Five exceptional reads (and one fine, fine wine!)
In Grown Ups, Marian Keyes introduces us to the Cawseys. Two brothers, their lovely, talented
wives
and a host of children ... they’re a happy bunch. But under the surface, things are a
little
murky. Bulimia. Compulsive shopping. One adoring husband, the other a bit of a sod.
When secrets are revealed they all have to take a good look at themselves. es. A wonderful
read. Penguin, R220 • After her entire family is gunned down following her
journalist husband’s tell-all profile about the drug lord of a new cartel,
You’ll smell fresh lime zest, Lydia Quixano Pérez is forced to flee with her eight-year-old son. The
elderflower, freshly cut grass two soon find themselves transformed into migrants, having to ride
and sweet bell pepper; you’ll La Bestia ... trains that make their way north toward the United States,
taste Cape gooseberry and the only place they think they’ll be safe. A story about a mother on
green melon ... Steenberg the run – all too real, completely heartbreaking, Jeanine Cummins’
Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is American Dirt is absolutely gripping (and is massively controversial
vibrant and fresh and lively. in the USA). Headline, R302 • Every morning, four women swim off
Just like the conversation an Australian beach. Theresa with two kids and a disintegrating
at book club. Around R145 marriage, lonely widow Marie, Elaine from England who’s finding it
from steenbergfarm.com. hard to settle, and 25-year-old Leanne with only herself to rely on. The
women become friends in The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle –
a heart-warming tale of survival, laughter and true friendship through h
good times and (sometimes very) bad. Sophie Green has written a
gorgeously fulfilling story. Little Brown, R325 • Who Did You Tell? is
Lesley Kara’s dark psychological thriller about Astrid, who, in her battle tle
against alcoholism, reluctantly moves back in with her mother. Astrid’s
focusing on recovery, going to meetings, confessing her misdeeds,
making amends to those she’s wronged. But someone knows exactly
what Astrid’s running from and won’t stop until she learns that some
mistakes can’t be corrected – mistakes you have to pay for. Penguin
Random House, R290 • Hiding from their stepfather with his younger
brother, Michael sees his stepfather driven away in the trunk of a
stranger’s car. As a witness to what results in a murder, Michael is in
danger – and as more bodies appear, it becomes clear the killer wants
vengeance. Karen Rose’s Into the Dark is a terrifically gripping read!
Treat the gin lover in your life to a gin-themed 50ml
hand and nail cream! Available in three quirky sayings:
‘I’ll gin to that!’, ‘You are the gin to my tonic!’ and ‘Keep
your gin up!’. R39 from niftygifts.co.za.
Live the Tiki life
Inspired by the tropical exotica
of the 1950s’ island-style cocktail
bars, this Copeland Tiki Gin has
classic London Dry ingredients
(think juniper, lemon peel,
coriander) making sure it is very
much a gin, but also has an exotic
mix of cloves, cassia and ginger –
often associated with spiced rums.
Tonka bean, rummy molasses and
real pineapple add a deliciousness
that takes you to a beach bar ...
Think Tiki cocktails like the Mai
Tai and the Singapore Sling. And
what exactly is Tiki? It was created
in the 1950s by cocktail legend
Don the Beachcomber, when
post-war Americans were looking
for escapism. They found it in
Don’s kitschy beach decor, island
motifs and over the top drinks
served in mystical mugs with the
faces of Polynesian gods adorned
with exotic fruit and flowers. Hefty
pours of rum and potent secret
syrups made the Tiki experience
a heady world to get lost in. But
Tiki’s not just about rum. Many of
the cocktails included gin … so
hello Copeland Tiki Gin. Besides
cocktails, it’s perfectly happy
mixed with tonic and a signature
pineapple garnish – a dried or
fresh pineapple wheel, but other
exotic pairings are encouraged
… fresh juice blends or ginger ale
garnished with the vibrant, the
colourful and the exotic … edible
flowers, mint sprigs, whole star
anise and cinnamon quills. Sounds
appealing? Add to the experience
with a bottle of Copeland Rum.
Your drinks trolley, and your
friends, will thank you. R395 a
bottle. Details: copelandrum.com

The Randfontein Show has a lot to offer – tasty food, live entertainment, interesting
highlight. Hundreds of women from all over came together ther to show support for their
raised from the entrance fee was donated to Just In Time Baby Sanctuary that
t just 34 years old she is
the owner of the popular
and successful Donna’s
Health and Fitness, but
following her dreams
has been a long
and bumpy road.
