Firecracker 5K
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Elizabeth “Elle” Dean absolutely loves the Fourth of July.
From the moment she wakes up, she buzzes with excitement
at the prospect of time with family, sharing sparklers with her
sister and neighborhood friends, and watching dazzling displays
of fireworks as they light up the night sky.
“The Fourth of July starts and ends with a bang for Elle,” said
her mother, Kathryn with a laugh.
To the 6-year-old girl who calls Grove City home, it is a day
that holds so much potential and she already believes that July
4, 2020 could prove to be the most memorable yet.
Her anticipation for this date began with an announcement
late last year: Unbeknownst to the Dean family, Kathryn’s sister,
Dr. Elizabeth Hewitt, and her brother-in-law, Joel
Wichtman, had spent the better part of 2019 establishing a foundation
to be named in Elle’s honor. Not only would this foundation
be used to fund research and treatment for Juvenile
Myositis, a rare and complex autoimmune disorder that affects
two to four children out of a million each year, but they had
founded an annual 5K to be named after her most beloved holiday.
“We could not believe what we were hearing,” said Kathryn.
“I had no idea my sister and brother-in-law were doing this for
us, and I had no idea that Elizabeth could be so sneaky.”
“I was not being sneaky,” said Hewitt, a podiatrist at Foot and
Ankle Physicians of Ohio. “I just didn’t tell her about it because
I wanted it to be a surprise.”
According to Hewitt, a variety of factors played a role in their
decision to establish the Elizabeth Dean Foundation and the
Firecracker 5K, and it wasn’t just because of the love they have
for their niece.
“We wanted to give something back to this community,” she
said. “The people here have been so welcoming and supportive of
Elle and this foundation and the race is our way of saying ‘thank
you’ for all that they have done.”
Having moved to the area more than a decade ago for her residency
at Grant Medical Center, Hewitt would always encourage
her sister to visit as she found it to be charming. At first, she
would invite her to Ohio for the holidays, then to team up and
run marathons like they did in high school and then eventually
she started planting ideas of a permanent move in her head.
Kathryn said she was not averse to the idea but did not feel it
was the right time as she and her husband were starting to dis-
with the DORA that would need renewal in one year’s
time.
Councilman Aaron Schlabach said local business
establishments have reported growth from the DORA,
not just the ones participating in the program, but the
other businesses as well.
“They (business owners) have all expressed a desire
to continue the DORA,” said Schlabach.
The DORA allows patrons (age 21 and older) to purchase
an alcoholic beverage from an approved, liquor
permitted establishment, then leave said establishment
to travel within the DORA boundaries.
Originally the DORA ran from 2 p.m. to midnight
Thursday, Friday and Saturday. With the program
renewal, council also signed off on allowing the DORA
to now operate from Monday through Saturday with
the same hours as mentioned.
“The DORA has been fantastic,” said Andy Furr,
with the Heart of Grove City. “We have seen an uptick
in feet on the street and it just continues to grow.”
The Heart of Grove City is an organization with the
goal to promote business in the Grove City Town
Center. The Heart of Grove City proposed the DORA to
increase visitors in the downtown area.
“It has been a great resource to have in the toolbox,”
said Furr.
The DORA allows patrons to purchase a drink at an
approved establishment and have the beverage poured
into a specially marked cup. Only beverages in DORA
cups are permitted and protected from the city’s open
container laws. No cans, bottles, or alcoholic beverages
purchased from outside establishments are permitted
within the DORA. Businesses authorized to sell alcohol
in the DORA include Grandstand Pizza, Grove City
Brewing Co., Hop Yard 62, Local Cantina, Parker’s
Tavern, Planks on Broadway, Plum Run Winery, and
Zassy’s Taproom.
When this program was initially approved by city
council, some in the community were concerned about
criminal or inappropriate behavior that can sometimes
be associated with people being intoxicated.
