originated in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a
“trilogy” of five books that sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime
and generated a television series, several stage plays, comics,
a video game, and in 2005 a feature film. Adams contribution to UK
radio is commemorated in The Radio Academy’s Hall of Fame.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the first of six books in the
three months.
The namesake of the novel is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,
a fictional guide book for hitchhikers (inspired by the Hitch-hiker’s
Guide to Europe) written in the form of an encyclopedia.
Medical Laboratory Technicians in High Demand
Elizabeth City, NC – While 2020 has brought on a
pandemic crisis that has our health care communities
working tirelessly to help those affected, it has also
presented the need for positions in the health care field
whose response is not on the front lines. The Medical
Laboratory Technology (MLT) program at College of The
Albemarle (COA) gives students an opportunity to begin
a career in health care behind the scenes to deliver critical
lab results in medical facilities.
Medical laboratory technicians have been thrust into
the spotlight amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. With the
around-the-clock testing of the virus across the globe,
technicians and technologists are responsible for ensuring
accurate readings of test results to aid physicians in
their diagnoses. Medical lab technicians are employed
by a number of health care facilities including hospitals,
state health departments, reference and forensic laboratories,
and pharmaceutical and biotech firms. Based on
the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, employment of
medical laboratory technicians and technologists has an
anticipated growth rate of 11% through 2028.*
The MLT program at COA can be completed in four
semesters. The program begins with the spring semester
and students enrolled take courses through summer, fall
and spring of the following year. Students in the program
graduate with an Associate in Applied Science degree
and are eligible to take the national certification exam
to become a certified medical laboratory technician. In
2019, COA graduates of the MLT program who sat for
The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science
Board of Certification exam received a 100% pass rate.
There are a number of four-year universities that graduates
may transfer to upon completion of the program,
and COA currently has an articulation agreement with
Old Dominion University.
“Medical laboratory professionals are a vital part of
any healthcare team. Many know very little about the
profession because we are often behind the scenes,
with limited exposure in the public eye,” explained Terri
Riddick, assistant professor/program coordinator of the
Phlebotomy and MLT programs at COA. “As the country
continues to battle the pandemic of 2020, requiring more
testing, these trained professionals are in demand. COA
graduates have a historical employment rate of 100%
within six months of graduating; most students have jobs
secured before graduation.”
The deadline to apply for the MLT program at COA is
October 15, 2020. For questions, contact Christopher
Robertson, director of Health Sciences Wellness Programs
Admissions/Advisement, at chris_robertson37@
On a bittersweet note, I want to take this opportunity
to thank Trinity Higinbotham for her service to
the Chamber over the past two years. Trinity took
over the role of Events and Marketing Manager in
August 2018, and she has expanded and magnified
the position. She’s been a tremendous asset
to our organization and our community; and while
we are excited for the new opportunities for her
family, we will truly miss her. Trinity’s last day
with us will be June 12, and I hope you will take
a moment between now and then to thank her for
her helpfulness. I’m pleased to announce that
our newly hired Events and Marketing Manager,
Darlene Tighe, will begin on June 1. Darlene is
skilled in event planning, marketing, and photography,
Manage Symptoms of Anxiety with Therapeutic Massage
We all experience anxiety at different times in
our lives, but for some, it can be a debilitating
condition. People with anxiety disorders, those feelings
never go away. It can begin to interfere with work, relationships
with others, and even the ability to perform
necessary activities of daily living.
Massage is an excellent therapy in managing anxiety
proven to assist with two of the most significant symptoms
of anxiety, sleep disturbances and insomnia, and
pain from muscle tension.
Sleep is a critical function, and when we do not sleep
deep enough or long enough, we begin to lose our
ability to think straight and start to feel anxiety and
depression. Massage improves the ability to fall asleep
and the quality of sleep, therefore, reducing the overall
symptoms of anxiety.
Massage therapy acts to increase circulation and bring
fresh oxygen precious blood back to the tissues.
It is especially useful in reducing muscle tension and
pain. Massage has demonstrated post-exercise recovery
and helping to prevent soreness. The same benefit
seems to transfer to those with muscle tension from
chronic tension brought on by emotional upset.
When we achieve better sleep, our bodies and our
minds can repair and regenerate, and when we have a
reduction in pain from muscle tension, we can experience
an overall sense of calm and relaxation.
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
As most of my readers are aware, I’m a former meat
inspector and spent much of my career in the meat
and poultry plants currently in the spotlight. I specialized
in plant sanitation and worked in meat and poultry
plants from “mom and pop” , to massive plants with
thousands of employees that operated 24 hours. Consequently,
I’m very concerned with the current events.
As a inspector, we used a publication called the “U.S.
Meat and Poultry Inspection Manual” , which is an
operations guideline providing the requirements for all
USDA meat and poultry plants. The requirements state
that all plants SHALL be cleaned and sanitized* after
every shift.
I spent many years in the operational, regulatory and
rule making part of food manufacturing. So, this is
personal.
Here is my analysis: I think it’s reasonable to assume
that food processing plants are adhering to USDA
requirements. The worker’s street clothes are never exposed
in the refrigerated plants. So, what is the cause
of the outbreaks?
Warren Green can be reached
at warreng9241@hotmail.com
wage, for eight hours. What’s the chances that they
won’t get sick?
That brings us back to my Medicare for all mantra. I believe
Medicare is the most efficient healthcare system
in existence, and should be seriously explored without
political consideration.
There was an exciting FDA press release approving
CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic
repeats) technology to diagnose Covid-19.
CRISPR, or gene editing is relatively new, so here’s an
update. The technology was first employed in 2010.
The technology involves using molecular tools to make
specific changes in the DNA of cells.
Finally, I’m scheduled for my scans within the next few
days. This time it will be PET/CT F18 AXUMIN. We
are trying to determine the cause of my rising PSA’s
(prostate specific antigens) and where it is emanating
from, since my prostate was removed. I’ll report in my
next column..

The CDC suggests that sociocultural and economic
challenges are significant. Many workers live in crowded
multi generational settings and share transportation
to and from work since many of the factory processing
plants are in rural areas. The implication is that the
virus originated outside the facility. I agree. The CDC is
also suggesting that Covid-19 might be permanent and
endemic like the common cold which is a corona virus.
That segues into my advocacy, which has always been
healthcare. I’ve always thought it nonsensical that the
people who handle our food, who are at the low end of
the economical ladder, can’t afford to go to the doctor.
Which means they can’t afford to get sick. So they work
in a damp, cold environment, for less than a living
Stay safe, stay diligent, don’t forget your sunshine, and
never forget food is medicine.
“I love deadlines. I love the
whooshing noise they make
as they go by.”
N o r t h e a s t e r n
SPCA
North Carolina, Inc.
Recently, a friend of mine found a puppy on the
side of the road. Emaciated, tick and flea infested,
wormy but seemingly healthy. Tender hearted animal
lovers, with a companion dog at home, they knew they
could not leave this little one to fend for herself any
longer. They bundled her into their car and immediately
took her to the vet for a check-up. With a clean bill of
health, they decided to keep her as part of their family.
Their question to me was how does a four- month- old
helpless puppy end up abandoned and alone?
Sadly, there are several possibilities and none of them
put human beings in a positive light. The most common
scenario is that the puppy, as well as her litter-mates,
may have been dumped in the nearby woods. Another
possibility, equally disturbing is that the mother was
discarded and gave birth in the wild. For this puppy
to have been on her own for four months is difficult to
comprehend but it happens more than we like to know.
When dogs roam away from their homes, they will use
their keen sense of smell to hopefully find their way
back. However, when a dog has been abandoned, it will
usually stay in the area where it was discarded for two
reasons: It has no tracks to follow home or it’s waiting
for the owner to return.
Unless rescued and brought to safety, many of these
animals will not make it in the wild. For them, their fates
are sealed with the disappearing taillights.
We have domesticated these animals and they rely on
humans for their survival. The unconscionable decision
to discard helpless animals is morally wrong, inhumane
and illegal.
By: Kim Parrish, Board of Directors,
SPCA of Northeastern NC
There are three open admission animal shelters in our
surrounding area. They provide a safe place to relinquish
animals with no questions asked and no judgment.
When a haven for the unwanted is so convenient, there
is no reason to discard any domesticated animal on the
side of the road.
Be responsible. Relinquish your unwanted animals to
the local shelter. At least they will be protected, fed,
loved and cared for. More importantly, they will be given
a chance to find a good life with someone who will love
them. It’s the right thing to do.
