HOT TOPIC

How big is the problem?

The headline figures are stark: Bangladeshi and Pakistani households earn about a third less on average

than the median for white families — a gap of £8,900 and £8,700 respectively — according to a report by the

independent Resolution Foundation think-tank a year ago. Earnings in black African families are typically

about a fifth less than white families.

HOT TOPIC

Is enough being done to create

jobs for young people? Should

there be more work experience

opportunities for young people

in school and college?

499,000 young people aged 16-

24 were unemployed in August-

October 2018. Whether or not

youth are enrolled in school,

receiving training or working, has

important implications for future

economic growth, development

and stability. If overlooked,

youth unemployment has a

potential to have significant and

serious social repercussions.

Youth unemployment can lead

to social exclusion and unrest.

Investing in decent job creation

however, as well as in education

and training opportunities for

the youth, will help them find

their place and contribute to

more prosperous and stable

societies. ≤

CHUKA HARRISON UMUNNA

Chuka Harrison Umunna born

17 October 1978, is a British

Labour politician who has been

the Member of Parliament (MP)

for Streatham since 2010 and

was Shadow Business Secretary

from 2011 to 2015.

Introduction

This evening I want to talk about

why our young people are killing

each other; why politics is failing

to properly respond to this; why

this is an issue for all of society

not just one part of it; and, why

the key to reducing this violence

is to empower our young people

in a society that too often robs

them of agency.

My main argument: the Golden

Rule – that you do not do to

others what you would not want

done to yourself – is a two way

street. We provide young people

with an environment in which

they can thrive; they abide by

the norms, rules and values of

society of which they are a part.

This mutual obligation between

society and young people has

been broken. There can be no

excuse for the violence but we

won’t end it unless we renew this

social contract.

I loved how it turned out, and I

MUSIC

TIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR SINGLE

EVERY SONG SHOULD BE YOUR BEST WORK.

Don’t release a song if you’re not excited to show it to anyone. If you

wouldn’t listen to it yourself, wait to release something you would.

We had a song we almost released on this upcoming EP and no

matter how many times I tried to re-write the chorus, it just wasn’t

getting me excited. After talking with my producer, we decided to

scratch it and I showed him a song I had written a week prior. It’s

now our favorite one on the record.

I am so happy we didn’t settle for “good enough” and waited to

release one we were really proud of.

THERE IS A FORMULA FOR RELEASE DATES.

Though it may seem like artists and bands release their music

whenever they want to, more likely than not, their timing was

extremely calculated. Just because the songs are mixed and

mastered doesn’t mean they should go immediately into exposure.

When you are planning to release a record, you must consider how

long mixing and mastering will take and how much time should be

spent in promotion. Then, schedule your release day accordingly.

Typically, if you’re releasing a single off an album, you will want to

share it anywhere between 2-4 weeks before the album comes out.

If it’s your first EP, a release show should be held the same day your

music is released online. Timing is everything— too quickly and no

one knew it was coming, wait too long and people forget.

NETWORK. NETWORK. NETWORK. (Wisely.)

Let people know you exist. Don’t be annoying, but make yourself

and your internet presence known. If you’re afraid people will

judge you for self-promotion, you need to humble yourself and

start accepting that you cannot expect to make it alone. Be willing

to share what you have with others — but do it with humility. Get

started on a website, social media handles, and a Facebook music

page if you haven’t already.

People can’t listen to your music if they have no idea where to find

you online.

Out in the real world, you may be like me and might be perfectly

content spending hours alone in your room writing music like any

crazed creative person. You need to physically force yourself to go

out to shows and events and meet people there. You’ll be surprised

how quickly friendships will be formed when you start showing

your face more often. Most importantly, meet these people and

genuinely become friends with them. When you start treating

people like friends instead of a means to an end on social media,

they’ll start to care about your project and be the ones to help you

get the word out.

YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO ORGANIZED

There are some things in life to which you can say, “Don’t worry

about it,” “Go with the flow,” or “Just let things fall into place.” This

is not one of those things. Planning an event requires diligence

and organization. You must be on top of your e-mails, contacts,

expenses, meetings, and team members. There’s nothing more

annoying than working for someone who isn’t giving any direction,

making any firm decisions, or keeping their ducks in a line. To be

someone people want to work with, you must be on top of your

schedule and plans.

Better to be slightly neurotic and functional than too laid back and

disorganized.

BE CONSISTENT.

Once you get the ball rolling, you cannot stop. There’s always that

guy who promotes his first single and you never hear from again.

