A Note
from the editor
Hello Spring – I’ve been waiting for your
arrival like a lovelorn maiden, excitedly
hopping out of bed to look out the window
for signs of new life and sunny skies. I
know that in recent years April weather has
Avid readers might remember reading
about my new year’s pledge in a past
issue – to walk, run or cycle 5km every
day of 2020. Not having a bike, or access
to a stationary one continues to be slightly
problematic, but apart from a particularly
grim night during a storm (I can’t remember
which given name, we’ve had so many of
late), I’ve done it! I’m not sure yet if I’m fitter
or slimmer, but I’ve really enjoyed carving
little moments out of my usually hectic day
to go for a head-clearing walk. It’s never
too late to start!
We catch up with
James Martin
on Easter, with cracking pressies and some
egg-cellent recipes – hey, if you’re running
five kilometres a day, you go ahead and
enjoy that hot cross bun pudding! There’s
also lots to look forward to in the calendar,
Our chef this issue is James Martin, proud
crystals sparkle, and eggs glow.
The fairies in Gough’s Cave are friends with
the Easter bunny and often help hide eggs
for all the boys and girls to find. But there’s
a problem, the mischievous troll has hidden
the fairies’ glowing eggs. If they can’t find
their precious eggs in time, then they can’t
help. Luckily, the troll is sleeping so it’s your
chance to hunt for them.
On your travels, you’ll meet seven guardian
fairies who hold clues to figure out what’s
special about the eggs. Can you get past the
troll to find the eggs? Will you discover why
the eggs are so important? If you do, you
may receive a treat as a thank you.
on FOOD, FESTIVALS
AND ALL-FEMALE
BANDS...
We speak to singer/
songwritter KT
Tunstall ahead of her
appearance at The Bath
Festival Finale Weekend
on 23rd May...
You’re currently on a tour of Europe
and then the States and Canada. Is it
true you take a camping stove with you
so you can eat healthy?
Yes! I radically changed my diet a few
years ago, and it’s made a huge positive
difference regarding keeping myself at
peak health while on the road. But it does
mean I prefer to cook my own fresh food,
so rather than a gas stove (definitely
more likely to set the tour bus on fire) I
have a little travel electric hob and oven
called ‘Jon Bon Stovi’ who comes on
tour with me. I go online on Instagram
Live and cook really simple, healthy
meals with fans before the gig - it’s called
KT’s Kitchen and its the most ridiculous
and profane cooking show you will ever
watch.
How do you write new songs? Are
you scribbling lyrics in a notebook,
humming melodies into your phone or
noodling on your guitar?
All of the above! It has always been hard
to carve out time to dedicate to writing.
For me, it takes clearing out my brain
of anything else, and I find now that the
best way to do that is to take an actual
writing trip where I have a certain number
of days and proper solitude to get the
work done. On KIN (my last album), I
holed up in a beautiful house in Taos,
New Mexico, built a fire every day and
wrote almost half the album in a week.
I’ve kept a journal since I was young, and
that’s always been a really key part of
my process. And iPhone voice notes are
invaluable, I would have lost a lot of ideas
without them.
And can you remember the first song
you wrote and how old you were?
My first song was called ‘Only You’. I was
about 13, and obsessed with Dynasty
the TV show, and the song was about
getting cheated on, which I knew nothing
about thankfully, so it was entirely based
on characters who I think were called
Claudia and Myles from the show. It still
holds up! I’ve definitely written worse
ones than that.
We’re really looking forward to you
playing at the open-air Bath Festival
Finale Weekend in May. What makes a
festival crowd special for you?
Thank you, me too! Festival season is my
favourite time of the year. I feel like I was
born to play them. I feel so at home in
that environment, and being a musician
and a nature freak, it’s my dream setting.
I love it especially because there is a
real openness and good-heartedness
amongst the crowd at festivals. We drop
our guards, talk to strangers, dance like
crazy, and I just love being in that energy.
Your mother and brother and his family
live in Bath. What do you like doing
when you come to the west country?
And will your family be at the Bath gig?
They will absolutely be there, it’s nice
to be playing their back yard. The west
country is such a special part of the UK,
I’ve always loved it; the stone circles,
the ancient hillside art, the beautiful
architecture and the landscape. But Bath
in particular has AMAZING shopping!!
You’re a very positive role model for
girls and young women. Do you think
young women have it tougher than
they did a generation ago? And can we
expect to see an all female KT Tunstall
band on stage in Bath?
Thank you, that is becoming an
increasingly important part of my job. It’s
pretty shocking still seeing such a stark
gender disparity even now in 2020. It’s
time we all pushed harder to change it
I believe it is a deep, systemic issue
that starts right from the seeds of
music creation where girls are not being
supported or considered (or considering
getting into it), and the end result is
this crazy imbalance. So being a visible
role model for young girls I feel is really
needed. I’ve beyond loved playing with
an all-female band and seeing kids and
adults light up at the sight of us rocking
out, realising they’ve never seen an all
female band before, is very powerful.
I will be taking to the stage solo in Bath,
which definitely also has its own power!
KT Tunstall is playing at The Bath Festival
Finale Weekend on Saturday 23 May as
part of The Bath Festival which runs from
Friday 15 May to Sunday 24 May. Tickets
are on sale now: bathfestivals.org.uk/
DOWN
UNDER
Two Longleat koala keepers have returned
from a support mission to help with
the wildlife emergency following the
devastating Australian bushfires...
Longleat is the only zoological collection
in Europe to look after southern koalas,
and is part of a long-term partnership
with the South Australia Government
and Cleland Wildlife Park, in the
Adelaide Hills, to support research and
conservation programmes for wild koalas.
Specialist koala keepers Graeme Dick
and James Dennis flew out after South
Australian partners confirmed and extra
experienced, hands-on practical help with
the support effort would be beneficial
given the scale of the situation.
“We were very pleased to have both
Graeme and James come out and help
us with the recovery process,” said Chris
Daniel, Director of Cleland Wildlife Park.
“They have been actively involved
in a range of activities to rescue and
rehabilitate koalas, wombats, echidnas
and other wildlife,” he added.
During their two-week trip Graeme and
James helped rescue koalas, travelled
to Kangaroo Island to monitor and treat
surviving populations, assisted with work
at Minton Farm Rescue and looked after
koala burn victims at Cleland wildlife
park.
“It’s been a hugely emotional experience
for James and myself, but to have the
opportunity to lend a hand and put the
skills we have learned into practice has
been incredible,” said Graeme.
“The teams on the ground have lived
through an absolute nightmare and
now, with the fires finally dying out,
the challenge is to start re-growing the
eucalyptus tree, to get the affected
areas re-wilded and to put all our efforts
into keeping the surviving populations
safe and healthy so they can begin to
recover,” he added.
In addition to practical help and support
with the rescue programme, Longleat
have donated AUS$ 25,000 to help
fund work being undertaken by SAVEM
(South Australian Veterinary Emergency
Management), Minton Farm Rescue and
Manfred Heide Wombat Rescue.
Longleat also set up a Justgiving page to
assist with the recovery programme and
to date it has raised more than £12,000.
The team were flown out free of
charge by Singapore Airlines, who are
official supporters of the Longleat and
International Koala Centre of Excellence
(IKCE) partnership.
“The public response to the appeal has
been simply astonishing and we cannot
express how grateful both we and our
colleagues out in Australia are,” said
Graeme.
“The situation remains extremely serious
but absolutely every penny people have
donated is going direct to the teams on
the ground and it’s having a massively
beneficial effect.
“It is quite literally saving the lives of
koalas, wombats, echidnas and a host
of other unique Australian wildlife,” he
added.
Boarding schools offer unrivalled
opportunities for learning
State and independent schools understand
that a good education is a powerful tool
and all educators need to encourage a
passion for learning. We all undertake to
join the dots together to give our pupils the
best chance but if all schools are ultimately
striving for the same outcome, does a full
boarding school environment have the
edge?
Boarding schools have time to prepare a
young mind, academically and pastorally.
Longer days and weekends provide the
opportunity for a whole host of extra
experiences and support, leading to a wellrounded
individual.
Encouragement and facilitation begin in
the House environment. At Sherborne
the first wave of support comes from the
House Team led by the Housemaster.
Tutors have time with their tutees
discussing academic progress and pastoral
concerns, each week. This regular contact
and rounded view of each boy builds a
strong relationship to ensure all pupils are
motivated and engaged.
Matrons play an integral part within
boarding schools. Any misconceptions
by Sherborne boys that matrons will tidy
their rooms are quickly dispelled and
self-sufficiency, an important life skill, is
developed! Our matrons are held close
to the hearts of the boys and it is a very
special relationship where these key
stalwarts of the School have the medical,
emotional and organisational needs of the
boys at the forefront of their minds.
Academic progress is important. The nature
of full boarding brings a longer school day
and departments are open beyond the
working day. Boys can access support but
there are also opportunities for enrichment
with boarding schools offering an unrivalled
range of co-curricular clubs supplementing
the more traditional activities. Maybe full
boarding offers ‘an educational experience
with no limits’.
The most recent example at Sherborne
is a Calligraphy club run by new Head of
Computer Science Dr Wild alongside some
popular long-standing clubs including Fives,
Fly Fishing, Sailing and Debating! Boys also
enjoy a close relationship with Sherborne
Girls with whom joint activities, subjects and
social opportunities are well established.
Boarding schools offer the chance to
separate home life in the boarding house
from study time. Our newly refurbished
School Library offers a wonderful setting
and with notable alumni including Alan
Turing, Hugh Bonneville, Chris Martin and
Jeremy Irons there is a distinct sense of
purpose at the School. The friendly team of
library staff is on hand to help with research
and study skills and boys (and staff) are
often found having a little bit of quiet time.
Integral values at Sherborne encourage
boys to be respectful, confident,
passionate, independent and curious, while
PSHE and School Assemblies promote
a culture of kindness and compassion.
Mentors, predominately Sixth Form, offer
an alternative listening service or extra
academic support. This in turn strengthens
the community in House and takes the
‘Sherborne Spirit’ into life beyond the
School.
So do boarding schools have the edge over
their day counterparts? Well, all schools
work incredibly hard to support their pupils
academically and pastorally, teachers
are passionate about their subjects
and institutions aspire to prepare pupils
effectively for ‘the world beyond’.
We believe full boarding at Sherborne
works, providing an outstanding
educational experience for our boys. And
we hope that when boys leave Sherborne,
they go into the world with a determination
to do something remarkable with their
lives… and most of them do just that! It’s
not always plain sailing, but our community
has time on its side which is the benefit of
full boarding.
Frome FESTIVAL
Hidden Gardens 2020
– Save the date!
ADVERTISING FEATURE
The Hidden Gardens event continues
to grow in popularity year on year.
Last year 900 people over three days
visited the gardens...
