GrindTec in Hall 1 (Stand

1006/1027), the new arrival completes the trio. In

addition, around a dozen grinding and erosion

machines can also be seen live at VOLLMER in

Augsburg. This will include the VGrind 340S, the

VGrind 360 and VPulse 500, as well as the CHX

840, CHD 270, CHP and CHF 840 models for

circular saw machining. The trade fair appearance

of the 111-year-old machine manufacturer will be

rounded off with the company's innovative range

of services, training and IoT applications.

All good things come in threes; and the trade

fair appearance of sharpening specialist

VOLLMER at GrindTec 2020 will emphasise this

by presenting itself in Augsburg for the first time

as a full-line supplier. The three consecutive L’s of

the term "full-line supplier" symbolise the three

technologies of grinding, eroding and laser

machining with which the machine manufacturer

can completely cover the machining of rotary tools,

circular saws and band saws. The three L’s also

industries ranging from aerospace to medical with

typical applications being grinding operations on

parts for hydraulic components, spindles,

bearings, and gears.

For over 80 years, the Voumard brand has been

a global leader in innovative ID/OD grinding with

almost 10,000 installed internal grinding machines

around the world. It specializes in machine tools

specifically designed for machining work pieces

with large diameters and / or lengths. Acquired by

Hardinge in 2014, Voumard is now an integrated

part of Hardinge Inc.’s grinding group alongside

Jones & Shipman Hardinge, Kellenberger, Hauser,

Tschudin, and Usach. Voumard's production and

support facility is now back to its roots in

Switzerland, where it is within the Kellenberger

operations.

In the UK Jones & Shipman Hardinge, based in

Rugby, represents all of the Hardinge Grinding

and Super Precision® products along with the

sales and support for Okamoto grinding machines.

Commenting on the new Voumard machine

introduction, Mike Duignan, managing director of

Jones & Shipman Hardinge states; “We are

introducing a brand-new grinding system that

incorporates features resulting from customer

Other than traditional grinding machine

features, the Voumard 1000 offers up to 5 fully

functional CNC axes with outstanding positioning

accuracies in the nanometer range as well as best in

class tool and work piece management. The

concept also offers additional movement for

dressing and measuring devices.

Adds Mike Duignan; “In replacing the

Voumard 110, 130 and aspects of the 150 series, the

new 1000 machine offers almost infinite

configuration options for wide ranging grinding

operations. It can accommodate machine work

pieces with a length of 300mm length and 300mm

swing diameter over the table.”

In addition to the features highlighted, other

key elements of the Voumard 1000 are ultraprecision

accuracy with a fast oscillation, direct

drive linear motor system; coolant management; a

hydrostatic spindle turret configuration for ideal

accessibility and accommodating a larger

spectrum of parts; hydrostatic B-axis with

benchmarking positioning repeatability and a

compact “table turret” for collision-free dressing

and improved accessibility.

Finally, there is the Fanuc 31i control for

improved operator access, fast programming and

retooling, even for inexperienced operators. This

uses the latest BLUE Solution software with object

guide for easy operation and short set up times.

GrindTec that relate to eroding and grinding

technology. The VPulse 500 and QXD 250 wire

erosion and disc erosion machines will be on show,

just like the VHybrid 360 combined grinding and

erosion machine. Tool manufacturers can use the

VHybrid 360 to both grind and erode carbide and

PCD tools such as drills, milling cutters or reamers

in a single set-up. Three models from the VGrind

family will be on show in Augsburg: The VGrind

360E basic model, the VGrind 360 and the VGrind

340S with linear drive for machining extremely

small carbide tools. With two new optional

features, the VGrind 360 optimises productivity for

tool manufacturers. Due to a higher processing

speed, the material removal rate can be

significantly increased whist the simultaneous

replacement of grinding wheels and tools

significantly reduces non-productive time.

Machines for machining carbide-tipped

circular saw blades are traditionally wellrepresented

at the VOLLMER GrindTec stand. On

the global grinding technology market, the

VOLLMER machines abbreviated as CHX, CHP,

CHF and CHD are some of the industry’s bestselling

MTA PRESIDENT SAYS “UK MANUFACTURING

PROVIDERS SHOULD EMBRACE THEIR ROLE

AS ‘CHAMPIONS OF PRODUCTIVITY’

The 6th February saw the Manufacturing

Technologies Association’s (MTA) Annual

Dinner take place at the at the Royal Lancaster

Hotel, London. Always a popular event for

manufacturing technology providers, over 400

guests got together to discuss the future and

celebrate success.

MTA President and Director of Yamazaki

Mazak, Marcus Burton MBE, used his keynote

speech to address some of the hot topics

affecting the UK manufacturing sector: Brexit

and future trade, climate change, how MTA

members are ‘champions of productivity’ and

of course MACH 2020.

On productivity he said “MTA members

have the equipment, ideas and expertise for our

manufacturers to transform their productivity.

In fact, our MTA members are the ‘Champions

of Productivity’. As such we have a huge

opportunity, and responsibility, to improve the

economic well-being of the whole country.”

He continued by highlighting that MACH

2020 is just around the corner, saying “MACH is

the only place in the UK to see such technology

on display and under power – but it is more

than that – it is the spotlight for our creativity.

It’s just ten weeks away now, and I, for one,

can’t wait to see what the ‘Champions of

Productivity’ have to offer the 25,000 plus

visitors we expect to come from far and wide.”

The MTA President didn’t shirk away from

tough topics, addressing concerns on climate

change. and Brexit. Saying “The UK

government is committed to achieving net zero

greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These

changes will cause disruption but undoubtedly

will bring huge opportunities for innovative

manufacturers. We must be at the centre of this

transformation and develop new innovative

products and services using the latest digital

technologies.”

On Brexit he reiterated the Association’s

commitment to engage with government to

ensure “Sensible cooperation on regulations,

developed by listening to our industry, will

ensure our sector can continue to be

competitive in our biggest market. We need a

customs regime that is light touch, and the

ability to send people all over the continent at

short notice – we need this flexibility to support

our customers.”

MADE SMARTER

MACH 2020 is pleased to announce that the

Made Smarter programme will be exhibiting

at the UK’s national manufacturing

showcase. Their stand at the exhibition will

look to help SMEs start their digital journey.

The Made Smarter North West pilot is

already working with SMEs to help them

introduce digital tools and technologies to

boost productivity and growth.

So far 300 North Western small and

medium sized manufacturers have secured

support, including specialised advice and

£1.6M of funding, in the first year of the

programme.

The North West pilot is being overseen by

the Made Smarter Commission – a

partnership between the Department for

Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

and industry leaders.

