Editor’s Note

Dear Reader

We staying in Gurgaon have experienced the city to be a melting pot of

various beliefs and ethnicities. The city is like an ocean in its depth which

not just gives space to people from various walks of life to progress but

is bountiful enough to offer the right nourishment to let them grow their

roots and make the place their home. While working on the Cover story

of this issue, we met some amazing Japanese who have made Gurgaon

their home. Some of them from the community are experts in various

Indian dance forms and speak fluent Hindi. They love Indian traditions

and the warmth of the native culture. Let’s showcase A Little Japan

Thriving in Gurgaon.

stories of people who have faced and vanquished the big ‘C.’ When we

hurts.'

A person is judged by the shoes he wears, we have heard it all…so

check out what your favourite style suggests about you as a person and

your habits. If you like customisation then might as well get a pair of

So much is happening in our verbose city- there are corporates,

fashionistas, foodies, samaritans, entrepreneurs and all of them have a

A LITTLE JAPAN

THRIVING IN GURGAON

If there is any culture that comes to mind on being starkly opposite to Indian

culture, it is Japanese! While we gorge on our spicy robust curries, Japanese

delight in their mild, delicate yet flavorsome dishes. Indians are infamous for not

being the best example of punctuality whereas Japanese frown upon someone

arriving late! We as Indians are often loud, boisterous and we are comfortable even

with chaos around us while the Japanese are soft-spoken, always on their best

behavior and meticulously organized! Yet, when hearts connect, differences take the

form of diversity and foreign lands become a home

Today, more than 10,000

Japanese nationals are living

in India and out of them

around 6000 live in

Gurgaon, tells us

KentaroTsutsumi, Director of

Sales, Japanese segment,

Marriott Hotels India Pvt Ltd. “Delhi-

Gurgaon and the number is only increasing

every year. About 40 percent of the

Japanese working in Delhi NCR are staying

with their families,’’ says Kentaro San.

Gurgaon is a preferred destination for this

community with the pbvious reasons- some

of the biggest Japanese multinational

companies like Toshiba, Canon, Honda,

Dentsu, Hitachi, Suzuki, Denso, among

others, have their offices as well as huge

scale operations underway in the city. But

while work brings most of them to the

country, a few are choosing to stay back

and make the Capital and the Millennium

City their home.

The Japanese in Town

Gurgaon has over time emerged to be a

leading destination of choice for foreign

companies as well as foreign nationals. The

city may be grappling with its own

infrastructure issues or high pollution levels,

but at the same time it has a world class

cosmopolitan environment with

international standard of housing,

International schools, multi cuisine food

and of course stellar opportunities for

growth.

“The Japanese community is mostly living

in Gurgaon and the area near Manesar. But

they find places in Delhi better for

shopping and entertainment. The market in

INA is a popular shopping hub to pick up

household daily errands, mainly the food

supply. There are Japanese publications in

the city which give information about the

city and other expat communities help each

other to settle in here,’’says Kentaro.

Kim’s Mart located in Mega Mall in

Gurgaon is yet another popular destination

among the Asian expat community. The

place stocks produce that is integral to the

foreign communities and is visited very

regularly by the Korean and Japanese

nationals living here.

“We have very regular Korean and

Japanese customers and cater to their

requirements the best we can,” says store

manager Parveen Kumar, Manager

Purchase & Accounts. “From noodles,

I find that young

Indian children

and youth are not much

interested in traditional

Indian dances! I hope

they get inspired to

learn more about their

heritage, traditional

culture and art forms as

there is so much to love

about it.”

sauces, meats, seafood to signature

ingredients such as miso, seaweed among

others we mostly source internationallyand

maintain their stock at the store. We have

friendly terms with our patrons and they

share their requirements with us. Japanese

are very true to their word and give

importance to time commitments.”

Japanese Bakes

There are also very popular food bakeries

and restaurants in Gurgaon that offer

authentic flavours of Japan! “We at Iroha

serve 100 percent authentic Japanese

products using original recipes,” says Chef

Sakae Omori of the popular bakery in

Sushant Lok.“We don’t tweak the flavours

as 90 per cent of our customers are

Japanese and they like to eat mildly spicy

food. It’s been five years now that I’ve been

working and living in Gurgaon and I find it

very exciting,” smiles the chef.

Kentaro Tsutsumi.

“Japanese from Delhi NCR also come to

Iroha for their Tokyo style sweets and we

mostly have expats and their families

coming in for their grocery and daily

shopping here in this market,” says Iroha’s

Manager, Robin Sehrawat. “We also have

stocked up on organic vegetables which

are in association with Hasora, another

Japanese brand which deals with fresh and

organic vegetables and we also stock up on

sashimi fish,” adds Sehrawat.

Golf Course Road which is in close

proximity to the bakery is home to many

Japanese living in Gurgaon. The gated

societies are popular among the Japanese

community and offer them the comforts

and facilities at par with international

countries.

Japanese cuisine signature dishes such as

Sushi and Teppanyaki have really caught

the fancy of Indian food lovers who are

increasingly experimenting with this South

Asian cuisine and loving what it has to

offer. Over the past couple of years many

Japanese food establishments have

opened their shutters in Gurgaon and are

doing well serving the connoisseur

community of the city.

Kuuraku restaurant in Global Foyer Mall is

yet another popular destination for this

community. “Japanese cuisine is unique

and we have our style of preparation and

signature ingredients,” says Yosuke Kumai,

Project Manager at the restaurant. “Our

chef is from Japan who cooks authentic

dishes and we don’t tweak the taste at all

as 70 percent of our patrons are Japanese!

Our grilled chicken ‘yakitori’ and Korean

chicken are extremely popular dishes.”

We are told since Japanese are an introvert

and meticulous community, most of

popular standalone Japanese restaurants

and those in the star hotels have a

Japanese chef to cater to the community

guests.

Shimpei Sota, Assistant Manager Plant

Solution Department at Tepco finds

Galleria and Cross Point great places to

hangout, eat and shop. “I have been

coming to Gurgaon very often, and India is

on my regular trip since six years,’’ he says

with a warm grin of joy.

Dia Park Premier is another popular

destination with the Japanese nationals

visiting Gurgaon. The hotel which is in

close vicinity to Huda City Center in Sector

29 hosts a large number of Japanese

guests and have services and facilities

aligned to their taste and culture. The

Japanese restaurants Raifu and Raifu-tei

(private room) are much acclaimed for their

authentic preparations and you can expect

to be served the choicest dishes of the

cuisine which are prepared by Japanese

chefs! They also have two big Japanese

style communal baths for men and women

as well as an Ariake-do Acupuncture

Center offering the Japanese art of

acupuncture and moxibustion therapy.

Moreover the hotel also provides Japanese

concierge services to facilitate easy

communication between the guests and

the hotel staff.

On one hand as expected language poses

a big barrier to let the Japanese and Indian

communities mix up closely, there are some

Japanese here who speak fluent Hindi.

and to overcome this

members.’’

Harsh Vir Taneja

is living with her Japanese husband and her

children in Gurgaon.

Prestige International, formerly known as

Japanese Help Desk helps the Japanese

working class community in availing

medical help and consultation in hospitals

in Gurgaon and Delhi by working as

language mediators between the Japanese

patients and Indian doctors.