Barking Up the Wrong Herb
by: Coy Domecq
It is often said ignorance is bliss. That is definitely
not the case when it comes to foraged food plants.
There is a local plant, supposedly attractive to dogs
and once used to repel ticks and fleas in kennels, with
the common name fennel but more specifically dog fennel.
Herein lies the danger of categorically associating
one plant common reference with another like sounding
name. The rub is one plant of the same or similar name
may be fine for human consumption while the other can
have disastrous health effects. The edible fennel (Foeniculum
vulgare) is a member of the carrot family while
dog fennel (Eupatorium capillifolium), a member of the
sunflower family and native to southern and eastern
North America, contains pyrrolizidine. Pyrrolizidine is an
alkaloid. Not all alkaloids are equally harmful (onions
have small amounts of alkaloids but you would be
hard-pressed to die from onion alkaloid overdose) but
some alkaloids are detrimental in concentrations as low
as 0.001%. The target organ is primarily the liver. That
brings us back to dog fennel. Unfortunately, it looks
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
FACTS ABOUT MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS
Health insurance use to be not very complicated 30
-40 years ago. If you worked, your boss carried the
insurance for you, you paid a little premium and all was
good, mostly!! Some people, even back then did not work,
so no insurance.. some people could not afford the coverage..some
people could not get coverage for pre-existing
ailments .. But for most people, it was all good!! Then as
we got older and our health slowly got worse, premiums
went up, people and business could not afford to insure
their workers..But, people still needed coverage and have
it affordable.. Finally, we start getting near retirement age
(65), and for most people , they could breathe a sigh of relief
because now they are able to get MEDICARE!! Socialized
health insurance for those 65 +.. It is not the end of their
problems, but it cures most of their fears!! Since the late
1960’s it has been around and it has been a life saver for
many people, including myself and my wife before she died..
But since it only pays some to most of hospital and doctors
bills, people need a secondary form of help, of coverage and
that is where a SUPPLEMENT comes in.. Like the name
says, it is secondary to medicare..if I tried to explain every
little benefit here, it would take 4 articles to explain all.. and I
will do that later.. Here are just a few facts you, your parents
or grandparents need to understand..
First, it is guaranteed that they can get the coverage, no
matter what their health is.. but you must file with SOCIAL
Jakes Outdoor Adventures
have been the recipient of several rods and reels
I that people have handed down to me over the years.
These are not just rods to me; they are also holders of
memories of the people that gave them to me. Recently
I was given a rod and reel by the widow of one of
the Outer Banks Anglers Club members who passed
away. Her husband was Reynolds “Reyn” Smith Jr., who
passed away last September. Mrs. Smith said she knew
her husband would want me to have it. There is a story
behind this rod and reel that began many years back
when I was a freshman in high school, and I attended
the annual Outer Banks Anglers Club Award Banquet.
At every banquet there is a Rod and Reel Combo that
is raffled and the number is drawn at the end of the
evening. My Dad bought me tickets that night, and I
really wanted to win that rod and reel. However fate was
not with me that night, and Mr. Smith was the winner of
the rod and reel. Mrs. Smith said she remembered me
coming up to her and her husband and me admiring the
rod and reel. While I was disappointed I didn’t win it, I
was glad someone won it who shared the same passion
for fishing as I did.
As fate would have it, this would not be the last time I
saw this rod and reel. My Dad called me at school in Raleigh
and said he had a surprise for me. He told me that
he was contacted by Mrs. Mary Smith who was coming
down from New Jersey to pack all the things in their condo
in Manteo because she was selling it. She told Dad
she had something she wanted me to have. He met her
at her condo and she gave him the rod and reel along
with a nice note for me. Later that week when I arrived
home, Dad presented me with the letter from Mrs. Smith
SECURITY office 3 months before you turn 65 and file to get
your social security.. Your SUPPLEMENT coverage is guaranteed
as long as you apply to a regular company that sells
Medicare Supplements.. You can apply with most companys
three (3) months before you turn 65, up to three (3) months
after..GUARANTEED YOU WILL BE ACCEPTED...If you
wait after that, then you have to answer health questions
and may not get full coverage..
Since there are limitations on the regular medicare plans,
SUPPLEMENT plans have up to 10 different plans you can
choose from, depending on what benefits you need and can
afford..Under Medicare, PART A is hospitalization, PART B is
doctors, surgeons and other benefits!! You pay about $105
per month for PART B coverage and that usually comes out
of your social security check each month before you receive
it.. Of all the plans you have to choose from PLAN F and
PLAN G are the most beneficial plans.. Both of these plans
pays the hospital and doctors deductible for each benefit
period--(((A BENEFIT PERIOD IS NOT A CALENDAR YEAR
OR A PERIOD THAT RUNS FROM ONE YEAR INTO AN-
OTHER-- IT IS THE FIRST DAY YOU RECEIVE SERVICE
AS AN IMPATIENT IN A HOSPITAL AND ENDS AFTER
YOU HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AND HAVE
NOT RECEIVED SKILLED CARE IN ANY OTHER FACILITY
FOR 60 DAYS IN A ROW))).. So, it is possible to have two
or three BENEFIT PERIODS in one calendar year!!! And
and then the rod and reel. I remembered it as soon as I
saw it, and I was so honored to be entrusted with it. Everytime
I use that rod and reel, I will have the memory of
Mr. Smith and how he loved and enjoyed fishing. As you
see, a piece of fishing equipment can be more than just
that-- it can be the gateway to a person’s memories.
This national situation we have been dealing with over
the past few months has altered the way we all live. One
thing that has been a constant is that we are experiencing
things we have never experienced before. One of
the annual events we usually have on the Outer Banks
is the Annual Fritz Boyden Youth Fishing Tournament.
This year was going to be the 50th anniversary of the
tournament but that will have to wait until next year. Let
us all hope we can get outside and get back to fishing
very soon!
each BENEFIT PERIOD starts over again, with new deductibles,
which the SUPPLEMENT will pay again!! The first 60
days in the hospital, MEDICARE PAYS FOR,all but $1340
per day , from the 61st to 90th day, MEDICARE PAYS ALL
BUT $335 per day, THE SUPPLEMENT PAYS ALL THESE
BILLS UNTIL THE END OF THE 90TH DAY PER BENE-
FIT PERIOD..There are many other benefits the two plans
co-share payments ( I will explain in later articles).. Another
benefit is if you need SKILLED NURSING CARE, MEDI-
CARE will pay for the first 20 days in a SKILLED HOME
ONLY!!, from the 21st day thru 100 days, they will pay all but
$167.50 per day...That is up to the patient to pay out of their
own pocket, or if they have a LONG TERM CARE PLAN to
help pick up the balance!! For all folks like you and me, this
is HARD to understand!! But, that is why I am here to help
you out, to understand this health mumbo-jumbo.
questions.. I have taught insurance classes at the
Dear Dr. Crime: Some of the stuff I read about abuse of
little girls, selling them for sex even, makes me want to
do my part to correct that mess. I have research skills,
but not in your field. Can you suggest a way I may help?
NC Professor.
Dear colleague: Yes. You should line up with others
around a grant proposal. Take a look at the Office of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
OJJDP-2020-18135. The goal of that grant is to prevent
or at least reduce victimization of girls who are vulnerable
to sex trafficking. To understand better what the true nature
of sexual assault is, see a girl’s personal description
at www.boredpanda.com/rape-explained-sexual-assault.
And discuss your ideas with the National Sexual Assault
Hotline at 1-800-656-4673. Call or email me about your
research plans. Note that research shows those sexually
assaulted very often have high rates of mental illness
for long periods of time (Lancet, Vol. 2, #9, p 654-665,
2018).
Dear Dr. Crime: What does sending crooks to prison do
to the rate of violent crime? Jesse James
Dear Jesse: Sure that is your name! About effects of
prison, see below. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Prisoners
in 2017 (NCJ 252156, BJS, April 2019),
NCJRS cites research showing that doubling the prison
population is associated with a 20-40 percent reduction
in crime. This issue is among the most important for us,
especially as we undergo such social chances as we see
now.
Dear Dr. Crime: Who should we vote for to best control
crime? Angry Wife
Dear Madam: I would not touch that question with a 10
foot pole.
