Hauteur
64 cent., largeur 80 cent. »
Vente Paris, François-Antoine Robit, 11 mars 1801, n o 133, acquis
I, doc. 191, p. 62.
(depuis 1904).
: an angel, seen in the upper part of the painting; is holding the
crown and the palm of the martyr. This great painting, combines
the genius of the composition, a fine colour, a delicate and gentle
touch which the artist used with such flair in the works which
characterise his best period ; the present painting is apt to confirm
the reputation he has gained. Height 64 cent., width 80 cent.”
Paris sale, François-Antoine Robit, 11 March 1801, n° 133,
acquired by Laneuville : “The subject is a martyr, indicated as Saint
Hippolytus. In the foreground, the saint is depicted lying on the
road ; his feet are tied to the tail of a dappled grey horse, which
an executioner, riding another, brownish horse, whips him up to
trail the victim. In the background, the judges who ordered this act
of torture can be seen. In the upper part of the painting, and on
the left, an angel holding the palm and the crown of the martyr.
This great painting enhances the composition with a fine colour,
exquisite draughtsmanship which are characteristic of the painter’s
best works, and which won him the strongest reputation. 24 by 30
inches.”
16 In this sale Armand Séguin bought nineteen paintings: Gerard Ter
Borch, Jan van Huysum (2), Gabriel Metsu, Isack van Ostade, G.
P. Panini, Paulus Potter (2), Jan Steen, David Teniers (4), Adrian
19 An extremely detailed memoir has been written by the current
owners’ father, based on the family papers and Mrs Elmore’s
registers, now lost. Despite a few inaccuracies and minor errors, it
is an invaluable record.
geldings and three mares, kept at his Paris townhouse.
26 Bazin, tome I, doc 191, p. 62. This letter was for long only known
through the deliberately incomplete transcription by Clément ; it
came up in a sale in 1999. It is now in the Musée des Lettres et
des Manuscrits in Paris. In the letter Géricault also mentions “a
conquest” which some authors have assumed to be Zoé Seguin
but which Bruno Chenique seems to have recently identified as
Madame Trouillard.
27 Germain Bazin substantiated this story: the painting was X-rayed,
confirming the presence of a head presenting a physiognomy close
to that of Walter Scott.
30 The other version purchased for the king in the posthumous sale
of duc de Saint-Aignan (17 June 1776) had been placed on loan to
