Longtime pals move powwows to parking lot
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Robin Bruno is not in the habit of getting
out of her car to speak to a group of
strangers in a parking lot.
“I can’t recall an occasion that ever called
for it,” she said with a laugh.
And yet, she found herself doing just that
earlier this month in front of a trio of unfamiliar
men.
“I had been watching them for a while
and felt compelled to talk to them at this
point,” she said. “I had to tell them how they
made me feel.”
Bruno’s first glimpse of the men came
while she was idling in the drive-through
lane at the McDonald’s restaurant in West
Jefferson. For years, Bruno has followed the
same routine: pull up to the speaker, order
her “problem drink” of an unsweetened iced
tea, pay, drive away, then sip as she makes
her way to London where she works as the
children services administrator at the Madison
County Department of Job and Family
Services.
Typically, she is in and out of the drivethrough
lane in less than two minutes, but
with the dine-in area closed due to the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic, she has
been spending more time than usual waiting
to order her morning—and sometimes afternoon
and evening—beverage.
Looking for something, anything, to take
her mind off of what is going on in the
world, a few weeks ago while in line, Bruno
looked to her left and saw two vehicles
parked in the area reserved for pickup of
orders made through the restaurant’s app.
This wasn’t an uncommon sight, so Bruno
didn’t think much of it initially. But as she
inched her way up the long line, she noticed
an “older gentleman” get out of his car, grab
a folding chair and sit between the two
parked vehicles.
“Again, I didn’t think too much of it, but
as I was driving away I couldn’t get the
scene out of my mind,” she said.
As she pulled up the following day, she
saw the same scene play out—and then
again the next day and the day after that.
Eventually, Bruno began to look forward to
seeing the guys.
“It just made me smile to see them all
there,” she said, recalling childhood memories
of groups of gathering farmers.
Then one morning, as she passed “their
spot” in the parking lot, she decided to get
out of her car and tell them the impact their
presence was having on her mood.
“I’m sure they thought I was some oddball,
but they were incredibly gracious,” she
said.
Ray Brown, one of the men Bruno spoke
to that morning, said he was surprised and
shocked by her declaration.
“I’m not sure anyone has ever said we
made them happy before,” he said, grinning.
Jerry Dhume, who goes by “Doomer,”
said he is still in disbelief at Bruno’s words.
“I can’t even stand these people,” he said,
poking fun at his buddies. “I’m just here for
the coffee.”
As Bruno would later learn, Brown,
Dhume and Bob Thomas typically meet in
the restaurant’s dine-in area, where they
share a meal and stories and exchange playful
jabs at each other.
“We’ve been meeting here, along with a
handful of others, for more than 10 years,”
said Thomas, who lives in Lilly Chapel.
The morning routine of Brown and
Dhume goes back ever further.
More than 50 years ago, Dhume, a longtime
resident of West Jefferson, needed a
mechanic to repair his car—a mechanic who
wouldn’t “steal all of his money.”
He was introduced to Brown, a transplant
from Kentucky, who had gained a reputation
as a backyard mechanic.
“I was cheap,” said Brown, laughing, “but
I knew what I was doing.”
During the repair process, the two
bonded over their love of cars, motorcycles
and the beautiful ladies of Madison County.
“We never liked the same girl,” said
Dhume, “and I think that’s why we kept
talking.”
Upon hearing that his new friend needed
a steadier job, Dhume pulled some strings
at Abbott Laboratories and brought Brown
on board.
“It was one of my other mistakes in life,”
he admitted.
For more than 10 years, a group of Franklin County and Madison County residents has been dining together at the McDonald’s in
West Jefferson where they share breakfast and a heaping helping of stories and gossip. With the dine-in area closed due to COVID-
19, the group has taken their long-standing routine outside to the parking lot for the time being. Shown here are some of the original
members of the group: (from left) Jerry “Doomer” Dhume, Bob Thomas and Ray Brown. Dhume and Brown reside in West Jefferson.
Thomas lives in Lilly Chapel.
“You are a mistake in life,” Brown
volleyed back.
Before going into work each day, the bantering
duo often stopped in a local dine-in
establishment and ordered coffee to nurse
on the way.
“I needed caffeine to deal with him,”
Brown said.
It is a routine they have kept for decades.
Then came Brown’s retirement and his
decision to join a group of fellow retirees for
breakfast.
