Elevating the Standards of Lift and Elevator Industry

The 10 Most Trusted Lift & Elevator Solution Providers

Dynamically Uplifting

the Indian Lifts and

Elevators Space

echnology is speaking a subtle

Tlanguage, the language of

‘innovation’. This language is

revolutionizing the way our world

works today. Daily lives of people are

changing rapidly and the day-to-day

activities are getting simplified with just

the touch of a button. May it be a

smartphone, a smartwatch, a smart

remote, or any other smart device for

that matter. Innovation in technology is

on the verge of discovering new

horizons making our lives better.

As technology is influencing our lives

making it simpler on a personal level,

the lifts & elevator space of India is also

experiencing the changes due to

technological advancements in its

widely growing business paradigm. The

dynamics of the said industry is proving

to be beneficial for a lot of parties

involved in the business, from its

manufacturers to the other solution

providers and ancillaries. Not just the

service providers, but the end-users,

that is the customers of these moving

machines are also benefiting greatly.

Due to the modern applications of the

latest technology and simplified

solutions integrated into the lifts and

elevators, the final users are having ease

in moving people and things in a muchstreamlined

manner.

On the commercial level, modern

elevator solutions are enabling ease in

the transportation of materials,

equipment, and heavy machinery, along

with vertical and horizontal

development. The passenger lift

segment is also looking bright as the

vertical development particularly has

been experiencing exponential growth

in its demand. As more and more living

spaces and office spaces are capturing

the real estate market in India, the

requirement of lifts has gone up

multifold.

Statistically speaking, in India, the

demand for elevators is on the verge of

crossing 75,000 units by 2020. In the

global market, such demand has

positioned the country in second place

in terms of overall demand. The key

growth triggers for the industry are

considered to be Urbanization which

includes high-rise buildings,

infrastructure projects, affordable

housing, and adding to all these factors

is the real estate reforms. For tapping

into this lucrative market, the lifts and

elevator manufacturers need to come up

with affordable solutions and models to

meet the customer requirements with

respect to the price-sensitive segments

of the market. According to an

independent report, the market size of

Indian lifts, elevators, and escalators is

projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1%

in the timeline from 2017-2023.

When it comes to the escalator segment,

the majority of the market installations

are witnessed in sectors like hospitality,

transportation, retail, and residential. In

this segment, the market leader has

been ‘moving stairs’ for quite some

time, but now rapidly growing in

popularity is the ‘walkaway’ subsegment.

These walkaways are mostly

installed at airports and shopping

centers. Amongst all the applications,

the escalators have captured the largest

share in the commercial arena

considering the overall Indian elevators

and escalators market.

This ardent and rapid growth in the lifts

and elevators industry along with the

infrastructural development that India is

moving forward to is deduced to

increase in the near future. With an aim

to provide optimum moving solutions,

there are some key players in the

market that are revolutionizing the

sector. Insights Success, in this month’s

of the companies that are market

Elevating the Standards of

Lift and Elevator Industry

Cover

Story

According to market reports,India’s marketplace for

elevators and escalators is expected to reach $2

billion by 2023.Besides the urbanization, the

enactment of the Real Estate (Regulation and

Development) Act, 2016 (RERA), a growing number of

high-rise residential and commercial buildings across the

country have contributed to this rise. In addition,

government initiatives such as the Smart Cities Mission and

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) and the increasingly

adoption of smart, efficient, and environmental-friendly

elevators are expected to contribute to the growth of the

Indian lift and elevator market during the forecast period.

Further more, the increasing demand for Automatic Rescue

Device elevators is expected to fuel the market for

domestic elevators in the coming years.

This advancement and development in the lift and elevator

industry would have never been feasible without the

contribution of dominant industry players. Among them,

Insights Success feels privileged to bring forth a tale of one

such player, which came into operation when the industry

and nation’s people needed it severely. We are talking about

POWERCAB, an industry-leading firm, which is a

prominent name when it comes to

offering adequate lifts and elevator

services in India. Established in the

year 1991 with headquarters in West

Bengal, the firm has been serving the

nation for 29 years. With over 5556

elevators currently running, the pioneer

has installed different types of

elevators in the major states of India

including West Bengal, Jharkhand,

Orissa, Tripura, Assam, etc. as well as

in some of the major cities such as

Ranchi, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Puri,

Siliguri,Alipurduar, Jamshedpur,

Agartala,Seuri,Rampurhat (Tarapith),

and many other locations including

some of the SAARC countries (for

example, Bhutan, Nepal etc)

On Right Time

According to the firm, during the initial

days of establishment, the lift and

elevator industry was in the hands of

multinational developer companies.