“In a month we help almost 200 Japanese

patients with their medical requirements as

almost all our 10 team members know

Japanese, English and Hindi which provides

the perfect link between the doctor and

the patient,” says Managing Director

Takuya Yamakami who has been handling

the Gurgaon operations for last 2 years.

“We have tied up with Fortis, Max

Gurgaon, Dental Roots as well as Sunflower

Family Clinic to take care of all medical and

dental needs of the Japanese community.

We also have tie-ups with insurance

companies and facilitate cashless services

for our patrons.’’

While most Japanese nationals in Gurgaon

are those who have been sent on work

assignments or projects for a brief time

period, a few young Japanese nationals

especially of the age group ranging 20-30

want to continue stayingfor a longer period

in India!

February 2019 | suburb life 11

“I was fascinated with Indian culture and

am also an Odissi dancer,” says Minori

Suzuki who works at Prestige International.

“Before coming to India I had learnt basic

Hindi language and have picked up more

staying here. I enjoy Indian food and living

to work in Gurgaon has been a great

experience which I wish to continue for a

long time. I only wish there was less

pollution and better infrastructure in the

city.”

Art & Cultural Association

Globalization has shrunk the world! While

we have opened our palates to Japanese

cuisine, there are many Japanese women

who have embraced traditional dance

forms of India, and hold your breath, have

become dance gurus too!

Kaori Naka who has been living in Delhi for

the last seven years is working in Gurgaon

is closely associated with the Odyssey

dance for the last 12 years, and today runs

her own dance school Debadhara Yoga &

Odissi in Delhi as well as Japan!

“I was 18 when I first travelled to India and

at 19 I came across this dance form and

was moved by it,” says Kaori. “In 2006 I got

a scholarship from Indian government and

came to Delhi and studied under Guru

Kavita Dwibedi. I had also earlier learnt the

dance form in Japan and Canada. I started

my dance school in Japan and would visit

India often. In 2009 I started mydance

school in Chhatarpur and today most of my

students are Japanese who are living in

Delhi NCR. My family also now lives in

Delhi and this city has grown to become

home,’’ she says with a smile. “I have made

few good Indian friends too especially in

my dance groups. My son is settling down

well here. We have deep fondness for

India’s culture and dances.”

Connect with the community

Gurgaon boasts of a huge number of

groups that comprise of people with similar

interests and passions. While there are

many groups that connect over food or

fashion or fitness, there is also the very

popular group ‘Japan Society of India’ that

was founded in Gurgaon with the intent to

connect both the Japanese and the Indian

community.

“I had gone to Japan in 2015 to study

Japanese language,” says Harsh Vir Taneja,

founder of the society. “They are the nicest

people and I made many Japanese friends

during my stay there. In 2016 on my return I

Jenica Kalra who is a

Japanese language

student and now

even a teacher at

the language

institute Misao in Gurgaon

fell in love with the

Japanese culture and the

community at her friend’s

wedding! “My friend got

married to a Japanese girl

and at their wedding is

where I had my first

introduction to Japanese

community. I loved their

culture and interacting with

the Japanese nationals who

I found very gentle, soft

spoken and well mannered.

I started learning the language a year ago and have reached Level 3. I

have also developed interest in Japanese calligraphy as well as Origami

which is a beautiful Japanese paper art. I wish to visit Japan this year

and now that I know the language I can connect more deeply with the

community, where otherwise language becomes a huge barrier. It is also

great to see so many Japanese people coming down to Rishikesh to

learn Yoga which is a huge fad in Japan and is becoming increasingly

popular among the community!

founded this society with my Japanese

friends here with the aim to connect both

communities and at the same time make

them aware about India and its culture. I

met Japanese people in Japan who had

stayed or worked in India for quite some

time and still didn’t know much about our

country. Japanese people are mostly shy

and many come with stereotype notions in

their mind. But Gurgaon has been a

pleasant shock to many who would not

have expected such a developed city when

they were in Japan,’’ he shares.

The Society does lot of activities with the

Japanese community to keep them

engaged- sushi making, saree draping,

Indian food tasting are some popular

among its members.

With ties growing between these two

iconic Asian countries, we have a lot to look

forward to with the Japanese community.

Under the Tokyo Declaration for Japan-

India Special Strategic and Global

Partnership, Prime Minister Narender Modi

and Prime Minister Abe have set a target of

doubling Japanese FDI and the number of

Japanese firms in India by 2019. As per the

Embassy of Japan in India, there are already

1,229 Japanese firms operating with 4,417

offices in India till October 2015 and Japan’s

Prime Minister has set a target of $33.5

Billion investment into India by 2019. s

G-SETTLER

Not Just

ValeNtiNe’s

Day!

If you read the newspapers like many of us

tend to do, there is no way you can forget

that Valentine’s Day is round the corner! No

way! Romantic dinners within a thousand

bucks, lovey-dovey cards, cakes to order,

heart-shaped balloons, twin solitaire rings,

matching humungously expensive watches,

spa treatments and more…

Arthy Muthanna Singh

Can be pretty tensionpacked,

right? And, what

pressure! What if she

does not like the gift?

What if she thinks you’re

a cheapo? What if the

dress does not fit? What

if he thinks that the bracelet is too bling?

What if, what if…?

But for me, the pressures are totally

different. Whenever the month of February

begins, I always remember two dates –

February 14 and February 29. Don’t get

me wrong, I am not thinking of these two

days only because of Valentine’s Day and

because a year with February 29th in it

means it is a Leap year. Far from it. Maybe

when I was a lot younger, more naïve and

romantic, but not now. Now I remember

these dates because of two special

birthdays. One on Feb 14 and one on Feb

29.

While everyone else is talking about

where, oh where they will they take their

loved one out for a special date, I am

making sure that I do not forget these

important dates. Feb 29 is the easier date-

- first of all it comes only once in four

years, making that year a Leap year.

Secondly, this friend lives in Houston,

which helps. There is little chance that he

will wallop me when if I forget his birthday,

even though it does arrives only once in

four years! But the February 14 birthday is

the one I really cannot afford to forget.

This friend lives here and I have actually

forgotten her birthday once, so….! This is a

matter of being left-out-of-the-will

importance. The year I did forget (no

excuse, except that my memory is like a

sieve!), she called me at 11 pm and

demanded an extra-special birthday

present. Fair enough.

Which brings me to FOMO. My friend/ s

keep reminding me that if I was on

Facebook there was no way I’d be allowed

to forget anyone’s birthday, anniversary,

book launch, art opening, etc. In fact, I am

not on social media at all. A bit of a

dinosaur on that front. No Insta, no Twitter,

no Facebook. No Fear Of Missing Out, I’m

asked? No, not really. Quite a relief,

actually. I can barely keep up with I need to

keep with. I’d probably collapse if there

was even more to keep up with. Maybe I’d

never forget important dates ever again,

maybe I’d receive more birthday wishes or

even Valentine wishes! But for now, maybe

just a dozen real red roses will do? s

WELLNESS

CELEBRATE

WOMANHOOD

EACH DAY WITH

GOOD HEALTH

‘Eating right goes a long way for women,’

has been an old adage heard from

generations and it still holds right…

Meera Oberoi

Healthy diet and nutrition

are of utmost importance

to women, given their

bodies undergo many

hormonal changes during

puberty, pregnancy and

menopause. A balanced

diet provides enough support at all the

stages. It helps to tackle Pre Menstrual

Syndrome (PMS), boosts fertility, fights

stress, makes pregnancy smoother, and

eases symptoms of menopause.