“I would just meet up with them in the
morning, and we would talk about life,
share stories and a laugh, and then go about
our day,” Brown said.
One of the people he met was Thomas,
recently retired from farming and construction.
The pair hit it off by swapping stories
about growing up in rural communities and
a shared outlook on life.
West Jefferson increases water and sewer tap fees
By Josephine Birdsell
Staff Writer
On May 4, West Jefferson village council approved significant
increases to its tap fees for water and sewer services.
Tap fees are one-time charges for new construction projects tapping
into utilities the village provides. The cost depends on the size
of the line and the type of development using the line.
Previously, the tap fee for a 3/4-inch water line for single-family
residential use was $2,000. Now, it is $3,500. In the same scenario,
the tap fee for sewer went from $3,000 to $4,500.
The tap fee for a 3/4-inch water line for commercial or industrial
use went from $3,500 to $6,125. The tap fee for the same size sewer
line for the same use went from $4,500 to $6,750.
The village’s tap fees were last increased in 2013 and were low
compared to other municipalities in the area, according to John
Mitchell, West Jefferson’s director of public service. Now, the fees
are comparable to those charged by Hilliard, Westerville and other
nearby cities and villages, he said.
Council approved the new rates not only to bring them in line
with other municipalities, but also to cover the cost of recent upgrades
and repairs to the village’s water and wastewater plants and
collection and distribution systems.
The village has invested between $5 million and $6 million in
looking to build a million-gallon water tank designation of Planned Unit Development for both parcels. C o n -
at a cost of $1.25 million to $1.5 million.
In other business, council assigned zoning
to two parcels of land at the Jefferson
Local Schools high school/middle school
complex. The school district plans to construct
a new multipurpose athletic facility
on the property.
Previously, there was no record of a zoning
classification for the parcels at 681 W.
Jefferson-Kiousville Rd, and 1 Roughrider
Dr. Based on the recommendation of West
struction of the athletic facility is projected to begin after the next
village council meeting on May 18 and will last through the summer.
The 19,200 square-foot building will feature turf flooring that
can be used by athletic teams and the marching band.
“A lot of sporting groups that typically would be outside in unfavorable
weather will benefit,” said Robert Hiss, the school district’s
director of operations.
Funding for the athletic facility will come entirely from private
donations.
The next West Jefferson council meeting is set for 7 p.m. May 18.
Extension Office remains closed
OSU Extension offices throughout Ohio
will continue with teleworking arrangements
for staff during Ohio’s extended Stay
Safe Ohio order.
Ohio’s Stay Safe Ohio Order has been extended
through May 29. While some businesses
and organizations in the state are
starting to reopen, the guidelines for reopening
offices via the governor’s office require
personnel to work from home when
possible. OSU Extension has invested in
Then, when Dhume retired, the original trio of a new group was
formed.
For more than a decade, they have met at the McDonald’s in
West Jefferson, welcoming new retirees, friends and the occasional
sibling. Their latest recruit, Steve Hager of Galloway, said he looks
forward to seeing them every morning.
“I drive down here every day from Galloway just to talk to them
for a while,” he said. “I enjoy their company and the male camaraderie,
and it is something I look forward to.”
With the onset of COVID-19 and a state mandate that restaurants
close their dining rooms to slow its spread, the group—which
can number as many as nine—worried their gatherings would be put
on a long hold.
Brown was determined that would not be the case.
“I was sitting in the parking lot after picking up my coffee
through the drive-through, looking around at all of this space and
called (Dhume) and told him to get down here,” he said.
With Dhume’s approval—not that Brown was looking for it—the
two texted and called their friends to tell them they would continue
to honor their tradition but at a social distance.
“We’re not going to let this virus affect our lives this way,” Brown
said.
They admit it has taken some adjustments to find the right vehicular
configuration in order to speak with each other, and Thomas
has found he is often the one who has to brave the elements in a
folding chair. But they said they are in this for the long haul.
“I think if this goes on through the winter, this group is in trouble,”
Thomas said. “I don’t want to sit in the cold, so we’re going to
have a find a portable heater or something.”
They also have a plan for socially distancing outside of their vehicles
in warmer temperatures.
“There’s a nice little patch of grass right there where I can put
my six-foot picnic table, and we can set up chairs at a distance
around it,” Brown said, pointing to a spot on the McDonald’s property.
He said that though he often gripes about seeing his friends’
faces each day, he couldn’t imagine life without this morning routine.
