GC streetscape
program grows
By Andrea Cordle
Southwest Editor
Grove City officials want residents and
visitors to have a visual treat while traveling
through the city.
At the March 2 council meeting, Don
Walters, the community and business
relations officers for the city of Grove City,
presented a new streetscape plan.
Some residents may notice that every
spring, the city hangs planters on the light
poles in the Town Center. According to
Walters, more than 100 planters are hung
in the downtown area. That idea is going
to expand to other areas in the city.
Starting in May, an additional 400
planters will adorn the light poles along
Stringtown Road and State Route 665. The
planters will also stretch further out on
Broadway, from Ventura Boulevard down
to Interstate 270.
Eight individuals were recognized for their contributions to the community at the village of Urbancrest’s 12th annual Black
History Celebration on Feb. 28. Pictured here from left to right (with Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr. in the second row) are Rena
Saroiberry, S. Henry Warr, Mohamed Osman, Annie Pearl Sanders and Linda and Rodd Lawrence. Fellow honoree Sharon D.
Saunders was not present to collect her award, nor the one for her father, the late William Daniel Saunders. Annie Pearl Sanders
was accepting the award on behalf of her husband, Willie Sanders Sr.
Honoring leaders in the community
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
When Veronica Shepherd was first
elected to serve on the village of
Urbancrest council, she expected her
childhood friend and fellow council member
S. Henry Warr to be a stabilizing
force as she navigated these new waters.
And for the most part, she said, he was
just that but he didn’t always make it as
smooth and she wanted it to be.
“I could count on him to listen,” she
said with a laugh, “but I soon learned
that you may leave upset when he offered
you his advice and opinions.”
She said that when she became the
mayor years later, she often lamented to
Warr her belief that the council was hindering
progress on programs and ideas
she wanted to implement.
“I was hoping other people would see
my way of things as it would be much easier,”
she said, “but he would remind me
that it didn’t always work the way I
wanted it to. He would always tell the
truth, even if you didn’t like it.”
She said his steadfast belief in the purpose
of the council, of its mission to serve
the community before self, is one of the
reasons why he was “so deserving” of
recognition at the village of Urbancrest’s
12th annual Black History Celebration.
On Feb. 28, Warr was among eight
individuals receiving awards for their
contributions to the community. He was
recognized with the Distinguished
Service Award and for serving more than
three decades in the village government.
Warr said he was talked into running
for council in the late 1970s but never
expected to win, nor to serve as long as he
had.
“I didn’t expect to still be doing this at
my age,” said the Vietnam veteran, “but I
wouldn’t change it for the world.”
Though Warr lost the most recent election
to Deborah Larkins-Jackson by a flip
of the coin in November 2019 (their tie on
election night prompted a recount and
then coin toss by county election officials),
he was appointed to a position on the
planning commission.
Brian Niklos, age 53, formerly of Grove City,
Ohio passed away unexpectedly January 15, 2020 while
traveling to San Antonio, Texas. He was born in
Columbus, Ohio on August 13, 1966 to the late Anthony
(Tony) and Carolyn Niklos. He graduated from Grove
City High School class of 1985.
Brian worked as a telecommunications circuit
provisioner for many years which allowed him to follow his love of
travel. He was always known to his sister as a “World Traveler” as Brian
lived in many different states throughout the US from Ohio to
California and many places in between. Most recently he returned back
to Ohio to be closer to family, especially his nephews Bradlee and
Kameron.
Brian attended The Ohio State University and regardless of where his
travels took him, he was a diehard Ohio State fan. Not only did he have
a smile that could brighten up any room, he could entertain anyone
for hours whether it be family and friends or while in the spotlight on
stage with with his amazing voice.
Brian was preceded in death by his father and mother Anthony and
“No matter where people enter or leave the city,
they will be exposed to the planters,” said Walters. “It
is a real stroke of color and calmness.”
The planters contain a mix of flowers, including
petunias and amethysts. The planters will be hung in
May and will remain on the poles for 18 weeks.
According to Walters, the project will cost $95,000 a
year. The price includes the flowers and the maintenance
of the flowers.
Part of this streetscape project also includes banners.
The planters will be hung on every light pole and
banners will be placed on every other light pole, along
the chosen roadways.
Walters said this project falls in line with Grove
City 2050, which is an effort to update city plans and
policies to shape how the city grows. He said one of the
guiding principals of Grove City 2050 is to keep a
small-town feel.
“This helps to keep a positive community identity,”
said Walters.
Councilman Ted Berry asked city administrators if
there were any other ideas to beautify the city.
“Flowers are nice but is there more we can do along
62?” asked Berry.
