In the Garden April 83

Welcome to

our April Issue!

Spring has finally sprung and as

we look forward to brighter days,

our attention turns to outdoor life

which is reflected in much of our

community section this month.

Events to look forward to include the

Norden 3 day Harrier event which is taking

place on 12th, 13th and 14th June, a

Treasure Hunt on 29th March organised

by the Friends of Bamford and of course

Norden Carnival which this year is taking

place on Saturday 20th June.

Hope Menswear and Womenswear are

organising two Fashion Shows on 16th

and 24th April, full details to be found in

our What’s on section on pages 66 and 67.

Local resident Brian Clegg, who has lived

in the Bamford area all his life, has so

many wonderful memories and has kindly

agreed to give us a written tour around

Bamford accompanied with some

fascinating photos.

If you have some time on your hands and

want to earn some money whilst keeping

fit, why not apply to be one of our delivery

team. We are looking for somebody to

cover Norden village and surrounding

areas, take a look on page 58.

Until next month...

This month’s front cover photo of baby bunnies was taken

in Norden by well-known local photographer Terry Angus

who supplies so many of our cover images.

Andy P Collins Wealth Management Limited

It’s amazing the journey

that life takes us on, and

whilst we may travel to

various corners of the

World - home is home.

It’s no surprise then, that

after joining Midland

Bank in Rochdale in the

mid 1970’s I have done

just that.

Andy is widely regarded as a Financial Services

business leader with a demonstrated history of

success at board level. His thirty plus years of

Financial services experience have enabled him to

draw on a wealth of knowledge and skills. During

that time, he has held Head of sales, Director and

Senior management roles with some of the UK’s

leading Banks, First Direct, HSBC Premier, HSBC

International and Brewin Dolphin providing advice

to individual clients, SME’s and Corporates.

Passionate about Financial Planning and Wealth

Management, in 2018 he accepted an invitation

to join the prestigious St. James’s Place Wealth

Management as an Associate Partner Practice

and run his own business. The business has

grown, and we now have the capacity to take on

more new clients with office locations in Rochdale

and Leeds.

“I have found listening to client’s needs and fully

understanding their goals and dreams is the start

point to delivering a bespoke plan.”

Due to my strong emphasis on client focus,

“helping clients to make better financial

decisions”, I build my business predominantly on

introductions both from my private clients, friends,

colleagues and other professional relationships.

Everybody needs a plan, and usually the plan will

change as life will change – we will create and

evolve your plan with you.

Understanding you as an individual will set you on

that path to achieving good outcomes and protect

you from the inevitable bumps along the way.

My role is to listen to what you want, understand

you, educate and share my extensive experience

and together agree your plan. When you go on a

journey you don’t just head off, you plan a route.

Simple or complex, business or personal, it will

reflect you as an individual.

I offer a truly holistic service to existing and new

clients and have access to the St. James’s Place

distinctive approach to investment management

and advice guarantee.

St. James’s Place guarantees the suitability of

the advice given by members of the St. James’s

Place Partnership when recommending any of

the wealth management products and services

available from companies in the Group, more

details of which are set out on the Group’s website

at www.sjp.co.uk/products.

I am locally based and offer planning in the

following areas:

• Preparing for retirement and in-retirement

advice

• Investment planning

• Pension planning

• Protection for you and your family

• Inheritance tax and Inter-generational planning

• Investment planning for children/grandchildren

• Protection for self-employed, company

directors and key people

• Aspects of tax efficient business exit strategies

So, if you’d like to plan or just want a coffee chat,

let’s start the ball rolling

To book an appointment contact me directly

with confidence and no obligation

on 07831 686716 or 01706 525838.

information www.andypcollinswm.co.uk

The Partner Practice is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct

Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the Group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the Group’s website

www.sjp.co.uk/products. The ‘St James’s Place Partnership’ and the title ‘Partner Practice’ are marketing terms used to describe St. James’s Place representatives.

Financial advice made personal

We recognise that talking about money and finances is personal – sometimes sensitive. So it’s reassuring

to know that there’s someone on hand who can help you address your needs, understand your goals and

realise your dreams.

We offer a friendly and approachable service, backed by the strength and security of FTSE 100 company,

St. James’s Place Wealth Management; and being local means we’re here to help whenever you need us.

Let’s start a conversation.

