FC CYPRESS SOCCER CLUB - REGISTRATION OPEN 

Summer programs (ages 4-14) and tryouts for competitive players 

(ages 8-14) for boys and girls. We are excited to be offering our Soccer 

School program for boys and girls ages 4+. This unique development 

program is solely focused on developing the child/player through 

quality soccer instruction and character development. This program will 

be overseen and directed by professional coaches. Soccer School PLUS 

program for boys and girls ages 7+. This unique development program 

is solely focused on developing the child/player through quality soccer 

instruction and character development. This program will be overseen 

and directed by professional coaches. The soccer school’s aim is to 

provide a strong foundation for every child to have the opportunity to 

enter into our Pre-Academy or Competitive programs, when they are 

ready. The Competitive program is for players birth years of 2011-2006. 

This program is a step up and requires commitment to practice and 

games. It requires dedication to working on your game, on the field and 

off the field (at practice and away from practice). 

Tryouts or observation by a FC Cypress staff member is required to be

MAY IS NATIONAL STROKE AWARENESS MONTH 

Many health and heart organizations come together every May to raise awareness about the causes and effects of stroke. One of their biggest 

campaigns is FAST, teaching the world to know the symptoms of stroke and how to respond quickly to help save a life. 

Face - By asking the person to smile you can tell immediately if one side of the face droops. 

Arm - Ask the person to raise both arms. Observe to see if one arm drifts lower than the other. 

Speech - Slurred speech is a symptom of stroke. Ask the person to repeat a single sentence. 

Time - Call 911-Fast. Time may be the difference between life and death or even partial and full recovery. 

National Stroke Awareness Day was proclaimed in 1989 by President George H. W. Bush. It had been observed for many years before the proclamation. 

The Centers for Disease Control, the American Heart Association, World Stroke Campaign and many other have all participated in bringing education,

Garlic Shrimp Scampi 

You could make this on National Shrimp Day May 10th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta 

1/2 cup butter 

2 cloves garlic, sliced 

1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined 

1/3 cup white wine 

3/4 cup dry bread crumbs 

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan 

cheese 

Buttermilk Biscuits 

You could make this on National Buttermilk Biscuits Day May 14th! 

DIRECTIONS:Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add angel hair pasta 

and return pot to boil. Cook until al dente. Drain well. In a large saucepan, melt 

butter, saute garlic until tender, remove garlic and discard. Add shrimp and cook 

until colored pink. Stir in white wine. The bread crumbs are used as thickening, 

so stir in a little at a time until desired thickness is reached. Serve shrimp over 

angel hair pasta, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. http://allrecipes.com/

4 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1 teaspoon cream of tartar 

4 teaspoons baking powder 

1 cup lard 

2 cups buttermilk 

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Whisk together 

flour, salt, baking soda, cream of tartar and baking powder. Cut lard into flour 

mixture using a pastry blender until crumbly; stir in buttermilk. Turn mixture 

onto a floured surface and knead just a few times to form a moist dough. Roll 

dough out 1-inch thick; cut biscuits with a cookie cutter or round glass. Place 

biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until tops

Gardening Tips For May 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are 

growing fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape 

beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and 

annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, 

lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, 

duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or 

nursery plants, okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter 

squash, pumpkins, basil, peppers, lima beans, eggplant, 

garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want to 

dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and 

there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular 

new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.

10 TIPS FOR SAFE 

COMPUTING 

Today, we are more 

dependent on computers 

and the information that they 

store than ever before. From 

spyware, viruses and Trojans 

to identity theft and computer 

hardware malfunctions - 

any disruption can have a 

huge impact on our lives. No 

matter how savvy the user, 

safe computing practices are 

a combination of physical 

protections using computer 

software and security settings 

and the secure actions of the 

user. You need both to make 

a difference. Below are 10 tips that will help you protect your computer 

and ultimately the information stored on it. 

1. Keep your computer updated - In the evolving world of software viruses, 

it is essential that computer owners use anti-virus software and keep it upto-date. 

Most anti-virus software gives the user the ability to do automatic 

updates. Whether individuals choose to update their operating system 

software automatically or manually, we recommend making it a continuous 

process. It is also important to keep other software on your computer 

updated. Software updates often include essential bug fixes and security 

features that address existing vulnerabilities. Finally, enable the personal 

firewall on your computer. This will help to keep unauthorized people from 

snooping around your computer when it’s connected to the Internet. 