It’s not the fan’s job to keep the buzz going. They will help, but you

need to be the one initiating the interaction. Post about upcoming

news, share the news, then continue to share your latest news.

Don’t overdo it— but post at least once a week from your social

media sites. Be on the look out for opportunities to create

a buzz. Thank any blogs or radio stations that featured your

music, share your photographers’ pages, and post every show

you’re a part of— big or small.

BE CONFIDENT.

If your genre of music isn’t too popular in your area, don’t

use that as an excuse to not do it. Finding local artists to do

shows with may be more difficult, but if you keep doing what

you’re best at, opportunities will happen on their own. In our

case, Nashville isn’t exactly the electronic-pop center of the

country, but we knew if we loved this style of music and felt

that we could do it well, we should stick to it. Find your niche,

capitalize on it, and be confident in what you can accomplish.

Who knows? You may just be the fresh new sound your city

didn’t know it was missing.

THERE’S NOT ONE RIGHT WAY TO DO IT.

There are a hundred ways not to do it, but there is certainly

not one right way to go about releasing an independent

record. There are a multitude of different services, methods,

and products to choose from when going about it alone.

Determine what your goals are, what your budget allows,

and what’s realistic for you at this point in your career. Ask

around for some advice and figure out what strategies other

people used when releasing their music. Gain insight from

their experiences and pick and choose which methods might

be best for you. Either way, rest assured you will not be left

in the dust. There are benefits to every service and no matter

which ones you decide to use, the job will get done.

KNOW WHEN TO STOP ASKING FOR ADVICE.

Between your friends, family, and team members who hear

your music before its released, you’re bound to get a lot

of feedback regarding how you could make that last song

“sound even better.” What’s most important is: Do YOU like

it. Second, come the suggestions from only those you trust. I

recommend no more than five people hearing a song in preproduction.

Having too many ears and opinions can start to

blur your original vision for a song.

Taking everyone’s advice is like forcing twelve co-writers

to write a song together. No one else knows how you were

feeling when you wrote it, and surely no one else needs to

know why you chose to use “this” word over “that” word.

Remember, it’s YOUR music first. Know who has the opinions

you should take and who can wait to hear your music when

it’s finished.

SAVE UP. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE UNFORESEEN EXPENSES.

No matter how well you plan, there will ALWAYS be

unforeseen expenses. While you’re still at this alone, set

aside some money to pay for extra rehearsals, solutions for

roadblocks, or implementing any last minute ideas. If the

next couple paychecks are supposed to fund this project, be

safe and set aside one more for the expenses you didn’t see

coming. In the end, you’ll be glad you did.

PATIENCE AND APPRECIATION.

With yourself and those you’re working with, have all the

patience in the world. It WILL get done on time. Take a breath

and be thankful for the work everyone is putting in to help you

get where you’re going. This may the the project of a lifetime

for you, but you are just one of many projects other people

are working on to stay employed. I can’t say it enough: be

someone people want to work with. Be thankful and patient

with others and they will be thankful and patient in return.

FINANCE

TAKING THE PLUNGE

INTO PROPERTY INVESTMENT

At first glance, the idea of investing in property would appear to be somewhat archaic and

cash intensive when compared to the more modern notion of making money online, either

through selling courses, leveraging blog content, or creating a micro-business around a

craft or specialist service… yet, it remains an incredibly lucrative and stable way to make

cash, both in the short term (through flipping properties) and in the long term (through

renting properties out, like in the popular board game Monopoly).

HEALTH

HOW TO GET INTO

TRIATHLON

Way back in 2015, when I was about to tackle my first ever triathlon

I thought to myself… what would I say to someone who is interested in

taking on their first triathlon but just not sure?! So I put together this

post with a few things which I think you need to know before you sign up…

THERE’S_A_DISTANCE_FOR_EVERYONE

Back in 2015, Castle Triathlon introduced the Starter Sprint distance which I had planned

on taking on at Hever Castle in September. It’s a 200m swim, 15km bike ride and 2km run. It’s

doable and will give you a taste and a little experience for the longer events. They also have a ton of

variations including a duathlon (run – bike – run) and a swim-run aquathlon if you want to try just

two disciplines first..

SO WHAT_IF_YOU’RE_NOT_A_STRONG_SWIMMER/CYCLIST/RUNNER*

…well, you know I didn’t even know how to swim properly just a few months before I signed up for a

triathlon?! Everyone has their weakness so you just focus your training to suit your needs. I spent

most of my time in the pool, kept my legs ticking over at races and run club, and then kinda just hope

that I would remember how to ride a bike by race day!

