Safety first at the 

farmers market

The Westgate Farmers Market will 

return this summer, but will look somewhat 

different as organizers work to 

ensure proper social distancing as they 

continue to monitor the impact of COVID- 

19 on the community. 

While many favorite vendors will 

return, organizers are putting into place 

precautions that will help keep attendees

Fresh Food Program

The Highland Youth Garden has 

kicked off a new program that will help 

ensure Hilltop families get the fresh produce 

they need - now and through the 

coronavirus pandemic. 

The Fresh Food Bag program at the 

community garden, located off Highland 

Avenue, allows individuals to drive up 

and point to the produce they wish to take 

home. Volunteers will then gather the 

produce and load it into the individual’s 

vehicle. 

The half-acre plot of land that sits at 

67 S. Highland Ave. just south of West 

Broad Street, is home to a wide variety of 

fresh fruits and vegetables. Although the 

selection that is available changes 

throughout the season, currently, items 

like swiss chard, lettuce and herbs are 

ready for harvest. As the temperatures 

continue to warm up, produce like tomatoes, 

squash and beans will be available. 

“It’s a pretty full range of what grows 

well in Ohio,” said Shelly Casto, executive 

director of the Highland Youth Garden. 

“We will have berries later, too.” 

All staff members and volunteers are 

masked and wear gloves, she said. 

Residents may walk up to receive the produce 

as well, though are required to stand 

a certain distance behind the tables. 

So far this season, the garden has provided 

fresh produce to about 100 individuals 

over the course of three sessions. 

Up until this spring, life at the garden 

looked somewhat different. Residents 

could peruse the medley of fruits and vegetables 

available in person. Children were 

often seen playing in the dirt and learning 

the origins of their food. Volunteers stood 

side-by-side, cultivating the land to help 

fill the needs of residents of the Hilltop, 

which local advocates say is a food desert. 

“Obviously we can’t gather in groups, 

but the good news is, we are outside,” 

Casto said. 

This has allowed volunteers and staff 

to continue to tend to the garden over the 

past few months - while practicing social 

distancing - so that residents with an 

immediate need for fresh food can be 

assisted.

“The Westgate Farmers Market Board 

began developing new safety precautions 

in early April, with the goal of creating a 

safe environment for our community members,” 

market manager Molly Donavan 

said. 

The market will be held from 9 a.m. to 

noon on the first and third Saturdays of 

each month, beginning June 6 and running 

through Oct. 17, at the West Gate Masonic 

Lodge. 

Event organizers have designated 9 to 

9:30 a.m. for vulnerable shoppers only, and 

have worked with the Ohio Farmers 

Market Network, Ohio Department of 

Agriculture and Columbus Public Health 

to ensure other safety precautions have 

been put into place. 

“We have also observed and learned 

from other markets that opened in May, 

and have closely monitored guidelines 

issued by the governor and department of 

health,” Donavan said. 

While residents can expect to see a variety 

of vendors, from produce, meat and 

eggs to baked goods, gourmet frozen popsicles 

and botanical products, they can 

expect to see several changes as well. 

“Due to the current circumstances, we 

had to make some changes, such as reducing 

our number of vendors and cancelling 

special programs and entertainment,” 

Donavan said. 

To help prevent the spread of COVID- 

19, Donavan says other precautions will 

include: 

● No cash accepted. 

● Entry to the market may be staggered 

to limit crowd size. 

● Vendor stalls will be spaced to ensure

“We’re excited that the fresh food bag 

distribution is helping us connect directly 

with our immediate neighborhood,” Casto 

said. “That’s really important to us to dig 

deep in our neighborhood.” 

Casto says despite these temporary precautions 

put into place, organizers are still 

working on future plans for when conditions 

improve. 

“We’re all planned up for people to come 

into the garden later in the summer, as 

well as for school trips if those start up 

again,” she said. “We are in a position to do 

that if it’s determined to be safe.” 

In the meantime, the group has created 

take-home kits for children that go home 

with the fresh food bags. These kits include 

agricultural learning activities kids can do 

from the safety of their home. 

The organization has also begun offering 

online gardening tutorials with the 

help of OSU Extension educators. The live 

Zoom webinars, which include topics like 

container gardening, allow individuals to 

ask questions and interact with one another.

to attend the market as well unless it compromises 

the health or safety of an individual, 

Donavan said. 

These procedures were developed based 

on best practices suggested by Columbus 

Public Health, the Centers for Disease 

Control and Prevention, the Farmers 

Market Coalition and the Ohio Farmers 

Market Network, Donavan said. 

“What hasn’t changed, however, is our 

mission to provide the westside community 

with access to fresh, locally sourced food 

and products,” she said. 

Organizers also ask residents to stay 

home if they feel unwell, to only enter and 

exit the market at designated points, to use 

hand sanitizer upon entry and to maintain 

the recommended distance of 6 feet from 

others. 