“We have been through a lot together,” he said. “We have had
people with serious illnesses, people who have went through hardships,
but the one thing we’ve had throughout is the support of
everyone here.
“We like to joke around and poke at each other, but we all want
to be here together. And as I said before, we’re not going to let this
virus take that away.”

Signs of the time in West Jeff
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
When McKenna Archey headed home
from school on March 13, she didn’t think it
would be the last time she’d walk the halls
of West Jefferson High School or say goodbye
to her teachers.
And she didn’t think she’d never wear
her Riders jersey again, the one she wore
last spring as a member of the softball team
that made school history by reaching the
state Final Four.
“It’s definitely been so surreal,” she said
about the impact the coronavirus (COVID-
19) pandemic has had on her senior year.
Archey understands why schools were
ordered closed for the rest of the year and
why graduation will look very different from
what students before her have experienced.
“It’s because they want to keep everyone
healthy, but it’s hard not to think, ‘Why our
class?’” she said.
In the same breath, though, Archey
talked about the resilience of her classmates
and the way the community has rallied behind
them.
“We’re walking through this all together,
hand-in-hand. We’re going to get through it
as one whole,” she said. “There’s no use sitting
around complaining. We have our
whole futures to look forward to, and we
need to let the community’s support carry
us to it.”
A recent example of that support came in
the form of congratulatory signs planted in
the yards of all 92 West Jefferson High
School seniors.
Inspired by a video she saw on Facebook
about a similar effort in another town, resident
Paula Hay coordinated the sign project
with the help of fellow residents Bonnie and
Terry Ward and Steve Warner.
Hay’s granddaughter, Kayleen Martin, is
a member of West Jefferson’s Class of 2020.
“I see the hurt that she feels because she
has missed out on so much fun,” Hay said.
“These kids have worked so hard for 13
Morgan Boyd, a senior at West Jefferson High School, poses with
a congratulatory sign placed in her yard.
years. We want them to know the community is thinking of them
and proud of them.”
Hay presented the sign idea on a Facebook page she created a
few years ago, “West Jefferson (A Community Making a Difference),”
first asking for students’ addresses.
“Within 48 hours, I had all 92 addresses,” she said.
It took just another six hours to raise the $875 needed to pay for
the yard signs, as well as a large banner.
Hay then recruited first responders from the West Jefferson Police
Department, Jefferson Township Fire Department, West Jefferson
Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Madison
County Sheriff’s Office to form a small parade for delivery of the
signs, which took place on the afternoon of May 4.
“I chose first responder vehicles because they have lights and
sirens and can make a lot of noise,” Hay said with a laugh.
She asked parents to keep the project a secret from their children
until delivery time. As for how it went, she said, “The kids loved it!
The smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile.”
Archey was one of those seniors smiling from ear to ear. She was
surprised and touched by the gesture.
“The signs are fantastic!” she said. “They show that the community
is with us and they have our backs through it all. West Jefferson
is one big family, in my book.”

Wearing cloth face
coverings is a considerate
and effective public
health measure people should take to reduce
the spread of COVID-19 in Madison
County. Public health experts recommend
that everyone wear a cloth face covering
when going out in public as the state begins
rolling out the Responsible Restart Ohio
plan. Face coverings help protect people
around you by catching droplets carrying
virus particles that may come out of your
nose or mouth.
The virus that causes COVID-19 illness
spreads mainly between people who are in
close contact with one another. COVID-19
spreads very easily from person to person,
and small droplets containing the virus can
remain suspended in the air for hours. Social
distancing increases the physical space
between people (recommended at least six
feet) to help limit the spread. By combining
face coverings and social distancing, we significantly
slow the spread of the virus.
In public health, we always use evidencebased
practices to form and support our decisions.
There is still a lot we don’t know about
this virus. We are only three months into the
pandemic in the United States. We are using
best practices from past experiences to protect
the community. I am confident we have
made the right decisions in Ohio.
Memorial Day
parade cancelled
Due to the strong
possibility that Governor
Mike DeWine’s
letter
order prohibiting gatherings of 10 people or
more will last through the month of May, we
regretfully announce the cancellation of the
Plain City 2020 Memorial Day parade and
ceremony at the cemetery. This decision was
made after discussion among the chairmen
of the Memorial Day committee.
