STREETWISE MAGAZINE

Welcome to

our April issue

Spring has finally sprung and

as we look forward to brighter

days, our attention turns to

outdoor life which is reflected

in much of our community

section this month.

Events to look forward to include the

Norden 3 day Harrier event which is

taking place on the 12th, 13th and

14th June and the Milnrow and

Newhey Carnival which is taking place

on Saturday 20th June.

Local historian, Gary Heywood-Everett,

has yet again written another

fascinating article all about the River

Roch which you can find on pages 44

and 45. We have another recipe from

your local WI to keep you busy in the

kitchen on page 48.

Until next month…

“Both Becky and Kate are extremely

helpful and accommodating and

nothing is too much trouble. Even

though we only provide them with

basic information each month, along

with their designer they never fail to

create fantastic eye catching adverts.

Over the past few months these have

really helped to promote our events

and the facilities of the Club to

a much wider audience within the

Milnrow and Newhey area.”

A DATE NOT TO BE MISSED

MILNROW & NEWHEY CARNIVAL 2020

SATURDAY 20TH JUNE

Excitement is mounting throughout

the borough in anticipation of the

Milnrow & Newhey Carnival and

Summer Fete set for Saturday

20th June 2020.

The event is enjoyed by many people each

year, who line the streets to watch the parade

and attend the summer fete afterwards at

Milnrow Memorial Park.

The carnival committee aim to maintain

tradition, contributing their time voluntarily to

organise a village carnival, which is now in it’s

52nd year. The event brings together the local

community with a procession from Newhey to

Milnrow and is followed by a fete with stalls

and activities. We encourage Rochdale’s

residents to participate, by promoting the

event in the months preceding each year’s

summer carnival. Local groups can make their

presence known and relationships are forged.

36 To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Children and adults alike dress in fancy-dress and

a fun day is had by all. The event is promoted

throughout the local press and online and

projects a positive image of Rochdale from within.

This year the committee are delighted to

announce the proceeds from the street collection

this year will be for Rochdale Foodbank, Springhill

Hospice and Rochdale Heartbeat.

Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade with

local schools are once again supporting the event

along with pre-schools and many local groups

with a number of exciting new entries.

Entry is free to the park where there will be

live music, a funfair for all ages, paintball, face

painting and a variety of stalls and hot and cold

food. Live music will be provided by New Identity,

which is a five piece local iconic pop party band

covering hits from Duran Duran, Spandu Ballet,

Barry White, Robbie Williams, Bruno Mars plus

more. Not to be missed!

If anyone would like to enter the parade,

have a stall at the park or would like

more information regarding the event,

please contact the Carnival Secretary

on 07786 850266 or email

milnrowcarnival@yahoo.com.

The theme will be ‘Christmas in June

so let’s go crazy!’ Come along and

enjoy the fun!

ROCHDALE HARRIERS & AC

NORDEN 3-DAY EVENT 2020

FRIDAY – SUNDAY 12TH, 13TH, 14TH JUNE

The 26th Rochdale Harriers Norden 3-Day Event will take place over the weekend

of 12th to 14th June 2020. The event which is organised by Rochdale Harriers

& AC, is a series of running races, with a road race on the Friday evening, a

multi-terrain trail race on the Saturday morning and a fell race on the Sunday

morning. The event has taken place in Norden every year since 1994, with the

exception of 2001 due to Foot and Mouth disease.

The event generates approximately 500 visits to the village including competitors and

their supporters and families, across the three days. With those visits generating sales

for local businesses, particularly in relation to food and drink.

All races are licensed and insured through UK Athletics and operated in accordance with

relevant UK Athletics and Fell Runners Association guidance and best practice. The races

will also operate in accordance with Rochdale Council’s event management procedures

and approved by the Council’s Safety Action Group.

Where any part of a race route passes over private land, even if that land has a public

right of access, agreement has been reached with that landowner to allow the race to

take place on that land. Furthermore, other users will be notified and reasonable

measures taken to mitigate the potential impact on the races on other users of footpaths,

bridleways, roads etc.

Heywood Turns to

Cretaceous Times

If you go down to the park today,

you might be in for a dino surprise.

In celebration of the arrival of Dippy - the world-famous Diplodocus dinosaur

cast in Rochdale from the Natural History Museum, a new dino is lurking near

the lake at Queens Park, Heywood - a T-Rex who currently remains nameless.

Although they lived millions of years apart, the borough is going dinosaur crazy

as the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Billy Sheerin, along with local councillors

and members from The Friends of Queen’s Park and Heywood in Bloom

officially unveiled the new bog garden on Friday 28 February, which features

the statuesque T-Rex for all to enjoy.

