EDITORS NOTE
As months become weeks and weeks become days, we start to feel the vibrations of
what’s to come. Like a child waiting on Christmas or the next birthday revellers starts to
anticipate as designers start to show their art so as to entice those that are brave and
bold, those who live for these moments. Trinidad, Jamaica, Domnica, Brazil to name a
few as pass. The torch has been lit and button is in play Ibiza the new Soca playground
is in full swing as bands are launching weekly and the fever of carnival is slowly but
surely taking over the air. 2019 has seen a great change in the movement of soca not
just on the level of the events but also in the actions of the artist and producers. For
a genre that is still not recognised outside of the Caribbean or more so doesn’t leave
each island, apart from seasonally, yes carnival time, this is when the rest of the world
recognises this infectious sound and lose their insecurities and welcomes its.2019 as
seen a vast production and music release not just targeting each islands carnival or just
Trinidad carnival but just music been released as artists has realised the importance
of giving the lovers of this sound new music they have now accepted that there’s a
demand that they need to supply. Reminding those that are not always in tuned to
the carnival spirit, apart for that bank holiday weekend in August, we say yes soca is a
genre and carnival is always taking place somewhere in the world. The music needs to
be recognized as a genre but the major platforms and labels because there’s a demand
and a market for it, though not a huge as Reggae and dancehall of hip-hop and R&B
but it just a matter of time.
BUSINESS
the accounts navigator
Written by: Tricia Blake
In this month’s issue, we catch up with Award winning Accountant Andrea
Richards of Accounts Navigator.
At what age would you say you knew you were going to be an Accountant?
I was 9. I Remember my mom was looking for a job. She would carry home
the Evening Standard, And I’d go through it. I was always good at math in
school, so my thing was what job am I going to do. And there was the word
bookkeeper, I had to look up the word because I didn’t know what it meant,
I looked at what a bookkeeper did, I was good at math and I’m money
motivated. I was going to be a successful accountant earning big money.
Are we there, a successful accountant earning big money?
Well, I have my own accountancy practice, which I’ve been running for the
last 15 years I’ve only ever worked within the accounts field so I think I am
reaching my goals.
What more do you think accounts navigator can achieve?
Someone to take over, when I’m ready to retire, and do other things. I would
love the business to continue to run and still get an income from it.
Within the next five years are you looking to retire?
No, I’m retiring in the next 12 years. I intend to retire by the time I’m 55. And
so that is where I’m driving the business to, making sure there will be people
to run business.
Is there anybody that you think you’d be able to trust with your baby?
It’s always hard to find someone you trust with your baby, but my aim as
always been to promote from inside the business. Everyone that comes to
me, learns a lot from me, and I want them to grow within the business and
hopefully they’ll stay. the reward would be that they would be running this
business at some point.
7.
DEYAH MAGAZINE
How big is the business?
Currently there’s six of us in the office. Me the finance director, and then we
have office manager Cassie Nixon, we have a qualified accountant position
currently going, then we have our semi senior is Kadisha Madonna and our
two bookkeepers.
What are the different strands of Accountancy, how different people can
pick up different sectors of your business?
Accounts navigator associates offer retainer packages, which includes all
accountancy services for small to medium sized business, we run a 12-month
package that will cover all your bookkeeping, payroll, year end, and Company
House requirements. We like to say we are your accounts department. We
also offer individual services, some people just want payroll, some year end
and some just want us to keep the flow of their company’s house stuff, we
will do anything to help and assist a business grow. One of our main things is
helping businesses grow, not just calculating their accounts.
How do you help business grow?
I tell all my clients for your business to grow, you need to understand
the figures within your business. To understand your figures, rather than
coming to us at the end of the year, and just letting us do your year end and
submitting your accounts. At that stage, it’s too late for us to help, you’ve
done your 12 months of business, and we can’t grow your business, all we’re
doing is calculating your tax for HMRC.
We have a thing called management accounts that we produce on a quarterly
basis or monthly basis, depending on the size of the business, form that
we can tell you what your business is doing, where you are at that standing
point. If you are spending too much money, if you need to claw back money,
we can make plans throughout the year regarding your business and help you
grow it that way.
I noticed that you got an award recently, how did that happen? The
NatWest Awards?
