The westside community was treated to a bit of fun, flare and
fashion as a caravan of uniquely adorned vehicles rolled
throughout the area on May 9. The Cruising the Hilltop Art Car
Parade, which was organized by Patti Von Niessen of Summer
Jam West and renowned art car enthusiast Greg Phelps, featured
more than 10 vehicles decked out in paint, doll parts,
trinkets, coins and just about anything else one can think of.
The intent of the event, said Von Niessen, was to bring a joy
and happiness to the Hilltop community as they spotted the
vehicles making their rounds.
mascot of the non-profit organization.
Bottom right, the glove compartment of Micki B. Pike’s vehicle
was made to resemble the fairy garden outside of her home.
The westside resident said she has been adding adornments
onto her Jeep Compass as a tribute to artist Haider Ali, who
she credited with sparking her interest in car art. Ali painted
peacocks and other decals on her vehicle more than three
years ago and Pike said she has not stopped adding items to
it since.
City tries to curb
illegal dumping
By Andrea Cordle
Westside Editor
The city of Columbus is reaching out to
the public with the question, “Do you know
this dumper?”
On May 6, the Columbus Department of
Neighborhoods hosted a virtual Westside
neighborhood update, where Adam Gray
with the division of refuse announced the
new program to curb illegal dumping.
According to Gray, the ‘do you know this
dumper’ campaign started this month and
it shares images of those caught littering
Township officials review single trash hauler plan
Franklin Township are considering the
idea of joining a consortium.
Called the consortium two, the agreement
is being negotiated by the Solid
Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO).
The agreement would bring together several
jurisdictions to have one trash and recycling
contract.
“Some of the communities that would be
involved in the consortium include the village
of Brice, Clinton Township, Madison
Township, Pleasant Township, Sharon
Township and Truro Township,” said Mark
Potts, administrator for Franklin
Township. “We would each have the same
trash and recycling hauler and get a better
deal for residents by negotiating together
on a contract.”
Potts said the township would not have
to agree to recycling with the contract and
could only chose trash collection as part of
the agreement if they would like. He said
the decision to proceed with the agreement
will depend on pricing and will be up to the
trustees.
Currently township residents contract
with their own trash hauler and the township
has no township-wide agreement with
Produce giveaway at YMCA
The Hilltop YMCA hosts a fresh produce
one hauler. Potts said as a result of this,
the township has a lot of illegal dumping.
“The hope is this contract will reduce littering
and this dumping issue in the township,
which we have a huge problem with,”
Potts said. “Having a trash hauler will
really discourage illegal dumping and clean
up the township.”
The township used to have township
wide trash collection with Local Waste
Services, but chose not to renew their
agreement several years ago.
“Everyone would have to be a part of
this program if the trustees approve the
contract,” Potts said. “Also, if residents didn’t
pay, the township could add their bill to
their property taxes, ensuring everyone
pays their bills.”
Potts said if the township adopts the
trash contract, residents would most likely
see lower rates than they are currently
paying. He added that residents may not be
in favor of recycling, but he thinks the
majority will support having a townshipwide
trash contract again.
Currently residents can drop off their
recycling at SWACO drop boxes throughout
the township or can pay for recycling
around the westside
giveaway the third Wednesday of each
month from 4 to 6 p.m. at 2879 Valleyview
ILLEGAL DUMPING
Continued from page 1
on the social media pages for the department
of public services. The hope is that
the public can help identify the offender.
“We want to make sure we are holding
these people accountable,” said Gray.
Gray said he recognizes that illegal
dumping is a big problem on the westside,
particularly in the Hilltop.
“This is our second full year of aggressively
attacking illegal dumping,” said
Gray.
One way the city is tackling the problem
is through its trash collection employees.
“Our route drivers and route supervisors
are always on the lookout for something
amiss,” said Gray.
He said if the drivers see illegal dumping,
they do report it to the city and several
tips from drivers have resulted in investigations.
Another method to address the issue is
the city’s plan to replace the 300-gallon
trash containers with 90-gallon containers.
According to Gray, some areas on the
westside have already made the switch.
