LETTER
FROM
the
PRESIDENT
Donate Life Indiana continues to grow each year as we share the importance of
donation and transplantation. Every day, we go out into our community with the
goal of educating Hoosiers about why it is so important to be a registered donor
and how they can save lives.
In 2019, our staff focused on statewide youth education, reaching hundreds of
schools and thousands of students before those students obtain their driver's
license. We asked each student to talk about donation at home and share their
decision with their family and friends. These efforts have led to new educational
partnerships and a significant increase in donation presentations statewide.
Our education did not stop at the classroom. We continued our efforts by
providing education materials, an online presence and in-person presentations
through hospitals, the BMV, driver education programs and community clubs.
On behalf of Donate Life Indiana, we are excited to announce our efforts
helped Indiana reach 4 million registered donors. We are proud to share our
accomplishments in this report. We will continue to educate our state about
donation and transplantation and register more Hoosiers as donor heroes
in 2020 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Steve Johnson, FACHE
President, Donate Life Indiana

After her brother, Michael, died unexpectedly in 2017, Krisanne
Clinkenbeard understood the importance of sharing information
about donation and transplantation with her middle school health
students. Now, she invites the Donate Life Indiana youth education
team to visit her classes every semester. Clinkenbeard said, “My
hope is that my students go home and have a conversation with
their family. Knowing each other’s decision about organ, tissue
and eye donation is important.”
Losing my brother was devastating,
but knowing he had registered to help
others has given us comfort. We are so
proud of him for being a donor hero.
— Krisanne Clinkenbeard, donor sister
Clinkenbeard also serves with other Indiana educators as a member
of Donate Life Indiana’s Youth Education Council. The Council provides
professional guidance for Donate Life Indiana’s youth education team
in developing new youth programs and educational resources. “Being
a donor family member and knowing transplant recipients inspires me
to help in any way possible. When I ask my students at the end of the
semester, ‘What guest speaker had the most impact on you,’ their
answer is always, ‘Donate Life Indiana.’ ”

Partnership Highlights
Donate Life Indiana’s partnership with the Indiana BMV continues to be successful in registering more Hoosiers as donors.
The BMV allowed Donate Life Indiana to speak to their staff at various luncheons and meetings throughout the state. These
opportunities were used to share donation education and impactful updates on the BMV's work to register more Hoosiers as
organ, tissue and eye donors.
Approximately 99% of registrations are a result of the BMV staff asking the donation question every day, which is a vital
part of our success in Indiana. This year, we reached a milestone of 4 million registered Hoosiers.

YOUTH Education
In 2019, Donate Life Indiana completed the first full
year of a youth education initiative to raise awareness
of donation and transplantation. The initiative’s goal is
to educate teens at a time when they will be obtaining
a state ID, learner’s permit or driver’s license, so they
can make an informed donation decision with their
family before being asked about registering as a donor
at the BMV.
The team partnered with Indiana Health Occupational
Student Association, Indiana Association of School
Principals and Indiana Society for Health and Physical
Educators and traveled to many Indiana educator
conferences to promote the youth education initiative
with teachers across all 92 counties.

Indiana State Health Occupational
Student Association Conference
As part of our youth education initiative, Donate Life Indiana was
once again honored to serve as the title sponsor of the Indiana
State Health Occupational Student Association Conference. HOSA
chapters around the country allow students to learn more about
occupations in the healthcare industry. Many students attend the
annual HOSA conference, where they apply their knowledge by
participating in various competitive events.
As title sponsor, we educated hundreds of students during opening
night about the importance of organ, tissue and eye donation. We
also managed the competitive problem-solving event, which allowed
us to challenge students to deliver a short presentation on how to
inspire more teenagers to register their donation decisions.
New Castle Career Center students, including team member Maggie
Smith, won the challenge competition. Smith, shown here with her
teammates (third from left) reflected on the competition. "I would
like to say my group and I are so thankful we had the chance to get
involved with HOSA and go to HOSA State. Most importantly, we
are so thankful for the experience we had at HOSA and the impact
it made on all of us," said Smith. “It allowed us to work together as
a team, show our knowledge to different people and move forward
to Nationals. Mostly, it influenced me to join HOSA in college at Ball
State! The competition’s energy was so exciting. It truly was a once
in a lifetime experience. HOSA was the highlight of my senior year.
The competition only reassured me that I want to work in the health
field! Thank you, Donate Life Indiana.”

