Das Grand Hotel Wien feiert heuer seinen 150.
Geburtstag, der Corona-bedingt anders zu feiern
sein wird, als ursprünglich gedacht.
This year, the Grand Hotel Wien celebrates its
150th anniversary. The celebrations will, however,
look differently than initially intended due to the
coronavirus pandemic.
Das Haus an der prunkvollen Ringstraße und nahe
der Staatsoper zählt bereits seit seiner Eröffnung im
Jahre 1870 zu den luxuriösesten Hotels in Europa.
Seither ist es ein beliebter Ort für Adel, Prominenz,
Politiker und Künstler aus aller Welt. Schon Johann
Strauß Sohn feierte hier 1894 sein 50-jähriges
Bühnenjubiläum im Ballsaal, der sich heute als größter
Hotel-Ballsaal für Firmenfeiern, Hochzeiten und Bälle
bestens eignet. Das Grand Hotel Wien verfügt über 205
luxuriöse Zimmer und Suiten in insgesamt sieben
Kategorien und garantiert besten Komfort für
behagliches Wohlbefinden, in gediegenem Design und
mit modernster technischer Ausstattung.
Auch kulinarisch hat das Grand Hotel Wien
Herausragendes zu bieten. Vier Restaurants und zwei
Bars gehören zu den besten der Stadt und wurden
mehrfach ausgezeichnet, darunter das Gourmet-
Restaurant „Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald“ (ein Michelin-
Stern) sowie eines der führendsten japanischen
Restaurants in Österreich, das „UNKAI“ (zwei Gault
Millau-Hauben). In der „UNKAI - Bar & Sushi“ wird man
mit exzellenten Sushi-Kreationen in lockerer,
entspannter Atmosphäre verwöhnt - in den Sommermonaten
auch mit eigener Terrasse.
The famed establishment on the pompous Ringstrasse
boulevard, located close to the Vienna State Opera, is
recognised among Europe’s most luxurious hotels since
its opening in 1870. Ever since then, it has been a
popular destination for nobility, the rich and famous,
politicians and artists from all over the world. Johann
Strauss the Younger celebrated his 50th stage
anniversary at its famed ballroom, which today is the
ideal venue for corporate events, weddings and balls.
The Grand Hotel Wien has more than 205 luxurious
rooms and suites across a total of seven categories,
guaranteeing comfortable and cosy stays within a
tastefully designed environment and with state-of-theart
furnishing and technical equipment.
The culinary standard is outstanding at the Grand
Hotel Wien. Its four multiple award winning restaurants
and two bars are among the best in the city, among
them the “Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald” gourmet restaurant
(one Michelin star), as well as one of Austria’s leading
Japanese restaurants, the “UNKAI” (two Gault Millau
toques). At the “UNKAI - Bar & Sushi”, the chefs spoil
guests with their excellent sushi creations amid an
easy-going and relaxed atmosphere – and in the
summer months, guests can dine on a terrace, too.

General Manager im Grand Hotel Wien.
The native German has been the General Manager of the Grand Hotel Wien since 2012.
Durch die Corona Pandemie bedingt, wurden ja
alle Pläne zum feierlichen 150-jährigen Jubiläum
im Grand Hotel völlig durcheinandergewirbelt.
Wie wird denn nun gefeiert?
Wir mussten einige liebevoll geplanten
Veranstaltungen leider absagen. Aber wir hoffen
nach wie vor, unser geplantes Jubiläumskonzert
im Herbst nachholen zu können. Wir arbeiten
außerdem mit einem externen Partner an der
Realisierung einer Rooftop-Bar für die Sommermonate.
Zudem gibt es zum 150. Geburtstag für alle
Österreicher ein Gewinnspiel über 150 Tage, bis in
den Oktober hinein. Alle Gäste des Lobby Cafés
Rosengarten und des Unkai - Bar&Sushi sowie alle
Hotelgäste können teilnehmen. Es werden
wöchentlich Gewinner gezogen, die u.a. ein Candle
Light Dinner im Sterne-Restaurant Le Ciel oder
einen Entspannungstag im Grand Spa N° 605
gewinnen können. Selbstverständlich kann man
auch unseren beliebten Grand Guglhupf in der
Sonderedition in Kooperation mit der Österreichischen
Galerie Belvedere und unseren eigenen
Honig, produziert von den Bienen auf unserem
Hoteldach, gewinnen. Als Hauptpreis winkt ein
Aufenthalt mit zwei Übernachtungen und
Frühstück in der Präsidenten-Suite inklusive
Candle Light Dinner, vom Hotel Management
serviert, und Rundum-Sorglos-Paket für die Dauer
des Aufenthaltes.
Sie sind seit Ende 2012 General Manager. Das
Haus war 1870 das erste Grand Hotel Wiens
- inwiefern fühlen Sie sich der Historie
verpflichtet?
Ich fühle mich der Geschichte verpflichtet und bin
stolz, hier tätig zu sein. Das Reiseverhalten, die
Wünsche der Gäste und die technischen
Anforderungen haben sich in den vergangenen
150 Jahren sehr verändert. Gemeinsam mit
unserem Team erarbeite ich moderne Konzepte
– wir bewegen uns stets in Richtung Zukunft.
The coronavirus pandemic has completely stirred
up the plans for the festivities surrounding the
150-year anniversary of the Grand Hotel Wien.
How will the celebrations be held in the end?
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel several events
that we prepared with a lot of love and care. But we
still hope to be able to make up for our planned
anniversary concert in autumn. We are also working
with an external partner to create a rooftop bar for the
summer months.
There is also a 150-day sweepstake for all Austrians on
their 150th birthday, until October. All guests of the
lobby café Rosengarten and Unkai - Bar & Sushi as
well as all hotel guests can participate. Winners are
drawn weekly, which include win a candle light dinner
in the star restaurant Le Ciel or a day of relaxation in
the Grand Spa N ° 605. Of course, you can also win our
popular Grand Guglhupf in a special edition in
cooperation with the Austrian Gallery Belvedere and
our own honey, produced by the bees on our hotel roof.
The main prize is a stay with two overnight stays and
breakfast in the presidential suite, including a candle
light dinner, served by the hotel management, and an
all-round carefree package for the duration of the stay.
You have been General Manager since the end of
2012. The Grand Hotel Wien was founded in 1870
– do you feel a sense of responsibility towards its
history?
I do perceive a responsibility towards the institution’s
history, and I am glad to be able to contribute to it.
People’s tastes, the industry as a whole and the needs
of our guests have changed a lot over the past 150
years. Together with our team, I try to realise new,
state-of-the-art concepts. We are always trying to
move forward into the future.
