Where Olivia is Today…
Update from Olivia’s mom: Maureen Wheat
I first met our sweet Olivia while leading prospective
volunteers on a tour through the kennels of Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League. My eyes were drawn to
the Boxer/Pointer mix with big brown eyes begging us
to stop and pay attention to her. Immediately smitten
with Olivia, I vowed to do everything to help find her
a forever home.
Her medical challenges
were many and
included a displaced
patella, hip
dysplasia, muscle
atrophy, and
BB pellets
embedded in
her legs. The
prospect of
the high cost
of surgery kept
many people from
adopting her, but Peggy
Adams refused to let her
medical needs stand in the way
of her finding a forever home. Peggy Adams would
arrange for Olivia’s surgery once a foster home was
found for her recovery.
My family agreed to provide that foster home so that
she could have the surgery and find a forever home.
Olivia was the perfect patient and never complained.
She always showed her gratitude with a sloppy lick
and thumping of the tail. Our whole family, including
Jasper, (our Rat Terrier adopted from Peggy Adams)
fell in love with her and decided to adopt
her forever.
Eight years later, we have celebrated each day Olivia
has blessed our family. She protects us and makes us
laugh with her antics while loving us unconditionally.
When I had life-saving surgery, Olivia did not leave
my side during my own recovery – ever loyal and
protective.
These
days, we
all live in
Santa Fe, NM.
As Olivia ages gracefully, she has become an avid bird
watcher, sun dog, and snow catcher. She, who has
every reason to be mistrustful and leery of others,
shares her love and gratitude with everyone she meets.
If not for Peggy Adams, Olivia would not be here
living a life full of love, unlimited dog treats, and
endless bird watching. Instead, she may have ended
up as a hopeless, sad statistic. Peggy Adams created
a special fund in her honor to help other animals
coming in with serious medical needs. Out of our
appreciation for the effort Peggy Adams has made and
love for Olivia, we decided to make an impactful gift
to help support “Olivia’s Fund” through a charitable
gift through our estate plans. By doing so, we know
that other dogs and cats with special medical needs
will have a second chance of finding a forever home
and to live their lives filled with love.
My family hopes you will find your way to celebrate
Olivia and the animals whose lives have been and will
be saved through the extraordinary measures that
Peggy Adams takes through Olivia’s Fund by making

we brought her back to adopt her after fostering, she
was so excited to be there and see everyone! That’s
how great Peggy Adams is. She is just the goofiest and
most loving munchkin and I’m so lucky to be her

Zuzu (formerly known
as Zoey) who has
become our little
darling. We named her
Zuzu after George Bailey’s
daughter in ‘It’s A Wonderful
Life.’ She’s 13 and we wanted to give her a wonderful
life when we took her home. She enjoys car riding,
sleeping, eating ground chicken and short walks
on sunny days. Zuzu loved unwrapping Christmas
presents and meeting her Atlanta cousins. Getting
along with cats is important around here and Zuzu fits
right in. The cats are cool with her and she’s chill with

them. Maggie, our 14-year-old poodle, is very patient
and accepting of her new sister. We are blessed to
have this tiny angel in our lives. We’re so happy she’s

– THE NOLEN STORY –
Lynn and I decided to adopt a dog after our last cat
died. After Hurricane Dorian destroyed the Marsh
Harbor area and spared us, we decided to adopt a
Potcake sheltered there. Being a big supporter of
Peggy Adams, we were one of the first potential
adopters to visit the Potcakes sheltered there. At that
point, we narrowed it down to eight dogs we liked.
Once the quarantine period was over, we picked two
dogs – Mona Lisa and Leo. They had come over from
the Bahamas together. They looked like brother and
sister, so we could not separate them. I am sure that
they have been through a lot!
They have brought us so much joy. It is so much fun
watching the two play together. Potcakes are smart
dogs. We hired a dog trainer and she taught us some
good tricks. Our next challenge is getting them
comfortable walking on a leash. We may need the help
of the trainer again. It is a new experience for them

