A guide to to 10 fun games that wll help families, couples and people on their own survive the self isolation and lockdowns.

10 Board Games To Help You Survive

Coronavirus Self Isolation

They Include Games For Families,

Couples And Includes FOUR That You

Can Play On Your Own!

I wanted to put together this quick guide to easy, fun and challenging board games

to help people deal with this lockdown we’re all in.

Playing board games is an enjoyable way to challenge yourself or have fun

competing with your partner, friends and family. It’s something that we all need,

especially in these difficult times.

I deliberately chose games that are available from Amazon, so that they could be

delivered to your doorstep with a few clicks and included links to each game from

both the USA and UK Amazon stores. Make sure you click the right one as Amazon

will happily take your order from the wrong one and add on massive postage costs.

Make sure you play safe, so get some masks (UK link / USA link) and gloves (UK

link / USA link) if needed.

You’ll notice that there aren’t any prices. This is because Amazon prices vary a lot.

Indeed, some readers may be put off by the cost of a board game, and they vary a

lot too, but just remember how much entertainment you will get from them, through

this crisis, and beyond. That’s why I’ve included the links to videos, made by others,

to give you as full a picture about each game. I hope you become a fan of at least

some of them.

If you enjoy this selection then please send me any feedback to my Facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/BoardGamesLive/ and like the post and the page or

follow me on Twitter @BoardGames_Live and donate if you can at my blog.

Please share this as much as possible and let’s bring a little happiness to the

Stay safe and happy gaming

Missing the commute? Ticket to Ride is a wonderfully simple game that can be

enjoyed by all ages

Ticket to Ride is an award winning, cross-country train adventure game. Players

collect train cards that enable them to claim railway routes connecting cities

throughout North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn.

Additional points come to those who can fulfil their Destination Tickets by connecting

two distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous railway.

• A fast-paced, award-winning board game

• Connect iconic North American cities and build your train routes to earn points

• Players must compete to grab the best train cards and routes before their

• Ticket cards challenge you to plan ahead and connect two faraway cities for

additional points

• 2 to 5 players, 60 minutes, 8+

To really see what it’s like, watch the video below, but make sure you watch until the

23 rd minute – you’ll see why!

What’s it like to play?

I love playing Ticket To Ride and yet I’m useless at it!

How’s that for a

It starts off nice and easy, collecting cards to put trains down, creating routes to

score points. Then someone claims a route you were just about to get, or you’re

faced with the dilemma to gamble on getting more destination cards for more points

or lose points if you don’t complete them.

There are so many versions of the game, but I’d recommend that you start with the

original version as the others add new rules or themes to the original game.

Ticket to Ride fun fact

Alan R Moon demonstrated the game to Days of Wonder and all was going well and

they were all enjoying it. Then mid-game he snatched it away from them leaving

them wanting more! A risky ploy, but it obviously worked, as it’s sold over 3 million

Carcassonne is the perfect introduction to the modern world of board games. With its

simple rules (place a tile, place a meeple (a playing piece), score points), it should

be part of everyone's collection.

Draw a tile and play a tile. That’s all you have to do in a turn – easy right? Not quite.

The tiles have a mix of parts of a castle, a road or a part of a field. These must be

matched up as you play a tile and pieces in your colour are played to claim them.

Points are scored when roads and cities are completed, but the fields aren’t scored

until the end of the game and score points for every city they connect making for an

exciting finish.

As the map grows, so does the opportunity for players to disrupt each other’s plans.

Everyone is adding to the same map and only one meeple can be on any given

feature at a time—so if you don’t place a meeple on something, someone else

probably will.

What’s it like to play?

Carcassonne is deceptively

simple and taking a turn

couldn’t be easier. It’s so easy

to help younger or

inexperienced players decide

what they could do with the tile

they’ve just taken and then let

them decide what to do

Once you’ve played a few

games it can get very strategic

by not only building castles and

roads for yourself but also

blocking opponents or even

stealing large castles from

Your Carcassonne collection can grow rapidly as you can not only add in new

expansions to add more to the game, there are also a whole range of Carcassonne

based games. South Seas is our favourite, but you may prefer Safari, Amazonas or

even the Star Wars version.

In this game, you try to lead your people from the sinking central island of Atlantis to

the safety of one of four islands nearby. Your people can get there quickly by boat (if

they find one) or more slowly by swimming. But it will be a perilous journey as they

must avoid Sea Serpents, Whales, and Sharks. When the volcano on Atlantis

explodes, the game is over. The player with the most survivor points wins.

What’s it like to play?

Bad losers beware! This is the attack everyone, eat everyone and have so much fun

game that’s over 30 years old! The game starts with game pieces all over the

mythical land of Atlantis but it’s sinking rapidly dumping all the people into the shark

infested sea.

In a turn, a player removes part of the island, then tries to get their people to the

safety of the beaches and then send sharks and sea monsters to eat other player’s

It can be brutal, but it may prove highly therapeutic killing the family you’re cooped

up with for months but only in a game!

This is the laugh out loud party game that’s based on charades but so much better

and so much fun to play.

What’s it like to play?

Time's Up! Party is a team game which is played over the course of three rounds. On

each round, teams guess as many of the 40 cards as you can, but the rules change

each round. Each round uses the same 40 cards.

First Round: Speak Freely – but can’t pass!

Second Round: One Word – One-word clues and one guess per card but you can

Third Round: Mime – Only miming and sound effects are allowed but you are no

longer allowed to speak.

When the game is over! The team who guessed the most cards during all three

rounds wins the game.

Playing the game is hilarious as some teams develop a shorthand for clues while

others act like they’ve just met.

and friends who have a

A very simple but addictive dice game. Roll the dice and mark xs on your

scoresheet for the combinations rolled. There are a few twists too, just as once

you’ve marked off a number on a colour you can’t mark off a lower number.