According to Furr, there was just one incident last
year that the police had to handle.
Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage said there
may not be many police issues, but there are issues.
Namely litter.
The mayor said there has been half-filled beer cups
left on the ground and even right by trash receptacles.
“These are issues that should be spoken to,” said
Stage. “This is an issue.”
Stage said the business owners should be responsible
to keep the area clean and safe.
Furr told city leaders that he would address the litter
issue with the permit holders.
According to the law director, Ohio law requires a
DORA review every five years. However, the city’s legislation
states that the program would face a review
each year.
Stage said he prefers to stay with a one-year review
considering the expansion of days allowed in the
DORA.
“We’ll see how it works out,” said Stage.
According to city legislation, the DORA will not be
in operation during events such as Boo Off Broadway,
the Christmas Celebration and Homecoming.
The Grove City DORA had been suspended with the
shut down of non-essential businesses to stop the
spread of COVID-19. Earlier this month, Governor
Mike Dewine and Health Director Dr. Amy Acton gave
the clearance for outdoor dining to reopen. As of May
15, the DORA has been permitted to reopen though
establishments must follow state social distancing
guidelines.
In 2014, when Kathryn was pregnant
with Elle and living in Illinois, she experienced
a number of complications.
“I had a very challenging pregnancy
that was riddled with issues,” she said. “I
had thought that something might be happening
with Elle too but I didn’t really
want to believe it at the time.”
When Elle was born — premature and
with an underdeveloped thyroid gland, a
comprised immune system and partial
facial paralysis — she spent the first four
months of her new life in the neonatal
intensive care unit fighting to survive.
Later, when she developed ocular tumors
and was given four months to live, she
exceeded expectations to overcome those
odds.
When she was diagnosed with Juvenile
Myositis, the rare and complex disorder
that causes the body’s own immune system
to attack healthy cells, tissues and muscles,
she co-existed with all its complications
and continued to flourish.
Kathryn said it was important that Elle
live as normal of a life as possible, and she
felt that could be achieved when they
moved to Grove City in 2016.
“I knew from visiting my sister that this
was a wonderful place and the people here
have proven to be wonderful as well.”
She said that while children in Elle’s
school have inquired about her differences
(her motor skills are delayed due to her illnesses
but they are developing and she is
always striving to perfect her burgeoning
talents), they have embraced her and
anointed her as a member of their family.
Eventually, her classmates and new
friends decided they wanted to know more
about JM and how they could help. They
turned to their parents who began to do
their own research and created a neighborhood
fundraising effort.
According to the Myositis Association,
there is currently no cure for the disease
Dr. Elizabeth Hewitt (right) and her husband Joel Wichtman founded the Elizabeth
Dean Foundation and the Firecracker 5K. Hewitt said she wanted to establish a fun
event for her family and the community that promotes inclusivity and awareness for
pediatric disorders. Here, Hewitt poses with her sister, Kathryn Dean, at the
Thanksgiving Wattle in Grove City.
but there are treatments that can successfully
manage the symptoms. Kathryn said
that, with more research and funding, Elle
could be one of those children whose symptoms
become manageable.
“I don’t see why it couldn’t happen to
her,” she said.
All of the proceeds for the Firecracker
5K, which is presented by the Foot and
Ankle Physicians of Ohio, will go to fund
research at the Cure JM Foundation and
other organizations that seek treatments
for unknown pediatric pathology.
The race/walk will be held at the
Pinnacle Golf Club, located at 1500
Pinnacle Club Drive in Grove City; participation
will be limited at 300. The race has
been approved by both the city and Ohio
Health.
The event will start at 7:45 a.m. on July
4 with a 100-meter Sparkler Sprint for kids
aged 3 to 9. There is a $15 race fee and a
$2.50 sign-up fee. Participants will earn a
complimentary race day t-shirt, a finisher’s
medal and finisher post-race refreshments.