MOTHER KNOWS BEST
Kitten Season 2020
is about to begin in Palm Beach County
Here is what you can do to help save lives
We are at the start of Kitten Season: the time from
early spring through late fall when cats mate and
give birth to countless kittens. Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League provides critical public awareness tips
to help kittens, shelters and the community withstand
the season. The abundance of litters throughout the
community typically results in too many kittens being
brought to area shelters, even though it is best for
newborn kittens to be left with their mothers until
they reach about 5 weeks of age.
“Most discoveries of newborn kittens do not call
for human assistance and, in fact, no intervention
is the best thing,” says Heidi Nielsen, Director of
Information and Outreach at Peggy Adams. “The
goal is to keep the mother and kittens together to
ensure the best chances for the kittens’ survival until
the kittens are eating on their own and can be safely
removed for socialization and adoption.”
Before jumping to the rescue,
consider the following:
In the first weeks of their lives, kittens need
their mother’s care and antibodies from her
milk. As they grow, the mother will begin to
give her kittens the critical training they need
to survive on their own.
Before concluding that the kittens have been
abandoned, quietly observe from a safe
distance to determine if the mother is present.
The mother will continually stay with her litter
for the first day or two after giving birth. Then,
she will need to leave for short periods of time
to find food for herself. If the mother is not
present, she is most likely scouting for food
and will return.
A mother cat instinctively will move her nest
of kittens. If a single, young kitten is spotted,
it is likely that it is the first of the group to be
moved to the new location or the last of the
group to get moved from the old location.
Do not interfere with the kittens or the space
they are occupying. It is essential to not handle
them, create shelter, or feed them as long as the
mother is around. These interventions may
cause the mother stress and possibly to
abandon her family.
Help by providing food and water to the
mother. Be sure to place food and water
far enough away from the nest so you do
not disturb the mother and kittens or
draw predators.
Cats should be brought in for spay/neuter
once the kittens are weaned. For details, please

Following these simple measures will increase the
survival rate of the kittens, allowing them to thrive in
their natural environment. Additionally, it will allow
local animal shelters to use their resources to further
assist the current shelter population with the critical
care they need and help place adoptable animals
in homes.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
Volunteers were invited to a Sweet Celebration,
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s Annual
Appreciation Party & Awards Ceremony, on Friday,
January 24, 2020. This event celebrated those
volunteers who donated at least 50 hours of service
and who continue to show their commitment and
passion towards Peggy Adams’ mission. In 2019, our
campus volunteers contributed over 42,000 hours
to the animals in our care. We could not be more
grateful!

IN LOVING MEMORY…
Lisa’s family
Peggy Adams Executive Director/CEO Rich Anderson
reflects on Lisa’s time at Peggy Adams and thanks
players, volunteers and pros for coming out to
honor her memory.
Lisa Bowman touched hundreds of lives through
her two biggest passions – tennis and Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League. A 10-year volunteer for
Peggy Adams, she assisted with canine play groups
and dog-walking, giving the shelter animals the love
and attention they so need while waiting for their new
forever homes.
Sadly, Lisa passed away last year, and her teammates
from the Wellington Tennis Center were determined
to honor her memory. On January 30 th , they organized
a wild-and-crazy Triples Tennis Tournament, raising
the funds to dedicate a dog kennel in Lisa's memory
in Peggy Adams’ new Pet Adoption Center now under
construction.
Tennis pros donated their time and, with Peggy Adams’
staff and Tennis Center volunteers, enjoyed every
moment of organizing the special tournament.
Seventy-two players filled every court available for
the event. Friends and family came to enjoy the
action. Local businesses contributed prizes and
cash donations.
“We’ve never had more fun on a tennis court!”
exclaimed one player as she completed her rounds.
Liz Stockton and Ria Katragadda from the Wellington
Tennis Center recruited volunteer tennis pros who
donated their time; the Center donated their courts;
and Peggy Adams volunteers remembered their
colleague, while bringing adoptable dogs to greet
the crowd.