I don’t do awards normally, but it was put to me two days before the
deadline, that I’d been nominated for a be mogul, which is a black enterprise
mogul award by NatWest and Rich Fish and small business. I had two days
to fill in the form, submit. I did that, someone nominated Me. A week later, I
heard I was going to be a winner of a be Mogul which is really nice, because
I’ve never done any form of awards for accounts navigator before.
How did you find the experience, have you now got a thirst for it?
Well, the person that nominated me, is pushing me to do more, she says I’m
well deserving of these awards because of what I’ve been putting in over the
last 15 years.
8.
MAY 2019 #ISSUE 4
Definitely well deserved. Congratulations. So, did you do the whole awards?
I had to do the awards, had to make speech. All those things were very
daunting for me. I don’t do camera. I enjoyed it, we enjoyed the night, I
bought the team along. It was a team effort. Everybody in my team works
really hard. So, I thought it’d be nice for them. I actually got new clients from
it all.
What would you say has been your most valuable lesson throughout your
15-year journey with accounts navigator?
Expect that downs, it’s not going to be easy, when things don’t, go according
to plan. Keep trying, keep trying and try again, it’s not being a smooth road
these 15 years, when things do go wrong, you have to correct them and move
on and move forward. But don’t give up. Just keep moving.
Three words to describe yourself/Business?
The Businesses is my team. I’m not even going to lie. I’ve trained my team
Well; their knowledge does come from me and they still come to me for
advice but I have a very good team. they can just get on with the job. I’m free
to go on holiday, I’m free to leave these premises.
How long did it take you to get to that?
That took time. I’ve been running my business for 15 years. It’s only in the last
seven years, I’ve employed staff. And the team has grown to this level, in the
last four years. Now I’m working on my business rather than in my business.
Thanks to the hard-working people in my team.
DANCEHALL
BUZZ
beenie g
Written by: Mr Wondah
Beenie G AKA Black Lion King A future legend of Dancehall Music and
Ambassador of the music & culture.
You currently have three tracks promoting, is this how you normally push
you music or a new strategy? If yes what made you decide to work like this?
No this is a new strategy, because each single is less than a year out, it is very
important to constantly promote music as you get new listeners every day.
Your latest single holiday is a collaboration, what inspired the track and
how did the collaboration come about?
The track was the brain child of Cio Soprano, who had the beat & idea and
called me & told me he wanted to be involved. We developed the concept
and wrote our verses and then linked up in the studio and made the magic
happened.
You have a song called broken silence, out now, what inspired that song and
what as the response from the fans been like for the song?
Broken Silence was a song that was inspired by my personal dreams &
aspirations, it speaks to anyone who is ambitious of turning their dreams to
reality, it is also of a pan African back ground.
Means to me, is your other single out now, tell us about this song in terms
of, what the song means to you, what inspired it and how you hope it will
impact those who listen to it?
Means to me expresses my love for the Black Woman, and shows that I
appreciate her and treasure her over the vanity of the world, the song is
meant to empower Black woman and pass on a feel-good feeling.
MAY 2019 #ISSUE 4
Living in London which is a melting pot of multiculturalism and diverse
musical influence, how hard is it to remain true to your dancehall origins?
Not hard at all, I was born & raised in Dancehall, I am Dancehall down to the
way I speak, think, talk etc. However, living in London exposes me to different
styles and culture which I embrace as that makes me a more versatile artist.
If you do not realise your musical aspirations, what is your backup plan?
My back up plan is Music, I am Music, it’s what I love, so worse case scenario
if I am not successful as an artist, then I will still be involved in some aspect of
the music & entertainment industry, my talent is a gift given from God, I have
t use it, I can’t waste this gift which has the potential to change my life, my
family & impact the world.
What inspires your creativity?
Life itself is my biggest inspiration.
What is the one hope you have for the genre?
We need an international label for Dancehall /Reggae Music to be published
and distributed through, this is one of my long-term goals in the music & in
life. Gods willing, I will make it happen.
What do you which people will take away from your music, when they listen
to it?
I want them to think and take away the message, in all my song there is a
message doesn’t matter the topic, I am the narrator the poet, the writer so I
always want the listener to think and also feel entertained.
If you could implement one change in the business, what would that change
be and why?
There are several changes that can improve the music, I think the main
change would be more unity, if this happen we can make a greater impact on
the world as the current generation of artist.
How can we find your music and what are you socials?
You can find my music on all major music platforms, YouTube, Spotify,
Amazon, ITunes, Tidal etc.
