EDITOR’S NOTE
Learned
Lessons
Recent months have been challenging for us here in Malaysia and for the rest of the world
as we navigate a new normal amid the Covid-19 pandemic. To stop the spread of the virus
we have had to radically change almost everything we do: how we work, exercise, socialise,
shop, manage our health, educate our kids and take care of family members.
We all want things to go back to the way it was before but what most of us have
probably not yet realised is that things won’t go back to normal, not in a few weeks or even
a few months. Some things never will.
In an interview with LinkedIn recently, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates shared that it will be a while before
many things get back to normal and a lot about everyday life has probably been changed forever. “Will people
want to go travel?” asked Bill. “Will they want to go to restaurants? So, even once the government is saying
these activities are OK, we can’t expect the demand side to re-emerge overnight.”
From having to constantly practice social distancing and getting used to life without the outdoors to
continually washing our hands and wearing masks, this is what life looks like for us. It is important for us to
step back and revisit the situation from a bird’s eye view. We are not in this alone as communities pull together
to make things better.
As our days continue to look different, we are resilient and we will come out of this stronger. This forced
change in our “used to be” everyday life will permit us time to slow down and appreciate just how lucky we
really are as a society.
Though life and work during this pandemic is unusual, uncertain and unpredictable, it is now more
apparent than ever that we must work together to get through it. Because very likely the new normal is here to
stay and the quicker we adjust to that fact, the greater our chance to survive, and possibly thrive.
featured in this book illustrate some
of the most innovative and engaging
residential projects by architects and
decade between 2009 and 2018.
Carefully selected to illustrate contemporary life in the tropics, the
chosen homes are sustainable and take the grave issue of climate change
into consideration. Natural ventilation, ability to harvest rainwater, wide
overhanging eaves, and air-conditioning on selected areas in the house,
are some of the attributes to be possessed by the houses curated in the
book. It also serves as a guide for anyone embarking on building an
ecologically-friendly home.
Welcome To Your
World: How The Built
Environment Shapes
Our Lives
Sarah Williams Goldhagen
As she takes us on a fascinating
journey through some of the world’s
best and worst landscapes, buildings
and cityscapes, author Sarah Williams
Goldhagen draws from recent research in cognitive neuroscience and
psychology to demonstrate how people’s experiences of the places
they build are central to their well-being, their physical health, their
communal and social lives, and even their very sense of themselves.
Hence, societies must use this knowledge to rethink what and how
they build: the world needs better-designed, healthier environments
that address the complex range of human individual and social needs.
Going
Beyond
Teaching
From national footballer to an educationist,
Brando Pillai shares a glimpse on what
drives him and his belief in ensuring children
receive the best education.
Text: Rina Ahmad Sapiuddin
There has not been much change to
the way that we teach our children in
schools for years. Large number of
students crowd a room during classes
as teachers lecture on as stressful
standardised exams are dished out at
the end of the year, sometimes twice a year! So does this
still work? Brando Pillai says probably not.
As Principal at Grace Homeschooling Resource
Centre (GHRC) and former national footballer, Brando is
of the opinion that if he had the opportunity to change
one thing about the education system it would be reducing
standardised testing. “I don’t think standardised testing is
a fair scale to determine if you’re smart or not. Teachers
may be forced to teach students how to take the test instead
of the subjects itself. It is designed for you to either blend
into society or be excluded, not enabling you to create any
sort of impact or change to society.”
The human mind is one of the most if not the most
powerful things on earth and its ability to think outside the
box and imagination is what Brando believes will lead a
positive change and impact on society. Confining the mind
into small spaces such as standardised testing may have an
adverse effect on producing future visionaries.
It has been one of GHRC tenets to instill values
and character education that prepares young men and
women to be contributing members of society amidst
the challenges of an ever-changing world. Every child
is important, shares Brando, hence the school’s small
classroom settings that aims to meet the needs of each
child whatever that need may be.
“I had moved to Tropicana before I made my
developing everytime I came home to visit. I find
it hard to relocate or to even entertain that idea!
It is a place I can safely call home. It’s peaceful
and trendy, and over the years of development
it has managed to keep that homey feel to the
neighbourhood. My family and I love it and we’ll
be here for quite some time.”
As one of the first homeschooling centres in the country
when it first started in 1998, GHRC was a homeschooling
centre that was an extension of the home in assisting parents
to fulfill a solid foundation with the use of a holistic approach
to education.
Today, with more than 150 students enrolled, the school
is currently transitioning into being an international school
as GHRC equip and provide children with what is required
to succeed in both their primary and secondary years of
education.
From Field To Classroom
So how did this teen star footballer (he was one of the youngest
contracted players in the Malaysian Premier League and the
Omani Professional Football League) immersed himself in
the education line as an adult? Growing up in Malaysia as
a child, Brando soon left the country for Brazil at the age of
12 to pursue his dream of becoming a pro footballer. As fate
would have it he returned to Malaysia a few years later before
spreading his wings to different parts of the world and finally
settling down in the US.
During his time abroad, Brando immersed himself
amongst the locals to experience the many different cultures
where he had to change and adapt to many different
environments all over again. It was during his student days
in New York that Brando got interested in education. As a
foreign student in America, he was prohibited from working
beyond the university campus. Not one to be daunted by such
a challenge, he soon applied to be a Graduate Assistant to
one of his professors at the Robert B. Willumstad School of
Business in Adelphi University.
What started off with just assisting in organising
paperwork, Brando found himself tasked with marking
papers, mentoring students, lecturing, developing case studies,
curriculum research and development and organising primary
events for the business school. Coupled with his experience
and dedication, he soon made his way back to Malaysia in
2016 to join GHRC.
negative impact on the child’s
development, disrupting their
ability to learn or to concentrate
on what is important.”
To stay connected to the latest in education, Brando
continues to stay in touch with his former colleagues in New
York. “Technology is an important teaching aid where visual
illustration is concerned, reducing paperwork, communicating
with students outside the classrooms, access to information
and when integrated properly, improve the school’s overall
efficiency,” he says.
“I believe nothing can beat the human touch, because
technology is just as good as the people using them. In today’s
world, technology is something unavoidable. It’s everywhere
as kids love it, it appeals to them and can spark an interest
in learning among the younger kids, more specifically, selflearning.
It allows for learning to continue beyond the physical
presence of a teacher and classroom setting.”
More Than Just A Teacher
Having been in the education line for several years now,
Brando admits that it hasn’t been without its own set of
challenges. One of it has been dealing with social issues such
as drugs, alcohol, sex, physical and cyber bullying as well as
peer pressure among young students. “Our job as educators
With over 100 years of artisanal and industrial experience,
Poltrona Frau furniture embodies a rich design history
while setting gorgeous trends for the future.