The councilman said that area, along Broadway
COMMUNITY
Continued from page 1
“I am so proud to have served this historic village
and I am proud to continue to serve,” he said. “It was
been a true honor and a privilege.”
He said that when he recalls his time on the council,
he is most proud of its advancements. He cited an
upgrade to the storm sewer system, the widening of
residential roads and the building of a new municipal
complex as some examples that have taken place during
his tenure.
Warr said that while he feels “rested,” he is keeping
the door open to another council run in the future.
Also receiving the Distinguished Service Award
were the late William Daniel Saunders, his daughter
Sharon D. Saunders and Willie Sanders Sr. They were
recognized for their activism in the community and
willingness to put others above self.
William Daniel Saunders, more commonly known
as “Farmer” to village residents for his love of bib overalls,
was the first street commissioner, a council member,
a World War II veteran and a long-time custodian
at the Urbancrest Elementary School. He was also
honored for his spirituality.
“He was an intricate part of the village from a religious
standpoint as well,” said village Mayor Joseph
Barnes Sr.
Sharon D. Saunders was recognized not only for her
service to the village in governance (she served on
council and was noted by event organizer Elberta
Barnes for her willingness to “stand for what is right”)
but her humanitarian efforts and willingness to volunteer
at any event. Saunders also played an integral
role in the implementation of a children-led community
garden.
Former board of public affairs trustee Willie
Sanders Sr., said Barnes, is a tireless worker who
near Interstate 270, needs more work than just
planters. He said that area is going to be a gateway
into the redeveloped Beulah Park neighborhood.
“We have put a substantial investment in that
area,” said Berry.
City Administrator Chuck Boso said the planters
and banners will make a visual impact in that area but
said part of the problem in beautification and roadwork
efforts is that some of 62 is located in the city, but
other parts fall into the village of Urbancrest and private
properties.
The village of Urbancrest has been cooperative with
the city on beautification efforts.
In other news, council voted in favor of a dispatching
and communication services agreement with
Jackson Township. This new agreement will be for five
years.
According to the agreement, the township will pay
the city $175,282 in 2020 for emergency services dispatching.
According to Boso, the cost will go up 4 percent
each year of the contract. By 2024, the township
will pay the city $205,000.
The agreement will end on Dec. 31, 2024.
The city also provides dispatching and communication
services for Prairie and Pleasant townships.
“turned his own front yard into a tool shop” when
strong winds tore down limbs from trees in the village.
“When we had tornado-like winds sweep through
our area a few years ago, Mr. Sanders volunteered to
help people in the community remove tree limbs from
their yard and make repairs to homes and buildings.”
Barnes said his willingness to lend a hand — most
often unprompted — is what made Sanders worthy of
the award.
Receiving the Mayor Ellen Walker-Craig Jones
Community Service Award were attorneys Linda and
Rodd Lawrence, community activist Mohamed Osman
and restaurant manager Rena Saroiberry.
The Lawrence’s have been working with the village
for more than a decade, with Rodd serving as its current
law director. Barnes said the Lawrence’s have
been instrumental in “keeping the village legal” as it
pertains to contract negotiations, litigation and other
codified matters.
Osman was recognized for his work with the village
youth, especially with its growing Somali community.
Osman said he was inspired to create goal ceremonies
to celebrate their achievements no matter how small
they may seem.
“I want to encourage them to be somebody,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter if they are in kindergarten or all the
way in high school, I want them to know that they can
be somebody and can help lead others through encouragement
and by setting a good example.”
Saroiberry, a manager of the Subway restaurant on
Broadway in Grove City, was recognized for her “devotion
as a community partner.” Elberta Barnes said
Saroiberry has been volunteering and catering events
held throughout the village for more than a decade.

Voters to decide on library levy
Southwest Public Libraries will have a
1-mill renewal levy on the March 17 ballot.
Issue 20 will replace the current levy,
passed by voters in 2010. It expires at the
end of 2020. The levy generates $2.5 million
annually and represents approximately
40 percent of the library’s budget, said
Mark Shaw, director of Southwest Public
Libraries.
A renewal means property owners in the
communities the library system serves
would see no tax increase. Per $100,000
property valuation, homeowners would
continue paying approximately $30 per
year, or $2.55 per month, until the 10-year
levy expires. Senior citizens eligible for the
Homestead Exemption would pay less.
The library’s district includes four townships
in southwestern Franklin County:
Jackson Township (Grove City and
Urbancrest), Prairie Township (Lincoln
Village, Galloway and the Westland area),
Pleasant Township (Harrisburg and
Darbydale) and Franklin Township. The
system operates two libraries, the Grove
City Library and the Westland Area
Library.
