It is often said that we can't see the forest for the trees. It's true... we are so obsessed by the

here and now that becomes difficult to obtain a broader and clearer view of life – the bigger

picture. It happens to us frequently, on a daily basis, especially when we talk in terms of

social media. More often than not we tend to associate the number of likes and followers

with being a better or worse professional, focusing on the tallest trees –those with the

most followers– and too often neglecting the beauty of the forest that surrounds us. That

is why today, after the fabulous success of the 2020 International Hairdressing Awards,

I enthusiastically celebrate the decision

of awarding the first International Hair

Influencer Award in history to Sam Villa

...because it sends the right message

to our industry: it is not trees, my friends, but the forest where we should look more frequently.

No matter how loud or emphatically something is said, it is the meaning that really matters.

And although Sam Villa is one of the professionals with the greatest reach on social media,

with hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, what

distinguishes him from other influencers in our world is his determination to promote respect,

It doesn't matter how many

followers you have: every

time you use your voice on

social media you are exerting

your influence on others.

Think about it...

positivity and admiration among colleagues. The #ArtistsSupportingArtists movement is the

means by which he advocates that sharing is the greatest gift we can give one another… to

support each other so we can all grow and prosper together. Sam firmly believes that we should

all THINK before we act on social media, through five simple steps: T – Is the information TRUE?

/ H – Is something really HAPPENING or is it made up or exaggerated? / I – Is the

content INSPIRING? / N – Is it NECESSARY? / K – Is it KIND? The next time you use

your voice on social media –no matter the size of your speaker– consider it for a moment.

As Sam says, “You could be that person who inspires a young stylist not to give up… who

encourages someone to take a creative risk… to applaud a job well done… or you might

be that person who is fueled to accomplish your goals based on the encouragement of others.”

Just THINK about it.

Billie Eilish by Mara Roszak

Almost as if they were predicting her amazing success at the 62nd Grammy Awards, Billie

Eilish and Mara Roszak came up with an incredibly harmonious look for the barely-come-of-age

artist. Custom Gucci garb and her signature black hair were the inspiration for this overall look.

All she needed was a touch of complementary neon green at the roots and the perfect blow-out

with just a touch of volume. “I wanted her to look like herself, letting her vibrant hair color and

her incredible outfit shine. A straight blow out with volume was just the simplicity the look

needed,” explained Mara. To get this look, Mara relied on her stand-by Sebastian Professional

styling products. She started out by prepping the hair with Sebastian Professional Volupt root

volume spray on damp hair and blow dried with a medium-sized brush for volume at the

roots. Flyaways were tamed with a tiny dab of Sebastian Professional Eruptek, while Sebastian

Professional Shaper hairspray adding some all-over gold and shine.

Priyanka Chopra by Harry Josh

Baywatch star Priyanka Chopra took to the red carpet in a show-stopping sequin-and opal-encrusted

ivory gown by Ralph and Russo, that seemed to channel Cher's osé flair with a plunging neckline that

ran all the way down to her navel. Not many could carry off such a daring look, but not many can

boast this beauty's stunning attributes, among which her alluring and luscious locks! Indeed, Celebrity

Stylist Harry Josh spontaneously took a reading and took the “less is more” approach to complete

Priyanka's total look. “Priyanka’s dress had old school Bob Mackie and Cher vibes, so I wanted to play

off of that. Luxurious, long, sleek hair was an important part of getting the look right.” he revealed.

Harry started out with Goldwell Kerasilk Style Forming Shape Spray to protect against damage from

hot tools before applying Goldwell Kerasilk Style Smoothing Sleek Spray to smooth and control

flyaways with his Harry Josh Pro Tools Ceramic Flat Iron. Ten rows of Great Lengths GL Tapes Tapein

Hair Extensions added va-va-voom length. Goldwell Kerasilk Style Accentuating Finishing Creme

all over kept everything in place for the night, at least where her hair was concerned!

Demi Lovato by Paul Norton

Demi Lovato made her highly anticipated return to the music industry during the 62nd Annual

Grammy Awards and once gain turned to IGK and celebrity hairstylist, Paul Norton to create a

magical look for her comeback performance. Norton decided to add just enough interest and texture

to Demi’s lush long lengths to offset her stunning white gown, created especially for the artist by

designer Christian Siriano. For starters, IGK Thirsty Girl Coconut Milk Leave In Conditioner was

applied for frizz control and heat protection. Norton then applied IGK Beach Club Volumizing

Texture Spray just two inches away from her hair from roots to ends to add volume and texture.