She was just two
and a half when
she took an
interest in gymnastics and exercising.
Donna used to roll around and do
cartwheels and handstands which she
copied from what she saw on TV. She
nagged her parents endlessly to take
her for proper classes until they one
day took her seriously enough and
gave in. When she was seven years
old she finally got the opportunity
to join a gymnastics class and get
proper training. She went on to
achieve provincial colours for seven
consecutive years. That set the ball
rolling for her fitness journey. During
her school career, she also excelled at
netball and athletics.
‘Although my passion has always
been health and fitness, I
was also good at art and
photography and I had
a knack for film, so my
teachers, friends and
family encouraged
me to move in that
direction after finishing
school because they
didn’t believe there
was a future in fitness at
that point. I did a four-year
12 Get It Joburg West April 2020

honours degree in design and I
started my own business. I wanted
to use my creativity to make a
difference in people’s lives by
telling their stories, but it didn’t
work out that way. No matter how
hard I tried, I wasn’t happy so I took
the leap and enrolled to do a twoyear
diploma in exercise science.
‘While I studied, I continued to
work in production and as a
swimming instructor in order to
pay off my student loan’.
Donna has since done seven
sub qualifications which took an
additional one and a half years and
she is currently busy with another
sub qualification in nutrition as
well as an advanced certification in
exercise science.
When she started helping people
become healthier and more
confident, she realised that she
was exactly in the field she needed
to be in. Now, Donna’s Health and
Fitness focuses on training for
women and men of all ages and
sizes, offering cardio kickboxing
and cross-training, circuit classes,
personal training, Rebounce,
Spinning, Yogalates, The Weight
Studio, an in-house dietitian, inhouse
biokineticist and a state-ofthe-art
medical machine, allowing
them to accurately measure each
individual’s body composition and
health status. She is determined
and although it sounds like a
cliché, she is very hard-working.
‘Even being diagnosed with
chronic asthma and my three
pregnancies couldn’t stop me. I
worked and exercised until the day
before my youngest was born in
2017. I feel very proud and humblelooking
back on my journey. I’m
aware of the fact that it can change
in a heartbeat so I always work
hard and take nothing for granted.
I plan to do a qualification in lifecoaching
as it goes hand in hand
with leading a healthy life.’
Women’s health is particularly
important to her. Donna not only
loves to make women feel more
confident in their bodies but she
also focuses a lot on pre- and postnatal
exercises.
What we love most about Donna
is her very witty sense of humour.
Image: Chene Strauss Photography
She loves joking and making people
laugh. Although Donna is careerdriven,
she tries not to take life too
seriously. And ... if you’re wondering if
Donna ever feels as lazy as the rest of
us, the answer is yes! Just like anyone
else, there are days that she isn’t in
the mood to exercise.
‘Some days I want to take a break
from exercising but I know how
important exercise is, especially for
my asthma so I have to stay on track.
On those days, I put on my tights,
work-out shirt and takkies and I just
start to exercise. Once you’ve started,
you realise that it’s not that bad and
by the time you are done, you are
happy that you pushed through it.
The secret is to take it one day at
a time.’
She grew up in Krugersdorp and
spent an exciting gap year in
Scotland, but returned home to put
down roots.
‘I have always looked up to my
parents who have been married for
more than 40 years. I have a sister
and two brothers with whom I have
a very close relationship. Although
everyone encouraged me to move
into design, they always supported
my decision to move into fitness
too. My family has always been very
supportive of me, particularly my
parents, but my husband is still my
biggest supporter. He believes in me
Short & sweet:
What is your least
favourite exercise? I
love running but hate
treadmills.
In your fridge ...
Lots of fruit and
veggies.
Guilty pleasure? My
mom’s macaroni and
cheese with bacon bits.
Who would play you
in a film about your
life? Natalie Portman.
What do you listen to
when you exercise?
Paramore, Muse and
Queen.
What is your go-to
workout outfit? Highwaisted
tights and a
loose three-quarter top.
even more than I believe in myself.
I’ve known him since Grade 2, but we
only ended up together after school.
We fell madly in love and after he
got his third proper paycheck, he
bought me a ring and now we have
been married for eight years. I think
our marriage is so strong because
we were best friends before we fell
in love. We now have three beautiful
children who are very active and
enjoy copying me when they see
me exercising.’