The project has been 12 months in the making with most of the funding

secured was from ‘The Big Life’ with some other smaller donations. It has been

a collaboration by Friends of Queen’s Park and Heywood in Bloom plus labour

by Argos volunteers, with help and support from the Environmental

Management Team at Rochdale Borough Council and the park gardeners.

Visitors to the park can find the bog garden, which has transformed the once

derelict paddling pool situated directly in front of the lake. The site is fully accessible

for prams and wheelchair users, with much more to be added soon. Plans are in

place to add plants that were around when dinosaurs roamed the earth to make

this a real educational point for the park and to attract new wildlife such as

damselflies and dragonflies which still habitat the earth from Jurassic times.

Bog gardens exist naturally in low lying areas or around ponds, streams or lakes.

The permanently waterlogged soil helps to protect the environment by

providing a valuable habitat for a range of animals and insects.

Did you know there are also three other bog gardens across the borough?

Find them at Truffet Park, Middleton, Broadfield Park, Rochdale and Milnrow

Memorial Park, which were all created to celebrate Dippy the dinosaur’s visit

to Rochdale from February to June 2020, as part of his UK tour.

If you are planning on visiting Dippy, pop along to the interactive exhibition

at Touchstones Museum where you can find out how life on planet Earth has

changed since dinosaurs roamed the continents and the challenges we face now.

There are also lots of other free dinosaur-related activities going on for all the

family to enjoy. Take a look at visitrochdale.com for more details.

From The Archives

The river which flows through our

town centre was once one of the

prettiest in the region.

With a ford at the Butts, it was described

in the 17th century by Michael Drayton as

a ‘dainty rill’ populated by minnow, loach

and eels. The water was clear enough in

1868 for people to bathe in although given

the pollution in the air and the poor water

supply at the time, they were risking it!

In fact, there were calls from the mid-19th

century to stop river pollution with human

waste but to little avail even though the

development of a good sewerage scheme

was known to have positive health benefits.

Whilst the Rivers Pollution Acts of 1875

and 1876 outlawed the flow of solid matter

into rivers and required that manufacturing

towns look to sewage disposal schemes to

maintain their cleanliness, the Rochdale

Observer in 1878 was still claiming that

no such affordable scheme had been

implemented and the river was as dirty

as ever.

The Roch, as with so many rivers, was

named after its wildlife. Along with other

rivers such as the Ock (a salmon), the

Laughern (a fox) and the Yarty (a bear!)

which were all formed from Celtic or

British words, the Roch’s name was

testament to the river’s ability to support

fish and supposedly nearby fauna along its

banks. However, by the late 19th century

the Manchester Times commented that

although the river had been named after the

silvery fish, ’it is needless to say that even a

tadpole would hardly think life worth living

amid its poisonous abominations.’

THE RIVER ROCH

The Roch’s first appearance as a spring is

minor and modest, rising as a trickle by

Solomon Cutting on Chelburn Moor south

of Todmorden on the North West side of

Blackstone Edge and near to the source of

the River Calder. From there it meanders

down through Littleborough taking in

small tributaries such as Clegg Hall Brook,

Wuerdle Brook and Greenvale Brook and,

growing in volume, is joined by the Beal at

Belfield (where it got its name) after taking

in Moss and Hey Brooks as well as Stanney

Brook which flows down from Milnrow

via Belfield. Snaking onwards, it passes

under Molesworth Street near the baths and

into the town centre by the new library at

Riverside.

Now 8 miles from its spring, it becomes

Rochdale’s river and has been the location

for many colourful events in the town’s

history. Most people have memories of the

floods of 2015 but in 1856 the Observer

reported the river to have risen three feet,

flooding cellars in The Walk. Accidents

near the river were frequent but none so

dramatic as one in 1820 during a bullbaiting

at the annual town fair. It seems

that a bull, tied to a stake in the river, was

44

being taunted by a crowd standing on the

bank when the river bank collapsed and

a small crowd fell into the Roch. Six men

were killed and many more were seriously

injured.

More happily, as part of the celebrations

for Edward VII, the Prince of Wales’

marriage in 1863 there was a proposal

to erect a fountain in the river just by the

Wellington Hotel, but this came to nothing,

the suggestion being that fireworks would

suffice! Then of course there was the

covering of the river, something that was

proposed to ease the growing volume

of tram traffic in town. The removal of

the Walk footbridge and construction of

Rochdale’s coverage of the river in 1904

was completed in inexpensive Ferro-

Concrete in order to conjoin seven existing

bridges. This was partly to accommodate

a tram terminus in the town. One of the

bridges had its origins in the 14th century

and the single span made it – so Rochdale

people liked to claim – the widest bridge in

the world at just over 1460 feet by joining

up the Wellington Bridge to the (then) new

ornamental bridge at the Esplanade. A

roadway came into being as a result of the

widening. The covering of the river in the

town centre cost £12,000 at the time. 25

tons of pig iron along with traction engines

and a steam roller tested the new bridge’s

strength with 125 tons, a weight which it

easily withstood.

