Centered on Growth. Our investment in people

and technology allowed record-breaking

growth in 2019

Thank you for your support of Gorton in 2019. Without you we would not be a stable, thriving

community center! Last year, over 12,100 people came through our doors. That number

represents hours of laughing, learning, performing, listening, dancing and connecting. It

represents people of all ages convening in this place to help define what is meaningful to all of

us. Our patrons enjoyed experiences (as we like to say) that you just cannot get on your couch!

What’s more, while our patrons were off their couch, they ate food and had drinks at local

restaurants, bought flowers in town for performers, waited out someone else’s class at a local

coffee shop, and stopped by a local store for their needs while in town. Gorton is an employer

in our community, as are the ten other nonprofits that have offices in our building. Gorton

buys their goods and uses local services whenever possible. Local business owners support

Gorton and join us for numerous events throughout the year. Through it’s vibrancy, Gorton has

helped to add to the local economy! Our reach goes further than our doors, and we are proud

to be part of what makes Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and Lake County so special.

This is Gorton – none of which is possible without you. We are a nonprofit community center

that is entirely dependent on your generosity. Thank you for believing in us.

With gratitude,

Amy Wagliardo

2019 ANNUAL REPORT 1

2019 YEAR IN REVIEW

Centered on making moments that matter

COMMUNITY-

CENTERED EVENTS

We hosted many hundreds of

community members at free

events throughout the year.

Whether a blood drive or dog

adoption event, or one of our

annual favorites like the End of

Summer Block Party, Dog Day or

Kids Only Holiday Shop, it is our

goal to help our community

come together.

FIRSTS IN FILM

Gorton welcomed over 1,000

more film patrons in 2019 than in

2018. There were more than 150

individual films shown in 2019 at

69 film events and 93 screenings.

We welcomed 26 filmmaker

guests, assembled eight expert

panels and assembled three

expos on topics related to the

films we screened. We did all of

this while partnering with 23

community organizations. We

had the honor of screening our

first work-in-progress documentary

to a sold-out audience using

emerging technologies to host

our first virtual film guests.

LEARNING TO BE YOUR BEST

2019 was all about self-care!

Self-care physically, mentally

and emotionally through Yoga,

SalsaRobics, Tai Chi, Zumba,

Essential Oils and NIA. We stimulated

the community through

programs such as Navigating

the News, Ask Jane: Financial

Guidance for Working Women,

Cooking Classes with Marina

Boldrini Rivelis, Bridge and

Improv. And lastly, we invited you

to satisfy your emotional needs

with Meditation, Intuitive Animal

Readings, Reiki and How to Write

a Memoir, to name just a few.

SUMMER AT GORTON

Kids converged during the

summer to learn safety, theater,

cooking, sewing, robotics and

more. The Children’s Drop-in

Learning Center was once again

a hub for the under six set at

Camp Gorton, themed around

popular children’s storybooks.

New in 2020 will be all-day camp

for students ages 6-12 to better

serve working parents in our

community.

CHILDREN’S DROP-IN

LEARNING CENTER

Families have relied on the

Children's Drop-in Learning

Center for decades. New in 2019

was a shift to moving children

into the pre-K room closer to age

three and incorporating more

STEM learning in the pre-K room.

We also have a number of

regular visitors to the classroom

offering enrichment for our

students, including a monthly

storytelling time for the two’s

and pre-K classrooms by the

Lake Forest Library.

STRATEGIC PLAN

The Gorton Board approved a

new three-year strategic plan

in February of 2019. The four

areas of focus for 2019-2021 are

awareness, board development,

fundraising and strategic programming.

All goals were met or

exceeded in 2019. We are excited

about the progress we are

making with this new roadmap

in place. If you would like more

information on Gorton’s strategic

plan, please contact Amy

Wagliardo, Executive Director.

GORTON CENTER LIVE

MUSIC SERIES

Launched in 2019, Gorton

Center Live is bringing the best

and brightest musical artists to

Gorton! Toby Lightman kicked

off the series in October in the

John & Nancy Hughes Theater,

and it continued in December

with Justin Wade Tam and Angel

Snow in the intimate setting of

the Stuart Community Room.

The Chris White Trio performed

Charlie Brown Christmas Jazz in

the theater as well. The inaugural

series will continue through May

of 2020. This series has been

incredibly popular and we will

produce our next season this fall.

GREATER GOOD AT GORTON

Our partnership with Northwestern

Kellogg Center for Nonprofit

Management continued in 2019.

Our goal is to increase the

capacity of our resident nonprofit

tenants and the greater Lake

County nonprofit community.

The Greater Good Project is

generously supported by

The Grainger Foundation.

PARTNERSHIPS

We value partnering with other

organizations to bring the very

best to Gorton, start important

conversations, and showcase

local efforts. The list is too long

to mention here, but you can find

more about our partnerships at

www.gortoncenter.org/about/

partnerships.

1 | ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Fund supports Gorton all year long. Annual Fund donors

are the backbone of Gorton. As a non profit 501C(3), Gorton Community

Center depends on annual donations from our patrons every year to

thrive. Donations to our Annual Fund ensure our community has access

to high quality and diverse experiences. Gorton does not receive

taxpayer dollars to support our programming and activities – we are

wholly funded by donors and patrons like you!

2 | GORTON PRODUCER PROGRAM

The Gorton Producer Program lets you direct your gift to sponsor

specific events or programs at Gorton! Sponsors are named on all

event promotions and publicity. Sponsorships are available for all of

our planned programs – or bring your own ideas for a program you

would like to support at Gorton. We have a growing list of “Producers”

for 2020, let’s work together and find the right opportunity for YOU

to sponsor something you are passionate about: Live Music, Film,

Family events, Community events, children’s programs, Comedy

nights, Performing Arts or the Take a Seat program in our theater.

3 | PLANNED GIVING

Looking for another way to leave your legacy at Gorton? Planned

giving gives you a special connection with your community. With a

planned gift to Gorton, you can combine your desire to give to charity

with your overall financial, tax and estate planning goals. Contact

Catherine Yehle at catherine@gortoncenter.org or at 847-234-6060

to discuss the various planned giving options available.

Every effort was made to list the names of all our

contributors. If we inadvertently omitted your name

or listed it incorrectly, please contact us.

campaign. Renovation began in 2016 and was complete in 2017. Today, Gorton continues

to be the vibrant heart of our community.

We want to thank our special Donors, the Advisory Committee and Board of Directors for
