Putting this magazine together has been one of the most
exciting things I have ever done. I reminisced and felt pretty
good about myself and my accomplishments. But what
really humbled me was when I just had to pause and give
thanks to THE MAN for this life because I have been so
fortunate and have people whom I know love and support
me. Hats off to folks who challenged me and made me
grow up.
In this magazine I share my journey. You will read about
how I was born and later chose to be a professional DJ. If
entertainment is your thing, as a participant or someone
who takes the stage, you’ll find something inside. I offer
practical information about what you can do to stretch in
the world of entertainment and have fun doing it.
I interviewed Bree Argetsinger, The Betty Rocker, one
of my bestest friends who talks about health, fitness &
friendship. We have a special bond that we nourish.

I had heard him vomit in the stall and crossed my fingers
to wish that he had not missed the bowl. Upon leaving
the bathroom, he spat in a paper towel and missed
the trash bin landing it on the floor. He shrugged and
continued toward the door taking the mint I offered and
dropping a quarter on the tray. He didn’t pick it up. Why
didn’t he? Because he figured it was part of my job. And
it was. I was the bathroom attendant who would wipe
the toilet seats and attempt to spray away the odors. My
costume was a pair of black pants and a shirt too large
for this small brown frame. Then, I was the one who
shrugged when they told me it was the smallest they
had. In the bathroom only about three out of every ten
guys would even acknowledge me. I was a part of the
fixtures.
You’d be surprised to know that I was not miserable.
Each time the door cracked as someone came in or
left, I could better hear the music and see the DJ. My
reticular activating system, known as the (RAS) was
on high alert. The RAS is a part of the brain; it is the
brain’s sifter. It filters out what has been programmed to
be unimportant and looks out for what is. My RAS was
primed for opportunity. I could tell you every song the
DJ had played, how the crowd had reacted, and how
I would filter drops so that the crowd would go crazy,
I’d already played it in my mind a hundred times.
As the night progressed, the laughter of the girls got
louder, the bathroom seemed to get smellier, and the
DJ got worse. Why was I not miserable? Because
I knew that bathroom attendant was not my final
destination, and I was thankful, full of gratitude for
the opportunity to work and make some money, and
be around the music. I’d studied the brain and what
successful people do and I was doing those things.
Looking for where preparation meets opportunity is a
never ending goal of mine.
And it happened. The trainwreck. He had even done
the worst thing a DJ can do in my opinion, which
was disrespect his craft, and start killing the dance
floor. He was drunk. When he stumbled and fell, I
bolted for the turntable. To hell with the mints and
the bathroom, I was on the DJ’s stage! I had never
felt as if I fit in until I took that stage. Instinct basically
took over and the late night practicing while the club
was closed, took over. And you know what? I had
studied and I was ready. And even more, nobody
stopped me! In two minutes, I’d changed from being
the lowest person in the club to the most important.
I ramped up the music and rocked that room like I
knew I always could.
Some years later, it happened again. I was at a
wedding party and the DJ blew it. The DJ was
messy from partying too much himself and was
hammered. Let me tell you that this was not the
crowd you wanted to disappoint. It was a wedding
involving a Hollywood power couple. A member of
the couple searched the crowd, caught my eye and
invited me up. I looked at the eyeballs looking back
at me. There were so many faces. My hands were
sweaty. Taking a deep breath, I went to what fires
me up and would fire up the crowd. I went to the
playlist I had on my USB around my neck and sent
it.. and the rest is history.

Sammy Taggett was found in the trash in Manila, Philippines,
having been thrown away in a shoebox, when someone heard
his cry. They took him to an orphanage which guessed him to
be about nine hours old. Given the number of stray dogs and
rats, thoughts immediately go to his utter vulnerability in those
first moments of life and the innumerable things that could
have happened. But Sammy is a thriver, beating the odds from
his first breath forward.
Fueled by a desire to give back and create lasting social
change for good, Sammy along with Brandi Shigley, founded
“The Foundlings.” Their mission is to provide education and
creative learning platforms for youths in orphanages in the
Philippines. Their programs support long term outcomes of
meaningful lives, sustainable development, and economic
self-sufficiency. Sammy is well aware of the research
proving children exposed to arts and music have
enhanced development.

Where we are now almost forces us to find a new way or a better way to do things.
And wherever we find ourselves, I am hoping that we can see and take advantage of
the opportunity to grow. To pivot. Merriam Webster Dictionary gives one definition of
pivot as: stepping with one foot while keeping the other foot at its point of contact with
the floor. This particular definition relates to basketball, but I think it’s a great metaphor
for what we need to do. Because like the players, we need to keep one foot grounded
and the other shifting in the new direction-- the direction of growth. And what do we find
in growth? Learning and wisdom.
The first thing is to have the mindset that you are a music ambassador. And that
through your music you bring joy and even healing. You must not only stay current with
the latest drops but are current in the ways in which you can grow your audience. In
those ways, you can bring more joy and healing.

So, here are some tips to help you on your path to growing as an
entertainer, with the ability to reach a huge audience and bring turntable
joy into this world:

Identify your best skill. If you do not know what it is, ask others what is something
you have done that impressed them. That is your strength. FOCUS FOCUS
FOCUS on that. Some skills that are particularly effective. Are you a good Emcee,
someone who can engage an audience? Can you tell amazing stories or are you
an incredible musician or singer? Are you a gifted comedian? What do you do so
well as an entertainer that often leaves people in AWE? Focus on that these next
few weeks and test them out on your audience! Everyone is watching now!
More than ever!