Dear Dr. Crime: What is the most crime infested country
in the world? Kid in Class
Dear Kid: Pay attention to your teacher! And to answer
you, North Korea is reported to have the highest crime
rate . For details. See the website noted below and Do
your homework first !! (toptenscentral@gmail.com)
Dear Dr. Crime: With all the unemployment we face, I
must ask, is there a relationship between unemployment
rates and crime? Politician
Dear Leader: Yes, where property crime is the measure,
not so with violent crime. See V., A. (2020, March 22).
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
While the Chowanoke Reservation is located in Gates County,
Chowanoke territory had previously extended from the Blackwater
River in Virginia to as far south as Edenton. In fact, Edenton is
located in its namesake county, Chowan. There were many Chowanoke
villages that were established along the Chowan River which
primarily encompassed areas in Gates, Hertford, Bertie, and Chowan
Counties.
The Chowanoke played a significant role in establishing towns and
systems of local government in the Roanoke Chowanoke area by
providing a foundation for later growth. According to archaeologist Dr.
David Phelps, the Chowanoke Indians were described as a sedentary
people who had lived in the area for well over 800 years. He
based his conclusions on radiocarbon dating of artifacts and other
findings from various Chowanoke village sites. The Chowanoke had
thriving villages that had been established for hundreds of years prior
to colonization. Dr. Phelps believed that many towns that exist today
evolved from those villages. For example, the Chowanoke capital
was named Choanoac. This village evolved into present day Harrellsville.
Metocquuem is another known Chowanoke village that was once
located in an area of Bertie County known today as Merry Hill. This
village was situated along Salmon Creek, a tributary off the Chowan
River. Interestingly, this area has recently become an increasingly
popular site as archaeologist have recently uncovered artifacts that
display primary Algonquin influence and culture. Noting this as a
Chowanoke village site, they have also uncovered European artifacts
which date back to the 1500’s. This discovery has proposed exciting
theories surrounding findings from a site that also correlates with the
location of a questionable patch that was placed on a drawing that
John White himself had made of the Roanoke area in 1585. Could
this village have been the site of an English settlement that was incorporated
within and that has remained a mystery to this day? Many
seem to think so.
On Ears
By Claude Milot
I
find ears fascinating. They come in all sizes and
shapes. Elephants have huge ones, hounds floppy
ones, birds tiny ones. Even humans sport an interesting
variety. Some have long lobes, others none at all.
Some people have ears that stick out (like a taxi with
its doors open, as the saying goes). I’ve even known a
man who could flap either one at will. And then there’s
the question we seniors all ask ourselves: why do our
ears grow bigger as we age, while our other body parts
shrink?
I read somewhere that in colonial times some criminals
had their ears nailed to a post as punishment. I leave
it to the reader to imagine how they freed themselves
from such a predicament. Think Van Gogh.
Ear piercings have been around a long time. Otzi
the Iceman, who lived 5,000 years ago, had pierced
ears. So did Egyptian mummies. And just about every
civilization has pierced ears for decorative purposes.
Ours is no exception. Claire’s, an ear-piercing service,
holds the Guiness Book of Records for having pierced
85 million ears. That’s a lot of punctures.
It used to be that women only pierced earlobes, but
now they can go for the rook, helix, tragus, conch,
daith, and auricle (we all know what they are, right?),
as well as elaborate combinations. Creativity is all the
rage.
Traditionally, and with rare exceptions like pirates,
only women in this country wore earrings. Until now.
Grown men as well as boys now sport studs and rings.
Some even try to outdo each other with gauging, the
placing of ever-larger “gauges” in the ear lobe. One
of my grandsons tried gauging. I’m glad he stopped
before the point-of-no return, where the holes become
permanent and disfiguring.
For me, ears are meant to be functional, not decorative.
Unfortunately, my right ear has pretty much
ceased to function as designed. My wife insists I
should go for a hearing aid, but I refuse. There’s a
certain advantage to being deaf in one ear. I can “turn
a deaf ear” to criticism, pretend I didn’t hear a question
I prefer not to answer, or plead ignorance of requests to
do something I’d rather not do.
Fortunately, my wife, who sits in the shotgun seat when
I drive, has learned to scream quite audibly when I’m
about to run a red light or cross in front of oncoming
traffic. Thank goodness I still have one good ear.
Art in the Albemarle Area
As the school is coming to its close, albeit in a different
manner than we have experienced before,
and summer is about to begin. I hope you are making
preparations to try something new and different this
summer season. Usually we could have experienced
several art shows in our area and have been able to
get out and enjoy the beginning of the beach season.
I have been writing about letting yourself go and
enjoy viewing art and painting for pleasure. Please
allow me to explain another value to painting... help
in the healing of your spirit. Not that painting will cure
you of any diseases but the therapeutic value that
comes from painting especially in this time of social
distancing. I have been working on trying to use these
“healing” properties of art to help me through my period
of convalescence. Painting can do this for you also.
Let yourself go , put colors on canvas, and paint, paint,
paint.
What are your plans now that summer is here ? What
are your children doing over these months away from
virtual school? What will the new normal look like,
surely it will be different for us than before. Even while
our activities have changed there is always some form
of art that we can engage in, maybe not painting, but
art in some form. Allow me to make a suggestion....
try some form of crafting, some form of painting! If you
are perusing the internet there are virtual lessons and
classes for children and adults. The internet provides
numerous opportunities to enhance your own or your
by: Talmage Dunn
children’s artistic talents. I urge you to avail yourself of
these activities. I would suggest that you try water color
painting. Its a simple paint to use and the clean up is
much easier than oils and acrylics. Unless my observations
are wrong, many have already started with this
medium. I have been to the srt department in some
of the local “big box” stores and the paints and other
crafts have been pretty much bought up. Fear not they
are being restocked but I was surprised at how much
has been purchased.
Your goal this month is to put some colors on canvas,
on paper, or on a rock! Its amazing what doing that will
do for your psyche!
It is that time of year for summer for those of us that
are into making crafts to prepare fore that time when
craft fairs will be back in action after the quarantine
restrictions are lifted. This is an opportunity for picking
up materials for your artwork. It is also a great time to
get out of the house even if its only in your own yard
and look at some of those areas that will inspire you to
create, craft and paint!
Now is the time to try out those activities in art that
you have told yourself that you couldn’t do. It has been
said that the greatest painter that has ever lived hasn’t
been found is because he never tried. So try some art
Orthodox Christianity by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
America and Orthodoxy
This July 4th, Orthodox Churches in America will join with
all other Americans in thanking God for this free, beautiful
land.
Many Orthodox Churches, at the end of the Sunday morning
Divine Liturgy, will sing the picturesque hymn, “America the
Beautiful.”
The Orthodox community is truly thankful for its religious
freedom in America. Orthodox people have long experienced
oppression, second-class citizenship at best, and severe
restrictions upon its religious life and activities. Turkey, China,
and Saudi Arabia are some of the worst places for Orthodox
Christians to live. In fact, just “living” is doubtful in those oppressive
regimes.
But in America there has only been freedom. Admittedly,
Orthodoxy seems “odd” to the history of American Christianity.
There are icons and incense, unchanging liturgy and
sacraments, priests (like myself) who wear strange vestments
straight from the Middle Ages.
We are fortunate to live in a democracy, where the people are
the rightful “rulers” of the State. Thus, we will never say that
God chooses a President. Our fellow Orthodox in England will
pray for the Queen. Our fellow Orthodox in Russia will pray for
Putin, who is the undisputed ruler in that nation.
But thank God, in a democracy, we pray generically for “all civil
authorities,” as they represent the people in a democratic republic.
We pray that there will be peace in our land and peace
for America amongst the nations. We pray that there will be
justice and fairness for all, and that the poor will be cared for,
and that the powerless will be protected.
We Orthodox rejoice that America cherishes these ideals --
ideals that we share, for which we are thankful and hopeful.
In all seriousness, with a long experience of oppression under
dictators and martial law, we pray in gratitude, “God Bless
America!”
“A learning experience
is one of those things
that says, ‘You know
that thing you just did?
Don’t do that.”
― Douglas Adams
Still, Orthodoxy has found breathing room here in the USA.
And for that we are thankful.
And in thanksgiving, we pray for the United States. In Orthodox
doctrine, we do not say that any single style of government
is God’s Will. We have lived under Emperors and Tsars.
Unfortunately, we have endured Caliphs and Pashas, Politburos
and dictators and demagogues.