To get natural volume, Norton tousled her hair, gently lifting at the roots, until her strands were

90% dry. A 1-inch flat iron was used to create gentle waves. Then Paul applied about 7 or 8 pumps

of IGK Cry Baby Serum from the mid-shaft to ends and edges of hair, using just his fingers to life

and separate. IGK First Class Dry Shampoo added more root lift at the crown before finishing with

IGK 1800HOLDME for overall hold and shine!

When we see hairdressers in their salons, behind the chair,

in their smocks, chatting us up... we would never suspect

what some of them are really thinking about. Marie Scarano

We all know what hairdressers do for a living: they cut, color, style and treat hair. They

make us look better and feel good about ourselves. Sometimes they combine make-up

services and manicures, or bundle their services into bridal packages. Then there are the

celebrity artists who are hairdressers to the stars, wowing us and making us dream when

we see the results on Hollywood's red carpets. But all of this pales when we see what the

most ambitious and creative hairdressing artists are capable of creating for industry events

and fashion week runways worldwide. They usually glean their inspiration from various

sources: their travels and foreign cultures, photographs, paintings, sculpture, music, nature

and even the past and the future. Hair, make-up, wardrobe, background, and lighting must

e tweaked to perfection. Often wigs and other extravagant accessories are used to obtain

the desired length, color, or texture. It can take months of planning and mood boards,

trial and error, incredible professional skills, patience and determination. And given the

intensity of every detail, the photographer must also be capable of capturing not merely

an image - but a vision. Absolutely nothing is left to chance. And when the shoot is finally

over, the photographs can be truly spectacular, opening our minds up to new worlds,

defining the boundaries between commerce and artistry, and the realization that even

hair can be a medium that has nothing to envy of paints, or clay, or marble in the eyes and

"Shooting in the VIP loft

and downstairs with on set

features we were able to capture

a few different moods for the

collection," says Haase.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Dirty Pool" was the inspiration for the new, awesome collection by Michael Haase, and it's

easy to understand why. Haase's creative mind is set into motion like the cue ball during the break that sends the

other balls scattering: from the 2020 Pantone color of the year –Classic Blue– Haase's synapses raced from street

to runway, to Bauhaus architecture, to photoshop. Even the decor of Haase's new PlatinumBlack Salon reflects his

eclectic tastes in everything, explaining why he justaposed a Game of Throne vibe with accents in pure white Italian

mod. "The pendant lights hanging from tracks lend a medieval feel to the architectural paint of Black Steel and

Deep Plum walls. As always, frosted handblown sconces give every client a beautifully youthful glow any time of

day," shares Haase. A VIP loft was designed to cater to discriminating clients and celebrities, while men can count

on a classic straight-edge shave, and a roster of cut, color, styling, and make-up specialists round out the offerings

for this salon in the heart of Westwood Village. No wonder the new neighborhood greeted them with open arms!

40 years &

counting!

What has made John Paul Mitchell Systems ® such

a uniquely successful company for the past 40 years?

A focus on people, products, and the planet. Marie Scarano

Forty years ago it all started with two friends and a dream. John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell with just

$700 in their pockets, started a company that would support the success of hairdressers and provide

salon-quality products at an affordable price. John Paul recalls, “We should have gone bankrupt perhaps

50 times during the first year.” Resources were so limited that the Paul Mitchell® brand’s now-famous

black & white packaging was a result of not being able to afford colored ink. Today, the second generation

is represented by Michaeline DeJoria as Vice Chairman and Angus Mitchell who, after his father's death in

1989, stepped in as a platform artist and educator as well as being the model and spokesperson for the

men’s line MITCH®. Despite hugely lucrative offers from public corporations to buy John Paul Mitchell

Systems®, they refuse to sell the company because of the initial vow Paul and John Paul took to stand by

the professional beauty industry. Indeed, John Paul Mitchell Systems® co-founder John Paul DeJoria created

a 360-year trust, which guarantees the company may not be sold for generations to come. In the meantime,

the company itself and the individual owners stand by John Paul's mantra of "Success unshared is failure".

