Harri runs
with heart
Abel Tasman ‘track’ now in his sights
• By Bea Gooding
SIX-YEAR-OLD Harri Brown doesn’t let
anything break his stride, even if it means
living with a congenital heart defect.
Harri was diagnosed with critical
aortic stenosis shortly after birth. But his
keen interest in running grew immensely,
exceeding all expectations on how much
his little heart could take.
He has now set himself a new
challenge: Running a distance equivalent
to the length of the Abel Tasman track,
covering 60km over a six-week period.
The Big Strides for Brave Hearts is an
initiative by Heart Kids New Zealand
which challenges people to walk, run,
bike or scooter a chosen distance while
raising money for heart families in Canterbury.
Parents Rod and Melanie Brown said
Harri jumped at the chance to take part.
“He loves to help people and he has a
lot of empathy. He knows this is giving
back to other heart kids,” said Mr Brown.
“So far nothing affects his running,
he always seems to be full of energy. It’s
pretty surreal, we never thought he could
go running like that.”
In May, Harri started to run about 5km
a day at various locations in Christchurch,
including at Hagley Park for the fundraiser
– approved by his cardiologist.
Prior to the challenge, Mr Brown was
baffled to learn that his then 5-year-old
could run the 5km Hagley Park course in
23min 27sec.
Harri chose the Abel Tasman distance
because he had physically run part of the
track before.
During a walk with his family last
Christmas, he wanted to run the rest of the
way back to the car park which ended up
covering almost 9km. • Turn to page 2

Young runner’s 60km challenge
• From page 1
Harri was only 3 when he first
wanted to join his dad when he went
for a run.
“I said no, it was probably not for
him,” said Mr Brown.
“He was exceptionally upset when I
said no, so we took it slowly and when
he got tired I continued to run with
him on my shoulders.”
From then on it seemed like they
could never put away his running
shoes.
Harri’s heart defect meant that
at birth he had severe left ventricle
dysfunction – ejecting between seven
to 12 per cent of its volume each
heartbeat.
Mr Brown said a normal baby’s
heart ejects 55 per cent.
“He was given a 50 per cent chance
to live when he was born and he had
open-heart surgery 27 hours after
birth.
“After surgery at Starship Hospital,
he now has a normally functioning
ventricle.”
Mrs Brown was appreciative of the
“fantastic” support they received from
Heart Kids Canterbury and meeting
other families going through a similar
journey.
“It’s important to meet people going
through the same thing, it makes a
big difference,” she said.

Petition gets pump track installed
A TEMPORARY pump track
has been installed in Shirley
following a 12-year-old’s petition
to provide one for the area.
Chisnallwood Intermediate
pupil Shannon Smith presented
the petition to the Papanui-
Innes Community Board in
2018, asking to install a track at
the Shirley Community Reserve.
The 48m relocatable track features
bumps and bends suitable
for primary and intermediateage
riders, skateboarders, scooter
riders and roller skaters.
His determination resulted in
the track’s opening, therefore
Shannon and his family were the
first to wheel into action.
Community board chairwoman
Emma Norrish said the new
pump track provided an active
outdoor option for youngsters
and helped revitalise the reserve.
“Shannon spoke to our board,
outlining the importance of a

pump track to the local area,”
she said.
“He pointed out that young
people needed a place to skate,
scoot and bike, and that the
nearest skate park was ‘ages
away’.
“We are thrilled that it has all
come together and that we now
have a special place for younger
family members – and that
Shannon is the first to line up.
“Local support had helped
power the project, with consultation
on the pump track attracting
a very positive response.”
The relocatable modular
track also keeps options open
for any future use of the reserve
space.
Along with the track, a
multi-purpose concrete table
and seating were to be installed
nearby.
Call to

overdue
books
MORE THAN 120,000 books
are back on the shelves of
Christchurch City libraries in the
first week after reopening.
However, a significant number
of the loans prior to the lockdown
period remained outstanding.
The city council head of libraries
and information Carolyn Robertson
said customers would not
face any fines over post-lockdown
overdue books if they are back by
June 15.
“We are asking people to check
around their homes for any books
or other library items that may
have been forgotten while our
libraries have been closed to the
public,” said Ms Robertson.
“Thousands of items have
already been returned in our first
week, and we are thrilled with the
response to our reopening.
“We have extended the loan
period for all of those outstanding
items due from March 22 to June
15. However, there will be fines
for any late returns from June 16.”