If you want to know how one luxury furniture
brand became the face and feel of some of
the world’s most iconic institutions, you’ll
have to go back a few decades to 1912. It
was in this year that Renzo Frau first started
Poltrona Frau in Turin, and in doing so
began a tale of love, luxury and leather that will last
till today.
The turn of the 20th century brought with it
the shedding of stiff Victorian sensibilities. Sensing
a shift in direction, Renzo, an ambitious upholster,
was ready and waiting with a new language of luxury.
The home of the future would be supple and strong,
smooth yet luxurious - qualities that only a true leather
artisan could bring into fruition.
Poltrona Frau was soon appointed supplier of the
Italian Royal Family, the Savoia dynasty in 1926 and
was furnishing all the most important houses, grand
hotels, the interiors for the 1928 Expo Turin, and the
lavish transatlantic Rex, pride of the Italian Navy. By
the 1930s, Poltrona Frau had become a status symbol.
Quality Comes First
From the beginning, it has always been about the
details. Renzo started producing voluptuous armchairs,
featuring plush capitonné details and pleated armrests.
Every aspect is lovingly crafted by hand, from the
delicate stitching to the positioning of the deep biconical
springs. These new armchairs revealed leather as an
ornate and decorative material, updating the boxy club
chair with a new sense of style. They were an instant
hit with Italy’s fashionable classes, and marked the start
of Poltrona Frau’s love affair with leather.
Over the years each collection of the brand begins
with a meticulous selection of the finest materials to
ensure lifelong quality and comfort. Poltrona Frau has
boldly reinvented classical designs for the modern era
and their exciting collection of designer sofas, chairs,
tables and complements promise to revitalise any
modern living setting. With over 100 years of artisanal
and industrial experience, Poltrona Frau furniture
embodies a rich design history while setting gorgeous
trends for the future.
The Come Together sofa’s design aims to bring families and friends closer together through a selection of stunning modular configurations.
Each Poltrona Frau furniture is designed for lifelong quality and comfort.
In Pursuit Of Design Perfection
Recently the brand worked with prominent Italian architect
and designer, Ludovica and Roberto Palomba in creating
three successful sofa collections. The collection, inspired
by the Beatles, first introduced the Let It Be sofa. This was
dedicated to young people who want to lounge on it and
have a relaxed talk with friends. The modular sofas can be
completed with shelves and storage units that expand their
functions. The structure and the soft down cushions appear to
be suspended on saddle-leather straps. The foot, unexpectedly
set back compared with the corner, exalts the sensation that
the seats are floating in space.
Next Ludovica and Roberto designed The Come
Together sofa. This sofa design has one clear aim - to bring
families and friends closer together through a selection of
stunning modular configurations. You can also customise the
sofa with various accessories that are versatile and functional.
These different elements are designed to connect with the
seats and create even more liveable relaxing areas where you
can read, work or share a coffee or pre-dinner drink.
TM | MAY/JUNE 2020
The terminal module, with a large double surface, is the
perfect place for your favourite books or a lamp. The unit
that joins the seats comes equipped with a hidden storage
compartment where the items you wish to keep close at hand
can be tidily stored out of sight. And for added storage, there
is a storage unit behind the backrest with a central push-pull
drawer that has a very spacious compartment that can also be
used to hide the wires of a lamp positioned on the shelf.
The third sofa design, Get Back, represents a return to
comfort, to a welcoming tailor-made space where you can
really feel at home. It features open lines, reclined backrests
that encourage relaxation, two types of armrest, numerous
modular elements to combine freely in lots of different
compositions. A very light overall effect created by the
suspended frame, supported by simple aluminium feet, the
sofa appears very light but at the same time, relaxing, with
wonderful comfort and has a super contemporary appeal.
A Distinctive Mark
The success of these sofas with Poltrona Frau bear Roberto’s
signature design of simple sophistication in providing a place
where people can meet, sit, and relax. In a recent interview,
Roberto said, “I study the evolution of human behaviour: on
one hand, we are isolating ourselves with mobile phones. On
the other hand, we try to recreate the connection with family
life. So I try to design a place where people can express this
way of life to have the perfect tool to do it. Not all simple
things are chic, but all chic things are simple.”
When the dynamic duo design for Poltrona Frau, they
aim to create something that is long-lasting and to bring the
nature of the brand into their design. Creating disassembleable
products is something they try to achieve with each
Poltrona Frau sofa where if one part of the sofa is damaged,
that part can be restored and substituted instead of replacing
the entire sofa.
It is this new consciousness in design and durability that
Poltrona Frau champions, looking beyond great craftsmanship
and aesthetic, quality and innovative materials to carry these
pieces across generations.
Only the finest materials
are selected to produce a
Poltrona Frau design.
The sophisticated and elegant Contessa chair from Okamura.
As work environments change in this new
normal, furniture design needs to evolve
to meet these new ways of working. People
and organisations have unique cultures, and
office space should bring this uniqueness
to life so people are inspired, creative and
engaged at work.
In the past couple of years, there has been a lot of research
done on the science of ergonomics, or the study of people’s
efficiency in their work environment. Scientists have been
studying the human body and how our office culture is affecting
the way it functions. Current research on seating recognises there
is no correct posture and no one right way to sit.
In fact, it’s been found that each of us has an individual
and personalised correct way to sit depending on a lot of factors
including the work that we do, the structure of our body, and
genetic makeup.
The ergonomic office furniture available today already
includes state of the art technology and innovative designs, and
is filled with exciting possibilities and creative innovations that
could drastically change the way we think about office furniture.
One such brand that has been blazing the trail is Okamura.
Got Your Back
For over 60 years, Okamura Corporation has been Japan’s
leading office furniture manufacturer and a benchmark for the
industry. Since its inception, Okamura’s motto has been ‘Quality
pays for itself.’ The company applies this philosophy throughout
the development of every Okamura product, including furniture
for offices.
In addition, Okamura has established a company-wide quality
control management system (all production offices throughout
Japan are ISO9001 certified) and an environmental management
system (Okamura Corporation is fully ISO14001 certified) in
order to ensure high quality products that are environmentally
friendly and comply with international standards.
As the “solutions company creating comfortable spaces”,
Okamura Corporation aims to continue to create and develop
new markets for its advanced product concepts. Together with
providing ideas for new work styles associated with the progress
of technology, and in addition to its e-business initiatives which
include alliances with other companies, Okamura is actively
working to expand into and establish bases in overseas markets.
The Freedom chair automatically adapts to the sitter, allowing them to move freely
from posture to posture.
The Freedom
chair is designed
by designer Niels
Diffrient.
It’s no secret that changing posture throughout the day
is essential to wellbeing in the office. What’s more, adapting a
posture that is appropriate for the task at hand relieves stress placed
upon the body. This is evident by the creation of its ergonomic
mesh chair, Contessa, which was developed in collaboration with
Giugiaro Design. Since 2002, Contessa has set the standard for
seating in office spaces around the world.