Museum of the Albemarle
Shad Boats
By Wanda Lassiter, Curator, Museum of the Albemarle
The shad boat became North Carolina’s official state historical boat on
June 15, 1987. The boat is a symbol of the maritime heritage of our
region, a region that is composed of half land and half water. Named for the
shad fish, it is known for its maneuverability and versatility in shallow waters.
Geoge Washinton Creef, Sr., considered the original designer of the shad
boat, carved and produced kunners, split-log canoes. In the 1870s, in his
boat building workshop on Roanoke Island, he began using a combination of
framed plank construction with the dugout log kunner-style keel to produce
larger boats to support the growing commercial fishing business. This combination
of styles yielded the “shad boat.”
Several museums across North Carolina display shad boats including the
North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and the Museum of the Albemarle.
The restored 1904 shad boat suspended from the lobby at the
Museum of the Albemarle was built by Alvery (or Alvirah) Bell Wright (1869-
1951). It measures 28 feet long and 7½ feet wide and used the distinctive
Carolina rig of a sprit mainsail, sprit topsail, and a jib. Alvery Wright, a fourth
generation boat builder from Camden County, was also known for his decoy
carvings.
The Alvery Wright shad boat, made of Atlantic white cedar (juniper) and white
oak, was built as a sailboat, later converted to gasoline and eventually to
diesel. The Museum of the Albemarle acquired the boat from members of
the Wright family in 1994 and the eight-year restoration process began in
1997. Under the direction of Enno Reckendorf, an experienced wooden boat
builder, sailor, and retired director of the Norfolk School of Boatbuilding, the
restoration involved members of MOA’s staff as well as numerous volunteers.
Our affiliate receives the majority of its funding
from two sources: homeowner payments and our
Several of our homeowners work in restaurants
and hospitality and are struggling financially right
now which impacts their ability to pay their mortgage.
We will work with them so they can pay
their mortgage over time but we are losing that
income right now which is used for construction
and rehab work that we are doing on 5th Street.
Our store has been closed for two months at
the direction of Habitat for Humanity International.
During that time, we chose to keep our
employees on staff to clean our store. While we
are receiving PPP funding to cover salaries, we
have lost income from the sales that the store
generates. We are preparing to re-open following
To help affiliates meet financial challenges they
face right now, Habitat for Humanity International
has launched a fundraising program: Homes,
You can donate through our website, https://
North Carolina Bow Hunters Association
by: Talmage Dunn
Turkey season for this year is pretty much over and
summer heat is about to be upon us. I hope everyone
has had the opportunity to get out and do a little
target practice. With all the social distancing and rain
we have had of late getting outside to shoot has been a
real challenge, of course, that happens during hunting
season also. Sometimes “rainy” day practice has
its advantages and it falls within the social distancing
guidelines. It is important to know and understand how
the weather affects your archery equipment.
I believe this would be a prime opportunity to review
what noted archer Fred Bear had to to say reminding
us about his “10 commandments of Deer hunting.” He
wrote the following:
1. Don’t step on anything you can step over.
2. Don’t look for deer, look for movement, (and remember,,,,
its what the deer look for also!)
3. Always approach from downwind, in the cool of the
day, move uphill, in the heat of the day, move downhill.
4. The best camouflage pattern is called, “Sit down
and be quiet!” Remember, your forefathers hunted deer
in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second!
5. Take only the gear into the field that allows you to
hunt longer, harder, and smarter.
6. A rainstorm isn’t a reason to quit the hunt.... its a
reason to stay!
7. Camouflage your appearance, your sound, and your
scent!
8. Be sure of your shot. Nothing is more expensive
than regret!
9. Hunt where the deer actually are … not where you’d
imagine them to be.
10. Next year’s hunt begins the minute this season’s
hunt ends.
The NCBA is always looking for new people to join
its membership ! If you haven’t considered being a
member... now is the time to make that step! Its a way
of keeping up with the bowhunting laws and regulations
for our state.
The NCBA has many opportunities for you to increase
your archery knowledge and hone your skills.
Check our website for more details.
Above all else, regardless of the bow you use...Practice,
Practice, Practice!! There is no substitute for it!!!
Respectfully submitted.
FRISCO NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM - Amazing Plants
Visitors to the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural
History Center often marvel at the innovative ways Native
Americans use plants. At a time when the world’s focus is on
health and healing, we get even more questions about natural
remedies. One of the “super stars” frequently overlooked is
abundant in eastern North Carolina—the common cattail!
The most amazing thing about cattails may be how many ways
they can be used. The roots can actually be ground into a
flour while the sticky sap found between the leaves is filled with
starch that makes an excellent thickener for liquids. If cooked
correctly, the shoots at the base of the leaf clusters are great in
salads as well.
it's an experience.
While the best known use of cattails may be as mats for sleeping
pads and longhouse coverings, their value for survival skills
is also important. The dried stalks make excellent arrow shafts
and can be used to provide tender for torches and fire. Stripped
cattail leaves can be used for cordage, and the green leaves
may even be woven into baskets. Examples of some of those
uses can be seen in the gallery at the Frisco Native American
museum that showcases the local natives of Hatteras Island.
The Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center
is located on Hatteras Island and is currently closed to the public
due to COVID-19 regulations. For more information, call 252-
Natives also recognized the medicinal properties cattails offer.
That same sticky starch at the base of the leaves makes an
excellent antiseptic and in an emergency can even be used as
a coagulant. In addition, pieces of fresh root are considered
soothing for irritations such as blisters, insect bites, and even
toothaches.
More Bang Bang For Your Buck Buck
I
’ve been cooking a lot of shrimp lately. I have a
freezer-full and it’s come in quite handy during
these Covid-times. As always, I’m thinking of new
ways to prepare shrimp and I’ve got one I think you’ll
enjoy – Bang Bang Shrimp.
It's not just another wave,
You might have seen restaurant dishes labeled bang
bang chicken or bang bang shrimp and wondered
what it is. Bang bang chicken is an internationally
popular Szechuan dish which has still retained
some of its original identity. The dish originated in
Hanyang, China, a city located at the confluence of
the Han and Yangtze Rivers. After the establishment
of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Hanyang
merged with the cities of Hankou and Wuchang to
form Wuhan. So, armed with that bit of history and
information, bang bang shrimp is truly a dish for our
times.
Hanyang had long been famed for its high-quality
chickens and in the early 1900s, Hanyang street
vendors sold chunks of chicken cloaked in a spicy
sauce as a snack on skewers. The snack was known
as “bang bang chicken” because of the wooden
clubs, or “bang,” they used to hammer the backs of
the cleaver blades through the meat to tenderize and
loosen the fibers for shredding. The word bàng also
means “stick,” so the name could have derived from
that also.
At any rate, I’m foregoing the bird, and going for the
shrimp in this dish. The shrimp will be lightly fried
and then draped in a spicy sauce with hints of salt,
sweet, sour, and tingling heat.
Rosie’s Bang Bang Shrimp
1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and de-tracted (That
black line running down the back is the digestive tract,
not a vein.)
Cover the shrimp with buttermilk and shake a tablespoon
or two of hot sauce (Texas Pete) over top. Stir
and let soak while you prepare the rest.
For the Bang Bang Sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sweet chili sauce
1 TB sriracha sauce
1 TB honey
1 TB rice vinegar
Mix all ingredients until smooth. Cover and refrigerate.
Prepare the shrimp coating:
1 cup corn starch
½ cup panko breadcrumbs
1 tsp granulated garlic
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly ground pepper
Mix all ingredients until well-combined.
Serving suggestions:
Pile shrimp on a bed of rice, add some steamed vegetables,
and pour on the sauce. Top with roasted peanuts
and sliced scallions.
Alternatively, you can go with a fried tortilla or puffy taco
with shredded cabbage, carrot, and bell pepper. Tuck
the fried shrimp inside and generously drizzle the sauce
over top.
Enjoy!
Drain shrimp, shaking off excess liquid, then toss in
coating mix, covering evenly.
In a deep frying pot, heat about 3 inches peanut oil to
375°. Fry shrimp in batches, 6-8 at a time, depending
on size of pot, until golden brown – about 1 minute.
Drain.

The time-travel ad
Reprinted with permissions from Backwoods Home Magazine Issue #125 • September/October, 2010
By John Silveira
It’s become a minor Internet phenomenon. The ad reads:
WANTED: Somebody to go back in time with me. This
is not a joke. P.O. Box 322, Oakview, CA 93022. You’ll
get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons.
Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once
before.