The programme aims to kick start a new

industrial revolution for the manufacturing

sector and turn the country into a world

leader in digital technologies. These

technologies can help close the productivity

gap in the UK and cost effectively boost

production.

The Made Smarter team are looking to

implement what they have learnt in the

North West Pilot to help roll the scheme out

to other areas and regions of the UK.

Made Smarter is bringing this help and

support to MACH 2020 in order to reach

even more makers and signpost them

towards taking their first steps into Industry

4.0.

RK International Machine Tools will focus

attention on its extensive grinding machine

portfolio and the recently introduced EUROPA

eturn VS range of manual lathes at MACH 2020.

In total seven machines will be on display with

all but one under power. Grinding machines

shown come from its long-term supplying

partners Robbi, Perfect, Delta, and Jainnher;

covering all aspects of abrasive machining

through universal grinding, surface grinding,

vertical spindle rotary table grinding and

centreless grinding. Those looking for manual

turning will be able to see and discuss the

EUROPA eturn VS range represented at MACH

2020 by the mid-range VS390 gap bed lathe.

There will be two machines on show from

Robbi, these being the Robbi Omicron 600R

conventional universal grinder and the

company’s latest development, the Robbi

Omicron T7 PLC universal grinder. The

Omicron 600R is the smallest in the R-series

with a between centre distance of 600 mm (up to

1000 mm available on other machines).

Delivering high standards of precision, with

roundness of 0,8 micron and cylindricity from 2

to 6 micron, its versatility and flexibility also

make it ideal for small batch production.

The Perfect range of grinders will be

represented by the X36 high precision PLC

touch screen controlled surface grinder.

Representing the Delta range will be the

LC400 vertical spindle, rotary table surface

grinder. The LC400 can grind up to 400 mm

diameter and up to 205 mm in height. While a

manual machine as standard the LC40 can be

equipped with Delta’s L11E automation system.

Centreless grinding is represented by the

Jainnher JHC12S machine. This machine allows

through-feed and plunge grinding of

components measuring up to 40mm diameter

while holding micron level accuracies.

Completing the display is the brand new

EUROPA eturn VS390 manual lathe with a 390

mm swing over the bed (610 in the gap). The

range also features eturn Energy Management

Technology (EEMT), which helps reduce

energy consumption, particularly at times when

the machine is stood idle by putting the lathe

into sleep mode and switching off all

unnecessary power consumption.

The latest small-format WARDJet waterjet

cutting machine will be demonstrated by

AXYZ Automation Group on Stand 630 in

Hall 6 at MACH 2020. Part of the A-Series of

machines, the A-0612 shares the same

industrial design features and performance

capabilities of the larger-format series of

machines but in a more compact size. It has

been developed to accommodate the

requirements of engineering shops and

machining centres where work space is at a

premium and the need for more costeffective

production equipment are major

considerations.

A key benefit of the A-0612 is that, whilst

similarly configured waterjet machines

invariably operate at pressures ranging from

30,000 to 45,000psi, the A-0612 will operate at

60,000psi. This enables machine owners to

match the performance capabilities of much

larger waterjet machines but at a

commensurately lower cost.

In common with all of the larger-format

machines, the A-0162 is based on a heavyduty

tank construction embodying formed

quarter inch-thick steel for the side and floor

and a five-inch box channel for added

strength, reinforced with a half-inch by sixinch

steel reinforcement bar. It also

incorporates multiple cutting tool heads, an

industrial-grade rack and pinion drive

system for optimum cutting precision and

the elimination of problems frequently

encountered with conventional belt-driven

systems and an optional water level control

system and cutting table enclosure. These

combine to reduce splashback and thus

conserve water as well as reducing machine

noise and thereby further enhancing the

environmental and workplace safety

credentials of the A-0612.

On show for the first time at a MACH show

(Hall 17, stand 310) will be a heavy duty

Turbex ACV-1.7-2 aqueous cleaning machine

from the company's range of front-loading,

spray washing and rinsing machines. The

main feature of the latest-generation models,

which have options for one, two or three

process tanks, is a pump that is mounted

vertically rather than horizontally, resulting

in more powerful cleaning and much quieter

operation.

The machines are particularly popular in

the UK for degreasing, precision cleaning,

phosphating, paint removal, descaling and

de-rusting. Manufactured from stainless

steel, the ACV programme comprises both

single- and multi-stage units with options for

one, two or three process tanks. Standard

sizes range from one to three metres in

diameter, although larger versions are

available.

These PLC-controlled machines provide a

high level of cleaning performance due to

ingenious design principles combined with

elevated liquid spray pressures and flow

rates achieved by the powerful pump. The

spray system, also of stainless steel, rotates

around a fixed load that can weigh several

tonnes. Acoustic as well as thermal

insulation protect operators from undue

noise and heat.

Air blast and hot air drying stages are

optional, as is gas instead of electric heating.

Other optional accessories include steam

extraction, automatic refill, an oil skimmer or

separator and a detergent dosing unit. A

manually operated spray lance with its own

impeller pump can also be supplied,

allowing particularly awkward soils to be

removed. Alternatively, temporary use of the

equipment as a manual spray booth is

possible.

A total of 12 CNC Cincom sliding-head and

Miyano fixed-head turn-milling centres will

be demonstrated under power on the Citizen

Machinery UK stand at MACH 2020 (Hall 20-

150), including automated production cells

with integrated loading and unloading.

Accent will also be placed on high

technology software and mechanical

enhancements that extend the scope and

efficiency of machining on these Japanesebuilt

lathes.

On show for the first time will be Citizen's

flagship series-five Cincom M32-VIII and a

Miyano BNE‐65MSB, both of revised design

with more power and flexibility plus the

latest Mitsubishi M800 5-axis touch-screen

control. Consequently, the latter machine is

the first 65 mm capacity Miyano lathe to offer

superimposed machining, which allows

three tools to be in cut together under

simultaneous 5-axis control for elevated

levels of productivity.

New will be a Cincom L32‐X with

Citizen's 2-axis LFV programmable

chipbreaking software built into the

operating system of the control as well as

integrated, high-speed laser cutting

capability, a technology that was originally

developed for efficient production of

apertures in thin-wall stents on smaller

Citizen sliding-head lathes.

The exhibition will also mark the first UK

showing of the 12 mm bar capacity Cincom

L12-X LFV with five rear-facing static and

driven endworking tool positions and the

addition of a Y-axis on the counter spindle to

mirror the main spindle's three degrees of

freedom. The machine is intended primarily

for production of dental abutments and

implants as well as other complex

components.

extremely hard new drilling line is said to be

extremely resilient to potential breakages.