Now, she is reborn as Contessa Seconda where the flowing,
organic lines and charm of the original is united with new
engineering and functionality. With more colour options for the
mesh, fabric, and frame, this new design meets the demands of
the modern work style.
Okamura understands that people are shaped differently. To
accommodate different body types, the brand also developed a
unique and easily adjustable seat curve that supports a wide range
of back sizes. The back curve adjustment helps a chair like Sylphy
achieve personalised seating comfort for the whole office.
As the Back Curve Adjustment equips Sylphy to
accommodate any body type, you can pull down the levers on
both sides of the seat back where the curve becomes gentler to
fit a large build. Pulling the levers up creates a narrow curve to
support a smaller stature.
The stylish Contessa chair is extraordinarily comfortable due to its soft mesh and smart operation ergonomics.
A Chair Redefined
A piece of office furniture should be able to support the body,
support activity, promote movement, enable performance, be easy
to use, and do no harm to the user. Since everyone is different,
this means that every chair will have to be different. And this is
why the Freedom chair is unique.
Designed to complement any space and integrate effortlessly
into the modern office, the Freedom task chair offers comfort,
style and complete ease of use. Created by Niels Diffrient and
winner of more than 10 design awards, the Freedom task chair
epitomises Humanscale’s philosophy of simplicity, beauty and
ease-of-use.
It revolutionises task seating by using the laws of physics to
replace bulky and complex mechanisms to automatically adapt to
the body of each person who uses it. The unique weight sensitive
recline continuously adjusts the backrest resistance to your exact
body weight for a perfect custom fit. Whether you’re tall or small,
the Freedom Chair supports you at any recline. It also lets you
spontaneously change positions and postures throughout the day,
which is vital to long-term health and safety.
Meanwhile its refined and sculpted cushions are designed to
mimic the body’s natural contours and decrease pressure point
loads for premium comfort. Like all Humanscale chairs, the
Experience the world through the lens of
Singapore’s pioneer photographer and
Cultural Medallion recipient, Chua Soo
Bin, in a retrospective exhibition, Chua
Soo Bin: Truths & Legends at National
Gallery Singapore. Featuring close to
100 photographic works alongside archival materials, the
exhibition features Chua’s remarkable decades-long career.
Chua is known for his ability to capture definitive portraits
and sensitive images, built on his mastery of the craft and
understanding of his subjects.
It gives prominence to some of these pivotal works in the
development of photography in Singapore, a history which
is traditionally overlooked, and explores the timelessness and
intricacy of his portraiture against the backdrop of a thriving
social media photography scene today.
“Spotlighting the works of such artists and educating
the public of their artistic practices continue to be a priority
for the Gallery. While photography has traditionally been
under-researched in Singapore, it has played a significant
role in our art history. The iconic works of Chua Soo Bin
are excellent examples of the potential of photography as
an art form. It has been exactly three decades since Legends
was completed. We hope that this retrospective will raise
awareness of Chua’s significant contributions to Singapore’s
art scene as a photographer, a gallerist, art dealer and art
patron. At the same time, visitors will be inspired to learn
more about Singapore’s very own photographers and reflect
on the changing role of photography,” says Dr Eugene Tan,
Director of National Gallery Singapore.
Observe Iconic Portraits
The exhibition is anchored by Chua’s Legends series, which
comprises iconic portraits of 14 established Chinese ink
masters, offering a rare insight into the nuances of their daily
lives. It also includes his earlier pictorial and commercial
photographs to trace the development of his artistic practice.
The exhibition is made up of three thematic sections.
The first and largest part of the exhibition features the
Legends photographs. Exhibiting alongside the portraits of
the ink masters is a selection of ink paintings by these artists,
and notes by renowned Chinese art historian Liu Xilin, who
knew these men personally. Collectively, they add a new
dimension to the stories revealed in the portraits to enrich the
viewing experience.
The second section delves into the candid and informal
portraits taken by Chua of modern Chinese ink artist Wu
Guanzhong, over two decades. These photographs reveal
different aspects of Wu’s life, from his constant sketching to
his vivacious personality and love for his family, as well as the
rapport between artist and photographer.
The final section examines Chua’s life, from his early years
in advertising to the many ways in which he has contributed to
the art scene in Singapore. In addition to his earlier pictorial
and commercial photographs alongside archival materials,
visitors can also view a short 1989 documentary about Chua
to trace the development of his art practice and learn more
about his artistic process.
A Legend Is Born
Chua’s interest in arts and photography started from a young
age. He first took up weekend art classes at the Nanyang
Academy of Fine Arts in the 1950s under the tutelage of
Singapore artist Cheong Soo Pieng. Driven by his growing
interest in photography, the self-taught photographer
participated actively in the Photographic Society of Singapore
during the 1950s and 1960s, from organising exhibitions to
judging at various open-call competitions.
His photographs even earned him an Associateship of the
Royal Photographic Society in Great Britain in 1955, making
him the youngest associate in Singapore at the time! Chua’s
photographic practice was not always in fine arts. Instead, he
started out as a layout artist in the advertising industry in 1957
before rising through the ranks to become an Art Director and
worked on major international advertising campaigns.
He then started his own photography studio after
leaving advertising, and served both local and international
companies such as Singapore Airlines and Lanvin. Some of
the most enduring images of the Singapore Girl were taken
by him in the 1980s, and his works on the brand also won him
the top PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Award.
It was during a visit to China, then a newly opened-up
tourist destination, in the early 80s to photograph the land,
its people and culture to produce promotional material that
made an impact on Chua. By then an art collector, Chua
noticed the lack of proper photographic documentation of
the Chinese ink masters whose work he greatly admired. This
was when he conceived the plan to capture in photographs the
most senior and influential living artists of Chinese painting
and immortalise them in a book.
Chua then took these portraits to 15 cities across Asia,
including Beijing, Hangzhou and Hong Kong, giving the
global audience a deeper insight into these masters through
a Singaporean lens.
Here is how you can do so online!
Reading the news right now
is like walking through a
gloomy storm. There are
constant reports about
the increasing number
of COVID-19 cases
globally, as well as how it will impact the
economy. And this in turn affects the property
industry. Traditionally this is an industry that
has been seen as a physical transaction where
investors tend to visit showrooms, attend live
seminars, and speak physically to the parties
they deal with. However, the COVID-19
pandemic has caused this trend to go out
of favour as more people observe social
distancing rules.
Be Online Savvy
So how can property seekers stay safe while
proceeding with their property investment
plans? One way is to use proptech and
technological solutions, says Sheldon
Fernandez, Country Manager, PropertyGuru
Malaysia. Developers have already invested
in proptech solutions prior to the COVID-19
outbreak such as partnerships with online
sales platforms, virtual galleries and
augmented reality (AR) show units.