Healthy living habits for women:

Never miss your meal: Follow the essential

three times a day meal and try to munch

something healthy in between like a fruit or

a salad. The outcome of a combination of

balanced diet and exercise is lustrous hair,

glowing skin and perfect shape.

Complex carbohydrate and fibre intake:

Meals having complex carbohydrates rich in

Omega

3 fatty acids are

known to reduce heart

risk factors, stress and

depression, so consumption

of flaxseeds, unsalted

pistachios, walnuts,

almonds, salmon and

tuna is advisable.

fibre

are a

good

source of energy

supply as they get absorbed slowly. Pasta,

rice, whole grain bread, beans, fruits, and

veggies are a great source of complex

carbohydrates which are also high on fibre

content.

Consume essential amount of fats: Don’t

go on fat-free or ‘low fat’ diet completely.

Low-fat foods are replaced with starch,

which is nothing but another form of sugar.

It is imperative that you read the label

properly before falling for the fad of low-fat

food.

Health Guide

Never miss meals,

especially breakfast

Eat fruits, healthy items

between meals

Beware of excessive

protein

Drink ample amount of

water

Exercise regularly

Avoid excess of sugar

intake

Reduce stress

Avoid excess of sugar intake: Too much of

sugary food lead to bloating and makes

one feel lethargic. It is also one of the

reasons behind blemishes and acne on

face.

Take enough calcium and iron: The risk of

osteoporosis being higher in women, they

need to consume enough calcium for good

bone health. Beans, broccoli, kale, brussels

sprouts, and collard greens are the perfect

source for plant-based calcium. For iron

content, intake of lean red meat, dark

poultry, lentils, spinach, iron-fortified

cereals and almonds is advisable.

Beware of excessive protein: Too much of

animal-based protein for women can cause

harm as it leads to loss of calcium and

decreases bone density. It is advisable that

women opt for fish, skinless chicken, lowfat

dairy, and plant-based protein sources,

such as beans, nuts, seeds, peas, tofu, and

soy products rather than red meat and

processed meat.

Reduce stress: Changing your lifestyle

reduces your stress. Take an adequate

sleep of 7-8 hours at least. Lavender,

chamomile tea, tulsi, mulethi are some of

the herbs that help get rid of stress.

Quit smoking and cut down on alcohol:

Eating foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus

fruits, capsicum, amla help in decreasing

the urge to smoke. Keep your mouth busy

with the help of a sugar-free candy.

Decrease your cravings to smoke by

smelling on some dried fruits. Avoid alcohol

and caffeine.

“I ANNIHILATED

THE BIG ‘C’ FROM

MY LIFE’’

It was November 2017, I felt a lump in my

left breast. I knew, what it could mean!

Nisha Agarwal

My gynaecologist wasn’t available

for the next whole week thus took

an appointment with another lady

doctor and while she was

examining me she blurted out that

there was something not right and

I was referred to a radiologist. The

journey began…The images and scans were a matter of

concern certainly, so it was recommended that I see a

surgeon for a biopsy at the earliest.

Then it was a marathon to look for a good surgeon.

Finally, I reached to Dr Rohan Khandelwal who

performed a needle-guided biopsy on me. I was lucky to

have got everything to have fallen in place and start the

treatment unlike many others wherein much time is

wasted looking for the right people and diagnosis.

After the biopsy I had to wait for seven days for the

reports to come and hell broke loose when it was

confirmed that the lump was malignant.

Hell Broke lose

How much I wished that the reports were wrong and so

16

on, but the confirmation had come. I felt

my world spinning. I barely remember the

rest of my meeting with the doctor. I was

shocked, at the diagnosis and what was

more shocking was that we had no family

history of the disease.

Even if I wanted I knew there was no point

staying in denial; it was time to face it and

fight it out. The diagnosis had hit me hard.

Within the next four days, I had a

lumpectomy and reconstructive surgery the

following January, chemotherapy started

then radiation therapy six months later.

With the impact of therapies, I started to

lose hair dramatically and being a woman it

wasn’t easy for me to bear this. One fine

day, I went to the salon and got my head

shaved. Never wore a wig or covered my

head as people do normally.

Presently I have to take tamoxifen every

day and for the next 10 years. I am on

monthly injectable medicines which have

caused artificial menopause to me. Now my

scars have become my identity; I consider

them as my winning trophy which I earned

by enduring the pain.

My Support System

During this journey, my younger brother

provided me with a tremendous amount of

emotional support and helped me through

medical appointments and treatments.

I believe cancer changed me as a person. I

have become more sensitive and

compassionate. I knew I would need all my

strength to vanquish my illness. I worked on

myself to keep myself in a positive state of

mind. To lift my vibrations, I listened to

discourses of Aadi Yogi, chants and which

helped me to keep my sanity. Otherwise, it

was extremely difficult to handle this 'C'

monster and the other monster called

HUSBAND.

Life thereafter

In most cases, once the treatment is over,

cancer survivors cope with their new life in

different ways. While some prefer to put

their experiences behind them, others

choose to draw on them and get involved

with cancer-related activities. I do not

intend to restrict myself but certainly, give

back to society.

I don’t call it cancer I say, I CAN CERVIVE

(survive) once you survive cancer, you are

strong enough to face literally anything. s

The writer of the article is a cancer

survivor, a designer and a Gurgaon

resident who has put her journey of trials

& triumphs in words for many out there

to get inspired… ‘ it is possible to push

back and rout the scary ‘C’.

HEALTH

Vanquishing the ‘C’

Factor

Taking your body tell-tale signs seriously is far better than fighting it when it takes

you over. On the World Cancer Day 2019, here are stories of battle & triumphs…

Uttara J Malhotra

Intermittent

fasting reduces free

radical damage,

regulates inflammatory

conditions in the body and

starves off cancer cell

formation.

The silent killer has invaded

into the lives of the rich and

poor. It makes no

distinctions and the survival

rate has become difficult.

Welcome to the world of

diseases like Cancer, that

has become the biggest lifestyle disease of

modern times.

Anandita Dasgupta (name changed) was

living a happy life with her grown-up

children when she suddenly started

developing pain in her chest. She thought it

to be nothing alarming but probably simple

hormonal change. But a chance checkup

left her dumbfounded and the rounds of

chemotherapy started thereafter. She had

multiple malignant growths in her breast.

The only prayer she had was, “I didn’t want

to lose my breast.” The trauma of physical

incapacity (or feeling so) was far more for

Anandita to handle than anything else.

Doctors couldn’t save her left breast and

she uses silicone exterior implants which

are the creation of modern-day medical

challenges.

Why Does It Happen?