Most of our veterans who participate in
the parade are in the extremely vulnerable
category for COVID-19 due to age and underlying
medical conditions. We think it is
much better to be safe than sorry.
This has been a hard decision to make, but
we feel that is the right thing to do. So, we are
looking forward to having a great 2021 parade
to help make up for this cancelation.
Protect others: Wear
face covering in public
guest column
The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
estimates that
about 25 percent of people with COVID-19
may be asymptomatic or have very mild
symptoms. There are Madison County residents
who had no symptoms at all but
tested positive for the virus.
When people are sick, I like to think they
do the right thing and stay home. But people
who are asymptomatic go about their
normal lives—and what they are doing is
spreading the illness to their friends and
family without knowing it. This is why the
Stay Safe Ohio Order, the use of face coverings,
and mass gatherings limits are still in
place. We all have a job to do—and that’s to
be considerate and help each other during
this pandemic.
A cloth face covering should be worn
whenever you go out in public. Coverings
should fit snugly, cover your nose, mouth,
and chin, and be made of fabric you cannot
see through. Do not place a face covering on
children younger than 2 years old, on people
who have trouble breathing, or those who
cannot remove it themselves. For ideas on
how to make a face covering with a t-shirt
or bandana, visit covid.madisonph.org.
Face coverings will catch droplets that
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation
(BCI), headquartered in London, has
implemented the quantitative analysis of
marijuana in drug evidence seized by law
enforcement.
“BCI’s new ability to differentiate between
marijuana and hemp creates a valuable
resource for officers who depend on our
laboratory services, offered at no cost to
them,” said Ohio Attorney General Dave
Yost.
57. The quantitative analysis of a sample
determines the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
content.
Senate Bill 57 changed the Ohio Revised
Code definition of marijuana to exclude
hemp, defined as cannabis containing not
more than 0.3 percent THC as calculated on
the dried weight. With this definition
change, marijuana could no longer be identified
conclusively with past techniques,
such as microscopic examination and chemical
color testing.
“Ohio prosecutors are very appreciative
of the hard work that Attorney General Yost
and BCI have done to bring this critical testing
capability to Ohio,” said Louis Tobin, executive
director of the Ohio Prosecuting
Attorneys Association.
“Since the legalization of hemp last summer,
law enforcement has struggled to enforce
Ohio marijuana laws due to an inability
to distinguish between marijuana and
hemp. Expensive private testing was often
the only solution... (Now) Ohio prosecutors
will be better able to enforce our drug laws
and protect Ohioans.”
Soon after the bill became law, the Ohio
Attorney General’s Office offered grant
funding for law enforcement agencies to test
suspected marijuana at other accredited
laboratories until BCI could modify its testing
techniques. Law enforcement agencies
received $3,972 in grant funding to test
samples in eight cases tied to more than 20
felony charges.
BCI is pursuing additional validation
studies for quantitative testing of other
THC-infused food products.
She has lived from one pandemic to the next
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Very few people living today can say they experienced not one,
but two pandemics during their lifetimes. London resident Geraldine
Henry is one of those people.
Geraldine was 5 years old in 1918 at the onset of the Spanish
flu, which lasted into 1919 and infected nearly a third of the world’s
population. When sharing stories about the pandemic, Geraldine
referred to it as “the terrible sickness.”
“She used to talk about how when she and her mother came into
town from the farm, her mother would have her wait outside the
Gross, who has known Geraldine her entire
life and serves as her power of attorney.
Also from that time, Geraldine recalled
how the church her family attended on
Route 56 was closed for several months.
Now, she is living through the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic, and in the
midst of it, turned 107 years old.
Born on April 28, 1913, Geraldine is the
only child of the late William and Cora
Henry. William was a farmer who later
served as caretaker of First United
Methodist Church of London. Cora was a
housewife.
The family moved from the country to
East Fourth Street in London in 1945,
where Geraldine lived until six years ago
when she became a resident at Sisters On
Geraldine was a Sunday school teacher,
church historian and member of several committees.
A graduate of Cedarville College, Geraldine spent her working
life as a teacher, first at Catawba High School then at Northeastern
High School. She primarily taught American history.
“She was loved by all of her students,” Cindy said. “And she
loved her students. Whenever you talk to any of them, they say she
was firm but fair and she always treated everyone equally.”
For many, many years, Geraldine attended the Catawba school
reunions.
