the
editor’s note
Photograph by Elizabeth Pettey
As a person who genuinely dislikes winter, I’m
always happy to see the first signs of spring. The
time change and longer days are a welcome
reminder that the warm weather months are on
their way. I’m always excited to see the robins
hopping around my front yard. Spending time
outdoors, without a coat (or at least without snow
pants), helps me to shake off the winter woes.
Usually, at this time of year, I would be excited about
the future, but for me, the coming weeks hold more
anxiety than excitement. I sat down many times
to write this note, each time getting distracted by
the news coverage of the virus that is so quickly
permeating our communities. My editor’s note is
usually a lighthearted piece introducing each new
magazine issue. Right now, it felt disingenuous to
write you a cheerful spring message when I, like
so many of you, am practicing social distancing
with my new “co-workers” (pictured to the left) at
home.
We want to support small brands &
businesses at this time. Connect with us
@posterchildmag and nominate a brand
who could use an extra boost.
So, I’m not going to pretend to be excited for the
coming weeks. Instead, I’m offering our new spring
issue to you as a much-needed distraction. I hope
you take the time to glance at these pages and
feel inspired, read some of our articles and take
a short break from the worry. I hope that, if even
for just a few minutes, you can find a moment of
normalcy and comfort.
Let’s Play
We believe dressing kids is
all about having fun! But sometimes kids and parents feel overwhelmed
when it comes to creating a perfect outfit. Last summer, we took the
opportunity to style and shoot some cute looks at one of our favourite places
to discover new trends: Playtime New York. The multi-level tradeshow brings
together the best kids fashion and lifestyle brands under one roof. This
makes it one of our favourite destinations!
To help take the guesswork out of styling the perfect spring looks, we are
sharing just a few tips to inspire you to get creative and play with fashion!
Keep it primary
Head back to primary school for this first tip.
Do you remember the colour wheel? If your
kids have a difficult time pairing outfits, they
can never go wrong with red, yellow and blue.
Little ones can wear all three shades together,
pair their favourite two or even try a tone on
tone look. These are all great options that are
bright, fun and allow kids to get creative with
dressing!
make a statement
Building a wardrobe of great basics makes it
easy to integrate statement pieces into the same
closet. A comment we hear often is “I love this
print, but I have nothing to go with it!”
Don’t overthink it; pair a basic tee with a vibrant
bottom or layer neutral tones under a statement
jacket. This allows the statement piece to really
make an impact!
easy layers
To get the most out of the warm weather pieces in your little
one’s closet, you’ll want to incorporate layering into your
everyday looks. When the weather is too chilly to wear that
cute tank top dress, adding a short sleeve tee underneath
adds just enough warmth to make the look seasonally appropriate.
Similarly, light jackets, sweaters and even a button-up
dress or shirt layered over an outfit can add extra comfort
and style!
Pattern Play
Kids have a unique ability to pull off looks that
their adult counterparts would rarely attempt!
While more adventurous grown ups may mix
and match prints, patterns and colours, kids
can really take this trend to the next level! To
make getting dressed in the morning easier,
lay out a few different pattern options you like
- tops and bottoms - and see what your child
gravitates toward. Independent kids will love
standing out and wearing what they decided
on rather than what mom or dad laid out for
them.
Accessorize
Possibly the best part of any outfit are the
accessories! A cute bag or stylish hat adds
fun and function, elevating even the simplest
looks. A black dress takes on a new life when
you add this cute bunny belt! Fruity and flowery
bags add whimsy to an outfit, while vibrant
bags can bring a pop of bold colour. Kids love
adding accessories to their outfits so provide
lots of options and just sit back and watch
their creativity.
Pitti Bimbo 90
Runway recap!
Of the many events Pitti Bimbo hosts each season, the fashion
shows are by far our favourites! There is nothing quite like watching
garments come to life on the runway to make us feel so inspired.
Earlier this year, Pitti Bimbo celebrated its 90th edition and brands
brought their A-game to the catwalk to celebrate!