Dr Tejinder Kataria, Chairperson Radiation

Oncology, Cancer Institute Medanta, The

Medicity constantly sees cases of cancer on

the rises both in men and women, not

barring children either. He shares, that

“currently, 60 per cent of cancer occurs due

to lifestyle choices. The rest can be blamed

18

on the use of tobacco, alcohol and or due

to viral infections like hepatitis B and

human papillomavirus.”

“Cancer is caused by a complex interplay

between the genes, environment and

lifestyle factors. Another reason why cancer

is being seen so often is also that of better

diagnostic modalities which are able to pick

up this disease more frequently than

before,” informs, Dr Seema Singh,

Consultant- Surgical Oncology.

Doctors believe that in the past, cancer has

existed but patients succumb to it in a

smaller proportion and could live with

lingering cancer within the body. The life

expectancy and widespread attack

internally have increased.

The ‘C’ factor wrapped its fangs across the

celebrity actors like Monisha Koirala, Sonali

Bendre, Irfan Khan, taking all of them by

big shock. Talking to people recently at

Jaipur Literature Festival, Manisha Koirala

who was there to promote her book

‘Healed, a chronicle of her battle against

cancer said " To treat and defeat the

disease go to a medical expert and to

further maintain good health I suggest that

people should meditate, exercise every day

and follow the path of naturopathy.''

Intermittent fasting boosts your immune

system.’’ Her battle with the disease and

her life after that has made her more

compassionate, soft and ‘I am more kind to

myself.’ Her book takes the readers on an

emotional roller-coaster ride through her

many fears and struggles and shows how

she eventually came out triumphant.

Life Afterwards

The one thing which adversely does get

affected is the reproduction system,

especially in women. According to Dr

Sweta Gupta, Senior Consultant for Fertility

Solutions “With timely medical

interventions, survival rates have increased

but cancer treatment does lower people’s

ability to father or mother a child.

Treatments like surgery, chemotherapy or

radiotherapy can decrease ovarian

reserve or sperms. With timely counselling

and intervention individuals battling cancer

can get an opportunity to preserve their

fertility while they undergo treatment for

the above conditions.”

For men “the option of sperm banking and

for females, egg freezing are standard

options which are usually available at

fertility centres which can be considered

before planning treatment.

Win the war

Doctors recommend some serious changes

in lifestyle. “Because this is essentially more

of lifestyle disease, some simple changes in

our daily eating habits can make a huge

difference to the way our body fights

Cancer from with in,” suggests Dr J.B.

Sharma, Senior Consultant, Medical

Oncology.

Nuts, seeds, garlic, pomegranate, berries,

oranges, turmeric, spinach, ginger are

known to have anti-cancerous properties.

Avoid eating cured, dried and preserved

meats and other foodstuff suggest Dr

Geeta Kadayaprath (Director – Surgical

Oncology), at Delhi- NCR’s leading

hospital. s

Add walnuts, apples. Blueberries broccoli,

carrots, cherries, garlic, flaxseed to your

diet. Eat right every day!

DENTAL CARE

TODDLER’S

DENTAL HEALTH

Young children are more prone to tooth decay

and other tooth related problems. Hence it

becomes imperative to take an extra bit of

care for the toddlers. “Better care, lesser are

chances of tooth decay in a child,” discusses

Dr Heman Verma from Dental Stylers

Even milk teeth in

children need

good care, even

though they are

temporary. Oral

care is necessary

at each stage of

life, from infancy to the old age.

Read on to find out the best

way to manage oral health in

infants.

Fussy Infants

Babies are born with their

teeth, but they are hidden

under their gums. They only

begin to erupt after attaining

six months of age. It is

advisable to get in the habit of

cleaning your baby’s gums, with

a clean and damp cloth, soon

after birth. However this may

be a little fussy in the

beginning, but it will be good

for the long run. The teething

process in a kid can be very

painful. From six months of age

to six years, a child fully

develops

milk teeth

and also

starts

losing

them until

11 years of

age. Here

onwards,

permanent

teeth begin to appear. If

proper care is not provided

during the teething process,

then the permanent set of

teeth can be easily decayed.

Preventing Decay

Ignorance on part of parents

sometimes leads to dental

problems in young children. A

quick guide to what not to do if

you have an infant at home:

Baby bottles can cause severe

damage to your child’s teeth.

Avoid giving milk or fruit juices

to your child in a bottle while

putting him to sleep; because

Recent

study of British

Medical Journal reveals that

secondhand smoke may

contribute to an increased risk of

tooth decay in infants, along with

other oral problems like bad

breath and gums.

the

sugary

liquids

from these drinks pool around

the teeth for long periods of

time, leading to cavities in the

upper and lower front teeth.

However, if your child needs a

bottle to fall asleep, then

substitute it with water.

If your child uses a pacifier, do

not dip it in honey or any sweet

substance before giving it to

your baby.

You need to be

gentle with

your baby’s

teeth and

gums. Use a

soft-bristled

baby

toothbrush or

finger brush when

cleaning your baby’s

new teeth.

Do not introduce toothbrush

until the age of two.

Your child’s healthy teeth are in

your hands, clean them well

before and after every feed. s

Rustic The

Way It Is…

Rustic and Earthy are a twin combination that

is much in vogue nowadays. We talk to

experts on how to make your living space look

warm and welcoming

Anuradha Ramamirtham

The Spring Summers are at

the doorstep and everything

earthy is soothing and

welcome now. This season

sees people extending the

outside world in their homes

by adapting the rustic looks.

And why so, you may ask? Because it is a

mirror image of what one experiences

outside in the countryside the woods and

who doesn’t want to get that piece of

experience back home?

Highlighting the raw elements of nature,

rustic interiors includes wood and stone.

These elements make you connected to the

past and remind you of a time that was

unpretentious. “Young professionals today

are looking to find a balance between the

ongoing trends and comforting spaces.

With rustic décor, you get the best of both

worlds! Gurgaon has a relatively high

number of

High Net

worth

Individuals

(HNIs), who

own their

own homes

and properties.

Additionally, these

individuals are well-travelled and are aware

of the international trends which works well

for us. With a high disposable income, the

people in Gurgaon are more than happy to

experiment with new trends and designs,”

says Parul Mittal, Director, Greenlam

Industries Ltd.

How can you go for a Rustic

Décor?

While the traditional rustic style would not

work in the 21st century, contemporary

rustic style has surfaced which is more

22

suburb life | February 2019

adaptable, making you feel light and

refreshed. We bring ways on how you

could also get a rustic décor designed

and enjoy Mother Nature.

Wooden Flooring: Whenever you

think of nature, wood is the first

element that one remembers.

Wooden flooring is a key

component of gong rustic and is

responsible for enhancing the

beauty of other features used in

the theme. “While a light tanned

shade would give your house a

homely vibe, dark hues will

accompany and enhance the beauty of

your current décor,” says Mittal.

While

a light tanned

shade would give your

house a homely vibe,

dark hues will accompany

and enhance the beauty

of your current

décor.

Use of Natural Accessories as Décor:

While having decided to go with the

theme, its best that natural things are used

to accessorise the décor. “Using cane

furniture or nice teak furniture is a big yes.

