Volunteers needed
to deliver meals
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
As the chief executive officer of
LifeCare Alliance, Charles Gehring recognizes
the vital role of volunteers.
Since taking the reins nearly two
decades ago, he said he has seen a number
of similar social service organizations
throughout the state and country fold due
to the lack of volunteers needed to support
their programs.
“We just cannot survive without them,”
he said.
Some family members of Gerald Seymour wanted him to know they were thinking of him. He is at the Monterey Rehabilitation
Center in Grove City and cannot have visitors during the COVID-19 outbreak. Here, family members (from left to right) Cortney,
Justin, Charlie, Emmy, Terri and Tom Seymour stop outside his window to send a message of love. Below is Gerald’s reaction.
Message for a loved one
By Andrea Cordle
Westside Editor
Prairie Township resident Gerald
Seymour, 87, has been living at the
Monterey Rehabilitation Center in Grove
City since August 2019. Since the coronavirus
outbreak, his family has not been
able to visit him.
“It’s hard for us not to go see him,” said
Tom Seymour, Gerald’s son.
So, the family decided to make the best
of a challenging situation. They made
large cards and stood outside the care center’s
window with a message of love for
Gerald.
Tom said the family had been sending
Gerald care packages with some of his
favorite foods like peanut butter and milkshakes,
but they wanted to do more.
“We wanted to show him the family
was all still together,” said Tom. “He
(Gerald) was quite surprised and very
happy. It lifted our spirits as much as his.”
According to Tom, it was about two
years ago that his father was taken to the
hospital with flu-like symptoms. He was
treated and released. Just a few days
later, Gerald was back in the hospital,
where he was diagnosed with Guillain
Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder
in which the body’s immune system
attacks the nervous system.
“He was completely incapacitated,”
said Tom.
After his stay in the hospital, Gerald
and his wife, Emma, moved to StoryPoint
in Grove City. However, Tom said, Gerald
During his tenure, Gehring said he made the recruitment
of volunteers a priority in the five counties the organization
serves. He said to this day he remains grateful for
the overwhelming support they have shown.
“We have thousands of active volunteers participating
in our programs and services,” he said. “I cannot thank
them enough for all that they do.”
While the numbers of volunteers fluctuate before and
after the major holidays, Gehring said they have been fortunate
to have their active volunteers ready to provide
assistance as need be. Now, he said, those active volunteers
are needed more than ever and the organization is
requesting new volunteers to assemble.
“They are desperately needed to help provide services in
several of our programs,” said Gehring.
Like most businesses and organizations, LifeCare
Alliance has been impacted by the emergence of a novel
coronavirus. The organization, said Gehring, has taken
steps to weather the outbreak but changes have had to be
made.
“We have had to close all 40 of our dining centers
throughout the counties we serve,” he said, referring to
Champaign, Franklin, Logan, Madison and Marion counties.
The dining centers, he added, were a hub of activity
where the patrons, a majority of whom are older adults or
those with medical and physical challenges, congregated to
eat and chat and see friends.
“Due to the closure of our dining centers,” said Gehring,
“more than 700 people have had to shift from congregate
dining to home deliveries.”
In addition to the hundreds of new clients requiring
home deliveries, the organization is also adding 50 new
clients each day.
“We are fortunate to be able to still accept clients,” he
said.
To meet the growing demand, Gehring said the organization
needs volunteers for three of its programs. Those
programs include Groceries-on-the-Go where volunteers
pack meals at their pantry for cancer patients and those
living with AIDS, weekend pet food deliveries to their eligible
clients and Meals-on-Wheels.
According to Gehring, more than 5,000 meals are delivered
daily across five counties through its Meals-on-
Wheels program.
“It is considered to be one of the largest home meal distribution
programs in the country,” he said.
Due to the increase of community members
wanting to remain active or get out of the house
during stay-at-home orders, Gehring said the
organization has been incorporating daily training
sessions at its central location at 670 Harmon Ave.
in Columbus.
“Sometimes after their training session, they
can get right out and get started on a route,”
Gehring said.
He said that there are meal distribution sites at
locations throughout the counties they serve. For
instance, if a volunteer lives in Groveport, they do
not have to come to Columbus to collect meals as
there is a central location in the area.
