16 / MARKET REPORTWallenius SOL – New Growth WithSustainable RoRo Logistic for Forest IndustryIn April 2019, Wallenius Lines and Swedish Orient Linien (SOL) formed the joint shipping company WALLENIUSSOL. The headoffice is still located in Gothenburg. The fleet consists of five RoRo vessels for the traffic to andfrom the Gulf of Bothnia. These vessels are filled with paper products (fine paper and cardboard) on their waysouth, and back north with other cargo.Wallenius SOL offers also project operationswith its RoRo vessels WALLENIUSSOL has ordered up to four RoRo vesselsrun by LNG power, to be built 2019-2021by Wallenius Marine. With these vessels,combined with existing fleet, WALLE-NIUS SOL can offer transports withhigher efficiency, but at the same time reducingthe environmental footprint.One of the brains behind the creation ofthe new maritime company is CEO RagnarJohansson appointed as the NavalProfile of the Year 2019 by the GötaÄlvklubben. RoPax asked him about thenext steps.RoPax: You have been instrumental in thecreation of the new company WalleniusSOL last year.Could you give us a firstfeedback about the last month of operationas Wallenius SOL?Ragnar Johansson: Well the current operationof WALLENIUS SOL is about thesame as when it was 100% in the hands ofSOL. The big change will come 2021 whenthe new COA:s kicks in and the newbuildsare being delivered.Although I can say thatit has been very much interest around thenew company and a lot of new leads hasemerged that we are now working with.service from the Bay of Bothnia to NorthernGermany, Benelux and London area.Ragnar JohanssonRoPax: Wallenius SOL ordered four RoRovessel (5500 lane meter) in China withLNG propulsion. How iis the deliveryschedule ? Where will the new vessels operate?Do you have more new vessel inplanned for the next years?Ragnar Johansson: We have ordered upto four vessels meaning two firm and twooptions. The first one will be delivered inAugust -21 and the second one threemonths later. They will operate in the linerWallenius SOL“Only in the ports weare operating around theBay of Bothnia will about3 billion euros be investedin production facilities.”RoPax: Can you please give us an outlookfor the development of the transport marketfor 2020 of forest products betweenScandinavia and continental Europe? Howis the market situation?Ragnar Johansson: The investments decidedand planned by the forest industry inthe northern Baltic are huge. Only in theports we are operating around the Bay ofBothnia will about 3 billion euros be investedin production facilities. That shouldmean that the volumes should be there inthe future and for a long future. Lookingonly at 2020 I would say that it probably bean interim year with a few mill closures forinvestments. There is also a stagnation inthe economy in general that we also seesome indication of in the volumes ahead.But in general I’m convinced that the forestindustry has a very bright future longterm. It is environmental friendly, recyclableand you can do a lot more from thewood fibre tomorrow then we do today, i.e.totally new products.The forests in Sweden and Finland aregrowing faster than it is harvested.