Elements like lamp shades made of willow

or cane, wind chimes made of wood,

terracotta pottery and artefacts and huge

brass photo frames or mirrors elude a very

vintage and earthly look,” says Tarasha

Khan, Founder, Taksh Designs. She adds

that another simple piece of décor that

turned into a marvel was simply painting a

small branch of a tree which had fallen of

and then completely wrapping it with LED

lights. It was an experiment which struck

the right cord and orders for such lamps

are always on.

Apart from wood and wood alike products,

one could also use seashells to make a

variety of decorations such as a glass jar

with seashells, a picture frame or a candle

holder.

Rustic Facades: Increased awareness of

texture is coming to the forefront in the

cladding

space. “There are clads come in

wood finish, stone finish and

solid colours. These facades will

provide an elegant and rugged

look to your exteriors. Along

with being graceful, these

exterior clads withstand years

of use without any wear and

tear of the product,” says

Mittal.

Textures: Classy textures have a

tactile element to them and

never fail to create an authentic

and rich look to your interiors.

“Finishes such as suede, gloss,

stone, raw silk, chased wood,

sparkle and look breath-taking

without being heavy on your

pockets,” says Mittal.

Finally, it’s a good idea to take

the help of experts while doing

up the house. “They are the

best people to know the what quality suits

best- besides looks and durability, it also

has to work well the environment in that

particular which these experts are well

aware of,” concludes Khan. s

Handlooms of IndIa: a

BIg YEs In tHE fasHIon

scEnE

Indian Handloomsare definitely a major hit this summer and always as they are a

powerful combination of comfort and style along with a rich dose of Indianness.

Anuradha Ramamirtham

Indian handlooms are precious as they

are pure, offer exclusive one-of-a-kind

designs that represent the various

culture and traditions prevalent in

India and made to suit the different

climates in the country. We have been

known for showing superior quality

craftsmanship in the handloom products

unmatched across the world with the

intricate threadwork, embroidery, gold and

silver workings, paintings etc., painstakingly

and delicately worked on to produce a

masterpiece. Beaming ‘Kanta work’,

beautiful ‘Phulkari’, the breathtaking

‘Madhubani and Warli’paintings, the

‘Mekhala Chadar’ all blend like cheese and

wine in any kind of outfit – even the

western ones that are a global sensation.

And while being attractive, they help India

Inc as they promote green production and

provide huge employment in both rural and

urban India.

Even with so many positives,Handlooms

were slowly fading from the fashion and

retail scene, affecting the livelihood of a lot

of craftsmen.

Thankfully, like a phoenix, handlooms have

risen and revived at almost double the

speed in the last seven to eight years.

Today, they are so much in vogue that they

are embraced in all kinds of dresses- for

men, women and kids. Right from Kurtas,

Sarees, Dresses, Gowns to kids wear, and

more.

Renaissance of the Indian

Handlooms

The ‘slow fashion’ and ‘eco-friendly’

movements worldwide have made an

26

suburb life | February 2019

impact on the rise in demand for handloom

textiles in the Indian and International

markets. “Firstly, it is eco-friendly and it

doesn’t have any kind of harmful effect on

the skin. This has forced people to come

back to handlooms. Secondly, in a country

like India, which has a tropical hot climate,

it is extremely comfortable to wear

handlooms- something like Linen, which is

easy to maintain and breathable,” says

Dola Mukherjee, a Handloom Enthusiast

who works with the weavers. Also, people

have come back to Handlooms because of

the trendy, attractive and unique designs

that designers are working on in tandem

with the weavers directly. And last but not

the least, celebrities have had their hand in

getting Indian Handlooms back in track.

“Deepika Padukone wore a Kanjeevaram

saree for her marriage.. It was always

thought that Kanjeevaram sarees are very

heavy silk and uncomfortable to wear in the

summers, but with the new kind of

designing and weaving patterns, they are

light weight and easy to wear. Vidya Balan,

Nandita Das, Rekha are other actresses

who actively promote Indian Handlooms by

wearing them often,” adds Mukherjee.

“Breaking the stereotype, handlooms have

entered the western world too. We can see

how prominent designers are using Indian

handloom textiles and designs more

frequently in their collections showcased at

fashion shows all over the world,” says

Jawahara Singh, Co-founder of

Avishya.com.

Experts also believe that resurgence of

pride in Indian art, culture and traditions

both in India and the Indian diaspora

abroad have helped in handlooms getting

a revival again. “People have become more

aware and are proud of ‘Indian’ textiles and

there has also been a boost in the segment

from the current Government. Making the

weavers inclusive and a part of the whole

design process gives us joy and makes the

end product more interesting,” says Yuti

Edward, Founder, Udd.

Gurgaon for Handlooms

Gurgaon the market is opening up and

people are showing interest for handloom

sarees and apparels which was not there

initially. “I remember 2004-2007, I used to

find only synthetics. Slowly handlooms are

coming up now. And, if you see the

corporate level- the midlevel who are in

their 30s- they are preferring beautiful

handloom sarees,’’ says Mukherjee.

Gurgaon’s unique combination of being a

home to a large number of educated,

upscale residents, “In general, women from

this area have a good taste for handlooms

and like to explore a variety of handloom

apparel and designs,” says Singh.

Fashionable Handlooms that will

dominate this summer

With summer coming up cotton and silk

cotton varieties are bound to be in

demand. “We are lining up a whole new

range of fitted garments like kurtas,

Anarkalis, salwars and light n easy saree

varities for summer,” says Singh. Some of

the options to pick up includeBandhini,

Ikats, Chikankari, Mangalgiri, Narayanpet,

Kanchi Cotton and Kota Doria. s

NEW IN TOWN

A NEW DESTINATION

FOR WALK-IN CLOSETS

Walk-in closets the new style quotient in new homes

Spread in the area of 2000-sqfeet,

kitchens and in-wall storage

units. The brain child of the

founders & designers

Sourabh and Gaurav Papneja,

the brand takes pride and delight in not

just designing great storage options for the

fastidious customers but also customize the

same as per the client’s requirement.

“Our customers patronize us for our

supreme quality of product, and timeless

design,” says Sourabh Papneja. Adding to

this Gaurav shares, “Besides offering

premium quality modular solutions, we also

happen to be a cost sensitive brand for

those who are seeking affordable modular

cabinets or fittings, but not willing to

compromise of aesthetics in the bargain.’’

Here the duo shares some tips to help you

optimize every square inch of your closet

with purposeful storage solutions-

• Calculate the numbers

Take an inventory of your belongings in the

closet. These calculations will help dictate

how much space you'll need for hanging,

shelving and accessories.

• Prioritize space for dresses or

longer hanging clothes.

Design for a long hang section first and

then place drawers and shelves after. Make

all remaining space double hang in order to

maximize vertical space. Long hang for the

average woman should take up anywhere

from 18-24" of hanging space on average.

• Consider seasonal storage when

designing.

If you are pressed for space, rotate your

seasonal clothing (spring/summer and

fall/winter) from the master closet into a

secondary closet or storage space. Baskets

and bins will work wonders when keeping

seasonal items organized and out of the

way.

• Design with extra shoe storage

in mind.

The average woman has 40 pairs of shoes

compared to the men's average of 10 pairs.