This bold claim is based upon the new

carbide grade developed by Guhring for the

RT100XF that performs a balancing act

between hardness and toughness. The

special structure of this Guhring created

carbide grade has a re-sharpening effect, so

breakages that normally accelerate tool wear,

no longer occur. This is supplemented by the

proven nanoFire coating system that has

been created by a specially designed pre- and

post-treatment that smooths the coating and

makes it significantly more robust.

The design and geometry of the new

RT100XF supports the robust performance of

the carbide grade and surface treatment with

an early double margin support that perfects

the coaxiality to ensure perfect bore size and

roundness. This makes the RT100XF the drill

of choice for precision, concentricity and

performance for hole making from 5xD

upwards. Furthermore, polished flutes

reduce the heat transfer to the component,

this also supports the fast evacuation of chips

and thermal changes such as hardening are

avoided. The new through coolant drills are

perfect for the drilling of structural and casehardened

steels, free-cutting and heat-treated

steels, nimonics, titanium, inconel and

hastalloy, making the RT100XF the perfect

complement for any machine shop. Available

in 5XD and 7XD, the new drills can be

purchased in diameters from 3mm to 20mm

diameter with 0.1mm increments.

Alongside the new RT100XF at MACH

will be the HT800 WP indexable insert

drilling system. Developed for extreme

process reliability, the HT800 WP range is

available in diameters from 11 to 40mm with

drilling depths of 1.5XD, 3XD, 5XD, 7XD and

the hydraulic Hydro-Pin toolholder to

shanks, many with their own location

configurations. Features common to all include

substantially reduced setting times – by as

much as 75% - and an up to 50% increase in

cutter life due to the more secure, vibration-free

grip.

In all formats, a paramount feature of the

design is the need to eliminate run out with a

guaranteed centre height at the insert tip being

essential for successful high precision

machining. There is also guaranteed

repeatability when changing like-for-like bars

and a simple, fool proof fitting process.

Being a hydraulic chuck, Hydro-Pin

removes the need for reduction sleeves when

securing the bar, guaranteeing anti-vibration

damping and reducing the opportunities for

inaccuracy and bar deflection during the boring

process.

The most common location format in

proprietary systems features a ground angle on

the back end (of the bar) locating against a stop

pin at the base of the toolholder. This ensures

precise central positioning and orientation with

the bar then locked into the hydraulic chuck.

XYZ MACHINE TOOLS UNVEILS TURNING CENTRES

Stand No: 130 Hall 18

XYZ Machine Tools will use MACH 2020 to

reveal the latest additions to its Compact

Turn turning centre range, the XYZ CT65HD

and the XYZ CT52LR. The XYZ CT65HD

replaces the existing Compact Turn CT65

and comes with enhanced turning capacity

with maximum turned length more than

double its predecessor at 535 mm, with a

total z-axis travel of 550 mm. Another

addition is the increased coolant delivery

pressure, which now runs at 30 l/min at 2.5

bar. The HD designation relates to the CT

65HD’s construction, which remains as a

solid Meehanite ribbed casting with x and y

axes positioned along hardened and ground

box slideways by means of ballscrews that

have been increased in size to 28 mm and 40

mm respectively, with 20 m/min feedrates.

The spindle remains as a 23hp/18kW with a

maximum speed of 4500 revs/min and the 12

position 30VDI turret remains as standard

along with the MT4 tailstock with 90 mm of

travel.

The arrival of the XYZ CT52LR mirrors

the development of XYZ Machine Tools’

machining centre range, with the

introduction of linear rail technology to its

turning centres for the first time. Providing a

300 mm maximum turned length and 52 mm

bar capacity the XYZ CT52LR provides users

with the perfect entry into turning centre

ownership and when combined with a

machining centre from XYZ’s LR range

delivers a highly price competitive package

for any subcontractor that is unsure of what

work will come in from week-to-week.

Other key specifications of the CT52LR

include its 15 hp/11.2 kW spindle capable of

running at 4500 revs/min, 300 mm

maximum swing, 180 mm maximum turned

diameter and axis travels in x and z of 165

and 315 mm respectively with a 10 position

block-type turret providing plenty of

machining options. “The arrival of the

CT52LR is down to the success of the LR

series of machining centres, which have been

extremely well received by customers and

have opened up new opportunities thanks to

the cost advantage while retaining excellent

METALCUTTING TECHNOLOGY FOR A

NEW DECADE Stand No: 110 Hall 6

Hurco's location at MACH 2020 will be the

same as two years ago, stand 110 in hall 6, but

will be even larger at nearly 300 square metres.

The exhibition will mark the launch of two

product ranges.

There will be an integrated robot loading

solution from Hurco’s new automation

division, ProCobots. Four standard products of

different sizes constitute the range, all equally

well suited to feeding machining centres or

lathes.

To be shown for the first time ever will be

the company's new range of lathes with driven

tooling, which will be represented by the

TM8Mi model.

Hurco is increasingly seen as a major 5-axis

machining centre supplier, with customers

replacing 3- and 4-axis machines with these

higher-end products. Some not only have extra

CNC axes but also enhanced specification in

terms of higher feed rates and spindle speed,

plus linear scales rather than rotary encoders in

X, Y and Z and torque motors rather than

standard drives in the rotary B and C axes.

The company will be showing examples of

all 5-axis machining centre configurations in its

portfolio. The flagship VMX42SRTi, with

torque motor-driven B-axis swivel head and C-

axis rotary table, flush with the fixed horizontal

table, offers the most flexible production

possibilities within a relatively compact

footprint.

The more traditional cantilever table design

of the VC500i is ideal for one-offs and more

complex applications, while the VMX30Ui is a

more economical solution incorporating a

swivelling trunnion with 250 mm diameter

rotary table.

The range will be completed by the addition

of a Kitagawa TT150 table to a 3-axis Hurco

VM20i. The combination gives full

simultaneous 5-axis capability plus the option

to remove the compound table for machining

of larger components or multiple parts using

the machine's three CNC axes.

Hurco will demonstrate the latest software

developments for its WinMAX machining

centre controls, including the 3D DXF and solid

model import functions that allow 5-sided

parts to be programmed conversationally,

directly from a STEP or IGES file, by

automatically inserting transform plane

commands.

Advanced Grinding Solutions (AGS) has booked one of its largest ever stands, stand 17-320, at the

forthcoming Mach show where it will be exhibiting no less than 6 machines and additional associated

Tschudin has chosen to exhibit its new Cube machine at Mach–

a brand new and unique design of CNC Centerless Grinding

machine that receives its UK debut and, like

other machines within the Tschudin range,

benefits from a granite bed and a unique axis

arrangement that sees the workrest blade being

mounted onto its own CNC axis. This allows

components to be loaded to the centerless

grinding machine outside of the working range

of the machine. The Cube is targeted at those

companies needing to quickly and easily

centerless grind parts from 0.1mm to 20mm in

diameter where operator’s safety and easy and

secure hand loading is also a consideration as are

the very fastest set-up times.