BUSINESS IDEAS

FOR YOUTH

Today’s young people

have an incredible

advantage over past

generations: More

resources to build

knowledge and skills

are available than ever

before. If they have the

courage and persistence

to take advantage of

them, the opportunities

are truly great.

While starting a business

isn’t easy, it will change

your life for the better.

You will learn to think

on your feet, overcome

tough challenges,

be creative, manage

finances, be diplomatic,

and lead your team.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONSULTANT

As a teen growing up in the Internet age, you have a serious advantage over

many adults. Your familiarity with the World Wide Web will make learning and

understanding social networking, search engines, and blogging much simpler.

Companies pay good money for those with expertise in these areas, and there

are plenty of teens and young adults who make a great living as social media

consultants.

ETSY RETAILER

Do you know how to make awesome necklaces? Do you paint, knit scarves, take

photographs, or make your own soap? Do you have a great eye when it comes to

picking out vintage clothing?

BABYSITTER

Babysitting is a great way to earn money because there are almost no start-up

costs. All you need is a great reputation or great references, and the ability to

find local parents.

KIDS’ TAXI SERVICE

Parents are always stretched for time, so why not start shuttling their kids to

ballet, violin, karate, or soccer practice? Parents can stay at work longer or

spend more time relaxing and cooking dinner while you drive their kids to afterschool

activities.

COMPUTER TUTOR

Chances are, you’ve been using a computer for as long as you can remember.

You know how to troubleshoot, how to organize files, and how to use Google to

find whatever you need. Though these are essential modern skills, not everyone

possesses them. Therefore, you have the opportunity to impart your knowledge

and work as a computer tutor for older adults, teaching them how to set up an

email account, navigate the Web, or sign up for RSS feeds.

OTHER IDEAS

WHAT I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED

Trevor Blackmen

NEVER AGAIN

What 5 things do you wish you knew

before you started?

Let me take a moment because that’s

a good Question.

1. People always say they read the

small print, but reading the small print

and truly understanding the small

print are two different things. One

thing that I have learnt now, yes I read

the small print but if I’m not sure I get

someone who I know will to check it

out.

2. The benefit of having a host of

mentors and a host of mentors as you

actually need people who know what

they are on about in certain areas.

So one of the things I have learnt is

to widen my network and listen to

the advice of people that I trust. I

have two very good solicitors one in

media and law and ones is business

and commerce. Very different. I have

a great advisor in the council in terms

of quality, social and education could

not do without him helps with our

bids. I have a community advisor.

Who will tell me how it is. And I have

three youth groups who I consult with

constantly because I’m not young.

3. This is the thing with business

you get to this point where people

talk about delegate. Now I delegate

but there are certain things I do not

delegate, because all’s you are doing

is shunning your responsibilities. As

at the end of the day the buck stops

with you. If you’re the CEO the buck

stops with you. So I have realised in

business you have to own everything.

If it means you have a sleepless night

or two then do it because in the end

it will be beneficial to you and the

people you work with.

4. You have to respect your

employee’s because without them

who are the backbone of the company

you can’t survive.

5. I do not mix friendship and

business. I have friends who are

friends and friends who can advise

me. When you bring in friendship at

the beginning and then you set up a

business, even though you have those

great night together where you work

to 5 o clock in the morning and its

great stuff. When the buck stops and

someone has to take responsibility,

certain people may not put there

hands in the air or don’t like the mirror

shone on them.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

ISUK tips to Get Hired

TRY ONLINE NETWORKING

Get plugged in to career networking sites like

Linkedin. You might think this is a step ahead of

yourself if you’re still studying, but it actually looks

great to employers if you’re already keen to know

what’s going on in the job market before you’ve even

graduated.Join discussion groups for industries

you’re interested in and start building your social

network to keep in the loop for the latest job offers.

Following companies that you like and commenting

on their posts is also a great way to get noticed.

TALK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Staff referral is one of the most popular methods

used for recruitment by employers, as companies

often prefer to hire someone who their trusted

employees can vouch for.

Take advantage of this by asking around friends

and family who work in industries you’d like to

explore. This can often result in you finding out

about vacancies before the competition do, and

instantly puts you at an advantage if someone can

recommend you.

CAREER & GRADUATE FAIRS

Careers and graduate fairs aren’t just about the

freebies (although these are always a welcome

perk!). These fairs are a fantastic opportunity to

meet and talk directly to big-time employers and

recruiters. Remember, they’ve paid for the stall

they’re standing at for the sole purpose of speaking

to job-seekers like you, so take advantage of being

in this rare position.