This allows property seekers to
“experience” them from the comfort of their
own homes via virtual tours. Innovations in
aerial technology such as drones have also
made it possible for property seekers to see
the view from a given unit, years before a
project is completed.
At Tropicana, consumers have the
opportunity to discover signature Tropicana
properties that includes spacious landed
homes, urban high rise abodes and
investment-grade commercial properties with
just a few clicks online.
They can browse online for the property
type that best suits them, find out more
about the project via e-brochure function
and videos, experience the show units and
properties virtually and register their interest
with their preferred project. A Tropicana
representative is always at hand to assist
consumers in making the right choice!
Property ownership is now easier, more
affordable and future-proof with 10 special
offers to help homebuyers own a Tropicana
property. This ongoing Tropicana 10-Ten
Campaign with more than 10 signature
Tropicana properties to choose from will
certainly be a perfect match for homebuyers!
A Hidden Opportunity
As necessary measures to stem the spread of
the pandemic were put into effect towards
the end of the first quarter of this year, the
property market expectedly saw a sharp drop
in activity across the board, adds Sheldon.
However, the moderation of price growth,
as well as transaction volumes and values in
recent years, may have had a buffering impact
on the market. An upswing in asking prices
in major metropolitan areas can also be seen
in the first quarter, pointing towards a rise in
interest in these areas as Malaysia takes a ‘softlanding’
approach post-MCO.
Thankfully, moves such as Bank
Negara Malaysia’s (BNM’s) reduction of
the Statutory Reserve Requirement Ratio to
2.00%, moratorium on financing payments
and OPR revision as well as the government’s
revision to voluntary EPF contribution
guidelines have eased financing concerns for
property seekers to a large degree.
With all these steps in place, we will soon
see a speedy recovery for the property industry
as people will be more confident to invest.
M.O.I. numbers. By reversing the 303 Stainless Steel rear piece to the front contact area, and using the 6061 Military Grade
Aluminum cutout to act as a key alignment guide, the INOVAI 6.0 feels and swings better than ever. Complemented with
newly sculpted contours and a new two-tone Platinum face finish with stunning Cobalt Blue anodised body.
Wilson DUO Soft+ Golf Balls
The world’s softest and longest premium golf ball now features
VelocitiCOR for supercharged performance. Advanced
materials in the core of the ball extract and amplify every ounce
of power from your swing, for more consistency and greater
distance. The new DUO Soft+ golf balls have been engineered
to deliver the distance you need, the feel you love and the
consistency you demand.
TaylorMade Truss
The design of this innovative Truss putter creates
multiple contact points on the topline and reduces
the amount of unsupported mass which is intended
to improve the stability of the putter face at impact.
While traditionally shaped putters with a single
contact point on the heel are susceptible to twisting
at impact, Truss putters provide exceptional
torsional stability and computer modeling shows
Truss twisting less on off-centre strikes (as compared
to previous generation blade). Having dual contact
points on the topline provides greater integrity on
strikes across the face, delivering the performance
of a high-MOI putter with the look of a blade or
traditional mallet.
TaylorMade Spider S
This uniquely shaped putter family provides the ultimate in stability through
high-MOI mallet designs. TaylorMade’s new Spider S is manufactured from
high-grade 6061 aluminium and 100-percent machine milled for precision
shaping. The square-frame putter head is outfitted with two 48g tungsten
sole weights that are strategically placed on the toe and the heel to help
stabilise the putter. A heavy tungsten backbar is used to further customise
swing weight based on the length of the putter. Coming in at 65g, the
backbar at the rear of the putter is designed to influence head weight, feel
and performance. With an MOI of 6,000-plus, Spider S offers the most
forgiving performance of any model in the Spider franchise.
historical magnificence.
A Historic Past
First opened in 1847, the Grand Hotel Golf Resort &
Spa has been known as the Queen of Southern Resorts
for years. What makes the Grand Hotel so unique is its
heritage of military service and as a gracious host to
American presidents, world leaders and generations
of families. The charming, 405-room resort is known
for exceptional service, Southern charm, majestic
oaks and beautiful sunsets over Mobile Bay.
Part of the Resort Collection on Alabama’s
Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail, the Grand
transformation in 2018 when it officially became
an Autograph Collection member of Marriott
According to Tony Davis, president of the
Robert Trent Jones Resort Collection, “Here, as it
has for over 170 years, the Grand Life beckons with
hospitality and warmth flowing through the resort
in cheerful abundance. With our Historic Hotels of
THE SWING
Relax at The Lakewood bar after an exciting game
The luxurious rooms and suites have been completely
made over, but still retains their character
The large fireplace at The Lakewood Club creates a
warm and welcoming ambience for guests
A New, Improved Look
Owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the Grand
Hotel Golf Resort & Spa’s transformation was designed by
Goodwyn Mills & Cawood and implemented by JESCO
Construction, both Alabama companies. The Grand Hotel’s
transformation blends the best of the resort’s Southern charm
and traditions with the modern amenities and technology
today’s guests demand. The resort’s iconic fireplace lobby, live
oaks and Bucky’s Lounge remain while new cabanas, splash
pad and restaurants were added. The design mix honours the
Grand Hotel’s history, traditions and sense of place.
Designed as an all-in-one destination, the Grand Hotel
Golf Resort & Spa features a full-service spa, two Robert
Trent Jones Golf Trail courses, seven restaurants and lounges,
two beaches, multiple pools and 37,000 square feet of
renovated meeting space on 550 lush acres along Mobile Bay.
The Grand Hotel’s cannon firing each afternoon honours the
resort’s history and salutes past and present military.
Rolling Fairways
The Grand Hotel presents a golf experience unlike any
other. Tight greens, spring-fed lakes, meandering streams,
and stands of mature trees make the 36 holes of Lakewood
both beautiful and challenging. The Lakewood Club had its
beginnings in 1944 when Perry Maxwell, designer of the
Tulsa Southern Hills Country Club and site of the 2001 U.S.
Open, brought his extraordinary skills to Lakewood, debuting
18 holes of golf, the first professional course to grace the area.
Under the direction of the Robert Trent Jones Trail team,
arguably the premier golf course architects in the world, 36
holes have emerged, partaking of their natural topography,
and offering genuine championship layouts designed to pose
major tests of golf for years to come.
Additional improvements have been made to the course
while staying within the corridor of the original design; the
Lakewood Club returning with improved putting conditions,
enhanced bunker play, and world-class updates centered
on making the game fun and exciting for both better and
beginner golfers. Throughout it all, the rich history of
Lakewood remains - a celebration of the game in all its glory.
THE TIME
The Wonders Of Time
Discover the latest in the world of watches as we celebrate
watchmaking excellence.
Text: Azalea A / Photos courtesy of the respective brands
Vintage Flair
Paying tribute to historical and classic Minerva
wristwatches from the 1940s and 1950s, Montblanc’s
Heritage timepieces combine the elegance of
watchmaking past with today’s bold design codes.