Over the years, John Paul Mitchell Systems® and Paul Mitchell® Schools have donated millions of dollars to

hundreds of global philanthropic causes; from environmental protection to children’s charities and human

rights and products are cruelty free. A toast from all of us to a prosperous future!

What’s the

buzz?

Flashy, colorful, dynamic, smart, and good-looking...

here is Tinder for Tools. A round-up of the latest models

and technologies to keep you at the top of your game.

Estetica decided to dedicate this article to all the "hardware" you need in a cutting-edge

salon, from simple analog combs and brushes to ergonomic and wireless clippers to a

variety of heat styling tools, blow-dryers, curling and smoothing irons, and more... Because

the market and technologies are changing at such a fast pace that it's harder to keep up

with everything. Sometimes it may seem like a daunting task to do all the research, figure

out what's in and what's out, and which older models of yours could be upgraded to save

you time and keep you pushing your styling benchmark and your clients happy. Quality

professional tools may not come cheap, but they contribute to savings in the long run and

keep you working more efficiently, and as we all know... Time is money. So take some

time to browse through some of these options before making your final choice. Take into

consideration overall design to add some oomph to your decor and performance.

beauty features cordless run time of up to 4 hours. Barbers can

even create a skeleton trimmer with the Absolute Hitter by

removing the drop-top option for a see-through skeleton

line, easier cleaning, and enhanced precision. Moreover, each

comes with gold, rose gold and chrome interchangeable cases.

What is important to remember is that performance is key, but to maintain optimal

performance, it is also necessary to carry out some cleaning and maintenance

operations, especially on clippers, and not only for hygienic purposes, but also to prevent

build-up of products and clippings that may eventually cause dragging and stalling.

When choosing new tools, remember to do your research to find the one that is best

for the work you intend to do. For example, there are differences between ceramic,

titanium, and tourmaline plates in hair straighteners. Ceramic irons are phenomenal

at holding heat; they get hot and stay hot, although it may take them longer to reach

working temperature. Since the plates on ceramic irons are so smooth, they are less

likely to tangles when pulling the straightener through hair. They can do an exceptional

job and do away with most of the frizz when used at a suitable temperature. Titanium is

the best choice for coarse, thick, wavy hair because of how it successfully conducts heat.

Titanium straighteners, in general, get hotter than ceramic ones and titanium delivers

heat more uniformly than less expensive metals. Instead, tourmaline is a crushed brittle

gray or black mineral that occurs as a prismatic crystal in granitic and other rocks.

These crystals are crushed into a fine powder and infused into the flat iron’s metal

The T3 Lucea ID Flat Iron features 9 digitally-controlled

temperature settings to provide advanced heat precision that

plate. Therefore a ceramic or titanium iron may be tourmaline. Tourmaline flat irons

have a very high output of negative ions (much more than ceramic alone) and create

extremely sleek, shiny hair. wavy and fine hair surfaces.

But stay tuned, as even these materials are relatively new on the market and ongoing

research means that, like wet products and color, they will be upgraded or other options

may appear. Moreover, keep in mind that you are running a business, and as such you

should be considering apps and software to help you manage your salon, from general

accounting to booking appointments to keeping track of stock and even to maintain a

profile and log for each client so you needn't remember the exact formula from her last

visit. After all, today technology is the hairdresser's best friend.

called www.wellacontest.com where

salons and technology partners

submitted their interest in being part of

the Wella augmented salon experience.

For the second year

in a row, Wella

Professionals was

present at the

prestigious

Consumer

Electronics Show,

showcasing two outstanding new

developments in smart salon

technology: Smart Mirror and

Color DJ. The award-winning

Smart Mirror, developed in

partnership with CareOS, enhances

the hair color experience from

consultation to aftercare with live

augmented reality (AR) hair color

try on, facial recognition that

enables the retrieval of past looks,

and 360° video capture to view the

hair at every angle. On the other

hand, Color DJ is a world’s first

in-salon device giving hairdressers

the power to create for their clients

ultra-personalized color masks.

With over 60 billion color

combinations possible, in addition

to personalized levels of

conditioning properties and

fragrance, salon clients walk away

with a bespoke, take-home product

completely tailored to their needs.