The services were good enough, but

the corporations used to charge a hefty

sum for the services. Consequently,

with the service charges being high, the

accommodation of new homes and flats

became unbearable for common

people. The establishment of Powercab

came into being to provide for these

common people. Founder and

Chairman, Ashis Sen introduced the

firm with the belief to serve with the

commitment of supplying lift and

elevator services at a reasonable and

bearable price for society. He asserts,

“At that time, due to the bad economic

condition of India and people

neglecting to purchase properties,

culminated in the real estate business

performing inadequately and

simultaneously, the lift industry being

affected badly. We just realized; it was

time for us to step in and provide for

the people in need.” Being a welltrained

technical person with having

wide knowledge in the electricals and

electronics field, Ashis set up his mind

to do something right by society.

Uplifting the Society

Twenty-nine years ago, POWERCAB

began with the most conventional

single-speed lift. However, the vision

was to go beyond and bring a modern

trend in the industry. Subsequently, the

organization quickly hired a group of

Engineers in Research and

Development for product development.

POWERCAB’s this zest to modernize

lift and elevator segment has resulted

in its present position of being a market

leader. With its massive efforts, today

the firm has enabled itself to build

high-speed lifts with all the latest

features. Presently, the firm provides

high-end lift and elevators including

Manual Collapsible Door Elevator,

Manual Sliding Door Elevator, Manual

Swing Door Elevator, Manual

Telescopic Door Elevator, Center

Opening Auto Door Elevator, Scenic

Elevator, and Escalators.

Since inception, POWERCAB has

provided lift and elevator services at

reasonable prices with quality, prompt

deliveries, and manageable service

rate. “This affected the business of

other lift companies and as such, they

tried to damage our company’s

reputation. However, we were very

strict about our commitment to the

clients in regard to delivery and

completion we were able to overcome

all this hindrance.” says Ashis. The

firm’s employed experts and

experienced Engineers provide distinct

solutions to diverse lift owners on their

request. Lifts under POWERCAB’s

maintenance have zero-to-none

breakdowns and the firm claims to

respond to calls within 5 pm and the

rest in early hours the next day.

“Our vision

is

nothing

but to

provide

our

customer

a better

care

for

a better

business”

“We are

an expert

in the

elevator

business, and

we know

better

care of

elevators”

Presently, the company is said to

keeping its keen eyes on the industry

and has set up a team of Engineers to

look out for the latest market trends

and innovations to be in line with all

big and multinational companies.

Stepping into the Clients’ Shoes

Recognizing the needs of clients and

competitive market, POWERCAB

never fails to offer the best of services

at acceptable prices when compared to

other companies. This is accompanied

by early deliveries and prompt

fulfillment of the client's requirements

and a promise of advanced backup

assistance as and when requested by

the client.

POWERCAB being a people-centric

firm has been concentrating on quantity

and accordingly regulating nominal

profits. This benefits the company to

obtain the largest AMC coverage every

year. Ashis states, “Due to this AMC

coverage, we have a substantial

number of maintenance clients for our

own products, however, we never

maintain other brand elevators.” He

continued, “POWERCAB is happy with

POWERCAB USERS. The essence of

the elevator business is to achieve a

maximum number of maintenances

which generates maximum revenues

per month, which is a great support to

run the business smoothly with all

overhead expenses.” On the other

hand, the profits brought about from

the formation of new lifts are added to

the capital every year, which according

to the firm, are utilized to finance new

productions.

Industry Acknowledgements

POWERCAB, an ISO 9001:2015

accredited firm, has received numerous

awards from organizations such as the

Institute of Economic Studies and other

esteemed bodies. Some of the awards

earned by POWERCAB include the

product in the metro city Kolkata; Excellency award in the year

1999-towards designing and production; Gold Medal award in the

year 2001-towards services and production; and Excellence award

for extra ordinary achievements in India’s Development.