“We do that in all of our areas because it makes
the most sense logistically,” he said. “We have
many volunteers who live in Madison County and
we know not all of them want to, or can, come to
London to pick up meals. So we have locations in
Plain City, West Jefferson, Mt. Sterling and South
Solon.
“We try to make it as easy and accessible as possible
for our volunteers.”
As a precaution, Gehring said temporary
changes have been made on route deliveries in
order to protect their clients and their volunteers.
“We are no longer requiring the client’s signature
when our volunteers leave their meals by the
door,” he said. “We ask that, at this time, the volunteer
step away or go back to their car and wait for
visual confirmation of the meal pickup. Or they
MESSAGE
Continued from page 1
could call and seek verification that way.”
There are, however, some exceptions.
“We do have some clients who cannot come to the door
so the volunteer will have to go in the house to deliver the
meals.”
The organization has asked that volunteers take their
temperatures before leaving for their route and to not
deliver meals should they feel under the weather.
“We want everyone to be safe,” Gehring said.
The organization has also requested that families delivering
meals leave their children in the cars or keep them
away from the clients’ home.
“There are many families out there who love to do this
as a group,” said Gehring. “We still encourage that but we
ask that social distancing be maintained at this time.”
He said that despite the new guidelines, he knows the
community will come out to support the LifeCare Alliance
programs.
One such couple who intends to do just that is Karen
and Phil Rohr. The Grove City couple have been volunteering
with Meals-on-Wheels for approximately 20 years and
said they have no intention to stop.
“We enjoy volunteering for this organization,” said
Karen Rohr. “It gives us so much pleasure to be of assistance.”
She said they love the interaction they have with the
clients (however brief as they have hot meals to deliver)
and the comfort they feel knowing that they have played a
small part in putting food in the stomachs of those who
need it.
“Some of these wonderful people would probably never
get a meal without this organization,” she said. “Knowing
that we did something to get them that hot meal makes us
feel like we have done something worthwhile.”
Rohr said she knows that it is recommended that older
adults limit contact with others, but said that she and her
husband have no plans to step away from delivering meals.
“We really didn’t have too much of a discussion about
it,” she said. “We felt that if we followed the organization’s
new guidelines, it would be fine to continue to deliver
meals.”
She said she would recommend becoming a Meals-on-
Wheels volunteer to anyone able to, global pandemic or
not.
“It is just a great way to give back to your community,”
she said.
To learn more about volunteering for any of the programs,
Gehring said to call their hotline at 614-444-6325
or visit www.lifecarealliance.org. Background checks are
required to become a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer.
The organization is also accepting clients for a number
of their programs. To check for eligibility, call their service
department at 614-278-3130 or visit their website for more
information.
needed more care, so he was eventually moved to the
Monterey Rehabilitation Center, where he has been
receiving “fantastic care.”
When Tom first started hearing reports about the
COVID-19 virus, he said he was concerned about his
father.
“His immune system is shot,” said Tom. “He’s very
susceptible to illness.”
Tom was happy to hear the care center decided to
institute a ‘no visitor’ policy during the COVID-19 outbreak,
though he knew it would be tough on his father
and his family.
For those who have a loved one in a care center or
facility where visitation has been eliminated or
decreased, Tom said it is important to remember the
little things, like a simple letter or a quick phone call.
“It’s amazing how the little things can boost how
they feel,” said Tom. “They know they haven’t been forgotten.”

They call it puppy love
Guest Column
Dave Burton
That reenergized
old man and that
cute little bundle of
fur next to him
walking down the
street was yours
truly and his new
sidekick golden
retriever puppy. I
swore it would
never happen again, but it happened. May
the force be with me.
I’ve been pounding the sidewalks of
Grove City looking for that elusive escape
tunnel for some 36 years now, 32 of them
with at least one dog by my side. The last
four years have sadly been solo flights as I
gimped about with my steadily worsening
bad hip. You may recall some of my
columns about my last dog, Rocky, and losing
his courageous battle with cancer in
2015. I decided then and there I’d never
have another dog.