The new models feature fully polished 40mm and
42mm cases, curved horns and are fitted with boxstyled
sapphire crystal. for an elegant vintage look.
Reminiscent of the neo-dandy style, special attention
has been paid to dials with distinctive colours, such as
salmon, tobacco-brown, British-racing-green and they
include finishes such as a two-tone and slightly domed
dial and a Sfumato alligator leather strap. Like with all
the Heritage timepieces, these wristwatches are water
resistant to 50 meters.
An Elegant Icon
To epitomise daring creativity, here comes a watch known for its sensual curves,
the Piaget Limelight Gala. First created back in 1973, the watch has become
a symbol of elegance and fine craftsmanship. This year, Piaget introduced the
Limelight Gala Precious where the white gold bracelet featured on this modern
interpretation has been hand-engraved in the Palace Décor style, one of the
brand’s most iconic motifs. Only a few master artisans, who work in Piaget’s
“Workshop of Extraordinary Creations”, have the expertise to create this highly
regarded pattern. The dial is also made of white gold and is engraved using
the same Palace Décor technique. It takes due time to complete the engraving
on the dial and it is always carried out by the same engraver who decorates the
bracelet to ensure a uniform design.
Mission Ready
You can catch glimpses of this new watch on screen in the
upcoming Bond movie, No Time To Die. The new Omega
Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition has been built with
military needs in mind and was designed with input from
actor Daniel Craig himself. The 42mm timepiece has been
crafted from Grade 2 Titanium, which is used for the case
and titanium mesh bracelet with its innovative adjustable
buckle. To further decrease the weight of the watch, Omega
used “tropical” brown aluminium for the dial and bezel
ring. These elements have been given a classic look, thanks
to the vintage Super-LumiNova, which fills the diving
scale, blackened hands and indexes. On the caseback,
you’ll find a series of numbers, which follow the format for
genuine military-issue watches. “0552” is the code-number
specified for Navy personnel, with “923 7697” being the
number for a divers’ watch. The letter “A” is a code used to
signify a watch with a screw-in crown, while “007” is James
Bond’s iconic agent number. Finally, the number “62” is
the year of the very first James Bond film.
A Marvel Of Sophistication
Bell & Ross has partnered with the Renault F1 Team
since 2016 and has been studying the world of Formula
1 ever since. This coming together of two French brands,
united by their shared values of high performance and
high tech has led to the newly released watches with
a “Formula 1 of the Future” theme. The collection is
composed of four sports chronographs including this
exceptional Haute Horlogerie Tourbillon, the BR-X1
Tourbillon R.S.20. Available in a limited edition of just
20 pieces, the watch features a case cut from titanium,
a lightweight and resistant material used in Formula 1.
Protected by ceramic elements, a high-density rubber
insert improves handling while the fixed bezel houses
the minute track, and the rotating ring features a “stopstart”
indication. Its large calibre is regulated by a flying
tourbillon with a variable inertia balance. The barrel
spring, with manual winding, provides it with a power
reserve of 100 hours (hand indicator). The chronograph
function, clearly visible on the dial side, is driven by
a mono-pusher that activates a column wheel and the
watch also features a 30-minute instantaneous counter.
THE TIME
A True Smartwatch
Here is a watch that comes equipped with a heart rate monitor and GPS functionality so you can monitor your health daily. The Casio
GBD-H1000 is packed with five-sensor functions. It also has an optical sensor that can measure heart rate by detecting the blood flow
under the skin, a triple sensor that measures altitude/barometric pressure, compass bearing and temperature, and an acceleration sensor
that measures step count and distance traveled. This watch also comes with GPS functionality that acquires location information. You
can connect your watch with a dedicated app on your smartphone to manage measurement data history such as calories burned and
logged travel. The watch itself features a high-definition, memory-in-pixel (MIP) LCD with high-contrast, a bezel configuration that
is easy to operate even without looking at the buttons, large non-slip buttons, a curved back cover that carefully considers the back of
the hand, and a soft urethane band.
Be Bold
A reinterpretation of the art of tattoo for women, the Hublot Big Bang
One Click Sang Bleu adopted the codes of its male alter ego, the Big
Bang Sang Bleu which was launched in 2016. To add to its versatility,
the strap features the “One Click” system – a patented attachment
system to easily change the strap that matches your style, be it for day
or night. This bedazzled 39mm case is available in polished 18K King
Gold or polished stainless steel, with an engraved design by Maxime
Plescia-Büchi. The bezel is set with 48 diamonds and 6H-shaped
Titanium screws. The elegant timepiece also features the HUB1710
self-winding movement driven by 166 components and 27 jewels, at a
frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a 50-hour power reserve.
Available in feminine shades of light pink and medium grey, made of
shiny calf strap with black rubber, with an 18K King Gold and blackplated
stainless steel or stainless steel deployant buckle clasp.
A Modern Twist
Drawing on all the great elements that made the 1962
original a roaring success, and using signature materials
that make a Rado timepiece unique comes the new
Captain Cook collection. Tradition meets innovation with
the Rado Captain Cook Automatic Bronze 42mm
timepiece in a green dial and bronze case combo. The
technical specifications of the watch are also updated to
modern standards to guarantee improved accuracy and
reliability. The watch sunburst dials and matching bezels
come in high-tech ceramic while the oversized indexes
and arrow-shaped hands are treated with white Super-
LumiNova.
Go On A Journey
The 46mm Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Le Petit Prince”
features the characteristic blue dial which has become the
signature trademark of IWC’s special editions in tribute
of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous literary
work. The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured
52110-calibre movement and features an efficient Pellaton
automatic winding system with parts made from black or
white ceramic. With the help of two barrels, it builds up a
reserve of 7 days. The display at “3 o’clock” provides an
indication of the remaining power reserve. The Big Pilot’s
Watch has a date display at “6 o’clock” and the central
seconds essential in any watch used for flying. With its
soft-iron inner case, it is optimally shielded against the
influence of magnetic fields. This Pilot’s Watch has an
engraving on the rear of the little prince with his cape
and sword.
Herbivore Botanicals Rose Quartz
Facial Roller Collection
Made from ethically mined Aventurine Jade, this Rose
Quartz facial roller from Herbivore Botanicals utilises
ancient Chinese methodology to stimulate lymphatic
drainage while massaging skin and toning underlying
muscles. A perfect way to supplement your daily skin care
ritual, not only does the texture of the stone feel infinitely
cool and soothing but the rolling motion helps eliminate
accumulated toxins, ‘lifts’ your face and neck muscles and
helps to bring relief from headaches. Use from forehead
to décolleté and you’ll soon see a difference in the texture,
tone and clarity of your complexion. Place in the fridge to
provide extra cooling and depuffing effects to the skin and
then press a couple of drops of your favourite facial oil
onto the targeted area to help the roller glide across skin
even more fluidly.