In an effort to help
save more homeless
animals’ lives, Napleton’s
on Northlake recently
presented Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League
with a donated 2019 Jeep
Cherokee and a Dodge
Ram Promaster. These
vehicles play a vital role in
the animal rescue mission of Peggy Adams.
Peggy Adams transfers thousands of animals from
other overcrowded Florida animal shelters into the
League’s adoption program. Peggy Adams is also
an emergency placement partner with numerous
agencies. Therefore, if there is a disaster or hoarding
situation, Peggy Adams will transfer and care for those
animals at their facility. These two donated vehicles
help Peggy Adams transport the animals from other
shelters or from disaster relief efforts to their shelter
located at 3200 N. Military Trail in West Palm Beach.
As part of this partnership with Napleton’s on
Northlake, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
brings adoptable cats and dogs to the dealership
the 2nd Saturday of every month from 11am-2pm.
Napleton’s on Northlake is generously paying the
adoption fees of those finding their forever homes at
the dealership.

League. “These donated vehicles increase our capacity
to save more homeless animals’ lives – whether it’s
through animal transfer from other shelters to ours,

Over 1,200 people and their fur-babies came out dressed in their finest tutus
for Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League's 19 th Annual Walk for the Animals…
Over 1,200 people, along with their
adorable pets, gathered for Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League’s 19 th Annual Walk
for the Animals on Saturday, February 22,
2020 at the Meyer Amphitheater in West
Palm Beach. This was the year to come
dressed in your best tutus since the date was 2-22-20!
Participants enjoyed a “perfect” South Florida day,
with morning showers giving way to bright sunshine.
There was live entertainment, local vendors and a
complimentary breakfast. There were also chances
to win fabulous silent auction items, raffle prizes
and amazing prize baskets awarded to our pet
contest winners. Jennifer Ross from 107.9 FM and
WFTL 850 AM once again graciously hosted the day’s
festivities, along with Ron Burke and Vanessa Vinent
from WPBF 25 News.

Some special highlights from this year’s
19 th Annual Walk for the Animals…
This year’s Mascots, sponsored by HomeAgain,
were Joy and Koko along with best friends Jillesia
and Mariah. Joy and Koko came to Peggy Adams
in February of 2019 as two of 38 dogs rescued after
their owner was found deceased inside a Palm Beach
Gardens home. Palm Beach County Animal Care
& Control removed them from the property and, as
their most active placement partner, reached out to
Peggy Adams to help with the care and placement
of all 38 dogs. Best friends Jillesia and Mariah and
their families heard about the story of these dogs
and decided they wanted to give two of them loving
homes. They fell in love with Joy and Koko and now all
four girls (Jillesia, Mariah, Joy, and Koko)
are inseparable!
Always a hit at the Walk…the pet contests!!!

decked out in their finest!

and judged.

"Spred the Dub" helped Spread the Love this past Valentine’s Day
at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
Spred the Dub, hosts of the annual Bark Back Benefit
and popular local band, were at Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League this past Valentine’s Day
to spread the love as they passed out toys to the
dogs and cats currently waiting to find their
forever home.

The Valentine’s Day event was part of a
fundraising effort for Spred the Dub’s Walk for
the Animals team, Bark Back Benefit. Donors
who gave $14 to the Walk team before Valentine’s
Day had a toy given to a shelter animal in their honor.
“What a wonderful Valentine’s treat for our animals,”
said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League. “This is a fantastic and
thoughtful fundraising idea by Spred the Dub, as all