For our 20th anniversary we have managed to squeeze
34 gardens onto the programme. Many of the gardens are
accessible to people who have limited mobility with 15 being
wheelchair accessible or partly accessible and 32 being
accessible by those who may need to use a stick.
This is a Festival of gardens with different and varied gardens
opening on different days in different locations. Some highlights
of the 3 days include 3 National Gardens Scheme gardens,
“In search of my mother’s garden,
I found my own.” Alice Walker
“Won’t you come into the garden?
I would like my roses to see you.”
Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Frome in Bloom winners, music, art, a fête, plant and honey sales
and afternoon tea provided by a bake-off finalist.
This year the Hidden Gardens will be open on Friday 10th,
Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July 2020, from 10.30am to
5.00pm. We hope the longer opening times and greater clustering
of gardens on the Saturday and Sunday will encourage more
journeys on foot.
The programme is also your individual ticket. The tickets will
cost £5 per person and give you access for all three days.
While tickets can be bought on the days of the Festival we
recommend buying and printing them in advance at
www.fromefestival.co.uk (available online from the beginning
of May). This will allow you time to plan your route and identify
the gardens you wish to see. Please note that you will not be
able to buy your ticket at individual gardens.
A personal look
at foster care
To celebrate Foster Care Fortnight (11th –
24th May) Mendip Living’s very own Adrian
Hill, once a foster child himself talks to a local
foster family about the rewards of fostering
here in Somerset.
What made you both decide to become foster parents?
We wanted to help children have a safe and loving environment.
How long have you been fostering for?
We’ve been fostering for 5 years now.
What do you find most rewarding about being foster parents?
Seeing the child grow as an individual and become part of a
family.
What are the challenges you come up against?
Tantrums/Anger/ food disorders these are only a few, just
remember to always liaise with your social worker.
Having your own children, how do they find it when a child
comes to stay with you?
It’s actually really good for them too - it helps them be
compassionate. They are happy to help and want to make them
feel comfortable and safe.
How do you make them feel part of the family?
They key is to give them routine and offer stability in a loving and
supportive environment. At the end of the day, children need
structure and they want to feel safe and supported.
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Do you foster children of any age?
No, we look after children from age 0-5 - hence the odd tantrums
we experience!
How long do they come to stay with you?
Anything up to 1 year before more permanent arrangements are
made for them.
How important is a good support network when you foster?
It’s essential. We all need people around us who can support us
in practical or emotional ways. It helps to know yourself that you
have extra support when and if you need it - it can be challenging
at times after all.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming
a foster parent?
You need to be 100% committed. It takes time and patience but
is truly rewarding.

2020 WEDDING TRENDS
From the Dress to the Cake...
WEDDED BLISS
The standard wedding traditions of going
to a church with your nearest and dearest,
bridesmaids in pastels and run of the mill
wedding table decor seem long behind
us as couples are starting to plan their
weddings according to their personalities.
Even Meghan Markle broke Royal tradition
in her wedding to Harry when she made
her own speech. With that in mind, we
take a look at some of the changing trends
for weddings.
THE DRESS
Whilst many brides still favour traditional
white dresses, a lot of brides are choosing
dresses away from tradition, opting for
dresses that not only make them look
incredible, but are easy and comfortable
to wear. Spending hours deliberating on
whether to go for a meringue, ballgown,
a-line or mermaid dress is out, and
instead, brides are choosing dresses that
show off their features whilst staying in line
with their personalities too. Newer style
options include gowns with pockets, twopiece
skirts and tops and changes from
day to night.
BRIDESMAIDS
Bridesmaids still, and will almost certainly
continue to do so, play a massive part in
a girl’s big day. They used to be a dressed
in a sort of one size fits all mentality,
with certain dress styles not suiting all
bridesmaids. That, luckily, is a thing of
the past, with brides taking their time to
choose dresses that flatter their friends,
are fun and comfortable to wear, and
usually able to be worn again after the
occasion. New trends include allowing
bridesmaids to choose their own dress
within a certain colour palette, or dresses
which can be tied in multiple ways.
ECO-FRIENDLY WEDDINGS
Sustainable weddings are becoming
increasingly popular amongst couples
tying the knot. With weddings creating
a lot of waste from leftover food to
unwanted wedding decor, and a big
carbon footprint on getting guests to
and from the venue, it is easy to see why
couples are looking for ways to reduce
their carbon footprint. Before you think
‘wedding in a field’, having an eco-friendly
wedding does not mean doing everything
outside. There are lots of ways that
you can make your day a little bit more
sustainable, such as choosing a location
close to you (less travelling for you and
guests), using e-invitations instead of
traditional invites, or opt for recycled
paper, and avoiding disposable dinnerware
and instead opting hiring equipment and
wedding decor. You can also make your
own wedding favours, or give out gifts
that people can reuse, we love the idea of
little packs of wildflower seeds or even an
eco-friendly soap from companies such as
Chateau du Savon.
WEDDING CAKES
Even wedding cakes have changed over
time. From your traditional fruit cake
through to cakes made from wheels
of cheese and even those made of
doughnuts, there are plenty of different
options to choose from. With increasing
numbers of food intolerances and allergies
and people stepping away from traditional
choices, couples again are choosing
cakes that reflect their personalities.
Sara Godfrey, Venue Manager at Rook Lane
Chapel tells us more about the venue...
Tell us more about getting married at Rook Lane?
Rook Lane Chapel is a truly wonderful setting to get married
in. It really combines historical grandeur with modern light filled
space and facilities. Every wedding is completely different and
individual, and we let you put your stamp on the day. I love how
varied all our weddings are.
Can I come and take a visit to find out more?
I recommend this to everyone that books. You can get a feel for
the space and I can discuss your requirements and make a plan
for whatever your event is.
The chapel is available for all sorts of events right?
Yes! We book a real variety of events, from talks, concerts,
workshops and private parties in the evenings, to daytime
bookings in the café/bar area, which opens into our beautiful
enclosed garden. We often host meetings, wakes and
small workshops during the week. It’s a good size and will
accommodate up to 30 people for meetings, and up to 60 for
small functions.
What sort of events have hired Rook Lane in the past?
We have hosted lots of exhibitions both pictures and sculpture,
and some of a more interactive and immersive nature. We have
hosted record launches by bands, book launches and signings,
charity art fairs, folk and comedy evenings, as well as theatre
productions, vintage and wedding fairs and weekend workshops.
What’s your involvement with Frome Festival this year?
We are hosting lots of varied events this year for the Festival
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Week including an exhibition about the 20 years of the Festival
itself. We also have a stand-up comedy night, talks, bands and
solo performers. There should be something for everyone.
What events have you got coming up this year?
I have a full summer of wedding parties and the occasional dinner
dance evening. We also have classical concerts, meditation
workshops, an Exhibition of Psychedelic Art and Sculpture, live
bands, a monthly architecture talk, film nights, and an outdoor
theatre production. This year the Handlebards who are a traveling
theatre troupe are performing Macbeth, which is a fantastic
evening. You just buy your tickets online, then show up with your
picnic and a chair or blanket to sit on in the garden. It’s a lovely
chilled evening.
What about parking?
We have a small amount of private parking available for evening
and weekend events, but there are lots of public car parks just a
short walk away in the town, or just along the road from us.
How do I get in touch?
Details of our events are on our website www.rooklane.org.uk
and on our Facebook page Rook Lane Chapel. For bookings
SOMETHING TO
SMILE ABOUT
Between 18th May and 18th June 2020,
National Smile Month will be sharing positive
messages and engaging others to develop and
maintain a healthy mouth. We look at what
can you do to improve your pearly whites...
Half the nation dislike their own smile - with many believing
the state of their teeth has held them back at work and in their
personal lives.*
Researchers found a large percentage of the population are so
self-conscious about their teeth that it affects them on an almost
daily basis. In fact, one in five feel their teeth have had more of
a negative effect on their confidence than their physique, hair or
wrinkles. According to the study 17 per cent of those who took
part have concerns that the appearance of their smile has had a
negative impact on their career. Even more worryingly, one in ten
went as far as to claim they have been turned down for a job due
to their problematic teeth.
SO WHAT CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE A SMILE?
Straightening
Yes, adults can have orthodontic treatment to straighten their
teeth. Adults can have orthodontic treatment to correct the
same dental problems that children have, such as crowding, an
overbite or gaps between the teeth.
According to the experts at Bupa, Orthodontic treatment can
improve the positioning of your teeth and, in turn, their look and
how well they work. Since crowded teeth are more difficult to keep
clean, orthodontic treatment might reduce the risk of tooth decay
and gum disease.
Composite Bonding
Composite bonding (also known as tooth bonding or dental
bonding) offers a solution for minor damage or gaps in teeth.
When carried out as a cosmetic treatment, it is not available on
the NHS but many Bupa Dental Care practices offer cosmetic
composite bonding as a private service.
Bonding is usually used for filling chips, fractures or gaps
between teeth, or for fixing discolouration. A composite resin is
attached to a tooth and shaped to restore its original appearance.
The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth, so it will appear
as though it is a natural part of the tooth.
Dean's Hot Wings and Tagine
sure to be a hit at Royal
Bath & West Show
With The Royal Bath & West Show
taking place at the end of May, there is
growing excitement amongst foodies
about ‘The Great British Kitchen’
attraction...
Saturday
30th May
Its fully functional demonstration kitchen will be put to good use
during the show by three celebrity chefs, one of whom is Dean
Edwards.
Dean came second in BBC’s MasterChef Goes Large in 2006,
and became a household name cooking family-friendly recipes
on ITV’s This Morning and Lorraine. He’s also been featured on
shows including Good Morning Britain, MasterChef, Take on the
Big Eat; has written three cookbooks; and regularly features in
the food pages of national publications. He also has his own
YouTube channel, Dean Edwards Proper Food.
Bristol-born Dean’s ethos on food is that it should be achievable,
simple and above all taste fantastic. He takes inspiration from
across the globe but always uses ingredients familiar to us all,
and the recipes
he creates at The
Royal Bath & West
Show will, where possible, use items which can be purchased
from its Artisan Food Tent. Dean will be at the Show on the final
day (Saturday 30th May), where he will be creating Hot Wings
and Mac and cheese; and Tagine and Gnocchi. Our mouths are
watering just thinking about it!
The other celebrity chefs are Briony May Williams, who will be
attending on Thursday 28th May, and Josh Eggleton, who will be
there on Friday 29th May.
Meet the
Development Chef
Ever wondered just what it takes to create the
perfect dish at Wiltshire farm Foods?
Development Chef Liam Newble explains, just
what it takes...
What does your role involve?
My role involves working closely with our wider WFF team and
Head Development Chef ‘Phil’ in finding new ingredients to
improve our existing meals in the brochure and to also bring in
new meals that our customers will enjoy.