Kicking off the presentations was a new collection
by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac for United
Colors of Benetton. 65 Benetton Street was the
setting for the brand’s first live runway show at
Pitti Bimbo, and young citizens that rocked the
runway sported Benetton’s historic colours and
sportswear aesthetic. Street style and street art
took centre stage throughout the collection
24
with garments boasting embellishments by
artist Keith Haring. Stars, stripes and heritage
prints were staples throughout the line and
underscored the spirit of the brand. Children
are vocal about their desire for independence
and freedom; Benetton offered up a collection
that allows kids to experience and see the world
through new fashion technologies.
Monnalisa invited us under
the big top to present their
latest collection for AW20.
Circus performers amazed
onlookers with spectacular
tricks while models and their
matching mommas took
to the runway. For casual
everyday style, Monnalisa
has injected their new
collection with favourite
characters we know and love
like Mickey Mouse, Alice
and Popeye. The winter
collection is full of elegance
and cheerfulness, the perfect
balance of classical romance
and edgy style! For extra
special occasions, you’ll find
Couture dresses and tailored
tuxedo styles for both girls
and boys.
Finally, the Apartment
fashion show highlighted
the most sophisticated and
exclusive collections of the
Pitti Bimbo 90 fair with the
backdrop of an adorable
little town. Featuring brands
such as Amelie et Sophie,
Paade, Raspberry Plum,
Velveteen and more, the
Apartment show is known
for its sartorial sensibilities.
This season, we were excited
by the mix of textures and
rich earthy tones displayed
on the runway, emboldened
with pops of pink, orange
and teals.
Designer Q&A
ROCK YOUR
BABY
Australian children’s brand Rock Your Baby reimagines the best fashion trends
of the past decades and gives them rock n’ roll flare with miniature sensibility.
Discover the brand and our favourite styles from their collection!
26
Australian fashion brand Rock Your Baby began in
the summer of 2003 and the Sydney-based sisters,
Caroline & Johanne, who launched the collection,
have been the driving force behind its success ever
since. With the mission to capture and enhance the
fun, innocence and imagination of childhood, Rock
Your Baby ensures little ones are ready to rock by
offering high-quality clothes for all children! From
heavy-metal tees fit for the littlest rockstar to frilly
unicorn tutus, each Rock Your Baby collection is
filled with unconventional, yet ultra-cool styles for
babies and kids.
Each season, the brand collaborates with artists who
embody the Rock Your Baby vibe while bringing
their creativity to the line. Each new collection
is fresh, unique and, most importantly, original!
Trendy off-beat fashions by Rock Your Baby help
kids tap into their innate fashion sense from an early
age and celebrate it!
Want to learn more about Rock Your Baby and their
unique take on children’s fashion? Keep reading our
Q&A below.
Designer Q&A
What inspired the name of your label?
The label was started in 2003, and we had many working
names before settling on Rock Your Baby. George
McCrae released a song called Rock Your Baby in the
70s, which was where we got the name from. Rock Your
Baby was also a play on “Rock n Roll,” and we felt that
it paid homage to popular culture as a whole, which has
always been the biggest influencer for our designs.
What made you want to design for children?
My sister, Johanne and I started the business, and
we still own and operate Rock Your Baby to this day.
My first daughter was born in 2000, and she was the
original inspiration for the brand. We started making
baby t-shirts for her and people would literally stop us
in the street to ask where we got it from. After our next
babies were born in 2001 and 2002, we decided to
sell our designs at Bondi Beach Markets. The pleasure
people got from our designs was very inspiring to us
and spurred us on to develop and expand the business.
Designing for infants and children is just so much
fun. We both still really enjoy it, and it has become a
real passion in our lives. Seeing children enjoying our
clothes still takes our breath away, and the joy and level
of satisfaction we get from our work have not subsided
at all.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
We believe that kids have their own innate sense of
fashion and style. To this end, we design the kinds of
clothes that kids want to wear - clothes that both capture
and enhance the fun, innocence and imagination of
childhood.
At Rock Your Baby we deliver wearable mini art
collections and, in doing so, make good design a part of
children’s everyday lives. Our collections celebrate the
richness of popular visual culture and make the act of
dressing your child the fun and pleasurable experience
we think it should be.