Attendees should refrain from touching 

any products, and instead ask the farmer 

or producer to collect and package any 

identified goods for purchase. 

“For customers who are concerned about 

attending the market in person, we encourage 

them to contact the vendors directly to 

see if other purchasing options are available,” 

Donavan said.

“We’re trying to remain flexible and 

assume that in the future we’ll be able to go 

back to what we normally do, but realize 

things may change,” Casto said. 

Casto, who recently took over as executive 

director for the organization, says it 

was the coronavirus and the impact on the 

community that was the driving force 

behind serving in this capacity. 

“I spent 17 years as the education director 

at the Wexner Center for the Arts, and 

left in December. I took some time off, and 

then the COVID disaster hit,” she said. 

“For me, it made a lot of sense to dig deep 

in the community to do some direct work.” 

Pickup times for the fresh food bags will 

continue through the gardening season on 

Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and 

Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon. Reservations 

are not required, and there is no cost for 

the produce, though donations are accepted.

CCS announces virtual graduation plan 

I am pleased to share with you that we will celebrate 

our seniors’ academic achievements with a virtual 

graduation ceremony. They have worked hard to 

earn their high school diploma, and Columbus City 

Schools is ready to honor their achievements. 

Driving our decision to hold virtual graduation ceremonies 

during this global pandemic was doing everything 

we possibly can to keep each of our students, 

their families, our staff, and our community safe from 

COVID-19. Developing the right graduation plan during 

this unprecedented time has always been about 

balancing safety with our desire to celebrate your 

graduation appropriately. A virtual graduation ceremony 

for the class of 2020 does that. 

Here’s the plan: 

Cap and Gown Pick-up: Seniors will pick up their 

caps and gowns from their respective high schools 

after June 1, on a staggered schedule developed by 

each building administrator. Social distancing guidelines 

will be strictly enforced. Seniors will be required 

to stay in their cars during their designated pick-up 

time. Families without a vehicle will be directed to a 

safe waiting area for pick-up. Students will also turn 

in electronic devices, equipment or uniforms. 

Senior Fee: The board of education has waived the 

$70 senior fee for students in the class of 2020. The 

decision is aimed at avoiding an additional burden to 

seniors who are already enduring a stressful end to the 

academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Families who have already paid the fee will receive 

information on how to obtain a refund.

It was a graduation ceremony like no 

other: On May 23, hundreds of seniors at 

each of the four high schools in the 

South-Western City Schools District participated 

in a drive-thru ceremony where 

they were able to don caps and gowns, 

walk across a stage to pick up their 

diploma covers and take photographs to 

commemorate their achievement. 

Though it was unlike traditional ceremonies 

due to state mandated crowd 

restrictions to slow the spread of a novel 

coronavirus, the graduating class of 

2020 said they were thankful a modified

the student leaders who worked with the 

district and state boards of health and

will take place during the week of June 22-27. Each 

high school’s virtual graduation ceremony will be 

streamed live on the Columbus City Schools Facebook 

page and YouTube channel, aired on the Columbus 

Educational Access channel, and also simulcast on 

WCBE 90.5 FM. 

Ceremonies: Our 19 high schools will have a special 

nationally-renowned commencement speaker, short 

remarks from me, your principal, and each school’s 

valedictorian or chosen student speaker, along with 

reading the names of each graduating senior. 

Share Best Wishes: We encourage everyone to share 

their photos, words of encouragement, and congratulatory 

messages on social media using the hashtag 

“CCSGrad2020.” 

Additional Graduation Details Online: All your 

graduation information including cap and gown pick 

up, completer ceremonies and summer graduation will

This will be a big change for the center that 

has thousands typically visit in a months’ 

time. 

“It is going to be significantly less than 

we would normally allow in, but with the 

social distancing guidelines still in place, 

this was the number we could allow in at 

one time and still meet those standards,” 

said Rob Peters, administrator for Prairie 

Township. “Members will be allowed in the 

fitness equipment area, as well as on the 

walking track.” 

Peters said the pool will remain closed 

and the gym will not be open because the 

township will be utilizing it for other activities. 

If someone stops by the center while it is 

at the maximum capacity, a visitor will 

have to wait outside until someone leaves. 

“On average, people work out an hour to 

an hour and a half, so we anticipate a continual 

flow of people coming and leaving,”

Prairie Community Center to reopen at reduced capacity 

Among the events that have been cancelled 

is the Prairie Township Firefighter’s 

Association Fish Fry and Cruise-In. 

“After a long discussion with the association 

members, it has been decided to not 

have the fish fry this year,” said Prairie 

Township Fire Chief Allen Scott. “We 

thought about trying to do a drive-thru or 

making the event different this year. 

