C OVER Like you, we are concerned about
the health and safety of everyone during the
coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The DDG will
be closed to walk-ins through June to help
contain the spread of COVID-19. All events and
programming are being canceled. Until then
will publish on a Periodic schedule . Most links
are click-able.
Sadly Charles S. “Charlie Sharples” passed
away on March 16, 2020 from the coronavirus
at Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs,
California. See story on page 24.
NOTE All ads have been suspended and no
charges will be accrued. At some point we will
be trying to reach everyone to see when and
how each business will come back. The DDG
is expected to remain open with a monthly
edition.
Our small businesses, singers and entertainers
have been and will continue to be the lifeblood
of our community.
Note : Any business currently advertising are
also automatically eligible for free 30 days of ads
when you are reopened. If for any reason you
would like to change your ad or contact number
please let us know.
have added some surprises and technological
advancements will be tested. Like click here
During this time I personally hope to finish
my life story as a book. I can't wait to see
who plays me in the movie. I hope the scene
of me swimming nude with my best friend
at 13 as it is as raw as it gets. Two Jr high
boys skip school swim nude one black, one
white. They called us salt and pepper jocks
Apre swim warming up together grinding
in our tighty whites together. Or the time
we got caught behind the auto body shop
after a game of chess. I could go on but you
need to wait for the book.
IN THE NEWS.
What areas of the state are covered?
The order went into effect on Thursday,
March 19, 2020. The order is in place until
further notice. It covers the whole state
of California, and it exempts activity as
needed to maintain continuity of operation
of the federal critical infrastructure sectors,
critical government services, schools,
childcare, and construction, including
housing construction.
What can I do? What’s open?
Essential services will remain open, such
as:
MEXICO CITY (Thomson Reuters
Foundation) - More than 100 LGBT+ rights
groups on Wednesday called on U.S. public
health officials to address the heightened
vulnerability of gay and trans people to the
coronavirus, warning that their frequently
weakened immune systems can put them at
risk.
“We call on public health officials to ensure
the LGBTQ community is considered and
included in the public health response to
COVID-19 based on potential risk factors
... in our community,” said Dr. Scott Nass,
president of GLMA, an LGBT+ health
advocacy group, in a statement.
more information emerges about the public
health situation – and issue new orders and
directives as conditions warrant.
How does this order interact with local
orders to shelter in place? Does it
supersede them?
This is a statewide order.
Business and taxes
What businesses and organizations are
exempt?
Businesses and organizations that provide
critical infrastructure for the state are
exempted, including health care and public
health, public safety, food and agriculture
and media. See the full list of exempt
sectors (pdf).
I run/work at an exempted business or
organization, as defined by the Order. Do I
need to get an official letter of authorization
from the state to operate?
No. If your business or organization is
in the list of exempt sectors, it may still
operate. You do not need to obtain any
specific authorization from the state to do
so.
meals and childcare. Are those still open?
Yes. It is essential to keep children fed and
educated. School employees should report
to work and focus on distance learning,
school meals, and childcare/supervision.
Are daycares still open? Can my babysitter
still come to the house?
Yes. Daycares are still open, but only for
children of parents working in essential
sectors. Daycare centers that remain open
should employ heightened cleaning and
distancing requirements. Babysitters may
also come to the house to care for minors of
parents working in essential sectors.
Health care and helping sick relatives
What if I need to visit a health care
provider?
If you are feeling sick with flu-like
symptoms, please first call your doctor, a
nurse hotline, or an urgent care center.
If you need to go to the hospital, call ahead
so they can prepare for your arrival. If you
need to call 911, tell the 911 operator the
exact symptoms you are experiencing so
the ambulance provider can prepare to treat
you safely.
Do I need to pay my taxes?
Yes, state and federal deadlines have been
extended. All state taxes are now due on
July 15.
Schools and childcare
My school is providing free grab-and-go
What about routine, elective or non-urgent
medical appointments?
Non-essential medical care like eye exams,
teeth cleaning, and elective procedures
must/should be cancelled or rescheduled. If
possible, health care visits should be done
remotely.
Continued from page 8
Contact your health care provider to see
what services they are providing.
May I still go out to get my prescriptions?
Yes. You may leave their homes to obtain
prescriptions or get cannabis from a
licensed cannabis retailer.
Can I leave home to care for my elderly
parents or friends who require assistance to
care for themselves? Or a friend or family
member who has disabilities?
Yes. Be sure that you protect them and
yourself by following social distancing
guidelines such as washing hands before
and after, using hand sanitizer, maintaining
at least six feet of distance when possible,
and coughing or sneezing into your elbow
or a tissue and then washing your hands.
If you have early signs of a cold, please stay
away from your older loved ones.
Can I visit loved ones in the hospital,
nursing home, skilled nursing facility, or
other residential care facility?
Generally no. There are limited exceptions,
such as if you are going to the hospital with
a minor who is under 18 or someone who
is developmentally disabled and needs
assistance. For most other situations, the
order prohibits non-necessary visitation to
these kinds of facilities except at the end-oflife.