Locals Unite for New Brighton
New Brighton holds a rich history of
memories for many generations of families
who frequent or live in the village. The
New Brighton history books are filled
to the brim with story after story of
neighbour helping neighbour and the
village uniting under the guise of attack
from a natural event.
Two stories which stand out in the
records books are the 1907 New Brighton
fire and the 2011 earthquake. Two events,
a century apart sought to destroy the
fabric of the village, but the locals united
and were not going to let mother nature
destroy the seaside community they call
home.
On Friday the 7th, 1907 a fire took hold
of a mile of wasteland in North beach. The
sandy land was covered in lupins provided
tremendous fuel for the fires rapid
growth. The fire spread quickly and by the
afternoon it looked certain the township
would be engulfed and devastated by the
flames.
The New Brighton Volunteer Fire
Brigade would not be established for
another three years, so the residents took
saving their village into their own hands.
Adults and children alike went straight to
work and dug trenches along the wetlands
to stop the fire, which eventually stopped
the fire and saved the village.
History repeats itself in 2011, when
the Christchurch earthquake devastated
the town. Nine years on the locals have
supported each other as they work
together to bring life back to the area.
“The heart of New Brighton is the
people. Their love for the village is evident
in how they all work together as a united
family to bring colour, style and show
the heart of who we are,” says Martha
Baxendell, a Coordinator of New Brighton
Project.
As the country is re-opening, not only is
New Brighton a place to walk for wellbeing
and the fun of being by the sea, but this
village is a place with heart and history
and vibe. Stop by our shops and browse.
Visit a restaurant or café. Enjoy the natural
beauty as well as the beauty local artists
have created with our mural parade.
Donate to our Blanker Project which offers
blankets to families in need from around
the region. The New Brighton Market is
a weekly event soon to be reopening as
well as the anticipated opening of the Hot
Pools.”

The mural must go on
The New Brighton Outdoor Art Festival may have been
cancelled, but the murals must go on. The artists have started to
paint their murals leading up to the show which was scheduled
for March 28th.
The showcase was the brainchild of New Brighton local Gavin
Fantastic and his wife, who were inspired while walking through
the New Brighton mall and its derelict buildings. A concept was
formed to enliven the vacant spaces and bring colour, pizazz,
pride, and artistry to the area. A small group of local community
members were brought together to deliver on a shared vision.
After 18 months in the making the public event was cancelled
however the original goal to bring three large beautiful murals to
the area has still been accomplished. As you enter the community
you are welcomed by ‘Welcome to Ōrua Paeroa’ mural that was
painted by the Fantastic’s, Fiksate, and members of the New
Brighton community. The festival which included live music,
yarn bombing and art workshops will be missed, but the art itself
lives on.
Local artists have lent their talents to the murals of varying
sizes, with all three larger than 45 m by 4m. The support for
the event has been overwhelming from so many, including
RubbleCity, Enliven Spaces, New Brighton Project, and support
from local businesses such as Fiksate, the New Brighton Art
Gallery, Burger Joint and so many more.
The event is independently run and plans on holding their next
Art Festival in 2022 as the NBOAF team continue their goal to
bring vibrancy to their bohemian beachside community.
The group is also exhibiting over 40 different graffiti and street
art pieces in the New Brighton Art Gallery from 20th May – 30th
May. For many this is an opportunity to bring a piece of artwork
inspired by walls and tracksides of Christchurch into their
homes. Maybe you might discover the next Banksy?
This one of a kind New Brighton Outdoor Art Festival will
leave you wanting more.