HOPE for Spring

It’s been almost 5 years since HOPE

Womenswear arrived in Norden village, the

shop is constantly evolving with new brands

and styles added each season. Our

customer base has got considerably younger

over those years, making us a destination

store for all age groups.

It is our aim to provide fantastic

product knowledge, in keeping with this

seasons styles and colours, coupled with

amazing customer service. There is never any pressure to buy, you

will always find a relaxed and friendly shopping environment. Your

visit to HOPE Womeswear, whether you’re a new or established

New to the store this season are Scandinavian

brands Sandwich and Part Two. Their ranges

are young, fresh and easy to wear. These new

brands will sit alongside our current brand

mix, ensuring there is something for everyone

at HOPE. You wont find our labels on the high

street, with many of them being exclusive to

HOPE, we only ever have a limited number of

being seen in the same outfit as someone else.

You’ll probably be surprised to know that we

have items starting from as little as £35.

We’d like to also take this opportunity to introduce you

to Rachel, the newest member of our team.

“I am delighted to be a part of HOPE. Its an honour to be

involved in such a well established family run business. I am

eager to learn more about the brands, and my passion is 100%

customer satisfaction. I have received a lovely welcome from the

customers I have already met since starting, and look

forward to meeting more of you over the coming weeks.”

There is always something happening at

HOPE, be it a fashion show or an in store

event. If you wish to know more call in

and leave us your details, or join us on

Facebook Hope Womenswear and Instagram

Friends of Tourcoing Eagerly

Await Visit of their French Families

The Friends of Tourcoing are eagerly

awaiting the bi-annual visit of their

French families. The group from

Tourcoing are due to arrive in Rochdale

on St George’s Day, 23 April and will

stay with their Rochdale families

for four days.

The planned activities will begin with a Beetle

Drive hosted by Caldershaw Primary School

followed by free time to spend with friends and

family. On Friday the group will travel to the

Lakes by coach, train and boat to Windermere

for lunch and some time to explore before

returning to Rochdale.

Saturday is a free day with various shopping trips

and visits to see Dippy arranged by the hosts.

Some of the group may watch Rochdale play at

Spotland in the afternoon so don’t be surprised

if you hear strains of La Marseillaise coming from

the terraces! On Saturday evening there will be

a St George’s themed “Last Night of the Proms”

at Rochdale Sports Centre with a four course

meal and entertainment provided by Rochdale

Wind Band and Mike the DJ.

Rochdale weather is usually cool and wet for the

French visit but in 2018 we were lucky to be in

the middle of a heatwave so we’re hoping for the

same again! We will say farewell to our French

friends on Sunday afternoon following a flag

raising ceremony at the Town Hall.

If you are interested in finding out more

about being part of the Association and the

trips and events we hold whilst our guests

are here please contact the Chair,

Heywood Turns to

Cretaceous Times

If you go down to the park today,

you might be in for a dino surprise.

In celebration of the arrival of Dippy - the world-famous Diplodocus dinosaur

cast in Rochdale from the Natural History Museum, a new dino is lurking near

the lake at Queens Park, Heywood - a T-Rex who currently remains nameless.

Although they lived millions of years apart, the borough is going dinosaur crazy

as the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, along with local councillors

and members from The Friends of Queen’s Park and Heywood in Bloom

officially unveiled the new bog garden on Friday 28 February, which features

the statuesque T-Rex for all to enjoy.

The project has been 12 months in the making with most of the funding

secured was from ‘The Big Life’ with some other smaller donations. It has been

a collaboration by Friends of Queen’s Park and Heywood in Bloom plus labour

by Argos volunteers, with help and support from the Environmental

Management Team at Rochdale Borough Council and the park gardeners.

64

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Visitors to the park can find the bog garden, which has transformed the once

derelict paddling pool situated directly in front of the lake. The site is fully accessible

for prams and wheelchair users, with much more to be added soon. Plans are in

place to add plants that were around when dinosaurs roamed the earth to make

this a real educational point for the park and to attract new wildlife such as

damselflies and dragonflies which still habitat the earth from Jurassic times.

Bog gardens exist naturally in low lying areas or around ponds, streams or lakes.

The permanently waterlogged soil helps to protect the environment by

providing a valuable habitat for a range of animals and insects.

Did you know there are also three other bog gardens across the borough?