Since then I’ve had frequent, well-meaning
encouragement from family, friends
and people I don’t even know.
“You need another dog. Seeing you without
a dog is like an order of French Fries
without ketchup.”
My standard reply became losing Rocky
took too much out of me and I’d gone
through it too many times. I added further
defense that my bad leg would eventually
prevent my walking one. Finally, I told
them not to worry, my dogs were still and
always will be walking next to me. I always
thanked them.
Well, I recently lost my bad leg excuse
with the great results of my hip replacement
surgery. That apparently set a wellconceived
plan of collusion into action on
this unsuspecting, stubborn life-long dog
lover.
I received an email from my cousin who
has made a living in the dog world. Of the
six golden retrievers I’ve had over the
years, she’s given me three. Correction: up
that count seven and four now. Her incredible
gifts of loyal four-legged companionship
have been a huge part of my adult life.
She said she was heading to Cincinnati to
pick up a rescue dog and asked if could she
stop by. Seemed a bit strange, a long trip
from New York, but I encouraged her to
stop by. So, she pulls up, I go out to the car
and get handed a 9-week-old male golden,
Denver. After her efforts and holding that
cute bundle of fluff and puff for just a few
seconds, how could I say no?
Denver’s been with us just a few weeks
now. Literally overnight, our sedate, i.e.
boring, retirement world has been transformed
into topsy-turvy bedlam as we set
‘Operation Train the Dog’ into action.
Denver implemented his Dog’s Rule plan.
The battle still rages on to determine
who’s the alpha in our house, Denver or
me. So far, he’s winning. He has an unfair
advantage with his lethal puppy teeth. It’s
amazing how much bleeding they cause
when one is on a small daily 81mg aspirin
dosage. Then there’s the piercing puppy
barking that makes the ears throb and
sends my blood pressure soaring. When
those fail, he follows through on never-ending
threats of decorating the floor and rug
again.
It’s been many years since I had a puppy
and I’m finding it’s more challenging to
combat this capable opponent now that I’m
over 70.
Denver becomes Devil Dog in an instant.
If you watch his eyes, you can see the twinkle
appear when he becomes possessed and
the exorcist is needed. Suddenly, he tears
into action. We call it a fit. He runs back
and forth across the room like the
Tasmanian devil, into the kitchen and back
many times, sliding and crashing, with a
squeaking toy in his mouth. Finally, he settles
down. You can relax. Nope, surprise,
he’s just recharging; there he goes again.
Better rush him outside before he decorates
the rug. His bladder control lasts for
about a minute. We’ve been quickly
reminded how much more difficult it is
house training a dog in the wintry and
early spring days with all the dark, cold
and mud.
Our memories are still sharp enough to
remember all the training tricks. We’re utilizing
the proven political world standard,
bribery. This leads to puppy bonding, akin
to buying votes. A goody thrown here, a
treat over there and he’s ours, he’ll do
almost anything as puppies are always
hungry. Problem has been he quickly
caught on and his demands for more handouts
keep increasing, just as with voters.
Luckily, we kept all Rocky’s toys, sure he
wouldn’t mind sharing them. They’ve provided
Denver with hours of entertainment
as he struts the house subjecting them to
various tortures only puppies can come up
with.
The routine conversation heard in our
house has changed. It’s all goo goo gaga
puppy talk now. It brings back memories of
my career and trying to communicate with
my boss. It’s been nonstop brainwashing
puppy talk that has Denver looking at us
as though we’re nuts. No, not yet, but we’re
getting there.
Denver is learning to enjoy his walks
more with every passing day. I no longer
need to pick him up and carry him as his
little legs have already doubled in size and
strength. He usually picks up a stick and
struts with it as retrievers do. Everything
is new to him. He stops often and stares.
Yesterday it was at the gathering of geese.
Suddenly they took off, started honking
and Denver rushed between my legs with
his tail down and a terrified look on his face
as if to say, “save me.” Same thing when he
heard a howling dog in the distance. Yet,
when another dog walks by, he wants to
become best buddies. He has yet to learn
most dogs have a hard time tolerating a
barking and lunging puppy jumping all
over them. Amazingly, he didn’t flinch
when he walked by the noisy garbage
trucks and clanging trash cans.