While Donna doesn’t really like to
cook, she spends a lot of time in the
kitchen, preparing organic meals
from scratch for her family. She might
have put her creative career behind
her, but she still enjoys breaking
away from the hard work. She likes
to play guitar and piano and sings
when she finds the time.
‘My hubby and I used to occasionally
hike on weekends but that went out
the door when we became parents.
Now we visit friends and family
over the weekend, but I need one
day or at least half a day to relax
and recharge.’
Look out for Donna while she’s
taking a jog in the neighbourhood
… you cannot miss her as she is
always smiling! Details: 072 243
DIAMOND
in the rough ...
Randfontein’s Mampho Maoyi doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. We chat to this young
and inspiring engineering geologist who recently became the first black female lecturer in
her faculty at the University of Pretoria.
M
ampho is just
as comfortable
behind a large desk
in her new office
at the University
of Pretoria as she
is on a mining site.
Although she is still young, she is
ambitious, friendly and takes her job
very seriously. She is an esteemed
academic and hopes to inspire young
girls who dream big, just like she did.
WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST
IN GEOLOGY?
Since Randfontein is a mining town,
pursuing a mining career was not
far-fetched. In my matric year, there
was an Anglo-American programme
where I was introduced to different
career paths within the mining
industry. Back then, I already
knew that I wanted to specialise
in rock engineering.
WHAT DOES A GEOLOGIST DO?
Geology encompasses an
understanding of the Earth, which
includes the materials present on
Earth, the geological processes they
have undergone as well as changes
that occur. Geology is very broad and
I am referred to as an engineering
geologist, which is the applied
science of geology. I am a full-time
lecturer for final year and honours
students in rock mechanics and rock
engineering respectively. I am also
doing my doctoral studies, where I am
continuously doing research for the
university and the South African Water
Research Commission.
THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?
I started consulting and just seven
months later, I got to be a full-time
lecturer at only 26 years old. I’m
thrilled because it is not a position
that comes easy. You need to prove
your competency and it has a lot of
responsibilities. I am grateful for the
other faculty members who gave me
the opportunity to grow. I also got
the opportunity to present my first
publication at the 7th African Young
Geotechnical Engineers Conference in
2019, and mine was named the best
presentation. I was also scheduled
to present my research at the 36th
International Congress in Delhi
between 2 and 8 March, but due to
the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the
conference was postponed. There
has already been a lot of highlights
in my career but most importantly, I
have inspired so many other women
out there by becoming the first
black woman to be appointed in an
academic position in the department.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?
I am passionate about research and I
want to become a National Research
Foundation rated researcher. Maybe
people will refer to me as Professor
Maoyi in a few years’ time.
IN YOUR FREE TIME ...
I love to go to the gym and I have
recently joined a fight club, which I
enjoy. When I’m not working, studying
or exercising, I like spending time with
my friends and family.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR
FAMILY LIFE ...
My parents, brother and sister are
all hard-working and somewhat
academically inclined. My parents
have always been very supportive in
TO THE POINT:
Morning person or a night owl?
I can work in the morning, during
the day or at night, but I like to take
naps in between.
If a genie granted you one wish,
what would you wish for? To win
the lottery to be able to afford and
maintain a yacht!
Your favourite stone or mineral?
Alexandrite.
Your guilty pleasure? I love good
food, it does not matter what it is as
long as it is good. I gym a lot but I
cheat a lot on my diet because I just
love tasty, good food.
whatever my siblings and I wanted
to do with our lives and for that, I will
always be eternally grateful. We do
not come from one of the wealthiest
families but our parents taught us
to work hard to achieve all of our
dreams. We come from an area where
your dreams can easily be shattered
because of other societal factors, but
we always had our parents’ support.
HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS
DESCRIBE YOU?
I am very driven and focused. I am
friendly and laid-back, but I will not let
anyone stand in the way of my career
and my dreams.
Picking up
THE THREADS
Could thread lifting be the easiest answer yet to keep you looking your best more
naturally? Dr Zandia Bronkhorst from Ruimsig’s Heaven on Earth gives us the low-down.