How do you choose what type of dishes to create for
Wiltshire Farm Foods?
New meal ideas mainly come from comments and suggestions
from customers & WFF Drivers but we also go out and about in
shops, Cafes, Garden centres, look through foodie magazines
and TV programmes.
Does it involve lots of trial and errors?
Always!!!! We have to make sure most meals go through the
microwaves but when they don’t it’s a messy job to clean up!!
What about taste tests?
Even before new and improved meals get the green light we will
have an internal tasting with the WFF development team and we
will then bring in local WFF customers (around 30-40) treat this as
a day out with Teas/Coffees, ice cream and of course the meals
being tested with a question sheet and comment boxes. All the
feedback will then be processed and the high achieving meals
will be taken forward.
What’s the most popular dish you’ve created so far?
I would say the Lamb in Redwine & Redcurrant sauce. The lamb
is really tender and the sauce goes perfectly well.
How do you know when you’ve got the perfect dish?
Most of these dishes can take up to 6 months with so much
research done from online questionnaire to a vigorous customer
taste panels these meals have gone through quite a lot from the
first dish design to the dish on customers plate, to keep these
meals perfect is for our customers to give us the feedback via the
website or speak to our customer service and I can then amend
any issues and improve these meals even better!!
Do you have a favourite Wilshire Farm Food Dish yourself
Liam?
I have quite a few but after developing the New Extra tender
range I have a warm spot for all of them, when we have tasting
for visitors I’m always putting these on.
MEET THE
Fromies
We talk to businesses
in and around Frome
to who are passionate
about what they do...
THE BESPOKE
COLLAGE COMPANY
Who are you?
My names Violet and I’m a
collage artist living in Frome
What is collage art?
Collage art, put simply, is
taking bits of different things
to create a new whole. I use
it to create a piece of art that
not only shows a likeness
to a pet, but as a piece that
captures the relationship
between pet and owner.
It gives me the chance to
incorporate anything and
everything that’s special to
the owner, from a date, to
a place, names, themes, treats, favourite toys and stories they have
been through together. It allows me to create art that is uniquely
personal, which captures that special feeling and love shared.
Where can I see your artwork?
Nearly all of my art is commissioned, I now have pieces all over
the world, in Australia, America, Spain and Italy, and of course up
and down England. I have several example collages on display in
Glastonbury. This year I will also be entering my art into competitions,
so do check in on my website to find out where my work is being
displayed. You can follow my work on social media too, all under the
name “The Bespoke Collage Company”
What do you love about Frome?
I love the people, I love the friendly nature of strangers and all the
interesting people there are to meet. I love how everyone seems to
have a creative, exciting or unusual side. I love the huge variety of
events going on around the town, that there always seems to be
something new to get excited about or to get into. I love the look
of the town and the beautiful and quirky selection of independent
shops. I love that Frome has so many glorious places to walk my dog
and also that she is welcome in so many places.
FROME Independent MARKET
Who are you?
Tabitha Clayson, Director of The Frome Independent
What makes the independent Market so unique to Frome?
As many readers will probably know, Frome has been a
market town for centuries – there’s even record of it in the
Domesday book. The Frome Independent provides a platform
for independent designers, makers, producers and farmers
to connect with a community hungry to move away from their
screens and anonymous mass-produced goods. They come to
the market to buy from, be inspired by and have real life contact
with, the people who create, make and grow things.
Frome is particularly special it seems, as we’re right in the
middle of everything, but I think the icing on the cake is that
The Frome Independent takes over the whole of the town
centre, bringing a festival atmosphere, space for socialising and
community spirit to Frome’s winding, hilly and cobbled streets.
What have you got planned for 2020?
We’re looking forward to another great year, with lots of special
events planned, like our Garden Day special in May and Frome-
On-Sea, our pop-up beach for the August market and a re-run of
the WHY (We Hear You) skittles Guinness world record challenge
in June.
Our March market takes place on Sunday 1st March, with lots
of talented traders and food producers. We’re also working with
Fair Housing For Frome, who will be raising money and talking
about their upcoming Tiny Homes initiative.
Where can I park, if I’ve never been before?
If visitors are coming by car we ask that they park in one of our
designated park and ride car parks where they can then hop on
one of our fully accessible shuttle buses. More details can be
found at www.thefromeindependent.org.uk/visit
In the world of wine, Great Britain ranks as one of the smallest wine
regions. Arguably, though, it is one of the most dynamic, attracting plenty
of attention over here and making its mark with significant competition
wins and appraisals by wine experts and influencers both here and
overseas.
Great Britain is one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the world;
area planted with grapevines is growing year on year and now exceeds
over 5,000 acres, having expanded by nearly 200% in the last ten years
alone. Recently the wine industry’s body, Wines of Great Britain (WineGB),
predicted that in just over 20 years’ time, we may be producing 40 million
bottles.
There are now some 700 vineyards in England and Wales, with the
majority in the south of England and stretching up to Yorkshire and in
north and south Wales. You’ll find large wineries to one-man operations,
each with a story to tell. Approximately 70% of all production is sparkling
wine, with the remaining 30% delicious still white, red and rosé wine. In
2018 the UK produced just over 13 million bottles.
Luckily it is easy to discover our home-grown wines: English and Welsh
wines are now readily-available in supermarkets to independent retailers;
online retailers, as well as many restaurants and bars, and of course direct
from the vineyards themselves, either via their websites or by visiting the
cellar door.
The UK wine industry is launching their awareness campaign English
Wine Week and Welsh Wine Week which this year takes place from
Saturday 23 - Sunday 31 May. Over the Week look out for promotions,
events and activities to shine a light on this exciting industry and its wines.
The end of May kicks off the summer season and invites us outside to
explore, so what better time to visit to the vineyards themselves. There
are now around 200 vineyards open to visitors and located in some of the
most beautiful parts of the country.
Vineyards offer a range of experiences from guided and self-guided
English Wine Week
Celebrating our home grown wines
tours through a vineyard to soak up the beautiful surroundings, to
visiting the cellar door for a tasting. Some have a shop, restaurant
and even accommodation on site. It’s worth checking opening times as
some smaller vineyards are open by appointment or at set times. Larger
vineyards are open all year round. Guided tours are conducted by people
who are knowledgeable and entertaining and in some smaller vineyards
you may even get the owner or winemaker. Visitors will take away a great
memory and new experience.
Some vineyards are now working closely together to promote their region
and enhance other local attractions and amenities. Check out Kent’s
Wine Garden of England; Sussex Wineries; Vineyards of Hampshire;
Vineyards of the Surrey Hills to name but a few - there will soon be a
Yorkshire wine trail too.
So let’s enjoy a summer of English wine … in a country that sells one of
the widest ranges of wines across the globe, the wines produced on our
doorstep are a noteworthy success story and worth celebrating. Now
surely that is something to raise a glass to - cheers!
At sea, time takes on a different meaning. Minutes can blend into hours.
Hours slip into days. Days out in the vast, sweeping expanse. You can lose yourself
out there. And find something else. They say creativity comes from boredom.
How long have you been a chef at Kimbers?
I joined The Kitchen at Kimbers in late 2019. Growing up I was
surrounded by cooking. My dad is a chef in the Merchant Navy
and my uncle was a chef on private yachts. My experience
is varied from the 2 Rosette restaurant at the Eastbury Hotel
Sherborne to the Dorset Fine Dining Company. I also run the
Dorset Apple Cake Company, making cakes and chutneys. I love
experimenting with food, especially the challenge of creating
delicious interesting dishes from the whole animal. Nose to tail
eating is very important to me and I enjoy working at The Kitchen
as this is also an ethos close to the owners hearts.
What’s new on the menu for spring 2020?
We have a diverse menu that changes weekly... fish cakes with
fresh Brixham fish, our open sandwiches...today it’s 12 hour slow
cooked short rib beef with horseradish cream and of course the
home cooked hearty pie’s are always popular.
Do you use local produce to cook with?
All of our main ingredients are seasonal and local, with the
vast majority coming from the farm and other suppliers from
neighbouring counties. Bex, one of the partners, goes to Bath
Farmers Market every Saturday and buys fresh vegetables direct
from the grower. Bex also collects halloumi from Homewood
Cheese and any other interesting ingredients she thinks we can
use on our menu. All our suppliers are listed on our website
www.thekitchenatkimbers.co.uk
Can you cater for veggi/vegan diets at Kimbers?
Kimbers Farm Shop dairy and livestock farm is central to our
ethos. However we have a delicious beetroot and bean burger on
the menu at the moment which is
proving a hit with vegan and non
vegan customers alike. Many
of our dishes can be prepared
gluten free.
Tell us more about your
Sunday lunches?
The first Sunday of the month is
our Sharing Feast - lunch for families and groups of friends. Our
menu consists of sharing platters; it’s like being at home without
having to do the cooking or the washing up. We have a BYO
policy, but you can purchase wine from Pickers Wine Shop which
is situated in The Somerset Trading Barn (Antiques and Curios
Emporium) adjacent to the Farm Shop. Booking Recommended.
What would you recommend from the menu this weekend?
If it’s a light bite you are after we would recommend the home
cured beetroot gravadlax with mustard creme fraiche and rocket.
For a winter warmer it has to be the home produced lamb, red
lentil dahl with basmati rice and homemade Hurdlebrook yoghurt
flat bread.
Who’s you’re foodie hero?
Fergus Henderson, an English chef who founded the restaurant
St John on St John Street in London. He is often noted for his
use of offal and other neglected cuts of meat as a consequence
of his philosophy of nose to tail eating, something which is key in
our ethos also.
loaf bakehouse
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Located in the quirky courtyard of an
old brewery in a low-key backstreet
of Wells, LOAF. bakehouse is fast
becoming a brunchers destination....
Housed in one of the brewery’s old buildings the convivial
daytime vibe is paired with an airy plant-filled interior, eyecatching
lighting and a mixture of wooden tables and longer
benches which encourage communal dining. This family-run
business focuses on using the best of local ingredients.
Brunch is served from 8.30 am every day of the week alongside
silky smooth coffees, ethically sourced teas and superfood
smoothies. An in house bakery not only fills the place with
delicious smells but also fills the shelves with the best tangy,
crusty sourdough loaves. The eclectic menu has something for
everyone. There’s banana bread with house toasted granola,
figs, blueberries and lavender yoghurt, stacks of fluffy American
pancakes with maple-cured bacon, poached egg and cream and
New York eggs benedict with parma crisp, kale and avocado
hollandaise. There’s plenty for carnivores to love with the Loaf Big
breakfast (and for the extra hungry – the even Bigger breakfast),
the eternally loved LOAF. style bacon buttie and an indulgent
white hog pudding served with sauerkraut, rum-soaked prunes
and mustard.