If approved, funds generated by the levy
would go toward the operation of the
library to pay for materials, building maintenance
and operations, as well as library
programs.
Shaw said the library system’s board of
trustees opted for a straight renewal to
avoid increasing taxes on the district’s taxpayers.
If voters do not approve the 1-mill
levy renewal, Shaw said tough decisions
Firefighters Mitch Shroyer, Aaron Price, Jack Ellis and Lieutenant Jeremy Johnson
demonstrate the Lucas Device and new cardiac arrest protocols at the Pleasant
Township board meeting.
Training to save lives
By Hannah Poling
Staff Writer
The Pleasant Township Fire
Department will use new cardiac arrest
protocols that could help to save lives.
Firefighters attended the Feb. 25
meeting to present this method to the
board of trustees.
“Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the
number one killers of people in our country,”
said Pleasant Township Fire Chief
Brian Taylor. “You have a 10 percent survival
rate under our current cardiac
arrest protocol.”
Fire department officials have come
up with a new protocol to put in place,
which has been successful throughout
the country.
In cardiac arrest, the patient is not
breathing and their heart is not pumping
so the main goal is to circulate the blood
flow by doing continuous chest compressions.
The fire station will start using a
Lucas Device, a mechanical CPR device
that performs 102 compressions per
minute. A neck strap is placed on the
patient to help keep the machine stable.
A nasal cannula is placed in the patient’s
nostrils to force airflow into the lungs. A
mega mover is slid under the patient for
easier transport and then the patient is
slid up onto a wedge which, according to
Lt. Ryan Wihl, is proven to help provide
better blood flow to and from the brain.
Compressions are paused for two seconds
to identify if the patient needs shocked.
The Lucas device never stops compressions
during the shock to attempt to
regain the pulse.
“Our new cardiac arrest program, we
hope, will offer folks about a one in two
survival rate. That’s a huge increase in
what we have had for the last 40 years as
a fire department,” said Taylor.
Emergency responders will start using
the protocol in early March.
The fire department is also in partnership
with Prairie, Jackson, and Scioto
township fire departments who will all be
changing to the same cardiac arrest program.
“If we can do even 1 percent better
than what we are doing today, we are
find an apartment community with both.
●Pet-Friendly: What are the pet policies and
monthly fees? Do they have amenities for
pets right in the community?
Moses-Mouser and Associates’ tips for
individuals looking for a new Ophthalmology
Practice in Grove City:
●Our practice spends the time to explain
and discuss patient diagnosis. It turns out
this is quite unique in the day and age of the
rapid assembly line patient experience.
Many offices see 50 plus patients a day per
provider. We keep our patient volume below
40 a day per provider to provide the time we
need to explain a patient's condition and answer
all questions.
●We have comprehensive eye care as we
provide both ophthalmology (eye surgery)
and optometry (glasses and contact lenses,
including complex contact lens fitting) expertise.
●We offer the latest technology in
2020 Census:
Why does it “Count”?
The 2020 Census is about
to get underway and communities
around the nation, including
Grove City, ‘count’
on it for a variety of reasons.
Grove City is ready to do
its part to ensure an accurate
count, beginning with
the establishment of a committee
and online resources
residents can access 24/7.
Communities know how to
best capture their local audiences
and have taken charge
of that task.
Jimmy Hoppel, a development
planner with Grove City and a committee
member, explained that there are
two goals: to promote awareness of the Census
and to reach the hardest-to-count populations.
Hardest-to-count may be defined as
someone between addresses or very young
children.
The biggest benefit to a highly-accurate
Census count is to more accurately send federal
funding dollars to Grove City. These
funds will affect overall quality of living for
all residents–roads, public transportation,
public schools, family assistance. An adequately-funded
community will be a place
that business can continue to thrive and
grow.
The Census also provides data of value
to businesses and community members.
Projections for future business growth are
created using Census data, and the 2020
Census will provide the most recent and accurate
data of growth. Businesses can use
this to decide to grow or even expand into
new geographic locations.
Jimmy provided an interesting statistic
from university researchers who have calculated
how much money is missed when a
count is inaccurate. For the state of Ohio, it
(For a side note we did find out that Garret
Mouser, MD is a 1994 Grove City High
School graduate!)
Telhio’s tips for individuals looking for a
new banking experience:
●Align yourself with the right partners
to help your business grow. Start with a
banker, CPA and an attorney.
●Always have a plan for your business
and your finances. Things can change and if
they do, make sure to have a backup plan.
●Keep a pulse on your business finances.
Review them regularly to understand
what’s going on at any given moment.