28
Designer Q&A
30
What are the motivations or inspirations behind
the designs? We collaborate with artists and fabric
designers from around the world. We will focus on
particular prints or patterns that we love and build
a story around these. This season we did a mini
capsule with vintage prints from the 1960s and
70s and incorporated vintage inspired 1970s art
posters for tees and sweatshirts.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
When we start designing a new collection, we are
constantly taking cues from the past and reinventing
them to set new trends for today. The 1960s was
a very eclectic decade for fashion, and we draw
heavily on this era for its mixture of hippie, rock n’
roll and mod influences. The hippie influence rolled
over into the 1970s, which also saw the emergence
of the punk and disco era as people continued
to experiment with fashion as a means of selfexpression.
1970s London was all about Biba, and
their style has always been something we love to
reference when designing. We offer mod cut jeans,
cord flares, Vivian “Westwoodesque” tartan prints
and bold leopard prints in almost every range we
design.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
Rock Your Baby is well known for its brightly printed
full circle waisted dresses and circus tutu dresses.
These have been a staple in our ranges for many
years and are very popular with both parents and
children alike. We also are known for our edgy
t-shirts, which draw on rock n roll and counter
culture.
How does your design philosophy change when
creating for boys vs girls? We don’t have a
philosophy per se that distinguishes our approach
to designing boys vs girls. There are pieces that
are obviously tailored to the girl’s market; however,
many pieces in our range can be worn by both girls
and boys.
Designer Q&A
What do you have coming up that you are really excited
about? There are lots of things coming up that we are very
excited about. We are launching new ranges in the Northern
and Southern Hemispheres. We have used a lot of metallics
in the range for girls including skirts and dresses. For the
boys, there is a mixture of rock n’ roll and skate-inspired
tees and bottoms, which are fashion-forward and easy to
wear.
We have successfully collaborated with Disney for the last
two years, and we have now secured licenses for one of the
most popular soft toy ranges of the 1980s. Designing these
types of ranges is always a lot of fun!
What is your favourite item from the current collection?
The current collection is so strong it is really hard to pick
to favourite. I think little girls will love our unicorn-inspired
circus dresses, which feature multi-coloured tulle skirts.
They are bright and colourful and really capture the fun and
wild imagination of childhood.
and Spotlight
Nestled on the border of
Oakland and Berkeley in a
bustling shopping district,
Bird & Bean is an expertly
curated children’s shop founded by
Janel Andersen. After over a decade
in the children’s apparel industry and
growing her own successful brand, Nohi
Kids, Janel set out to realize her dream
of opening her very own brick & mortar
in the Bay Area of California.
“I had been looking for the right space
and opportunity for years and the stars
finally aligned to make this dream come
true,” said Janel, a longtime Bay Area
resident and mother of two. “After
being in the industry for almost 15
years, I knew so many designers/brands
that I adored and went well with my own
brand aesthetic. Having this knowledge
helped me to feel confident that I could
curate a special shop. I also started this
whole business doing street festivals
and other local shopping events and
totally loved the interaction
with customers and the
community. So, this shop
is like going back to my
street festival roots.”
In the summer of 2016,
Bird & Bean first opened its
doors for Bay Area families
and visitors, offering
customers a convenient
destination to buy highquality
clothing, gifts,
and accessories from top
brands.
In addition to carrying
their own collection, Bird &
Bean (formerly Nohi Kids),
the shop stocks beloved
and spotlight
brands like Pink Chicken, Blueberry Hill, Egg,
Quincy Mae, Meri Meri, Level, and Wild Wawa, to
name a few. Sizing starts at newborn and goes up
to size 12, with a retail price range of $20 to $90
for most items.
Named after Janel’s young children Margot and
Cohen, nicknamed Bird and Bean, the cozy shop
on College Avenue aims to be a one-stop-shop
for families seeking well-known brands as well
as undiscovered independent labels handpicked
by an industry veteran. Janel’s goal is to provide
impeccable customer service and share her years
of baby/kid product expertise with new and
longtime customers.
For spring/summer 2020, Bird & Bean’s collection
introduces two brand new styles- lively new prints
and a beautiful (but still fun, easy, washable,
and wearable) tulle/tutu party dress: already a
top seller. Cheerful prints featuring camping,
under the sea, garden parties, and safari themes
highlight the sweet and playful nature of the
California casual brand.
