Whenever I begin supporting a newemployee, I always ask them about theireating habits.You might think this would be a strangequestion, when I specialise in supportingmental health. Yet answers have includedsomebody taking in nothing but coffee fortwo whole weeks, then wondering whythey were on the brink of a ‘breakdown’.I’ve been there myself, by the way.In my twenties, I followed a dreadful diet.I went through several losses and periodsof deep trauma, and I found it extremelydifficult to cope. I suffered chronic sleepissues, I was prone to depression, and Iwas often ill, with terrible skin complaints.Little did I know back then, thatsupporting my gut health would help tomake me feel so much better.For years, I have been advocating the mental healthbenefits of a healthy gut, and the role it plays in creating ahealthy mind.Never has this been more important than now.With all of us dealing with often seismic changes to ourlives and routines, involving self-isolating, the challengesof lockdown, and the sad, tragic loss of friends and lovedones, boosting our mental and emotional wellbeing shouldbe a huge priority.