Denver’s doubled in size in just three
weeks. His huge paws say he’ll be doing a
whole lot of growing in the coming year. We
want him to grow and learn, but we also
want him to stay a puppy for as long as possible.
A puppy is such a great gift in this
difficult world.
The other day I sneaked down the
stairs, determined to have a quiet cup of
coffee. Not to be. I stepped on a toy sending
out a loud squeak. The coffee went flying. It
signified to Denver the day had begun.
Quickly out the door we went before another
‘mistake’.
Recently, Denver saw his first snowfall.
He rolled and played in it with one running
fit after another. It’s fun to watch him sit
attentively watching TV with a perplexed
look. I love it when he finally calmly lies at
my feet to get scratched and gives his
Denver
puppy teeth and my arms and hands a
break. I’m betting he’ll nod off with me
watching the Browns this fall as they lull
us to sleep, something they excel at.
Dreams help you tolerate life. My
dreams always had a loyal best friend by
my side. I’m confident Denver is fulfilling
that need again and will help me face the
next challenging segment of my life.
As the stay at home order continues in
Ohio, local municipalities are continuing to
make changes to protect residents. Among
these changes is having all Prairie
Township meetings via Facebook Live and
having the trustees attend the meetings
via conference call.
According to Prairie Township
Administrator Rob Peters, the meetings
are still open to the public, they just need
to be watched on Facebook Live instead of
attended in person.
“Residents can submit questions ahead
of the meeting, but cannot ask questions
via Facebook Live during the meetings,”
Peters said. “Questions need to be submitted
ahead of the meeting and will be
addressed by leadership during the meeting.”
Peters said having meetings in this format
would minimize the risk of infection in
the township. Officials have also closed
The passing of a fire levy is the last
thing Franklin Township officials want to
think about as they continue to make
changes in the wake of the coronavirus
pandemic.
The fire department put a 19.5-mil levy
on the March ballot. However, when the
March elections were postponed, leadership
said the passing of the levy is the last
thing on their minds right now.
“Right now, we are not thinking about
our levy,” said Mark Potts, administrator
for Franklin Township. “Our priority is the
health of our community. During this time,
we are not thinking about the fire levy; we
are focused on what we are going to do
today to protect our residents.”
However, Potts said part of protecting
the community depends on the township’s
first responders.
“Our first responders are trying to safely
provide the best service to our community
during these tough times,” Potts said.
“We need to keep them safe, especially our
vulnerable populations that are more susceptible
to this virus, like seniors.”
The election will now take place on April
28 and will be an exclusive mail-in primary
election, a first for Ohio. Voters who have
not already voted will need to request an
absentee ballot to vote. To receive an
absentee ballot, voters have to a print an
application form off the Internet, call their
county elections board to request one or
write the necessary information on a piece
of paper and mail it in.
Requests have to be received by noon on
Township Hall to essential staff only.
“We are still answering phones,
responding to emails and people can submit
zoning requests,” Peters said. “I will
still be here and our laptops and phones
are connected to Township Hall, so we can
respond to inquiries at home as well.”
Peters said the township has never
experienced anything like this before so
there is no operating procedure that covers
how to deal with a pandemic like COVID-
19.
“Right now, we are trying to see if there
are ways at least some of our staff can work
from home,” Peters said. “We also will be
using our Facebook page to keep residents
as informed as possible.”
Peters added that township departments,
such as the fire department, are
using personal protection equipment when
responding to people who might have
COVID-19 to protect themselves.
Other township departments that will
continue to operate include the roads,
cemeteries and parks department, fiscal
office and police services via the Franklin
April 25, except in cases of hospitalization.
Submitted ballots must be postmarked by
April 27 or can be directly delivered to the
voter’s county election board on April 28.
Voters with disabilities or those without
home mailing addresses will be the only
people allowed to vote in person on April
28.
The fire levy the township is asking for
is a permanent levy, meaning it will not
expire. Currently, the levy that is about to
expire is timed, so according to leadership
making one permanent levy would alleviate
the need constantly come back to taxpayers
asking to renew levies.
