ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS 2011
ABSTINENCE: Catholics over 14 years of age are
bound to the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is
to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays
of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be
used at all.
FAST: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of
their sixtieth year are bound to the obligation of
fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the
days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is
allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to
maintain strength, may be taken according to each
one’s needs, but together they should not equal another
full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted,
but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are
allowed.

Dear Parishioners,
This week, the 7 th in Ordinary Time, is the last Sunday in
Ordinary Time before Lent. Ash Wednesday is this coming
Wednesday, February 22 nd . Our Masses are at 7:00 a.m.,
12:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. all at St. Theresa Church. We
will distribute ashes at all the Masses.
We are planning many activities for the parish this Lent.
As you heard about last weekend, we are going to be a
doing a program called “Catholicism” during Lent, continuing
into the Easter Season. Please consider signing up
for a group that would meet either Monday or Wednesday
evening, or Saturday morning. We will watch a beautiful
video and then discuss it. The videos are the work of Fr.
Robert Barron and are excellent. Catholicism will be a
great way to learn more about our faith!
Soup and Stations will be held again on Fridays in Lent…
join us as we pray the Stations of the Cross and then enjoy
a simple light supper and a talk in Duperry Hall.
“The Light is On for You”! During Lent I will be hearing
Confessions on Wednesdays beginning February 29 th at
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Church. These are
in addition to the regular times for the Sacrament of Reconciliation
on Saturdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Please be
sure to go to Confession often. Once a month is a great
idea! The Gospel reading of the “healing of the paralytic”
in this week’s Gospel reminds us of the value Jesus Himself
put on forgiveness of sin. Jesus heals the man of his
paralysis only secondarily to forgiving him his sins. Jesus
sees the need to be forgiven as more critical than physical
healing. It is not the man’s disability that keeps him
from fully living a life of grace in the Lord, but instead sin
is what must be dealt with for the man to be made
whole.
We are also planning a parish mission with Fr. Joe Thomas
on Sunday March 18, and several prayer opportunities…we’ll
be publishing a calendar and more information
in the bulletin…so stay tuned!

Conscience Rights, Religious Liberty Violated by
Sweeping HHS Contraceptive Mandate
On January 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization,
abortifacients, and contraception.
The exemption provided for "religious employers" is so narrow that it fails
to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations, including Catholic
hospitals, universities, and service organizations that help millions every
year. Ironically, not even Jesus & his disciples would have qualified, because
of their commitment to serve others.
President Obama’s February 10 offer of a limited and unclear compromise
does not change the urgent need for legislation to correct such threats to
religious liberty and conscience rights. The Respect for Rights of Conscience
Act has been introduced in Congress (H.R. 1179, S. 1467) to ensure
that those who participate in the health care system “retain the right
to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with
their religious beliefs and moral convictions.” It is more important than
ever that Members of Congress be urged to co-sponsor this measure – or
thanked if they are already co-sponsoring the bill. For the list of current
co-sponsors, please check H.R. 1179 and S. 1467 at: thomas.loc.gov.
ACTION: Contact your U.S. Representative by e-mail, phone, or FAX letter:
• Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at: 202-224-3121, or call your Members’
local offices.

Adult Faith Formation Program at St. Joseph the
Worker Shrine
Twice per year (Spring and Fall) St. Joseph the Worker Shrine
on Lee St. in Lowell is featuring Adult Faith Formation classes
conducted on 7 successive Wednesdays by Fr. Gene Tremblay
OMI, S.T.L.
The Spring session opens on (Ash)Wednesday, 22 February
and will continue on successive Wednesdays: Feb 29; March 7,
14, 21, 28; April 4. We will continue with the theme of Belief
and Unbelief in the Brave New World: This “semester,” exploring
The Crisis of Faith (unbelief) in the Modern Western
World.
Format: “Soup and Substance” – arrive anytime after 6:00 pm
and enjoy a light repast of hearty soup, chili, chowder and
breads. Class follows in the Presentation Hall and runs from
7:00-8:30 pm. A full set of class notes is provided and a certificate
of completion is awarded at the end of the 7-week program.

Suicide is Always a Tragedy
To stay informed on the Catholic response to the proposed Physician
Assisted Suicide ballot initiative, the “Massachusetts
Death with Dignity Act” be sure to check out the materials
available on the website www.SuicideisAlwaysaTragedy.org.
Please do all you can to pray and work for the success of this
education initiative. Remember, both the American Medical
Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society joins us in
opposing Physician Assisted Suicide
Once again this year we will be supporting the Communities
Together annual diaper and underwear drive. Needed most:
diapers and pull-ups of all sizes, and children’s underwear
in small sizes. The items will be shared with 10 social services
agencies that serve needy families locally. Monetary donations
are always welcome. Items can be placed in the bins in church.