Veggies and vegans can be equally delighted with the jackfruit
hash, wild mushrooms in cider cream, a vegan breakfast
served with tender, smokey homemade beans, and a punchy
Middle Eastern shakshuka. And with the addition of Loaf’s own
sourdough toast, the menu is elevated to even dizzier heights.
You can also find LOAF. in Shepton Mallet, 29 Town Street where
you’ll find the very same homely welcome, artisanal bakes,
cinnamon buns to delight and freshly baked daily.
Baking up a storm!
Brunch is cheerful & sociable and encourages
a perfect day. It makes you feel better about
sleeping in and missing breakfast...
ADVERTISING FEATURE
It also fills the gap when you’ve woken up far too early with your
little one and just can’t make it to lunch. We love brunch so much
we chose to serve it all day (until 2.30) because we think you
should be able to have a little bit of what you like when you like,
who doesn’t like a disruptive mealtime?
We like to take classic brunch dishes and cook them LOAF style,
often this will be as simple but delicious as swapping a basic
greasy spoon style sausage for a thick locally sourced, LOAF’s
own recipe merguez sausage, a combination of lamb and pork
lightly spiced or it may be transforming the old favorite French
toast into a Cinnamon doughnut, French toast with citrus &
cardamom syrup, orange crème fraiche and the option to add
locally sourced thick cut Bacon!
We love to source food locally, whether that’s our meat from
Glastonbury. Or our Vegan and allergen-free raw bars, whipped
by Green & Grainy. It is important to champion those living and
working around you.
A good brunch is not just about your whats on a plate, but a
moment. It almost feels like brunch is that dish of the day that is
not statutory. So you can have whatever you fancy and break all
the rules! However, it should not fill you right up to comatose you,
and it should most definitely punch enough flavor to force a grin.
We are an inclusive social space, loud and noisy at times. But
that is how we like it. We triumph our kid’s play area and always
have dog treats on the counter. We also champion sociable
dining with our large tables big enough for extended family &
friend gatherings. Our brunch menu is the icing on the doughnut
as we ensure we have a range of Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten and
Dairy-Free options available every day! All dishes are freshly
prepared, therefore, we can and will happily alter the dishes to
suit any dietary requirement.
Kids are as important to us as they are to you, we have them and
we were them! That’s why our kid’s menu (and everything else) is
tried and tested by our own two mini-bosses. Any ‘adult’ brunch
option can also be adapted for children and we have plenty of
kid-friendly snacks and bakes on offer each day. We also love to
hold Colourful Mind craft sessions during school holidays and
special occasions, information for these can be found on our
Facebook and Instagram.
Brunch is served 08.30 am - 2.30 pm seven days a week!
Outside of these times, we have a large selection of freshly
baked goodies for all you hungry revellers.

COOK, SLEEP,
ROCK, REPEAT
Katie Thomson caught up with
chef James Martin ahead of his
summer festival circuit and
discussed stellar culinary talents,
his new book and finding time to
rock out...
Katie: We must talk about Pub in the
Park – we spoke with Tom Kerridge a
couple of years back, just as he was
expanding the event out of Marlow
to include Bath and a couple of other
areas. In the past few years its really
become huge, attracting so much
talent from the food industry but also
the music industry so it must be quite
exciting to be involved?
James: He has roped me into it! He roped
me into it last year as he had managed to
double book himself! So now he wants
me to do it again! He’s probably off on
holiday! But it’s good fun, and anybody
who’s been there will know that its unique
and there’s nothing else like it.
So you’ll be hosting the Tunbridge
Wells and Chichester events?
Yeah that’s right, and I’ll be appearing at
the Bath one, Tom is hosting that one but
I’ll be there doing some demonstrations
and other bits and pieces. It’s a great lineup
of people that he’s got and I’m very
pleased to play my part.
I think it’s really nice that you try
to reflect the local restaurants in
each individual area plus there’s
some serious culinary talent from the
country as a whole.
Well the thing about the chefs is you get
the great and the good from all over the
place. So for example with Bath, you’ve
got Paul Ainsworth coming up from
Cornwall, Atul Kochhar from London,
Steven Terry from Wales, Angela Hartley
from London…we’ve got people from all
over the place! It’s the same with music;
there’s something for everybody.
Who are you looking forward to
seeing if you can steal a little time
away to enjoy it?
I’m a wannabe musician, I’ve got a little
band so I’m looking forward to seeing
a few of them. I listened to Toploader
when I was training as a kid working in
kitchens, so I’m looking forward to seeing
them. Beverley Knight I’ve known for
quite a while so it will be nice to say hi to
her and James Blunt is playing as well!
So I’m looking forward to chilling out and
fundamentally seeing my mates! All these
chefs I speak to on the phone quite a lot
but I only really ever see them at these
festivals so three in a year is great for me.
How does the cookery stage in the
festival setting compare to live
TV? I can image you are quite unflappable.
Well you’ve got a bit more to hand at my
place when we film at the house, and I
know where everything is. But they build
an amazing marquee where we do the
demos, that almost looks like something
from outer space. You never know with
the weather, we might get wet, so the
marquee is amazing. But the same team
that work on my show work on Pub in the
Park, so the industry is big but that group
is quite small. I’ve known the guys that
organise Pub in the Park from the twelve
years of doing Carfest.
So you are an old hand on the
festival circuit then?
I’ve been around it a long time! I do
certain food festivals, the biggest one
of its kind is in Bolton and had 400,000
people last year, and I usually do that
after Carfest South. I’m Hampshirebased,
so sort of in between the two
from Bath to Chichester area. I’m looking
forward to Chichester because I spend
a bit of time at Goodwood - so I know
and love the area. Tunbridge Wells I’m
interested in going to see because I’ve
not really been there a lot, and I love
going to Bath because there’s a great
guitar shop there that always gets a visit!
Your show Saturday Morning always
looks like a lot of fun to film, and in
particular you and Galton seem to
have a really great relationship.
The great thing about the show is the
chefs that come on I’ve known for years –
www.mendipliving.co.uk | 41

a lot of them are turning up to Pub in the
Park! I’ve known them for years and I’ve
supported them over the years, and of
course when I decided to leave Saturday
Kitchen they supported me since then
as well. So it’s an accumulation of me
supporting them and them supporting
me. So they’re great mates and I think
that comes across on camera.
Have you had any guests that have
been particularly memorable?
We had Jack Savoretti here recently,
he was fantastic. He was trying to learn
from the master baker Richard Bertinet,
who was attempting to teach him how to
make bread and he making a right mess
of it! So he was great fun. You just have
such a great laugh, and that’s the key to
doing it here.
We film it at the house and it’s quite
chilled out and very similar to this
festival. Those are the projects I’m
enjoying these days - and that’s why
Pub in the Park appeals so much. It’s
very much a family atmosphere and I
can just walk around. You go to some
festivals and you are hidden around the
back, you aren’t allowed to come out
and have a wander around.
Other than a busy schedule of
summer festivals, have you got any
books in the pipeline?
I’ve just finished a book and TV show
called Islands to Highlands. The TV
show will be out in April and book is out
now. We’ve also just taken over a hotel
at Silverstone so I’m going to be busy
doing that. Yeah, there’s a few things
happening and a few more things in the
pipeline - I should be busy! But not too
busy to indulge in a bit of music and fun
this summer!
Find out more about Pub in the Park here:
pubintheparkuk.com
James Martin’s Islands to Highlands is
published by Quadrille Publishing and is
available through good bookshops and
online now.
EASTEr
eats
The next big cooking fest after the festive feast, we think cooking for
Easter should be easy. So we've gathered some seasonal favourites with
minimal fuss, all from the fantastic cooking app cookwithmands.com
GRIDDLED
ASPARAGUS
with citrus hollandaise
The perfect starter, light and delicious - it
also lets seasonal hero asparagus shine!
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 20 mins
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS
450g asparagus
1 lemon
1 dash olive oil
For the hollandaise:
2 large egg yolks
1 tbsp fresh orange juice
half a lemon
2 tsp lemon zest
125g cold butter
METHOD
Juice the half lemon, grate the lemon
zest from the whole lemon, then cut that
lemon into slices. Dice the cold butter.
To make the hollandaise, in a medium
heatproof bowl, whisk together the egg
yolks, orange and lemon juice, lemon
zest, and some salt and freshly ground
black pepper. Sit the bowl over (but not
touching) a pan of gently simmering
water and add 2 or 3 pieces of butter,
whisking continuously until melted.
Continue adding the remaining butter in
this way, whisking until the sauce is thick
and smooth. Remove from the heat.
Heat a griddle pan until hot. Drizzle the
asparagus and lemon wedges with a
little olive oil and griddle for 2-3 minutes
each side, until just tender. Season with
salt and pepper, and arrange on a platter.
Drizzle with the hollandaise to serve.
CHEDDAR &
ONION seeded rolls
Something about Easter makes baking
feel right. This is great for the main meal or
as a sandwich with any leftover lamb.
Prep: 65 mins | Cook: 15 mins
Makes: 10
INGREDIENTS
3 tsp black onion seeds
375g seeded bread mix (from M&S)
200g mature Cheddar
180ml lukewarm water
flour, for dusting
olive oil
METHOD
Heat a frying pan over a medium-high
heat and add the onion seeds. Move
them around the pan for 1 minute, until
they produce an oniony aroma. Set aside.
Tip the bread mix into a large bowl. Stir in
three-quarters of the cheese, two-thirds
of the onion seeds and the lukewarm
water. Mix to form a ball of dough.
Turn out onto a floured surface and
knead for about 10 minutes until soft and
elastic. Shape into rolls, then put on oiled
baking sheets, well apart.
With a knife, slash the tops of the rolls.
Loosely cover each sheet with lightly
oiled cling-film and leave in a warm
place for 40 minutes, until the dough has
almost doubled in size. Heat the oven to
220°C/425°F/gas 7 (200°C for fan ovens).
Once the rolls have risen, scatter them
with the reserved cheese and onion
seeds. Bake for 12-15 minutes until
golden and hollow-sounding when
tapped underneath. Delicious served
warm with butter.
4 (160°C for fan ovens). Transfer the
potatoes to a roasting tin, drizzle with the
oil and sprinkle with the seasoning. Roast
the potatoes for 40 minutes, turning
occasionally, until tender and crisp.
SLOW-ROAST
LAMB
The Easter centrepiece - this one is meltin-the-mouth
delicious and just needs
low, slow cooking.
Prep: 30 mins | Cook: 4 hours 10 mins
Serves: 8
INGREDIENTS
2kg leg of lamb (bone in)
400g shallots
2 whole garlic bulbs
150ml Madeira/Marsala or other sweet
fortified wine
2 tsp plain flour
2 tsp butter
Seasoning paste
2 lemons
4 sprigs rosemary
4 garlic cloves
8 anchovies
1 tbsp olive oil
METHOD
To prep: If large, peel and half the
shallots. Half crossways the whole garlic
bulbs. Soften the butter. Zest and half
the lemons. Finely chop the leaves of the
rosemary. Finely chop the garlic cloves.
