The Brighter Side

Life is a long and continuous road

A road with many bumps

A road that will be easier to go through when looking on the brighter side

Easier to see through when on the brighter side

The brighter side can blind you with positivity

On the brighter side you always carry a smile

On the brighter side you shine

Forever be radiant

If you give negative thoughts an inch, the road will feel like a mile longer

On the dark side it’s harder to realize what life should be

It’s harder to reach your goals

If you look at the dark side

The dark side will look back

The dark side with create a new path

A path of failure

A path of hardship

A path with many bumps

The brighter side will give you opportunities

The dark side will take them away

The right direction to go is the one that you choose

The right direction to go is the one that benefits you

That one that puts a smile on your face

The one that encourages you

The way to go through that road is to go look on the right side

The bright side

The Storms in My Ocean

Calm. The calm before the storm. The calm that foreshadows

the swirls of emotion. The anger, frustrations, and total helplessness

spinning around and around, twisting and churning into a

dangerous cyclone of derangement. It grows with each passing moment,

like a storm over water, it swells until it completely invelopes

my soul. Leaving me in the darkness with no way out. Delirious and

scared, I watch the tornado rip apart everything I love as I drown

in my own tears until I can no longer breathe. Then there is nothing,

the storm implodes in on itself, and leaves a sinking soul in the

middle of the ocean. An ocean that is once again calm.

Absorbent Sponge

SpongeBob SquarePants lives underneath the sea,

His annoying laugh echoes all through town

With a Gary, and a pineapple tree

He spends his days acting like a big clown

A Krabby Patty brings SpongeBob much joy

He got a really nice big square booty

Who knows, maybe the krab is made with soy

The soy makes his spatula so greasy

His best buds are the squid and Patrick Star

Somehow, a squirrel lives underneath the sea

Bikini Bottom is not very far

Squidward tries to live in peace, but you see

SpongeBob and Patrick play all the long day

The end of the day SpongeBob screams hooray

The world is fragile. It is a seemingly vast residence for sustaining

life, and a priceless place where vivid and vibrant colors are

displayed. Y.O.L.O. You only live once. A phrase humankind takes

for granted. We have been given a beautiful gift, yet we decide to

gut it from the inside out. Precious resources once flowed through

the veins of the earth before it was cut open and bled dry. Nature is

graceful in all its glory. It has a delicate balance which is being shattered.

The sun-scorched earth continues to burn right before our

oblivious eyes. Every day continues to get hotter than the one before.

It is now snowing in what used to be our crystal clear oceans.

Pollution and grease float down like flakes of destruction down to

the life underwater. It is a blizzard of filth and contamination. We

thought we could tame the never-ending summer by turning to

the shadows of past generations to blame for our problems. We all

point guilty fingers.

Anticipation

My heartbeat matches the ticking of the clock

I shake my leg, tapping the leg of the chair

With the inside of my red adidas sneaker

I’m waiting

I’m being patient

Breathing, like my mother taught me

The sun doesn’t move fast enough

and my hands sweat with anticipation

Five hours

Five minutes

Five seconds

I’m there

I’m breathing

This is the moment I’ve been waiting for.

- Jacob Gutierrez

The Medicine of You

- Nyah

I wasted time trying to please the world

To be a light inside the endless dark

But beneath me hatred for myself burned

An endless flame after one little spark

Just being in myself I felt restless

Uncomfortable with my mind and my heart

So much so my loathing beat me senseless

From myself I soon began to depart

Then you came in and saved my d’fective soul

Your own poured out kindness and flooded mine

Drowned the fire that kept from being whole

My reason for living redefined

Perhaps if we are a little more kind

Out world would not be, as I was, so blind

To Amelia

A girl with a loving heart turns to me

With blonde hair and a warm smile on her face

She has a tan and beautiful green eyes

Hates country songs, but loves a southern boy

She lays next to me as we talk and laugh

I say that I want to love her once more

For I have known before, as she has me

She looks at me and I know what she means

When I asked for a chance to try again

I was afraid that she had lost interest

We both thought that we had moved on by then

Then I realized that it was not over

I now have somebody to think about

When a slow song plays on the radio.