At 8 a.m., the Firecracker 5K will begin
for racers and walkers and it will take
them throughout the Pinnacle Golf Course
and surrounding area. There is a $35 race
fee and a $3 sign-up fee. Participants will
also earn a complimentary race day t-shirt,
finisher’s medal and finisher post-race
refreshments.
The deadline for registration for both
events is 7:30 p.m. on July 3.
After the race, participants will be invited
to a brunch where mixologists at Cimi’s
Bistro have crafted a “Firecracker Fizz” to
top off the event. There will also be an Ohio
Health and Wellness Expo on the premises.
While July 4, 2020 holds the promise of
another fun day, one person who will have
to sit on the sidelines is Elle. Due to her
compromised immune system, she will be
unable to watch the race and cheer for the
runners and walkers in person because of
the global pandemic. But she will be there
in spirit, and likely in some other fashion.
“We are working on some special ideas
with technology,” said Hewitt. “We know
how much she wanted to be there and to be
able to say “Go” to the racers so we are trying
to come up with a way for her to safely
have a role in it.”
Less than a month ago, the class of 2020 believed that the only graduation ceremony
they would be able to participate in would be a virtual one due to crowd restrictions to
slow the spread of a novel coronavirus. But thanks to the ingenuity of their fellow
seniors, as well as the approval of the state boards of health and education, a drivethru
ceremony was able to be held at the four high schools in the South-Western City
District. On May 23, hundreds of graduating seniors were able to participate in a notquite-traditional
ceremony where, once they were allowed to exit their vehicles, they
were able to walk across the stage wearing their caps and gowns to collect their diploma
covers and have their pictures taken. Though many said the event wasn’t what they
have dreamed about since their freshman year, they were thankful to have this opportunity.
Staff Writer
Residential plans to purge homes and garages of
unwanted materials hit a snag this year as dozens of
scheduled cleanup events were cancelled in order to
adhere to state guidelines to slow the spread of a novel
coronavirus. Among those who made the decision to cancel
their own was Jackson Township.
According to officials, the spring and fall cleanup events
attract hundreds of residents who are looking to safely
unload old appliances, tires, scrap metal, electronic waste
and other goods that no longer serve any household use.
“We know that the cleanup is one of our most popular
events and we did not make the decision to cancel it lightly,”
said Township Administrator Shane Farnsworth. “But
at the same time, knowing how many residents this event
brings in, we knew we could not safely follow social distancing
guidelines set forth by the state health department.”
He said following the decision to cancel the cleanup
event, they heard from many residents who expressed
their understanding while noting their disappointment.
In the days that followed the announced cancellation for
the May 2 spring cleanup event, township officials “put
their heads together” and came up with a plan to service
the community.
“We decided to hold staggered cleanup events throughout
the summer,” said Farnsworth.
Farnsworth explained that residents in the unincorporated
parts of the township will be permitted to drop off
unwanted materials at its administrative building, located
at 3756 Hoover Road in Grove City, Monday through
Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Holidays are excluded and
the Fourth of July will be observed on July 3.)
He said residents will be asked to sign in at the front
office and then they will be directed to the receptacle area
behind the building where they can dispose of their goods.
The administrator noted that the area, which is gated,
will be locked after hours and requested residents to not
leave their items on the property.
“No off hours dumping, please,” he said.
Those who wish to dispose of tires during office
hours can do so, but they are limiting the number
of tires to four per vehicle.
Electronic waste will also be permitted with the
exception of TVs and monitors.
“We will be accepting computer components and
other e-waste components at this location,” he said.
“They will then be recycled.”
This service will run through Sept. 18.
The township will also offer brush and yard
waste clean up to its unincorporated residents
throughout the summer. Residents are asked to
place the brush or yard waste along the front of the
property with the caveat that limbs are to be no
longer than six inches and that there are no
stumps. The collection days for this service are May
26-29; June 22-26; July 27-31; Aug. 24-28; and
Sept. 21-25.