Photographer: RENSKE DE KLERK
Wife of an international conference
speaker and mom of two boys who
she claims ‘keep her on her toes’,
Zandia always had an interest in the
beauty industry. She not only has an
extensive list of academic achievements,
she’s done advanced training
with some of the top medical
aesthetic trainers in the world. Last
year she attended an exclusive Beauty
Academy in Paris and Brussels, and
What you need to know about Zandia:
will be going to the Experts Summit in
Monaco in June this year. Zandia is an
expert on various treatments such as
neurotoxins, fillers, thread lifts, lipolysis,
bionutri-lifts and other skin rejuvenation
treatments. She is also the author of a
book titled Sleeping Beauty Awakened
and a keynote speaker at seminars for
women. Details: Heaven on Earth Skin,
‘So many times I hear these
words echo from the walls in my
practice: ‘Aging is not for the faint
of heart’. Although getting older
is unavoidable, you can still age
gracefully and avoid surgery if you
choose to do a thread lift.’
What is a thread lift?
It is a minimally invasive procedure
during which temporary sutures
are used to pull the skin back
slightly. It produces a subtle but
visible tightening and lifting of
the skin. Although the main aim
of the threads is to lift the skin, it
has an additional advantage that
it combats ageing by stimulating
collagen and increasing the
blood flow to the area. Collagen
production improves skin texture
and elasticity, while eliminating fine
lines and wrinkles. The procedure
can be done on various parts of the
face and body to help reduce the
effects of ageing and gravity, or to
rejuvenate the skin. It is a solution
to both men and women who
want to avoid the commitment and
downtime required for a facelift.
The different types:
There are three main types of
thread lifts, which can be classified
according to the type of material
the thread is made of – polydioxanone
(PDO), polylactic acid (PLA)
and polycaprolactone (PCA).
The most popular thread lift procedure
I perform is the PDO thread
lift. Due to its cost-effectiveness,
limited downtime and low risk
18 Get It Joburg West April 2020

Before
After two weeks
involved, it is celebrated by many
of my patients. It is made from a
biocompatible material that is safely
reabsorbed by the body. There
are various types of PDO threads
(floating, barbed threads and nonbarb
threads), but your doctor may
choose to use different threads for
you, depending on your skin lifting
and rejuvenation needs.
PLA threads are resorbable and
stimulate collagen over a longer
time than PDO threads do. They are
mainly indicated to lift the skin and
contour the structures of the face
by using cones instead of barbs.
PCA threads are the latest on the
market and also have the longest
longevity. A collagen structure is
formed that provides support to the
tissue and prevents it from sagging.
How is it performed?
The point of entry is numbed with a
local anaesthetic. The invisible fine
threads are then placed underneath
the skin via sharp or blunt
Directly after
tip needles (called
cannulas) and pulled
to obtain the desired
skin lift, then they are
secured and trimmed (cut)
at the entry point. There is some
discomfort during the procedure, but
due to local anaesthetic, improved
techniques and products, patients are
experiencing less pain, making the
thread-lift procedure a more comfortable
experience. Depending on the
areas treated and the type of threads,
the procedure takes about 15 to 30
minutes.
Any downtime?
The thread lift procedures are almost
completely non-invasive, which results
in little or no downtime. The mild
side-effects (such as swelling, redness,
discomfort and dimpling of the skin)
usually subside after a week.
Who’s the best candidate?
One size does not fit all if it comes
to thread lift procedures. It is vital
to have the right type of thread lift
The average
price for PDO
threads – to lift:
(barb threads) R7
000 – R10 000 (six
to eight threads).
PLA threads: R7 000
– R14 000.
procedure with the right doctor.
The ideal candidate for the thread
lift procedure are patients with mild
to moderate signs of skin laxity, usually
ranging from their late thirties
to early sixties. Since the thread lift
procedure is so low risk, it is a good
alternative for patients who are not
suited for surgery as a result of agerelated
conditions (uncontrolled
high blood pressure, cardiovascular
diseases, GI tract diseases and type
2 diabetes); or those who want to
avoid the recovery time and risks
involved in undergoing surgery.
What are some of the misconceptions
about a thread lift?
It gives you an unnatural appearance:
Usually, after the threads have ‘settled’,
which takes about one to two
weeks, the result feels and looks
natural. The skin will be more rejuvenated,
lifted and firmer, resulting
in a naturally healthy-looking skin.
The threads are visible: Only if the
threads are placed too
superficially. If they are
positioned correctly it
will roughly take two
weeks to settle from
any visibility.
When will I see results
and how long
do they last?
An immediate lift of
the facial contours is
evident directly after the
thread lift procedure. Although
it may give you a slightly tighter
result at first, it settles after about a
week and feels much more natural.