Both innovations are “technologyenabled

services that salons can

add to their existing book to draw

more people into the salons and

which also drive excitement with

their existing client base,” says

Chris Chesebro, Senior Vice

President, Digital Transformation

& Ecommerce at Coty Professional

Beauty. Advancing the careers of

hairdressers globally is at the heart

of Wella Professionals’ mission to

Make Change, and this is firmly

evidenced in the brand’s efforts to

shape the future of the hair salon

experience. “These innovations

speak to our commitment to

advance the experience of

hairdressers and salon clients.

These are not one-off gimmicks

they are mainstream changes which

will future-proof and help drive

growth of the salon professional

industry,” said Sylvie Moreau,

President, Coty Professional Beauty.

too warm, but finally a

blend of warm and neutral

undertones that make it

possible to achieve a sand

With the needs of

hairdressers in mind, this is now a

fool-proof process, because RUSK

has now added Dark Sand

Blonde, Medium Sand Blonde,

and Light Sand Blonde shades

to their deepshine® Gloss Demi-

Permanent Liquid Color and

Pure Pigments Permanent Cream

Color formuations. Now it is

easier to get the precise shade your

client wants to stay on trend.

MARINE EXTRACTS

at the expense of compromising

hair health. This is why Micropigment

Technology allows the

color to easily penetrate deeply

into the hair shaft, with a view

to ensuring longer-lasting hair

color with maximum vibrancy

and shine that your budget-savvy

clients are demanding.

When this is combined with the

proprietary Marine Nutrient

Complex for nourishing benefits

to seal, strengthen and protect hair

throughout the coloring process,

both you and your clients notice

the difference. The nourishing

benefits of the Marine Extracts

added to the formulation help seal,

strengthen and protect the hair

throughout the coloring process

for healthy-looking hair with

incredible shine. Indeed, the

nourishing power of red algae,

sea kelp, vitamins and moisturerich

lipids work to even out

hair’s porosity, seal the cuticle

and strengthen hair fiber to

rebuild hair’s natural look.

Now it’s even easier to obtain a sand blonde hue, thanks to 3 new shades in 2 RUSK Deepshine® formulations:

Gloss Demi-Permanent Liquid Color and Pure Pigments Permanent Cream Color formuations. Hair is healthy

and shiny, with great grey coverage.

The time has

finally come: the new

Precision Colouring

tools from Denman

take the art of

technical coloring to

a level never before

dreamed possible.

esigned by international

color expert Jack

Howard, the new

range of Precision

Colouring tools by

Denman have been

created to enhance and

further the work of the serious

colour technician. For the first time

the simple tint brush has been

re-thought and re-designed as a

precision tool. When asked about

Color

weapons

the importance of tools for colorists

in 2020, Jack responded. “Beyond

critical – absolutely essential. Color

is no long just a tint or a set of foils,

it’s all encompassing and superdetailed

highly technical skill. Hair

cutters have high precision scissors,

and so it’s about time colourists had

precision tools for their craft too.”

And of course, he’s absolutely right!

“I had been

frustrated for years

with the quality

and performance of

colouring brushes,

so I decided to

design one myself.”

Jack Howard

Denman’s Precision

Colouring Brushes

come in three sizes;

Small – for detailing

and micro-Balayage,

Medium – for classic

Balayage, re-touching

and highlights and

Large – for panel

coloring, pasting

and glazing.

BY A COLORIST

FOR COLORISTS

This new patented tint brush

design incorporates ‘Temple

Technology’ – where high-quality

synthetic bristles are angled to

create a narrow and long-lasting tip

for detailed and precise color

application. The bristle length and

angled design enables the brush to

hold just the right amount of

colour without overloading or

reducing the precision edge.

Moreover, the perfectly balanced

ergonomically designed handle

is contoured to fit comfortably in

the the hand for exquisite control

and a level of precision not possible

with traditional tint brushes.

An integral part of the Denman’s

Precision Colouring Kit is the

uniquely designed Balayage Board

which was created using Jack’s own

extensive experience and skill as a

Balayage artist. Designed to be

ambidextrous, the double-sided

Balayage Board has both textured

and smooth panelled areas.

The smooth side is a palette for

holding colour and blending while

the textured side is designed to

securely hold sections of hair for

detail colouring. And as with the

Precision Brushes, the Balayage

Board has a sculptured handle

for grip and comfort.