The same care she showed to her students, Geraldine showed to
her parents, for whom she cared into their late years, and to others.
“She used to make angel food cakes whenever someone was sick,
there was a death, or someone needed a pick-me-up. That was kind
of her ministry,” Cindy said.
Geraldine also adores cats. At one time, she had a cat named
Ruffey that she walked on a leash like a dog. She also was known
to take alley cats under her wing.
“Whenever she started feeding one of them, I’d say that was that
cat’s lucky day to have met Geraldine Henry. She spoiled them. She
took really good
care of them—not
Known for her quick wit and sense of
a big appetite.
“One of her favorite expressions is, “I can
eat like a farmhand,’” Cindy said, noting
that Geraldine watched her mother feed the
she still has a great appetite, especially for
cookies.”
Here’s to a full life.

Celebrating a century of service and enthusiasm
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
“She has always believed she was going to make her 100th birthday,”
said Debbie Vecchiarelli about her mother, Mary Komives.
Mary knew what she was talking about. On April 22, the London
resident did indeed hit the century mark.
Her family arranged for a big party at Der Dutchman in Plain
City. More than 40 guests, including some from Florida, planned
to attend before the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
closed restaurants and prohibited large gatherings.
While the party is postponed, the celebration of a woman who
“loved to go, go, go” goes on.
Mary was born in Virginia in 1920 to Mary and Andy Orosz, natives
of Hungary. She later moved to Ohio, living in Columbus and
Bexley before moving to London in 2003.
Grant aids senior
citizens in need
during pandemic
Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) received a grant
from Aetna, a CVS Health business, supporting its response to the
COVID-19 outbreak. The grant is part of more than $1 million that
CVS Health and its foundations have given to address food insecurity
and other community needs in response to the challenges presented
by the pandemic.
“We serve people in their homes who would otherwise reside in
nursing facilities,” said Cindy Farson, COAAA director. “They often
have multiple conditions that impact their health. This Aetna grant
ensures that physically vulnerable consumers can limit their exposure
to threats. Individuals started to receive assistance from the
fund immediately.”
Aetna awarded $40,000 to help COAAA consumers with urgent
needs, including food assistance, rent assistance, household items,
prescriptions, toiletries, and home repairs for health and safety. The
agency has more than 250 social workers and registered nurses who
continue to be in telephone contact with more than 10,500 consumers
in the agency’s eight-county region to ensure that they have the assistance
and services needed. The region includes Madison County.
One consumer was released from the hospital but was unprepared
for Governor Mike Dewine’s stay-at-home order. Her case
manager said, “We were able to use the Aetna funding for emergency
groceries which was such a relief for her.”
“We know that as a result of the disruption caused by the COVID-
19 outbreak, there are many people in the communities we serve
who are faced with urgent needs,” said Eileen Howard Boone, senior
vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility & Philanthropy at
CVS Health and president of the CVS Health Foundation. “As part
of our ongoing commitment to building healthier communities, we
are pleased to support COAAA in response to this pandemic.”
“The Area Agencies on Aging in Columbus, Cincinnati and
Toledo are critical partners for Aetna Better Health of Ohio, and
we are pleased to provide additional funds to them during this very
challenging pandemic,” said Tony Solem, CEO of Aetna Better
Health of Ohio. “They know their communities and where the greatest
needs are, and we are proud to support their efforts to take care
of vulnerable Ohioans.”
Mary raised four children. Debbie hails from London,
as does Marty Komives. Their siblings, Patty Sullivan and
Alex Komives, reside in Florida.
“She has been a wonderful mother to us and lots of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Debbie said.
“She was a wonderful wife to our father (Alex) until he
passed away in 1975.”
Mary retired in 1983 from the State of Ohio Health Department,
where she performed clerical work. She then
set about traveling the world, venturing to Hawaii,
Alaska, South America and Europe.
“She’s been to a lot of places and always enjoyed herself,”
Debbie said.
Mary also has been active in her community.
“She didn’t like staying at home. She wasn’t the
grandma type that sat at home and rocked in a rocking
chair,” Debbie said. “She liked to participate in everything
going on in London.”
Mary volunteered at HELP House Community Outreach
for 15 years, most often on Monday nights when she
helped to register clients stopping by for a hot meal,
clothes and food.
“She really enjoyed it, and she talked a bunch of other
people into doing it, too,” Debbie said.
