DAY AT SMWYC
OPENING
By Commodore Wendy Sarnoff
and Rachel Gray Carpenter
Opening Day at Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club is the day our Club officially
declares the opening of the boating season. On Saturday, March 14, SMWYC will
welcome dignitaries, guests and
members to enjoy our Opening
Day ceremonies which will
include breakfast, music and
plenty of revelry.
Our Opening Day is shaping up
to be a very special event,
including dressing ships as the
ceremonies commence and
ending with our evening colors
ceremony that pays tribute to the
new waters our Club is sailing
into this year and beyond.
Ceremonies will begin at
9:00am with a welcoming of
guests and dignitaries. Our
welcome will be followed by complimentary Bloody Mary's, Morning Margaritas,
breakfast, champagne and music.
Opening Day is a great time to visit with members, meet new boating enthusiasts and
take pride in your Club!
We close the day with the evening color ceremony and canon salute at sunset.

Welcome one-and-all to Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club’s 2020 season! As
Commodore, I celebrate every time I am at our “Little Club with the Big Heart”, enjoying
conversations, meeting members and guests, helping to plan exciting events. When I’m
here, what I appreciate most Is Our “Clubness”! Our recent leaders have gone through
some challenging seas; and for their work, I am thankful! As we look to our present, our
juniors and the future, that will be up to us. In considering our Club, I think of pride. Not
pride as in superiority, but as in a pride of Lions. We come together, we work together,
we play together. We celebrate unity, we support our young and, as we look out over
Marina del Rey, we have a vast plane (our ocean) to maintain and explore. We are “Club
Pride”!
Club Pride, you might be wondering, what might that entail? It starts with volunteerism!
It starts with you! Celebrate, Cruise, Cleanup, Interact, Include, Invite, be Active, be
Authentic...in listening to you, the members, it’s what you want to be a part of.
On my OD duty one Sunday, I came ready to volunteer. I started a project, and sure
enough, when I finished, five more people were helping. I call it the “Huck Finn Effect”.
We had a great time, a great meal, a feeling of accomplishment, and enjoyed a job well
done. Maybe when you are the OD, you can pick a project, an event or an activity that
you want to share. Call, email, reach out to members, friends and new members. Invite
them down! Get them involved!
As you create more Club Pride, we will award “Lion’s Pride” stickers that can be
redeemed for gift cards and club vouchers. Once a quarter, we will have our Club
Quarterly Meetings to celebrate you and your contributions! Our first meeting is
scheduled for March 29, 2020.
Come celebrate your Club Pride at any or all of our coming events! Commemorate the
beginning of the boating season with us on Opening Day. Wear your green and have a
pint on Saint Patties Day. Help us plan our Cruising & Boating Season. Join us for dinner,
Trivia Night, Friday Live Music or Saturday Sunsets. How about a “pamper cruise”, group
sail, a spa and supper, or visit the Channel Islands? Have you ever participated in an Onthe-Water,
Easter Egg Hunt? Come out on April 11th and join the fun!
We have an amazing year ahead and a fantastic crew in all of you. This is YOUR CLUB
and now is YOUR TIME! Come share in who we are.Tell a friend! “Club Pride”!
See you all on Opening Day!

SHIP FOR OPENING DAY, MARCH 14, 2020
DRESS
By Commodore Wendy Sarnoff
and Rachel Gray Carpenter
There is no better indication of Opening Day than an anchorage full of boats adorned with signal flags!
As is the tradition, at 0800 hours, yacht clubs
all over the marina dress ship. Some even
begin the revelry early and begin dressing a
day or two before, especially those cruising in
from other marinas.
By hoisting signal flags and pennants,
boating enthusiasts provide a colorful
background for our ceremonies in
representation of their Club. Don't forget to fly
you Club Burgees too!
Flags can be arranged in any order but for
those with signal flags, the pattern begins
forward at the waterline in sequence.
In preparation, you can purchase flags here:
Alternatively, we have some flags available at
the SMWYC front office starting on February
23, 2020. If you have any questions, feel free
to call or email us and we will be happy to
assist. We look forward to seeing those flags
fly!