Others will see the switch in June or
August. The city will notify residents in
advance via letters with details about the
date and placement areas.
The city of Columbus has placed numerous
cameras in alleyways throughout the
area to catch criminal activity, including
illegal dumping, however some say the
themselves.
Also, at a recent meeting, Potts discussed
the ongoing need for free food services
in the township, including the need to
open a food pantry.
“Before this COVID-19 pandemic,
hunger was a major issue in our community,”
Potts said. “As a result, we will be partnering
with Franklin County Public Health
to offer another food drive in the township.”
The township has one produce drive
that is open once a month on the second
Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Central
Baptist Church.
“This food service will be open later in
the month to continue to help and will also
take place at Central Baptist Church on a
Saturday,” Potts said. “We will help staff
the event and pass out food to those in
need.”
The idea for the additional food drive
came from the Franklin County Public
Health Community Action Team and will
offer fresh produce and staple food for
those in the need. It will be open on the
fourth Saturday of every month from 10
a.m. to noon at Central Baptist Church, on
Frank Road.
Drive in Columbus. For more information,
call the YMCA at 614-276-8224.
cameras do not work well.
“There would have to be thousands of
cameras placed, hundreds of investigators
and dozens of courts to prosecute all the
folks who are dumping,” said Lisa Boggs,
with the South Central Hilltop Block
Watch.
Boggs has been a Hilltop advocate for
many years and sees illegal dumping as
one of the biggest issues on the westside.
She said there needs to be an overhaul of
how trash is picked up.
“They should assign roving trash trucks
to small areas and hold that refuse worker
responsible for keeping that area clean,”
said Boggs.
According to Gray, the division of refuse
works closely with the city attorney’s office
to identify and prosecute those caught
dumping. But he said he needs help from
the public.
“We need you to be our eyes,” said Gray.
Gray asked westside residents to report
illegal dumping to the city’s 311 service
center at https://311.columbus.gov.
Each year, Boggs helps to organize the
South Central Hilltop Cleanup. This year
is the 19th year for the event. It was scheduled
for May 2, but due to the coronavirus
outbreak, the event was postponed until a
later date. Boggs does encourage citizens to
take initiative and pick up trash on their
own.

Community Focus
Prairie pool expected to open
May 17, 2020 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - PAGE 3
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
A local township is optimistic that it will be able to
reopen facilities and continue with some activities as
planned. With the closure of several outdoor community
pools this summer, the Prairie Township
Community Center plans to open its indoor pool.
Michael Pollack, director of the community center,
said one advantage the township has is that its pool
can open anytime of the year as opposed to outdoor
pools that only open for a short period of time.
Communities like Hilliard have closed their pools for
the summer.
“The outdoor pools are only open for three months a
year and if they don’t open at the beginning of their
season, it doesn’t make sense for them to open,” said
Pollack. “Memorial Day is a big day for outdoor community
pools, so if they can’t be open by that date, it
would be hard for them to open later in the season.”
Pollack said the township’s pool doesn’t have this
sense of urgency and can open in late summer or even
the fall because it is inside.
“We don’t have to worry about different seasons;
that is the advantage of having an indoor pool,”
Pollack said. “However, when we do reopen, we may
have to limit how many people can be in the building
or the pool. We may have very limited capacity numbers,
so we will have to figure that out once we get the
OK to reopen.”
The township hopes to reopen the pool when the
community center opens, but officials will have to wait
Be With You
Messenger photo by Dedra Cordle
Three years ago, Duane McVay, a life
group leader at the Columbia Heights
United Methodist Church in Galloway,
established a Star Wars event as a community
outreach project that benefits
both children and adults alike. It was, in
his words, a great success. “I was
impressed by the turnout at each event
we held, as well as the dedication of the
children and adults who came wearing
the outfits of their favorite characters.”
When it came time to organize this
year’s ‘May the Fourth be with You’
event, however, there was some doubt
as to whether it would be safe to hold.