It’s also been read by Jay Leno on his late night TV show,
on National Public Radio more than once (including Car
Talk), on craigslist.org (sans the P.O. box), it’s been printed
on T-shirts, discussed on the liberal website democraticunderground.org,
it’s been the subject of conversation in several
online forums, and very similar wording has been used
in some computer games. There’s even a ghost hunter,
Richard Senate, a resident of Oakview, who’s looking for the
author. On his website he says the ad appeared in a local
paper in 2004. He states “Some have even walked the town
of Oak View seeking…evidence of the traveler…” It keeps
popping up.
Where did it come from? Who is the mysterious author?
What was his intent?
Actually, it first appeared on page 92 of the Sept/Oct 1997
issue of BHM—and I wrote it.
Why’d I write it? What was my motive?
In the early days of Backwoods Home Magazine, the publisher,
Dave Duffy, used fillers when the classified ad pages
came up short. He’d ask me to come up with jokes or riddles.
I often did. Some were original, some not. One night,
desperate to wrap up the classifieds, he asked, “John, give
me a couple of jokes.” It’s not easy to do that on demand. I
sighed and asked, “How about I place a couple of ads—for
free?” He said, “Sure.”
So, I came up with two. One was a personal—I was looking
for a girlfriend. The other was the time travel ad. If you can
find that issue, and look on pages 92 and 93, you’ll see
both of my ads and they both use the same P.O. box. A few
astute readers caught it. But I didn’t dream the ad up that
night. It’s actually the opening lines to an unfinished novel
I started years ago. I let Dave use it, expecting three or
four responses from it and hoped for a few dozen from the
personal. Instead, I’ve received more than a thousand from
the time-travel ad, and maybe five from the personal—four
from women and one from a gay guy. I’m not kidding. And
the responses to the time travel ad never end.
Sometimes, the flow into my P.O. box is a mere trickle.
Other times, the box is stuffed. I think it’s the result of the
periodic appearance of the ad on the Internet and, as I said,
in other places over the years. It’s also been appropriated by
individuals who have either used the exact same or nearly
identical wording, except they’ve changed the P.O. box to
one of their own. Others have claimed the Oakview mailbox
belongs to them. Some guy with a bad mullet has run the ad
with his picture as if it’s his. But I’m the only one with a key
to the box.
Over the years, I’ve received responses from every state
and every continent, including Antarctica.
What have the people who’ve responded wanted? Most
seemed to have believed the ad. Several hundred, while
admitting maybe it was a hoax, hoped it wasn’t and wanted
to go back in time for the sheer adventure. Though pay was
offered, many of those said they’d do it for nothing. (Hell, I
would, too.)
Some letters came from guys who gave me a list of some
pretty sophisticated weapons they could bring along with
their credentials: black belts in martial arts, explosives expertise,
language skills, etc., along with assurances they can
pretty much take care of themselves. I believe ’em.
But many letters came from people who wanted me to correct
a past tragedy. Dozens, in prison, asked me to go back
in time and talk them out of committing the crime that put
them away. Others (and not a few) were from people who
begged me to go back and save a loved one from a tragic
death. Those letters were so heartbreaking I almost couldn’t
read them and I felt a certain amount of shame for not anticipating
the false hope I placed in so many hearts.
On the other hand, I also got letters from people who,
despite postal regulations, threatened me with either bodily
harm or death if the ad turned out to be a joke or a scam. I
guess it all balances out.
Several years ago, I even got a letter from someone on the
staff of the Jerry Springer Show asking me to appear on the
show. Friends asked if I was going to take him up on it. Are
you kidding? I’m not a good enough actor to pull that off.
But why did I use an Oakview P.O. box? (I now live in Oregon.)
I used to live in the Ojai Valley, just a few miles from
Oakview, and a P.O. box there was on my way out of the
Valley. My daughter, Meaghan, used to read them to me on
our long commute up I-5 to the magazine, about 800 miles
each way.
What’s happened to all the letters? I wish I still had every
one of them. For a while I kept hundreds of them in a big
box in the trunk of my Honda Civic. But when the trunk
leaked, they all got mildewed. I threw most of those away.
But I still have a few hundred left.
What lies in the future? Even though I’ve now revealed it
was just a joke, I expect the P.O. box will continue to receive
letters until the end of time. And, for all the writing I’ve done,
they are probably the only words I’ve written that will outlive
me. In the meantime, it’s 13 years later, and I still need a
girlfriend.
Why American Citizens Need Assault Weapons*
by Network President Marty Hayes, J.D.
day or two after the Newtown, CT mass murder at Sandy
A Hook Elementary School, I was having an online conversation
with one of my nephews, and he said he just couldn’t
see why anyone needed a weapon with a magazine that held
more than ten rounds. I made the usual arguments, but was
frustrated because social media discussions usually take
place in a sentence or two, not a 2,000-word treatise. I would
have liked to have had such a treatise with which to educate
him, so he could consider the rational arguments without all
the emotion of the day overriding the thought process.AR15
up
I suspect more than one or two of our members were in the
exact same situation in the days following the shooting, and
for this reason, I want to lead this month’s eJournal with
an opinion piece on this subject. If it helps clarify your own
thoughts on the subject, then I will be pleased. If you choose
to share this article with others, either through social media or
privately, that would also please me.
In the wake of a self-defense shooting involving a modern
semi-automatic rifle or pistol, you will undoubtedly have to
answer the same question if you are charged with a crime
along with that shooting. You should know how to answer the
question, “Why did you need to use an assault weapon, Mr.
Defendant?” So, let’s take a look at why American citizens
need modern semi-automatic weapons.
One of the overarching themes of the anti-gun movement
is that Americans simply do not need these types of weapons.
“Why does anyone need a high capacity assault rifle?”
After all, high capacity semi-automatic rifles are not used for
hunting or sporting purposes, just for killing humans. To which
I respond “exactly.”
There are two main reasons and many ancillary ones why a
ban on high-capacity, semi-automatic weapons is uncalled
for, unnecessary and also unwise. First, we must consider
the historical perspective of the Second Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution. The Second Amendment was added to the
Constitution as an assurance that Americans will never lack
the weaponry to fight against their own government, if that
government becomes tyrannical. Remember, in the late 1780s
the newly formed United States of America had just fought a
Part 1
bloody war against England and King George III’s tyrannical
government. In order to gain support for the formation of a
central government, the individual states required that the language
of the Second Amendment be included in the Constitution,
or they would not ratify the Constitution.
Of course, the citizens of the day needed to arm themselves
against tyrants with the very same weaponry used by the
tyrants. Remember that English rule had become over domineering,
leading to the revolutionary war to begin with. The
states resolved that no central government should have the
ability to enslave them or otherwise control their lives beyond
what they were willing to allow, because they could revolt
and take down that new government, too. Thomas Jefferson
probably put it best, when he said “The tree of liberty must
be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and
tyrants.” According to our founding fathers, the original, overarching
purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure
that American citizens always had the ability to overthrow the
existing government.
If you look at the history of the writing of the Constitution, it
is quite clear that the founding fathers meant for the citizenry
to be armed with the very same weaponry as government
had. In fact, Justice Antonin Scalia in his majority opinion of
the 2008 Supreme Court case District of Columbia v. Heller
(https://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/07-290.ZO.html) went
to considerable effort to outline this argument in his opinion.
Anyone owning a modern semi-automatic rifle or pistol needs
to read and study the opinion, so we have provided that link
for you.
Now, fast forward from 1780 to present day. Our current
military and law enforcement agencies employ high- capacity
semi-automatic handguns and AR-15 style rifles that are
the very same weapons as are being targeted for a ban, if
the Obama Administration has its way. In fact, most military
firearms also have select fire: full auto, three-shot burst or
semi-auto. This is how the M-4 rifle, which American citizens
cannot own unless first paying a high tax, and in some states
citizens cannot own M4s at all.
* Throughout this article, I use the term “modern semi- automatic rifle or pistol” to describe what others commonly call “assault
weapons.” “Assault weapon” has become a pejorative used primarily by those who are pushing a political agenda to
ban guns, and depending on their wishes, it can mean anything from a handgun, which holds more than seven rounds of
ammunition (as in New York), to rifles with a detachable magazine that can hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. While I
do understand that the term “assault weapon” is too broad to serve as an accurate descriptor, I use it in this article’s headline
to grab the reader’s attention. If it offends, I apologize.