Shaping the Industry

The company will continue to deliver the best of lifts and elevator

service and uplift the society. Talking about future endeavors,Ashis

told us that the firm will maintain International Standards of

products and keep up with its competitive price and solid support of

maintenance.

With a visionary mindset and perceiving the industry needs and

setting up milestones, the firm targets to achieve:

• Center opening doors and other elevator/escalator spares, and

manufacturing all the items and transactspares parts to other local

companies of nearby states with a much-reduced price in

comparison to the suppliers of Ahmadabad, Mumbai, Pune, etc.

• Plans to install more sophisticated machinery at the earliest by

December 2019 for mass production and quality of the products,

matching that of Multinational companies

• Revamped elevator cabins styles with more attractive designs and

features compared to multinational companies

• Addition of features to the microprocessors control panel for easy

location of faults and better performance

• Training technical staff everyday by well experienced and efficient

engineers

• Improvement of marketing network bythe establishment of

franchisee within and outside the states in eastern part of India

• A plan to open four showrooms for elevator products like car

dealers, etc. by 2020 in Kolkata

• Plans for change in shift timings for 24hrs maintenance network

• Reducing AMC costs compare to multinationals

Passing the Path of Excellence

Revealing the secret mantra, Ashis guides upcoming young

entrepreneurs by stating, “Have at least 8/10 years solid technical

experience in this field and capable to develop the product time to

time as per market demand with a sophisticated production unit

equipped with modern automated machine, etc. and solid marketing

network and solid support of maintenance.” Not only this, but a

whole lot of entrepreneurship, commitment, and responsibilities

towards society can be learned from Ashis and POWERCAB.

dynamic way. Its innovative solutions

Read how Hydro Fabs is creating a

benchmark in the lifts & elevators

space of the country.

“For us, Quality means - Safety,

Energy-Efficiency, Durability, and

Smooth Transportation”

1. Brief us about your company.

What kind of Lift & Elevator

Solutions/Services/Products are

offered by your company at par with

the current industry standards?

Hydro Fabs is a 2year old company

based in Bangalore,

Ans: We manufacture, export and

supply a broad range of Hydraulic

Lifts. Ever since our inception in the

year 1995, the company has grown

consistently and today we are a 3

million dollar enterprise. Our hydraulic

lifts are suitable for all types of heavy

material handling requirements.

Our company keeps pace with the

latest technology and world-class

infrastructure. We are constantly

looking at expanding our production

facility in order to cater to the growing

demands of the domestic as well as

international market. Currently, our

production facility is spread across an

area of 40,000 square feet. We follow

stringent quality control measures at

every stage of production. Our entire

production unit is divided into various

departments and is managed by a team

of 100 plus employees. We have

departments like administration,

marketing, purchase, production,

accounts, human resource, and aftersales

service.

Our lifts are used in automobile

showrooms, garages, food processing

industries, hotels, hospitals, parking

systems, and logistics.

Our Main Products are:

1. Hydraulic Scissors Lifts

2. Hydraulic Goods Lifts

3. Hydraulic Car/Bike Lifts

4. Hydraulic Car/Bike Elevators

2) Brief us about the featured

person(s) or the company’s

Founder/CEO.

Ans: In 1995, two partners met with a

vision of making cargo transportation

simple and efficient, that’s how Hydro

Fabs was born. Twenty-Five years

later, we are still driven by the most

exacting standards, constantly

encouraging our designers to challenge

the constraints of the modern world

and produce ideas that others would

deem impossible. It is this drive and

devotion that has led Hydro Fabs to be

widely acknowledged as ‘The Best

Cargo Lift Manufactures’

Salim Chinwala & Mustafa Metawala

(Founders - Hydro Fabs)

The promoters are from a very humble

background. Around 30 years ago, they

themselves worked day and night and

used hammer and chisel to cut steel.

They understand the problems faced by

different business organizations, hence

you can depend on them for quality

product and swift after-sales service.

3) Describe the current scenario of

the Lift & Elevator Solution

Industry, in your opinion.