Tatcha The Essence Plumping
Skin Softener
This might be the skin essence that your skin needs. The clear, lightweight
fluid of Tatcha The Essence Plumping Skin Softener honours the
traditional Japanese practice of using an essence to lay the foundation
for your skincare. It has a formula that’s 98.7 percent pure fermented,
anti-ageing superfoods which is the proprietary Hadasei-3, a powerful
trifecta of green tea, rice, and algae. The natural fermentation process
produces lactic acid to smooth and resurface, so the essence softens skin
as it hydrates and sets the stage for serums and moisturisers to come.
Refresh And
Reinvigorate
While Thai Odyssey is all about rest and relaxation, the business itself is the product
of hard work. Founder and Group Managing Director, Dr Leon Chuah explains how
he got his unique business idea off the ground.
Stress has nowadays become a part of
our lives. To relieve this stress, many of
us have greater than ever expectations
from the personal care services that we
get. We now consider our visit to the spa
as not just a beautification process but a
spiritual getaway, to uplift our soul and feel good about
ourselves.
To ensure a truly serene experience, the spa
needs to connect with you; a connection where every
miniscule detail matters. The experience starts from
the moment you enter the spa door. How the staff
greets you, ambience of the waiting room, how well
the spa understands your requirements, and then
precisely delivering what you wanted, everything is an
experience. And that has been the cornerstone of Thai
Odyssey’s success.
Founder and Group Managing Director of Thai
Odyssey, Dr Leon Chuah ventured into the spa and
wellness industry 16 years ago, a road less travelled by
others to establish an enterprise which has now grown to
become one of Malaysia’s biggest chain of massage spas.
A Winning Formula
It all started when Dr Leon was first introduced to
Thai massage services. “At a Thai expo, Thai massage
services were offered at one of the booths as part of
the event activities. That was the time when I was
exposed to Thai massage and good Thai therapists. It
totally changed my life and my business career. After
the expo, the six therapists came to my office and asked
if I could help them establish themselves in Malaysia. I
said ‘yes’,” shares Dr Leon looking back.
He quickly opened a mobile kiosk with only 200 sq/
ft of service space at the corridor of a shopping centre.
Surprisingly, the response to the massage therapies
was so good he had to utilised a numbered system to
manage patrons. That was when Dr Leon realised that
Thai massage services could be a viable business.
However, Dr Leon said that despite having
challenges coming across from all corners, with many
thinking he was mad for venturing into this business
and the bad rep that the industry faced at the time,
he was determined to make it work. Six months later,
he moved into a proper shoplot and the business has
experienced growth ever since.
“We want our customers to feel that they have
entered into a sanctuary that is peaceful, calm and
restful, as if they have left the world of chaos and
stress behind for a brief journey into tranquility. Apart
from indulging in an authentic Thai massage, at Thai
Odyssey, we emphasise on Thai friendly hospitality,
cordial service culture, aesthetic arts and a serene
environment - a desired total wellbeing respite package,
only Thai Odyssey can offer,” says Dr Leon.
Today, Thai Odyssey has more than 70 outlets in
Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and China,
and very soon in Taiwan and Vietnam, changing along
the way the concept and perception of a wholesome
massage experience. Over the years, thanks to Thai
Odyssey’s hard working colleagues, the brand has won
more than 30 local and international awards.
GAME CHANGER
Thai Odyssey is serious about changing the
subservient image that plague many spa therapists. To
help elevate the image of the industry, Dr Leon has
taken the lead to form a committee which comprises of
Thai Odyssey members and key people from the IPEC
Certification Bureau to work on the spa industry’s
first ever ISO Certification effort catered to Thai Spa
therapists. With this accreditation, the therapists will
be recognised and valued. This will assure customers
of quality and safety, increasing their confidence with
the spa services. At the same time, be able to raise the
standard of all spa brands in ASEAN and beyond.
“When Thai Odyssey was recognised in the
Malaysia Book of Records to be the largest Thai Spa
operator in Malaysia, I knew we had successfully
transformed the image of the massage service industry
to be a genuine business for all to enjoy,” says Dr Leon
proudly.
The Road Ahead
Early this year, Thai Odyssey went through a brand
vision revamp. It now positions itself to play the
pivotal role as a leader in Thai Traditional Massage
that is recognised widely. Their massage therapies
enhanced with traditional methods and combined with
new scientific-based products with new stress-busting
relaxation techniques, specially caters to the satisfaction
of discerning patrons.
According to Dr Leon, Thai Odyssey has also
been advancing their spa products with efficacious
ingredients and products from South East Asia to sales
online and at their outlets. The most talked about
progress and excitement is Thai Odyssey’s IPO launch
in the very near future.
To stay current on spa and wellness trends and
customer behaviour, Dr Leon shares that the advent
of a global network system has helped the brand
tremendously. With a presence in the cyber world,
the brand is constantly kept up-to-date with the latest
development. Says Dr Leon, “I am also very fond of
traveling and enjoy myself at various spa destinations
when visiting different countries. While traveling, I get
to meet many travellers from different backgrounds and
am able to learn about their spa preferences. It is this
first-hand knowledge that has also helped us to enhance
our understanding of the spa and wellness trend, at the
same time, learning about customers’ expectations.”
Since starting Thai Odyssey, Dr Leon has won
many awards for the company and himself. Some of his
proudest moments have included receiving the awards
for Best Spa Entrepreneurship Award, Best Leadership
Award and one year ago, he finally received his
Honorary Doctorate degree in Innovation and Spa
Entrepreneurship.
Growing up in an ordinary family, Dr Leon
faced a lot of hardships. However, he was fortunate
to have mentors in his life that helped him along the
way including his mentor, Tropicana’s founder Tan
Sri Dato’ Danny Tan. “I am forever indebted and
grateful to him for constantly ingraining in me all the
possibilities that life could offer. That could be one of
the reasons why I remained steadfast and committed till
this day,” says Dr Leon humbly.
Armed with the belief of always striving for
excellence, this dynamic entrepreneur has now
set his sights on the arts and culture of the East.
“Since we opened Thai Odyssey in China in the last
couple of years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn
more about our rich Eastern cultures, especially its
art and its healthy living and wellness ways. Now,
I spend a considerable amount of time learning
this age-old health inspiring information so that in
the near future, we can bring forth a valuable and
new concept to our next dream business venture -
Oriental Wellness Art Spa.”
“Apart from indulging in an authentic
Thai massage, at Thai Odyssey, we
emphasise on Thai friendly hospitality,
cordial service culture, aesthetic arts
and a serene environment - a desired
total wellbeing respite package, only
Thai Odyssey can offer.”