However, it was going to be hard to social 

distance during the event with all the work 

that needs to be done, so the association 

felt this was the safest option.” 

The annual fish fry is the biggest 

fundraiser for the fire department every 

year and money from the event goes toward 

equipment, as well as household needs of 

the association since members of the fire 

department live at the firehouse for 24- 

hour periods. 

Items purchased in the past with the 

funds from the fish fry include materials 

for the fire trucks, recliners, grills, cable 

TV and other personal items the firefighters 

need when they are staying at the firehouse 

while on duty. 

“This would have been the 71st year for 

the fish fry, so it is a big disappointment for 

all of us,” Scott said. “However, we are trying 

to follow the direction of Dr. Amy Acton 

of the Ohio Department of Health, as well 

as the CDC.” 

Ohioans are still not advised to gather 

in groups of more than 10, so the majority 

of festivals, celebrations and other community 

gathers have been cancelled this 

spring and summer. 

The fire department was able to host its 

annual Mother’s Day plant sale, however it 


Peters said. “We hope at some point to open 

the pool, but right now with the occupancy 

requirements and social distancing guidelines 

there was not a way to configure the 

pool to make it work.” 

The center also has no plans to offer any 

type of classes right now, but does hope to 

phase those in as social distancing guidelines 

are slowly eased. 

Peters said members who purchased 

memberships to use the pool or utilize fitness 

classes will not be charged when the 

center reopens. Only members who visit 

the center will have their bill resume, if a 

member doesn’t visit the center their membership 

will not restart. 

The township also plans to continue to 

have their trustees meetings remotely. 

“Social distancing guidelines are still in 

place and people are only allowed to gather 

in groups of 10 people or less,” Peters said. 

“Until this changes I don’t foresee us having 

in-person meetings.” 

Peters said with the social distancing 

guidelines in place and how small their 

meeting room is, it wouldn’t be possible to 

have meetings at township offices. They 

also don’t feel it is fair to exclude everyone 

from the meetings except for a few people 

due to the 10-person capacity limit. 

“The current format we have been having 

meetings in seems to really be working 

and residents are always reminded they 

can submit questions anytime before the 

meetings and they will be addressed by the 

trustees,” Peters added. “They also don’t 

have to wait for a meeting to ask a question. 

They can reach out to us anytime to 

have their questions answered.”

Firefighters cancel fish fry and more activities 

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we 

have decided to cancel the following events: 

• 2020 Auction 

• WABA Parade scheduled for June 27 

• September Discover Westland Event

plants were placed in the vehicles of buyers, 

keeping a strict social distance 

between first responders and shoppers. 

Fire department officials are still deciding 

if they can host the annual Reading 

with a Firefighter Program for area children, 

as well as the annual Fire Prevention 

Week Celebration. 

Reading with a Firefighter invites children 

into the firehouse and a firefighter 

reads to them. They also get to tour the 

firehouse, get an up-close look at the fire 

trucks and participate in activities. The 

program usually lasts over several weeks. 

“Right now, we are not allowing anyone 

into the firehouse except for our staff, so we 

are not sure if the reading program will 

take place,” Scott said. “We are exposed to 

COVID-19 regularly when we respond to 

calls, so we do not want to risk children or 

families getting it by visiting the firehouse. 

It is a wonderful program, but it is not 

worth people getting sick to put it on.” 

The fire prevention event usually takes 

place in October around Fire Prevention 

Week and gives residents an opportunity to 

explore the firehouse, eat from food trucks 

and do some fire related activities. Right 

now, the fire department is still deciding if 

this event will take place as well. 

“This situation is constantly changing, 

so we will have to wait until we get closer 

to the fall to decide if this event will take 

place,” Scott said. “We have to be sure it is 

safe to bring people into the firehouse and 

make sure we aren’t exposing anyone to 

anything.” 

In addition, our monthly luncheons will 

be postponed until this fall.

Summer Jam cancelled 

It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to cancel 

the 2020 Summer Jam West festival. 

We were looking forward to providing a sense of normalcy and 

a much-needed celebration for our community with a day full of 

music, art, and fun. However, with no lifting of restrictions on 

gatherings in sight and no clear picture of what the reality of 

those gatherings would ultimately look like, we decided it’s best to 

put the health and safety of our vendors, bands, artists, and community 

ahead of everything else. 

We have our sights set on July 10, 2021 in anticipation of bringing 

you the best Summer Jam West festival yet. 

As an organization, we still have much to celebrate. Soon, 

Michael and Chris from Artisan Rooms will begin the Color Your 

World Green mural project at 3045 Sullivant Avenue. We eagerly 

anticipate watching the progress and are planning a community 

dedication as circumstances will allow. 

This was not an easy decision for us, but we know it’s in everyone’s 

best interest. We’re all in this together.