Find them at Truffet Park, Middleton, Broadfield Park, Rochdale and Milnrow

Memorial Park, which were all created to celebrate Dippy the dinosaur’s visit

to Rochdale from February to June 2020, as part of his UK tour.

If you are planning on visiting Dippy, pop along to the interactive exhibition

at Touchstones Museum where you can find out how life on planet Earth has

changed since dinosaurs roamed the continents and the challenges we face now.

There are also lots of other free dinosaur-related activities going on for all the

family to enjoy. Take a look at visitrochdale.com for more details.

BRIAN FURNESS – ‘The Whitworth Doctors’

Blacksmith and Farrier John Taylor arrive in Whitworth

around 1764 and, almost immediately, secured a position

at one of the village smithies. Trade was such that

Taylor was quickly able to establish his own business

attending to the needs of working horses and other farm

animals. At that time much of the local employment for

horses and also men involved the heavy and dangerous

work of quarrying; a place where accidents and injuries

were commonplace. Demonstrating an undoubted

skill for setting the broken bones of the injured horses,

locals reasoned that since there was no medical man

of consequence in the village, Taylor should be able to

similarly re-set the broken bones of men. This he did

with much success and acclaim and a transition from

blacksmith/farrier to doctor began.

Going for Gold:

This year it is Rochdale in Bloom’s tenth anniversary and they are

hoping to build on the success of their 2019 entry into North West In

Bloom, where they secured a gold award along with winning ‘The Best

Small City’ title.

The group will be welcoming the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) judges back

to the town this summer, exhibiting some of the best floral and community

features. The judges will be shown around many award winning projects within

the town such as the Rochdale AFC ‘Wonderwall’, Norden Jubilee Park, Moss

Row Allotments, The Growth Project and Springhill Hospice and Edenfield Road

Alleygate Scheme.

Rochdale in Bloom is a community led group, ran by volunteers, and is

continuously growing and improving each year as more and more people from

local communities are becoming involved. The essence of In Bloom is much

more than the end product created, and instead is about

bringing the community together to improve and take

pride in the area we all live in. This is shown through

Rochdale having one of the highest number of

entries into the It’s Your Neighbourhood awards,

an area Rochdale is very successful in each year,

where individuals can

enter their own projects

to be judged.

68 To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

The In Bloom effort is

continuous all year round

and includes many hours

of planning to ensure each

year is bigger and better than the last. Groups of

volunteers are out each week tending displays to

ensure that the projects are up to the ‘gold’ standard.

The entry would not be possible without our growing

number of sponsors on board this year and partners,

who ensure that many In Bloom projects become a

reality and that the exhibits and route are up to a

gold level standard.

There will be many new projects this year

including: The Green Mount Garden Project, the

development of ‘Rochdale’s Racers’ at Cutgate, along

with a floral tribute to the Burma Star Association being

planted in Broadfield Park as a tribute to the soldiers

who fought in World War Two. In Bloom will also have a new flower

bed planted outside Touchstones to celebrate their 10th Birthday. This

year’s RHS theme is ‘Grow Social’ to encourage people to reduce social

isolation, as gardening can bring people together and help people

connect with ourselves and nature.

Paul EllisonThe RHS Britain in Bloom judges will visit Rochdale in July,

with results announced at a special awards ceremony in Southport on

1 November.

Seared Rump of

Lamb Chermoula

SERVES 4

One of my favourite ways of cooking lamb,

the rump is seared in hot oil until the fat has

caramelised, sprinkled with the Chermoula

spices, cooked till pink then served sliced

with a cool crème fraiche. It makes the

most amazing midnight snack rolled up in a

tortilla wrap.

Traditionally the meat is left to marinade in

the Chermoula spices overnight and then

fried but I find it overpowers the delicate

flavours of the lamb, that’s why I opt just to

sear it at the last minute and toast the spices.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

2 tablespoons of olive oil

4 x 160g rump of lamb

2 cloves garlic - crushed

2 teaspoons cayenne

2 teaspoons paprika

2 teaspoons cumin

Zest and juice of ½ lemon

2 tablespoons of coriander-chopped

1 tablespoon of flat leaf

parsley-chopped

1 cucumber cut into spaghetti strips

6 tablespoons crème fraiche

Juice ½ lemon

Few leaves fresh coriander

1. Heat the olive oil, season the rump of lamb and seal

on both sides.

2. Mix together the garlic, cayenne , paprika, cumin,

lemon, coriander and parsley scatter over the lamb

then place in a hot oven 180ºc for 5 minutes or until

cooked to your liking. Leave to rest.

