GRAFFITI
From Board Members of WCID #145
Graffiti is a problem in our neighborhoods. Just in the first 3 1/2 months
of 2020, over $5,500 has been spent removing and/or applying a surface
that makes removal easier. It has appeared under bridges, on retainer
walls and on the trails themselves. Some are symbols, some are offensive.
According, to state law regarding vandalism and intentionally painting
on property:
Class “C” - misdemeanor if the pecuniary loss is less than $100.
Class “B” - $100 or more but less than $750.
Class “A” - $750 or more but less that $2,500.
Anything above this amount is considered a felony. The graffiti removed
from the trails in early April fell into the Class “A” category. The police are
notified and/or a police report is filed with each incident.
Please remind everyone, if caught, there will be ramifications and fines.
Your tax dollars could be put to better use than rectifying the willful
acts of a few individuals. The trails throughout Copperfield are for
the enjoyment of all. Everyone should be able to utilize them without
encountering offensive material. Each year the traffic on the trails
increases. We would like it to be a pleasant experience. Thank you. “See
Something - Say Something”
(CCA) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS
Egrets and Night Herons have created nesting sites in Copperfield for
the last 5 years shutting down pools, mailboxes & creating havoc in our
neighborhood. The Egrets and Night Herons WILL be returning now!!
Prevention is Crucial - Egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected
by Federal International Treaty, it’s illegal for residents to harass or harm the
birds once they lay eggs. Residents will need to band together and drive
them out of our neighborhood for the next several years. Preventing the
birds from building nests on residential property or in our parks is key.
1. Trim your tree and remove dead wood, these birds favor oak trees and
other hardwoods. But will nest in other mature trees as well. Trim your
tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other nearby trees.
Experts say this is the MOST effective step.
2. Remove any old inactive nest in your trees. Egret Prevention Tools! This
is the only opportunity homeowners have to scare the birds away and to
disrupt the cycle. Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site.
• Visual deterrents - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach
balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees.
• Noisemakers - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even children’s
toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the bird.
• Bright lights - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday
lights can be effective.
• Water sprayers - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters can
help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs.
• Pool poles - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and
remove early nesting material.
• Any Non-lethal devices.
• Check trees daily and remove the start of any nest quickly. Once birds
begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present and birds cannot
be harassed. If you have not yet taken action to prevent nesting on your
property, please do so now!
FIRE TRUCK CLEARANCE
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is still requesting homeowners
assist in addressing the low hanging trees within the Copperfield
Community. Low hanging limbs and branches are causing damage to
the fire departments equipment and damage to the homeowners’ trees,
hampering the response to emergency calls. Most of the fire departments
equipment is 13 feet tall and therefore need a 14 foot clearance from
trees that hang over the streets. Routes to locations have to be altered
to avoid these areas and some areas have no alternate route; leaving no
recourse but to park and walk to the locations.
VILLAGES OF COPPERFIELD NEWS
COPPERFIELD PLACE VILLAGE
(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR HIGH SCHOOL
AND COLLEGE GRADUATES!!!
Despite all changes that you as high school and college seniors have been
experiencing due to the Corona Virus, not attending school or seeing your
friends and now facing the possibility ending your school year without a
graduation ceremony; the Board and ALL our residents give you a BIG
HURRAH for your great accomplishment! We know that the graduation
ceremonies is a once in life time experience for you, family and friends
to attend. Some schools may not be having ceremonies; and those that
have set tentative dates to proceed will have limited attendance and or
only virtual graduations due to this crisis. We admire you for all you stand
for and we know that your dreams will still be accomplished. Even if your
school selected not to have their live graduation ceremonies, let it be
known that all your family and friends are very proud of you and wish
each and everyone of you the best of luck!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
OTHER ISSUES AND NEWS
The Board hopes that despite of the current health issue of the Corona
Virus, we must continue to have faith that this will all eventually come to
pass. Meanwhile, please try to abide by keeping our distances as required
not only for our own benefit but for others whom we may come into
contact with. We are all adults and responsible for our actions.
Due to the matter at hand with the Corona Virus we have CLOSED all Common
Areas or planned activities. This includes our Pool and Parks and Playground
areas. We have taped the restricting entry to the park and playground area,
but we continue to have it removed by non-abiding people. You can still
walk on the sidewalks and the esplanades and we are still supplying doggie
bags for you to walk your pets, therefore please be considerate of others.
All of this will also be posted on SCS Go. If you have not signed up, do so. All info and
special notices will be sent to you as they come about. This is NOT the Next-door
Neighborhood application. This application is from our own SCS management.
By now, you must have received an application form in the mail for your 2020
Pool Registration for activation of your Pool Access Key Card. Along with
this application you would have also received how to register into our new
Online Portal. Contact SCS if you did not receive. This does not mean you will
now have access to the pool. The pool will still remain closed until further
notice. This is only so that you will have immediate access if it does open.
It is important that you get involved in your community! Get the SCS
GO app and sign up to receive notices on news, events, Board meeting
reminders and much more for our community.