We Made Me® has a simple passion; to create
thoughtful products dedicated to supporting and
enhancing the wellbeing, comfort and bond shared
by parent and baby. The company has done just that,
establishing itself as a market leader around the world
and with an impressive collection of stylish, functional
and safe baby carriers.
With options for all baby-wearers, we were excited to
take a look at the company’s life-active wrap the We
Made Me® Flow. Perfect for babies aged 0-24months,
or from 8lbs ups to 35lbs, the Flow wrap offers a
versatile and intimate experience for both parent
and baby while being completely unobtrusive and
effortless while wearing.
_____________________
Keeping baby close to your heart, the
flexible fabric of the Made Me® Flow
wrap is stretchy in only only direction,
providing comfort combined with
vertical lift.
_____________________
The flow wrap is impressively long and wide, allowing
for it to be used longer than most elastic wraps and
provides more options to adjust as baby grows.
Tapered ends make it easy to tie, and the innovative,
breathable material keeps both you and baby feeling
comfortable in any weather. The unique material also
makes it possible for parents to pre-tie the wrap and
insert baby; this is an excellent feature for first-time
parents or those who are new to babywearing. The
wrap is available in 3 neutral tones - charcoal, light
grey and taupe - as well as a pretty lavender purple.
The Flow Wrap fits neatly in a mesh pouch bag that
can be easily tossed into your stroller basket or diaper
bag - perfect for on the go!
Photographer and friend of Poster Child, Brenna
Turvey, had the opportunity to review the Flow wrap
from We Made Me® with her son and loved it!
“I jumped at the chance to try out We Made Me’s
Flow Wrap mostly because I love babywearing. My
days get crazier by the hour with two children here at
home - one an active toddler and the other an even
44
more active 9-month-old. I have worn both of my
children in multiple different ways – carriers, stretch
wraps, homemade wraps and ring slings right from
birth on. They love it, and I love it!
_____________________
“When I opened the flow wrap, I was
totally taken aback by the texture of
the material. It was soft, stretchy and
breathable, unlike any wrap I’d ever
used before.”
_____________________
It came with this amazing visual instruction guide that
helped me learn how to properly wrap and place my
babe into the Flow Wrap – which felt comfortable
even on my little 5 ft tall frame. He was snug, secure
and close enough to kiss!
I was happily hands-free to help my toddler while my
babe slept soundly on my chest. The Flow Wrap is
my new go-to wrap and I will be shouting it from the
rooftops.”
Manners begin
at breakfast
by Nathena Delgado
This month, Marie-Chantal of
Greece released her modern
handbook on proper etiquette.
46
Raising kids will always have its challenges. Whether
you are a first-time mom or an experienced dad of four,
all parents face a challenge when it comes to teaching
their children the skills of good etiquette. Etiquette is
the language of manners and is the basis of respect,
kindness, and consideration. While there are many
ways to practice good manners, we came across a
brand new book that we think may just become your
go-to source for approaching the topic of modern
etiquette with your family.
This month, founder of Marie-Chantal Clothing,
Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, released her
highly anticipated new book, titled Manners Begin
at Breakfast. Within the book’s 232 pages, Princess
Marie-Chantal, the author of an influential parenting
blog with five kids of her own, reveals tips on proper
etiquette from the perspective of a well-versed parent.
“A few years ago while writing a series of posts about
manners and etiquette on my blog, I noticed that the
etiquette questions were the most read and enjoyed
by our readers. Being a big fan of family and traditions
and having raised five children, I wanted to give my
tips on what I thought was needed or needed to be
reminded. Something like a guide on what or what
not to do. A voice to help navigate today’s social
minefields. So that’s how the book was born!” Marie-
Chantal of Greece shares.
Manners Begin at Breakfast touches on key topics
of modern etiquette for children being raised in our
fast-paced, technology-centred society. The book
discusses a wealth of topics that parents often struggle
addressing, including basic table manners, social
media, fashion dos and don’ts, and party conversation.
The hardcover book is written in a lively, conversational
style with more than 100 watercolour illustrations
by London-based artist Lydia Starkey which brings
each etiquette lesson to life on the pages. The book
features a foreword from the author’s close friend,
fashion designer, Tory Burch. “I have always been a
big believer in practicing what you preach, and Marie-
Chantal is doing just that...” Burch contributes.