3. Mix together the crème fraiche, lemon and coriander,

season and place in the fridge until the lamb is ready.

4. Blanch The Wild garlic then put straight into

ice water.

5. When ready to serve, arrange

the cucumber spaghetti on a

plate, slice the loin of lamb and

place on top and finally serve

with the lemon, wild garlic

and crème fraiche.

Recollections of Bamford and its Heritage

PART 1

This is the first part of a journey through

the beautiful and peaceful country village

of Bamford; which dates back to the 13th

century; before so called progress took its

toll in the 1950’s/60’s.

In those days by just stepping a matter

of a few hundred yards from your door

you could be in some of the most tranquil

countryside imaginable, the silence only

being rendered more noticeable by the

songs of the many species of birds found in

the fields and hedgerows.

The development began with local farmers

selling their land to developers for them to

build modern houses. This resulted in hills

being flattened, footpath destroyed, mill

lodges drained, streams culverted; and some

of the old cottages and terraced houses

being demolished, many of these houses and

cottages were rented by people who worked

locally.

Bamford Hall from the long drive

In the beginning, Bamford was granted to

Thomas de Bamford by Sir Adam de Bury

in the latter part of the reign of Henry III

(1216 – 1272) for his homage and service.

Thereafter the Bamford estate descended

lineally through the Bamford family until in

1816 it was sold to Joseph Fenton; whose

wealthy local family had been in Bamford

for over 300 years. Historically the original

Bamford Hall was constructed perhaps as

early as the 13th century, with the original

mansion being situated on high ground

above the rocky chasm of Simpson Clough.

The district of Bamford was officially

created on 15th May 1881.

Joseph Fenton, an important figure during

the development of Rochdale’s textile

industry, acquired the Hall in 1816. In 1841

his son James built the new Bamford Hall,

stable block and entrance lodge, and using

its light coloured local stone, and timber

erected a large and handsome modern

house which survived until 1951. The new

19th century house stood near to the site of

original hall that was rebuilt in the time of

Queen Anne (1702 – 1714). This fine new

building; in Tudor style, had a magnificent

front entrance facing towards the main

road, and was approached by a carriage

drive 500 yards in length. Interestingly, it

had an underground ‘ice box’; a brick built

structure, with the entrance to the tunnel

being constructed with red brick walls and

large stones forming the roof. The tunnel

curved to the left and there were two stone

steps down to an egg-shaped ice pit. The ice

house would have been filled in winter with

layers of ice from the halls pond, with its

contents being used throughout the year to

supply the Halls kitchen.

The Fenton’s; who were Bankers at this time

in Rochdale/Heywood, fell on hard times

and the failure of Fenton’s Bank saw the

demise of the Hall from its heyday and it

had to be sold. The Hall was purchased in

1888 by Edward Stocks Massey, a brewer

from Burnley who lived there till 1922,

when David Healey; a local Alderman,

bought the hall and lived there until his

death in 1931. Fred Hall; who worked for

the Co-operative Education Department,

then occupied the Hall until war broke out

in 1939.

Many changes had taken place over the

centuries, but one of the most significant

changes took place in the 1940’s, when;

during the Second World War, the Hall was

used by the Red Cross as a Military Hospital

and Convalescent Home for wounded

service men; many of them from the USA.

They could often be seen walking around

the village in their ‘bright blue uniforms’.

In 1946 Heywood Corporation considered

buying the Hall for use as a maternity

home, but this was abandoned when the

National Health Serviced was formed.

The Corporation later negotiated for the

compulsory purchase of the Hall with its

eleven acres of land, the Hall remained

unoccupied thereafter and fell into disrepair.

However, in 1951 James Berry Ltd; the

Heywood building firm, bought the hall,

demolished it and again using the stone

from it built two new houses; Bamford Hall

and Bamford Old Hall on the site.

Bamford Hall before it was demolished c 1951

Three years later a Mission was formed;

with a Sunday School and evening services,

its dedication to St Michael being adopted

at the time, and in June 1874 the building

of a new school began at the top of Coal Pit

Lane, (which led down to Hooley Bridge;

Queens Park Road did not exist at the time).