THE EXPERIENCE
In this period of uncertainty and isolation, a special initiative to support
As the world faces a health crisis, the
global IWC Schaffhausen family stands
together with a meaningful initiative
called Time Well Shared. Through
this initiative, IWC employees, brand
ambassadors and partners share their
time, knowledge, experience and passion through digital
channels.
“In these extraordinary times, we would like to
reach out to people with a message of solidarity, hope
and positivity. Through our spontaneous initiative, we
want to offer a new way of staying in touch with the IWC
family. We aim to encourage and inspire everybody to
make good use of the time, to be here for one another,
and to develop and grow stronger,” says Christoph
Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen.
Virtual Get Together
Time Well Shared encompasses online lectures, speeches
and webinars and includes contributions from IWC
brand ambassadors like Tom Brady, Fabian Cancellara,
David Coulthard and Maro Engel and partners such
as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1, Tottenham
Viewers even had the opportunity to follow Esben
prepared a spring-inspired dish. The video, available
at IWC’s global Instagram TV channel showcased
many years collaborated with IWC, connecting haute
horlogerie with haute cuisine. Quality craftsmanship and
in the manufacture of IWC watches.
A Novel Read
Another of the Time Well Shared activities included
a reading project of The Little Prince by Antoine de
Saint-Exupéry. No other novel has been translated into
as many languages and read by as many people from
different countries and cultural backgrounds as “The
Little Prince”. This famous literary work follows a young
prince on his journey to different planets, addressing
themes such as loneliness, isolation, friendship, and love.
During these challenging times, the story is a powerful
reminder that the best things in life are the simplest ones
and that real wealth is caring for and giving to others.
Channelling this spirit, IWC brand ambassadors
came together to read from the book. The series was
kicked off by Indian actress Sonam Kapoor and joined
by Lebanese-British TV presenter Raya Abirached,
Tunisian actress Hend Sabri, Italian actor Pierfrancesco
Favino, and Chinese actor Zhang Ruo Yun. The original
illustrations from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, including
some never-before-shown works, accompanied the
readings.
All contributions are accompanied by a button
to make voluntary donations in support of Save The
Children, which aims to strengthen its programmes that
protect children and families in countries that are hit by
the virus, increase support for national health systems,
and raise awareness among parents and caregivers on
how to provide psychosocial support to children.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
The True Heroes
We salute and appreciate every one of the country’s health frontliners
as they work tirelessly to help keep us safe. We thank you all for your
unwavering dedication.
Photos from Ministry of Health
In just a matter of weeks, our world has started to look like
a vastly different place. Something that may have seemed
like a faraway problem is now on our Malaysian shores
as rising coronavirus infections lead to indefinite school
closures, mandates to work from home, travel restrictions,
cancellation of major sports and entertainment events to
empty shopping malls and streets.
Malaysia’s health experts and government officials have taken
tremendous steps and initiatives to ensure that we practice social
distancing in order to flatten the curve of the outbreak. This is
to prevent a surge of infected patients that might overwhelm our
hospitals. In other words, that means we stay at home and limit
nearly all in-person social interactions.
As we fight the COVID-19 outbreak; doctors, nurses and
healthcare personnel have become the unwitting heroes of this
global pandemic. More than 5.9 million people worldwide, from
Singapore to Mauritius to New York, have been infected with this
pandemic and have claimed more than 377, 600 lives. On a positive
side, more than 2.9 million people worldwide have also recovered.
At The Frontlines
Working round the clock to curb the spread of this
pandemic, healthcare frontliners are dealing with a huge
influx of patients, while also facing a lack of equipment in
many cases and the fear of becoming infected themselves.
Often, they face heartbreaking decisions while treating
their patients.
Many of these health frontliners have left their
loved ones at home and have given up time and comfort
to be at the frontlines. The sincere dedication shown by
every member of the health workforce in the face of this
overwhelming pandemic is nothing short of amazing.
Those at Malaysia’s Ministry of Health also
continue to do everything they can to ensure the safety of
all Malaysians. In turn, every Malaysian has a role to play
in battling this pandemic, that is to help flatten the curve
by staying at home and limiting social interactions.
By flattening the curve, we avoid overwhelming our
medical professionals with a surge of cases, buying time
for researchers to seek treatments and develop vaccines,
and for hospitals and health facilities to build up testing
procedures and treatment capacity to be in place.
Cough and sneeze
A National Hero
The nation calls him a national hero, but for Health
Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham
Abdullah, the honour goes to all the healthcare workers
and frontliners battling COVID-19 in the country, noting
they have been “nothing short of amazing”. The health
workforce and frontliners, both in the public and private
sector, have stepped up and are giving their all in trying
to combat COVID-19, he shared during the ministry’s
daily press briefings.
Recently China Global TV Network listed Datuk
Dr Noor as one of the three leading doctors in the
world leading the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19,
alongside America’s Dr Anthony Fauci and New
Zealand’s Dr Ashley Bloomfield. These three medical
professionals have received heaps of praise over the past
weeks and months for being a “calming” and “trustable”
source of information and facts during the pandemic to
their countrymen.
Thank you to our health frontliners!
Following the unique touch of the restaurant’s cuisine, each
in-house by Quay Kar Ve, General Manager of 88 Armenian
Hotel and Head Bartender at Copper Bar and Restaurant.
One unique drink on the menu is Princess Hang Li
who was given in marriage to the Sultan of Malacca in the
Served in a delicate China teacup, the elegant presentation
belies its strength with Rittenhouse rye whisky, soursop, honey
flower tea and passion fruit foam providing quite a punch.
“At Copper, we take pride in crafting our cocktails using
only the best range of spirits. We aim to offer our guests a
unique experience through our careful selection of wine, beer
and spirits. Copper Bar and Restaurant is located at the heart
history and culture. To give our guests a full experience of the
locality and heritage site of our bar, I like to infuse and mix in
local flavours into my cocktails,” shares Kar Ve.
Copper Bar was placed Top 4 for Bar of the Year, Penang
category in DRiNK Magazine’s The Bar Awards Kuala
and placed in the Top 4 for Bartender of the Year, Penang.
“Being new to the scene, we are constantly improving our
THE DRIVE
The Other
Side Of Dawn
Meet what is considered to be the world’s most seductive open-top
motoring experience - the Rolls Royce Dawn Aero Cowling.
Text and photos courtesy of Rolls Royce
TM | MAY/JUNE 2020
104
Not simply a luxurious
convertible, the 2020
Rolls Royce Dawn Aero
Cowling is perhaps the
ultimate in open-top
motoring. Named after
the ultra-rare 1950s Silver Dawn, its current
contemporary aesthetic appeals to a niche
group of successful and dynamic individuals
of the world.
To add yet more stunning aspects and
exclusivity to this already remarkable motor
car, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective of
designers, engineers and craftspeople created
a removable Aero Cowling. This modern and
meticulously constructed piece converts the
aesthetic of Dawn into a two-seat roadsterstyle
motor car with an extended tonneau
cover sitting atop the two rear seats. This
alters the Dawn’s person by creating a highershouldered
silhouette and heightens its sense
of dynamic intent.