Chop the anchovies.
Heat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan/gas 3.
To make the seasoning paste, put the
lemon zest, rosemary, garlic cloves,
anchovies and freshly ground black
pepper in a bowl. Use a fork to mash
together into a chunky paste. Stir in the oil
and set aside.
Heat a roasting tin on the hob and brown
the lamb for a couple of minutes on each
side. Remove the lamb from the tin and
place on a board.
Cook the shallots in the roasting tin (add
a little olive oil if necessary) for 5 minutes
or until golden, stirring occasionally.
Remove and set aside.
Meanwhile, use a thin, sharp knife to
make deep, angled incisions all over the
lamb.
Push the seasoning paste into the cuts.
Return the lamb to the tin. Add the
shallots, garlic and lemon halves. Pour
the Madeira and 100ml water around the
lamb. Cover the roasting tin tightly with
foil and roast for 3 hours.
Remove the foil and return to the oven
for a further hour. Meanwhile, mix the
flour and butter to form a paste. When
the lamb is ready, transfer it to a carving
board or platter, with the garlic, lemons
and shallots, and loosely cover with foil.
Strain the juices from the roasting tin into
a small saucepan and bring to the boil.
Whisk in the flour and butter paste, then
simmer until the sauce is thickened and
glossy. Serve with the lamb.
ULTIMATE
ROAST
POTATOES
Perfect roast potatoes with a flawless,
crisp crunch.
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 45 mins
Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
1kg potatoes
1 tbsp Seasoning for Roast Potatoes
2 tbsp olive oil
METHOD
Peel and cut the potatoes in half, or into
salted water for 5 minutes and drain well.
Heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas
WHOLE SALMON
with roasted squash and
tarragon olive mayonnaise
The perfect celebratory fish dish for
Good Friday.
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 1 hour 5 mins
Serves: 8
INGREDIENTS
1 lemon
2kg whole Lochmuir salmon, cleaned
3 tbsp olive oil
8 sprigs tarragon
20g unsalted butter
1 large butternut squash
8 whole garlic clove
2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
200ml mayonnaise
2 tbsp pitted green olives, chopped
METHOD
Heat the oven to 190°/170°C fan/gas 5.
Halve the lemon, set one half aside and
slice the other into rounds. To cook the
salmon, start with two large sheets of
foil, one on top of the other, in a roasting
tin large enough to hold the whole fish.
Brush the foil with 1 tablespoon oil and
lay the salmon on top.
Stuff 4 tarragon sprigs, the lemon slices
and a little salt and pepper in the cavity.
Dot the butter over the surface of the
salmon and bring the foil around it in a
loose parcel, sealing the edges tightly.
Roast for 1 hour, then set aside to rest for
15 minutes before opening the foil.
Meanwhile, slice the squash into wedges,
skin on, and toss with the remaining olive
oil and the whole garlic cloves on a large
baking tray.
Roast for 45 minutes, until the squash
is golden then scatter with the pumpkin
seeds and return to the oven for a final 5
minutes.
To make the mayonnaise, strip the leaves
from the remaining tarragon sprigs and
finely chop.
Stir into the mayonnaise with a squeeze
of lemon juice from the remaining lemon
half and the chopped olives.
Season with black pepper only. Serve the
baked salmon with the roast squash, soft
garlic and tarragon-olive mayonnaise.
HOT CROSS BUN
PUDDING
A great alternative to bread and butter
pudding - and a way to use up any
leftover hot cross buns and Easter eggs!
Prep: 40 mins | Cook: 40 mins
Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
2 eggs
8 mini hot cross buns, or four large
1 pear, peeled, cored and cubed
4 tbsp hazelnut chocolate spread
25g dark chocolate, chopped
150ml double cream
25ml whole milk
25g caster sugar
METHOD
Cut each bun in half, then sandwich
together with the chocolate spread.
Arrange in an ovenproof dish and scatter
over the pear cubes and chocolate.
Whisk together the eggs, cream, milk and
sugar. Pour the mixture over the buns
and leave for at least 30 minutes to allow
it to soak in.
Heat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4
(160°C for fan ovens) and bake for 35-40
minutes until golden and just set. Stand
for 5 minutes before serving.
RHUBARB AND
MASCARPONE
meringue cake
Another seasonal favourite - rhubarb.
Meringues can be made ahead, but eat
on the day you assemble with cream.
Prep: 1 hour 25 mins | Cook: 2 hours
Serves: 8
INGREDIENTS
For the purée:
400g rhubarb, cut into 2cm pieces
2 tbsp caster sugar
1 vanilla pod, deseeded
4 tbsp orange juice
For the meringue:
225g caster sugar
4 egg whites
For the filling and topping:
50g icing sugar
350g mascarpone
30g shelled pistachios, roughly chopped
METHOD
Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
Toss together the rhubarb, sugar, vanilla
pod pieces and orange juice. Spread
out the mixture in a small baking dish
and roast for 15 minutes, or until tender.
Remove from the oven and set aside
to cool.
Turn the oven down to 110°C/90°C fan/
gas ¼. Reserve 10 pieces of rhubarb
for decoration, and purée the rest in a
blender. Only add the juices from the
baking dish if the purée seems too thick.
Set aside.
Trace 4 x 18cm circles on baking paper
as a guide for the meringue discs. Put
the sugar and 90ml water into a heavybased
saucepan. Carefully swirl the water
around to ensure the sugar is covered.
(Do not stir after swirling as this will
encourage sugar crystals to form on the
sides of the pan.) Put the pan over a high
heat until the mixture bubbles.
Reduce the heat to medium and allow
the mixture to bubble away for about
10 minutes. If using a thermometer the
syrup is ready when it reaches 116°C.
Otherwise, test the mixture by dropping
a small amount into a cup of cold water,
lift it out and if it can be rolled into a soft
ball, it’s ready. If it’s still slippery and loose,
bubble a little longer.
Meanwhile, in a clean bowl, whisk the
egg whites to stiff peaks using an electric
whisk. When the syrup is ready, add it
to the whisked egg whites, whisking
continuously until the mixture is glossy
and the syrup is fully incorporated.
Pipe or spread the mixture onto the
prepared baking sheets, filling in the
circles. Bake for 2 hours, then keep the
oven door ajar with a wooden spoon and
bake for another hour to crisp up the
surface. Turn the oven off and leave the
meringues to cool in the oven for a further
hour.
To make the filling, beat the icing sugar
into the mascarpone, adding more if you
prefer a sweeter flavour. Then gently fold
about two-thirds of the rhubarb purée
into the mascarpone.
To assemble the cake, spread a meringue
disc with a third of the mascarpone and
top with some of the reserved purée,
gently rippling it with a table knife. Repeat
these steps with the other discs and
decorate the top with the reserved pieces
of rhubarb and the chopped pistachios.
Sustainably built holiday homes
Cookswood is a new sustainable holiday development in
Somerset, we sat down with the team to find out more
about the project...
What is Cookswood?
Cookswood is an exciting new collection
of sustainably built holiday homes
situated in the site that was once
Holcombe Quarry in-between Shepton
Mallet and Frome in Somerset. As a
family, we wanted to bring the site into
the next phase of it’s life cycle, and
create a space where people and wildlife
alike could thrive, and memories could
be made that would last a lifetime.
You are able to choose your preferred
freehold plot on the estate and a home
design from our selection of modern
and traditional styles, and we then build
your new home for you. With staycations
on the rise in the UK, a Cookswood
property is also an excellent investment
opportunity, as you are also able to rent
out their holiday home, enabling a return
on your investment.
What are some of the facilities you will
be building?
We have some very exciting plans over
the next few years. Cookswood will
have so much to offer, including many
wonderful facilities and activities, with
something for everyone. This includes
a luxury spa with an infinity pool and
fitness suite, farm shop and cafe, and
a restaurant and bar for fine dining.
Children will be entertained with the kids’
club, woodland play areas and endless
outdoor pursuits. As well stables and
bridleways, there will also be miles of
scenic nature trails and cycle paths, and
our nature study centre will give you
insight into how we enhance habitats
to benefit wildlife. Our clear-water
mineral lake with beach areas will offer
breathtaking views and water activities
such as swimming, kayaking and
paddleboarding.
What stage of the project are you
currently at?
We are still early days in construction,
with plots available for reservation now.
Two phases are currently released: The
Beeches, which has woodland and
meadow views, and Bector Wood, which
overlooks the mineral lake. This year will
see the completion of the Reception,
Farm Shop and Cafe, along with
communal areas and gardens.
How will the project benefit the local
community?
Our family originate from the local villages
surrounding Cookswood, and all of our
team live in the local area. Because
of this, we are passionate about our
surrounding villages and towns, and we
were thrilled to receive support from the
local parishes. We are keen on creating
a large amount of jobs for local people,
including local tradesmen, and benefiting
local businesses. As we progress, we are
also excited to be able to offer annual
events for local people and passes for
local schools to use the activities and
educational nature facilities.
What is the role of the Design and
Build team?
The design and build team handle all
aspects of construction. You are able to
work with us to make your own choices
for the interior of your new property,
creating a unique home that has been
partly designed by you and reflects your
lifestyle and personal taste.
Can I view the site?
If you are interested in purchasing at
Cookswood, we recommend you book an
appointment to see the estate. We offer
private tours with a member of our sales
team, who will also be able to provide
further information and answer any
questions you may have.
RENEW
Refresh
RENOVATE
Spring is a time of rebirth and it makes
sense that it’s a period to think about
changes we want to make in the home.
Whether your ambitions are large or small
in scale, here’s some inspiration to get you
going on your transformation...
RENEW your soft furnishings.
Some strong trends to emerge this
season are hand-printed monochromes
and really textural, woven pieces with a
Scandi-boho vibe.
Throws and blankets are great to mix
up the look when seasons change. A
new rug can really change a space too
- uniting furniture and making a space
more cohesive.
Dobbies
REFRESH your walls with some new
prints. Never underestimate the transformative
power of art! Get some favourite posters,
postcards or even fabrics framed or invest in
some new, fun eye candy for the walls - it’s cheap
but effective!
We love Desenio’s vast range of posters, with
options for framed, unframed and mounted
finishes. From £3.95, desenio.co.uk
RENOVATE by bringing
the outside in. Try to create connected
spaces, either by echoing flooring
choices in the home and the patio, or
using complementary furniture styles
as you’ll see in the home.