The new school opened on Ascension Day,

1875, with St Michael’s and being formed

into a Parish in its own right in March

1881, with the school being licensed as a

temporary church for all spiritual purposes

except marriages and funerals. The site of

the present church was purchased in 1882,

with the foundation stone being laid on

21st June 1884 by the Dean of Manchester;

and it was consecrated in 1885 by the

Bishop of Manchester. The building; of

Gothic style, was completed in April 1885,

seating 502 parishioners. In 1892 an organ

was installed and the flag-floor of the

sanctuary was replaced with a mosaic floor,

electric lighting followed in 1925. In 1920

a memorial cross was dedicated to those

Bamford soldiers who had died in WW1.

When Bury Old Road was widened in the

1970’s there was some loss of church land,

which required a retaining wall to be built

on the south side with the war memorial

being moved to its present position.

St Michaels’ Church 1970’s

Nearby St Michael’s Church and St Michael’s

C. of E. School share a common history; and

these links are very strong to this day. St

Michael’s School came first in 1865, when

Colonel Mellor; a local mill owner, gave up a

building at Gnat Bank; situated at the top of

Sandhole Lane, which they had run for their

work-people and children as a Day School

and Night School. The Vicar of St Luke’s,

Heywood made it into a Church School

with a teacher; and lessons that included

scripture.

journey through Bamford, look out for

Part 2 in the next issue.

MOSs ROW ALlOTMENTS

Hedge work on MoSs Row ALlotments

Since the 1950s Britain has lost many of its hedgerows due to poor

management and various types of development with local areas such

as Norden, Bamford and Cutgate losing their fair share.

A hedgerow acts as a barrier and is planted with a variety of shrubs, being

mainly Hawthorn with varieties such as Blackthorn, Hazel, Holly, Dog Rose

and Guelder Rose.

Hedgerows provide food and shelter for a large variety of small mammals, birds,

insects, butterflies and amphibians. They are more diverse than woodland as the

shrubs are compact growing closely together. The more beneficial hedges for

wildlife are those bordering on woodland. Research shows that a well-managed

hedgerow can substantially absorb Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere.

When Moss Row allotments became

self-managing over 10 years ago, a

hedgerow was planted around the

perimeter of the site. This has matured and

become well established. Two years ago,

a section was layed and this winter the

majority of the remaining hedge has also

been layed. Some sections have been left,

as it is important to leave some habitat for

nesting birds etc. and other small sections

are not mature enough yet. There are areas

which need infill, so saplings have been

requested from the Woodland Trust, to be

planted next autumn. The hedge is layed

so as to thicken the base. The sides will

continue to be trimmed but the height will

be left. In future years when the hedge is

ready the new growth will again be layed

at the new height. The hedge is in an ideal

position for wildlife, as there is woodland

on two sides and water provided by the

pond, found in the adjoining wildlife area

of the Allotments.

76

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Not only are plot holders growing their

own food, but they are working to provide

the best habitat possible for the local

wildlife. The hedge appears a bit sparse

now as it has been reduced significantly

but this is all part of correct hedge

management. This is something that

will be seen and appreciated at its best

by future generations. A legacy for the

children of Norden. Thanks must be given

to Rochdale Township, who, recognising

the value of this environmental project

provided some of the funding towards the hedge maintenance.

Laying the hedge leaves quite a few hedge cuttings so again working in

Partnership with the Countryside Rangers it was arranged that the hedge

cuttings were to be incorporated into the dead hedge in the adjacent Moss

Row Community Woodland. Several plot holders turned out in the rain, on

a working party morning and under the guidance of a Ranger one of the

dead hedges was replenished with the off cuts. The dead hedges provide

an important habitat for small mammals and other creatures as mentioned

above. During the winter they form an ecoclimate providing warmth, shelter

and food. It is a way of using cut off branches and twigs which are woven

together to form the dead hedge. They are not being illegally tipped but

are constructed in a particular way providing the most eco-friendly way

of disposing of them. Moss Row Allotments are proud that they are

contributing to the welfare of local wildlife and re-establishing at least

one of our lost hedgerows.

From The Archives

The river which flows through our

town centre was once one of the

prettiest in the region.

With a ford at the Butts, it was described

in the 17th century by Michael Drayton as

a ‘dainty rill’ populated by minnow, loach

and eels. The water was clear enough in

1868 for people to bathe in although given

the pollution in the air and the poor water

supply at the time, they were risking it!

