Ford has reassured the Federal Government it is in Australia to stay
and may be able to offer jobs to some of the laid-off Holden workers.
"From a Ford Australia standpoint, we
have a great model line-up here," Ms
Hart said.
"We have one of the top-selling
vehicles in the Ford Ranger, that is
designed and engineered right here in
Australia and doing so well for us.
"We have a great range of products
that seem to really resonate with our
customers here, which is such an
important part for us."
But the director of the Australian
Industrial Transformation Institute at
Flinders University, John Spoehr, said
the Holden brand may be a casualty of
the Trump era.

Holden's US parent company
General Motors last month
announced it would retire the
iconic Holden brand and close down its
Australian operations, with about 600
employees set to lose their jobs.
Following the shock announcement,
Australian Federal Industry Minister
Karen Andrews called Ford's Australia
and New Zealand president and chief
executive, Kay Hart.
"She indicated very clearly to me that
Ford is as committed as ever to Australia
and that they continue to invest here,"
Ms Andrews said.
"She didn't give a never-ending
commitment and I would not expect
that from her.
"I asked that we kept in touch and she's
agreed to that."
Ms Andrews said Ford, formerly
Holden's major rival in Australia, also
appeared open to the possibility of
recruiting some of those facing job
losses at Holden.
Both Holden and Ford ended their
manufacturing operations in Australia
several years ago.
But Ford remains Australia's largest
automotive employer. It has more
than 2,000 engineers, designers and
technical and automotive specialists
working across four sites in Victoria.
The company said it had a further
$500 million worth of investment
planned in Australia for this year.
Ms Hart said the displaced Holden
workers may find opportunities at Ford.
"We have such a big design and
engineering team here in Australia," Ms
Hart said.
"We are hiring at the moment and I'm
sure that there's some great talent in
that Holden team.
"So we would definitely be looking, in
terms of if that skill set did fit with us."
Ms Hart said Ford also remained "firmly
committed" to its operations in Australia.
"The automotive industry is a global
industry that has tended to draw
the best skills and capabilities from
different parts of the world including
Australia," he said.
"I think US-based automotive companies
are under enormous pressure to deliver
to the US Government to re-shore jobs
to the US where they've got plants based
in other nations."
Ms Hart acknowledged that, as with the
Holden experience, long-term decisions
about the future of the company would
be made by Ford's parent company in
the United States.
"As a company, we will make that
decision in terms of what is right for
the corporation globally," she said.
"But at the moment, the Ford Motor
Company is extremely committed to
Australia."
Motoring journalist Toby Hagon put it
bluntly.
"As much as Ford is saying 'we are
here to stay', it was only a week ago
that Holden was saying the same
thing," he said.

Such is the demand for sport utility
vehicles, motor vehicle manufacturers have
recognised the need for those which have
genuine off-road capability.
Sure, there are many SUVs which are
capable off-the-seal, but there are some
that are better than most, those that are
based on ute platforms, ie: ladder chassis
and live rear axle.
The benefit of that type of construction
is not just high ground clearance, but
they also have the ability to put power to
ground through low ratio transfer cases and
lengthy rear axle articulation.
There are several ute-based SUVs in the
Kiwi market, and in terms of sales, Ford’s
Everest, Toyota’s Fortuner, Holden’s
Trailblazer and Mitsubishi’s Pajero Sport
are the shakers and movers.
This evaluation focuses on the latter, and
the Triton-based seven-seat SUV has just
had a bit a revamp, there are a host of
new features and an interior rejig so that
comfort levels are enhanced.
In terms of specifics, the exterior has had
some cosmetic changes up front, they
provide a solid, more powerful look. Inside
there are new display graphics, greater
storage facility, and soft touch padding has
been added to the extremities.
One of the most notable new features is the
powered tailgate which can be operated
by waving a foot under each side of the
rear bumper – this feature was great for
loading the hefty cricket gear bag I use for
coaching my year 7 Sydenham team.
Interestingly, the Pajero Sport is available
now in only one specification, and that
is high grade VRX. It is listed now at just
$58,990, which makes it a most appealing
purchase; not only do you get a lot of
vehicle for that price, it is finished with all
the goodies that characterise high-grade
Mitsubishi product.
It is swimming in features way too
numerous to mention, but to list just a few,
there are heated seats (full leather and
electrically adjustable), paddle shifters
and a clever new electronic remote
control device which will link to an owner’s
cellphone. It enables automatic opening of
the tailgate when approaching the vehicle.
Mechanically, little has changed with the
Pajero Sport other than a few electronic
tweaks to the driveline and four-wheeldrive
system. The Super-Select 4WD-II
system has long proven itself in Triton,
and I consider it one of the best in this
type of vehicle.
Under the bonnet sits a 2.4-litre, fourcylinder,
turbocharged diesel engine rated
by Mitsubishi at 135kW and 437Nm. It is a
real powerhouse and drives through the
sophistication of an eight-speed automatic
gearbox. The engine/gearbox combination
is rather special, especially so with the
number of ratios, there is almost seamless
gearing offering the best structures for
both off-road challenges and smooth
momentum for the everyday commute.
Of course, the Pajero Sport also gets a
seriously low ratio transfer system for when
those four-wheel-drive tracks beckon.
The test car was showing only 333km
when I picked it up from the dealership;
that being the case, I was reluctant to
take it off-road for fear of damage and/
or getting it too dirty. However, as good
fortune had it, I offered to take my son to
a rural property in Lansdowne Valley to
pick up some PlayStation games he had
purchased off Trade Me.
The house was located up a private
driveway which meandered for several