Despite the great disturbance in the
force, McVay and several other members
of the church’s congregation
decided to move forward with their
plans and invited the community to
drive-thru and pick up build-your-own
lightsaber packets and Popfold paper
figures on May 3. Those who came even
got to see the great Obi-Wan Kenobi
(McVay) and Queen Padme Amidala
(Diane Davis) on her throne.
until Ohio Governor Mike DeWine gives them more
direction.
Pollack hopes to start registering students for summer
swim classes in May if they are provided direction
on when they can reopen. However, the center will not
start swim registration until officials know when they
can reopen.
Pollack also gave an update on full-time and parttime
employees working at the community center.
“We still have our five full-time community center
staff working,” Pollack said. “The center is closed and
everyone is working from home.”
Pollack said if you call the community center and
leave a message, the voicemail is sent to staff and they
return all calls from home. However, Pollack said some
maintenance staff and part-time employees are still
working to clean the building.
“We are still waxing, painting, polishing and doing
other much-needed maintenance and deep cleaning,”
Pollack said. “We also are working on landscaping and
other outdoor cleanup. We are being very productive.”
The community center is offering 7 to 8 shifts a
week for part-time employees. These employees are
getting about 12 hours a week. Pollack added that the
part-time staff the township has had to furlough plan
on coming back once the center reopens.
“We aren’t concerned about hiring once the center
reopens, most of our employees are eager and excited
to come back,” Pollack said. “I don’t foresee hiring
being an issue once we reopen as most of our staff voluntarily
were furloughed and were OK with being off
work for a while.”
after all.
With the approval of the state department
of health and the state board of education,
the South-Western City Schools
District announced that graduation ceremonies
would be held but in a manner that
ensures the safety of the students, staff
and community.
It will not look like the traditional ceremonies
of the past where students and
guests are packed into an auditorium, said
district officials, but there will be a ceremony
held at each of the four high schools to
honor individual achievements.
According to Superintendent Dr. Bill
Wise, a drive-thru ceremony will be held on
May 23 with attendance staggered
throughout the day. Students will receive
correspondence from their school this week
regarding their allocated time.
“We anticipate it could take upwards of
five to six hours to get through the number
of graduates and the individual cars,” he
said, referring to the entire ceremony.
Each graduate is permitted to bring one
car with four guests inside. When their
name is called (and if they desire to exit
their vehicles), they will get out and walk
across the raised platform, receive their
diploma covers and have their picture
taken. Those who did not order their caps
and gowns will still be permitted to take
part in the ceremony.
“We know it is not what they envisioned
when we started this school year,” said
Wise, “but we believe this is the best way to
honor their individual achievements while
maintaining protocols to ensure the safety
of everyone involved.”
On the following Saturday (May 30), a
virtual ceremony will be held for each of
the school’s graduating classes in a way
that feels a little more traditional, said
Wise.
There will be prerecorded speakers,
speeches from the valedictorian, salutatorian
and class president, as well as the
singing of the national anthem and the
school’s anthem. There will also be
slideshows representing shared memories
In Education
Financial forecast holds steady despite state cuts
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
South-Western City School officials say
the financial outlook in the district is stable
despite the loss of millions of dollars in
state aid.
At the May 11 board of education meeting,
Treasurer Hugh Garside presented the
five-year forecast, which is a hypothetical
representation of the district’s financial
future based on historical trends and
known facts. He said even with the reduction
in aid, the district will continue to
have a positive cash balance through fiscal
year 2024.
According to Garside, the district
receives 60 percent of its funding through
the state, which recently announced more
than $300 million in cuts to the education
sector in order to balance its budget. Under
the reductions, the district will see a loss of
$3.4 million for the upcoming fiscal year.
He warned that there may be more cuts to
follow but said that will largely depend on
how fast the economy recovers from the
novel coronavirus that closed schools and
businesses for months.
“We are fortunate to be in the (financial
situation) we are right now, but we are not
out of the water yet,” he told the board via
a virtual meeting on Zoom.
He said what has helped offset some of
the loss in state aid is the funding the district
received through the Elementary and
Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds,
which is a component of the Congressionalapproved
Coronavirus Aid, Relief and
Economic Security Act.
“We received $6.4 million which will be
available to spend through the end of fiscal
year 2022,” Garside said.