Also receiving its UK debut is a Comat superfiltration

system that delivers 2-3μm filtration

quality throughout the entire working cycle thus

maximising the quality of parts produced on

VOLLMER TO CUT SAW BLADE PRODUCTION TIMES

At MACH 2020, VOLLMER will be

demonstrating its circular saw blade

production expertise in Hall 20 on Stand 550

with the Vollmer CHX840/HS CNC grinding

machine and the Loroch Evolution K850-M.

The two machines will appear alongside the

Vollmer Vgrind 360 tool grinding machine at

the UK’s showpiece manufacturing event.

The impressive CHX840/HS automated

CNC machine is capable of sharpening the

tooth face and top of circular saw blades in a

single set-up with continuous unmanned

running. Vollmer has developed this

machine in line with the requirements of

sharpening specialists and manufacturers

that continuously re-sharpen circular saws.

The impressive CHX840/HS is ideal for

machining carbide-tipped circular saw

blades with a diameter up to 840mm; and for

manufacturers producing larger saw blades,

Vollmer has another variant, the CHX1300

available for saw blades up to 1300mm

diameter.

With five CNC-controlled axes, the

CHX840/HS can machine saw blades with

all common tooth geometries and this also

applies to axial angle and group toothing.

The CHX840 machine at MACH will be

connected to Vollmer’s impressive HS

automation solution, hence the CHX840/HS

designation. The HS system ensures

automatic loading of the CHX840 machine,

so end users can benefit from more than

seven hours of unmanned operation. The

programming and preparation of the saw

blade stack can be undertaken during

machine operation and with a saw blade

stack height of up to 180mm, the HS

automatic machine loading system can hold

up to 25 circular saw blades. As saws are

stacked with intermediate layers, tooth

breakages and blade damage can be avoided.

The CHX840/HS can accommodate saw

blades with a bore diameter up to 80mm and

is generally specified for saw blades with an

outer diameter from 140 to 530mm. The

CHX840/HS is equipped with different

automation options to reduce machining and

set-up times and the CHX840/HS at MACH

will certainly draw the crowds. This includes

an optional automatic set-up process that

consists of running-in the saw, diameter

detection and also an acoustic sensor for

touching.

Credit to a double grinding wheel

configuration, the sharpening of tooth face

and top is conducted in a single set-up, thus

reducing the set-up times of the machine. A

transverse feed pawl with pneumatic lifting

also permits machining of clamping

segments and clamping rings.

The operating concept of the CHX840/HS

is based on the VOLLMER multi-function

hand-wheel that facilitates the selection and

movement of the axes, which in turn avoids

operating errors. The machining times and

surface quality can be improved with

variable input of the grinding speeds during

the sharpening process at the different areas.

NEW SOFTWARE

software into its TNC control systems,

widely fitted by machine tool OEMs to their

machining centres and mill-turn centres, that

allows complex trochoidal milling routines to

be programmed conversationally on the shop

floor, without having to download the cycles

from a CADCAM station. The OCM

(optimised contour milling) functionality,

which is a new option available for the

PSL DATATRACK AND ANR: TWO DECADES IN PARTNERSHIP

ANR Manufacturing is a specialist

subcontractor for both the electronics and

engineering industries. The company has

now relied on PSL Datatrack production

control software for almost 20 years to ensure

careful monitoring and control of every

project. Benefitting from the modular

structure of PSL Datatrack, ANR has been

able to gradually invest in the software over

the years as part of their continuous

improvement policy and now run a much

larger system than was purchased at the

outset.

With ISO 9001:2015 accreditation, ANR

provides its subcontract services to a wide

range of OEM and blue-chip customers,

many of whom have been clients for a vast

number of years. The challenge has been to

provide a continuous level of high product

quality, traceability, on-time deliveries and

service to all customers from sectors such as

broadcasting, automotive, security, medical,

semiconductor, sport and entertainment

industries.

The company operates out of a split-level

factory in Bourne End. On the ground floor, a

modern machine shop equipped with high

precision CNC multi-axis machines offers

precision milling and turning capabilities. On

the second floor, the electronics division

offers PCB assemblies, cable assemblies and

full turnkey box builds.

ANR’s initial investment in PSL Datatrack

was a result of the recognition that it needed

to address the administration associated with

the purchase of materials and components

needed for the manufacture of its vast range

of assembly types. The company appreciated

that PSL Datatrack’s controls were logical

and strategic to their business requirements.

Ease of interface and control of quotes, times

and schedules, as well as development into

status boards and charts, has since given

ANR the flexibility to understand in real time

all business demands.

With over 27,000 material stock records,

PSL Datatrack controls demand, purchasing

and allocation to invoice. Information

covering Bills of Materials (BOMs) and the

generation of Quotations, Works Orders,

Purchase Orders, Goods Received Notes

(GRNs), Inspection Reports, Bar Code

Identification, Delivery Notes and Invoices

are all managed. Important revision controls

are maintained and routed through PSL

Datatrack, ensuring all correct information is

available to authorised users.

The BOM module is key to ANR. They

take the data the customer provides them

with (the materials they require) and convert

it into PSL Datatrack part numbers, meaning

if a customer wants to change a quantity, or

even the specification of a part, ANR have

complete control. It also gives the company

the ability to check if parts are used on any

other customer equipment and ANR can

then proactively advise them that there are

changes. This allows them to create BOMs

with which to quote customers and if

successful, these transfer to purchasing.

Purchasing is a crucial element at ANR.

PSL Datatrack allows them to run reports

and status boards for any parts they need, be

it for a minimum stock level requirement or

for a specific project at any given time.

Pricing is also crucial, as discrepancies could

lead to big losses on jobs. Purchasers need to

ensure that the price of materials on purchase

orders match prices on quotes. “We wouldn’t

be able to run without PSL Datatrack,” says

Dan Avery, Materials Controller.

Without PSL Datatrack, managing the

production of printed circuit boards (PCBs)

would be a logistical nightmare but the job

cards produced from quotations are a great

help. These detail the process and all of the

materials that go into the assemblies. PSL

Datatrack ensures the quote is right, meaning

data can be reused/copied throughout the

rest of the process and minimise the

company’s administration times. “With our

wide range of requirements, from simple

single-material components with in-depth

processes through to 1000-line bills of

materials, PSL Datatrack controls everything

from enquiry through to invoice,” comments

Nick Wilson, ANR’s Managing Director.

Measurement of Key Performance

Indicators (KPIs) provides real time

information, improving performance and

ensuring both product quality and on time

delivery. This data is visibly demonstrated

on dynamic status boards around the factory,

allowing shop floor staff to successfully

complete works order operations in and on

time.