E-Merge Real Estate’s tips for individuals
searching for a great real estate
agency:
●Get pre-approved.
●Choosing a real estate agent with experience
does matter.
was estimated that $1800 per person per
year (over 10 years) was missed.
While the Census may seem straightforward,
and easier than ever given the online
option, for some it can be confusing how to
answer. This may be due to a recent move
or how to account for college or recentlygraduated
adult children who split time between
their family home and a campus
residence. The Census website has plenty of
answers for these specific cases and many
more.
As mentioned, responding online is a
new option this year, making for as Jimmy
put it, a “multitude of ways to respond.” He
assured that Census workers, should they
come to your home, will have proper credentials
and also operate under a lifetime confidentiality
agreement in regards to the
information they gather. A home visit is
considered a ‘last resort’ given the online,
mail-in, and phone options.
Business owners are encouraged to not
only account for their household correctly,
but encourage their employees and colleagues
to do the same. Materials are available
online that are suitable for break
rooms and employee common areas.
●Having patience in this hot market.
Newcomer Cremations, Funerals’ tips
for individuals looking for a quality funeral
home :
●Funerals and cremations can be expensive,
but not at Newcomer. We saved Grove
City and Columbus families over $2 million
last year.
●Planning ahead for funeral and cremation
services can help families save thousands,
and gain valuable peace of mind!
●Preplanning allows you to fully document
your wishes, eliminating confusion
and removing the burden of decision-making
from your loved ones after your passing.
●Getting started with pre-planning is
simple and there’s no obligation. You can estimate
costs on our website at: Newcomer-
Q & A with the Evans Center
www.columbusmessenger.com
Here in Grove City, the Evans Center located
on Dudley Avenue, is home to the senior
center.
We caught up with Tammy Jefferson
with the Evans Center to give us an
overview of their services, including what
you might not know.
Q: Like most senior centers, the Evans
Center offers a variety of services, but
what are a few services that are overlooked
or sometimes people forget are offered?
A: Some of the programs we offer that
may be unknown to the community are support
groups, daily lunch and socialization
through Lifecare Alliance, computer lab access,
a fitness room with everything you
need to stay fit, group fitness classes, and
monthly blood pressure screenings.
Another wonderful program that may be
unheard of is SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement
Together) which informs participants
on community services, as well as
crime and safety issues pertinent to seniors.
Jackson Township Community Cares connects
seniors with our fire department to
learn about their community paramedic
program.
Q: People can be shy and hesitant about
meeting new people and a new place at
any age, but how do you encourage seniors
(and their families) to come join the
fun and enjoy the resources the Evans
Center offers?
A: After a tour to show newcomers the
center, we try to connect them with an activity
they’re comfortable with to break the
ice! Some great, low-key activities we suggest
to a new participant include chair volleyball
and our lunch program.
We can introduce you to other participants
with similar interests, and show you
everything we have to offer. Bringing a family
member with you on your tour often
helps create a sense of comfort when exploring
something new.
The people we meet are often surprised
with how cozy and welcoming our center
truly is.
Q: How would someone go about getting
involved with the Evans Center as a
senior?
A: The first step to involvement in the
center is to step inside for a tour! No appointment
is necessary. From there, we will
also introduce you to services and activities
that are interesting or important to you.
The Grove City Senior Club complements
our center and you can learn more about the
club, too!
Q: Are there volunteer opportunities
available, and is there an age requirement
for volunteering?
A: We do have a volunteer program and
are in the process of finding people in the
community to share their talents, skills,
and/or knowledge at the center.
If you are eligible to participate at the
center, you are also eligible to volunteer!
Some of our volunteer opportunities include
greeting participants at the front desk, answering
phones, teaching classes, sharing
knowledge through Lunch & Learn sessions
or seminars, setting up and tearing down
for center celebrations, and so much more!
We do welcome volunteers of any age that
have something unique to offer.
Q: What is one (or a few!) of your personal
favorite activities offered?
A: My personal favorite activity would be
our breakfast, lunch, and supper clubs!
Our adventures to local restaurants
around Columbus offers a huge opportunity
for socialization and engaging with friends
in a new atmosphere.
These trips offer us a chance to try new
restaurants and foods together. In addition,
our Wii bowling league, game days, and
chair volleyball sessions are a favorite because
of the friendly competition and pure
fun they offer.
Lunch & Learn sessions, educational
classes, and support groups such as Conversations
About Loss and Alzheimer’s support
are a great chance to connect on a more personal
level and to learn and engage in more
serious topics.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to
share that would benefit our senior community
and their loved ones?