The Denman Precision Colouring

tool kit also includes a dedicated

Mixing Brush exclusively for

mixing and preparing colours;

leaving the Precision Brushes

solely for the technical work,

avoiding splaying and prolonging

the brushes’ pristine condition.

Close shaves

Expert tips and tricks

on how to stay at

the top of your game

with a shaver that

provides the ultimate

comfort and precision.

The ProFoil Lithium Plus Titanium

Foil Shaver features a soft-grip

ndis global educator, Baldy, explains

why he appreciates the ProFoil®

Lithium Plus Titanium Shaver

more than a traditional razor

and how he uses it behind the

chair. Plus, he gives tips on

the best way to properly

maintain your shaver to ensure

maximum cutting performance.

FULL HEAD SHAVE

I have a good number of clients

that are losing their hair naturally,

and as a result, they like to keep

it as short as possible. Once a

week they’re in for a full-head

shave down to the skin; not only

is it nice and safe (nick-free), but

I feel nothing gets it as short and

smooth as my ProFoil Plus shaver.

LOW TAPER FADE

I use my ProFoil Plus to finish on

the nape of the neck and from the

edge of the ears down to the side

burns and keep these areas as clean

as possible. In the smaller transition

areas, I turn it face up and use just

one foil, and for larger areas I turn

it face down to use both foils.

SENSITIVE AREAS

Last, but by no means least, I use it

on the throat underneath the beard

line. Once I’ve lined out the beard,

I use my ProFoil Plus shaver to

finish under the beard line - giving

my clients a clean, safe shave

without the mess of creams or gels.

Tip: To help reduce friction with

clients who may have excessive skin

oils, use a small amount of talc

powder to improve glide.

MAINTAINING PERFORMANCE

After every use, I make sure my

ProFoil Plus shaver is clean,

lubricated and hygienic before the

next client. I take off the foil head

and clean out any fragments and

debris with a small brush, then I

give the blades a spray with Andis

Cool Care Plus Spray. I wipe away

any excess fluid, put the foil head

back on, give the foil one last spray,

and then wipe away any excess.

Also, don’t forget to replace your

foils and cutters on a regular basis

to keep those shaves smooth!

This heavy-duty tool

is designed for strong

cutting power and

handling on-scalp fading,

clipper-over-comb,

and bulk hair removal.

hen first released

in 2018, the Cordless

Senior immediately

took the barbering world

by storm. But alas! - at

that time, the clipper

was only available for

a limited period of time. Today

we can say that it was gone but

never forgotten! Because finally

this iconic tool that barbers

and professional stylists have

been asking for is officially back

and here to stay - permanently!

Barbers absolutely love this

heavy-duty tool because it is

designed to have cutting power

strong enough to be able to handle

everything from on-scalp fading

to clipper-over-comb and even

bulk hair removal. “The Cordless

Senior is something you always

wished for as a barber but would

never believe could happen in

a million years,” says Wahl

Education and Artistic Team

Seniorpower

member Garland “G-Whiz” Fox

(@thisisgwhiz). “And here it is,

the Cordless Senior, the most

powerful Wahl cordless clipper

hands down.”

THE ULTIMATE

MUSCLE MACHINE

The very name of the “Senior”

implies all the venerable expertise

and know-how that has been built

into this clipper. Few models on

the market can boast the technical

prowess of this tool. Indeed, the

Cordless Senior features a

lithium-ion battery that gives the

tool a 70 plus minute run time

before needing another charge.

This clipper sports a sleek black

and gold casing that allows

barbers to cut in style, while

delivering on all the power.

Moreover, the tool comes with

three Premium Cutting Guides

(1/16” – 3/16”) and with a 5-Star

surgical fade blade that allows a

higher blade speed. Although

lightweight, this iconic clipper

has a powerful motor that places

it at the forefront of haircutting

technology. “I believe this clipper

will continue to be a favorite of

our long-time Wahl fans and

will attract a new fan base looking

for a lot of power in a cordless

option,” says Anne Marie Kollias,

Wahl Professional’s U.S. Director

of Sales and Marketing.

In addition to its no-nonsense and ergonomic design,

the absolute power of the Wahl Cordless Senior lies in

its unmatched versatility in getting different looks with

a variety of techniques.