ANR also have changing key business

information displayed on status boards in the

management office, so data is always at the

fingertips of the company’s Directors. At a

glance it is clear to see what the order book is,

what the next few months are looking like

and also Customer Relationship

Management (CRM) tasks that staff members

are currently working on. PSL Datatrack and

ANR work closely to develop these tailored

solutions. “PSL Datatrack offers us fantastic

control, live and real time information whilst

supported by financial and profitability

reporting for our needs,” continues Nick.

ANR’s continued investment in PSL

Datatrack includes more status boards and

bespoke reports whilst continually working

on efficiency gains in data entry and

processing. This includes a status board at a

Shop Floor Data Collection (SFDC) point,

with colouring (bespoke to ANR) indicating

different statuses, such as time spent, time

remaining and non-productive time. This is

SigmaTEK Systems, a leader in developing

CAD/CAM software solutions for the

fabrication industry is pleased to announce the

latest release of the flagship SigmaNEST

product portfolio. Version 20 is a substantial

release introducing many new features in all

areas of the product with continued emphasis

on user-experience, optimizing material

utilization, and data management.

A new SigmaTEK Launcher provides a

common, customizable desktop platform from

which users can easily access core SigmaTEK

products, and eco-system applications such as

license manager, database utilities, and help

resources. The Launcher also displays a live

social media feed to ensure users are fully upto-date

with the latest product information,

trade shows, and educational webinar

schedules.

SigmaNEST enhancements includes support

for part priority nesting, nesting of filler parts,

and nesting of “mini-sheets” or mini-nests. User

efficiency continues to be a focus and a new

CAD Import Plus module is available that does

not require a local CAD installation to import a

variety of file formats, including

SOLIDWORKS, Solid Edge, Creo, Inventor, and

NX. In addition, SigmaNEST 20 adds feature

recognition (drilling, partial-depth pockets,

bevel) for STEP files.

Significant profiling enhancements see the

introduction of innovative bevel capabilities

such as advanced toolpath generation, and rulebased

corner transitioning. Users now can

import part files with complex bevels and apply

NC directly to the 3D model in an interactive 3D

viewer to ensure a safe and accurate toolpath

generation and better program verification.

Other SigmaNEST developments include

expanded support for the TRUMPF TruMatic

1000 Fiber punch laser machine, laser

precutting for creating complex threaded holes

on combination machines, and the use of raw

sheet edges as the part edge with greatly

improved height detection and probe cycles

near the sheet edge.

The challenge of delivering an accurate

quote is fundamental to the success of a project.

Version 20 delivers SigmaQUOTE, a new

integrated job quoting tool that replaces

SigmaNEST’s previous Jobs module. It is

powered by SigmaMRP, so it leverages the

product’s robust quoting functionality, allowing

users to manage companies and contacts,

generate quotes for new projects, and turn

quotes into work orders for production within

SigmaNEST.

Further improvements to the SigmaTEK 3D

suite of applications for tube, bar stock, 3D

models, and sheet metal forming include the

ability to convert multi-piece common line

gores into a single no-kerf, common line part

within SigmaDEVELOP, a 3D system for

standard ducting and HVAC geometry.

SigmaUNFOLD flattens the 3D patterns and

allows them to be manipulated for cutting and

bending operations. An automatic slit-creation

option adds a slit to an otherwise solid part so it

can be unfolded into a flat pattern that can be

processed on either cutting or press brake

machines.

For SigmaBEND, version 20 includes a

unique new radial menu with dynamic

shortcuts for editing the tool stations,

backgauges, and the part itself, as well as

improved sequencing and backgauge options.

In addition, a new manual station-generation

tool allows for easy manual tooling setup.

SigmaTUBE generates nests and NC code for

tube and pipe cutting on laser and plasma

machines, and Version 20 includes support for

new inventory profiles, and tab and notch

enhancements.

SigmaTEK also develop applications that

drive the continuous workflow of data

throughout the shopfloor. Version 20 delivers

updates to Color Offload, a tool that uses colorcoding

to track parts by next operation, with the

ability to filter by program status as well as

document management capability. SimTrans is

a transaction manager which links SigmaNEST

with other business systems. Users can leverage

SimTrans automation to create or load parts,

manipulate orders, or update inventory in real

time. Version 20 adds new transactions for

managing jobs and provides the ability to

receive email notifications for regular status

updates or invalid parts.

The exciting new EWA from ITC, can be

LUBRICATION-FREE ALTERNATIVES

Heavy dirt accumulation, dust and swarf are

commonplace for pillow blocks and fixed

flange bearings. Constant lubrication and

maintenance are therefore necessary – this

does not always have to be the case. igus has

developed lubrication-free alternatives using

spherical components made of the highperformance

plastic iglidur J, which can be

fitted in a fabricated housing.

The use of polymers prevents dirt and

dust from settling in pillow blocks and fixed

flange bearings. The igubal spherical inserts

are also suitable in agriculture and farming, in

the food industry or in plant and general

engineering applications. They can easily

replace ball bearings in existing classic

metallic pillow blocks and flange bearing

housings. They are also available as an

assembled bearing from stock mounted in a

sheet metal housing.

The iglidur J material has a low coefficient

of friction in dry operation - service life can be

easily calculated online. As it absorbs only a

little moisture, these plastic balls are suitable

for outdoors applications. Due to the

material’s chemical resistance, igubal

components are also suitable for use in

chemically demanding applications, such as

agricultural equipment or even in glass

processing.

All are available in three sizes for low-cost

sheet metal housings (Ø 20mm, 25mm and 30

mm) as well as for cast housings (UC204-210).

MEASURING ARMS

LK Metrology, which has been

manufacturing static co-ordinate measuring

machines (CMMs) in the UK since 1963, has

for the first time diversified into the supply

of 3D articulating arm metrology systems,

otherwise known as portable arms, with the

launch of a range of 24 machines called

FREEDOM arm.

There is a 6-axis model for touch probing

and a 7-axis version for multi-sensor

metrology including laser scanning. Both are

available in two accuracy levels and the four

products come in six sizes with a reach of up

to five metres. International sales and

support is through the company's offices in

the UK, North America, Belgium, France,

Germany, Italy and China as well as via a

worldwide distributor network.