Design for ample shoe storage and allow

room to grow. More shoes can fit on a flat

shelf and they are best stored heel to toe

for maximum space functionality.

• Use functional accessories

Accessories’ main function is to organize

your items. Secondly, they offer a design

aesthetic that can highlight the room.

Drawer and shelf dividers, Multiple hanging

racks, Slat wall for hanging ties, belts, and

accessories, Jewelry drawer divider are

some options to consider.

• Right lighting

LED lighting dramatically enhances your

home, while keeping energy costs low.

From spotlights over display shelves to a

lighted shoe closet, lighting can transform a

spacious closet into a personal boutique. s

JAMGARH Jams at The City CLUB 4

Jamgarh, a collaborative concert tour was more like a two-hour

long music festival at The City Club 4. The music fest was a

potpourri of music, dance & poetry curated by Terra Rosa

Gypsies along with Rock & Blues legend Bernie Marsden;

Spanish Flamenco by Las Tablas; poetry by Bollywood lyricist &

poet, Shellee. Performances by the danseuse from Colombia Jivna

Nataly, who specialises in Latin Rhythms, Flamenco, Chinese Sleeves

Chau left the members elated. The audience enjoyed the fest of the

spectacular variety.

The show started with some powerful Sufi numbers sung by Vineet

Sharma, the lead vocalist and founder of Terra Rosa Gypsies. The band

played its original rock –Sufi numbers, a fusion that of a music mystique.

The second in the row to take the crowd by excitement was the elegant

flamingo performance of Las Tablas from Spain Madrid which included

Cana, Farrucsand Taranto.

G-etc.

Shelle the Manmarziya and Udta Punjab fame Bollywood poet

fascinated the crowd with his poems.

And Finally, the legendary Rock Star Bernie Marsden, who was the lead

guitarist and singer of the iconic band Whitesnake rocked the Stage

with his Multi-Million Selling Chart topper song "Here I Go Again" and

Other hits from his Albums. All in all, Jamgarh was a feast for music

lovers.

Jamgarh started three years ago as a private congressional of musicians

in the sylvan surrounds of a beautiful resort in Ramgarh, Uttarakhand

(‘Levitate @ Ramgarh’) with the clear objective of providing a quiet,

inspiring space for artists to gather, share talents & influences,

collaborate and create new music, a space far away from the word of

endless formatted gigs and creative shackles. Word quickly spread

amongst discerning lovers of independent music and in July 2018, the

Jamgarh Music Festival took shape – a three day finely curated event

with over 15 versatile artists and a small passionate gathering of 250

CARELESS WHIISPERS

WATCH OUT,

YOU ARE UNDER

SURVEILLANCE!

In the era of social media, where everything you do instantly

finds a way to your social media handles and accounts, ever

thought if these feeds stay within your private network?

SUBURB gives you an insight…

Social media is a tricky affair.

Facebook, Whatsapp,

Instagram and Twitter have

become an integral part of

our lives. Some social media

addicts post pictures of their

everyday activities like office

work, domestic activities, social outings,

food, fights and more. While posting how

many really know or realize who are real

‘audience’ to this content or how can this

data or pictures can be morphed! Even

though the apps and websites like

Facebook have their own ‘privacy policies,’

yet there are many loopholes that leak your

private moments to unknown people.

The Unknown Audience!

It’s a trend to showcase your daily life to

the world on social

media platforms- parties,

new dresses, solitaires,

holidays, children and

more. If you are not

actively engaged on

snap chat, telling a story,

you may not be

considered updated. More

like popular Instagrams and

the number of followers on

your twitter account and likes of

these podiums decide your popularity

in the social circle you move. Age no bar,

school kids as well as adults of all ages

seem to be making headway on exposing

their lives through this network. Yes, it is no

more considered awkward to upload a

selfie of your first kiss!

Don't

keep your nose

stuck in your

phone; keep your

eyes open to see the

real world around

you.

However,

despite the

privacy

settings set

on ‘only

friends’ on

FB, it

doesn’t

guarantee that

your posts will

only be restricted

to your friend list only.

Your friends can share your

posts and status updates on

their timelines, thus giving

access to their friends to your

profile. GeetikaChadda recalls, “I

had this creepy stranger who

would follow me on every possible

social media site, be it Twitter or Facebook.

He somehow got access to my phone

number and would continuously message

me. After changing my number twice, I

realised that he ends up tracing my number

because it was linked to my Facebook

account. It still freaks me out.”

Causing Breakups

People fall in and out of love way too often

nowadays. There is no hesitation in posting

personal romantic pictures on these

networking sites. Stay aware that when a

relationship becomes a thing of past, then

these pictures may haunt your current

relationship status. Social media has

become the best place to stalk your

potential or current partner and find out

about their past relationships. There have

been many surveys that state that divorce

due to social media has increased sharply.

Twitter and FB accounts getting hacked is

not uncommon either.

“I broke up with my boyfriend when I found

out through his WhatsApp pictures that he

was busy partying with his colleagues, while

he didn’t talk me for months. He had told

me that he had some troubles at his

workplace and won’t talk more than ten

minutes in a day, but his WhatsApp told a

different story and so I called it off,” says

Sophia Rohtagi.

Watchdog!

Government agencies also closely watch

cybercrime is tracked and startling

revelations made of links with the antisocial

elements and people pinned down.

Don’t get surprised your phone calls, text

messages among other things can also be

tracked, including your location via your

phone. However, tech expert Nishant

Dubey explains that while you can’t really

stop your moments from reaching out to

unwanted people, you can at least be sure

that the personal information collected by

your smartphone or social media is actually

captured in encrypted form and cannot be

read by anyone, even at times tech guy fail

to decode the encryption.

More so there are CCTV cameras installed

at all public places including roads, malls,

shops and more. You are under surveillance,

watch out! s

Three Classic Films

by Gulzar Aandhi, Angoor and Ijaazat

Publisher: Harper Collins India

Three Classic Films by Gulzar provides

insights into the making of three of Gulzar's

films: Aandhi, Angoor andIjaazat. While for

Aandhi, author Saba M. Bashir does a close

textual analysis of the film, examining in

detail its stellar cast, the language and

dialogues, and the evergreen songs, for

Angoor, Sathya Saran traces the evolution

of a comic tale which was an adaptation of

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors. In the

third, Mira Hashmi highlights how Gulzar's

skill as a storyteller is exemplified by his

complex characters in the film and how it

benefitted immensely from R.D. Burman’s poignant musical score. All

three draw on Gulzar's own and some of the actors’ memories from

during the making of these films.

In

My Heart

by Nandana Dev Sen, Publishers: Puffin

In My Heart isauthored by award-winning

actor, writer and child-rights activist—

Nandana Dev Sen. Beautifully imagined,

sensitively told and accompanied with

gorgeous illustrations, In My Heart is one

of the first books that talk about adoption

in India. It explores a warmly inclusive

concept of family and encourages all

children to celebrate the unique ways in

which different families are born and is

perfect for being read aloud with family.