Lean into your relationship capital! I cannot stress this enough. The time when
you were afraid to ask for a testimonial after an amazing gig or show you did, is
OVER. It is now time to reach out to your current customer base and ask them
simply “How are you doing? If I were to host a virtual party for you, would that be
something that your company, audience, family, etc would be interested in? We’re
helping spread the love around the world through entertainment and since we can’t
go to shows, I would love to bring the show to your living room!”

Get creative with your studio space; it is now a virtual backdrop for your
performance. Here are some of my favorite simple things you can add
Lighting Ideas, creative backdrops, using Green Screens with your zoom
calls, and are all basic places to start for sure!

Stay in the mindset of SERVICE. WE CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. The
people that are going to come out of this ahead are the ones who are serving the
most during this time of isolation. We want you to be that person. If you are wanting

Work on a new skill. To put it simply, goals are temporary and skills are for a
lifetime. Now is the time to focus on finding another SKILL that can lead to your
advancement. Whether that is using Instagram better, for that I suggest Chalene
Johnson, or how to market better with someone like Mike Dillard, you need to lean
into this more than ever. HONE A SKILL!

We have found out that we need to stay
connected more than ever and we’ve
figured out how to do that.
As far back as the research can take us, evidence
shows that man created music meaning that music
is an important part of who we are. It is deep within
us with a drive for outward expression. When we
hear it, we move - we dance and sing -and feel joy.
I think that it became part of who we are because
we are social in nature and because music is a
means to connect us to each other. When we think
about music, our favorite song comes to mind and
the memories associated with it. How about this?
How about intentionally creating beautiful memories
with a dance party? You can participate or create one
yourself.
Music heals. Scholarly articles about the effects of
music on healing are published almost daily. The
interest is increasing because we have better ways
to measure the body’s response to music stimuli. And
baby, does it respond! But they didn’t have to tell us
that because we know. We feel it!
You can use music to get in flow. Certain music really
does take you THERE. Ask any athlete. Many have
a playlist they use to get psyched up, to get in flow.
Ever since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi published his book
“Flow” numerous scholars have published articles
about music and getting in flow. You are in flow when
you are in the zone, completely taken over, totally
absorbed by what you are doing. There are times
when I am at the decks really feeling the energy and
we are all moving as one and I take off. An hour can
pass and it seems like five minutes. When do you
do that?
You can take advantage of the connections music
makes. Start by honoring the connections you have.
Today more than ever, it is important to let people
know that you love and care about them. And Do It
Now. You can use it to amplify your passion by using
music to connect with people who share your interests,
a to z, ranging from inspiring photos to sharing the
funniest memes. Reach out to others online and create
something. Amplify your passion.

Sammy and Bree spending precious
time together
Though she goes hard and fast with her love
of motorcycles, skydiving, and other sports that
take most folks breath away, she is the most
nurturing woman you will ever meet. The Betty
Rocker has changed the lives of thousands
of people, starting with helping them to get
comfortable in their own skins. She wants us to
pause and recognize that we are enough right
now. She says that we are all FLAWESOME,
“awesome with our flaws.” As we are. And I
totally agree. It is something I want my people to
know as well.

In this interview, I am celebrating and
sharing with you nearly ten years of
friendship with Bree Argetsinger,
aka The Betty Rocker. She’s a real
undisputed Super Badass Ninja, who
plays full out. She shows up in the health
and fitness space as a key player. And
her name, The Betty Rocker, does say it
all. So much is in a name, isn’t it? We’ve
talked about how I refer to myself as
Shoebox Moses, the Evolved Performer,
and that by our choosing a name that
empowered us, we embodied more
strength.
Our friendship glue comes in large
part from the belief that we believe that
relationships need nurturing to continue
and grow. We have done that with ours.
My fear of abandonment abated. Look
at the photo of the two of us walking
with arms entwined. That day we just
happened to run into one another and
both needed to talk. The universe did its
work and we were there for each other.
Bree knows her stuff. She is a C.H.E.K.
(Corrective Exercise and High Performance
Kinesiology) certified exercise coach, a
Nationally Certified Structural Integration
Practitioner and a certified ISSA practitioner
International Sports Sciences Association. I
have followed her plans and benefited easily
seeing how I got more stamina and that is big
with the crazy demanding schedule I have. Her
exercise and meal plans are varied because
we as people are. She has plans for the various
lifestyles we lead, some taking only 15 minutes
because she gets us. And you can always find a

THE ESSENTIALS:
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
Get to know your audience and get their musical choices early. This can be as
simple as getting a Spotify playlist from them ahead of time. Your music should
match the party-goers. Once you get that music pick the music that has
HIGH ENERGY!
2. PARTICIPATION
These parties are 100% about audience participation. GET them involved, from
costumes to wigs to fun lighting. There has to be some involvement on their
part! WE love watching people have dance-offs and family choreography. When
using Zoom, you can see their names. Make sure that you can call them out by
their names!
3. EDUCATE
how your audience how to enjoy your online party. There is nothing more
anti-climatic than listening to a huge dance song that doesn’t sound fun cause
it’s on a small computer speaker! Educate your audience on how to listen
through their home stereo or their Bluetooth speakers. Anything is BETTER

Something interesting happened the next morning after attending a conference where