NEW PET ADOPTION CENTER
Site preparations were completed and the walls began
to go up in late January. The project is on schedule
for completion by November 2020.
Construction is fully underway for the new
Pet Adoption Center at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League. Slated to open in November 2020, the Center
will have the capacity to double the number of lives
rescued, enabling Peggy Adams to save thousands
more dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.
“The Center will also feature dedicated classroom
space to inaugurate county-wide humane education
programs,” notes Rich Anderson, Executive Director/
CEO of Peggy Adams. “These programs are sorely
lacking in our community. Educating more people –
youth in particular – about the humane treatment of
animals is critical to the prevention of cruelty, abuse
and the abandonment of animals,” Anderson added.
“Hundreds of generous donors are coming together
to make this dream a reality for our community,” he
continues. “The facility will provide state-of-the-art
accommodations for the animals sheltering here, as
well as an enhanced adoption experience for families
and individuals seeking a dog or a cat to love.”
Designed by Jackson & Ryan Architects of Houston,
Texas, specialists in the field of animal shelter design,
the Center is being built by KAST Construction.
KAST is the largest general contractor in
Palm Beach County and one of the largest privately
held construction companies in the Southeast.

NEW PET ADOPTION CENTER
The new Center features a Cat Adoption Wing at
the east end of the structure and three Dog Adoption
Wings. Areas already named are shown in orange.
The Cat Adoption Wing includes four large, group
cat apartments with catios, allowing the animals to
access freely an outdoor area facing butterfly gardens.
A central cat tower with condos for cats who prefer
to be housed individually fills the center of the Cat
Adoption Wing, with Cat Colony Rooms for small
groups of related kitties facing the lobby and along
the north wall.
Dog wings include large Dog Adoption Rooms for
groups of compatible animals as well as individual
dog kennels, all with outdoor patios readily accessed
by the animals housed there. At the end of each wing,
there is an outdoor dog play yard where daily play
groups, as well as behavior classes for the public, can
be held, covered to protect participants from strong
sun and rain, and with fans to circulate and cool
the air.
To the rear of the Cat Adoption Wing are located the
veterinarian office, volunteer office, a large volunteer
workroom/conference room, a volunteer lounge and a
general conference room, as well as a grooming room,
photography studio and pharmacy.
Commemorative bricks will be laid in the entryway
to the new center as well as in the outdoor café area,
while trees and benches honoring special pets and
family members will be featured throughout the
grounds and the visitors’ areas.

Cat Colony Rooms and Cat Condos
A variety of living spaces support the needs of cats
coming to us for care. Cats enjoying group living will
have four large apartments with garden-side outdoor
“catios” freely accessible to them. Related families
will enjoy one of fifteen cat colony rooms, 7 of which
remain available for naming. Cats preferring solo
living will be housed in individual two-room condos
in the central cat tower. There are 26 condos still
available for naming. A cat café will invite visitors to
relax and unwind while playing with adoptable cats
and kittens seeking their forever home.

Dog Adoption Rooms – Dog Kennel Galleries – Individual Dog Kennels
Our new Dog Adoption Wings will feature large
Dog Adoption Rooms for more than one animal,
with ready access to an outdoor patio and with noisereducing
glass to create a less stressful environment.
The 24 Dog Rooms are enclosed by two Dog Adoption
Room Galleries, one of which remains available for
naming. There are 10 Dog Adoption Rooms still
available for naming.
Individual Dog Kennels offer bright, clean spaces,
also with an outdoor patio, for one dog at a time. The
kennels are connected via seven Dog Kennel Galleries,
two of which remain available for naming. There are
45 individual kennels still available for naming.
New Dog Kennel
Visitors looking to adopt a dog will be greeted
by adoption counselors in each wing’s adoption
lobby area. They can utilize one of six indoor
Get-Acquainted Rooms or one of eight
Meet-and-Greet Patios to get to know their
prospective pet.