SOCA BUZZ
trini boi - man on a mission
Written by: Mr Whondah
Rodell Sorzano aka Triniboi Joocie, Born in Port of Spain Trinidad & Tobago
resides in the United Kingdom.
Describe how you felt the first time you heard one of your songs played in
public?
Was very excited yet nervous to see peoples reaction ro the song. I was lucky
enough to hear it on radio before in the party so I had an advantage.
What’s the name of the song and how did it come about?
Easy Fame - was the first official Soca track I recorded .. The message behind
the project was norhing comes easy u need to work hard in order to achieve.
Talking about my journey thus far at the time and what sacrifices I needed to
make in order to make it.
Bed ah Rose is your latest single, it seems to be more reflective song. What
inspired this?
Similar to easy fame.. Bed ah roses is a mature piece of work. Again reflecting
on my journey and rather than singing a party tune I wanted to create
something which reflects of what I’m facing as an up coming artist within
this industry.
How is the song being received?
Locally the response have been overwhelming people loving the positive
message behind the project and anticipating the visuals for the project. Next
step is to market the life out of the project so it gain international recognition.
What is your expectations for this song?
My aim for this project is to show a mature side of me both with the music
and the lyrical content.. Which ive achieved wirh the record my next aim is to
get it out there and Hoepfully reach the masses.
MAY 2019 #ISSUE 4
As a soca artist in the Uk name one thing you’d make compulsory in the
industry if you have the power?
Let the artist be artist and dj be dj.. Alot of the time music go under the
carpet not because the project isn’t good enough but because it gets lost in
the scene because of egos and association. Play the tune if it big!!
Are you a Red or a Blue, (if not which
chose one)? Savory or Sweet.
Red forever (Glory Glory United!!) and
Savoury for sure!!
What’s the most interesting thing about
you that we wouldn’t learn from your
music?
That I love to micro manage because
I’m a perfectionist!
Carnival 2019 are you ok the road?
(Nothing hill)
Of course I will be base with ebony Mas
celebrating Ebony Steelband 50years
anniversary..but will also be floating
through a range of bands performing my
catalogue.
Name one thing you would make compulsory in the industry and one thing
you would chang and why?
Compulsory - every Soca event in the UK must feature a local artist in order to
raise their profile.
Change - have alot more organised between organisations!!!
Is music your only job? In the case that you do not realize all your dreams
through music, do you have a backup plan?
Yes music is my living but I am also a qualified teacher so.. I wouldn’t call it a
backup plan but I say it keeps funds at float.
What’s up with you for the rest of the year?
It’s probably going to be one of the busiest years for me travelling alot in
Europe Ie (Denmark, Rotterdam, Norway and Paris just to name a few as well
as in the caribbean so keep your eyes peeled @triniboijoocie
the list.
1. Skin Preparation
First things first, ensure you are using a suitable moisturiser for your skin
otherwise you may find that your foundation gets oily quickly or your skin
may become dry. Queens with:
Oily & Combination - skin types should use a lightweight oil balancing/
controlling lotion, even better if that lotion offers hydration, quite often
people who think they have oily skin actually have dehydrated skin, as the
skin lacks water so the skin creates more Sebum (oil) to compensate!
Pro Tip: People with Oily skin should stay clear of silicone based primer as
they tend to make skin oily after a period of time. There are a few different
primers on the market that are water based, silica based, clay based, etc.
Normal & Dry - skin types should use a hydrating daily moisturiser, this should
keep the skin hydrated all day and create a perfect base for your makeup.
Extra dry skin types should use a moisturising/ nourishing lotion.
Pro Tip: Wait a few mins for moisturiser to settle in skin before applying the
primer. Although you may have dry skin, do not overload the skin with too
much product - skin should not feel sticky!
Sensitive - skin types should use a soothing-calming moisturiser free from
preservatives and perfumes.
Pro Tip: Stick to Hypoallergenic/ paraben-free /organic products to get
the best of out your skin and makeup. Use a Silica or crème based primer
to apply after your moisturiser, this should make your makeup last without
causing your skin to react.
2. Foundation
Choosing the right foundation is vital to having
makeup that lasts as long as possible, especially
in hot weather conditions. When choosing
consider:
Shade: Ensure your foundation matches your
neck and chest. Those beauties that suffers from
hyper-pigmentation and your neck is slightly
darker than your chest and face (very common
in darker skin tones), match the foundation
shade to your chest and blend into your neck to
even out the colour.