In about eight to 15 months the
threads would have been dissolved,
depending on the type, amount
and location of the thread used,
although the results last much
longer than this due to the increase
in collagen production. Many of
my patients comment that the
improvement after the thread lift
lasted for up to two years.
Any side-effects?
Although the thread lift procedure
is low risk, there could be side
effects, such as swelling, redness,
bruising, mild procedural pain,
puckering of the skin and superficially
placed threads that are visible.
A chic setting
Easter is all about being grateful and spending time with friends and family around the
dinner table. Ruimsig’s Alice Pretorius of Alice Art Gallery shares how to break away from
the bunnies and pastel colours in Easter table decor.
Alice’s gorg Easter table was inspired
by the book Food at the Time of the
Bible by Miriam Deinberg Vamosh.
She shares her tips for a non-pastel
and bunny-free Easter table:
• Since we are straying from the
normal pastel theme for Easter, we are
going dramatic, so you can either go
minimal or over the top with the
table decor. Don’t be afraid to mix and
match colours and patterns. Use what
you have!
• Instead of serving the typical
chocolate bunnies and hot cross buns,
go traditional and serve unleavened
bread, lamb, hard-boiled eggs and
spiced wine with fresh pomegranates,
olives, grapes, figs and dates – it’s
yummy and healthy.
• If you have a long table with one big
centrepiece, add two or four smaller
centrepieces, depending on the
length of the table.
• Candle-lit dinners will never go out
of style, but instead of spreading the
candles all over the table, bundle
them up at the end of the table for a
dramatic effect.
Details: 011 958 1392 or www.aliceart.
Unleavened bread
Incorporate the food into the
centrepieces by using fruit and leaves
from your garden. If you want to bring
in a religious aspect to your table
decor, you can add a ram’s horn.
Spiced wine recipe:
Ingredients:
125ml white wine, 1 cinnamon
stick, 180ml honey, 2 dates, 1 bay
leaf and another 1,8l white wine.
Method:
Heat 125ml white wine with the
honey until dissolved. Remove
from heat and add bay leaf,
cinnamon and chopped dates.
Add remaining wine and simmer
for one hour, stirring occasionally.
Before serving, remove bay leaf
and cinnamon. Can be served
hot or at room temperature.
Figs, grapes,
dates, olives
and nuts ...
IN THE
GARDEN
We’ve put together our top garden tasks and tips for the month.
Indoor plant of the month:
Cyclamen is a traditional indoor winter
flower, but none are as flashy as the new
‘Indiaka’ range with their two-tone colour
contrasting blooms, extra flower-power
and compact growth. Plants flower best if
given bright indirect light in a warm room.
Don’t over-water but keep the soil slightly
moist. If the pot is in a saucer, empty the
saucer 30 minutes after watering. Fertilise
once a month with a liquid fertiliser for
flowers. Remove dead flowers by pulling
out the stem from the base of the plant.
This will encourage it to produce more
flowers. Details: www.plantimex.co.za.
Always forgetting to water your plants or forgetting the correct amount of
water they need to flourish? The Parrot Pot (R1 999) is a smart flowerpot that
helps your plants thrive. The self-watering system and four built-in sensors
monitor your plant around the clock. From light to temperature and soil
quality, in real-time, you can learn about your plant's specific needs through
customised recommendations that help you better care for your plant. The 'Perfect
Drop' irrigation system waters your plant when it needs it, with the Parrot Pot also
automatically adapting to the plant's natural life-cycle and adjusting water consumption
accordingly, giving your plant just the right amount of water at the right time. You can also
avoid coming home to wilted plants after being away on holiday with the 'Plant Sitter' mode
that ensures up to a month of unattended care. Details: www.futurama.co.za.
We’re planting:
Nemesia ‘Nesia Denim’, which is fragrant with large, dark blue blooms. It pairs well with
other perfumed autumn and spring annuals such as pansies, alyssum and stocks. With
its open, semi-upright growth, (30cm high and wide), it can be used as a soft border for
other plants with broad, upright or dense foliage. Use it in containers, hanging baskets
and as a bedding plant. Plant in full sun, in moist well-drained soil. Regular watering and
feeding encourage continuous blooms. Extend its flowering into summer with ample
water during hot periods. Details: www.ballstraathof.co.za.
Rose care
Cut often for the vase, if not
remove the dead flowers
regularly and look out for
fungal infections such as Black
Spot and Powdery Mildew.
Adding a balanced fertiliser like
5:1:5 overcomes the natural
start of dormancy and ensures
flowering in winter. Keep on
spraying to avoid defoliation
due to Black Spot infection.