Flowing past Touchstones, the river picks

up the River Spodden coming down from

Whitworth then widens under Roch Valley

Way taking in Sudden Brook and Naden

Brook which had flowed down from Norden

to meet the Roch north of Heywood.

Flowing by Heywood and Bury, the Roch

eventually meets the River Irwell east of

Radcliffe at Blackford Bridge. Thereafter

the Irwell takes the water to Salford,

Manchester and into the Ship Canal, the

Mersey and ultimately the Irish Sea.

The river in the town centre is now partially

revealed of course and notwithstanding

the need to keep it litter-free, it is attracting

wild life again and leisure activities. After

heavy rain those carrying their canoes

around dangerous weirs are launching

near to Roch Valley Way and paddling

happily between Rochdale and Bury. Otters,

according to the Observer in 2011 are on

the increase and anglers holding the right

licenses are catching brown trout and five

pound chub as near to the town centre as

by Asda. In July 2018 a fawn was spotted

in the river between the Police Station and

Touchstones. Let’s hope that the river stays

clean for Rochdalians so that from now

onwards we can enjoy its waters and the

town’s wildlife.

If you have any comments about the River Roch I’d be delighted to hear

from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.

Milnrow Library Walking Group

A wet weather walk was called for

recently after the stormy weather left

many of our regular footpaths and

routes very muddy and slippery. We

walked to Dunwood Park and back.

Leaving Milnrow Library turn left to walk under

the motorway bridge and then left again into

Milnrow Memorial Park, following the footpath

uphill and past the front of the War Memorial,

continuing onto the gravelled path, part of the

Woodland Walk and out of the park turning right,

onto Church Lane. (over Bradley)

Turn left and continue along the footpath, towards

Shaw, until you reach the entry to the Level

Crossing which allows you to cross over the tram

track - taking care to check both ways to make

sure it is safe to cross. Then turn right.

Follow the lane past St. Thomas’s Church and

down the hill, then go down the steps that run

down the side of the School. At the bottom of the

steps cross Huddersfield Rd and continue along

Railway St, near the end of Railway St the road

narrows to a footpath, as it crosses Piethorne

Brook, continue over the bridge then turn right

onto Two Bridges Road. Walk along the footpath

and over the Tramline bridge before crossing

the road and walking through the Two Bridges

industrial development and coming out onto

Milnrow Rd.

This brings you into the Jubilee Mine Nature

Reserve where you can see some of the

remains of the mine and brickworks. As you walk

through here you are likely to meet some of the

volunteers working to keep the area in good

repair for the future generations to visit.

The end of this part of the route brings you out

by the former Jubilee Pub. Cross the road here

and go to your right over the bridge to turn left

down the cobbled passageway at the side of

Jubilee Terrace and enter Dunwood Park.

46 To advertise call 07976 289967 or 07974 434793 or email sales@streetwisemag.co.uk

Follow the path through the park, passing the

climbing stones and grassy semicircle, until the

path divides.

At this point bear right along the path and exit

the park onto Woodside using the stile. Bearing

left continue down the cobbled road passing the

bowling greens and turning left go through the

carpark to re-enter the park, on your left.

Follow this path all the way back through the park

and back out onto Milnrow Rd.

At this point you will need to cross the road and

now have two option for your return to Milnrow

Library.

Turn right and return back through the Jubilee

workings then crossing the tram lines to walk

along the road through Newhey, crossing the

bottom of Huddersfield Rd at the lights and

continuing on into Milnrow and back to the library.

Turning left walk along the foot path until you

reach the industrial estate and retrace your steps

through there, up Two Bridges Rd and along

Railway St to cross Huddersfield Rd and climb

the steps up past the school and church to return

back through the Park to the Library.

This is an easy walk which covers 4.5 miles and

can be completed in approximately 1 hour 45

minutes.

Returning to the Library many of our group enjoy

a relaxing cuppa and biscuit while chatting with

their friends and comparing walks with those who

have chosen to do an alternative route.

Several of the group have recently started taking

advantage of the table games that are provided

by the Library and now bring a sandwich to

eat whilst enjoying challenging each other and

members of the public with the various games

that are available.

There are some of our walkers have experienced

various health problems which have stopped

them from taking part in the walks but they still

come along to enjoy a cuppa, socialise and to join

in playing table games with their friends.

OUR GROUP

If you suffer from social isolation, or you feel the need to exercise more and meet

new friends, come along to our Monday morning walking group at Milnrow Library.

We meet from 9.30am leaving out at 10am for walks in the local countryside.

Wear suitable walking shoes and clothing dependant on the weather.

Walks are led by volunteer walk leaders and are free.
