WESTERN NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday March 17 2020 9 News Supermarket transformed AFTER AN 18-month refurbishment, New World Fendalton has emerged transformed with the completion of the supermarket’s extensive revamp. The upgrade has seen a complete re-design of the building, with the supermarket’s size increasing by 500 sq m. The number of checkouts has boosted along with an expanded range of products on offer. Brothers James and Richard Turner are continuing their family legacy as third-generation owners and operators of New World Fendalton. Said James: “It really has been a team effort, and to see our community enjoy the refurbished store has been incredibly rewarding. It brings together the hard work of so many people.” Other new features include an ecostore refillery and the installation of a new butchery counter. In addition, energy-saving refrigeration and a daylight harvesting system to reduce electricity use has been installed in a bid to reduce the store’s carbon footprint. New World Fendalton has a strong family history. The brothers’ great grandfather Walter Turner immigrated to Christchurch when he was just 14-years-old and secured a job in a local grocery store, and eventually owned the store in 1936. Walter’s son, Jim, affectionately known as ‘Gentleman Jim,’ took over the store in 1961 and had owned it up until his death in 2016. Originally part of Fendalton Mall, the Memorial Ave store had been owned by the Turner family since its opening and up until 1970, it was named Turners Grocers. Said Richard: “Supermarkets have changed a lot since the business opened back in the 1930s. I think changes we have made will ensure we continue to provide a top-class shopping experience for decades to come, just like our grandfathers did before us.” James and Richard are carrying on the family legacy, continuing to be a mainstay of New Zealand’s grocery collective, but also an integral cornerstone of the local western Christchurch community. Empowering women A HAIRDRESSING salon in Hornby has partnered with a charitable organisation to help provide women the confidence to shape their own financial futures. Just Cuts New Zealand launched a partnership with Dress for Success Christchurch to mark International Women’s Day last Sunday. It means Dress for Success clients can now redeem their style cut for $20 which normally cost $32 when presenting a partnership voucher at any Just Cuts in the country. The launch was held last Sunday, outside the Just Cuts salon at The Hub Hornby. Dress for Success aims to provide appropriate clothing, support and career development tools to help women thrive in work and life - it has supported more than 4500 women since 2003. Just Cuts franchise owner Angela Turner said Just Cuts Hornby is proud to be responsible for this initiative which will be rolled out nationwide. “A great Style Cut is so important for self-esteem and confidence, and this voucher for Dress for Success clients will be the icing on the cake, or should I say, their crowning glory,” she said. Mrs Turner’s husband and hairdresser Michael Turner said INITIATIVE: Dress for Success executive manager Ginny Rhodes with Just Cuts mascot Justine Stylecuts and Just Cuts franchise owner Angela Turner. if the initiative goes well in New Zealand, the next step is to take it across to Australia. Mr Turner said they had confirmation from Just Cuts founder, chief executive and franchiser Denis McFadden who wants to push for it as his end. There are more than 200 Just Cuts hair salons in Australia. The event organised by The Hub Hornby shopping centre which has also teamed up with Dress for Success will see quality lightly worn clothing and accessories donated to help women enter the workforce. Customers can take items into sign written lockers at participating retailers with the additional option of including an inspirational note for the recipient.