In her introduction of the book, Pediatrician Doctor
Perri emphasizes the importance of teaching manners
early on. “Parents who focus on helping their children
to learn how to behave are actually helping them learn
to manage their emotions, organize their thinking and
arrange the details of their lives,” she explains.
“My hope is to help parents provide their children with
a toolbox to succeed. As parents, we want our children
to be treated well when they go out into the world and
that really depends on how they treat others. Teach
them to be polite and kind from an early age, and
good manners and a happy disposition should become
second nature,” Marie-Chantal of Greece anticipates.
If you are a parent who strives to raise self-assured,
well-adjusted children who are equipped to thrive in
society and develop into confident adults, we highly
recommend you pick up a copy of Manners Begin at
Breakfast at your local bookstore today!

Celebrity moms raise mental health awareness and remind us that
YOUR MOM CARES
by Caryn Schulman
Co-Founders and longtime friends, Sharon Feldstein
When recalling my childhood, I picture my mother (celebrity Jonah Hill’s Mom) and Patsy Noah (Singer
towering over me with hot soup and whatever Adam Levine’s Mom) were brought together by
home-grown concoction she knew would cure my none other than the White House to deliver a Public
flu-induced melancholy. I can also vividly remember Service Annoucement for the Affordable Care Act in
the days that I would return from school with salty 2014. Sharon and Patsy filmed the Q&A in Sharon’s
cheeks and my mother would embrace me, not kitchen whilst they played a friendly match of
only with her arms but enfold me with the soothing BackGammon, and to their delight, the video went
consideration that only a mother could provide. viral with over one million hits. The video ended with
Michelle Obama exclaiming, “We nag you because
we love you” and the closing frame revealed the
campaign hashtag #yourmomcares.
48
When I’d first heard of the nonprofit “YourMomCares”
(YMC), my mind immediately conjured up memories
of my mother’s attentiveness and unconditional
devotion to my wellbeing. It came as no surprise
when I’d learned that YMC’s ongoing mission is to
help all kids who face mental illness feel supported
and seen. By raising funds and awareness for
organizations whose work directly impacts children’s
mental wellness, YMC works every day towards
battling the stigma of mental illness.
The slogan resonated deeply with Sharon and Patsy
as they recognized the potential and significance
of the Your Mom Cares motto. The White House
granted the two women ownership of the slogan
and from there, the duo embarked on a mission to
change the dialogue from mental illness to mental
wellness.
photography by Emily Kornya
As any mom would, YMC takes on the challenge of
expanding the field of mental wellness at full speed.
YourMomCares accomplishes this by collaborating with
experienced and trusted partners to create and fund
innovative programs for kids and adolescents that face
the challenges of mental illness. Their clear call-to-action
outlined on their well-crafted site, yourmomcares.org,
reads:
We do the work for you. If you believe that no child
should suffer alone or be unable to receive mental
health services because of the family’s financial
situation, race, gender or sexual orientation, then
support YourMomCares today.
YourMomCares’ Mobile Mom’s Fund supports work
being done by reputable non-profit organizations, like
the JED Foundation, to address a variety of pediatric
mental wellness emergencies and provide support to
families that are facing the emotional stresses that are
associated with mental illness. YMC’s Mobile Mom’s
Fund has donated to the Center for Pediatric Resilience,
the Harris Project, Young Center for Immigrant Children’s
Rights, Flint Child Health and Development Fund,
Operation Gratitude and many more!
One of the ways YourMomCares raises awareness is
through their hand-made beaded bracelets. When
donors and supporters wear the bracelets, they are
actively raising awareness of mental wellness and YMC’s
cause. The bracelets are beautiful, fun and have enticed
individuals all over the world to host ‘beading parties’
in celebration and support of YMC. One of the initial
beading parties was hosted by some celebrity moms —
Sharon, Patsy, Terria Joseph (Mom of singer Alicia Keys),
Meredith Wolff, and Lisa Zelson to name a few. The batch
of influencer-power moms made YMC branded beaded
bracelets to gift to each guest. The bracelets are one of
YMC’s creative initiatives to spread the word about their
organization.