I could not give her the wish

though she only answered for one

and hid it in the chambers

deep in her broken heart

she asked for hazy summer afternoons

after fast-fading mornings

she asked for snow-dusted mornings

for a moment’s light and peace

she asked for secret, small adventures

that last forever but end in a wink

she asked for late-night memories

of star-crossed souls on a cloudy night

she asked for timeless experiences

in a limited existence

she asked to share my life with her

to end a crippling loneliness

my acceptance torn from my mouth

by a snake hidden as a twig

as her fangs sink in deep

my heart pumps the venom

and dots dance across my vision

blurring and blinding me from

the life we could’ve shared

as my lungs push out my last breath

and the snake steals my life

I regret granting one wish for the world

The world at times seems to toil away

Was it a minute or hour that passed?

Did I brush my teeth? My hair? My cat?

Where has the time gone

I check under the couch

Wave my hand back and forth, hoping to find something solid

T’was for naught

And now my hand is covered in dust

I stand up

Sigh

Wipe my hands on my pants

Turning to leave, I face the window

The dust, casually wiped away, now floats

Suspended in the air

Practically twinkling

Twisting and turning, not bound by gravity

An enchanting moment

Wait. A moment. A pause

I found my time.

Time

So simple yet so precious

Too much of it

Until there is none left

It flies by

In the blink of an eye

Most of us

Not appreciating its value

Until it's too late

Had you entered that afternoon,

When the skies were blue and I missed your ripped jean jacket

We might have held hands as we walked down the street

And when your name chimed on my phone I would’ve smiled

But you were busy

With work or a friend’s lost dog or a million other excuses

So instead of waiting for your footsteps, I left

And I walked down the street on my own.

And when my phone chimes now, I’m looking for a different name

I don’t miss you

When I walked under the blue skies that afternoon, the world was

still beautiful.

The leaves swirled around me and the sun coated the street in gold.

And I met a stranger with beautiful eyes

And the world was okay without you in it

Maybe if you had entered that afternoon, things would be different.

But I’m glad you didn’t because my life is so beautiful now.

The Boy

His eyes glistened and I saw our future

My heart will break and crumble into pieces

His hair, his eyes, his lips, and his pride

All have a common interest for my love

Once its all destroyed we will rebuild

Love can not take control of my life

But when I speak my truth you shall hear me

And when it breaks your love will endear me

No one could ever break the bond we have

For I will forever love you and cherish you

But life will always be tuff and very sad

So I hope for the best and I returned with the worst

That’s the way that love works, horribly

You hope it will succeed but you fail, miserably

Generation Mind

The ship drifted towards the dim husk that was a brown

dwarf. Though nothing more than a failed star, barely larger than

a planet, it was the first warmth the ship had encountered in the

last thousand years, and it was the only warmth it would see for a

thousand more. When the ship drifted close enough, a parabolic

heat-reflecting mirror began to direct the dim infrared light into an

elegantly designed turbine. A small note, hastily written on the side

of the turbine and mirrored in the ship’s log, warned anyone who

might see it that the turbine needed to be oiled before the ship left

the star system. As the turbine began to turn, a strange, almost welcoming

hum began to fill the ship. No creature was there to witness

it.

The ship drifted closer to the dim failed star for almost five

years. Had anyone been there to read it, a small note, hastily scribbled,

as if by a dying hand, in the margin of the ship’s log read, almost

apologetically, “the brown dwarf is all we could find. The next

cycle will be short.” The turbine continued to turn, slowly speeding

up as the ship got steadily closer. It had begun to squeak sometime

in the last year, and risked failing if not oiled. There was nobody to

see to it. Not yet. The turbine continued to speed up. When it got to

some unspecified critical speed, internal machinery began to turn.

Large metallic spheres in the hold opened, and the much smaller,

rock-like items inside them were covered in what little water existed

on the ship. The ship continued to drift. Another two years passed,

and the several small planets that orbited the brown dwarf could be

seen from the windows of the ship, were there anyone onboard with

eyes. Something on the ship saw them, though, because a navigation

engine had switched on sometime in the last six months and

was slowly, but surely, directing the ship towards the desolate ball

of ice that was the third planet. The strange rock-like objects had

swelled slightly in the last five years, and one could now tell that

they were, indeed, a living creature. The floor of the room they were

stored in, when exposed to water, had transformed into an almost

gelatinous material rich in nutrients, and the creatures spent all of

their time feeding off it.

24

The star loomed ever larger in the windows, and the squeaking

from the turbine had gotten so bad that it could be heard

throughout the entire ship, if anything in the ship had ears willing

to listen. Something could almost listen, though; the strange

creatures in the hold had stopped eating, and had gone back to the

metal spheres they had come out of. They sat in the spheres, their

outsides slowly turning into a hard, bone-like material. The ship

drifted ever closer. By now, the icy planet almost filled the great

windows in the front of the ship; the surface was not visible, and

there was no light to illuminate it, but one could tell where it was by

where the stars behind it weren’t.