Marketing manager Dave Robinson, who

is based at the firm's CMM factory near

Derby, England, commented, "The solutions

NEW TURN-MILL CENTRES FOR

MORE POWERFUL MACHINING

The common platform launched in 2018 for the

manufacture of two universal turning

machines, the B400 from Index and the TNA400

from its subsidiary Traub, has been expanded

with the addition of the B500 and TNA500 with

larger, more powerful spindles. The machines

are available in the UK, Ireland and Middle East

through sole sales and service agent Kingsbury

The four machines have much in common,

as the mineral cast bed, slideways and covers

are identical. One difference is the control, the

Index B400 and B500 being fitted with a

Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl and the TNA400

and TNA500 with Traub's Mitsubishi-based

TX8i-s V8 control. Another distinction is that

the main and counter spindles on the new 500

series lathes are A11/A8, one size up from the

A8/A6 spindle on the 400 series and delivering

40 per cent more power and torque.

To support long workpieces, TNA lathes

offer the possibility of using a tailstock

mounted on generously dimensioned roller

guideways. As an option, the machines are

available instead with a counter spindle for

complete machining of parts on the reverse end

after part-off and synchronous pick-up.

In the counter spindle versions, all machines

are equipped with an Index radial turret. New

is the option of selecting VDI40 holders instead

of VDI30, enabling a slightly larger turning

diameter and providing the live tools with

higher torque. The twelve tool stations are

equipped with the patented W-serration whose

profile ensures that the holders can be aligned

quickly and accurately.

Alternatively, a turret with axially driven

VDI40 tools can be specified on the TNA

400/500, which is advantageous when using

large, solid drills or boring bars as the forces are

transmitted directly into the turret.

Options are available for economical

machining of larger batch sizes, such as a

package for adding a barfeed consisting of a

hollow clamping cylinder, a remnant removal

unit and a workpiece handling system with

conveyor.

From 2020, all four machines will be

prepared for use with the iXcenter robot cell

equipped with an iXpanel whose operating

system is Industry 4.0-ready. The system

includes a space-saving, vertical storage unit for

up to 22 pallets to facilitate automated

production. A robot loads the pallet store with

raw material and can remove pallets with

finished components at any time without

interrupting machine operation.

front end for its modular M4258 porcupine

milling cutter for shoulder and face milling to

Tungaloy is expanding its TungForce-Feed line

of indexable small-diameter high feed milling

cutters to include R2 inserts that feature a

corner radii of 2mm. Available in diameters of

When designing a CAM program for high

There is no doubt about the biggest trend to

impact the industrial robotics sector in the

past few years. The advent of collaborative

robot (‘cobot’) technology has opened up a

host of new opportunities for manufacturers

looking to automate machines or production

lines in close proximity to human workers.

Among the latest to take advantage is

Cambridge Precision, based in St Neots,

which has invested in its first Doosan cobot

from Mills CNC to enhance a flexible,

autonomous and high-productivity milling

cell. The Doosan M0617 cobot, equipped with

ONRobot electrically-driven, two-finger

parallel grippers and Schunk vices, has been

integrated with an existing Doosan DNM

6700 vertical machining centre.

Cambridge Precision’s cobot loads

workpiece billets from a table into the DNM

6700 and, after machining operations,

unloads the finished machined components

and positions them back on the table. The

automated milling cell is able to operate

24/7.

Since installation, the cell has been

digitally programmed to handle more than

20 different projects, and the company

estimates that, from a standing start two

months ago, over 5000 prismatic parts have

been manufactured.

Says Andrew Barnard, milling supervisor:

“We were looking to achieve an 18-month

payback on the cobot investment, and

believed we could do this by moving the

Doosan DNM 6700 out of our milling unit

into a new automation area where it would

be integrated with the cobot. As long as we

could supply the cell with components in the

right size and weight range, and in sufficient

batch quantities [200 to 300], we were

confident that we could make it work, and so

it has proved.”

In another interesting application, Ford

Dagenham’s engine manufacturing plant has

invested in seven Universal Robot UR10

cobots – supplied by RARUK Automation –

to automate the previously manual task of

applying fasteners to engine blocks. The

fasteners are now applied automatically to

engines that arrive on the production line

every 30 seconds, across a 24-hour, threeshift

operation.

Until recently, the task of securing

exhaust manifolds to engine blocks using M8

studs and nuts, as well as different types of

barrel nut, was performed by an employee

operating an electric screwdriver. However,

to help improve cost efficiency and reduce

RSI, the plant identified the process as a

suitable candidate for automation. As up to

six studs and nuts require application on

each engine block, the potential savings are

notable.

In terms of the process, a vibratory bowl

feeder is deployed to offer up individual

fasteners, which are blown through a tube

using compressed air to an escapement.

From here, a dedicated screwdriver bolted to

the flange of the Universal Robots picks up

the fastener and runs it down the thread in

the engine block to secure the exhaust

manifold in position.

Aside from the savings achieved by

replacing or redeploying manual labour,

cobots also eliminate the need for breaks, as

well as potential lost time through sickness

or absenteeism. In addition, any possibility of

operator fatigue or RSI is negated, while

process repeatability is improved as there is

no longer any chance of operator error.

For these reasons, many developers of

robotic technologies are bringing new or

additional cobots to the market. A case in

point is FANUC, which recently launched its

first-ever lightweight cobot, the CRX-10iA.

Unlike FANUC’s current CR series, the

CRX-10iA is significantly lighter, weighing

just 39 kg. As such, it can be easily installed

across a broad range of applications, such as

driverless transport systems and automated

guided vehicles.

Among the innovations said to be unique

to the CRX-10iA is the ability to replace the

teach pendant with a tablet computer, which

increases ease-of-use thanks to a new user

interface. Intuitive operation will not only be

of use to new users, such as the growing

number of SMEs looking to scale up their

automation, but can also cut set-up times for

more experienced users, like those in the

automotive industry.

A new entrant to the market, Toshiba

Machine has launched two cobots which are

available from distributor TM Robotics. The

cobots, encompassing a humanoid and

SCARA version, come with newly developed

robotic vision systems.

Toshiba Machine’s humanoid cobot offers

a 6 kg maximum payload for each arm, or 10

kg when used in combination, and has been

developed to meet demand for humanmachine

collaboration in parts assembly and

inspection processes. The SCARA model,

which is also collaborative, again features

two arms, making it suitable for fast-paced

handling applications.

Further companies to declare their hand

in the cobot arena include Mitsubishi

Electric, which can now offer its Melfa

Assista series. These cobots are designed to

provide safety and durability, combined

with ease-of-use and programming.

Mitsubishi Electric’s RV-5AS-D-S99 Melfa

Assista cobot is aimed at production

line applications: from machine loading,

device assembly, kitting and un-kitting of

parts, to testing and inspection. Notably, the

range is said to offer positioning accuracies

as low as ±0.02 mm, which is comparable

with other industrial robots produced by the

company.

Recent introductions to the HNK portfolio

include the TM12 and TM14 from company

principal Techman. With an achievable reach

of 1300 mm and 12 kg payload for the TM12,

and 1100 mm reach and 14 kg payload for the

TM14, the cobots are suitable for a variety of

industries, including automotive, aerospace,

packaging and plastics. Both the TM12 and

TM14 deliver improved vision identification

functionality that is completely integrated

within the cobot platform.