Coronavirus Causes Cancellations 

HBA to cancel Bean 

Dinner for 2020 

Due to concerns over the coronavirus 

restrictions for at least the next several 

weeks, and uncertainty about when it will 

be safe for people to be part of a large 

crowd again, the Hilltop Business 

Association (HBA) has decided to cancel 

the Hilltop Bean Dinner for 2020. 

This is a hard decision, as the HBA has 

sponsored the Hilltop Bean Dinner for 

nearly 100 years now. However, public 

health and safety is everyone’s first concern. 

In addition, the HBA spends nearly 

$7,500 to put on the Bean Dinner each 

year, and it seems unwise to expend those 

funds for an event that may well be cancelled 

by the government. 

The HBA plans to be back in 2021 with 

the best Bean Dinner ever. We will be 

doing what we can to improve conditions 

on the Hilltop in the meantime.

Ohio State Fair cancelled 

The Ohio Expositions Commission announced it will cancel the 

2020 Ohio State Fair, originally scheduled for July 29 - Aug. 9 in 

Columbus. 

Members of the commission expressed concern for public 

health, as well as the financial feasibility of hosting a fair that 

would adhere to social distancing protocols and its impact on the 

long-term viability of the Ohio State Fair. 

“After careful thought and deliberation, we have decided to 

cancel the Ohio State Fair. Knowing how easily the virus spreads 

in large groups, we believe it is the safest path forward for the 

health and safety of all Ohioans,” said Andy Doehrel, chair of the 

Ohio Expositions Commission. “The financial ramifications of 

hosting a reduced-capacity fair would be too great and we need to 

protect the Ohio State Fair for future generations.” 

Last year, 934,925 people attended the Ohio State Fair during 

its 12-day run. These attendees came from each of Ohio’s 88 counties, 

all 50 states, the District of Columbia, as well as Canada and 

Mexico. 

The Ohio Expositions Commission is focused on developing a 

strategy to responsibly reopen its year-round facilities when 

appropriate, and to welcome guests back for the 2021 Ohio State 

Fair, scheduled for July 28 through Aug. 8 of next year.

as an outdoor cat. As a result, his mouth may 

look a little funny and he is a messy eater, but 

his adorable smile is all worth it. This 2-yearold

Summer Reading Challenge goes digital 

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) 

will offer, amid the ongoing coronavirus 

pandemic, an all-digital Summer Reading 

Challenge beginning May 30 and concluding 

Aug. 1. 

Summer Reading Challenge is CML’s 

signature program to keep young readers 

from losing critical literacy skills during 

the summer months. Loss of these skills is 

often referred to as summer slide, and 

places children at a learning disadvantage 

once school begins again in August. 

“Gov. (Mike) DeWine’s closure of Ohio’s 

K-12 public schools, coupled with the challenges 

students and educators face with athome 

learning, means the summer slide 

could be steeper than ever before,” said 

CML Public Services Director Kathy 

Shahbodaghi. “Which is why we’re more 

committed than ever before to offering an 

engaging Summer Reading Challenge this 

year.” 

Due to the ongoing pandemic, this 

year’s nine-week program will be offered 

with several modifications put in place to 

ensure the community’s health and safety. 

Changes include: 

• The program will be online only 

through columbuslibrary.org/summerreading 

and — new this year — with the free 

READsquared app (available on iOS and 

Android devices). Customers of all ages can 

use the app to log in and track activity just 

like on CML’s website. 

• CML will not offer any in-person programs 

at its 23 locations. CML will instead 

offer a calendar of free virtual events. 

• The VolunTeen program, which 

enables 12 to 17-year-olds to help with customer 

sign-ups and programs, has been 

canceled. 

• Customers will be able to track their 

reading on a Game Board and play 

Reading Activity Bingo to be entered into 

raffles for prizes. CML will have raffle 

drawings for gift cards and food offers 

along the way, as well as a raffle at the end 

of the program that includes kids’ bikes, 

helmets and locks for the 5-11 age group, 

as well as book bundles for all other age 

groups. 

• New this year: the Community 

Challenge. CML challenges Franklin 

County readers to reach a reading goal of 

six million minutes. Participants can check 

the community’s progress when logged into 

their Summer Reading Challenge account. 

• Also new this year: the School 

Challenge. One Franklin County elementary 

school, middle school and high school 

building with students recording the highest 

total number of reading minutes will 

each receive free books. Students will be 

able to track their school’s progress in their 

Summer Reading Challenge accounts. 

Customers of all ages can log in beginning 

May 30.

guy. He is very 

curious and likes to 

explore with his nose.

sweetie. She is independent 

and freespirited 

but loves

cuddles. Garland is

seen on radiographs. She really is a 

cuddle-bug and will become your shadow in 

no time. Garland should be the only pet in the 

home, but she promises she’s worth it.