Ans: The current scenario of Lifts and

Elevators with reference to specifically

the ones that are made for goods

transportation seem to be at an all-time

high. Since India is a rapidly

developing country, there seems to be

no horizontal space for builders and

architects to design factories,

showrooms, industries, etc. The only

choice left for people is to have more

vertical space and that’s where we

come into the picture. We provide

solutions for transporting goods from

one floor to the other with no

restriction in terms of size, height,

capacity, and safety. And we also

provide complete customized solutions

so we can cater to the masses and

produce equipment suitable

specifically for a client.

4) What motivated you to become a

Lift & Elevator Solution Provider?

Ans: The inspiration to become a Lift

& Elevator Solution provider comes

from our past when we used to be

small manufactures of trolleys and the

other small material handling

equipment. We decided to do research

on the then market situation (1994-95),

and we found that there were no local

manufacturers providing customized

lifting solutions. That’s when we did

our study and now we are driven by

our mission that is - “To manufacture

the best quality lifting solution and

provide uncompromised service and to

simplify the material handling process

for our clients.”

5) Which strategies do you follow to

remain competitive with

continuously evolving technologies

and trends? How are you shaping

the company to stay unique?

Ans: We have a highly proficient and

adept R&D department that constantly

updates any new technology that

comes into the scenario and provides

training to our employees regarding the

same. We also take part in various

exhibitions which help us to increase

our knowledge about the new

technologies and trends that come into

the market. The only recipe for staying

relevant and competent in this highly

December 2019| 15

competitive market is to provide high quality and give

uncompromised service, and we follow both of these

religiously. We are and will always remain unique

because no two of our products are the same. The amount

of customization we can offer is incomparable and it will

always keep us one step ahead of our competitors.

6) Where is your company going? What benefit your

customers are getting from your company in this

competitive world?

Ans: Our company is always looking to expand both

physically and technologically. We are constantly looking

at expanding our production facility in order to cater to

the growing demands of the domestic as well as

international market.

Our company has always had a client-centric approach,

our customers know that if they need something

customized and reliable they can depend on us. Certain

equipment that we have made is 1st to the market and we

are constantly updating ourselves to find better ways to

utilize space and help our clients be more efficient in

terms of material handling. We help our customers find

solutions when most people would deem it impossible.

7) Can you brief us about the company’s vision for the

future?

Ans: We as a company have always had the thought of

growing with our clients, we provide solutions to make

your process more efficient and at the same time you help

us grow. In the future, we will be looking to improve our

quality to the highest degree and be known as the most

reliable Goods Lift/Car Lift and Elevator products &

services providers in the world.

smooth functioning. Timely servicing

and maintenance of the elevators is

necessary to avoid any uncertainties or

accidents in day to day routine.

There are various types of elevators or

lifts available in the market with different

designs and usage which helps the

people to manage their activities. All of

this without putting much effort which

ultimately saves their time and energy.

Freight Elevator 1

Below is a summary of the few elevators

and its usage accordingly:

• Passenger Elevators: Passenger

elevators are designed to move a

person or number of persons (between

the assigned capacity) from one floor

of the building to the other floor.

Nowadays we find many multi-storey

buildings with huge heights. Elevators

are the source that makes the day to

day routine of the people easy and

also saves the time and energy

required for climbing up through the stairs. Passenger

elevators include residential elevators which assists in

carrying from one person to several people. Wheelchair

elevators or platform elevators are typically designed to

move a person having a disability from one floor to

another. There are lifts also known as Express Elevators

which do not operate for each floor but it operates from

ground floor to sky lobby to a range of floors, skipping

the floors in between.

• Freight Elevators: Freight Elevators are generally

designed to carry heavy materials and equipment

from one floor to another floor of a multi-story

building. It has a huge capacity which makes it easy

for transportation of heavy materials. Passenger

lifting through these elevators is generally prohibited

as they are designed for lifting of heavy materials.

Electric freight elevators are more energy-efficient

than the hydraulic freight elevator.

• Sidewalk Elevators: Sidewalk elevator is the type of

freight elevator that is often seen outside the building.

It is used to transport the material between the

basement and the ground floor area.

• Stage Elevators or Orchestra Elevators: Stage

elevators are specialized elevators that are generally

powered by hydraulic which helps in raising and

lowering the entire section of the stage. Orchestra

Elevators are powerful enough to raise and lower the

entire orchestra set up.

Stage Elevators

• Vehicle Elevators: Vehicle Elevators has the huge

capacity of moving the vehicle or car into the parking

garage or say manufacturer storage.