The hard cases in the hold began to undergo their final metamorphosis.

The outside surfaces darkened, and began to crack. Only

then, when the ship was within a month of landing, did the ship’s

inhabitants crawl out. They woke up with a sense of purpose; all

the memories they needed to survive, all the instincts they needed

to run the ship, were embedded in their genetics. They looked over

the log from the last generation, and shook their heads sadly. It was

going to be a short cycle; they had to get to work immediately. The

turbine was oiled, the mechanics of the ship carefully inspected.

The unused light-collecting heating panels were sadly folded up and

stowed away. The ship was within days of landing, and it was a blur

of activity.

When the day came for the ship to land, this activity increased

a thousandfold. Environment suits were prepared for use,

and mining vehicles were oiled and polished. The atmospheric collectors,

the most recent of the many innovations aboard the ship,

were expanded for use during the ship’s descent. The ship’s log was

dutifully filled out: a log, not for them, but for the next generation.

The navigational engines had switched off, and the landing engines

had come online. The ship turned as it hurtled towards the icy mass

of rock, so that it would enter what little atmosphere that existed at

as shallow an angle as possible. The ship was a buzz of activity as

it hurtled towards the planet. When it was close enough, the great

landing engines switched on, slowly bringing the ship to a gentle

landing on the surface of the planet. Now, less than a year from

their hatching, the inhabitants of the ship could begin their great

25

work. The mining ships went out, digging up great chunks of ice

chunks of ice rich in the materials that would both grow food and

fuel the ship’s engines. Every day, when the planet turned towards

the weak heat of the failed star and the turbines began to turn, the

atmospheric collectors would whine as they collected as much of

the thin atmosphere as possible. Onboard the ship, the great ideas

of the generation were discussed and written down in logs, so that

they would not be forgotten. These philosophers discussed the ethics

of their species, the science of their ship, and a newly discovered

way of making the engines more efficient. They wrote books, made

conjectures, and painted great works; this cycle would be a short

one, so they had no time for idleness.

For a year they toiled, but at last, the fateful day arrived. It

was almost six months from their arrival, and the navigators, as

their faces filled with the wrinkles of old age, had set a course for

the next star; this time, a much brighter star, with several planets in

its habitable zone; the next cycle would be a long one. The fuel tanks

were full, the spheres in the hold full of eggs, and the atmospheric

compressor had collected enough of the various materials needed

to live for the next generation. The crew were dying. There were

few enough of them left, old and frail, and they knew their days

were numbered; after all, this cycle had been short. They finished

their lives’ works, their great paintings and tomes of knowledge;

the more ambitious projects were left to the next generation. When

the final day came, the last one sat, watching the heavens drift by,

as the ship lifted off the barren, icy ground and drifted out into the

star-filled sea.

Moonlit (A Short Story)

In the beginning, there was only

the moonlight. Then the sun rose,

a great battle began. Within seconds

the Sun had pushed the Moon over

on the run. For the Sun pierced the

Moon with fear. Years passed as

Earth watched the Sun chase the

pale light away; helpless to do anything.

Every morning a new arrival

A new emotion would loom over my heart

Consuming the day that follows

I sometimes wonder why we feel

What part of evolution decided to curse us

What part of survival includes swooning over another

Why do we despise others

Why do we feel guilty for our past

Why do we cry over what could have been

I hate waking up every morning

Knowing that sorrow will swallow me whole

The Space Between

The space between

the world of dreams

and the place where you awake

is lost in time and space.

At a snail's pace in an endless race

Where the rivers of creativity flow

where the winds may blow

the memories that go away to live in peace.

You find it in the early morning

and the dark of night

when the levee of the mind breaks loose

without a single fright,

only then can you see

the land of lost memories.

Past meets future

and present is lost

in that swirling mixing frost.

Solid liquid

gaseous thought

what is real and what is not?

All is one

one is all

in that secret seething maw.

From this land an author speaks

a poet sings

a philosopher thinks.

The fog is thick but one can see

the place where one's thoughts are finally free.

Free to run and free to wander.

Free to seek the weirder wonders

Not quite waking

not quite sleeping

into the mind thoughts are seeping.

In this place

one can be free

in endless dreams and memories.