The new levy would also collect from the
entire township, including properties that
were annexed with a type II annexation.
“In 2003, the Ohio legislative government
passed laws to allow townships to
conform our boundaries to include properties
that were annexed with a type II
annexation,” said James Welch, fire chief.
“What this means for Franklin Township
residents is this will spread out the
expense for fire services to include all properties
that were annexed since 2003.”
Properties like the Hollywood Casino
Columbus that annexed out of the township
would have to pay its portion for the
levy.
If voters approve the levy, it would cost
the average resident approximately $30
more per year on their property taxes.
The money raised from this levy would
go toward the ongoing operations of the fire
department. Some of these expenses
include salaries, health insurance and the
cost of inflation.
Prairie makes plans for business during pandemic
County Sheriff’s Office.
The Prairie Township Community
Center closed its doors until further notice.
During this period of closure, the community
center plans to do their annual deep
cleaning and will not be doing the temporary
closing they previously had planned
for later this year.
The center had hoped to reopen on April
6 when schools were supposed to open, but
will continue to be closed as long as the
shelter in place order by Governor DeWine
is in place.
“We will be extending membership for
anytime lost during this shutdown,” said
Michael Pollack, director of the community
center. “We also will be suspending billing
in April until we reopen so members don’t
have to worry about how they will make
payments during these difficult times.”
Once the center can reopen, the community
center will restart payment, but will
not bill members for past months the center
was closed.
“We also are trying to reschedule or
postpone the majority of events we had
Governor Mike DeWine announced that
all schools in the state of Ohio will remain
closed through May 1, in response to the
A message to families from the CCS superintendent
OH License #20692
continuous spread of COVID-19.
Fortunately, the Columbus City Schools’
Academic Services team has been preparing
for the possibility of a long-term school
closure. Up until this point, we have been
operating under the Governor’s short-term
closure order, which set an end date of
April 3.
With this new directive, families will be
receiving information about our new distance
learning program for all grades and
all students. This program will begin on
Monday, April 6, and last through the end
of the Governor’s extended school closure of
Friday, May 1.
We will also observe the district’s scheduled
spring break, April 10-17, with no
required school activities on those days.
The information we will be providing to
families includes:
• How to access your student’s online
distance learning platforms through
Clever. These platforms will vary by grade
level and subject.
• How to connect with your student’s
teacher, principal, and school support staff.
This can include email, phone, and Webex
video chats.
• How to access your student’s new
email address. Our IT team will be activating
email addresses, to be used for communication
within the district only, for all students
on April 6.
• Where to find Wi-Fi access across the
city if you don’t have reliable access at
home. Many of our school buildings have
signal strengths that reach into the parking
lot, while a number of community partners
have stepped up to offer Wi-Fi services
or access.
Despite these new challenges that we
are now facing, our staff is confident we can
provide quality educational experiences,
resources, and supports for all of our students.
Our teachers and principals have
been training on the distance learning platforms
during the short-term closure and
will be ready to welcome students virtually
on April 6.
We understand there will be many questions,
growing pains, and unforeseen hiccups
as our school district transitions into
providing remote education. I ask for families
to be patient in this process and to
partner with us in educating our community’s
students.
I also understand that education is just
one factor that our families are dealing
with during this pandemic. Please know
that our team is here to help and to support
you. It is my hope that all of our families,
students, and staff stay safe and follow the
recommendations and orders given by
health experts. I encourage you to “Stay
Safe, CCS!”
A collective effort
Messenger photo by Dedra Cordle
Despite the circumstances and the protective gear, Jason Weese, the assistant
principal at Westland High School, and Melvina Torbert, the coordinator of state
and federal programs with the South-Western City Schools District, manage a
wave and a smile at a food distribution site on March 27. The prepackaged dinners
and weekend food bags were a part of a collective effort between the Mid-Ohio
Foodbank, the Grove City Church of the Nazarene, Jordan’s Crossing and a number
of business to offer meals to students during school closures due to the
COVID-19 outbreak. Torbert said the dinner meal distribution at Westland High
School will likely continue each week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but
advises parents to check the district’s website for verification and changes.