Nandana says, “We all know that adoption is a critical topic in India,

where we have countless disenfranchised children whose lives could

be transformed by loving homes. Yet adoption is rarely discussed in

mainstream media or in Indian popular culture; consequently, there

is, I feel, a pervasive if unspoken stigma (and fear of bullying)

attached to adoption here still. In India we don't yet have enough

books that adoptive families can directly relate to, and could then

use as a tool to discuss their precious and unique family identities. I

consciously wrote this book for ALL kids, with the goal of widening

their understanding of and regard for how different kinds of families

come together through love.”

Kaifiyat translated

by Rakhshanda Jalil, Publisher: Penguin

Translated by RakhshandaJalil, Kaifiyat

is a is a stunning new translation of

KaifiAzmi’s most exquisite poems that

also contain insightful trivia about his

life and legacy

Kaifi Azmi’s poetic temperament—

ranging from timeless lyrics in films

like KagazKePhool to soaring

revolutionary verses that denounced

tyranny—seamlessly combined the

radical and the progressive with the lyrical and the romantic.

Love and romance, in fact, run like warp through the woof of

politics and protest in Kaifi ’s poetry. This beautifully curated

volume brings together poems and lyrics that reflect Kaifi ’s

views on women and romance—from sweetly lyrical odes like

‘The First Greeting’ to the powerful, anthem-like ‘Woman’; from

the haunting ‘Regret’ to the mercurial ‘She of the Many Faces’.

These stunning verses conjure a dynamic portrait of womanhood

as seen through the eyes of an exquisitely gifted poet.

The 108 Upanishads: An Introduction

by Roshen Dalal, Publisher: Penguin

A seamless blend of fable and

is perhaps the most revered text

in the Vaishnava tradition. It

brings to life the legends of gods,

Asuras, sages and kings—all the

while articulating the crucial

ethical and philosophical tenets

that underpin Hindu spiritualism.

The narrative unfolds through a

series of conversations and

interconnected stories. We are

told how the sage Vyasa was

inspired by Narada to compose

the Bhagavata Purana as a means

to illumine the path to a spiritual life. We learn of the devotion of

Prahlada, the austerity of Dhruva and the blinding conceit of

Love is in the air

The fact that Valentine’s Day is now celebrated across the globe, making it the

Saint Valentine, in defiance of

this decree, continued to get

young lovers married in secret.

Eventually his actions became

known to the emperor and the

Saint was put to death on 14th

of February.

I have often heard people say

that you shouldn’t fall in love

with the organisation that you

work for, for the organisation is

not capable of loving you back.

It won’t blink an eyelid if there

suburb life | February 2019

is a need for it to let you go.

But isn’t that true for every

other human relationship?

When the need to end a

relationship arises, how many

bonds are brittle enough to

endure it? The question is, what

can we do to make our

relationship with our

organisationsmore enduring?

And the answer to this is love.

Most successful professionals I

know are people who are in

love with what they do, where

they work and the people that

they work with. It is this love, or

passion, as it is sometimes

termed, which ensures that

such individuals remain at the

top of their game at all times.

These people are willing to

adapt and learn andfold their

sleeves in the wake of any

external challenges that their

organisations face. They are in

a harmonious relationship with

their organisations.

While finding the right job or

the right organisation is a

matter of search – its only you

who can decide where your

calling lies – a major hinderance

in establishing a romantic

relationship with our workplace

is our outlook towards work.

Often, we are guilty of

relegating our sensitivities and

our emotions to the personal

sphere, approaching work with

as much objectivity as we can

muster.

“I stop thinking about work as

soon as I step out of office,”

one of my colleagues often

says. Imagine, if you

approached any of your

personal relationships with

similar degree of detachment,

would it ever last? Why then

shouldn’t we be a little more

involved with something that

takes up more than half our

waking hours?

A healthy and committed

relationship with our work and

workplace might hold more

rewards for us than we can

imagine. So, are we then ready

to invest in this relationship and

rekindle the romance? s

SHORT STORY

CHEELU PEELU AND THE RICKSHAW WALA

With the car breakdown, Beeji decided

to go to the mall in a rickshaw.

“I’ll come with you, too.” said

CheeluPeelu, “I like rickshaw rides.”

They both walked to the rickshaw

stand.

“Areybhaiya, how much will you charge

for the mall?” asked Beeji.

“Thirty Rupees, Mataji.” said the

rickshaw wala.

Beeji said, “That’s too expensive.

Twenty-five is the right price.”

“But Beeji, you always pay thirty rupees

for mall,” whispered Cheelu Peelu.

“Shhh, you are just a kid. You don’t

know. This is bargaining.”

“Okay, I’ll take twenty-five,” said the

Rickshaw wala.

Cheelu Peelu sat with Beeji inside the

shaded cover of the rickshaw. While the

rickshaw walapedalled in the blazing

summer sun, wiping the sweat with his

scarf.

“Here you go, Mataji!” Rickshaw wala

stopped in front of the mall.

Beeji paid him and walked towards the

Mall.

“Come, Cheelu Peelu.” she offered to

hold Cheelu Peelu’s hand.

“Wait, Beeji. I’ll be back.” And she ran to

the rickshaw wala.

“Bhaiya, take these five rupees more,”

said Cheelu Peelu, “This is from my icecream

money. Beeji won’t know.”

“Betiya,” said Rickshaw wala, “I did a

deal with your Beeji in twenty-five so I

won’t take more.”

“And I won’t charge to take you back.”

“When will you return?” he asked.

“In one hour.” replied Cheelu Peelu.

“I’ll be here in the rickshaw stand area.”

After about an hour, Cheelu Peelu came

out of the mall with Beeji. She had ice -

creams in both hands. She gave one to

the rickshaw wala.

“I got my favouriteflavour for you.

Here!”

“Thank you, Betiya!” said the rickshaw

wala.

Beeji said, “You are not just a kid. You

are a kid with a big heart!”

“No, I am a kid with just a kid-sized

heart.” smiled Cheelu Peelu.

VALENTINE’S SPECIAL

GIVE LOVE ANOTHER CHANCE

It’s love at first sight; true love happens only once in a lifetime... Is all this a

passé, a cliché?

Meera Bakshi

Dr Renu Prasad, a medical

doctor, beautiful, witty; in

all a ‘perfect’ package to

be a wife, a charming

companion to take pride

in, gets separated from

her husband within a year

of their marriage. Here is Namrata Kumar,

highly cultured, educated articulate woman

ran through bad marriage after spending

23 years with her husband and finally both

calling it quits in the year of their silver

jubilee. Here is Mohit who married ‘the

love of his life’ after dating her for six years

finds excuses to stay away from the house

and avoid an altercation with Nidhi, his wife

now.

Where is the cupid?

So does the cupid all of a sudden cease to

exist or takes a dive to leave hearts! What

goes wrong in the relationship that love

loses its sheen. The reasons could be

endless- lack of compatibility, loss of

interest or thrill, financial reasons or an

external influence are some of the common

factors, share the counselling experts.

In the current times, both men and women

who have come out of bad marriages are

ready to move forward and perhaps give

themselves yet another chance. “There is

life beyond two people being together,

sometimes just doesn’t click, no pint

dragging just for the sake of it,’’ says Mohit.