Mary also volunteered in the kitchen at the Madison
County Senior Center and is a member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church, where she served on several committees
over the years.
Mary currently resides at Sisters On Elm assisted living
‘e Half of It’ close
to being wholly good
In the year 2020, originality is hard to
come by in any film, let alone those that fall
under the romantic comedy umbrella. It
could be that they share similar elements,
making it seem like they are a singular entity,
or it could be because a majority of
them are adapted from famed literary properties.
Either way, it can be a real struggle
to find a romantic comedy that truly feels
like a one-of-a-kind.
The latest film to borrow the prototype
from a classic tale is “The Half of It,” now
streaming on Netflix. Based on Edmond Rostand’s
1897 play, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” the
former has that overwhelming sense of familiarity
as the latter has seen its fair share
of adaptations. That lack of originality is not
a deterrent, however, as modernity and
heart make this romantic comedy feel fresh
and, dare I say, almost one-of-a-kind.
“The Half of It” centers around Ellie Chu
(Leah Lewis), a lonely gay teen living in a
small town in the Pacific Northwest. Despite
having moved to this little corner of
the country from China years prior, she has
accumulated a grand total of zero friends
but has amassed a large number of customers
who pay the straight-A student to
“assist” them through their high school
courses.
Knowing of her reputation as a strong
writer, Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer), a
kind but inarticulate jock, tries to enlist
Ellie’s help in crafting the perfect love letter
to the school’s most beautiful girl, Aster Flores
(Alexxis Lemire). Holding a very secret
torch for Aster herself, Ellie declines, stating
that writing a love letter is a personal
endeavor that he should attempt himself.
And he does, much to the dismay of
Ellie’s sense of the eloquent written word as
she proofreads his creation. In a quiet pew
at the local church, she rereads his letter almost
as a confessional, hearing him wax poetic
about Aster’s looks and his fondness for
dipping French fries in chocolate milkshakes.
Having her own sense of who Aster
is, Ellie immediately rejects his first wooing
measure, taking it upon herself to craft that
perfect love letter.
But then she plagiarizes a line from an
old movie she watched at dinner with her
father (Collin Chou) and is promptly busted
by Aster for the lack of originality. Aster
does, however, tell “him” via return letter to
try harder next time so she can really get to
know who he is.
Feeling as if this is a challenge, Ellie begins
to forge a correspondence with Aster
through letters signed by Paul. Throughout
the film, the two bond over literature, history,
art and unexpressed dreams of making
Junior Achievement of Mad River Region
(which includes Madison County) is holding
a Virtual “Best Ball” golf tournament June
1-15 at Reid Golf Course, 1325 S. Bird Rd,
a new life outside of
Squahamish. These
subjects, of course,
have little interest
to Paul, though to
his credit he does
try to keep up with
the interests of the two new women in his
life.
As time goes on, Aster and Paul begin to
go on secret dates outside of town [Aster has
a beau her pastor father wholeheartedly approves
of] and grow closer through Ellie’s
words. As the relationship forges ahead, so
too does Ellie’s friendship with Paul, making
her feel all the more guilty for wishing
she was taking Paul’s place in Aster’s life.
While pulling elements of Rostand’s tale,
“The Half of It” primarily mines the lived
experience of its writer and director, Alice
Wu, who grew up as a closeted social outcast
in a small town. She peppers the film with
personal and humorous touches, but she
also doesn’t pull punches when it comes to
some smalltown views on immigrants and
the sexual orientation of others. This is a
film that feels lived-in, almost like an ode to
that friend who helped you discover the nuance
of the word “love” and a jab at those
whose minds are as small as their towns.
For the most part, “The Half of It” is unveiled
at a slow pace, allowing the audience
to get to know Ellie, Daniel and Paul as real
characters who are making self discoveries
on the way to adulthood. Then the third act
goes full steam ahead, revealing the deception
in the most public way. Films in this
genre have a tendency to go all out when
trying to make a statement and, unfortunately,
“The Half of It” falls victim to that
trope. Had it stuck to a quieter reveal, it
would have been an almost perfect slice of
cinema.
Despite that hiccup, “The Half of It” is a
truly sweet and tender film about romantic
longing, that first friendship and that desire
to reach for something more in your life.
While it may be a romantic comedy geared
more toward the young adult audience, I
think those outside of that age group also
will be able to relate and enjoy this cinematic
hug of a not-quite-original-but-one-ofa-kind
movie.
