Try to committo five deep cleansing breathsin through your nose and outthrough your mouth.I like Dr. Weil’s “4-7-8” technique,which entails breathingin to a count of four, holding forseven seconds, then exhalingfor eight counts. This maybe practicing some self care, sittingdown with your children totalk about their day at school orconnecting with your husbandor wife over dinner. Be intentionalby focusing on what mattersmost.Take a screen break:Chances are high thatyou’re looking at a computerscreen or cell phone frequentlythroughout the day. Take abreak from the screens and letyour mind and eyes rest.Studies show that the bluelight emitted from these devicescan disrupt sleep and cause daytimetiredness, so this is a primeopportunity to start downshiftingthe devices.Move your body:Find a way to move your bodyin some way to get the feelgoodhappiness and pleasurehormone, Dopamine, flowing.Not only will some form of exercisedecrease your stress fromthe day at work, it also protectsyou from long term stress.I know what you’re probablythinking, “I have no time” or“I’m too tired.” I totally get it,but commit to something thatseems doable, even for just 1minute. Try 30 jumping jacks,or 20 squats, 20 pushups and 20crunches, a one minute plank,or dance to your favorite music(plus you can recruit your kids,too.) Unfortunately, onevital planning strategy is rarelyincluded on those “to do” lists.That strategy is to get your legalaffairs in order.It is especially important forseniors to create a roadmapfor “what if” scenarios in thefuture, whether that may beCoronavirus or any other unexpectedevent.If you cannot make yourown healthcare decisions andyou have not done your legalplanning, or the planning youhave is outdated or inadequate,your loved ones will beforced to pursue a probate courtguardianship.Waiting for the court to act,however, could impact youraccess to medical treatmentor even your right to participatein available drug trials.Any unusual health decisionswould require special courtoversight and any objectingfamily member can grind theprocess to a halt. Moreover,going to court will be expensiveand stressful for yourloved ones – why put themthrough that?Instead, sign a Health CareProxy while you are well.Also, sign a Health InformationProtection Act Authorizationand Release so your decisionmakers have ready accessto your medical records andinformation.Consider signing a LivingWill to clarify your end-of-lifedecision making wishes. Thiscan protect you against familymembers who want to overrulethe Health Care Proxy becausethey think they understand yourwishes better.We set clients up with anemergency medical identificationcard to carry in their walletor purse. First responders andmedical institutions can easilyaccess their healthcare directivesthrough the card any timeof day, anywhere in the world.This ensures that in an emergency,your appointed agent– not a stranger – is the personcalling the shots on your behalf.You also have to plan aheadfor the management of yourfinancial affairs. No one willhave authority to pay your bills,access your IRA or 401(k), ordeal with your real estate unlessyou give them clear authorityto do so in a Durable Power ofAttorney (POA).Beware that most POAs failto include all the necessaryauthority to shield and protectyour nest egg if you requirelong-term care, or to minimizeestate taxes if you have a taxableestate. To get your POAdone right, be sure that yourattorney deals regularly withasset protection planning and/orestate tax planning.If you have no POA or yourPOA is inadequate, your lovedones will be forced to pursue acostly, stressful Probate Courtconservatorship.This is also an opportunityfor you to check the beneficiarieson your life insurance,annuities, and other financialaccounts and assets, as thosebeneficiaries may not reflectyour current wishes. Notethat your Will or other estateplanning documents will notoverride your beneficiary designationson these financialproducts.Everyone should have a willso that upon your death, you –not the Commonwealth – determinewhere your assets pass.For many families, a trust mayoffer additional planning opportunitiesand protections.Several local colleges haveclosed campuses, many concertsand large gatherings havebeen cancelled, and “socialdistancing” is becoming thenew norm. For those who areanxious about visiting an attorney’soffice, a good attorneyshould be able to help you domuch of the planning throughtelephone or video conferenceson your mobile phone.Even an estate plan signingcan be conducted with strategicpreparations to minimizerisks.