Increasing numbers of machine-tool

suppliers are also looking to capitalise on the

demand for cobots, among the latest being

Hurco, which has acquired US-based

ProCobot. Visitors to the recent open house

at the company’s High Wycombe facility

could see a ProCobot automatically feeding a

Hurco VMX30UHSi five-axis machining

centre with aluminium billets from a table,

and returning finished components.

Hurco is now developing plug-and-play

solutions built around ProCobot systems

that it hopes will offer seamless integration

with an application being tested in the

proprietary WinMAX control. The company

plans to have market-ready ProCobot

options available in time for MACH 2020

next month.

CNC ROBOT DRIVEN BY ALPHACAM CUTS HIGH

TEMPERATURE FURNACE INSULATION BOARDS

A company manufacturing industrial

furnaces and ovens has switched from a

flatbed router to a robotic cell designed and

developed by CNC Robotics Ltd which uses a

KUKA robot arm programmed with

ALPHACAM, to cut its vital insulation

material. Cutting speeds are now up to eight

times faster.

Carbolite Gero uses Kerform Insulation

Board to keep the temperature of its Steel,

Zintec, and Inconel outer cases down to

around 60 degrees, while the internal

temperature peaks at 1,200 degrees. The ovens

and furnaces are used in testing facilities

across a range of industrial sectors such as

aerospace, laboratories and universities, to see

how products and liquids react in a heated

environment.

The company were already using

ALPHACAM to drive their 3-axis Biesse

router, but Plant Manager Nigel Holmes-

Taylor says the Kerform board produces a

highly abrasive dust when cut, which caused

considerable wear on exposed parts of the

CNC machine. “We came across robotic arms

with a routing attachment, and decided that

was the route to take.” They approached CNC

Robotics, the UK’s leading robotics

integration company, who specialise in

machining with robots, for their help.

An important issue for Carbolite, though,

was that they wanted to keep their

ALPHACAM programs and integrate this

into the robotic cell. No problem, says Nick

Parry, Systems Engineer and Technical Lead,

with CNC Robotics, who led the development

of the single enclosed robotic cell.

When machining with robots, as

CNC Robotics founder and owner

Jason Barker explains: “We need to

simulate the robot correctly, which

gives raw data of where the robot

goes, does it crash, and is the

toolpath correct?

“Simulation is vital for checking

correct posture, singularity, wrist

and elbow, and axis limits. The

importance of ‘what you see is what

you get’ is critical. If it crashes on

screen it’ll crash in the real world.

Using software such as

ALPHACAM means you can correct

all that before we go anywhere near

the robot itself.

“And being able to convert the existing

ALPHACAM programs that powered the

router meant there was no downtime

learning a new software. Carbolite were able

to take their existing programs and redevelop

them into the robotics world.”

Sales Manager, explains how they overcame

the simulation issue. “Toolpaths created in

ALPHACAM are passed directly to a

RoboDK interface within the software, which

simulates the robot kinematics. RoboDK is a

specially configured Software Development

Kit (SDK) which outputs the co-ordinate

cutting data to drive the robot. It means we

can see exactly what the robot’s going to do

before it processes the parts.”

And Nigel Holmes-Taylor says because

Carbolite’s new robotic cell can move at up to

two metres a second, it provides a

significant improvement over their

previous manufacturing process.

“Cutting speeds are far quicker on the

robot than on the flatbed router. While

the router was restricted to working in 3-

axis, the robot arm effectively has 6-axis,

but can actually be infinite in the way it

operates.” His team takes the

part files from drawings

produced by the engineering

facility, and imports them into

ALPHACAM. “This brings all

the cutting paths together, and

sends the program to the post

processor, which is then fed

into the RoboDK module for

simulating the movement of the

robotic arm.”

As the Kerform board comes

in a variety of thicknesses and

temperature grades, the robotic

cell designed by CNC Robotics

provides an additional benefit

versus a flatbed machine.

“Thanks to a special rotating

table, we’ve now got four positions on both

sides of the bed, which means we can cut

several different types of board needed to

produce a full unit, at the same time,” he says.

"With the flat bed we could only deal with

one type of board at a time, so this gives us a

four-to-one ratio of cutting it quicker. In some

circumstances it’s up to eight times faster.

“The rotating table that works this has a

set angle at which the cutter hits the board,

and ALPHACAM ensures the robot keeps to

that exact angle at all times, cutting in a

straight line and at the correct depth.”

And as the board has a high aluminium

content, another improvement is that all the

abrasive dust created during the cutting

process is contained within the cell and

drawn out through Carbolite’s extraction

system, meaning the overall environment is

much cleaner.

Finally, an added bonus – as ALPHACAM

can produce a full description of what needs

to be loaded on to each specific site on the

loading bay, this allowed CNC Robotics to

develop a piece of software to display the

PDF generated by ALPHACAM. “This means

CARLSBERG FREDERICIA ACHIEVES ZERO ACCIDENTS

WITH COLLABORATIVE ROBOTS

Universal Robots (UR), one of the most

trusted and widely-deployed collaborative

robot (cobot) manufacturers in the world,

today announced that the Denmark division

of Carlsberg, one of the leading brewery

groups in the world, has significantly

improved staff safety and taken steps

towards achieving zero accidents since

integrating cobots into its Fredericia-based

factory.

such as quality control and line maintenance

According to Thomas Kern Ruby, Senior

Project Manager at Carlsberg Fredericia,

previous to installing the cobots, incidents

were a common occurrence on the factory

floor. He explains: “Although our production

line was highly automated, it still required

some degree of human input. This was

mainly during the packaging process which

saw our workforce manually carrying

packaging cartons from the pallet to the

magazine. This was a monotonous and

strenuous task and often staff endured

repetitive strain or sustained severe cuts

while removing the packaging cable.”

To overcome these safety concerns, the

company invested in two cobots, the spacefriendly

UR3 and the powerful UR10. With a

high payload of up to 10kg, the company

uses the UR10 to pick up a stack of 10 cartons

which are tied together with packaging cable.

The UR3 is used to cut and dispose of the

cable and the UR10 then places the stack in

the magazine. Working in tandem, the cobots

can handle up to 500 packaging cartons per

hour, allowing Carlsberg Fredericia to

alleviate and upskill its human workforce to

Ruby explains: “This process previously

accounted for 60 percent of one employee’s

workload. Today, this stage only requires

one operator to drive a pallet of cardboard

boxes onto the line and oversee the process.

