Comments by Gwen:
This image has impact, great lighting makes for no distractions.
The image is crisp and clear where it needs to be for maximum focus on
centre of interest.
The red, gold and black colour works to perfection for maximum effect.
Framing and composition works well.

EDI: 02 Resolution & File Size: 1033 x 1920 - 834KB
Points and any Award: 11/15
Comments by Gwen:
The monotone medium suits this image, I like the gritty, grainy
appearance as it lends itself so well to the subject.
The bottom of the image could be a little more defined, as it seems to be
a bit hazy.
I keep getting the feeling that I would like more room in the image for the
hook of the crane to be able to swing around into.

Good clean image, colour and clarity are good.
Definitely meets the Subject criteria.
Horizon is pretty good, room for the bucket to move
forward framing and structure of the image is also good.
Good capture.

Title: Tending the Pitt Oil Engine
EDI: 04 Resolution & File Size: 1620 x 1080 – 2MB
Points and any Award: 12/15
Comments by Gwen:
Good clean story telling image. We have the concentration on
the face of the guy lovingly tending his pride and joy, motion
blur of the fly wheel. I am still in two minds as to the image
being cropped too tight. My centre of interest is in the guy’s
face, whereas for me I would like to see more of the wheel
action and machine.
Clarity, lighting and colour are good. Good capture.

Title: The Lanz Bulldog and Jimmy
EDI: 05 Resolution & File Size: 1080 x 1080 - 933KB
Points and any Award: 13/15
Comments by Gwen:
Like the monotone application, the image has to stand on it’s own by telling it’s
story rather than relying on the impact of colour. The composition fits the set
subject so well, with a little bit of humour chucked in, Lanz Bulldog with a Bulldog
of a man taking control of the beast.
Structure and framing are good. There is a lot happening in the background with
the trees and crowd, but the image is bold enough to stand clear and centre of
the image.

EDI: 06 Resolution & File Size: 1620 x 1080 – 1.8MB
Points and any Award: 14/15
Comments by Gwen:
Interesting use of duotone to this image to make it stand apart. I
really like the application and I think that the maker has really
pulled off turning a bit of unsexy machinery into something rather
attractive. I could see this image gracing the walls of a Mining
Magnates Boardroom anywhere in the world.
It has foreground, middle ground and background, the use of
colour in the background gives the image depth. Very creative, and
has impact and originality.

Comments by Gwen:
Another good presentation well within the set subject. it is a clean
image, with leading lines from 1 st to last vehicle. Colour balance is
rich and warm. Tells a story of times gone by, framing is very good, as
it keeps you within the subject matter. However, I am not sure where
the centre of focus is, so I keep looking for something to hold my eye.

A very clean minimalistic image that works so well. The monotone
application is perfect. Image is clean, has a good level of detail, the lighting is
perfect, and it attracts and holds my attention.
Well executed image.
I am sure that every Baby Boomer has memories of the old Singer that graced
just about every home in the 50’s and 60’s.

Comments by Gwen:
An interesting subject, the image is soft in quality and colour.
Centre of focus and level of detail is a little hard for me to find.
Not sure that the blur top and bottom help me find something
to hold me eye. I keep wanting to focus on the wheel hub, but
when I try to look into it for detail, I find it too soft.

Definitely meets the set subject. Image is soft and colour a bit
flat, however, that could be a dust cloud causing this effect. It
is very tightly framed giving the machine no space to move
into. I like the motion of the dirt tipping from the bucket. I am
struggling to find a the focal point for the centre of interest.

Who says machinery cant be sexy!
The angular lines keep leading the eye to the dial with for me is the centre of attraction.
The appeal in this images is the simplicity, originality and perfect framing.

A great image that handles the set subject especially well. It tells a great story.
Colour and clarity of the centre of focus is spot on, and then leads your eye out to

Framing is perfect, the use of the rule of 3rds enhances the image.
This image has real audience appeal and impact.

EDI: 14 Resolution & File Size: 1611 x 1080 - 831KB
Points and any Award: 12/15
Comments by Gwen:
A good image, although cropped very tight. Think that the image may have worked better if we
had some of the front wheel and perhaps the foot plat in the image. For me it looks like the front
has no visible means of support.
The level of detail has clarity and good colour tones.
The top end of the image becomes a bit cluttered and distracting. Would have been good if the
stuff on the seat was not there and the hand of the person in the side care was cloned out. But I
know that we do not always get what we want when taking photos on the fly.