‘Tidelands,’ by Phillipa Gregory. Phillipa is well
known for her many ‘Plantagenet and Tudor Novels’,
which are still popular today. In this book ‘Tidelands’,
the first in a new series called ‘Fairmile’; Gregory
deviates from her usual focus on historical figures to
shine a light on the plight of common women in 1640s
England. Alinor, a midwife with knowledge of herbal
remedies, is in difficult circumstances. Her fisherman
husband has been gone for months, and she must
care for herself and her two growing children during
a precarious time in England’s history. King Charles,
forced off his throne by Parliament, was banished
to the Isle of Wight. It’s also a period when a strong
woman on her own, like the beautiful Alinor who has
skills that others can’t understand, can easily be accused
of being a witch; the author cleverly plants such
seeds of suspicion throughout. At the open, Alinor
meets a handsome, young Catholic priest, a royals
champion with the means to help the king escape.
She helps the priest find a haven, and their ensuing
romance has devastating consequences for both.
History buffs and Gregory’s fans alike will be anticipating
Mecklenburg County, N.C. rebukes King George III
by: Tara Ross
I
n 1775, the Mecklenburg Resolves are adopted by
colonial leaders in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
State leaders would take a similar action when
they approved the Halifax Resolves, but that action was
still nearly a year away.
By contrast, Mecklenburg County leaders were ready to
act immediately. Their Resolves more or less told King
George III to take a flying leap!
All Royal commissions, the Resolves declared, “are
null and void.” Instead, all legislative and executive
power would be vested in the colonies’ own Provincial
Congresses.
Needless to say, the Royal Governor of North Carolina
was irate. He soon wrote London about the “horrid and
treasonable” action taken by the colonists.
The Mecklenburg Resolves (May 31) should not be
confused with the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence
(May 20). Historians dispute whether the May 20
Declaration ever occurred, because the text of the Declaration
was not discovered until many years after the
fact. Did the text represent an actual separate vote on
May 20? Or was it simply a later attempt to reconstruct,
from memory, what had happened on May 31?
The authenticity of the Declaration was being questioned
as early as 1819. On June 22 of that year, John
Adams wrote Thomas Jefferson about the Declaration,
which had just been published in a newspaper. “The
Genuine sense of America,” Adams wrote, “at that
moment was never so well expressed before nor since.”
Jefferson was unimpressed. He’d never heard of the
Mecklenburg Declaration and wrote: “[Y]ou seem to
think it genuine. I believe it spurious.”
To be fair, Jefferson was the author of the American
Declaration of Independence, so perhaps he was inclined
to disbelieve the story!?!
With or without the May 20 Declaration, the May 31
Resolves were valuable in their own right. Leaders
in Mecklenburg had just received news of the Battles
of Lexington and Concord, and they decided to take
action. The resolution they passed did not declare
independence outright, but it came close. The Resolves
suspended royal authority in Mecklenburg County,
stating that “all Laws and Commissions confirmed by,
or derived from the Authority of the King or Parliament,
are annulled and vacated . . . .” It affirmed colonial
authorities as the source of “all legislative and executive
Powers” and provided that such a situation was
to be continued until Parliament “resign its unjust and
arbitrary Pretentions with Respect to America.” The
Resolves concluded with provisions regarding arms for
war with Britain.
And, of course, the official American Declaration of
Independence would soon be unanimously approved by
all thirteen colonies.
The fight for independence was off to a good start!
Tara Ross is a mother, wife, writer, and retired lawyer. She is
and State (with Joseph C. Smith, Jr.), & We Elect A President:
“It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply
because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in.
However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there
must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number
divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so
the average population of all the planets in the Universe can
be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of
the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may
meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged
imagination.”
What Weimar Germany Teaches Us about Universal Basic Income
Massive government debt, sky-high unemployment, the
economy frozen, idle workers receiving payments from
the government. This might sound like COVID-19, but I am
actually talking about post-World War I Germany.
If your high school history teacher skipped this story, here’s
a bullet-point recap:
Germany lost World War I in 1918.
Great Britain and France punished Germany with huge
fines.
Germans resented the fines and defaulted on their payments.
France got fed up and in 1923 invaded Germany’s coal-rich
Ruhr valley to extract payments themselves.
Germans offered nonviolent resistance.
German coal miners refused to work for the French occupiers,
and the German government printed even more money
to pay the miners so they could feed themselves and their
families.
Fast-forward to 2020. Massive government debt: check.
Entire sectors of the economy frozen: check. Large portion
of population unable to work: check. Government giving
handouts: check. Calls for more handouts: check. Pick any
western country and this would be a pretty accurate description
of its current state.
Let’s continue our history refresher. Remember those old
black-and-white pictures of children playing with stacks of
money? Or people burning money rather than firewood,
because money was cheaper than firewood? That’s interwar
Germany and as many assume, in the midst of a financial
crisis caused by a Wall Street crash.
But these pictures are dated to 1923-1924 and the Wall
Street crash didn’t happen until 1929. Why the hyperinflation
then? As usual, it’s complicated. That hyperinflation was a
product of many factors, especially monetary expansion,
but printing money to pay workers who refused to work was
one. It would be inaccurate to say that these payments were
the sole cause of the hyperinflation (many would argue that
inflation was already underway even before the French invasion).
But, it would probably also be inaccurate to say this
played no part in the hyperinflation.
Let’s go back to today. Giving people money “just because”
is essentially Universal Basic Income (UBI). You can call it
“stimulus checks” if you want, but if the one-time payments
transformed into monthly payments, at some point you have
to admit that the essential discussion is about UBI and not
“extraordinary measures.”
There are many arguments for and against UBI, but one
often overlooked issue is whether or not UBI stimulates the
economy. The often-presented case follows a line of reasoning
similar to this example: People receive their UBI, they
spend that money on hot dogs, the owner of the hot dog
stand will then have money to visit a barber, the barber will
then have money to buy hot dogs. Call it the “Circle of Life” if
you are into “Lion King,” or the “Circular Flow” if you are into
economics.
But in order to “inject money” into the economy, you have to
withdraw it from somewhere. Giving everyone $2,000 would
“inject” $8 trillion into the economy, but if you increase taxes
to raise that $8 trillion, you would withdraw money from the
economy. You would be achieving redistribution, not stimulus.
Financing UBI by borrowing is another option. But borrowing
is essentially using the resources of tomorrow to finance
consumption today. You can consume more today at the
expense of tomorrow, but that’s just saddling future taxpayers
with debt.
There is an argument that borrowing should not be of
concern because if we invest the borrowed resources right,
it will lead to such an explosion of economic growth that repaying
the debt will be easy; after all, businesses borrow all
the time. But think for a second. How will borrowing money
and giving it out to everyone, regardless of what they do,
lead to long-term economic or technological breakthroughs?
Finally, there are those who say we should just print money
and give it out to everyone. But there’s a cemetery of
economies full of countries who’ve tried just that: Zimbabwe,
Venezuela, interwar Germany, and even the Roman empire.
Economic welfare is not how much money you have, but
what you can buy with it. If you continue printing money,
sooner or later money will lose value.
Admittedly, there are many factors involved that can mask
inflation (e.g. falling oil prices). It could take much longer for
the US to get there than interwar Germany, but the basic
mechanism is the same.
Some say that inflation is a price worth paying to have everyone
employed. But wouldn’t people receive UBI regardless
of their employment? Unless someone has a logical
explanation backed up with some empirics on how giving
everyone money—regardless of whether you work or sit
on a couch—encourages you to work, it is merely wishful
thinking for now.
by: Zilvinas Silenas
UBI is no miracle. Those that peddle it are no visionaries or
Santas. Those who oppose it are not scrooges. It is a very
serious issue with the potential to sever the link between
effort and reward. If you worry about the situations where
people ask to be fired because living on temporary benefits
is better than working, what do you think will happen when
we just start handing out money to everyone forever?
Why Should You See a Financial Advisor?
The social distancing and stay-at-home orders necessitated by the coronavirus
have led many of us to feel isolated. Still, we’ve fought back
through social media, “virtual” gatherings and walks in the neighborhood,
where we could greet friends and neighbors (from 6 feet away). But when
you’re dealing with the financial effects of the virus and you’re investing
alone, you could encounter some problems that may prove costly.