There’s a
vibrant buzz..
There’s a vibrant buzz in the seaside village of New
Brighton with the opening of He Puna Taimoana.
Hundreds of local residents have flocked to the new hot
pools since their opening last Saturday.
He Puna Taimoana Manager Merryn Skipper says it’s
fantastic to see local support for the new facility.
“We’re really proud to bring to life the community’s
vision for seaside hot pools in New Brighton. He Puna
Taimoana is the perfect place to relax and unwind,
while enjoying a sunset soak with beach views. Our
Christchurch resident card means cheaper rates for
locals, so everyone can enjoy this stunning facility. We
look forward to welcoming you here.”
The cooler temperatures make it the perfect time
to visit He Puna Taimoana, with five hot water pools
ranging in temperature from 26 to 40 degrees Celsius.
For the braver of us, there’s a 12 degree plunge pool to
cool off in or enjoy a delicious coffee or bite to eat from
the on-site café Saturdays.
“We’ve made some changes to help keep people safe in
the Covid-19 environment,” says Miss Skipper. “If you
want to visit the hot pools you’ll need to make a booking
and pay online.”
He Puna Taimoana will operate at reduced capacity
initially; open for four sessions from 10am to 8pm
every day, with a
maximum of 50
people in each
session, to allow
physical distancing.
Sessions will be 1
hour and 45 minutes
with cleaning in
between each
session. The first
session will be at
10am, the second
session at 12.30pm,
the third at 3pm and
the final session at
5.30pm.
The sauna and
steam room will
remain closed at alert level 2.
“By limiting the numbers to 50 per session, people will
be able to keep themselves physically distant from other
pool users and we can ensure that everyone gets the most
out of the experience,” says Miss Skipper.
Christchurch locals can enjoy discounted entry rates,
with a single entry adult ticket $14 for residents aged 16
and over. Child (aged 4 to 15) tickets are $10, with proof
of a valid Cando high school student card. Children aged
three and under are admitted for free.
Standard admission charges for those who live outside
of Christchurch will be $18 for an adult and $13 for a
child.

HOME & HEATING
Zone Control for your
ducted heat pump
Ducted heat pumps are a highly
efficient way to heat (or cool) your
home. The air from the heat pump
is ducted to several rooms or zones
in your house. Using a zone control
system makes your ducted heat pump
even more efficient, by specifying the
amount of heat required in each area,
so not wasting energy to overheat or
overcool any room.
The AirTouch4 zone control system
from Smooth-Air takes ducted heat
pump air zoning to a whole new level
of comfort and energy efficiency.
AirTouch4 - The Ultimate Zone
Control
Have total control of your comfort
zone: AirTouch4 lets everyone enjoy a
different level of conditioned air in the
room they are in.
Save money on the power bill, without
compromising on comfort, by only
running the heating or cooling where
you need it with Smart Zoning. Plus with
runtime tracking, energy and airflow
management technology, you can enjoy
greater efficiency and savings from your
family’s ducted heat pump.
The AirTouch4 can also connect to
Google Home and 60 Amazon % Alexa.
Not every home is designed equal. Not
every room is either. Temperatures can
often fluctuate from one room to the next
because of sunlight, room activity or other
factors.
With AirTouch4’s Individual
Temperature Control Technology (ITC),
the AirTouch monitors temperatures
and smartly adjusts airflow as needed
around your home with the aid of multiple
wireless temperature sensors instead of a
single sensor in one location. When some
rooms get too hot or cold, the AirTouch
will adjust airflow to maintain your desired
temperature, without wasting conditioned
air on rooms already comfortable.
Contact Smooth-Air on 0800
SMOOTH or sales@smooth-air.co.nz
for more information on the AirTouch4
zone control.
