The global cosmetic market has grown steadily and currently worth over $300bn (according to
IBISWorld, 2016). It is consistently changing due to innovation, and diversity that has been driven by
the consumer. With development of social media and the continuous drive of urbanisation globally,
the rise of expenditure for cosmetics is continuously increasing.
However, every individual is very different.
Whilst there is a variety of each product that could be better suited, it has increasingly become
more difficult to choose what product to buy. A strong factor to consider is the current situation in
the environment they live in which faces new challenges to the consumer.
“I started suffering from skin dehydration and oiliness when I was living and working in China,
where the climate was hot and heavily polluted in urban areas. The skin care products I used were
not helping with daily moisturising, leaving my skin oily but dry especially around the T- Zone, which
affected my work, confidence and well being. The problem was affected by the changing seasons
during my one year stay in the country. The Chinese skincare products I employed did not suit the
needs of my skin and were likely created specifically to the Chinese demographic.”