Some experts estimate that bi-folding
doors can add around 5-10% to the
resale valuation of a property, so
if you’re thinking about renovation
changes, glazing is a good investment
which will also improve the way you
use the space in the interim. Metal
Crittall doors also make a fabulous
statement when paired with other
black glazing and fixtures.
for a larger-scale change with a
big impact, shutters are a fabulous
choice - we love the plantation style
ones - you can really shut the world
MULTI-DIMENSIONAL
CLEANING
VAX are market leaders in the cordless cleaning
industry and their latest releases certainly have
us excited (and yes, it’s totally ok to get excited
about vacuums).
TIP: QUICK WINS
When you’re feeling overwhelmed
by mess, try just one of these
quick wins:
First up is the Glide ONEPWR Hard Floor
Cleaner (£249) is a god-send if you have mostly
hard floors in the home - it vacuums, washes
and dries at the same time and kills 99.9% of
bacteria. It’s built-in LED light helps you spot dirt
and its lightweight design makes it easy to use.
For carpeted areas and furniture, the new
ONEPWR Blade 4 (£219.99) is a great choice.
At only 3.1kg it’s light enough to use all over
the house and still offers unrivalled suction
- it outperforms the UK’s top 3 best-selling
cordless vacuums.
The main advantage to all of these products
is the ONEPWR battery that is fully shareable
across the products, which means you can buy
two if you like to extend run-time, or you can
share batteries between ‘bare units’, products
without batteries - saving money.
Both available from www.vax.co.uk
REFRESH with a deep clean. We all
know how satisfying it is to spring clean and
being thorough is the name of the game - pull
out furniture, wipe down all surfaces (including
skirting boards, light switches, shelves etc), and
get scrubbing. Brabantia have a great range
of products to keep you on top of your kitchen
tidiness game - we love the silcone dish drainer
which folds away and the food caddy to help you
keep food waste recylcing tidy and odour free.
Go through your dresser and
choose one drawer. Take
everything out and refold and stack.
Choose one collection (athletic
equipment, tools, cleaning supplies,
etc.) and declutter. Toss or recycle
anything you no longer use.
Vacuum your car.
Install hooks in your garage.
Use them to hang beach chairs,
tools, or bikes.
Declutter the tops drawer of
your night table. Dust, tidy, and
purge your night table of anything
you no longer need.
Walk around your home and
gather light bulbs, batteries,
and stamps. Make sure you store
these in the same spot so you
don’t buy more than you need.
Go through one file drawer and
declutter. Recycle old papers,
shred credit card statements, and
refile anything out of place.
Store your receipts. Sit at your
desk, open your wallet, and input
receipts into your filing system.
Do a clutter sweep. Sit on the
couch in your living room and
notice any distracting piles.
Declutter.
Recycle some electronics. Do
you have an older item (television,
gaming system, or VCR) that
you’re not sure how to recycle?
Find your item, and schedule a
time to recycle it
The existing exterior wall of the kitchen was
removed & a new extension added across the back of
the house to create a new social family hub.
This Seventies house suffered from a small, dark, galley kitchen when it was
bought by the Storrar family in 2018. They asked husband and wife team,
David and Charlotte, from Frame Interiors to help them create a large, open
plan kitchen that suited their families needs. The extension was added and a
range of bespoke fitted furniture was designed to create cooking, eating and
social spaces within the room. The project started in May 2018 and was
complete by September 2019.
Frame Interiors specialise in bespoke kitchens and
fitted furniture, creating spaces that will stand the
test of ti me and be treasured for years to come. David
and Charlotte bring together expertise in
architecture, interior design and furniture making to
offer a unique and creative approach to every project.
TILES
FLOOR TILES
BEST FOR: Kitchens and
bathrooms - especially if walls also
need covering.
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You
like stylish finishes and the lowmaintenance
quality of tiles. They
also conduct heat well for underfloor
heating.
TAKE TO THE
FLOOR
Time to refresh the flooring in your home?
We look at four popular materials and
which areas they work best for...
WOODEN FLOORING
BEST FOR: Living spaces like sitting rooms and studies.
TIPS & TRICKS: There are so
many finishes available - the trend for
patterns isn’t abating - we love the
Boreal Mix Wood-Effect Tiles, above right, and the Grande
Saltram on the kitchen floor, left, both Original Style.
TIPS & TRICKS: Take
time to consider if you
want hardwood floors or
engineered wood flooring.
Engineered wood flooring
tends to work better in
moist-prone areas, as
their base flexes less. Well
maintained solid wood
floors will last for decades
and can be re-sanded
multiple times.
WOOD
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You are looking for a classic
option which adds longterm value to your home. You do
have to be mindful of which rooms you choose to use it in.
Both options provide lots of
benefits and many colour
and pattern choices, so it’s
worth doing your research.
Image from flooringvillage.co.uk
LUXURY VINYL TILES
BEST FOR: These work
anywhere in the home, but
particularly well in kitchens and
bathrooms or high traffic areas.
They are easy to maintain.
A GOOD CHOICE IF:
You want a hard-wearing, low
maintenance floor with an
enormous range of patterns
and finishes. We love the new
heritage-style collections from
Karndean and Amtico plus their
wood and stone effect tiles are
very realistic.
Karndean
LVT
TIPS & TRICKS: You can
use these anywhere and the
way you lay them can create
some great personal style.
Amtico
CARPETS
BEST FOR: Bedrooms and some living rooms
- nothing replicates the cosiness of a carpet. Also
good for noise reduction.
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You have small children
- stain resistant blends are available. There is a
huge choice when you buy carpets - the colours
can really complement a scheme and the soft feel
instantly warms up a room and provides thermal
insulation - perfect for any property.
TIPS & TRICKS: In
high traffic areas choose
hardwearing finishes like the
stylish 100% wool Berber
collection from Kingsmead
Carpets.
Kingsmead Carpets
Kingsmead Carpets -
Berber Traditions
Luxury Vinyl Tiles are not
known for their environmental
credentials (other than their
long-lasting finish) so we were
excited to hear about Amtico’s
new Cirro range which is
PVC free. At the moment it’s
a commercial product, but
it’s good to see the industry
adapting to consumer demand.
Could your next
home be out there
right now?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that in
order to be in the market for your new dream
home you need to be in a position to buy your
new dream home; for many homeowners
this has been a daunting prospect over the
past three years, with so many uncertainties
surrounding the housing market.
However, and as predicted, the turning of the new decade has
brought with it a clearer picture of the future for UK homebuyers.
2020 has already seen unprecedented sales success as we are
now seeing pre Brexit activity return to the housing market. This
is brilliant news for sellers as it means that a new home is now
within reach. However we are increasingly seeing sellers trying
to wait for the ideal home to come on the market only to miss
out on buying it as they are not in a position to make an offer. At
Forest Marble we encounter this problem on a regular basis and
we take pride in helping our sellers find the perfect new home.
Our best advice to anyone is if you want to move you need to be
in a position to buy, once you have found a suitable buyer it does
not mean you have to buy a house yourself the same day! Keen
buyers will wait for sellers to find the right property.
ANNIE SLOAN ON HOW
COLOUR MAKES YOU FEEL
Colour is life-affirming and joyful. Colour
bring happiness. Splashes of bright
colour have been used to delight and
thrill throughout the history of art and
design; and humans have always been
drawn to bright and bold new pigments.
Access to colour in the 21st century has
been completely democratised (where
in the past bold, highly pigmented
colours were the preserve of the
wealthy and the powerful) so let’s make
the most of it and have some fun!
ANNIE’S 3 TIPS FOR
BEGINNERS WHO WANT TO
UPDATE THEIR HOMES WITH
COLOUR BY THEMSELVES
1. Start with a neutral then add colour
rather than the other way around.
Remember that dark neutrals exist! I
love Graphite because every colour
works against it and is emphasized by
the contrast.
2. No more than two bold colours
unless you¹re prepared to think about it
very carefully and be vigilant about what
you bring into your home and where you
place it which can rather spoil the fun
of designing and decorating your space!
3. Trends come and go; so choose
colours that you really love rather than
what’s fashionable. It¹s your home and
you should love it.
ANNIE SLOAN ON PANTONE¹S
COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2020
CLASSIC BLUE
Blue is one of my favourite colours,
especially in interiors, because of
its calming, recessive qualities. My
bedroom at home is Aubusson Blue
and it sends me into a dreamy sleep
every night. I’m so glad Pantone have
chosen to highlight this blue for 2020,
as I think we all need a little calm and
tranquillity for the coming year! This
shade, which perfectly matches my
colour, Napoleonic Blue, really does
take its namesake of a classic blue
it¹s reminiscent of the ultramarine
and cobalt blue pigments use in
neoclassical interiors, yet it still looks
fresh and modern.
ANNIE SLOAN ON OCHRE
It’s strong but not overpowering as
a bright yellow could be. Chalk Paint
in Arles is a perfect shade for this,
as it suggest warmth, sunshine and
positivity. It asserts itself without being
demanding. It has energy yet
it’s calming; it relates to the
love for green, for the respect
for the environment and
consciousness of the impact
we¹re having on our planet.
It¹s natural but it¹s positive,
vibrant and energetic.
For a calmer shade use Chalk
Paint in Old Ochre for calm;
it¹s a faded, calico/parchment
Ochre so very restful.
ANNIE SLOAN ON
WHITE
White is not an emotional
colour so lighting is very
important to add the emotion
and warmth to a scheme. Team
warmer white shades of furniture and
soft accessories with lighting that has
warmer toned LED bulbs to create a
clean yet inviting interior. I like to use a
lot of table and floor lights in a room I
think they add a lot of character and
interest.
ANNIE SLOAN ON GREEN
As with food, so with paint. I¹ve got
grassy, fresh Antibes Green on my
cupboards and sideboards, with lots
and lots of greenery and foliage for
texture, it’s so fresh and complements
my cooking style organic ingredients
in a back to nature environment. Bright
colours in the kitchen wake you up
in the morning and send you into the
world energised and positive.
ANNIE SLOAN ON PAINTING
FURNITURE
Dining chair
When you do a chair, it’s important to
turn it upside and paint the underneath
first. You won’t miss bits that way and
actually, it’s quite a fun way to paint.
Some people find chairs boring to paint,
but I love it!
C hest of drawers
I always start with the drawers. There’s
no right or wrong order to paint the
drawers, but I always start with the sides
and then finish with the top. I take the
drawers out of the carcass and paint the
fronts with a thick coat. It’s important to
thin the paint with water when painting
the sides of the drawers – you need
some wiggle room to push and pull the
drawers in and out with ease!
Wardrobe
With a free standing wardrobe, I’d paint
the body of the wardrobe and then
focus on the doors. I do the doors as
a separate task, as there’s lots of parts
to consider. The inside, the outside and
the hinges. You must paint both with the
door open and with the door closed to
make sure you don’t miss any areas or
get any drips.
How to paint large pieces of
furniture
Logistically, I’d suggest you start by
cutting in and creating an outline of
the piece of furniture before painting
the whole piece. If you’re painting a
built in wardrobe I’d suggest the same
steps as a free standing piece, doing
the doors separately, closed, open etc.