A: Our programs and services are formed
with you in mind! Senior centers sometimes
have a negative stigma attached to them.
We cannot stress enough that the Evans
Center is extremely active and our participants
are very engaged.
From parties and dances, to our competitive
Wii bowling league, to day trips and
trying new restaurants, our goal is to
squash the stigmas and offer you a safe
place to socialize, engage in leisure, and remain
active in the community. Let me take
this opportunity to personally invite you to
visit us and see that our center was built for
you!
For more information
To learn more about the Evans Center,
reach out to them via phone at: (614) 277-
1060, or stop by for a visit at their 4330
Dudley Avenue address. They’re open Monday-Friday
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Southwest Community Leadership lends support to Special Olympics
By Sarah Hann
It may seem like the 2019-20 class of the
Southwest Community Leadership Program
just formed, but they’re well underway in
making big contributions to the community
as classes before.
In addition to learning about a variety of
local programs, departments and services,
the Program class completes a project benefitting
the Grove City Area. It’s up to each
class to examine community needs and then
determine which aspect of the community
they will support; what will be their cause.
Previous classes have chosen a variety of
programs in the community, and have even
established the Farmers’ Market.
It’s not a decision made lightly and much
brainstorming went into determining who
or what to support during this year’s class
project. From that brainstorming, the
South-Western City School District Special
Olympics basketball program was selected
to benefit. It came to light that these teams
have a budget of only $500, receive no additional
funding, and use hand-me-down uniforms
from the schools’ varsity and junior
varsity teams.
Three of the district’s high schools–Central
Crossing, Grove City, and Franklin
Heights, have teams of players and cheerleaders
who showcases their skills in competitions
throughout Central Ohio. The plan
for the Leadership Program Class is to secure
additional funding, at least $1,500 for
each school, so that teams can purchase
equipment, matching uniform items, and
other needs.
Currently the Leadership Program Class
has raised $500 toward their goal, thanks to
a 50/50 raffle they held during StoryPoint
Grove City’s February craft show. The class
has at least $4,000 to go and additional
fundraising opportunities are being
planned.
Money is important, but moral support
also goes a long way. Leadership Program
Class members recently attended the Skills
Competition between the three teams. This
was a great chance for class members to
meet the young athletes they’re supporting,
and also show the community what the Special
Olympics program is all about.
Grove City Chamber Foundation
awards scholarships for master’s program
The Grove City Chamber Foundation
awarded its first scholarship for master’s
program to Andrea Ruede at OhioHealth
last month.
In addition to the scholarship, Andrea is
also taking part in the partnership with
Franklin University, where students receive
a 20 percent tuition discount and free
books.
This program is open to all Chamber
members/employees of Chamber member
businesses, and more can be learned at
their website.
Foundation President Greg Dawkins is
proud of the progress the Foundation has
made and is excited about the continued
growth of the Foundation and its opportunities.
“I’m honored to be part of a great group
of folks that are providing additional educational
opportunities to the community and
our business community.
The work we do today honors those that
laid the groundwork for the foundation and
prepares for the future for those that follow
us,” he said.
It’s an exciting time for educational opportunities
with the Grove City Chamber
Foundation and the Grove City Area Chamber
of Commerce.
The Foundation’s scholarship opportunities
continue to grow as an Urbana University
scholarship was recently added for
graduating seniors residing in the South-
Western City School District. Educational
partnerships for the Chamber also continue
to grow as Ohio Dominican University now
also offers a partnership program, including
application fees waived and various tuition
discounts. More can be learned from this
flyer.
Andrea Ruede received the chamber’s
first scholarship for a master’s program.
But, the Chamber Foundation is gearing
up for another ‘scholarship season’ with first
deadlines as soon as March 20.
Included in the March 20 deadline is the
Chamber Affiliate Scholarship, which is
open to employees and family members of
Chamber-member businesses.
In addition to application dates, the
Foundation’s fundraiser night will be April
10 and tickets are available.
Upcoming dates:
•March 20: Deadline for Chamber Affiliate
Scholarship, High School Scholarship,
and Urbana University Scholarships.
•April 10: Annual Foundation
Fundraiser.
Information
Information and applications for the
March 20 scholarships, and others, can be
project completed
Melissa Forney, an art teacher at West
City Arts Council grant to fund an art project
called “Spread Love Not Hate.” The
project, now complete, involved about 150
the five virtues promoted at the school:
Perseverance, Self-Discipline, Compassion,
Responsibility and Respect. The paintings
are now hanging in the school.
The Arts Council presently is accepting
grant applications. The council’s grant program
is open to individuals and institutions
making application. Applicants must
demonstrate financial need to complete a
special art project or program.