You’ll be happy to note that the Aero
Cowling, which can be fitted and removed
at your discretion, encloses the rear seats
beneath a beautifully hand-made cover, with
two cowls rising from the leading edge of the
tonneau area, to a point just behind each front
seat headrest. The form of the cowls were
precisely sculpted to funnel air gracefully over
the cabin, so to enhance driver comfort.
105 MAY/JUNE 2020 | TM
THE DRIVE
Each cowl is equipped with a pair of
lockable leather-lined storage compartments
for personal effects, while the cover itself is
made of carbon fibre and aluminium. This
choice of materials makes Aero Cowling
incredibly light yet strong. The lids of the
cowls are swathed in the finest Rolls-Royce
leather, perfectly matching the interior of the
car as commissioned by the owner.
Luxury Refined
The Aero Cowling is not designed to simply
transform the appearance of the Dawn,
but to complement it. Bespoke canvases for
colour and detail atop the cowl lids allow for
a harmonious flow of colour between motor
car and tonneau.
Originally presented at the 2018 Geneva
Motor Show, the first Dawn Aero Cowling
was matched perfectly with the Cassiopeia
Silver and Casden Tan colour scheme of the
motor car it adorned. The central spine was
finished in exposed carbon fibre, showcasing
its lightweight structure, with a weave bookmatched
to a contemporary chevron graphic.
This intricately detailed spine harmoniously
ran down the centre of the car, through the
centre console and onto the dashboard.
TM | MAY/JUNE 2020
106
Since its launch, Aero Cowling has
enhanced many Bespoke commissions. One
of the first was the Bayside Dawn Aero
Cowling, commissioned by a customer in
Yokohama, Japan, to pay tribute to his
seafaring home city. It matched cutting-edge
technical fibre with open-pore teak Canadel
panelling, drawing inspiration from yacht
decking. The Aero Cowling’s colourway
evoked blue seas and white sails in the finest
traditions of Yokohama Bay.
Most recently, Aero Cowling adorned
Dawn Silver Bullet, revealed earlier this
year. Inspired by rare, glamorous and rakish
roadsters of the 1920s, this motor car’s
tonneau was finished with an ultra-metallic
silver-painted central spine and a vapourblasted
titanium windbreak, etched with the
Silver Bullet nameplate and silhouette.
Aero Cowling is able to amplify a more
striking aesthetic as well as elegantly contribute
to its form. Arguably, its boldest appearance
was part of the marque’s 2019 Pebble Beach
Collection where it was incorporated into a
Dawn Black Badge finished in striking coral.
This new pastel colour carried over to the
Aero Cowling itself, creating an appearance
reminiscent of the Speedster two-seater
body style so closely associated with the US’s
western seaboard.
Situated in a lush natural setting, A White-throated
Tee Box Tropicana Golf & Country Resort (TGCR) is a
world-class golf course that is designed to bring out the
best in any player. The 27-hole golf course is in harmony
with nature, blending seamlessly with its scenic landscape.
Playing golf here is a feast for the senses with well-maintained fairways
and greens, against natural settings of trees, , lakes and fruit trees.
To maintain this harmony between the golf club and natural
surroundings, TGCR works hard to maintain and promote the
surrounding sustainability by constantly upgrading and improving the
landscape to cater to both the avid golfers and the local flora and fauna.
Any golfer at TGCR will tell you that they would have chanced upon
some interesting birds or animals that they don’t usually see anywhere
else while playing golf. This is because the golf club is home to a variety
of birds and mammals such as the Asian Glossy Starling, Brahminy
Kite, Brown Shrike and Forest Kingfisher to name a few. Long Tailed
Macaque, Asian Water Monitor Lizard, Common Tree Shrew are also
a common sight here. All of these resident animals help to balance the
ecosystem around the golf course where they co-exist with the natural
surroundings.
Further marvels of birds that can be found at TGCR are the Asian
Openbill Storks. These birds get their name from the natural open space
between the curved inner surfaces of the mandibles in adults where the gap
between the mandibles increases with age. Openbills are migratory birds
which generally move between South Asian countries (India, Sri Lanka,
Bangladesh) and Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar and Thailand).
"I am as light as a feather" says the Brown Shrike on a tall grass
Meanwhile golfers can sometimes catch sight of the Painted Storks with their distinctive feathers in their natural habitat. Predominately
non-migratory and making only local movements, Painted Storks forage in flocks in shallow waters along rivers or lakes. They immerse their
half open beaks in water and sweep them from side to side and snap up their prey of small fish that they sense by touch. As they wade along
they also stir the water with their feet to flush hiding fish. They nest colonially in trees, often along with other water birds.
This course also includes a number of water features as a part of the hazards golfers have to negotiate. These water features are
often fringed by areas of wet grassland and it attracts a variety of animals and other water birds. Birds will breed in the vegetation along
the edges of these features, which support rich insect assemblages fed on by the birds. Characteristic birds found in such areas include
Storks and Kingfishers.
As the landscape of TGCR is surrounded by greenery, it is not surprising to see an array of colours from flowering trees and shrubs
spread across the clubhouse and greens. Potted Bougainvillea and Frangipani plants are strategically placed around the club to provide
an aesthetic pleasure for all to enjoy. There are also coconut trees which provide coconuts to thirsty golfers at the club’s coffee house as
well as the majestic flowering trees such as Red Flames, Yellow Flames, Yellow Bell and Thalia that provide splash of colour and shelter
for animals.
TGCR has started a Wetland Environment project in the golf course recently and according to Herman Tan, Executive Director of
TGCR, “The project started in the resort at the 3 rd Lake at the East Course 1, 3 rd Lake at the East Course 2 and 2 nd Lake at the West Course
3 since early May and this will be replicated throughout the 27-hole golf course. These wetlands will help control floods and they are vital to
the ecosystems providing a habitat for animals and plants. We also have a variety of water plants comprising of Typha Angustifolia, Scirpus
Validus, Hanguana Malayana and Lepironia Articulata incorporated into the ponds together with fishes such as Tilapia, Haruan and Grass
Carp to nurture the biodiversity of the ponds. Other than the wetlands, we are also planning to construct and erect bird houses at strategic
locations to attract more birds to the golf course. These bird houses will provide nesting and roosting opportunity for various types of birds
and in a way, it is also an environmentally sound way to lower the insect population which will benefit everyone in the area.”
At TGCR, the aim is to exist with nature and provide a safe haven for the habitats while preserving the harmony of its surroundings.
Of all the islands in Asia, Bali has
to be one of the most popular
all over the world. This famous
Indonesian island boasts some
Like picking a star from the never-ending night
And among the countless villa resorts on this