“Self Made” is well-acted but kind of a mess
With theaters closed for the time being,
a handful of distribution studios have
decided to release their upcoming attractions
on Video on Demand, which in the
past has been the place where movies go to
escape widespread public shame.
A question of pricing has been debated
with some studios allowing 48-hour rentals
for $6.99 while others are dropping theirs
for $20. While families may have paid the
latter amount for tickets and food before,
it’s a little much to ask an individual to
fork over that kind of dough, especially in
this economy. And, if I’m being real honest,
most movies are not worth the $5 admission
to the matinee but I digress.
While I will continue to peruse those
offerings, I will largely be searching other
streaming platforms for potentially entertaining
movies, limited television series
and television shows.
The show that seems to have everyone
abuzz is Netflix’s “Tiger King,” which I had
initially planned to review. Upon watching
the first episode of the seven-part
docuseries, however, I realized my tolerance
for stupidity is immensely low right
now so I had to pass on it.
As I was browsing the other new releases,
I saw Octavia Spencer’s face pop up on
the screen for “Self Made: Inspired by the
Life of Madam C.J. Walker” and decided to
check it out. With the exception of “Ma,” it
is always a delight to watch her performances
so I thought this might follow in that
same mold.
For the most part, this four-episode
series does that just, allowing her to showcase
that intensive range of emotion as she
brings a pioneer of the black beauty industry
to life on the screen. The overall series,
however, is a bit of a mess in its presentation
with its use of a modern soundtrack
and filming tricks set against its depiction
of early 1900s life. While I understand the
viewpoint of the writers and directors, it
made for an occasionally jarring viewing
experience.
It begins in 1908 St. Louis where a
beleaguered Sarah Breedlove is working as
a laundress to the affluent. With her husband
deceased and her daughter Lelia
(Tiffany Haddish) in school, she has no
time for the finer things in life, especially
concern for her appearance.
After a particularly hard day, she meets
Addie Munroe (Carmen Ejogo), a businesswoman
in the beauty industry who wants
to employ Sarah’s services. Upon taking
one look at the downtrodden Sarah, Addie
takes her under her wing and tries to get
her to rediscover a zest for life.
Through work and companionship, the
two bond over life’s ills and celebrate as
Sarah finds comfort in her appearance
through hair growth attributed to Addie’s
In Entertainment
products. Inspired by her friend, Sarah
pitches the idea of becoming a spokeswoman
to the masses but is quickly
rebuffed.
Believing that Addie does not want her
to become a business partner due to her
physical looks, the two bitterly part ways.
Afterward, Sarah becomes determined to
make a better hair product for all black
women and market it to all women, not just
those deemed physically acceptable by society’s
ridiculous standards.
The subsequent episodes follow Sarah
as she gains a cult following for her hair
products, marries advertising rep Charles
James Walker (Blair Underwood), moves to
Indiana and opens a factory and works to
become the next Rockefeller. While those
latter dreams to come to fruition to an
extent, it comes at great personal cost.
Upon reading up on C.J. Walker after
the show, the writers and directors were
wise to use the wording ‘Inspired by the
Life of’ as it seems to take several liberties
with her story. The most outlandish comes
at the expense of Annie Turnbo Malone,
the real-life woman on which Addie
Munroe in based. In the series, the running
conflict between the two self-made millionaires
has more to do with appearance while
most historians believe it had more to do
with claims of formula theft. That in of
itself could propel a series as it is ripe with
Pet Corner
Pets of the week
www.columbusmessenger.com
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
drama, but instead
this adaptation
turns Addie into a
one-note villain hellbent
on the destruction
of Walker’s burgeoning
manufacturing
company.
While the theatrics and ensuing conflict
between the two women were mildly amusing
to watch, it ultimately proved to be a
distraction into what was otherwise a
decent general public introduction of an
inspiring woman who used her fortune to
uplift the arts community, historical black
colleges and other civil rights causes and
organizations.
So if you’re looking to know more about
this great trailblazer, maybe stick to the
written word, such as the biography written
by her great-great-granddaughter
A’Lelia Bundles. But if you’re looking for a
well-acted but odd mixture of flash and
embellished strife, it’s a good way to pass
the time. Grade: C-