Make the most of the opportunity to network and be

informed about application processes and chances.

Also, don’t forget to take a notepad – take down

the names, positions and email addresses of the

people you talk to and send them a follow-up email

afterwards (just a quick ‘hello’ to say how nice it was

to meet them and get you on their radar!)

TRY A RECRUITMENT AGENCY

Finding work through an agency can be a good

choice, particularly if you find the whole idea of

selling yourself particularly tough – recruiters are

paid to do that bit for you!

Recruitment agencies regularly and actively search

for work on your behalf, so this of course can lighten

the burden a bit if you’re finding trawling for jobs

particularly tiresome, and it can bag you a job

quicker than expected.

However, while there are big positives, do be aware

that temp work sourced by recruitment agencies

can often involve a whole lot of licking envelopes for

minimum wage, and nothing more inspiring. Agency

work for students tends to be poorly paid, often

pretty boring and (depending on the job) lacks longterm

security and prospects.

BECOME YOUR OWN BOSS

Many students and graduates often feel

discouraged from starting their own business due

to risk or the lack of security it offers.

Although becoming your own boss can seem

like a scary move, if you have a big idea and

the motivation to push it then this could be the

smartest move you ever make.

Our Head Honcho, Owen, began Save the Student

as his own business venture whilst he was still

studying for his Geography degree! Five years on

and he’s never looked back (read more about Save

the Student’s story here).

There are a growing number of organisations

and websites designed specifically to help young

entrepreneurs succeed at business. Check out

TESTIMONIALS

e

ZECHARIAH, 17

I personally feel like I’ve learnt a lot about

communication at lnside Success UK. Working with

them has taught me a lot about talking to people

and has improved that skill a lot. However I believe

that it has most helped empower me by teaching me

resilience; and never giving up. Pushing pass myself

(however I’m feeling, whatever I’m going through) to

get done what needs to be done for the team and even

for myself as an individual.

MARWA RASHID, 16

Inside success has taught me that team

work and hard work is what makes you

the best version of yourself.

My experience with inside success has been amazing

and really enjoyable. Inside success has helped me

come out my comfort zone much more and I have

been able to talk to my fellow colleagues with passion

and great matureness about life education and jobs in

the outside world.

Inside success has helped me in many

ways it has helped my confidence level

very highly so I have been able to have

conversation with members of the public

confidently as well as this I’ve learnt how

to persuade certain individuals. Another

thing it has helped me with is that my

determination to make money for my self

and be successful has grown helping me

understand the way life works and that

you have to put in all your effort to get

what you want to achieve. Plus the fact

that I’m around people that are around

me are around about my age so I was able

to comfortably get involved when I first

started a couple months back.

NIMO SAEED, 16 CECIL FRANCESCATO, 15

During my time working with Inside Success I

believe I have seen a boost in my confidence. I

have enjoyed making new friends and of course

making money. Inside Success has taught me how

to be successful, motivated and determined.

e

Inside Success has helped me with my

communication skills and improved

my confidence I enjoyed talking to new

people and improving my skills each day

also helped me financially.

KUDJO KPORDJE, 20

ISRAEL, 16

My experience with Inside Success has been

life changing; being with the company has

nurtured my ability to speak to people and also

adjust to situations under pressure. I have been

gifted many opportunities doing this job, from

marketing companies to trading companies. The

only thing I would change is, I should have joined

the company years ago.

Inside Success has become a very

essential part of my life not only does it

help me in the financial aspect but I’ve

also learnt a lot of lessons from Inside

Success things such as communication,

leadership skills and perseverance. As

a young adult myself I know that many

young people don’t get the chances I got.

That’s why I try my hardest to reach out

to those in need. Young people are only

20% of our population but 100% of our

future. I have great faith that as long

Inside Success exists many youth will be

guided down the right path.

London’s Finest Distribution was founded with the

publication of the first book, A Product of My Environment,

written by myself Chris Sibia. After learning every step of

book creation, I decided with my business partner Burnie

Brightly to help other’s write and publish their stories.

The second book from LFD co-written by myself and Reginald

Owusu is called It’s On Top. This book was released on the

21st of February 2018 and was closely followed by the third

release on the 1st of April 2018, co-written by myself and

Mark Tugwell called, The Lie That Made Me. These books,

like A Product of My Environment were written to engage

with the youth that do not enjoy, or see the importance in

reading. After the release of It’s On Top and The Lie That

Made Me, LFD got back to work, working on the next wave

of LFD books, which we are going to stagger out over the

course of 2019.
