SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday March 10 2020 3 News Bid for lookout over harbour • By Matt Slaughter A $370,000 lookout is being proposed for the car park opposite the Sign of the Bellbird in Kennedys Bush with a view of Lyttelton Harbour. The Summit Road Society is currently consulting the public on the proposal to decide on a finalised option which it will put forward to the city council for consideration. It has secured more than half of the funds needed to build the lookout through a combination of its own funds and a $150,000 grant from the city council. Options for gaining the rest of the funding are being investigated, including setting up a Givealittle page in the near future. Said the society’s secretary Marie Gray: “What we’re proposing is a low stone wall which is in the style of Harry Ell’s rest houses . . . some steps, a lookout platform, all complemented by native planting and also disability access around the side.” Harry Ell was a city councillor and member of Parliament in the early 1900s. He is famous for his advocacy for the Summit Rd and conservation work around the Port Hills. His grandson John Jameson founded the Summit Road Society in 1948 and the lookout will be named after Mr Jameson if it is approved. Mrs Gray said naming the lookout The John Jameson Lookout, will recognise the work he and Harry Ell did for the area around it. The society has outlined the proposal in its current form to the Spreydon- Cashmere Community Board and consultation with the community is ongoing. In Brief BOARD TO VARY LOCATIONS The Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board held its first-ever meeting at Cashmere Presbyterian Church, Macmillan Ave on March 3. Meetings have been held at Beckenham Service Centre for the last nine years. The location of meetings will now alternate between the service centre and various different spots throughout the Spreydon and Cashmere wards to encourage more community members to go along. NO STOPPING RESTRICTIONS No stopping restrictions will be installed in Halswell and Hornby. The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board approved installing yellow lines at Flagstaff Place, Halswell and Branston St, Hornby. The restrictions were placed in Flagstaff Place after a resident expressed concern vehicles were being parked at the end of the street which restricts the ability to turn around. SIGNAGE FOR PROJECTS The Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board has asked for information on work taking place in streets around south Christchurch. Its members have requested that the city council display more signage explaining the specifics of this work.