Fragile She Is

The world is fragile. She tips in the wind with the force of a

blow and she crumples beneath the feet of her superiors. Pieces break

off and immerse in the tears and the rage of the forgotten. Hopeless,

she is at the mercy of them. The they that turns the clarity of the sky

into murky isolation and the they that demolishes the beauty in her

once youthful features. It is they who will live on, neglecting, taking

advantage of what she has to give. For they do not know the force of

the wind and the rise of the tide is at her mercy, not theirs. The ruins

she leaves behind only serve as a reminder of her power. Though they

will never be as powerful as she, she trembles at the thought of them.

Those who have forgotten she is delicate, like the flowers, bursting

with color and life, but once a tender and vulnerable bud, always

a bud. Those who have forgotten she is sensitive, sensitive to the

change in rising heat and stupiditty, sensitive to the vast holes of the

apathetic have created. For they have forgotten she is fragile.

It's Always With You

“The beast comes out of the sea”

Slivering, no, crawling to find something to eat

“Out of the dark”

He quietly sneaks around

Shivers crawl up your spine until he drags you down

Kicking, screaming, so loud and clear

Everyones asleep, so not a soul will hear

He takes you to his home somewhere far away

In the water you ask but are lead to your dismay

As he climbs higher, here comes the day

Light begins to shine

You see him strung on a line being pushed against the breeze

But all along you were wrong

The beast doesn't live in the sea or trees

He lives somewhere you'll never find

Your mind.

Simon Says

The wind blows my hair away from my face

I hear water in the distance

Throughout all this peace

There is still chaos

It never seems to stop

There’s a war and never ceasing

It’s here and there, everywhere

Never stopping is this terrible noise

Inside my head, someone somewhere is suffering

“The thing is fear cannot hurt you anymore than a dream.”

But this dream of peace does hurt

Because we know it will

Never exist in humanity

But we hope, forever.

She sees beauty in everything

Even in objects and places considered hideous

She loves to see the sunset

It is a luminous orange

That paints the Sandia Mountains every evening

A faded yet bright pink

With scattered black spots

The boy next door, is the opposite

Never bothering to look beyond the surface

Or even give anything a second glance

He sees her, yet he truly is blind to her

He believed she was a waste of space

Just like the surrounding desert

Empty with nothing but dust and dead plants

But one evening he followed

Through the bosque

Where she climbed a strong old cottonwood

High enough that she was illuminated by the sunset

This time he couldn’t look away

His heart flooded with admiration

As her beauty spread out

Past the bosque

And for enough to reach the volcanoes

All of it was the thin white dress

It blew in peace and calmness against the violent wind

The other halfway was her her face

Those spanish eyes were bluer than the Rio Grande it’s

Black hair with unending waves flying everywhere

A round face of pale copper from the Navajos

Glowing against irredescent rays of orange and yellow

She looked at him with a smile

She asked, Did the clouds finally move from your eyes?

Rain

Climbing the steps, I looked out over the reflected sky, whose

waves broke on its countenance, with eyes like stars and a smile

of seaweed, floating through the turmoil, spittle landing upon the

shore. Behind me, the light turns again, a lone candle in the untamed

world, and the foghorn blows - the deep, carrying roar of

the great blue monster that lies sleeping below me. The lighthouse

stands as a single strand of hair in the endless sea, in the great

puddle of ink spilled upon a windowsill, the rain comes down and

fills the night-stained depths with waves.

The shadows sleep with the swallows

As the sun rises from its rest

Concealing secret tragedies

Awoken by a crimson night

The stars chase away

A blue, blue day

And poke holes in a dark blanket of night

To breathe

The stray dogs greet the moon

With heartbroken howls

Of long-lost lovers

Reunited

And a broken soul

Tears in half

In relief and pain

To feel no more

When the darkness fades away

A shell remains

And the pieces of her

She tore apart herself

Glow tauntingly in the light

Of a treacherous lie.

Sand

You are the beach

Everywhere I look

Even in the water

You are there

I take one step out of the car

My feet are already burning

Almost like walking on fire

Every step I take is more painful than the last

With no way to get away until the water

When I try to walk closer to the water with shoes on

You somehow find a way to get in them

Then kick sand on myself and others

Which makes everyone angry

Because their sandwich is now crunchy

After I take my shoes off

You get between my toes

Making me uncomfortable in every movement

Once I touch you

You follow me like an unwanted shadow

Sticking to anything you touch

When I try to escape you follow me home

I see you for days after I have gone

In my hair

In the car

On my skin

All over

What I Remember. I Don’t.