kilometers on a steep hill. The accessway
was mostly sealed bar for some deep ruts
and broken surfaces. The Pajero Sport
easily conquered the challenge in two
wheel-drive, but what was most impressive
was the way the suspension kept wheel
contact to ground, as well as offering high
interior comfort.
Steering feel was constantly
communicative, and turn in direct through
huge Toyo tyres (265/60 x 18in). On the
steep descent it was also good to know
that the brakes were up to task. That
journey was a good test for the Pajero
Sport, and even though the engine was
still quite tight, it made easy work of the
steep incline.
In terms of performance, against the
clock the Pajero Sport will accelerate to
100km/h from a standstill in 10.5sec, and is
comfortable with a 6.5sec highway overtake
(80km/h to 120km/h).
On the subject of figures, the Pajero Sport
is also listed with a 3100kg tow rating and
218mm ground clearance.
At highway speed it cruises comfortably
with little sound intrusion, there is just a
subdued diesel throb under load, but that is
no louder than any of its competition.
There’s been a lot of fresh product landing
from Mitsubishi in recent months, Triton,
ASX and Outlander have all had a refresh,
along with Pajero Sport.
There’s also genuine enthusiasm at the
local dealership, and with a comprehensive
and dynamic product range on the
showroom floor, it’s going to be a heady
time for those under the Mitsubishi
umbrella in this country.

Dealer Spotlight: Metro Cars
One of the few family business vehicle
dealers still operating, Metro Cars has
had a long association with vehicle
sales in Christchurch. Originally through
Colin Nichols, and now through his sons and
brothers, Chris and Phillip Nichols, Metro
Cars has been selling cars to Cantabrians
since 1972. With a few location shifts
throughout that time they have been at their
current site on Blenheim Road since 2000.
They have been well-known for providing
a carefree, easygoing atmosphere that has
seen them sell great cars to Canterbury
families for almost 50 years.
Colin Nichols came out to New Zealand
in 1959 and came from a vehicle sales
background in the UK. Along with his
brother, (who also ran a vehicle dealership –
Metro Car Sales), they have been immersed
in the Canterbury used car scene since the
1960s. Originally, there were dealerships
on the famous four corners of Durham
Street North and Moorhouse Avenue, which
used to have vehicle dealerships on most
of the corners, such as Orange Auto and
Robert Bruce Motors. Nowadays, it has
New World Supermarket and the recently
opened Spotlight located there. Colin’s sons
Chris and Phillip came aboard the family
business in the 1990s, Chris after a 3 year
stint working in Japan and Phillip after
completing University. Chris and Phillip
have spent most of their time based at the
Blenheim Road location.
The Blenheim Road site itself is a piece of
history. Originally a Shell service station, it
was the first Shell-owned station to close.
Due to the opening of Shell Curletts Road,
Shell felt it had a better location on the
Curletts Road/Main South Road corner and
shut the Blenheim Road station. There was
another Shell service station across the road
from them which has also closed down and
is now a WOF centre. Metro cars purchased
the current site from Shell as it was
decommissioned. They bought the site as
is, with the only addition being a workshop
on top of the old car wash site, which was
a concrete pad when they bought it. If you
look at the layout you can still picture where
the pumps were and the wide open spaces
of where the drinks fridge and counter were
positioned on the site.
Nowadays they are known for having a great
range of electric vehicles. Out of the 50
vehicles, half of their available stock is electric
or hybrid. Electric and Hybrid vehicles are
now a common and popular vehicle type in
the market place compared to when they sold
their first electric car in 2012, which was a
Gen 1 Nissan Leaf, imported as a used vehicle
from Japan. This first sale which was a bit of a
gamble, (it was amongst one of the first to be
imported to NZ), helping to pave the way for
what would be a more common occurrence
later on in the decade.
They have always been about providing the
best vehicles to buy for local Cantabrians in