Of course, with so much investment-related information available online,
on television and in any number of periodicals, it’s not surprising that some
people feel they can invest without any assistance. But the volatility of the
financial markets over the past few months has also pointed to the dangers
of going solo in the investment world. And you might find that a professional
financial advisor can help you in several ways, including the following:
Taking emotions out of investing. During this period of market turbulence,
many self-guided investors are letting their emotions drive their investment
decisions. As a result, they sell investments when their price is down,
“locking in” their losses. Furthermore, if they then stay out of the financial
markets, they will miss out on the eventual recovery – and some of the biggest
gains in market rallies usually occur right at the beginning. But if you
work with a financial advisor who has helped you develop a personalized
investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon,
you will be far less likely to react to extreme market conditions by making
ill-advised decisions.
Maintaining perspective. When you’re putting away money for the future
and you suddenly have a lot less of it, you might start to wonder if that
future is somehow in jeopardy. But if you’ve been working with a financial
advisor and following your investment strategy, you’ll know that you don’t
have to immediately cash out those investments that have lost value, and
you may not need to liquidate them for decades if they were designed for
a long-term goal, such as retirement. By the time you do need to sell them,
their value may well have appreciated significantly. And if you’ve got a
well-constructed portfolio, you’ll also own shorter-term, less volatile investments
to help meet your current cash flow needs.
Understanding the history of investing. The recent market instability is
unique in the sense that its cause – a worldwide pandemic – is so highly
unusual, and it hopefully will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Typically,
prolonged market downturns are triggered by explainable financial or
economic factors, such as the bursting of the “dot-com” bubble in 2000.
However, market drops of 20 percent or more – generally referred to as
bear markets – are not at all unusual and have happened every few years
over the past several decades. Financial advisors are well aware of this
history and share it with their clients. And for many people, the knowledge
that “we’ve been here before” is reassuring and makes it easier for them to
continue following their investment strategies.
The road to your financial goals is a long one, with many twists and turns.
There is a Bible verse that comes to my mind often, and it
goes like this: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever
is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence
and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The
things you have learned and received and heard and seen in
me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with
you.” (Philippians 4:8-10)
As I talk with people these days, it is amazing the different
viewpoints they have. I hesitate to use the word “extreme,”
but it might be a good word to use. Some of us are living with
a lot of fear and uncertainty, and others seem to be living with
great hope. President Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks
are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” As I observe
different conversations, both directly and indirectly, this certainly
seems to be true. Those who speak with hope seem to
have a spirit of thankfulness and joy while those who speak
from fear can quickly talk themselves out of hope. As many of
us know, we can quickly fall in with either side, depending on
our viewpoint of the subject being talked about. Which conversation
would you gravitate to?
Look back in the book of Philippians where it describes the
things we should think about: true, honorable, right, pure,
lovely, good repute, excellence, worthy of praise. This list
will give you hope, and it might even give you some thoughts
about the future. Scripture then encourages us to practice
four things: what you have learned, received, and heard. The
fourth point is what catches my attention every time I read it. It
talks about what you have “seen in me.”
I share stories from time to time about a group of men I knew
growing up, many of whom I still think about today. You know
how you think people are old when you are young? These
men seemed old to me when I was younger, but they were
gentle and patient men, especially to a young boy who was
rambunctious and annoying. I was supposed to be their
helper in their various different trades, but they treated me
more like a student. There are a lot of things I do today that
I learned from these men. I asked one of these men a few
years later why they were so patient with me and desired to
teach me. He said that maybe a little part of the patience
buymidway.com
252-335-9800
was to train me, but it had to do in a larger part with being a
living example for other men to follow. This reminds me of the
words of President Ronald Reagan who said, “Live simply,
love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, leave the rest to
God.”
One of the greatest values of learning to think about tomorrow
while a struggle is raging is not thinking of yourself first but
putting others first before yourself. It is important to pass on
friendship, knowledge, training, and encouragement no matter
your age, gender, ethnicity, or financial status. So if you are a
person who is struggling to get through the day, please reach
out and ask for help. Every life is important to God, and He
cares for every detail of your life. Please know that you do not
need to struggle alone. You are not alone in your struggle.
There is help. We will get through this, and I pray we will be
stronger for it.
May God bless you richly.
Bertie County During the War of Northern Aggression
In Part from The Papers of Harry Lewis Thompson and of The Records of Gerald Thomas
As in many of the counties of Eastern North
Carolina, Bertie County’s allegiance split
with their loyalties. All during the 1860s, most
Bertie County inhabitants fought either for
the south or the north. However, there were
more than 200 Bertie County men who fought
basically for themselves and received protection
from the occupying Yankee troops. These
ravaging men were labeled buffaloes who were
also spies and informants for these occupying
Northern forces. These buffaloes were flatly
armed bushwhackers and prowling bands of
guerrillas.
The guerrillas begin operating in Bertie county.
Pillaging, robbing, and preying upon citizens’
defensiveness and noncombatant status for
personal gain. North Carolina, in 1860-1861
stood against succession. While southern
peace emissaries were in D.C. awaiting an
audience with Lincoln and Cabinet members,
Lincoln was secretly loading ships with troops
and ammunition and headed to Fort Sumter in
South Carolina. Going against his public policy
of non- aggression and keeping the southern
peace emissaries on hold for weeks. On April
12th, 1861, these ships arrived at Fort Sumter.
The arrival of the Ships created a hostile
perception and ultimately led to an end of any
hopes of peaceful resolution. Lincoln requested
the raising of 75,000 troops from the southern
bordering states as part of Lincoln’s plans after
the firing on Fort Sumter. No men responded
from the Border States since Lincoln’s public
policy was not reality, and the Border States’
leadership found themselves with dual loyalties
as was revealed later in the war. Lincoln
declared a blockade of southern ports on April
19th, 1861. On May 20th, 1861, North Carolina
succeeded the Union. On May 29th, 1861, the
first confederate troops marched out of Bertie
County, by April 1862 there were 390 Bertie
County men in Confederate service and 510 in
the militia.
What self defense should you teach your child?
There I was — about to become a new father…multiple black
belt holder, self defense “expert” and no clue what to teach my
kids about self defense…it was a good thing I have some interesting
friends…
What’s Wrong With This Picture?
by theselfdefenseco
One of the biggest challenges I discovered was that 85% of crimes
against children are committed by someone they know. Stranger
Danger only works for a minority of the situations. Chances are
your child will be threatened by someone who already had access
to them and is in a position of authority (coach, neighbor, relative,
counselor, clergy). These predators are cunning, they know how
to stay “concealed” and they know how to position themselves between
you and your child.
1197 Hwy 17 South Elizabeth City, NC
252-338-2131
Forget what you see in the movies and what your local “martial arts
expert” claims…A child under the age of thirteen has ZERO chance
to defeat a determined and dangerous adult in a fight.
Take a look at the picture – there is NO WAY that child can generate
enough power to stop that adult, yet it’s techniques like this that
instill false confidence and create the illusion that your child can
actually do this against an adult.
Yet everyday millions of naïve parents drop their kids at the dojo
with 100% confidence that their child is learning to defend themselves
against adult attackers. How do I know this…I used to be one
of those instructors.
I remember the “dojo days” teaching the same self defense to the
kids as we would the adults and thinking that it “would work” while
we all drank the Kool-Aide.
But then it happened…I had kids and was forced to face the truth…
Our best junior black belt on his best day would get thrashed by our
worst adult white belt on his worst day.
I needed to give my kids SOMETHING REAL that would work.
The idea of them going off out of my supervision got me worried.
Here I am, the “self defense guy” and I don’t have the slightest clue
what to teach my kids. Luckily I had two students training with me –
Brian who was on the county Special Victims Unit and Toni, a school
psychologist. With their help and a lot more research I developed
the program to educate my grammar school aged kids called FAMI-
LY SAFE.
This is tricky and challenging for children to comprehend – so to
help them we came up with a set of SIX GOLDEN RULES followed
by one decisive action ESCAPE and TELL.
And from here the FAMILY SAFE PROGRAM was born.
This program is actually to help you teach your kids. It’s not for you
to sit them in front of the screen and then have them “magically”
become street smart.
This is how I taught my kids and this is how I’m going to help you.
Martial arts provide many benefits from fitness to self confidence,
but you can’t have a child believe they can “fight” a grown up and
WIN.
Teaching kids to scratch the eyes, bite and strike the testicles is a
LAST RESORT that should only be taught after your child knows
how to identify, avoid and escape these predators BEFORE any use
of force is needed.
For example, in order for any predator to impose his will over your
child they will need to ISOLATE them. One of the Six Golden Rules
of the FAMILY SAFE PROGRAM is “Don’t Leave the Herd.” A child
should never be alone with an adult other than a close and trusted
family member. As soon as your child finds themself alone they
should leave, find a family member, teacher or a “safe stranger”.