2. Create strong, secure passwords - There is power in strong 

passwords. We recommend passwords that contain at least 8 characters 

with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Strong passwords 

are less likely to be hacked than very generic passwords. Use creative 

pass-phases to avoid having to write down a password. Do not share 

your passwords with anyone. 

3. Download files legally - Along with the possibility of significant legal 

penalties, downloading music and movies from peer-to-peer networks

can be harmful to your machine. These downloaded files are sometimes 

riddled with viruses and spyware. 

4. Keep personal information safe - Reduce your risk of identity theft. 

Never share your personal information via email, no matter how official 

the email looks. Official business that requires personal information 

should not happen via unsecured email. 

5. Scan email attachments and validate links - In an effort to keep 

viruses off your machine, scan all attachments that are sent to you. Viruses 

can lurk in emails from friends and family. While you may be fooled about 

an email that contains a photo you would like to see from a friend, antivirus 

software will know the difference. If you receive a link in an email 

from a trusted source, hover over the link using your mouse and look in 

the bottom bar of your web browser to reveal the true URL and validate 

that the link is legitimate. This will ensure that you know where you are 

going on the Internet and whether or not you want to go there. 

6. Lock your computer - When leaving your computer unattended, 

physically lock it to prevent theft of the machine. We also suggest that 

users lock the screen with a password to safeguard data. 

7. Log off any public areas - Remember when using a public computer 

or network, it is just that…public. Be sure that you completely log off the 

site or machine when you are finished using it. Users should be especially 

mindful to uncheck boxes that will remember users’ login information 

when logging into online services, such as email and bank accounts. 

8. Back up important data - We have seen final papers vanish - hard drives 

crash and files become corrupt. If you have important information that you 

cannot afford to lose, back it up. We recommend that you store this information 

securely and even consider storing extra copies at another location. 

9. Limit information on social media sites - People will post almost anything 

on social media site. For many people, birth dates, anniversaries, addresses, 

phone numbers and a lot of other personal information can be found on social 

media sites. Protect yourself from identity theft and other scams by limiting 

what information you disclose online and who can see that information. 

10. Avoid surfing websites that you don’t already know - Browsers are 

quickly becoming one of the larger vulnerabilities in computing. Adware 

and spyware are written specifically to exploit Internet Explorer and 

Firefox. So try and stick with the websites you trust.

MOSQUITO CONTROL 

1. Empty, remove, cover or turn upside down any receptacle that would 

hold water - particularly old bottles and tin cans. 

2. Change water and scrub vases holding flowers or cuttings twice each 

week - or grow cutting in sand. 

3. Discard old tires or store them indoors. 

4. Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks or cisterns. Seal 

cisterns not in actual use. 

5. Repair leaky plumbing and outside faucets. They may cause standing 

water. 

6. Connect open waste-water drains to a sewage system or construct 

separate sump or leach. 

7. Clean clogged roof gutters and drain flat roofs.

CAM Food Pantry Update 

CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES’ (CAM) 

FOOD PANTRY HOURS REVISED TO 

ACCOMMODATE 450% INCREASE IN SERVICE 

With unemployment continuing to rise, feeding one’s family has become 

an unreachable goal for many parents. Cypress Assistance Ministries’ Food 

Pantry is experiencing a 450% increase in the number of people depending 

on assistance for food. “Many families who were financially stable have 

now seen the reduction of or loss of one or more household paychecks, 

leaving them unable to cover basic necessities. Unemployment payment 

will kick in and that will help, but having enough right now means asking 

others for help. And recovering from this kind of loss will require financial 

assistance as well.” stated Janet Ryan, CAM’s Director of Development. 

“The large majority of people coming to CAM’s Food Pantry are new 

faces. They are people who were self-sufficient until this unexpected and 

unprecedented time. Truly anyone can fall on hard times.” 

With this large influx of traffic, CAM is modifying the Food Pantry hours 

to allow one day a week for sorting food and packing boxes of food. 

The new hours for assistance will be Monday-Thursday, 10 AM-2 PM. 

“The demand is simply more than we can keep up with unless we again 

modify the hours.” said Ryan. “And volunteers are very much needed so 

if you are not in a high-risk group, please consider giving of your time.” 