In fact, there were calls from the mid-19th

century to stop river pollution with human

waste but to little avail even though the

development of a good sewerage scheme

was known to have positive health benefits.

Whilst the Rivers Pollution Acts of 1875

and 1876 outlawed the flow of solid matter

into rivers and required that manufacturing

towns look to sewage disposal schemes to

maintain their cleanliness, the Rochdale

Observer in 1878 was still claiming that

no such affordable scheme had been

implemented and the river was as dirty

as ever.

The Roch, as with so many rivers, was

named after its wildlife. Along with other

rivers such as the Ock (a salmon), the

Laughern (a fox) and the Yarty (a bear!)

which were all formed from Celtic or

British words, the Roch’s name was

testament to the river’s ability to support

fish and supposedly nearby fauna along its

banks. However, by the late 19th century

the Manchester Times commented that

although the river had been named after the

silvery fish, ’it is needless to say that even a

tadpole would hardly think life worth living

amid its poisonous abominations.’

THE RIVER ROCH

The Roch’s first appearance as a spring is

minor and modest, rising as a trickle by

Solomon Cutting on Chelburn Moor south

of Todmorden on the North West side of

Blackstone Edge and near to the source of

the River Calder. From there it meanders

down through Littleborough taking in

small tributaries such as Clegg Hall Brook,

Wuerdle Brook and Greenvale Brook and,

growing in volume, is joined by the Beal at

Belfield (where it got its name) after taking

in Moss and Hey Brooks as well as Stanney

Brook which flows down from Milnrow

via Belfield. Snaking onwards, it passes

under Molesworth Street near the baths and

into the town centre by the new library at

Riverside.

Now 8 miles from its spring, it becomes

Rochdale’s river and has been the location

for many colourful events in the town’s

history. Most people have memories of the

floods of 2015 but in 1856 the Observer

reported the river to have risen three feet,

flooding cellars in The Walk. Accidents

near the river were frequent but none so

dramatic as one in 1820 during a bullbaiting

at the annual town fair. It seems

that a bull, tied to a stake in the river, was

78

To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

being taunted by a crowd standing on the

bank when the river bank collapsed and

a small crowd fell into the Roch. Six men

were killed and many more were seriously

injured.

More happily, as part of the celebrations

for Edward VII, the Prince of Wales’

marriage in 1863 there was a proposal

to erect a fountain in the river just by the

Wellington Hotel, but this came to nothing,

the suggestion being that fireworks would

suffice! Then of course there was the

covering of the river, something that was

proposed to ease the growing volume

of tram traffic in town. The removal of

the Walk footbridge and construction of

Rochdale’s coverage of the river in 1904

was completed in inexpensive Ferro-

Concrete in order to conjoin seven existing

bridges. This was partly to accommodate

a tram terminus in the town. One of the

bridges had its origins in the 14th century

and the single span made it – so Rochdale

people liked to claim – the widest bridge in

the world at just over 1460 feet by joining

up the Wellington Bridge to the (then) new

ornamental bridge at the Esplanade. A

roadway came into being as a result of the

widening. The covering of the river in the

town centre cost £12,000 at the time. 25

tons of pig iron along with traction engines

and a steam roller tested the new bridge’s

strength with 125 tons, a weight which it

easily withstood.

Flowing past Touchstones, the river picks

up the River Spodden coming down from

Whitworth then widens under Roch Valley

Way taking in Sudden Brook and Naden

Brook which had flowed down from Norden

to meet the Roch north of Heywood.

Flowing by Heywood and Bury, the Roch

eventually meets the River Irwell east of

Radcliffe at Blackford Bridge. Thereafter

the Irwell takes the water to Salford,

Manchester and into the Ship Canal, the

Mersey and ultimately the Irish Sea.

The river in the town centre is now partially

revealed of course and notwithstanding

the need to keep it litter-free, it is attracting

wild life again and leisure activities. After

heavy rain those carrying their canoes

around dangerous weirs are launching

near to Roch Valley Way and paddling

happily between Rochdale and Bury. Otters,

according to the Observer in 2011 are on

the increase and anglers holding the right

licenses are catching brown trout and five

pound chub as near to the town centre as

by Asda. In July 2018 a fawn was spotted

in the river between the Police Station and

Touchstones. Let’s hope that the river stays

clean for Rochdalians so that from now

onwards we can enjoy its waters and the

town’s wildlife.

If you have any comments about the River Roch I’d be delighted to hear

from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.

