UPOV Mission Statement<br />

To provide and promote an effective system <strong>of</strong> <strong>plant</strong> <strong>variety</strong> <strong>protection</strong>, with <strong>the</strong> aim<br />

<strong>of</strong> encouraging <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> new varieties <strong>of</strong> <strong>plant</strong>s, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> society.<br />

Plant Variety <strong>Protection</strong> is a UPOV publication that reports on national and international events in<br />

its field <strong>of</strong> competence and in related areas. It is published in English only – although some items<br />

are quadrilingual (English, French, German and Spanish) – at irregular intervals, usually at a rate <strong>of</strong><br />

two issues per year. Requests <strong>for</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong> mailing list may be placed with:<br />

Crataegus spp. Mexico is <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> this species. Its name in Mexico (Tejocote)<br />

comes from <strong>the</strong> Nahuatl Texocotl, which literally means fruit-stone. The most common use<br />

is traditionally during Christmas time, eating fresh or in a punch. With its fruit, which has<br />

calcium, iron, vitamins C and B complex, candies, beverages, preserves, jam and marmalade<br />

are made. Its wood is used to make handcrafts and handles, and used <strong>for</strong> firewood. It is also<br />

used as an ornamental, as rootstock, or to elaborate cosmetics and pectin, and to provide<br />

shade. Its leaves, by infusion, are used <strong>for</strong> medical proposes: such as diuretic, <strong>for</strong> hypertension<br />

and insomnia. The boiled fruit is used as a remedy <strong>for</strong> colds, coughs, pneumonia and<br />

bronchitis.<br />