• A dice game for the whole family.

• Here it is always your go - always. No waiting time required.

• Qwixx is classically simple, explained in 2 minutes and exciting to the end.

• In each round one player throws the dice, all players can use the result.

What’s it like to play?

It’s fun, simple, and everyone is involved all of the time! It’s also very addictive so it

will be rare to play only one game. It’s so portable so when the virus has gone its

easy to take to pubs, restaurants, beaches etc and will become a family favourite.

How to play video – this maybe very important as since it’s a German game you

may only get German rules. If that happens, just watch this video. The other is a

review. There is an option to watch the videos in full screen mode.

Who’s it for?

This is ideal for families and couples.

In The Quacks of Quedlinburg, players are charlatans - or quack doctors - each

making their own secret brew by adding ingredients one at a time. Take care with

what you add, though, for a pinch too much of this or that will spoil the whole

Each player has their own bag of ingredient chips. During each round, they

simultaneously draw chips and add them to their pot. The higher the face value of

the drawn chip, the further it is placed in the swirling pattern. Push your luck as far as

you can, but if you add too many cherry bombs, your pot explodes!

At the end of each round, players gain victory points and coins to spend on new

more powerful ingredients to add to their bags. But players with exploded pots must

choose points or coins — not both! The player with the most victory points at the end

of nine rounds wins the game.

What’s it like to play?

This maybe the most complicated of this games selection but I absolutely love it and

played it with all ages, so I have no hesitation in recommending it.

The real skill of this funny game is knowing when to push your luck and when to quit

as too many cherry bombs can make your cauldron explode!

We also play a variant where each player draws out a single chip in turn, adding to

the tension.

Who’s it for?

Families and couples.

If self-isolating at home is making you feel trapped, then why not try the board game

version of an escape room!

Exit: The Game is a series of escape room games for the home. Players must solve

riddles and puzzles and crack codes to escape from an imaginary room or

environment. But the clock is ticking! Can you escape?

• Teamwork: Up to 4 players work together to solve the clues and escape.

• Unique themes: Each game has a different setting with clues and puzzles

integrated into the storyline.

• Warning - One-time use: Each game can only be played once, because you

must mark up, fold, and tear the game materials to crack the codes. Think

of it as a small outlay for entertainment.

What’s it like to play?

Some puzzles are easy others are much, much

harder and some will leave you scratching your

head until someone get’s it. The game is

supposed to be completed within an hour but play

it however you like. I’ve played one with 3

players and shared the excitement when we

realised the surprising ending and am trying

another a little at a time on my own.

Who’s it for?

Ideal for couples and families and enjoyable for solo gamers as well. In fact,

anyone trapped at home by a virus!

Roll For It is a fun, easy to learn game for the whole family while keeping advanced

players on their toes!

Each player gets a set of 6 coloured dice. The cards are dealt to the middle of the

table based on the number of players. Each player takes turns trying to roll dice to

match the image on the cards with each card having a designated amount of points

to play for, easier = less, harder = more.

• Fast to learn and play

• Quick games with the right amount of tension

• Great for new or young gamers

• Amount of luck is a great leveller

What’s it like to play?

The balance is between going for easy points for a quick win or going for more but

potentially losing out to someone else and lowering your chances to get the right

dice through having less available to roll.

You can put your dice on multiple cards to make your next turn easier, but don’t

spread yourself too thin or you’ll run out of dice.

Who’s it for?

Families and couples.

• Work together to discover as many Mystery words as possible!

• Come up with the best clues without them being identical

• A cooperative party game for all ages

• For 3 to 7 players | 20 minutes play time | Ages 8 and up

Just One is a cooperative party game in which players discover as many mystery

words as possible.

Players take turns to draw a card without looking at it and randomly chooses a

number from 1 to 5 to select a mystery word.

The others then secretly write a one-word clue on their easels, then compare them

and cancel any identical clues. Any clues are shown to the player so that they can

guess the mystery word!

What’s it like to play?

It’s a lot of fun to play as you only have that single word that you can use as a clue.

Do you go obvious or something more unique? For example, if the word was apple

what would you go for? Would you write “tree”, “Newton” or “cider”? It’s a true “just

one more game” game!

Who’s it for?

You need a lot of players

(3 or more) so for families only.

Let me first apologise to anyone who finds the inclusion of this offensive. We

absolutely love this game, did so long before Coronavirus appeared and will long

after. We are also finding it therapeutic to play this now and it shows the challenge

that we face. We could all use the ability to work together that this game demands.

Pandemic is a cooperative game of teamwork where an elite disease control team

must keep four deadly diseases at bay. Each team member has a specific ability.

With diseases cropping up all over the planet, you need to play strategically to travel

around the world, treat diseases, set up a network of research stations and collect

the sets of cards to find the cures. With outbreaks and epidemics can you save

Watch the video as Wil Wheaton and his friends play Pandemic.

What’s it like to play?

This is a truly fantastic game that gives

you a different challenge every game

as epidemics can appear anywhere in

the world. You then have to work

together to keep the diseases under

control while also trying to get together

to swap cards to find the cures.

This game can actually be emotional

with highs and lows and high fives as

you win and a communal sulk when

the game wins.

There are a lot of expansions to build up your game challenges including two

“legacy” versions where you play Pandemic style games and how well you do,

actually changes things in subsequent games. Cards get ripped, stickers change the

board and new events and roles are revealed. It’s a single use game but can last

months and is a hell of a ride!

Click here if you’re interested in the various versions (UK Link / USA Link).

Who’s it for?

As it’s a co-operative game where you all win or lose together it can be played by

families and couples as well as solo players playing multiple roles.

Be warned – it is addictive!