Farnsworth also suggested that residents can
drop off yard waste at the Columbus Com-Til facility,
located at 7000 Jackson Pike (State Route 104).
Unlike previous spring cleanup events, paper
shredding services will not be available until the
planned fall cleanup on Sept. 26. Farnsworth recommended
that residents contact Ohio Mobile
Shredding for shredding services.
As with previous years, the township will not
accept hazardous wastes such as chemicals, oils,
Township to hold staggered cleanup events throughout the summer
paints or batteries. It will also not accept lightbulbs.
Farnsworth said that if residents have any questions
about what materials are accepted to contact the office at
614-875-2742 or email the office at info@jacksontwp.org.
“We will be happy to assist them or provide alternative
sources if we cannot be of service,” said Farnsworth.
Township trustees hope to receive COVID-19 aid package
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
The state is set to allocate thousands of
dollars to Jackson Township in order to
mitigate the financial impact of COVID-19.
At the May 12 board of trustees meeting,
Fiscal Officer Ron Grossman said the
state will distribute $92,000 to the township
should Senate Bill 310 pass the
House.
The allocation of state funds to municipalities
and townships is a part of a greater
federal aid package that was sent to Ohio
through the passage of the Coronavirus
Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.
Under the bill, the funds can only be
used on expenses related to the pandemic.
Video Time Capsule
Competition
Vinton County National Bank is sponsoring
a Video Time Capsule Competition
for graduating 2020 seniors who live in
Franklin, Fairfield, Hocking, Jackson,
Licking, Pickaway, Ross and Vinton counties.
The winning entry from each county
will receive $2,020 cash.
Entries should be no longer than two
For example, it can be used to cover the
cost of testing, the cost of disinfecting vehicles,
the purchase of personal protective
equipment and other emergency personnel
expenses.
Grossman said when, and if, the bill is
passed, the township will set up a fund and
transfer payments already made under the
restricted usage.
He said to date, the fire department has
spent $27,000 to purchase personal protective
equipment and disinfect their vehicles.
Last month, the township also received
$36,000 from the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services as a component
of the CARES Act. Those dollars were
to be used under the EMS fund.
In other financial news, Grossman said
the township has roughly $9 million in
cash, $8.2 million invested, $153,000 in
EMS transportation and $481,000 in primary
checking.
He also mentioned that the township
received the Homestead and Rollback Tax
collection from the state.
Trustee Dave Burris asked how much
the township is spending in a pay period.
“We are spending between $1.5 and $2
million a month,” Grossman replied.
Burris said with the amount the township
is spending, he worried the positive
cash balance of $9 million would not last
long.
In other township news, Fire Chief
Randy Little said the number of transports
of COVID-19 patients has gone down.
around the southwest
minutes and should answer the prompt “In
20 years, what would you like your future
self to remember about 2020?”
All graduating high school seniors who
live in the listed counties are encouraged to
submit a video by June 30. Entrants need
not be bank customers and no purchase is
necessary. Visit www.VCNBfamily.me and
Public health concern cancels the Ohio State Fair
The Ohio Expositions Commission
announced it will cancel the 2020 Ohio
State Fair, originally scheduled for July 29
- Aug. 9 in Columbus.
Members of the commission expressed
concern for public health, as well as the
financial feasibility of hosting a fair that
would adhere to social distancing protocols
and its impact on the long-term viability of
the Ohio State Fair.
“After careful thought and deliberation,
we have decided to cancel the Ohio State
Pet Corner
Pets of the week
Fair. Knowing how easily the virus spreads
in large groups, we believe it is the safest
path forward for the health and safety of
all Ohioans,” said Andy Doehrel, chair of
the Ohio Expositions Commission. “The
financial ramifications of hosting a
reduced-capacity fair would be too great
and we need to protect the Ohio State Fair
for future generations.”