He added that the ESSERF dollars can
be used broadly, which means the district
can use the funds to shore up budget or revenue
deficiencies should the need arise.
Garside also discussed property tax collection
delinquencies, which are attributed
to the temporary closure of businesses due
to COVID-19, as well as the income tax collection
that was pushed back to July 15.
“I think the collection and distribution
will catch up eventually but the timing and
how and when it happens will be the question,”
he said.
He said the district will be closely monitoring
the economic situation in the state.
In addition to the positive cash balance,
which is projected to be $216.9 million in
fiscal year 2020, $211.4 million in fiscal
year 2021 and $164.6 million in fiscal year
2022, the district is also forecasted to experience
a decline in revenue and an increase
in expenditures.
According to projections, the district’s
revenue will be $286 million, $274.5 million
and $265 million in fiscal years 2020,
2021, and 2022, respectively. The forecast
also projects the district’s expenditures will
be $270 million, $279 million and $302 million
in fiscal years 2020 through 2022.
With the expenditures expected to outpace
the revenue, board member David
Donofrio asked whether the district would
be seeking to place an operating levy on the
ballot in 2023 or 2024.
Garside said asking voters to approve an
operating levy in the future has not been
discussed.
“It doesn’t currently necessitate that,”
he said.
However, he did say that the district
will need to look at areas that could be
“reduced or maintained.”
Drive-thru graduation planned in South-Western
throughout the years.
“We believe that graduation is both an
individual and collective experience,” said
Wise. “With the drive-thru ceremonies, we
are able to honor that individual component
and with our virtual ceremonies we
are able to honor that collective component.”
He said the drive-thru ceremony would
likely not have been realized without the
assistance of student leaders.
When the state order was made in
March to close all school buildings to slow
the spread of a novel coronavirus, it put
senior milestones like prom and graduation
ceremonies in jeopardy. With the slight
relaxation of guidelines last month, the
state department of education allowed for
some ceremonies to take place. Due to the
size of the district, officials and students
knew that it was not likely to happen in the
traditional sense. To ensure that something
could, student leaders at each of the
schools requested a work group be formed
to discuss options on how to safely hold a
graduation ceremony.
“They were incredibly creative with
their brainstorming and receptive to the
information relayed to them by the state
and county health departments,” he said.
“We all have a great appreciation for their
work, their determination and the way
they balanced competing interests without
putting people’s health at risk.”
Relatedly, board of education member
Anthony Caldwell offered praise and
thanks to the student leaders at the May
11 meeting. He said his daughter, who is a
senior at Westland High School, is grateful
for the opportunity to have a public ceremony.
“She could not be more excited about the
work that they have done,” he said.

SPL carefully considers reopening
Southwest Public Libraries (SPL) has
extended closure of its two locations, Grove
City Library and Westland Area Library,
as leaders continue to work out plans for a
safe reopening.
Timing remains dependent on evolving
state and federal guidelines, the results of
a Battelle study investigating the longevity
of COVID-19 on library materials, and
acquisition of appropriate sanitation supplies
and personal protective equipment
(PPE) for the safety of patrons and staff.
Proper protocol for safe handling of
library materials is essential to reopening,
which is why SPL and other central Ohio
libraries are eagerly anticipating the
results of Battelle’s study. The study is the
result of a partnership between Battelle,
the Institute of Museum and Library
Services, and OCLC, a global library cooperative
headquartered in Dublin. The specific
conclusion date of the study is
unknown, but results are not expected for
several weeks. SPL has current plans for a
phased reopening beginning with limited
curbside service. Until libraries know the
results of the study, however, complete
plans cannot be finalized.
“We’re anxious to reopen our doors and
serve our patrons in person again, but we
must do so safely and responsibly,” says
SPL Director Mark Shaw. “Patron and
staff safety remain of great priority.”
Even as SPL prepares for a safe reopening,
the library continues to serve patrons
digitally and expand digital offerings.