Peregrine Falcons

at Rochdale Town Hall

Nature lovers elated as

falcon camera returns

The council’s popular live webcam, which

provides a spectacular eagle-eyed view of

the peregrine falcons nesting at Rochdale

Town Hall, is back.

Over the next few months thousands of

people will avidly follow the lives of the

falcons that live at the top of the Grade

I-listed building.

Fantastic footage is live-streamed to

a specially designed council webpage,

providing iconic images from the nesting

area.

Nature lovers from across the world enjoy

following the dramatic fortunes of the

birds, with webcam views from Australia,

Canada and the United States amongst

others.

Once again a ‘name the chick’ competition

will be held after the youngsters hatch,

with an exciting new theme to be

announced shortly.

Falcons have nested at the town hall for

more than a decade and are regularly seen

soaring above the town centre as they

hunt for food.

In 2018, the council’s award-winning

Revealing the Roch project was praised

for renaturalisng the river and helping to

bring a range of wildlife back to Rochdale

town centre.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member

for neighbourhoods, said: “We are very

proud of our falcons’ webcam which has

become a much loved part of borough

life. Over the years the audience has

really taken off, as nature lovers enjoy

all the action from the nesting area. The

birds have made Rochdale’s most famous

building their home and it attracts interest

and positive comments from far and wide.

Let’s hope for plenty of thrills, but not

many spills, over the coming months, with

an exciting chick naming competition set

to spark added interest.”

peregrine falcons at Rochdale

Streetwise Magazine

CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO ADVERTISE?

Advertisers in Streetwise benefit from a layout which is interspersed with community features,

transforming what would otherwise be simply a directory of businesses and either left in the

magazine rack or thrown away each month, into a very readable magazine and handy guide

for everyone.

Bury Choral Society has many members from the Rochdale area (and welcomes more) and

is proud to be involved with Kate and Becky at Streetwise. They allow us to promote all our

forthcoming concerts for free in the What’s On feature each month and it works as confirmed

by many members of the audience who have seen the information in Streetwise.

Bury Choral Society is delighted to recommend Streetwise to advertisers and readers.

Good luck to Kate and Becky and thank you for an informative magazine under your

cheerful management. Thank you also to your teams of distributors who deliver in all

weathers! May you go from strength to strength.

June Bowker, Bury Choral Society

I have been advertising my joinery business in Streetwise Milnrow/Newhey for many years and

as I live in the area it generates local work for me and means that I don’t have to travel too far

to each job. I have recently decided to increase my advertising to include the other three

Streetwise magazines in Bamford/Norden, Heywood/Hopwood and Shawclough

and one of the incentives for doing this was that I will now receive a bigger

As a new business in Bamford, I have measured the success of

my advertising in Streetwise by using a different promotional code

each month. As a result, I know that the advert has worked and last

month saw many new customers coming into the shop and taking

advantage of the ‘GET £5 OFF’ which appeared in the February issue.

Kate and Becky were so helpful in arranging the design of my advert

which looks professional and can be easily tweaked each month

with new offers.

Advertising my business in Streetwise

has helped to increase my brand

awareness and to establish trust

with my customers who see the

advert in each of the four Streetwise

magazines month after month. The

adverts have also helped to establish

my online presence. As far as I’m

concerned, it’s money well spent,

and the return is far greater than

leaflet drops which tend to be thrown

away once they drop through

the letterbox.

Unlike other A5 magazines with page after page

FRIENDS OF HOPWOOD PARK

Delighted to

Receive RHSD

Gold Medal Award

Following ten years of hard work, the Friends

of Hopwood Park were delighted to receive

an RHS Gold Medal Award, they were

particularly proud to also receive the RHS

National Certificate of Distinction for Parks.

Both awards were presented in Southport at

the North West In Bloom Awards Day. I would

like to thank all our volunteers over the years,

individuals, local businesses and grant

providers who have been involved in any way

since the Friends Group started.

Initially we were a small group of mums

with a goal of improving our neglected local

green space for our children and the local

community; to bring it back into use for the

purpose which was intended some 100 years

ago. Hopwood Park has now bloomed into an

attractive recreational space for all.

As an added benefit, the surrounding

community has also bloomed. Hopwood

Park, with the recent addition of The Tree

House Community Cafe is now a hub of the

local community where people go to relax,

meet friends or exercise.