2020 DONATE LIFE
Rose Parade Float
For the past 11 years, Donate Life Indiana has
partnered with Donate Life America for the
annual Rose Parade float. The Donate Life Rose
Parade float — themed "Light in the Darkness"
— highlighted the power of unity, light and
love. The theme was inspired by Southeast
Asia’s Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, which
is a celebration of light shining in the darkness.
Twenty-six organ, tissue and eye recipients
and living donors rode on or walked alongside
the float. Each year, the float honors donor
heroes from across the nation through
floragraph portraits.
A floragraph is a portrait of a deceased organ,
tissue or eye donor created with organic
materials such as spices, seeds and crushed
flowers. Hoosier donors and their families
honored with floragraphs have been the
subject of hundreds of news stories, capturing
the families' meaningful participation in the
Rose Parade.

2020 INDIANA FLORAGRAPH HONOREE
Tristan Hackman
This year's Indiana floragraph honoree was Tristan
Hackman. In 2015, when Tristan died at the age of 28,
her mother, Tammy Hackman, was reminded of her
daughter's giving spirit and knew donating her organs
was something she would have wanted. Tristan's heart,
kidneys, liver and lungs helped people in need of
lifesaving organ transplants.
Tammy and her husband, Bret, are now raising Tristan's
son, Bryce. According to Tammy, Bryce is a straight-A
student like his mom and is doing well. He enjoys playing
baseball and swimming — a sport in which his mom
excelled as a member of the swim teams at Indianapolis'
North Central High School and Riviera Club.
Tristan was a giving person
all of her life, and she loved
to help people. She'd be
pleased to know she helped
others have the opportunity
to explore life even more.
—Tammy Hackman, Tristan’s mother

Donate Life
TRANSPLANT GAMES OF AMERICA
The Donate Life Transplant Games of America is a festival-style event produced by the Transplant Life
Foundation for individuals who have undergone lifesaving transplant surgeries. Competitive events are
open to living donors, organ transplant recipients and bone marrow recipients, as well as corneal and
tissue transplant recipients and donor families. This is more than an athletics event. The Donate Life
Transplant Games of America highlights the critical importance of organ, tissue and eye donation, while
celebrating the lives of organ donors and recipients.
This year, Donate Life Indiana was honored with the opportunity to manage Team Indiana participants
and plans to participate in the games in Meadowlands, N.J.

National
DONATE LIFE MONTH
Donate Life Indiana painted the Hoosier state blue and green for National Donate Life Month in April. From coloring the
Indianapolis canal blue with Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and BMV leadership on National Blue and Green Day, to raising
Donate Life flags at hospitals and businesses across the state, we celebrated the gift of life and our donor heroes during the
entire month of April.
Our Indiana transplant centers and transplantation staff helped in the celebration by wearing blue and green. Many Hoosiers
even shared their Donate Life spirit with photos on social media. In total, Indiana had over 55 events across the state during
April to raise awareness around organ, tissue and eye donation.
12
Community EDUCATION
Donate Life Indiana strives to engage the community with the goal of educating Indiana residents about the importance of
organ, tissue and eye donation, while increasing the number of registered donors in our state. Building relationships through
partnerships is an integral part of raising awareness.
In 2019, Donate Life Indiana was proud to provide hands-on learning opportunities for Indiana youth through partnerships
with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Science Central and the Fort Wayne Parks Department. We were also excited to launch
chapters of the Student Organ Donation Advocates at three colleges — Indiana University, Purdue University and Indiana
Wesleyan University. Our partnerships with faith leaders and key figures within the community further amplified our
lifesaving message.

In 2012, Curtis Warfield was diagnosed with stage 3
kidney disease and began dialysis. His daughter began
the process to become his living kidney donor, but
testing revealed she was not compatible. Her friend
and sorority sister, however, was a perfect match. His
successful kidney transplant took place in January 2016.
Today, Warfield is back to work, not only continuing
his career as a quality analyst with the state of Indiana,
but as a dedicated Donate Life Indiana advocate. When
he is not helping Donate Life Indiana provide education
to the youth of Indiana, he can be found traveling to
Washington D.C., where he works tirelessly to improve
the living kidney donation programs nationwide.