MIDDLEGATE VILLAGE
(MG) MIDDLEGATE HOA BOARD AND COMMITTEES
For those homeowners who’d like to make decisions that impact
Middlegate directly, take the steps to become a Board member. The HOA
Board consists of five members. They meet to vote on matters that affect
all of us in Middlegate. Committees advise the HOA. The Park and Pool
committee members become familiar with the nuts and bolts of the parks
and pool and make recommendations to the HOA Board. The newsletter
committee provides stories and photos for the Middlegate column in the
monthly Copperfield Community Newsletter. All committees are invited
to attend regular Board meetings. Contact the management company
to ask how to be nominated for an open Board position. Two positions
will become available soon. If a committee is more to your liking, jump
on Board. Let the management company know which one you want to
contribute to.Your management company is SCS Management. Your
Community Manager is Margie Naranjo. You can reach her at mnaranjo@
scsmgmt.com and 281-500-7138.
(MG) CONTINUE TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
We are all spending more time at home. Our houses now serve as home
offices and home classrooms. Be cognizant of your behavior in proximity
to the residents around you. Remember to pick up your dog’s poop
promptly. Keep outside music and all noise to a reasonable level. Keep
in mind that children nap and adults must sleep before and after work
shifts. For safety and health reasons, do not burn trash in the backyard.
Burning trash is not permitted in Middlegate. Be a good neighbor.
(MG) IT’S A PROCESS TO OPEN POOL
The Middlegate pool opening could be delayed after Harris County opens
back up. The pool company must certify lifeguards and that schedule is
uncertain. SCS will keep residents updated with pool opening news. SCS
has started pool registration for Middlegate residents, so that wristbands
can be made available. A current wristband is needed for pool access.
Pool registration form went out in early May via US Mail. Same form
posted on Middlegate website.
(MG) UTILITY EASEMENTS AND MIDDLEGATE MUDS
MUD operators and contractors work with the MUD districts to maintain
services and to make needed water line and sewer repairs. You likely have
seen their personnel at work on your street and maybe even in your yard.
Did you know that utilities have a right to access the portion of your
property which has been designated a utility easement? The existence of
these easements doesn’t typically have much day-to-day effect.
When you want to know where water and sewer utility easements are
located on your property, call the MUD operator (see contact info later in
story) or check the county records or refer to the survey of your property
to review the easement locations.
The Middlegate HOA does not govern the operations of the MUDs in
Middlegate. Each MUD has its own Board of Directors.
H2O Consulting is the operator that services MUD #162. Call H2O
Consulting at 281-861-6215 for MUD 162; it’s a 24-hour service number.
The Board of MUD 162 generally meets on the second Tuesday of the
month at the offices of H2O Consulting office at 5870 Highway 6 North.
The public is invited to attend Board meetings. See their website for
meeting agenda and time at www.hcmud162.com/meetings.
Inframark is the operator that services MUD #163. Call Inframark (Formerly
Severn Trent) at 281-579-4500 for MUD 163. For after-hour emergencies,
contact Inframark dispatch team at 281-398-8211. The Board of MUD 163
generally meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at Copperfield Joint
Operations Board Wastewater Treatment Plant at 7926 Highway 6 North.
Specific date, time and agenda can be requested by reaching out to the
contacts listed on the TCEQ site.
*SAFETY BREAKS”
One ten-minute break will be taken at ten (10) minutes before the hour,
every hour. This is to serve as a time of rest for our guests. This safety
break is for everyone including adults. In the fair housing act, it states
that it is age discrimination to not allow anyone under the age of 18 in
the pool during this 10-minute break. For this reason, the safety break is
for everyone. Lifeguards will remain on the lifeguard stand during this
break, to ensure the pool is vacant.
CHILD SAFETY POLICY
Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death
for children 1 to 4 years of age. Most cases are a result of little or no
supervision, access to a swimming pool or water front and can even occur
in a bathtub. As your pool management company, Malibu Aquatics wants
to create a safe environment for the children of your community. We will
implement our Child Safety Policy at your swimming pools for the 2020
swim season. This policy will improve accountability, create awareness
and ensure that every child is safe when visiting community pools. The
Child Safety Policy will be executed with the following rules:
• Children 48 inches and under in height entering the swimming pool
area will be required to wear a wristband issued by the lifeguards. • A
red wristband indicates that the child has NOT passed a Swim Test
administered by the lifeguards. Children with a red wristband are issued
a lifejacket that must be worn at all times. If the guardian elects to not
have the child wear a lifejacket, the guardian is then required to be within
arm’s length of the child at ALL times. The guardian is also issued a red
wristband. • A green wristband indicates that the child has passed a Swim
Test. Once a child has passed the Swim Test, the child’s name will be added
to our Child Safety Log. Each visit to the pool, the child will need to give
the lifeguard their name and a green wristband will be issued. Children
on the Safety Log are not required to wear a lifejacket or to be within
arm’s reach of their guardian. • The Swim Test consists of swimming one
length of the pool unassisted. This includes no aid from flotation devices,
the lane ropes, pool walls or the bottom of the pool. • Any child on the
Child Safety Log can be asked to perform a Swim Test again, should the
lifeguards on duty feel the child’s swimming ability has diminished.