A very clean and Uncluttered minimalistic image. I really
like how it has been handled. The cropping is tight, but it
works. The image is a little soft, but again I think it works
with this subject matter.
Bit of a dead spot under the front bumper.

Clean image and uncluttered image, colour is good.
The Clarity of the centre of attention, being the clock face is
clear which makes my eye stop here.
Not that phased by the dead spot under the dash and it might
work well with a tighter crop.
Reflections in the chrome work have been handled well.

Title: Ice Breaker
EDI: 17 Resolution & File Size: 1350 x 1080 – 1.6MB
Points and any Award: 10/15
Comments by Gwen:
A very busy image with a lot going on. Good human interest story being told, once we find
the focal point the Ice Breaker!
Image has foreground that due to its bold colour, takes over your eye first, then middle
ground is our subject matter is, gets lost a little as the eye then goes to the Pink shirt, then to
the ice, and finally to the machine!
We then get lost in the background clutter. This image may have worked better from a
different angle, but I think that this was not possible.
The image is technically good with the centre distance being clear, but overwhelmed by the
red trays of fish in the for ground.

Comments by Gwen:
This is a powerful image! I struggle with it fitting well into the set subject of ‘Machinery’.
Having said that, I find this a beautiful use of mono, excellent use of the rule of thirds, lighting
effects are well executed. Framing is well thought out. Very creative.
It holds my attention, the composition is perfect. It has for me, wow factor and impact.
Such a sensual image. I struggle to score this as set subject. I have scored this high for
technicality, composition, presentation, creativity and framing, but have pinged points off as I feel
it is not technically a machine.
I will take the Clubs instruction on this if necessary to re-score.

An interesting image.
I immediately see this fencing spool as your main element. However, I am looking
for a focal point but my eyes wander around to the sides and I get distracted with
the things around the perimeter of the image.
Maybe if it was taken at a different angle or even cropped down onto one
component, or even trying to incorporate the rule of thirds might give this image a
pop.
Sometimes less is more.

The image is bold in colour and tightly cropped. The maker has taken a soft approach with the
image.
The blur in the foreground on the tractor grill gives emphasis on the middle ground of the subject.
Need to watch the light and flare on the top of the bonnet as it can be an eye stealer from the
focal point of the image.

An image with no wasted space, very clean with great clarity. Reflections in the chrome have
been handled well.
Colour and tonal range has been handled well, as has the light.
Like the use of the leading lines of the wire spokes that brings your eye immediately to the centre
or hub and the brand name.

A very moody image with a lot happening in the foreground. So much so that I am a little distracted by
them.
Not sure if it is my copy of the image, but I feel the image could have a little more clarity and use of lights
and darks, to really put emphasis on the subject and to define the focal point of the image. Or another
approach could be to go for a total silhouette.
Many leading lines in this image, some leading to the left or the right, others straight up and also crossing
over each other.
Perhaps try to make the skyline a little less cluttered to bring the focus back into one or two points.

I like the colour application that has been given to this image, it gives it look
of an old engine house from a century ago.
The side lighting has added to the effect. Certainly fits the subject matter,

happening within the image it works well.

Definitely some shapes and lines happening in this image.
Very clean, and uncluttered image, I think that it works because of the interesting
shapes.
It fits the subject matter, could you crop it any differently, and if you did would it
enhance the image. Maybe a little of the foreground or even up to the end of the
concrete would make the focus more on the shapes and would probably work well.

well, and I do not think having the second hand in the image would have enhanced it.

Clean image, tightly cropped. Fits the subject matter. Has an element of humour. It took me a little time to
get this. I am thinking that perhaps a little less cropping on the top to show more of the tree may have
given it a bit more humour effect.
I feel that there is a lot more is a lot of punch and texture left on the table with this image. Some tweaking
to sharpen to bring out the detail and textures of the rust, and warmth to the colours would really make it
pop.

Clean, simple and uncluttered image that works a treat.

enhance the image?

A very nice image which tells a story. Like the way the maker has handled the colour, soft warm
colour of light above the wheel, balance the colour of the timber.
The grinding wheel is the focus of the image, when then leads your eye back to the bags of flour in
the background. Again like the shearing shed image, you feel inside the image when you look at the

The colour clarity and level of detail are well executed.
Not only do we have fitting subject matter, but we have