Painting furniture that can’t be moved
can transform a whole room. I’ve seen
so many customers update their kitchen
by painting their units, and it looks like a
completely new kitchen!
We meet
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen Designer, artist and WIT
Sally Thomson was recently invited to the beautiful Cotswolds home of
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen to find out more about his latest wallpaper
range, the creativity behind his work and how he gets his inspiration
from William Morris...
Sally: Your lovely late father was a
surgeon and your mother was a teacher,
what made you choose to go into the arts?
Laurence: Because I really didn’t want to
be a surgeon and I really didn’t want to
be a teacher! When my father died it was
so tragic. I was only nine and he was so
eminent and it was so embarrassing being
kind of patted on the head with people
saying ‘Oh you are going to take after
your father’. Just the idea of surgery was
just so abhorrent! Not that I’m particularly
squeamish. Actually I’m often drawn to the
nastier sorts of 14th century alter pieces,
where there’s a lot of cutting up saints! But
my sister is a doctor so it is definitely in
the blood. I actually always wanted to be
a barrister. It was very simple, ever since I
was very young and it was only when the
absolute reality of how much work it would
require hit me at about sixteen that I thought
no. I was intellectually quite successful
at school and so there was an enormous
shockwave when I suddenly decided
that I was going to do art instead which
is something that I never considered as
something that I was here to do.
You appeared on ‘Who Do You Think You
Are’ and you discovered more about your
grandparents.
It was the dullest ‘Who Do You Think
You Are’ ever. And I did say to them that
unfortunately I am the most interesting thing
in my family!
So your great grandfather being blown up
by a U-boat didn’t count?
Actually he was quite interesting. He
was a very exotic and powerful person, I
remember him very clearly and he died
when I was about four. Very commanding
and very elegant. He also had a reputation
for being very over-perfumed! But he got
sunk in both world wars! He was obviously
completely and utterly indestructible. He also
ended up getting a medal from the mayor of
Nagasaki right in the middle of the second
world war; when we were at war with Japan!
He saved an entire crew of Japanese
merchant shipmen and rowed them ashore
himself. So it was all very bemusing. But
I remember my mother said to me during
filming: ‘Never be part of somebody else’s
dynasty, start your own.’ After my father died
and when she became very ill she became
very feisty about stuff. She was inevitably
very protective of us as children. And it was
difficult for her as her family felt that she
was not fit to bring us up and wanted to step
in and even social services were sniffing
around.
You went to Camberwell College of Arts
is that where you found your passion for
interior design?
No. I went to Camberwell to do the
foundation course without having a clear
idea yet of what I wanted to do. In fact at that
stage, at the interview stage they felt I was
better suited to the illustration course. But
actually I felt very strongly whilst doing the
foundation course that I wanted to do fine
art, to do painting. This was because I was
very aware of the quite crushing snobbery
that was happening in the art market, which
is that if you were a painter/fine artist you
could go on and do whatever you wanted,
such as stage design or illustration. You
brought an enormous amount of kudos with
you if you did that. But if you specialised as
an illustrator you would never be able to do
fine art.
But fine art must have been very difficult
to break into?
It was very difficult, I had to totally change
because up until that point I am ashamed
to say I was quite arrogant about my art.
I know you will find this very difficult to
believe! But I always had a phenomenal
facility to draw, I could draw very well and
very effortlessly. But too stylistically. So half
way through I had to pretend that I liked
doing things the way they liked to, you know
with the little scratchy marks and making
paintings very dank and brown. So I did all
of that to get to get onto the fine art course,
which I did, and then immediately threw off
the cloak and went back to my monumental
neo-classical nudes in blousy landscapes,
which I think annoyed the feminist
movement in Camberwell! I used to say
‘For goodness sake, I am celebrating these
women, look at them, they are goddesses!’
Nudes are history and truths.
www.mendipliving.co.uk continued| 61

So when did your first break come in TV?
Well, I was on Magpie when I was a child!
I know! That was very difficult though
because my father had removed the ITV
button so that we couldn’t watch ITV, so he
had to find it again so that he could watch
me in it. I remember my parents being very
disapproving, saying ‘Why couldn’t you
go on Blue Peter?’. Magpie was just too
funky! They all wore flares and had regional
accents.
But then you got into it, and along came
other programmes, such as Changing
Rooms etc?
As soon as I left college I was on the
edge of a lot of media stuff. I had a very
successful degree show and sold paintings
to people like Adam Ant and Terry Jones.
I was with the Crucial Gallery in Notting
Hill who were very, very fashionable. So I
actually ended up doing some weird stuff
like advertising work in Japan, but that’s
when I had a kind of scene change and
decided I didn’t want to do any of that at
all, and went off and spent three years
marketing rubber flooring. Because I just felt
like it. I actually really enjoyed it, and I really
enjoyed the responsibility of it. But after
three years I started looking around at what
I really wanted to do. I had done so many
different things at college and I had done
a lot of interior design, but I had also done
an enormous amount of stage design and I
was very keen on that. I’m still keen on that
now! But I sort of trickled into interiors really
through styling committee parties and then
I’d be asked to design a conservatory and
things went from there. And I was literally
plucked from that to do a screen test for
the BBC for something they were calling
‘Changing Rooms’. And the rest they say
is history.
We must talk about your new wallpaper.
How did that happen?
Well, similarly to when you were asking
about the television break, one of the
defining moments was Changing Rooms,
which is funny because I was quite grumpy
about doing it. I was very busy and I had a
lot of stuff going on but I filmed it. But it did
have a disastrous effect on my business. I
had a really lovely coterie of about eight or
nine repeat clients who were terribly discreet
and very wealthy. It started getting irritating
when I would turn up for a site meeting and
there would be paparazzi, and so one-byone
I started getting those ‘it’s not you, it’s
me’ telephone calls from clients, who would
say that they love my work but they can’t
cope with it all. But it was actually my wife
Jackie who came up with this idea of ‘if
everybody in the world is watching television
then lets sell to everybody in the world.
Let’s work with B&Q, Homebase, House of
Fraser. Let’s create licensed products’.
Your latest design of wallpapers are
exquisite. The intricacy of some of these
designs is absolutely beautiful. How do
you set about creating that?
Well, this is the big thing because it’s now
twenty years since we actually launched
this and it’s been incredibly successful and
actually that’s what I want on my tombstone!
I don’t want ‘that bloke off the telly’. I want
‘Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen - Designer’.
That’s what I do. But for the twentieth
anniversary of the brand I wanted to have
something really very authoritative.
When you create that design, the
bit I don’t get is how you turn it into
wallpaper. How does that work? And
where do you create them? At home?
Largely on planes! My rider, you would
expect snow leopards and lilies, actually
consists of Epsom salts, gin and a drawing
board. Very monastic! Everything starts as
a drawing, which I will do wherever I am
(which can even sometimes be in the lounge
of an airport, should inspiration strike!).
Sometimes I’ll come back from being away
with an enormous portfolio of drawings, but
more often than not I’ll photograph them
on my phone and send them to the design
office and then they put them into repeat.
I’ll always design with repeat in mind. The
repeat is the clever thing because I suppose
the big thing is that there’s always an innate
homage to William Morris in everything I do.
We recently went to the Jane Austin
Museum. The wallpaper was so bright, it
was not what I expected.
We always think of the Georgian period as
being wonderfully understated and rather
pastel-hued. But no, it was vulgar as hell! If
they could get it bright yellow they certainly
would! But it’s very interesting with wallpaper
because I think it is quintessentially a
British product. It sort of doesn’t really exist
anywhere else. It’s because it’s a very easily
read symbol of the middle class. In France
or Italy or anywhere else where there was
no middle class you would have real silk on
the walls.
You have bedding and wallpaper in the
Signature range is that correct?
We’ve got beds, we’ve got furniture but the
wallpaper I always see as being the flagship
of my style.
Going back to art, what do you think of
our local boy, Banksy?
We actually share an art dealer! It’s very
interesting because I think there is a very
pronounced movement now for art to
become a lot more interesting and a lot
more readable. I think the art of the 80s and
90s, the Brit Art movement, and actually a
lot of late 20th century art was deliberately
over-intellectual. I think a lot of people would
go into a contemporary art gallery and think
‘yeah, okay’. It’s almost that feeling of ‘I can
do that’. But stick them in front of one that
everyone goes crazy for, Leighton’s Flaming
June and you would say ‘Oh my god!’ You
know, that’s one of the best paintings in the
world. And we do love them and I think there
is a real return to a level of craftsmanship. I
mean, Banksy doesn’t really do a lot himself.
He has a huge studio that create these
things. But then, so did Rodin, and so did
Rembrandt. But then you’ve also got people
like Grayson Perry, who I think is very
interesting as well and his work is, unusually,
every bit as interesting as him.
You have a place in Cornwall don’t you?
Do you paint when you go down there?
We have, in Port Issac. But no, I wish! I
tend not to do any work. When we first went
there, a long time ago, I used to do a lot of
landscape work there, and I do love it as
somewhere for inspiration.
Seeking creative
flair with Sopha
Are you seeking a totally new look for
your home or something different to go
with your existing furniture? We all have
our own ideas about what looks good
when it comes to interior design but these
expert fail-safe tips guarantee the wow
factor no matter who walks into the room
or what your style is (or theirs!).
ADVERTISING FEATURE
There are six key components when it comes to creating an
aesthetically pleasing home: space, line of form, light, colour,
texture and pattern. Co-ordinated correctly, they can change
a tired-looking space into something truly stunning. The best
place to start is a focal point, something which grabs everyone’s
attention the moment they walk into the room, such as a picture
at eye level or a statement piece of furniture. From this you can
successfully co-ordinate the rest of the room. If you mix your old
favourites with your new, you’ll refresh the room and give it a look
that never tires. Be sure to think bold when redecorating; artwork
is a great way to start a theme to your room, plus great art gets
better with age, especially when paired with well-chosen paint
colours. The power of paint cannot be understated; a fresh lick
can breathe new life into an old room. Use dark colours to create
a moody atmosphere or make a choice between bright colours
on the walls or splashes of colour on the furniture to liven up a
previously ordinary living space.
Some people have a natural flair for creating a perfect home while
others need an expert they can rely on before making a ghastly
mistake. We offer a service to help you find the confidence to
push the boundaries onto a new level of visual appeal, but most
importantly we work alongside you to do so: you should always
trust your instincts when it comes to interiors; anything you need
to be persuaded to like now isn’t something you’re going to like
later. We’ll help you design the perfect space for you; somewhere
you can relax, unwind, and most of all, enjoy.
Tips for writing a
Will in a second
marriage
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Jane Healey, Partner and Solicitor at
Forrester Sylvester Mackett Solicitors
discusses what to consider when
entering a second marriage...