The UR10 and UR3 quite literally does all the

rest. This frees up our team to focus of more

demanding tasks that improves their job

satisfaction and crucially, keeps them safe.

achieve a zero accidents culture, a key part of

our sustainability programme, Together

Towards Zero.”

Following the success of the UR10 and

UR3, the company purchased four additional

cobots to further automate its production

lines, including handling lids during the

bottling process. According to Ruby, this has

already delivered substantial production

efficiencies.

WIRESENSE: THE WIRE ELECTRODE

THAT DOUBLES AS A SENSOR

WireSense is the assistance system from

Fronius which makes robotic welding more

efficient. The wire electrode is turned into a

sensor that checks the component position

before each weld. Manufacturing

inaccuracies can be compensated for and

perfect welding results achieved by reliably

detecting actual sheet edge heights and

positions. Rework and component rejects are

largely eliminated, while additional optical

measuring devices become unnecessary,

resulting in significant time and cost savings.

Component deviations such as varying air

gaps or clamping tolerances can cause

welding problems. In the worst case scenario,

these deviations result in a change in the

welding position and cause a lack of fusion in

the weld seam. For this reason, many

manufacturing companies use optical

measuring devices for robotic welding. Not

only are they expensive but they also

significantly restrict component accessibility,

need regular cleaning and require additional

calibration between the Tool Centre Point

(TCP) and the sensor. WireSense from

Fronius offers an easier, more robust and

precise alternative.

WireSense technology does not require

any additional sensor hardware components

– instead the wire electrode is used as a

sensor. The welding torch scans the

component with a reversing wire movement

and the welding system sends the height

information and the edge position to the

robot. For example, if a lap joint is being

welded, the edge position can be precisely

defined, and the system can react to any

deviations. The robot adjusts the weld seam

process based on an application-specific

program.

By evaluating the height information, the

robot can determine both the course of the

edge and the actual edge height. It is also

possible to determine the exact air gap

between the sheets. Edges are detected from

a height of 0.5 millimetres. WireSense can be

used with steel, stainless steel, aluminium,

and other alloys. It is with aluminium that

WireSense truly comes into its own, as

reflective surfaces are frequently a major

obstacle for optical measuring devices.

Furthermore, optical sensors are usually

installed on the robot as additional hardware

where they become disruptive contours the

robot arm. Depending on component

accessibility, this makes the use of cameras or

lasers problematic. The wire sensor does not

impose any such restrictions.

WireSense delivers height information,

which allows component contours and air

gaps to be measured. During commissioning,

welding parameters for different air gap

sizes can be defined and saved. The

WireSense assistance system therefore

enables the robot to determine the actual

component conditions in order to call up the

suitable welding parameters. In anticipation

of possible air gaps and other deviations that

could lead to lack of fusion, without the use

of sensors the welder often has to work at a

reduced speed, in order to ensure a high

weld seam quality. Thanks to the precise

detection of such anomalies in advance, the

robot can now join materials fully

automatically at the optimal speed, which

contributes to additional cycle time

optimization.

In this way, the new WireSense

technology ensures that welding is always

performed at the exact weld seam position

with optimized parameters. Final visual

inspections, rework and component rejects

can be significantly reduced resulting in time

savings and serious cost reductions.

WireSense can be used with any TPS/i

welding system from Fronius that is

configured for the use of the CMT welding

process. The precise wire movement of the

Robacta Drive CMT wire feeder, which sits

directly on the torch body, is crucially

important. Retrofitting of existing welding

systems is possible at any time due to their

flexibility.

AUTOMATION – NO NEED TO RIP AND REPLACE

The concept of full automation could be daunting, but full automation isn’t necessarily an appropriate strategy;

there is no need to revolutionise the entire facility to achieve significant productivity and efficiency improvements.

Technology is transforming every aspect of

manufacturing and logistics. But while the

pull a tug around the warehouse when an

AMR is fully capable and safe to perform that

role? Why endure the daily congestion

created at shift change or break when all

forklift trucks are returned to the same

charging area, when AGVs can be deployed

and charged far more flexibly, enabling route

optimisation and avoiding congestion?

Process Review

Successfully adding automation to an

existing environment requires organisations

to undertake two key steps. Firstly, identify

the right processes to automate. Secondly, be

realistic and pragmatic about the affordable

and achievable degree of change. By

undertaking a process

review and assessment, a

company can better

understand where

automation can be simply

and effectively deployed not

only to gain productivity

improvements but also

release staff to take on other

tasks.

Furthermore by truly

understanding the business

objective of an initial

investment in automation,

companies can better

determine the best approach

to realising that goal. For

example, adding both AGVs

and mobile conveyors may

deliver significant efficiency gains – but there

is no need to

introduce both

technologies at

once. These are

time. Plus, of course, these technologies

provide a raft of real time data that provides

invaluable insight to support on-going

approach is that it provides a gradual

evolution for the workforce, enabling an

organisation to manage expectations and

build up new skillsets to ensure staff remain

both motivated and valuable. They get a

chance to become familiar with each stage of

the automated process and enjoy the benefits

– such as the reduction in heavy lifting.

Call it Industry 4.0, automation or robotics –

intelligent technologies will have a

fundamental impact on the way

operate. But change does not have to be

wholesale. Taking a tactical approach to

to the Exaton brand name for all welding

filler metals involved with its 2018

acquisition of Sandvik Welding

Consumables. Globally, all products now

carry the Exaton name. For the EU, Middle

East and Asia-Pacific regions, the new

naming conventions are as follows:

• For stainless products, the Sandvik name

has been replaced with the Exaton followed

by the EN-ISO classification of the product.

• The nickel-based consumables previously

sold under the Sanicro name have been

renamed with “Exaton Ni” in front of the

current Sanicro number. For example,

Sandvik Sanicro 72HP is now Exaton

Ni72HP.

“We believe that keeping the alloying

number structure will minimise the change

for customers and distributors, as will

keeping all article numbers the same,” says

Henrik Calander, General Manager Specialty

Alloys, ESAB. Users can find a complete list

of Exaton product names online.

Calander emphasizes that this change is

solely related to the Exaton brand transition and

only affects product names on labels, packaging

and Material Safety Data Sheets.

“The parameters and performance of Exaton

consumables remains the same, so there is no

need to requalify weld procedures or

specifications,” he says.

The Exaton portfolio includes

solid welding wire and rods, flux

cored wire, MMA electrodes, strip

electrodes, flux and weld finishing

chemical products. Exaton works

directly with fabricators and end

users in the world’s most

demanding segments, such as oil

and gas, chemical processing,

nuclear power generation and cryogenic

applications.

Previously completed brand transition

activities included the updated brand look,

moving the Exaton mobile app (which includes

useful interactive calculators) and moving

Material Safety Data Sheets to the ESAB

website.