CAM’s Food Pantry is using a “Drive Through” model to limit contact 

between individuals. Clients stay in their cars, show ID and proof of 

residency and then based on household size a number of boxes of prepacked 

food items are placed in their trunk or backseat. CAM is serving 

food to zip codes 77065, 77095, 77429, 77433 and 77084. 

The best ways to help CAM include financial donations, food donations

Golf Tournaments 

33ND ANNUAL B. F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC 

POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER 

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation 

(CFEF) trustees graded 1200+ scholarship applications and met via Zoom 

to award more than $635,000 in scholarships. For Cypress-Fairbanks ISD 

graduating seniors planning to attend Lone Star College full-time in the 

fall, our application is open now through May 11, 2020. This summer, the 

Foundation will award $72,000 from the Edwin C. Schroeder Endowment 

Fund. The Foundation looks forward to recognizing our 2020 scholarship 

recipients this August. With the Stay Home - Work Safe Mandate through 

the end of April, the Foundation has decided to postpone the B. F. Adam 

Golf Classic until the COVID-19 risk is minimal within our community for 

the safety of our 288 golfers and over 100 volunteers, trustees and staff, 

who help make this event a tremendous success, as well as the staff at 

BlackHorse Golf Club. Our 33 rd annual B. F. Adam Golf Class has been 

moved to Monday, November 16, 2020. 

Celebrating 50 years as a non-profit raising money to fund scholarships 

for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school graduates, the Cy-Fair Educational 

Foundation is looking forward to our exciting Fall lineup of events.

ST. AIDAN’S EPISCOPAL VBS 

Take a ride with us for an exciting week of VBS, July 13 th -17 th ! Early 

registration costs $20. Late registration is June 1 st , costs $30. Our theme 

this year is Rocky Railway; Jesus’ Power Pulls us Through. In addition, we’ll 

be having Armored Sports come in again this year for after VBS fun! 

From 12-4 PM, Armored Sports will run a Bible based sports camp. The 

participants will play fun games like dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag, 

and games revolving around basketball, soccer and more! The cost in 

addition to VBS is $115 if registered before June 1 st and $125 if registered 

after June 1 st . Note: Registration for Armored Sports must be done 

separately from VBS. 

Summer Camps 

CAMP CORNERSTONE WEEK LONG CAMP 

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone 

United Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the 

completion of 4th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2020. Camp 

hours are 9:30 AM-1 PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer 

and you are invited to participate in any or all! Registration open. Session 

I - “Safari” is June 15-19, 2020; Session II - “Christmas in July” is July 13-17, 

2020; Session III - “Summer Olympics” is August 3-7, 2020. The cost per 

camp per child is $125 and is due at the time of registration. To download 

a form from the Cornerstone website, go to www.cornerstoneumc.org 

and click on “Ministries” and then select “Preschool.” You will see a tab for 


Camp Cornerstone. Print the form and have it filled out before you arrive, 

saving yourself time! Before each camp session begins, you will hear 

from your child’s teacher so you can learn more about the camp and they 

will answer questions about the week-long fun. Each day your child will 

bring a backpack and a lunch as they enjoy each other and the special 

things they will do during the week. We look forward to having your 

child at camp this summer! It’s a great time for everyone and you don’t 

want to miss any of it! Registration will continue through May 1, 2020 or 

until camp classes are full. Once camp classes are full, a waiting list will

arts, STEM and worship. Camp Hope is a day camp that is passionate 

about growing leaders. This is one of the reasons that Camp Hope is one 

of the BEST ways to develop youth leaders. It’s a vital part of what Camp

The iWRITE Organization will host Creative Writing & Illustration Summer 

Camps around the Houston area, allowing young writers to bring their 

stories to life! iWRITE was founded ten years ago by children’s author, 

Melissa Williams Murphy, in order to give students the opportunity to 

build their writing skills and boost their creative confidence through all 

kinds of writing programs and publishing opportunities. This summer 

young writers can learn straight from the pros! 

The iWRITE summer camps and workshops will be held in June and July 

in the Cypress, Spring Branch and Ft. Bend areas with opportunities for 

kids ages 8 to 16 years old. Students will learn character development 

skills that can be used in all types of writing, how authors brainstorm and 

turn ideas into a story, how illustrators bring characters to life through 

art, fun editing techniques and even how to get your work published.
