o say pollution is everywhere around us will be
Tan understatement. Pollution today is in and
around us, permeating the very structure of life
on earth. From our air to the soil, the food that we eat
to the water we drink, all are polluted to a varying
degree.
The problem of pollution is as ancient as the human
civilization itself and can be first traced back to the
times when man made fire for domestic purposes. The
soot in the pre-historic caves is witness to how man
tamed fire but lacked proper ventilation to keep it from
polluting his immediate environment. The next steps
towards civilization and development, both in terms of
social and economic, started adding more pollution to
the environment. Metal forging, burning of coal and
wood, transportation involving horses and ships and
the growing population steadily began adding to
pollution.
Pollution, as we know it today, is the aftereffect of the
greatest economic development in the history of
mankind, the Industrial Revolution. Setting up huge
industries did fuel economic growth, but took the
environment as it’s collateral damage. Huge
concentration of population near the industries often
saw outbreaks like cholera because of the pollutants
that rendered the air, water and earth unfit for
humankind. That is also when social reformers realized
that pollution needs to be curtailed as soon as possible.
In 1870, Berlin, one among the many cities where
sanitary conditions were the worse, rose to the
occasion and by 1906, it was transformed into the most
modern and organized city of its times. Since then, the
official war between pollution and environmentalists,
backed by their Governments started, and continues
till date.
In 1974, the Indian Government established The Central
Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India, a statutory
organisation under the Ministry of Environment, Forest
and Climate Change (Mo.E.F.C). Headquartered in
Delhi the Board has seven zonal offices and five
laboratories, and an employee count of around 500
including scientists, engineers and environmental
protection specialists.
However, the problem of pollution isn’t just for the
Government and the activists to fight. It affects one
and all, and needs to be tackled at every level, starting
right from one individual. Right now, the world is
witnessing the effects of pollution causing actions like
never before. The situation is panicky, but panic leads

to no solution. Instead of creating a ruckus and opting
for the blame game, everyone should put their act
together. A single act of mindfulness towards the
environment can make a difference we don’t fathom
during the act.
Also, the actions should start from where the cycle was
set i.e. the Industries. It is agreed that most of the
industries have been following pollution control
methods. But as we can see, that hasn’t been enough.
The industries need to utilize modern, updated and
more scientific solutions to deal with the high-level of
pollution today. Also, the solutions should be
implemented throughout their production or
manufacturing cycle. And to determine their needs
and suggest solutions, they should turn to experts who
have been dealing with the menace at the forefront.
This issue of “The 10 Most Admired Pollution Control
Companies in India” is dedicated to the environmental
heroes who have been fighting pollution at places that
contribute the most. Through dedication, expertise,
scientific know-how and a will to share the
responsibility towards the environment, these

pollution.

hat differentiates ‘Earth’ from the other
Wplanets in the solar system is the presence of
life (at least until we find and contact life on
other planets). Breathable air, as we know, is one of the
fundamental elements that supports life. However, at the
same time as you read this article, pollutants are being
added to the atmosphere by developed, developing and
under-developed nations at an alarming rate.
People and governments are completely aware of the
hazardous effects of pollution on health and the
environment. With incidences of respiratory diseases
rising and ‘Save the planet’ becoming a global slogan, a
lot needs to be done at both individual and societal level.
However, a large portion of the population and industries
in India and some other parts of the world do not
implement the laid down norms either due to ignorance
or lack of finances. The Government and the industries,
both need to work together to bring about greater
awareness about the hazards of poor indoor air quality
and how it can be improved.
Awareness is just one part. We need measurable action
and helping the awakened in translating awareness to
action is American Air Filter (AAF) International, a

The Turning Point
The idea that incepted the journey of AAF commenced
nearly a century ago in the USA. The automobile
industry was facing a major problem in keeping dust
from spoiling the freshly painted cars. Bill Reed, a
skilled engineer and entrepreneur, developed the Reed
Air Filter in 1921 for the automobile industry to keep off
the dust. The concept was so successful that this laid the
foundation for the company which is today a global
leader in air filtration. To grow the business, Reed joined
forces with seven other firms to create American Air
Filter Co. in 1929.
AAF International entered India in 2006 recognising the
fact that clean air is critical in developing countries like
India. The growing number of centrally air-conditioned
buildings allowed the company to invest and set up its
first manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. After three
years of successful operations, AAF started another unit
in Noida. Recently, AAF has opened its regional office in
Electronic City Bengaluru which will also serve as the
centre of excellence of EEMEA, SAARC and CIS
countries.