Nowadays second or third marriages are
commonplace. Not everyone is aware of
the impact they can have on your Will.
When you marry or remarry, your Will
becomes invalid, unless it was made
in contemplation of marriage to your
existing partner. If you do remarry and
fail to update your Will, then potentially
your children would not inherit from your
Estate upon your death.
If you die without a valid Will, The
Intestacy Rules will apply to your Estate.
Your new spouse will inherit any jointly
held assets (such as property, bank
accounts and personal items) and the
first £250,000 of your Estate, and half of
any remainder of your Estate.
Entering into a marriage and failing to
update your Will could leave your children
from a previous relationship with little, or
no inheritance. It Is essential you have
a new Will in place to ensure the people
you want to benefit inherit from your
Estate upon your death. If you were to
die without a valid Will in place, and your
entire Estate passed to your new spouse,
you would have no guarantee that they
would make any financial provision for
your children.
If after your death your current spouse
was to remarry, or fall out with your
children, accumulate debts, or be subject
to care home fees then your children
may be left with no financial provision or
entitlement. In addition, your spouse may
have a new Will prepared after your death
and may elect to make no provision for
your children. Legal advice is essential
in ensuring your children’s inheritance is
protected, whilst also making suitable
provision for your new spouse.
A standard Will may not be appropriate
for the above situations – it may be
preferable to create a trust within your
Will. There are various types of trusts
that you can create within your Will. For
example, you may elect for your spouse
to be permitted to live in your property
for the remainder of their lifetime after
you have died, or if they remarry then
your property, or share in that property,
be distributed to your children. This type
of Will is sometimes referred to as a “Life
Interest Trust Will”, or “Property Trust
Will”, or “Asset Protection Will”. This type
of Will may also be sensible to consider in
relation to preserving your assets, or your
interest in your property from care home
fees, and a trust may also be a suitable
option for trying to ringfence assets and
retain them for your loved ones to inherit
upon your death.
Another consideration which is
sometimes overlooked, is that if you are
experiencing matrimonial issues and
currently divorcing, your spouse may
inherit until the marriage is dissolved
and the Decree Absolute is issued.
Matrimonial finances can take a
considerable amount of time to resolve,
and it is essential that you have a new
Will prepared as soon as possible. There
are also other actions which you need
to take in order to preserve your assets
during this difficult time.
Much media coverage is now paid to
persons who consider it appropriate to
“challenge a Will”; either on grounds
of validity, or making a claim upon
a deceased persons Estate, as no
adequate financial provision has been
made. Unfortunately, they often seek to
remedy this via the Court system, which
can be extremely stressful for all parties,
not to mention expensive.
Do not put your loved ones through
additional stress during bereavement -
make sure you take professional legal
advice.
advice in relation to your position,
Children: getting them
interested in gardening
Here our resident gardener and radio personality, Matt Biggs
aka The People’s Gardener, explains the benefits of getting
children involved in the garden and how it provides them with
skills to help their development.
You and your children will enjoy every stage of the process. We
hear a lot about children not knowing where their food comes from
and, of course, if we don’t give them the info then, with all of the
distractions of modern living, it is not surprising if they think a chip
comes from the freezer aisle and kohlrabi is a character in the latest
Star Wars film!
Gardening for kids is just such a great thing - exercise, knowledge,
fun and hopefully an interest that will last them a lifetime, what more
do we need? Many garden centres offer kids activity days, whether
that is pumpkin carving, seed sowing or making animals out of fruit
and veg. there is a lot you can get them involved with and much of it
is free too. Many garden centres have clubs for children, and this is
a good option if you have one near to you. It is good for socialising
and excellent for learning the basics and having fun.
If you have a garden marking them out their own space is an easy
thing to do. It gives them a sense of responsibility and you can
make a bug hotel out of recycled bits and bobs, plan to grow some
herbs or mini veg, write down their favourite colours and hunt
through plant catalogues or online for suitable plants to match.
There are lots of skills involved in all of these activities, from maths
- how many plants do we need for the space, to practical skills
in making things, to research and planning skills - so one small
space can lead to a lot of learning! If you have a local country
show or fayre there will probably be a few children’s classes in that
too - making a miniature garden or a dinosaur from fruit and veg.
whatever it is take advantage of it - country
shows are a great day out!
So, having got the kids organised it is time
to do our own planning for summer, whether
you have a window box, a court-yard or
acres of space there is summer colour for
every option. If you are fortunate enough to
have a greenhouse then you can start early and bring on your own
plants, you can share with neighbours or garden clubs which is a
very economical way of gardening or you can visit your local nursery
or garden centre to see what choices are available - and there is a
lot of choice.
Every year Chelsea highlights a new favourite plant or colour
scheme, gardening magazines and books have so many ideas
- one of the most pleasurable jobs in the year is planning your
garden - and then - best bit of all, enjoying the fruits of your labour!
tattoo removal treatment in Frome. The
opportunity came up in 2019 and with a bit
of research I managed to put together a set of
treatments to help with various conditions as
well as removing and reducing tattoos...
What types of treatments can you provide?
The main treatments I offer are IPL or SHR hair removal, Tattoo
Removal and Carbon Facials. Other treatments available are
thread vein reduction and age/sun spot reduction.
How do you remove an unwanted Tattoo?
I use a Nd YAG Laser to target the ink. It breaks down the
pigment in the ink and your body absorbs and disposes of it
through natural processes (you basically wee it out with all other
waste!) The process takes time because you’re waiting on your
immune system to help and you would need multiple sessions
set 4-6 weeks apart. As far as how many sessions you would
need – everyone is different! It feels a bit like being flicked with an
elastic band, but it’s not as painful as getting tattooed.
How does SHR actually work?
I use both IPL (Intense Pulse Light) and SHR (Super Hair
Removal) for hair removal, depending on your skin and hair type.
Essentially, the pulse light targets the colour in the hair bulb that
sits below the surface of the skin and the capillaries that feed
the hair. Over a series of sessions, the heat of the light kills the
bulb and what grows back is the short, light, soft hair that grows
on say your cheeks, or the backs of your hands. I use a watercooled
handle which means that the skin does not heat up and is
a pain-free treatment.
Can I book a consultation before booking treatment?
Yes, consultations are free. You can ask any questions and
we can go through some forms to make sure you’re a suitable
candidate. Most people tend to have their consultation and first
treatment at the same time, but there is, of course, no pressure
either way.
Visiting a
care home;
ADVERTISING FEATURE
the a-z
of top
tips
Dementia expert Professor June Andrews
gives us her insightful tips into visiting a
loved one in residential or nursing care...
When someone with dementia moves into
a care home, it is often a great relief for
the family. Many things are immediately
better. You can get an undisturbed night’s
sleep and it’s possible to go out and about
without worrying how your loved one is, and
whether they are safe. But it is not always
so simple. You might worry about whether
the new resident is being looked after
properly, or whether they are fretting and
missing you.
Visiting now becomes an important issue.
How often should you go and for how long,
and what on earth do you do when you are
there? Because people ask me this, I made
an A-Z of visiting ideas an important part
of my new book on care home. Especially
as you know the person you are visiting, I
expect you will be able to think of variations
on this theme.
AAvoid contradicting someone with
dementia, even for clarification.
Bring the newspaper or photos to look at.
Calmly sit and wait. Just being there is
good in itself.
Don’t be louder than needed.
Even if you are in a hurry, don’t appear to
rush.
Find conversation-starters apart from ‘Do
you remember when … ?’ Direct questions
are like a memory test, and uncomfortable.
Give a hug (with permission) or find
appropriate contact like a hand massage.
Have food to share, or go for a
cuppa.
Introduce yourself again every time, even if
you are sure they know you.
Just wait after speaking. To give extra time
for a response, count to ten.
Keep an eye out for tiredness, and offer
sips of water.
Limit the numbers visiting at any one time.
Make an attempt to get outside, if only on a
roof terrace or balcony.
Never forget that the person can read your
body language.
Offer to bring your dog or other pet,
especially if it is calm and affectionate.
Pick their best time of day.
Quick visits are acceptable - what matters
is the quality.
Read out loud.
Sing together.
Try to be in a quiet room.
Understand, if they are rude, that this is not
personal.
Visiting cards or notes let others know that
you called and are good for reminding the
resident that they are loved and respected.
When it is time to go, find a distraction to
cover your departure.
XXX is for kissing - only do it if you used to
do it before.
Young visitors are always popular, and
babies are amazing.
ZZZ is for when they sleep through your
visit; you were there - that matters - so leave
a card. Use the time to relax yourself or talk
to someone else who is lonely.
Z
If just visiting the care home starts to be
hard work for the family, neighbours and
friends can help. It might be hard to make
sure someone is there every day, and you
can work together to fill the gaps. Have fun!
One Stop Guide: When, Why and How to
chantry court
retirement village
We find out about what Chantry Court
Retirement Village has to offer...
What’s it like living in the Village at Chantry Court?
It is often commented that Chantry Court has a very nice
ambiance. The apartments are decorated to a high standard,
are spacious and light with fitted carpet and made to measure
curtains in place. We often furnish apartments so that a
prospective resident can see what it might look like once they get
their furniture in.
Would you say a home from home feeling?
I would say that being a small village it gained a feeling of
“community” very quickly and maintains the same. Very often the
reason for the prospective resident to want to move to Chantry
Court is “needs based” we are a very good second choice for
we are not under any illusion that most people feel there is no
place like their own home, especially when they have lived there
for many years and brought up a family there and have brilliant
neighbours etc.
Tell us more about the facilities at Chantry Court?
Being a smaller village the facilities although very good are
not as extensive as the bigger villages. We do have a fabulous
restaurant which h is open plan leading to a lounge/bar area
which lends itself well to functions which we encourage to be
resident- led, as with organised activities. We as a company like
to arrange a function or an activity once every 4 to 6 weeks. We
have two highly qualified Chefs who make a lot of effort with a
menu which includes 2 choices of 3 course lunch per day. There
is also a breakfast and a supper menu to choose from.
What about care and support?
We have a 24 hour response service whereby if a resident were
to activate their emergency alarm via a pendant or wristband a
member of response staff would come to their aid within a couple
of minutes and offer the support until such times as in some
cases the ambulance arrives or a member of the family, or if it
is just to reassure. In addition to this we have our own in-house
domiciliary team of carers who work exclusively for us and will
carry out pre-arranged visits to residents who have needs. This
can be anything from a 15-minute increment to however long is
needed and however many times a day is required.
Can rent or buy in the village?
We at Chantry Court want to be as flexible as possible when it
comes to a prospective resident moving to the village. We offer a
choice on the majority of our apartments to purchase or rent. We
also give the option to rent on an all-inclusive basis, whereby one
invoice monthly will cover the majority of the costs.