From there, it’s simple – Every time one of the Six Golden Rules is
broken your child should have the SAME REACTION. Kids understand
rules and they can execute one simple course of action…
ESCAPE.
Just like the rest of our self defense…keep it simple.
Albemarle Eye Center
After following the recommendations from various
governing bodies, as well as the CDC and local
governments, and halting elective surgeries until we
could be sure the hospitals weren’t overwhelmed, Jitendra
“Albemarle Eye Center and Precision Eye Care (AE-
optometric physicians, Drs. Robert Mills and Scott
Matthews of Clarity Vision, and Dr. Anna Leggett with
My Eye Dr, to provide this state of the art technology
for their patients” said Dr. Swarup. The first LenSx laser
assisted cataract surgery in Williamston’s history was
performed this past week, May 27th Martin General
Hospital, by our very own renowned Ophthalmologist,
Dr. Swarup. Although Dr. Swarup has performed more
than 40,000 cataract surgeries and over 1,400 LenSx
laser surgeries over the last 28 years at local hospitals,
this was a first for the town of Williamston and Martin
General Hospital. This method of cataract surgery has
rapidly become the treatment of choice nationwide. “We
are excited to be the trailblazers providing the most
technologically advanced cataract surgeries right here
in Martin County” said Courtney Haynes, Director of
Utilizing the Laser method, the laser is able to make a
precise entry and soften the cataract pre-surgically, in
order to make cataract removal extremely efficient and
Funding Your Business During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating
impact on small business owners throughout the
country. Government programs such as the Paycheck
Protect Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans
have been helpful to some business owners, but these
programs are not enough. Small business owners are
facing cash flow challenges because of low revenues
or closing doors during the stay-at-home order. This
pandemic forced business owners to reduce their work
force or cut hours. To make matters worse, many
banks have placed strict lending requirements and
some alternative lenders have stopped lending or will
renew existing loans with current customers. Even
with all these hurdles, there are solutions available to
help business owners who need capital to restart their
business.
Some private lenders have loosened underwriting
guidelines on loans secured by real estate making it
easier for business owners to the working capital. In
most cases business owners can get a loan for up to
70% of the value of residential or commercial/industrial
real estate including parking lots, gas stations, co-ops,
mixed use properties, or farms. One of our partnering
lenders rolled out a new relief loan specifically for
businesses that have been affected by COVID-19. This
relief loan has no payments for first 3 months, interest
only for month 4-12, and payback period for months 13-
24 with an option to select an amortization schedule up
to 48 months. This loan can help overcome restrictions
such as low FICO, low revenues, debt to income, bankruptcies,
non-sufficient funds, or judgements. Business
owners who own rental property can cash out on a loan
up to 30 years with out FICO score or being reported on
personal credit.
safe. Importantly, the laser creates a perfectly centered
circular opening in the capsule surrounding the cataract,
ensuring an exactly centered implant placement.
In doing so, we are able to provide ideal surgical control,
allowing for the treatment of all types of cataracts,
regardless of density. Patients now have a chance to
customize their surgery, possibly eliminate astigmatism
and restore near vision, as well as distance vision, in a
single day surgical procedure.
“Cataract surgery benefits the patient through improved
quality of life, decreased risk of falls and fractures, and
improves the patients chances of living longer” said
Saundra Pearson, Surgical Director. Cataracts may
be detected due to blurry vision, sensitivity to light, decreased
night vision, glare and/or halos around lights.
Protecting your vision by having routine eye exams,
and wearing a correct prescription in eyeglasses and/or
sunglasses, as it increases a patient’s risk for cataracts.
Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed
surgeries in the United States, and it’s one of
the safest. During the surgery, Dr. Swarup removes
the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial lens.
Greater than 95% of patients have improved vision after
their surgery.
1-800-755-7535. Your vision is our focus.
One solution that can help a business get the working
capital they need is a sale-leaseback. A sale-leaseback
transaction allows a business to sell an asset, normally
up to 75% of the asset’s value, to raise capital and
the purchaser leases the asset to the business. The
business gets the benefit of having cash and using
the asset. The asset must be owned by the business,
free of liens, and normally maintains value during the
lease. The most common assets in a sale-leaseback
are heavy duty industrial, construction, or transportation
equipment.
Business owners who are leasing or making payments
on an asset can refinance and cash-out the different of
75% of the value of and the pay-off amount. This transaction
is often known as a Refi/Cash-out and allows
a business owner to get capital while using the asset.
Business owners can consolidate multiple leases into
one and still cash-out equity from the equipment. In
most cases, a Refi/Cash-out results in a lower monthly
payment and improving the business owner’s cash flow.
How does a business owner get access to these
working capital solutions to help their business during
this pandemic? Working with a business loan broker
is not required but you will have to research the right
type of financing for your goals and then find the right
lender, however some private lenders only originate
loans through a broker. The second option is to use
a business loan broker. For business owners in North
Carolina this means a business loan broker who follows
North Carolina laws, has a Service Agreement, provides
the required North Carolina Disclosure, and does not
charge an upfront fee.
Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.
If not treated, cataracts can lead to blindness. In addition, the longer
cataracts are left untreated, the more difficult it can be to successfully
Julian “Cannonball” Edwin Adderley
The teacher/saxophonist was born September 15, 1928 in Tampa,
Florida and died August 8, 1975 (46) in Gary, Indiana. Although from
Tampa, Florida he moved to New York in 1955. His nickname derived
from “cannibal”; a title imposed on him by high school colleagues as a
tribute to his voracious appetite.
Cannonball moved to Tallahassee, Florida when his parents obtained
teaching positions at Florida A&M University. Both Cannonball and brother
Nat played with Ray Charles when Charles lived in Tallahassee during
the early 1940s. Cannonball moved to Broward County, Florida in 1948
after finishing his music studies at Florida A&M University and became
the band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale until 1950. He
moved to New York City in 1955 to seek graduate studies at New York
conservatories.
He lived in the neighborhood of Corona Queens and one night he
carried his saxophone with him to Cafe Bohemia where he asked to sit
in for the band’s saxophonist who was late. The “buzz” on the New York
jazz scene after Adderley’s performance announced him as the heir to
the mantle of Charlie Parker although the more traditional Benny Carter’s
rhythm-and-blues phrasing also inspired his music. Adderley was an
extremely gifted musician technically, known for an improvisational style
that featured restless, highly decorated, often florid lines; emphatic blues
harmonies; and a full, rich tone. As jazz became more atonally obtuse
and rhythmically complex during the 1960s, Adderley’s straightforward
approach helped keep jazz popular with mainstream audiences.
Adderley formed his own group with his brother Nat after signing onto
the Savoy jazz label in 1957. He was noticed by Miles Davis and was
asked to join his group in 1957, three months prior to the return of John
Coltrane to the group.
His interest as an educator carried over to his recordings. In 1961, Cannonball
narrated The Child’s Introduction to Jazz, released on Riverside
Records. By the end of the 1960s, Adderley’s playing began to reflect the
This Month in
NC History
ncdcr.gov
On June 2, 1690, John Gibbs
issued a declaration claiming his
right to the governorship of Carolina
and called on the people to obey
him. Gibbs proclaimed himself chief
executive of the colony, basing his
claim on the Fundamental Constitutions,
when Governor Seth Sothel
was banished earlier that year.
Despite that, Philip Ludwell arrived in
the colony in the spring of 1690 with
a governor’s commission from the
Lords Proprietors, on whose authority
North Carolina was colonized.
Ludwell set up his government, but
Gibbs was determined not to give up
the governorship. Gibbs referred to
Ludwell as a “rascal, impostor and
usurper” and said that he would fight
anyone to keep Ludwell from the
governor’s office.
The next month Gibbs and some
supporters entered the Pasquotank
precinct court and broke it up. Gibbs
forbade the holding of a court without
first receiving a commission from
him. The force seized two magistrates,
took them as prisoners and
held them captive on Gibbs’s Virginia
plantation.
Upon hearing of this, the Albemarle
council–that’s the government
backed by Ludwell–sent the militia
to stop this rebellion. However,
the militia refused to enter Virginia
without permission from that colony’s
government.
Gibbs and Ludwell both went to England
to make their claims before the
Lords Proprietors. The proprietors
upheld Ludwell’s commission.