Patrons are invited to enjoy new digital
programming including virtual storytimes
and library live chats with staff. WiFi
access hours from library parking lots have
been extended to be available 24/7. Signal
strength cannot be guaranteed; SPL apologizes
for any inconvenience. Digital
resources such as e-books, e-audiobooks,
streaming music and movies, and more are
available at the library’s website swpl.org.
Patrons are encouraged to visit SPL’s
social media and website for the latest
updates and resources.
Book drops remain closed currently, and
hold and due dates have been readjusted.
Patrons are asked to hold on to materials
Governor plans budget cuts
Due to the economic impact of COVID-
19, Governor Mike DeWine announced
$775 million in reductions to Ohio’s
General Revenue Fund for the remainder
of fiscal year 2020 which ends on June 30.
At the end of February and prior to the
onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, state
revenues for the fiscal year were ahead of
estimates by over $200 million. As of the
end of April, Ohio’s revenues were below
the budgeted estimates by $776.9 million.
Because Ohio is mandated to balance its
budget each year, and in addition to identifying
areas of savings, the following budget
reductions will be made for the next two
months:
• Medicaid: $210 million
• K12 Foundation Payment Reduction:
$300 million
• Other Education Budget Line Items:
$55 million
• Higher Education: $110 million
• All Other Agencies: $100 million
“Decisions like these are extremely difficult,
but they are decisions that are part of
my responsibility, as your governor, to
make,” said DeWine. “We believe that
instituting these cuts now will provide the
most stability moving forward, however I
am greatly concerned about the cuts we
must make in education. We have an obligation
to our schools to give them as much
predictability as we can, but if we don’t
make these cuts now, future cuts would be
more dramatic.”
The budget reductions are in addition to
DeWine’s March 23 directive to freeze hiring,
new contracts, pay increases, and promotions
at all state agencies, boards and
commissions.
The new budget reductions will not
apply to critical services available to
Ohioans or COVID-19 pandemic services.
Money to balance the fiscal year 2020
budget will not be drawn from Ohio’s
rainy-day fund.
“I know that I have said that ‘it’s raining,’
but we do not want to tap into the
rainy-day fund yet,” said DeWine. “The
‘rain’ is not a passing spring shower - it
could be a long, cold, lingering storm, and
we should not use the fund until it is necessary.”
Projections by Ohio Office of Budget and
Management Director Kim Murnieks indicate
that the state’s revenues will continue
to be below estimates in the coming
months as Ohio moves through the
COVID-19 crisis. DeWine, Lt. Governor
Husted and Murnieks will continue to
work with the Ohio General Assembly to
identify ways to continue supporting Ohio’s
economy through the COVID-19 crisis.
IRS warns residents to beware of tax scams
The Internal Revenue Service urges taxpayers to be
on the lookout for a surge of calls and email phishing
attempts about the coronavirus. These contacts can
lead to tax-related fraud and identity theft.
Taxpayers should watch not only for emails but text
messages, websites and social media attempts that
request money or personal information. Taxpayers
should not provide their direct deposit or other banking
information for others to input on their behalf into
the secure portal.
The IRS reminds taxpayers that scammers may ask
you to do the following, do not act on these requests.
• Emphasize the words “Stimulus Check” or
As Columbus' leader in durable medical equipment and supplies
“Stimulus Payment.” The official term is economic
impact payment.
• Ask the taxpayer to sign over their economic
impact payment check to them.
• Ask by phone, email, text or social media for verification
of personal and/or banking information saying
that the information is needed to receive or speed
up their economic impact payment.
• Suggest that they can get a tax refund or economic
impact payment faster by working on the taxpayer’s
behalf. This scam could be conducted by social media
or even in person.
Older Americans Month 2020: Make Your Mark
Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s
observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for the 2020 Older
Americans Month is "Make Your Mark."
This theme was selected to encourage and celebrate countless
contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time,
experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day.
Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also
making their marks. This year’s theme highlights the difference
everyone can make – in the lives of older adults, in support of
caregivers, and to strengthen communities.
During this pandemic while we are encouraged to stay at home, here
are some creative ways to “Make Your Mark” in May and all year long:
Volunteer your time. Many large organizations now offer formal online
volunteer programs and opportunities. Here are a few:
• United Nations: The UN runs a virtual program connecting
volunteers to organizations worldwide where they can help
with short and long-term writing and editing, translation,
technology services, research, and advocacy opportunities.