Earlier, the buildings used to have less storeys or floors,

likely upto 6 or 7 floors maximum.

Passenger Elevator

Nowadays, due to modernization, it is observed that the

buildings with more than 10 floors in the urban areas

and metro cities have increased the standard of living of

the people. A person buying a house has his/her

preference towards the higher floor which provides him

the top view of the city and other relevant factors also

influence their purchase decision. This has simply

become easy due to the use of elevators which has put

an addition to the comfort while making it a solution

that is energy efficient and beneficial for people in a lot

of ways.

have changed due to technology. It has

helped human beings prosper in many ways.

The growth of a business or an economy as a

whole is considerable after the advancement in

technology. It has made numerous things digital

and easy to access. Many people are dependent

on technological applications these days. It has

a large impact on human life.

Technology has its influence on various

industries. And one such industry is the

elevator industry. Since 2017, the elevator

26

Elevating Lifestyle

industry has been busy growing and

transforming itself. The elevator industry

is gearing up to step up a notch.

Elevators are said to be the most

frequently used mode of transport for

moving inside buildings in the world.

Innovations and Technological

Advancements

A modern day elevator consists of a cab

or car mounted on a platform within an

enclosed space called a shaft or

sometimes a ‘hoistway’. In the past,

elevator drive mechanisms were

powered by the steam and water

hydraulic pistons or by hand. A vast

transformation can be seen in the design,

working, structure etc of the elevator

now. Here are some of the technological

advancement stories of the recent past:

Smart Elevators: As skyscrapers

continue to rise to dizzy heights, elevator

manufacturers made adjustments in order

to safely and quickly transport the

passenger. Smart elevators are among the

new wave of advancement. These

elevators use smart technology to create

more efficient ways in transporting

passengers, especially during rush hours

in the office buildings. They can also be

programmed to work differently at

different times of the day and according

to the traveling habits of the passengers.

Internet of Things: Internet connected

elevators are the commonplace. These

elevators work based on sensors. The

sensor gathers data about usage and

other factors, to analyze the wear and

December 2019| 27

tear on the parts and machinery of the elevator. This

information is retained in the cloud-based platform to

predict when maintenance will be needed. This allows

technicians to predict future problems and solve them

before they become cumbersome. These devices are

making maintenance easier, cheaper and less labour

oriented.

Virtual Reality Diagnosis: There are thousands of

configurations and millions of parts in the elevators,

which make a repair difficult to find. However, with

augmented reality, technicians can dig into the problems

on site or even before getting to the site. Mechanics can

diagnose a problem without risking their lives by

dangling from a lift shaft or climbing several floors. The

technician simply have to put on the glasses and use

hand motions to explore the machine and its parts in

more depth. The view on the headset can be widened

allowing the use to do virtual walk throughs to look for

exact places that require repairs.

Awaited Advancements in the Industry

A leading company in the industry is working on a new

technology which intends to make an elevator

independent. The technology is trying to eliminate the

use of cables in elevators, allowing it to travel vertically

and horizontally through shaft loops within the building.

Some elevators are also being designed to give real-time

insights to building owners wherever they are. This

could help them manage and operate the building more

efficiently.

Another aspect being considered is to make elevators

with a sleep mode. There are certain hours in a day

where the elevator traffic is not much. During these

timeframes some elevators could be put to sleep. This

could save energy and reduce the electricity expenses of

the building.

Emergency elevators are awaited in the near future.

Elevators are said to be avoided during any mishap. The

occupants are in huge masses and it becomes difficult to

evacuate. Such elevators unlock a stunning amount of

potential safety improvements for buildings. The existing

elevators could be upgraded with the new codes to fit the

emergency evacuation system also.

There are major innovations and advancements

happening in the industry. This has changed the overall

face of the elevator industry. It has made vertical

transport easy and smart in the past few years. It is an

exciting time for the elevator industry. The next wave of

emerging technological advancements in the industry

will bring a substantial change to the elevator game.

Every year is getting bigger and better. As the

technology evolves, the elevators, their maintenance,

their upgradation etc. will also evolve simultaneously.