“Our first priority is the safety of the
in the Ohio State Fair each year. While this
to be on the lookout for a surge of
calls and email phishing attempts about
In Entertainment
Performances make “e Lovebirds” funny and enjoyable
There are an untold number of movies
that have little to no premise.
Traditionally, they are more often found in
the science fiction or comedic realms but
they can sometimes be discovered in ones
that go on to garner critical acclaim and
win countless industry awards.
For the most part, these films can be forgiven
for its missing, meandering or convoluted
logic, but they have to have an off-setting
factor that makes it watchable, if not
downright enjoyable.
“The Lovebirds” is one of these films. It
has a thin plot that unravels and veers into
slapstick territory but it also has two
sparkling leads that make the film watchable,
if not downright enjoyable.
Just a few years prior to the film’s
release, Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae
were not on Hollywood’s radar as a leading
man or lady. They would get bit parts here
and there but no studio was really willing
to give them a chance to break out in their
own vehicle. Then they did what older
actresses have to do in order to be seen:
produce their own projects and cast themselves
in the main role.
For Rae, her mainstream breakout was
in 2016 when the television show
“Insecure” started to air on HBO. And as
for Nanjiani, his came the following year
with “The Big Sick,” a loose retelling of his
relationship with his now wife who was
gravely ill at the time.
Since then, the two have been proving
that they do have that factor that can draw
in a crowd and “The Lovebirds” proves that
point as it is currently the most watched
streaming movie. The film itself, which is a
romantic comedy/action adventure hybrid,
is not that great but the improvisational
skills and the nuanced facial expressions of
this comedic duo propel even the dullest
moments forward. If it were not for the
presence of these two and their fun chemistry,
“The Lovebirds” would not have been
such an entertaining escape.
In the film, Nanjiani and Rae portray
Jibran and Leilani, a long-term couple who
are privately mulling whether to go their
separate ways. Like all couples, we see
them at their first blush of love — the flirting,
their laughter at the smallest quips,
and their joking compliments — and then it
flashes forward to the blush of utter annoyance.
After four years together, they are arguing
about the smallest things; the time it
takes to get ready, social media usage,
secretive work projects and whether or not
they could win ‘The Amazing Race.’ The
latter argument seems to be their breaking
point and, as they are driving to attend the
dinner party of a recently engaged friend,
decide it is time to end their relationship.
Before the sheer awkwardness and reality
of the moment can fully sink in,
Nanjiani accidentally hits a cyclist with his
car. While checking on the slightly injured
but otherwise alert biker, their vehicle is
commandeered by a police officer who proceeds
to chase the cyclist down and run him
over.
Believing that they will be the prime
suspects in this crime — Leilani does not
trust that the cops will buy their story as
she is black and he is Pakistani with “a
murderous beard and murderous brows” —
they decide that they will have to solve this
mystery themselves despite having no
experience whatsoever.
Following the clues laid out in the bicyclists’
phone, the two uncover a dark plot
that takes them through the underbelly of
the wealthiest in New Orleans and puts
them into scenes right out of Stanley
Kubrick’s bizarre film “Eyes Wide Shut.”
Now, with the cops and an entire secret
society on their tails, the recently broken
up couple have to try to put aside their
petty arguments and simmering annoyances
in order to save each other’s life.
The script, written by Aaron Abrams
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
and Brendan Gall,
is easily the weakest
point of the
movie as it struggles
to advance and
explain an already
thin premise: Based
on the plot alone, the viewer isn’t excepting
much in the way of realism but it didn’t
help that the writing team just completely
drops any notion of following threads near
the end.
As stated above, what saves “The
Lovebirds” from the script is Nanjiani and
Rae, who improvise most of their lines and
add subtle expressions of longing and
loathing as they portray a couple on the
brink. It is their chemistry, skill, talent
and personalities that make this movie one
to catch on Netflix despite its weak premise
and follow through. Grade: B-