• Red Cross: During times of disaster, the Red Cross utilizes
volunteers to monitor online discussions to find people who need
help, and to share important updates on social media
• Smithsonian Institute: Needs virtual volunteers to help with
transcribing historical documents and updating relevant
Wikipedia pages.
• Nonprofits and advocacy groups need volunteers to share
personal stories of overcoming life struggles that may inspire
others. Check Idealist.org for volunteer listings that may spur your
interest.
Share your story. We can make a mark on people’s lives with the
stories we share. There are so many ways to do this, from telling your
grandkids about your old neighborhood to writing a book. Or, assemble
a photo album of important moments in your life. Stories can be told
over the phone, on the computer, over the backyard fence. They can
be told in letters, in pictures, in headlines and photographs collected
from newspapers. We don’t have to be together to share our stories
and build each other up.
Get involved by inspiring your community. Encourage individuals to
share stories with the people they live with, in writing, in pictures, or by
phone or video call. Make the following ideas your own and promote
them through social media, check-in phone calls, a flyer handed out
with home-delivered meals, or another way you are connected to your
community.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Emergency Home Delivered Meals - Now through July 1st, Franklin
County residents 60 years of age and older can request Senior Options
home delivered meals without income verification. Contact Senior
Options at (614) 525-6200, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is June 15th - The
purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities
around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and
neglect of older persons by raising awareness of its impact on society.
Experts fear the COVID-19 pandemic is putting older adults at risk for
more than just a deadly disease. It is increasing the risk of incidents of
physical, emotional and financial abuse. If you suspect you or someone
you know is a victim of elder abuse in Franklin County contact
Adult Protective Services at (614) 525-4348.

In Entertainment
While the transformation of the kind
but lonely teenager to popular fire-breathing
nightmare has been mined on film and
television before, rarely have they been
infused with as much heart, humor and forgiveness
as “How to Build a Girl.”
This odd combination of rooting for the
protagonist turned antagonist is due in
part to the talent of screenwriter Caitlin
Moran, who adapted the material from her
semiautobiographical novel of the same
name. Using a light but deft hand, she
showcases the gradual change of the lead
character based on hidden traits and situational
awareness of circumstance. It’s a
strange rollercoaster of a film, which is
actually the intention as it is meant to
reflect how one goes about changing their
life during those formative teenage years.
The film is centered on Johanna
Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein), a poor, 16-
year-old girl living in close quarters with
her wannabe rock star father (Paddy
Considine), postpartum depressed mother
(Sarah Solemani) and four brothers of
varying ages. Like most teens, she wants
out of her cramped life and dreams of the
day when she can move to London and
become one of the greatest writers the
world has ever known.
She believes she has achieved this
chance at premature stardom when she is
selected to recite a poem on a local television
show. In her mind, she’ll kill it and be
recognized for her talent, but in reality she
clams up and starts barking in a showcase
of love for her dog Bianca, whom the poem
was based upon. Her mortification is continued
as her peers chase her through the
halls howling, her father’s van is spraypainted
with ‘Scooby-Doo,’ and the family
television is repossessed as she accidentally
let slip their secondary income of breeding
border collies.
To atone for the latter’s grave offense,
her slightly older brother Krissi (Laurie
Kynaston) tells her of an indie rock magazine
that is looking for music reviewers.
Knowing little about rock music, or how to
review the art, she writes up a homage to
the soundtrack ‘Annie’ and sends it in.
Inexplicably, she is granted an interview.
When she arrives at the magazine’s
headquarters, she learns that the all-male
staff only invited her as a lark. Crushed,
she heads out with a pity gift, but then that
streak of determination bubbles up and she
demands to be given an opportunity.
Inexplicably, she is given a chance by
staff writer Tony (Frank Dillane) who says
he’s tired of listening to no-talent artists.
Her first review, set in her point-of-view, is
a semi-hit with readers and she is hired on
a part-time basis.