Responsible Recycling
RecycleKaro adopts scientific methods and processes for
recycling that are approved by the Pollution Control Board.
It has got the Responsible recyclers certificate and is in the
process of being ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004
certified by the Government. The company understands the
importance of operating in an environmental friendly
manner. It makes sure that all manufacturers it deals with
have a certification by the pollution control board. It also
makes sure that they operate using the most eco-friendly
practices. The annual capacity for recycling of e-waste at its
current Wada facility is 2400 MT, with a recycling rate of
99%. RecycleKaro is soon going to setup Recycling facility
for Aluminium, Copper and Plastics in Feb 2020 with a
total capacity of 5400 MT/A. The facility will harbour
state-of-the-art furnaces and it will be a fully mechanical
process with machinery installation already in progress.
RecycleKaro is soon going to operate India’s first Lithium
battery recycling facility in WADA, Mumbai with an annual
capacity of 2000 MT. It will be a hydro-metallurgy plant
that facilitates lithium battery packaging and recovering
very precious metals like Lithium, cadmium etc. This plant
is going to be operational in few days. Doing this on a very
large scale, the company has set an extensive collection
network across the country with more than 1200+ touch
points, comprising of a mix of more than 250 corporate
clients (Infosys, RBDI, Bark, GAIL and other MNCs),
schools & colleges, Government institutions and residential
areas, where it is procuring e-Waste online (Evergreen
RecycleKaro app) & offline.
It is also looking forward to operating a Refurbishing center
at Rabale MIDC.
Awareness – Key to Recycling

RecycleKaro strives to reduce the carbon footprint of its
services to minimize the negative impacts and enhance the
positive impact on the environment. To manage the same, it
undertakes Waste management audits of its facilities. The
company also understands the importance of awareness

IS Team: What is the story behind the founding of the
organization?
Mr. Rao: Mr.Raman Sharma was to join his family
business, a large 100% export house of customized
carpets and handlooms, well established for +40 years,
but the E-waste idea was lit during his studies in the
United Kingdom.
Coming back to India to start afresh from scratch was a
huge challenge.24-36 months on the job training as an
apprentice in the Informal sector made him aware of the
ground-level realities and the way e-waste business is
done in the informal sector.
Thus acquiring key knowledge skills technical and nontechnical
about the industry, the first plant in 50k sq.ft in
Haryana was set up. Subsequently, two more states of the
art plants have been added and the addition of the 4th
plant is on.
IS Team: State the challenges faced by the founder of

Mr. Rao: There is no easy road to success and we didn't
have one too. The initial challenges that we faced

A Menace for India
Pollution has always been an area of concern for India. For a country like ours, you can imagine the amount
of pollution occurring each day due to the large population. Water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution,
etc. have negative/adverse effects on the environment and the living beings. As we all know, too much
of anything is hazardous, and same goes in the case of pollution.
Today, noise pollution or sound pollution is one of the major matter of concern in India. Sadly, many are unaware
of the hazardous effects of noise pollution. It is a daily dilemma to bear with the unnecessary havoc created on
the streets, the blasting loudspeakers during festive times, the bursting crackers, etc. Significant number of
health threats are caused to humans and animals due to exposure to loud noise. Some of the threats to health

SLEEPING DISORDERS
Both humans and animals face sleep related issues due to noise
pollution. When the human body is exposed to prolonged sound, it gets
stressed. Noise pollution is a problem that makes people and animals get
restless in different ways. Being in a noisy place, it is difficult for humans
to get complete and proper sleep. Inadequate sleep in return causes
issues like tiredness, fatigue, discomfort, etc. It is the same with animals,
