A collection of DIY crafts to keep the kids busy during the COVID shutdown.

Decorative Cactus Plant

If you are in need of a low maintenance decorative house "plant", this craft is perfect for you!

Supplies:

● river stones in different shapes

(long oval flat ones work out best)

● acrylic paint – different shades of

green, white (can also use Tulip

dimensional paint for spines)

● paintbrush

● pot

● decorative sand (or dirt)

Instructions:

● Wash the rocks to get any dust

and dirt off of them.




Once they are clean and dry,

colour them green. Let the paint

dry completely

Take white acrylic paint and draw

spines. You can draw them in

many different ways – straight

dashed lines, pointing in different

directions, spots… Let it dry

Fill the pot halfway with decorative

sand or dirt. Stick in the painted

rock cactus and add more

decorative sand around them,

filling the pot to the top.

DIY Stress Balls

Supplies:

- Balloons

- Rice or flower

- Sharpies for decoration (optional)

- Funnel

Instructions:

- Use funnel to fill balloon with rice or

flower

- Tie knot in balloon

- Decorate if desired

Tin Can Windsocks

These tin can windsocks are a lovely indoor or outdoor decoration.

Supplies:

- Paint

- Paintbrushes

- tin cans (tip: line the inside rim of

the cans with a layer or two of

masking tape to avoid sharp

edges)

- assorted colourful ribbon and glue

- (Optional embellishments –

stickers, gemstones, sequins, etc.)

Instructions:

1. Have an adult remove the top and

bottom of the can

2. Paint your can however you wish

3. Use glue and a string or ribbon to

make a handle on the top

4. Use glue to secure strings or

ribbons to hang from the bottom

Hang up and enjoy!

DIY Hand Sanitizer

Remember that using soap & water is still preferred by public health officials,

but if you are out, you may need to use hand sanitizer.

Supplies:

Directions:





⅔ cup 99 percent isopropyl

alcohol (rubbing alcohol)

⅓ cup aloe vera gel

Essential oil (optional)

Airtight container

1. To make the sanitizer, start by

mixing the rubbing alcohol and

aloe vera gel.

2. The ingredients should be stirred

until smooth

3. You can add drops of essential oil,

if you’d like to add scent.

4. Transfer the mixture into an airtight

container (you might want to use a

funnel to avoid making a mess)

Stained Glass Waxed Paper

Hang this masterpiece in any window and watch as the colours shine through.

Supplies:

● Crayons

● Cheese grater (or a pencil

sharpener)

● Wax paper

● Iron

● Sharpie markers

Instructions

1. Use a cheese grater to grate

crayons finely (you could also use

a pencil sharpener shavings)

2. Lay out some wax paper

3. Place the shavings into the wax

paper in desired shapes/patterns

4. Place a sheet of wax paper on top,

or fold sheet onto itself

5. Iron the wax paper together

6. Remove the top sheet of wax

paper to reveal your “stained

glass”

Pompom Caterpillars

A cute & easy craft to make some fuzzy friends.

Supplies:

● Pom poms

● Glue

● Clothespins

● Googly eyes

Instructions:

1. Hand out a clothespin to each child

2. Have children glue pompoms onto the

clothespin to create the caterpillar’s body

3. Glue on googly eyes to the head of the

caterpillar

Mosaic Shape Art

This simple mosaic collage is sure to bring a pop of colour into your home

Supplies:

● Black construction paper

● Colour construction paper

● magazines

● Glue sticks

Instructions:

1. Hand out a black piece of

construction paper to each

child

2. Allow them to use the

different coloured paper or

magazine/newspapers to

create many small pieces

of paper

3. With these small pieces,

they can create varies

shapes and designs

4. Challenge them to create

shapes even within the

mosaic!

Toilet Paper Binoculars

If you can find toilet paper, use the rolls to make these colourful binoculars!

Supplies:

● 2 toilet paper rolls or a

kitchen towel roll cut in half

● paint (or coloured paper)

● Glue

● ribbon

● decorative bits and pieces

(stickers, pretty tape, cut

outs)

● clothes pegs (to help it dry)

Instructions:

1. Choose your colours and paint your TP

Rolls. If you don’t want to paint, you can

cover your TP Rolls in coloured paper

2. Glue on your ribbon (or staple it on) and

then add the decorations to each roll

3. Glue your two rolls together – make sure

that the ribbons are at opposite ends