To fit her new profile as serious music
journalist, she dyes her hair flaming red,
sports a black top hat, black jacket, black
shorts, net stockings and combat boots and
begins calling herself Dolly Wilde.
As her new alter ego, she is confident
and capable, garnering enough money to
get their repossessed television back, purchase
a van without graffiti, and request
features rather than reviews. On her first
feature assignment, she meets budding
star John Kite (Alfie Allen) and falls in love
with him through hours of interviews.
When she turns in her assignment, it is a
Coming of age story embarrassing and entertaining
The Reel Deal - By Dedra Cordle
true puff piece and she is fired for her complete
sincerity. “Our job is to napalm the
(music) parasites,” Tony reminds her.
With the prospect of losing her income
and her dream of becoming a real writer,
she promises to be “better” and transforms
herself into a ruthless destroyer of musical
acts.
While her cleverly written cruelty does
not garner her any fans in the music industry,
it garners her fans of a different kind.
With a standout performance from
Feldstein and a fun cast of secondary characters,
“How to Build a Girl” is a great look
at how one decision can cause a series of
decisions that put you on a path toward
something you never thought you could be.
It is also a great look at allowing someone
to make mistakes and offering them the
space to grow.
With humor, poignancy and heaps of
second-hand embarrassment, “How to
Build a Girl” is altogether a really decent
movie about the difficulties of those
teenage years and how they can shape you
as a person for the better — and worse.
“How to Build a Girl” is rated R and is
available on demand and through the IFC
website. Grade B-
Veterans Hall of Fame seeking applications
The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is
accepting nominations to recognize those
who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and
continue to contribute to our communities,
state, and nation through exceptional acts
of volunteerism, advocacy, professional distinction,
public service, or philanthropy.
Each year, the hall of fame inducts up to
20 former service members based on recommendations
from an executive committee
of veterans from throughout the state
and approval from the governor of Ohio.
To be considered, the veteran must meet
the following criteria:
• Be a past or current Ohio resident
• Have received an honorable discharge
Fame sets the standard for recognizing
Ohio’s veterans for accomplishments
it is a fitting way to say thank you for your
Pet Corner
Pets of the week
Carmella is an 8-
year-old pit bull who
is a true sweetheart.
Mostly she just wants
to be a part of whatever
you’re doing.
She loves to run
around outside and
play fetch. She’s fully
housebroken. Carmella is friendly and affectionate
toward all people and loves attention.
She is reactive toward other dogs, so she
would do best as an only pet. Carmella is
available for adoption through the Franklin
County Dog Shelter.
Princess is an 8-
year-old pit bull mix.
She is always up for
a walk but also
enjoys just hanging
out. She loves soft
blankets, belly rubs,
being as close to her
people as possible
and treats. She
knows sit, shake, and back legs, where she
will sit on just her back legs. Though she loves
people, she does not always get along well
with other dogs. With time and training,
Princess may come around and warm up to
another dog. Adopt her from the Franklin
County Dog Shelter.
FYI: www.franklincountydogs.com
The Franklin County Dog Shelter’s
Community Pet Food Pantry is open and
accessible to residents of Franklin County.
To get food, individuals need to visit the
shelter during regular hours - Monday,
These furry friends are available
for adoption at local
rescues and shelters
Doc Miller was
found injured at the
side of the road in
front of Doctor’s
Hospital - hence his
name. Doc Miller is
blind. This could be
due to trauma from
being hit by a car but
his rescuers are not
sure if that is the
cause. What they do know is that this guy
loves to snuggle and navigates his foster
home very well. He uses his litterbox and can
jump up on the bed and climb steps. Doc
Miller is 6 to 7 years of age. He is available for
adoption through Colony Cats.
FYI: www.colonycats.org
Ramses is a 1-yearold
who loves all the
attention. This sweet
boy deserves a family
who will love and
cherish him. He is
good with other cats
and is eager to find
his forever home. He
is neutered and up to
date on vaccines.
Ramses is up for
adoption through Colony Cats.
FYI: www.colonycats.org
Tuesday, and Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The shelter is located at 4340 Tamarack
Blvd. in Columbus. For more information,