Solution Providers

The Indian government’s Smart

City initiative is on the path of

fueling the need for smart and

efficient technologies to support urban

growth. Urbanization drives an

increased need for housing, and the

elevator industry plays an important

role in supporting its growth. Future

cities and developing economies hold a

lot of potential for infrastructure

growth. Therefore, urbanization is a

major driver for the elevator segment

in India. Approximately 340 million

people, or 30 percent of the country’s

population, currently live in cities.

According to a recent independent

report, by 2030 it is expected that cities

will house 590 million people or 40

percent of the population and that India

will have 68 cities with populations of

more than 1 million.

Taking a cue from the numbers and

statistics mentioned above, Otis

Elevator Company is one of the

world’s leading elevators, escalators

and moving walkaways solution

provider is all set to retain its current

mantle. It moves almost 2 billion

people a day. It maintains more than 2

million elevators and escalators around

the world. The company has one of the

industry’s largest service portfolios.

Founded by Elisha Otis in 1852, the

firm is headquartered in Connecticut,

USA. Otis has its elevators installed

successfully in some of the world’s

most renowned structures, such as the

Eiffel Tower, Empire Estate Building,

Petronas Twin Towers, and the Burj

Khalifa also.

In 1892, Otis India had installed the

nation’s primary functional elevator in

Raj Bhawan, Kolkata. The company’s

incorporation year in the country was

1953. It operates via various regional

offices throughout the nation in cities

like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru,

Kolkata, and Pune. Otis India has a

service network that excels at

providing 24/7 service and support in

major metropolitan areas. Otis India’s

services portfolio includes 80 different

channels of service centers covering

cities which are more than 300 in

number. The company has the largest

maintenance base in India.

Building Possibilities

There are a lot of people migrating

towards cities and the urban populace

is increasing day by day. So, vertical

expansion has become one of the go-to

solutions for tackling the issue of

living spaces especially the lack of

horizontal one. “At Otis, we always

have an eye on introducing technology

that meets the needs of our customers;

many of whom are interested in saving

space and time,” conveys the team of

Otis India. The timing is of utmost

importance for the company due to the

rapid urbanization taking place. This

entitles the opportunity that Otis has

for improving the passenger experience

in terms of reducing the average

waiting time. Otis realizes that there is

a need to deliver a faster response time

enabling efficient passenger journey

which has become very critical

nowadays. The team at Otis states,“We

address and balance these two

components through CompassPlus

destination dispatching to optimize

time to destination and support more

predictable waiting times.”

Using patented Otis technology, the

system constantly evaluates real-time

passenger traffic to improve flow and

travel time in busy mid-and high-rise

buildings. Its functionality is subtle and

instead of using standard hall calls

buttons, passengers get to enter their

specific floor in the Compass fixture.

The system identifies the floor on

which a particular passenger wants to

travel to and assigns passengers with

similar travel patterns or the ones who

are traveling to nearby floors, the same

car. This process minimizes the

number of stops per trip while

significantly reducing car-crowding

along with passenger wait and travel

time.

Exclusive Product Line

There are two products of Otis that are

proven to be differential in the

elevators market, Skyrise®, and

Skybuild. The SkyRise® system is

designed for the world’s tallest

buildings, which use the SkyMotion

machine. It is considered among the

30

December 2019|

most energy-efficient systems on the planet. The system’s light

weight makes it easy to install and its smaller footprint saves

building space. The SkyBuild elevator helps the crews and

materials get transported hassle-free & where they need to be

quickly and safely, without a crane or an external lift. Also, it

avoids the risks involved with exposure to any type of weather.

SkyBuild’s unique hydraulic piston system enables it to climb

one floor at a time as the building rises. Each climb can be

accomplished between shifts, reducing the impact on operations.

Once construction is complete, SkyBuild goes directly into

service as a SkyRise elevator. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai uses

Otis SkyRise elevators, which travel at 10 meters per second.

Also, Otis has introduced environmentally responsible elevators

called Otis Gen2 elevator with ReGen drive that captures

the energy that would otherwise be wasted and feeds it back into

the building’s power grid. As growth is fast-paced in cities, there

is a huge focus on sustainable solutions. So, when the Gen2

elevator and ReGen drive is combined, it reduces the energy

consumption by up to 75 percent under normal operating

conditions when compared to conventional systems with nonregenerative

drives.