There is no
planet B!
Let us nurture our
planet Earth by using
sustainable practices and
nourishing our soils so
that they can continue
to produce healthy
food for us all. Besides
the fact that there is
no planet B, we have a
good reason this month
to pamper our planet
because Tuesday, 7 April
is World Health Day and
on Wednesday 22 April
it is Earth Day, as well
as International Mother
Earth Day. How about
celebrating these days
by eating healthily and
planting any plant that
will make you happy,
and the Earth a better
place to live on!
Garden tasks ...
• Plant primulas to brighten shady
areas, pansies and violas in sunny
beds, containers and hanging
baskets. Poppies look beautiful
among the roses.
• Daffodils, freesia, ranunculus and
indigenous spring bulbs are best
planted after Easter.
• Scatter-sow Namaqualand daisies
wherever you want a splash of
colour.
• Water once a week.
• Fertilise the lawn, perennials, roses
and shrubs for the last time before
winter and water well afterwards.
• Plant up your winter veggie
garden, sow broad beans,
beetroot, broccoli, cabbage,
carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, peas,
spinach and Swiss chard.
Reasons to visit
Emdoneni Lodge 5Everyone loves a little bush getaway now and then. Couple that with an up-close-andpersonal
wildcat experience, a long walk along a pristine beach to visit a bat cave and a
sunset cruise with hippos and crocs . . . and you’ve got a holiday worth remembering.
Ideal location
With the big five Hluhluwe/
iMfolozi Game Reserve and
South Africa’s first UNESCO
World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso
Wetland Park, just a stone’s throw
away, Emdoneni Lodge couldn’t
be more perfectly positioned for
a wilderness and adventure-filled
holiday. After just a short two-anda-half-hour
drive from the King
Shaka International Airport, visitors
can completely immerse themselves
in a haven of natural beauty
unlike anywhere else in the world.
Smiles, song and
creature comforts
The rooms are quaint
and cozy, the food wholesome
and comforting and the staff full
of smiles at Emdoneni Lodge. The
privately-owned, three-star lodge’s
accommodation options include
standard or deluxe chalets, Africanstyle
rondavels or the private Windfall
Cottage. Dinners are either in
the restaurant or alongside a bonfire
in the beautiful outdoor boma area
where you can sip a glass of good
red wine as you tuck into a yummy
dinner and enjoy being serenaded
by the multi-talented kitchen and
bar staff. Breakfasts are a treat with
all the trimmings, including yummy
homemade croissants and pastries.

Close up with the cats
There are few times in one’s life
when you can stand right next
to two cheetahs as they laze and
roll about, gently gnawing on each other’s
ears. One of the main drawcards for visitors
to the lodge is, of course, the on-site
Emdoneni Cat project (now called Zululand
Cat Conservation), which has been in
operation for more than 25 years. Guests
visiting the project are given a guided tour
of the facility and invited to get up close
and personal with the cheetahs, African
wild cats, caracals and servals on the property.
There is no petting allowed and, since
its inception, more than 40 cats have been
successfully released back into the wild.
Delicious homegrown
spoils
Nothing beats delicious
sweet homegrown treats. And Emdoneni
(and Hluhluwe) are home to
two amazing natural spoils – honey
and pineapples. Bee-autiful Honey
(all-natural, hand-extracted honey
made by the busy bees living in the
surrounding bush at Emdoneni) and
Mama Annanas pineapple products
(including a to-die-for spicy pineapple
relish, dried pineapples and pineapple
juice) are must-trys!
Wilderness adventures
The small coastal town of St Lucia,
less than an hour’s drive from
Emdoneni, is a treasure trove of
natural beauty and protected wilderness.
It is not uncommon here to see hippos
strolling down the street, or spot rare
and endangered birdlife in the surrounding
coastal forest. The town borders the
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, home to four
of the big five and 220km of protected
coastline. A walk along Mission Rocks beach
is a must. Clamber over the rugged rocks
as you head north along the pristine beach
towards the sea caves that are home to
thousands of fruit-eating bats. Enjoy lunch
at a Cape Vidal picnic spot under the trees
before swimming or snorkling in the warm
Indian Ocean. And then, what better way to
end the day than with a sunset cruise along
Lake St Lucia, sipping a G&T as you watch a
family of hippo frolicking half-submerged
in the water before they slowly emerge to
graze at dusk? Sheer African paradise.