This is difficult, but necessary to protect
hospital staff and other patients.
Outdoor recreation
Can I still exercise? Take my kids to the
park for fresh air? Take a walk around the
block?
Yes. So long as you are maintaining a safe
social distance of six feet from people who
aren’t part of your household, it is ok to
go outside for exercise, a walk or fresh air.
Gyms are closed.
Can I walk my dog? Take my pet to the vet?
You can walk your dog. You can go to
the vet or pet hospital if your pet is sick.
Remember to distance yourself at least six
feet from other pets and owners.
Can people still go hiking or visit State
Parks? Please follow city guidelines
At the time of this writing:
Californians can walk, run, hike and bike
in their local neighborhoods as long as they
continue to practice social distancing of 6
feet. This means avoiding crowded trails
& parking lots. To help reduce crowds,
State Parks is modifying operations at
some parks, including closing vehicular
access and parking lots to reduce density
of visitors. For information on National
Parks, please visit their website and list of
closures can be found at www.parks.ca.gov/
THE ART OF FILLING GAY TIME DURING THE EPIDEMIC
The conflicting reports coming from
Sheltering in place can get to be
be current thinking. This film shows
how everyday people are daring to live
their lives and defy the norms of gender
and sexual identity in unconventional
ways. One of the artists featured is
the most influential manga artist,
Gengoroh Tagame, who has created
numerous explicitly erotic drawings
and paintings of gay life in Japan. This
Charlie Sharples and Will place a wreath
at state LGBT Veterans memorial
monument. Tom Swann in background.
“If you were young, hetero or middle-aged,
there was nothing to do,” said 20 years ago
by Charlie Sharples, a longtime resident
and first executive director of the Desert
Business Association, which promotes
gay-friendly businesses. While may talked
about the community changes he planned
them for the DBA and our ever changing
demographics.
Memorial From the desk of activist and
former Marine Sgt, Tom Swann.
March 8 as a passenger in Craig Osborne’s
car and was so sick that he did not go home
and was taken directly to the hospital.
The hospital complained to Rick Tice, his
roommate, that Charlie’s diapers were a
mess.
On Monday March 16 Charlie’s nephew in
Pennsylvania told the hospital to remove
life support and Charlie died.
Charlie was born in Louisville, Kentucky
approximately 1942. (He was 59 years old in
October 2000). He grew up in Manchester
Pennsylvania. As a high school senior in
1960 he shook hands with President John F.
Kennedy during the Presidential campaign
at the county fair. He attended Penn
State University and was very fond of late
football coach Joe Paterno. Charlie’s uncle
was a Roman Catholic Priest.
Charlie is one of the most beloved and
popular gay veterans in the history of the
Coachella Valley. He first began coming to
the desert almost fifty years ago (September
1974) after his service as a Captain in the
U.S. Marine Corps. Charlie served during
the Tet Offensive in 1968 in Vietnam.
Charlie was awarded both the Bronze and
Silver Stars Medals and was an Infantry
Platoon Officer. He also served as the
Commanding Officer of the Brig on the
USS Midway. He was also stationed in
Puerto Rico.
Charlie lived for many years in both 29
Palms and Indio. He was an apartment
building landlord and was manager
(innkeeper) of CCBC (a gay hotel) in
Charlie and best friend, Craig Osborne,
embarked on a Cruise where they shared a
stateroom to the Mexican Riviera on March
1st.
Three days into the cruise Charlie became
ill, so for the last 4 days on cruise he stayed
in his cabin and was incontinent requiring
the bed mattress to be changed twice.
He returned to Palm Springs on Sunday Cathedral City. For a short time, he was
manager of a gay business in San Diego.
For a short timer he lived in Idyllwild and
Hemet.
Charlie and Tom Swann Hernandez have
been close friends since 1998. Charlie
testified in support of Tom’s successful
medical malpractice suit in 2008. Charlie
was a roommate with Tom Hernandez and
the two of them were together when 9/11
took place. Charlie and Tom co-owned a
trailer at Lake Hemet and enjoyed going to
Big Bear Lake. Charlie and Tom went on a
cruise ship to Mexico together and loved
going together to Laughlin, Nevada.
He was co-founder of the Desert Stonewall
Democratic Club. He was President
of the Desert Business Association
(DBA). During his term with the DBA
the organization almost doubled its
membership. He was co-chair with Tom
Swann Hernandez of Gay Liberation
For 21st Century (GLF21) that was
instrumental in electing a gay majority to
the Palm Springs City Council in 2003.
He marched in 1999 with LGBTQ veterans
for the first time in the Palm Springs
Veterans Day Parade.
Charlie helped dedicate America’s first
The agenda from the dedication ceremony
on Saturday May 27, 2001.
He was a member of the Palm Springs Gay
Veterans. He was a charter member of
Guillermo on February 15, 2019. The first
transform the desert to become a lovely
place where LGBTQ flourish. Charlie will