Adams Animal Rescue League to save thousands
of lives each year,” comments Rich Anderson,
Executive Director/CEO. “Robert Falcon, through
his generous bequest last fall, will be doing enormous
good for years to come for literally thousands of
lost, abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats
coming to us for care.”
Mr. Falcon loved animals. The medical services
at Peggy Adams touch each and every dog and cat
receiving care here each year, more than 37,000 in
2019. Whether coming for an annual checkup at
our Wellness Clinic, for our spay/neuter services, or
receiving shelter here while awaiting their forever
homes, every dog and cat we see are helped by the
resources of our Pharmacy.
“We remain beyond grateful to the thoughtful people
who make a provision for Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League in their estate plans,” notes Anderson.
“It is humbling to be entrusted with this kind of
legacy. We take it very much to heart.”
In 2019, Peggy Adams was the recipient of
$2,544,265.70 in bequests. “These contributions go
directly to the care of the animals,” Anderson explains.
“Their impact is inestimable.”

Junior League of the Palm Beaches
Since 1941, Junior League of the Palm Beaches
(JLPB) has been an integral part of our community.
The JLPB is an organization of women committed to
promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of
women, and improving our community through the
effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
Jones Foster Launches New
Community Program
Jones Foster, a local Palm Beach County law firm
founded in 1924, recently announced the launch of
Jones Foster Impact, a new firmwide community
program. This organized initiative will enhance
the Firm’s community involvement by offering all
employees a platform to collaborate, engage, and
collectively impact the community through efforts
designed to support local charitable organizations.
To kick off the new partnership, Lauren Ellis and
Kaitlyn Seyler from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League attended the launch event at the main offices
on Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach. They discussed
the organization’s mission and all of the exciting
programs planned for 2020. They also brought a
special guest, Ruby, who stole the show in a tutu and
won the hearts of all in attendance.
“The Junior League of the Palm Beaches applauds the
work of the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. One
of JLPB's primary focus areas is foster care. Like Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue League, the JLPB believes in
helping the most vulnerable in our society,” states
Laura Wissa, JLPB President.
In February, the Jones Foster Impact Team
participated in the 19 th Annual Walk for the Animals
event and served as the Pet Costume Contest sponsor.
In addition, a team of volunteers took time out of their
workday and provided hands-on support during an
on-site service day, the first of several scheduled for
this year. They deep-cleaned holding cages and floors
to help ensure a clean, healthy space for the animals
awaiting their forever homes.
Both organizations are making a positive impact
for those unable to stand up for themselves through
effective community initiatives, education, and
volunteer programs.

all you do to save the lives of so many animals in our
community and for furthering that critical and unique
bond between people and animals.

Kid's CORNER
It’s never too late to instill philanthropy in children.
They should learn that philanthropy is not just for
adults or for the wealthy, but that anyone making an
attempt to better the society is a philanthropist.
We’d like to give a special shout out to Sage for her
generous donation of food and supplies to our Peggy’s
Pantry. In lieu of birthday presents, Sage asked friends,
yet again, to bring items for animals in need. Featured
in this picture is Sage with a trunk full of goodies
for local cats and dogs. Sage collected donations for
Peggy Adams on her 6 th , 7 th and now 9 th birthday,
and is counting the days until she turns 16 so she can
volunteer! What a remarkable young philanthropist!

Have you ever wanted to add a pet to your family but you just
couldn’t? If you are someone who wants to “watch over” the canine
and feline residents in our dog and cat adoption center in a way
that hovers above the rest, please consider becoming one of our
Guardian Angels.
A Guardian Angel funds the care of our resident cats or dogs in a
specific condo or kennel. During your year as a Guardian Angel,
you’ll help a number of pets as they await their forever home.
Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo
or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet’s
Guardian Angel. You’ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin.
Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity.
The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $35 a day
and the average length of stay with us is 25 days.

of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for eight

On January 31, 2020, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
received 24 small dogs of various ages and breeds from
Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control due to a hoarding
situation. Mostly Chihuahuas and other small breed dogs,
they were living in deplorable conditions. Special thanks to
Scenthound who spent the day at Peggy Adams providing
baths and grooming to several of the dogs. Scenthound is
a business partner of Peggy Adams and always provides
support in situations such as this.