(NM) THE NORTHMEAD HOA BOARD NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The Northmead HOA Board enjoys putting on our special events
during the year like: Yard of the Month, Movie in the Park and Christmas
Decorating Contest but we need volunteers! If you would like to volunteer
please contact Teresa Prather at teresa_prather@yahoo.com.
(NM) RULES FOR THE YARD OF THE MONTH CONTEST
The Yard-Of-The-Month (YOM) program has been established to
recognize the efforts of residents within Northmead Village, whether
they are homeowners or tenants, who demonstrate a clear and
consistent desire to maintain or improve their respective properties
above normal expectations. The Northmead Village HOA would like to
give you the recognition you deserve for creating a beautiful, well-kept
yard. This is a great way to improve the value of your home and make
our neighborhood a better place to live. RULES : YOM will be awarded
for the months of May thru August. A separate award will be granted for
the best decorated yard during the Holiday Season. The Committee will
be around the neighborhood monthly to determine the winner of the
YOM. Resident’s lawns will be judged the last week of the month prior to
the awarded YOM, except for the Holiday judging which will be judged in
December. Potential YOM winners are judged solely on the total exterior
appearance of their property and front yard as viewed from the street.
Please help us by have your house address visible as the judges view your
homes. Properties may not win yard of the month more than once a year.
The committee will notify the winner by mail and Nextdoor. Photos of the
yard will be taken and published in the newsletter and website. Property
owner must be in good standings with payments of dues.
The Copperfield Villages monthly Crime Watch meeting has been
(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS ISSUES
Educate yourself with the deed restrictions for our community. They are
available for reading or download on the community website, under
Documents and Forms, www.northmeadvillage.org/docs.html. The most
common issues are yard issues, stored vehicles, fences with missing
pickets, houses needing painting or power washing on the exterior.
(SC) FROM THE BOARD
We will always remember this time in our lives when the entire world
came to a halt and together we have adjusted to a new normal. The
global coronavirus pandemic problem affects every single one of us from
students to senior adults to parents working from home coordinating
online school assignments to strategizing where to find toilet paper. We
are thankful for those working on the frontline helping us stay safe. Take
time to thank first responders, health care workers and grocery store
employees. You are heroes daily anyway, but you deserve an extra dose
of appreciation as we battle this new enemy. Hopefully, our country has
started to rebuild by the time this newsletter comes out.
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up
your gear and experience nature. Whether you like roughing it or
prefer to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to
the trail, it’s important to keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut
butter, chocolate bars and dried fruits, especially if you are not
taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled
in a cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available.
The more modern campsite includes showers and recreational
facilities. These often include water hookups and parking pads for
RVs and campers and cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites
with no electrical hookups designed for tent usage. Other parks
only allow primitive camping and require everything you pack
into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs
if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the
glampers.
Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and
go camping! Nature is calling and there are so many ways to
enjoy a weekend or even more camping. National Camping
Month has been observed since the 1970s. Source: https://
Cheesy Potatoes on the Grill
INGREDIENTS:
4 slices Bacon
3 large Baking Potatoes
1 large Onion, sliced
1 cup processed Cheese, cubed
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/4 tsp. Black Pepper
1/2 tsp. dried Parsley
2 Tbs. Butter or Margarine
1 Tbs. Bacon Drippings
DIRECTIONS: In a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, fry the bacon until
crisp, reserving one tablespoon of the drippings. Drain the bacon on a paper
towel and crumble when it’s cool enough to handle. Set aside.
Peel and slice the potatoes, placing them on a 9-inch by 13-inch double-layer
of aluminum foil as you go. Separate the sliced onion into rings, and layer them
over the potato slices. Add the crumbled bacon bits, cheese, salt, pepper and
parsley. Dot the potatoes with butter or margarine, and drizzle the bacon fat
over the top of the mixture.
Wrap the foil loosely around the potatoes, but make sure the ends are well
sealed. Cook on the grill about 4 inches from the hot coals for about an hour,
or until tender. Remember to turn the package often to keep the potatoes
from burning. Serve warm from the grill. www.razzledazzlerecipes.com/
WHAT’S THAT
NET ON MY
TREE TRUNK?
By Deborah Birge, Fort
Bend County Master
Gardener
If you see a net over
your tree trunk, you’re
the lucky winner of
the Bark Lice Lottery!
Bark lice are small,
soft-bodied insects
that live on hardwood
trees, especially Live
Oaks and sometimes
on Pecans. Their
webbing appears in
midsummer and can
cover a tree trunk and
large branches very
quickly. But don’t be
alarmed - bark lice
are a great clean-up crew feeding on fungi, bacteria, dead insects and
lichens!
Although some people think they’re unsightly, bark lice are highly
beneficial and should be left alone. With the first fall frosts, they’ll begin
to decline, along with their web.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns: Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers: Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty
Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca,
Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables: A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most
bugs for the rest of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets,
Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs: Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now
for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch
well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of
Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the
surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing
evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and
hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to
prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of
mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