Namrata went through a very bad spell she

shares.” I wasn’t a working woman when I

separated from my husband. It took me

quite some strength to face the situation.

Went for counselling too but guess even

relationships have an expiry date.’’ With a

24-year-old son, settled in the US and a job

in hand she feels more confident. “I can

manage my life, take decisions and I’m not

abused. I’m not keen to settle down again,

but not averse to the idea also. A

companion at every stage is important,’’

she says.

Pavitra from Maharashtra got married to

her boyfriend at the young age of 22 years.

Next five years of marriage the couple was

divorced and the child born to them

started to live with the mother. When the

child was ten years Pavitra remarried into a

Punjabi family. Now married for over fifteen

years, she says, “I wanted a family and a

companion so remarried. But when I look

back I realise my first marriage was not

successful because as a couple both of us

were immature. Now I know marriage is not

a bed of roses, one has to nurture the

relationship each day and there are no

perfect marriages either.’’

In cases of loss of life, the situation

sometimes may be more sensitive. The

couples take their own adjusting time to

come out of their trauma. Since our life is a

story and we live in chapters, one unhappy

chapter may end to open a new happy

ending.

Second chances are not given to making

things right- or perfect but given to prove

that we could be better even after we fall.

To know more about tourism in

Ajman and what the

department is doing to

increase Indian visitor numbers

in line with Ajman Vision 2021

we spoke to HE Saleh

Vasujit Kalia

1. Do you agree that

India remains the

number one volume

generator for

tourism to Ajman?

India continues to be an

important market for the

UAE in general and Ajman

in particular; the Emirate

welcomed 25,870 visitors

from India in 2018, a year on

year increase of 12.4 per cent.

These figures are indicative of

the importance of India’s

market to Ajman tourism and

they reflect our continued

efforts to strengthen

partnerships with major tour

operators in India.

2. Do you agree that

there is a rising

popularity of Ajman as a

destination of choice

among Indians?

The Emirate of Ajman is an

increasingly popular destination

In

addition to its rich

heritage, Ajman has a

variety of activities and

attractions for people of all

ages. Guests can enjoy

stunning beaches, pristine

coastline, mangrove forests,

and villages in the Hajar

Mountains.

for

a large

number of tourists from within

the UAE and abroad. As part of

our strategy to highlight and

promote tourism in the Emirate

of Ajman locally, regionally and

internationally, Ajman Tourism

Development Department

(ATDD) will participate in three

major exhibitions this year: ITB

Berlin; the Arabian Travel

Travel Market

in London.

ATDD will also

be

participating in

the ‘Visit UAE’

road shows to

India, the Kingdom

of Saudi Arabia,

Scandinavia and Russia

along with the Ministry of

Economy. Our efforts to

promote Arabian heritage are

reflected in our slogan,

“Sincerely Emirati”.

3. Do you agree that

repeat travellers need to

be engaged to get better

results?

Repeat travellers are incredibly

important to us and to the

tourism industry as a whole.

When someone returns to a

destination, it means that their

first stay was excellent.

4. What are you doing to

attract the international

tourist coming for Expo

2020?

People are optimistic about the

impact that Expo 2020 Dubai

will have on the tourism

industry. With an expected 25

million Expo-related visits

between October 2020 and

April 2021, visitors will no

doubt be open to exploring

and discovering other parts of

the country. Ajman is One-hour

drive from the site of Expo

2020, and almost 30 minutes

from Dubai Airport. s

RAAHGIRI

RAAHGIRI DAY

JANUARY 2019

In last five years, Raahgiri which was conceptualised for Gurgaon initially has now

reached over 70 cities. Currently Raahgiri has made Sundays interesting for people

in old Gurgaon who gather in large numbers to enjoy the activities on the streets

The ‘Plug in Raahgiri’ in the

current season has involved

the entire Gurgaon. The

event is not stationed at one

location only, month after

month Raahgiri moves

across various pockets of

Gurgaon.This model gives an opportunity

to widespread the concept and reach out

to more stakeholders by cordoning off

street in different areas of the city every 2

to 3 months. The event shifted near sector

4 in November ’18 and since then more

then 60,000 citizens participated within

three months. Due to high demand and

continuous engagement, the event will stay

at same location till the end of march. The

weekly event has grown over years across

70 cities and 18 states in the country.

The month of January experienced varying

weather during Sunday mornings. It has

been chilly, breezy, misty and rainy but

people’s enthusiasm was nothing less than

great. The street was seen filled with

people walking, cycling, skating, dancing,

yoga and enjoying sports activities

throughout. Children and elderly people

were specially seen experiencing all the

activities regularly. Streets that are normally

dominated with traffic, were filled of happy

faces and smiles. Street games were also a

big hit among the children such as Gali

cricket, hopscotch, BhagamBhag etc. It was

also the month of 69th Republic Day

celebration and a small quiz was introduced

by emcee. Questions upon our national

flag, constitution, and nation were asked to

the crowd.

A Honda road safety zone has been one of

the main attractions for Raahgirs to sign a

pledge for cleaner and safer roads. People

take selfies with placards "this is my street"

and understand responsibility of reclaiming

their streets. Road Safety Officers in

collaboration with Traffic Police conducted

mass quiz upon traffic rules and gave small

prizes to the winners. HOPE Initiative, a

non-governmental organization dedicated

for health awareness in schools and

communities, carried out a series of

Nukkad Nataks for the road safety

campaign. These plays were performed by

school children, who very beautifully

portrayed the need to conserve water; be

aware about safety on roads; and even

importance of cleanliness around us. The

organization also conducted a quiz upon

traffic rules, and pedestrian safety; and

Winners were given small tokens for it.

Road safety anthem for Gurugram was

played during this, and people were seen

singling along it.

The event continues to focus on sustainable

mobility, road safety, healthy lifestyle and

inclusive city development. s

OFF THE RECORD

Shyam Grover, Founding Director

“Off the Record” is a series of collection of anecdotes,

tales, wisdom, poetry, etiquettes, gigs & gags and

satire, all rolled into one back page put together by a

back bencher!

YOU RACIST, FEMINIST, SEXIST,

JUDGEMENTAL PIG !

These are four fancy words in vogue that can

destroy not just a meaningful conversation but

also destroy you! These words didn’t exist until

two decades ago in their 'current meaning.'

Today you have to be very careful as you could

easily be construed as judgmental or racist or

sexist, even when you didn’t even mean it

remotely.

It’s kind of fashionable now to see everything

through these new lenses. We always referred to

Lord Krishna as ‘Kaala’ and Radha as as 'Gori,'

but we place Krishna on a higher pedestal. As

long as you don’t treat any skin colour as inferior

or superior than others, shouldn’t it be just fine?

Merely referring to skin colour is not racism. In

North India, so many parents nicknamed their

children as 'Kaala’.

If you point out something that’s awkwardish

even in your children, you are seen as judging

them, not as ‘wise advising’ them. You have a

fair opinion on something, they call you

judgmental. You have logic or a valid argument,

it’s being judgmental.

And I would rather not say anything about

people getting labeled as Sexist or Feminist at

drop of a hat everywhere at every moment even

when the subject of discussion has nothing to do

with gender even remotely.

Am I indecisive, I am not too sure