Texture: We all have our preferences on how we like our skin to look, however
if you want to stay looking flawless and shine-free going for an ‘Sheer’ or
‘Illuminous’ foundation isn’t the best idea, especially as you’re going to be
dancing and working up a sweat.
Oily, combination and normal - you’d be better off using a ‘Natural-matte’
foundation or ‘Matte’ liquid/powder foundation, both with medium to full
coverage.
Dry and sensitive - using a ‘velvet-smooth’ foundation with medium-full
coverage would be perfect.
Pro Tip: After applying your foundation, spray a makeup fixing spray all
over face to add extra longevity to your makeup.
3. Eyes
Before applying your eyeshadow be sure to apply an eyelid primer to give
it something to adhere to. Missing this step will result in creases and even
the disappearance of your eyeshadow. Definitely worth the extra time and
expense, this will be the difference between vivid colour, and colour that
you can barely see. There are many different products that can be used as a
Primer to bring out the colour in your eyeshadow and to increase longevity.
You can use concealer, eye pencil, cream eyeshadow - as long as its 3-4
shades lighter than your complexion or white/cream, it will enhance colour!
FYI, I would suggest doing your eye makeup before your foundation to avoid
ruining your foundation, as eye shadow tends to fall down onto the face.
Pro Tip: Ensure you apply and blend evenly. Eyelids should not look caked
with product.
4. Lips
There are many different textures and finishes
when it comes to lip colour. Which are: Matte (also
liquid), Lustre, Satin, Frost, Creme, Tinted, Gloss.
Think about which texture/finish you desire, this
can be a major factor in terms of long-lasting
lips! For instance, Matte textures tend to last a
lot longer on the lips then a Lustre finish - simply
because matte lipsticks adhere to your lips and
dries completely leaving no sheen or moisture,
whereas, lustre or moisturising lipsticks tend to
be absorbed a lot quicker or can transfer when
drinking or eating. I personally prefer to use Matte
or Satin textures for carnival...just saying.
Pro Tip: Regardless of which texture you go for
always remember to, not only, line the lips but also colour the entire lips
with a lip pencil before applying your lipstick/lip gloss. Be sure to choose a
colour that mimics your desire lipstick/gloss. If you are planning on going
for an Ombre effect you will need to have 2 pencil shades and ensure the
entire lip has been covered with pencil.
Pigmented Lips: For those ladies that have Naturally darker lips
(pigmented), instead of using the lip pencil on entire lip, you can add
foundation to your lips, this will give you a neutral base for your lip stick
and also act as a lip primer (would not recommend if using a lip gloss).
NOTE: Do NOT apply too much foundation and make sure you blend it in
properly - lips should not feel wet.
HEALTH
dental care
By Janice Fletcher
In this week’s article we will be sharing with you some useful tips on tooth
brushing and using a dental floss or otherwise. Tooth brushing and flossing
goes hand in hand in order to maintain a very good oral mouth care. Using
the correct technique in tooth brushing is of utmost importance.
Use fluoride toothpaste that has 1450ppm from children 3 years to adults
(check on the package). Again the brand of toothpaste is your preference.
Use a pea size amount of toothpaste.
Use a soft bristle toothbrush with a medium head. This will give you easier
access to all the areas in the mouth.
Always hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle towards the gum line.
• When brushing your teeth move the tooth brush back and forth very
gently within a circular movement over all the surfaces of your teeth top
and bottom.
• Don’t forget to always brush your tongue as well.
• Hard brushing is not ideal. This will cause irritation and recession along
the gum lines.
• Remember to reach those surfaces that are easy to be missed especially
at the inside of the bottom teeth.
• It is advisable to floss your teeth before you brush them in the same
session.
• Brushing is done for two minutes at a time, twice a day, morning and
night time before bed. Please make sure after night time brushing do not
have anything to eat or drink except plain water.
• After brushing spit out the excess toothpaste do not rinse your mouth
out because you will be rinsing the fluoride away which is there to
protect your teeth from decay.
• If you like to use mouth wash use it 30 minutes to an hour after brushing
and it would be recommendable to use an alcohol free one.
• The bristles on the tooth brush should be small to medium in size
enabling easier access.
• Personally there is not much difference in using a manual or an electric
tooth brush. This is dependent on your personal preference.
I hope these tips were found to be very useful to you. See you next time.