Around 2019 Mom and I go to Nick’s graduation. I am wearing a

green floral dress and pantyhoes. Jesse and Laura are happy to see

my face and tear up at the slideshow video. I feel mixed about the

situation, but keep my mouth shut. He does not remember me. Good.

Around 2005 Mom tells me she’s getting me and my brother a new

babysitter. I run and hide in the large alcove window and watch Ionia

walk up the path. We’re still friends to this day.

Around 2014 we go on a plane to travel to England. We start fighting.

It lasts most of the trip. Mom still gets me a stuffed animal of the

Egyptian cat goddess, Bastet, at the British Museum. She has silky

black fur and smooth and soft gold colored fake jewelry.

Around 2006 my dad takes my brother to school, so I tag along. I

awaken in a hospital dazed and confused. The nurse has me answer a

series of questions. When I turn to my mom, she wants to know what

I remember. I don’t.

Around 2015 I come out to my family. They do not bat an eye and are

fine with it. I feel mixed. Not everyone comes out and is shunned, it

seems.

- Qui Ton-That

46

Around 2008 we go fly fishing in Alderbrook, NY. I hook dad with

seven hooks. The closest ER is two hours away. Later, dad carries me

around on his shoulders.

Around 2018 I meet Genevieve online and we have a voice chat after

the ceremony of my sister’s wedding. She is super sweet and kind to

me. We talk for hours about the movie, Coco. We are still friends to

this day.

Around 2010 our Great Pyrenese, Carl, is sent to the vet to be put

down on my 9th birthday.

Around 2002 I crawl out of my wooden crib without help.

Around 2015 Nick sexually harsses me and I stay quiet about it for

months.

Around 2020 I get into Whittier College in California and start planning

my future. I recite a poem for 12th grade English class in front of

my classmates. I am wearing a single stud earring in my left ear and

my regular clothing. I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.

Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix is an almost perfectly flat city,

Formatted in a nearly perfect grid,

Colored red, brown, gray, and green,

Where spots of white, pink, and purple wink from the bushes.

Palm trees dry up in the sizzling heat,

More planes fly by than clouds drift overhead,

And the hills and mountains are close enough to touch.

From the east, you might think it’s Albuquerque;

From the north: Anaheim;

And from the west, if you squint, you might just see Honolulu.

The last time I was here, I still believed in a god.

The last time I was here, I could still call you mine.

Our memories prick like one hundred saguaros.

Those memories hurt less than they did yesterday;

They hurt much less than they did all of five years ago.

The trees turn away from me, towards the west,

Like they’d rather be in Burbank with you than here with me.

I can’t honestly say I feel much different.

Saying “I miss you” never feels like enough.

After all, it hasn’t been enough to draw you back here.

To be fair, I didn’t come here to kneel at your altar,

But each day I still pray for your return,

And when the sun falls, the stars will flicker your name.

Innocence

She runs through the forest her long brown hair lightly touching the

trees

Her white dress fluttering in the wind

Suddenly she stops and sees a beautiful red apple ahead of her

Calling to her as if it were her mother

But something stops her from entering the unknown

The bright moon glistened and reflected off the apple

It was almost as if the moon was telling her to stop and go home

It became dark and she realized her dress was dirty and spotted

All she wanted was to go home

She awakens to the slow pulsing of the everlasting train

Her hair, now black, slowly swaying back and forth

Her gray clothing dull and toneless just like everyone else

She catches a glimpse of the bright moon

She wants nothing but to go back to the time where the blue skies

were endless

The train slowly crawling towards the sunrise of the North

Suddenly it jerks left and they are plunged into darkness

They head toward the sunset in the west

Before the everlasting train comes to a stop

She catches a final glance at the moon

And its radiant white light surrounding it

The light was a blanket of soft cloudlike warmth

She felt it

She yearned for it

Before the coldness of the night swept her off her feet

Into the forest

Sun low on the horizon, driving west

Coming out from under the deep shadow of the trees

Light crucifies me, pinning me to my seat

As the entire world turns reddish gold

Back into the shadows, driving north

Turning at a stop sign that appears as a silhouette

Shadows flicker by

Like an image from an old projector

Everything's bisected

Like a fly, half swallowed by amber

On the background of dark rock

Sun setting, driving east

The street signs reflect the sun's last rays

Mirroring the distant mountains

As the car goes by, it eclipses them

Shadowing them, like a microcosm of the coming dusk

Dusk comes

And the shadows come with it

Held by streetlights

And the lights of home