This spring, YourMomCares invites anyone who cares
about children’s mental wellness to participate during
April and May as the nonprofit launches its second
annual YourMomCares KissCampaign around Mother’s
Day. During the campaign, YMC is challenging people
on social media to share a photo memory “sharing a
kiss” with a mom they love as a warm-hearted initiative
to not-so-symbolically #KissAwaytheStigma around
mental health.
On tough days, my mother would patiently absorb all my
tears. This very same maternal affection is the superpower
that lies at the heart of YourMomCares and is infused
into every step of amazing work YMC does. This spring,
YourMomCares encourages everyone to get involved, by
fundraising, sporting a YMC bracelet or even by simply
sharing a kiss.
When she’s not on set playing Christina
Hendricks’ daughter on NBC’s Good
Girls, child actor Everleigh McDonell is
busy working on arts & crafts and dreaming of
owning a pair of Gucci slides. We sat down with
the spirited and multi-talented young actress to
learn more about her life behind-the-scenes and
what’s in store.
Hi Everleigh! How did you get started in
acting? I don’t really know because I’ve been
doing it for so long! I’ve been acting my whole
life until I’m 7, which I am now.
What is your favorite thing about playing
Jane on Good Girls? My favorite thing is that
sometimes she is bossy, and that is the fun part.
Jane is a different person than I am in real life,
so when I act like her on the TV show and then
see myself on TV, it kind of seems like it’s another
new person.
What is a typical day like for you, or is every
day a bit different with auditions and other
projects? Every day is new, but sometimes I do
the same things. When I wake up, I eat breakfast, I
get dressed, and then I either do school, or go to
set or an audition. Sometimes I go to my Beeba
and Grampy’s house (which is my Grandma and
Grandpa).
GOOD GIRL’S
Everleigh
McDonell
INTERVIEWED BY ADRIENNE DORSEY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LILLY K PHOTOGRAPHY
What’s it like having Christina Hendricks play
your mom on the show? It is really really fun!
Christina is very nice. But the thing I don’t get is
why they put on more red hair of a wig when she
already has reddish blondish hair. I’m like, “Why
don’t they just have her own hair?” A fun part
is when I get to work with her, Retta and Mae
Whitman because we laugh, and sometimes I
wonder about what they’re talking about.
What is your dream acting role?
My dream acting role is playing a spy. I would
want to be a spy going on different missions. I got
that from the movie Spy Kids. Behind the scenes
they must have so much fun because there are
so many kids. They must get to hold really cool
stuff. I also want to do voiceover. I would love
to be a voice on a show like Doc McStuffins or
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as a new character.
You have a new television show, Truth Be
Told, coming out soon. What is your character
like on the show? Her name is Ella Dunn (well,
actually Ella Josephine Dunn). She’s very sweet
and can be quiet sometimes. To me, I’m not really
that quiet. She likes doing crafts. She’s really nice
and curious.
What are your favorite memories from acting?
My favorite day acting was on Good Girls Season
2. I had to run in the door and say, “Mommy, the
neighbor’s dog is eating your new flowers!” It
was my favorite because there were bad things
happening in the show and it made it funny that
the dog was digging in the flowers.
Besides acting, what are your other hobbies?
I like coloring, arts and crafts. I like playing with
my cousins. Alina is only 1 and can’t talk but I
like playing with her. I like seeing my family. I like
doing normal kid things, even though I’m not that
normal. I’m kinda weird haha!
SUIT BY ROCO CLOTHING
How would you describe your personal style?
Any favorite designers? I love fashion! I love
seeing it in magazines. My fashion is a sweet girl
fashion. I love Gucci and I want Gucci slides! I love
my dress from Junona that I wore to my premiere
for Truth Be Told. I look good in bright colors!
Any other upcoming projects we can look
forward to? I have some things happening that I
can’t talk about. And I have a couple of commercials
coming out soon. I’m excited for everyone to see
Truth Be Told with Octavia Spencer on AppleTV+
and Good Girls’ new season, season 3, which
starts on February 16, 2020 on NBC! It also is on
Netflix around the world!