Mike Pero’s Motorcycle Gallery
A stroll down memory lane
If you grew up in the 70s’, 80s’ or 90s’
then there’s a good chance you may
remember the modes of transport we
had. We’re talking well before Ubers,
before City Rail, SUVs’, EVs’ and even
before ‘Japanese (cars) imports’. It was
a time when cars seemed incredible
expensive and motorbikes, scooters and
step thru’s were a very sensible option
to get around town.
It’s not your imagination – yes, today
there’s only a small portion of the
motorcycles on the roads, compared
to the ‘heyday’ years of the 70s’ and
80s’. So where did all those motorcycles
go? Well, a ‘select’ few have ended up
at Mike Pero’s Motorcycle Gallery and
they’ve been presented in showroom
condition for one and all to see. “We
have a constant stream of visitors from
all corners of the world, explains its
founder, curator and marketing manager
– Mike Pero. “I’d like to say it’s an ‘older
male’ dominated demographic that
visits our gallery but it’s not. We have a
wide range from young woman in their
20s’ to some of our original bikers (and
bikies) now in their 80s! – last week we
had a visitor in his mid 90s’, reminiscing
about his bike days in the 1950s’.
Everyday people will walk in our door –
they could be from Kaiapoi, Qatar, Gore,
Greece, Cuba, Australia, the UK and
Singapore – over 70 different countries,
to date! Our visitors are from all walks of
life and, funnily enough, it seems to be
‘word of mouth’ and social media that
brings them in.
As the name might suggest we are a
classic Japanese motorcycle gallery.
We feature machines from the 70s’ to
the 90s’. We have as many two strokes
on display as we do four strokes and
they range from 50cc commuters to
the mighty 1100cc machines. Of course
all bikes fit into one of the four major
brands – Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and
Honda. Within these four brands we had
almost everything and today we have a
small example of each type on display.
Twins, triples, fours, turbos and even a
rotary (Suzuki RE5). You will generally
allow 30 minutes to wander but some
visitors will spend 2-3 minutes on their
favourite memories.
With more than 70 bikes it’s easy to
see how some enthusiasts will be in
their ‘dreamworld’ for an hour or so.
As well as the bikes there is barista

coffee; merchandise, videos (playing on
5 different screens) and magazines to
browse. We’ve done all we can to make
the gallery interesting. There’s always
questions and history to be explained
and my team of volunteers can always
‘spin a good yarn’ – these guys love
their bikes.
We’re open 10-4 Friday, Saturday
and Sundays. Admission is $15 for

Classic Japanese
Motorcycle Show
The CJMG was formed in 2007
after two riders on their restored
vintage Japanese motorcycles,
passed each other on the road one
weekend. Both stopped to say hello and
discuss their hobby and passion which
was finding, restoring and riding these
old bikes.
An advertisement was then placed in
a newspaper enquiring after interested
like-minded enthusiasts which was very
successful. The group now has many
members that meet socially and also
ride monthly. There are also a number
of members who regularly go off-road
to places such as Molesworth Station
and other more isolated backcountry
areas. Annual four or five day road
tours are also undertaken. There
are affiliate groups in Auckland and
Dunedin.
The group will be holding their fifth
Classic Japanese Motorcycle Show on
Sunday the 15th of March 2020 at the
Woolston Club Bowling Pavilion. The
motorcycles on show are beautifully
restored and in a lot of cases restored
to "factory new" using decades old
stock parts hunted out and found
around the world by way of the Internet.
These shows are well patronised as the
show is the only one in New Zealand
dedicated solely to vintage Japanese
motorcycles. Entries come from as
far away as Dunedin and visitors even
coming from Auckland. The motorcycles
are grouped under the four marques:
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.
Also grouped are 50-125 cc, Trail and
Barn Find. Trophies are awarded to
all groups and also Best in Show by
popular vote. Visitors will be able to
view such notable and ground breaking
motorcycles of the day such as the
Kawasaki Z1, Kawasaki H1 Mach III and
H2, Honda CB750 right down through to
the smaller models like the T125 Suzuki
Stinger and 50cc AC50 Suzuki Maverick
and Honda Cub.
The organisers and members of the
CJMG receive great feedback from
attendees. Many visitors relating that
they used to own a particular model
or that their brother had one, crashed
one or should never have sold it etc.
And they love to tell their motorcycling
stories to other interested parties.
These old motorbikes are a key for a
lot of people that unlocks a flood of
memories, particularly of their free and
happy younger days and their love of
Japanese motorcycles.
Profits from this show and previous
shows have been donated to charities.
