Alpirsbach monastery is one of the few surviving monasteries in south western Germany built in the spirit of

the Hirsau Reforms. This Benedictine Monastery was built out of a combination of religious piety and considerations

of local power politics at the end of the eleventh Century, at a time when the Pope and the German

Emperor were involved in a power struggle. During the Reformation, Alpirsbach Monastery was converted

into a convent school. You can still get some fascinating insights into everyday life there in those times. You

can also see some items of clothing from the time of Albrecht Dürer in the convent museum. They are the

only ones of this type in the world. Subject to change without notice.

C 3

The Hochrheinmuseum at Schloss Schönau in Bad Säckingen is truly unique, housing several

exhibition zones, including the “Scheffel Rooms”, and the famous trumpet museum, showcasing

over 400 years of trumpet history. The building also houses a small local museum, as

well as an archaeological collection.

The main museum of the Association of Swabian-Alemannic Carnival Guilds houses a yearround

exhibition of around 300 carnival figurines, as well as important collections of masks

from Switzerland and southwest Germany in three impressive domed buildings. With a set

of VR-goggles, you can immerse yourself in an array of diverse carnival customs in the 360°

cinema. There are also numerous interactive multimedia exhibits to make for an unforgettable

visit for the whole family.

D 5

If your children want to find out more about how people in the Murg Valley used to live, you

must visit the Fairy Tales Museum in Baiersbronn - Oberdorf. In his fairytale “The Cold Heart,”

Wilhelm Hauff tells us a lot about the lives of raftsmen, charcoal burners, glass makers and

timber merchants. For adults, there is a literature department, a reading zone as well as a

listening and video station.

Buhlbach Glassworks Culture Park is a living record of the time when these glass works were the

most important ones in the Black Forest, in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and it is almost completely

barrier-free. One fact which very few people today are still aware of is that the the worldwide

success, which these glass works enjoyed, was due to its development of the pressure-resistant

champagne bottle. The buildings still standing represent the last-remaining historical glass works

buildings in the Black Forest. You can either make your own way around them or use one of our

audio guides. Tours also available outside of business hours and during winter months.

Ettenheim, the most southerly town in the Ortenau region, has many charms to offer to

visitors. Splendid half-timbered buildings, town gates adorned with coats of arms, elaborate

statues in the fountains, old homesteads, sawmills and flour mills are just waiting to be

discovered! Together with the church of Saint Bartholomew, built high above the town, they

make Ettenheim, which was once the seat of the prince bishops of Strassburg, a lovely little

town with real baroque flair.

There are some great views from the Feldberg tower! At 1,493 metres above sea level, the

Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest region. The view from the top of the

Feldberg tower makes the trip well worth it. From the viewing platform on the 11th floor, you

can enjoy the unique panoramic view of the southern Black Forest and the Alps. In addition,

the protection association for the Black Forest ham producers has set up a museum to

honour this local speciality on the first floor of the tower.

Cuckoo clocks are always on trend and here in the Black Forest you will always be following the trail of this cult

object. Where does the cuckoo clock actually come from? Why does the cuckoo ”live” in the little house? These

are just some of the topics covered in this collection of clocks which contains so much tradition and is the

largest in Germany. During your tour you will discover timepieces from every period in history - right up to the

latest atomic clocks. You also get info, videos, and online games in three languages on your smartphone via

The Gengenbach Timber Rafting and Transport Museum is housed in the former signalman’s

house at the junction of the Kinzig river, Black Forest rail line and the Black Forest Road. The

The Hüsli is an exceptionally good museum

and this type of house epitomises the Black

Forest. Its traditional hipped roof with low

eaves, its cosy rooms and parlours with painted

ceilings and wall cupboards, its old doors

and floors all help to make the Hüsli a complete

architectural work of art in itself. The

house was built in 1912 by the concert singer

Helene Siegfried as her summer residence.

She was born in Lörrach but later went on to

live in Berlin. With the meticulous passion of a

collector, she spent years assembling her

collection of items from old farmyards, pieces

of farm equipment and art objects from the

High Black Forest.

The Hüsli provides a good insight into the way

of life of the people who lived in the High

Black Forest in previous centuries. Here, original

interiors with tiled stoves, traditional

furniture, clocks, handicrafts and plates can be

seen. There is also an inviting, magnificent

garden. The Hüsli achieved worldwide fame

when it was featured in the “Black Forest

Clinic” TV series.

The Erdmannshöhle in the village of Hasel is one of the oldest flowstone caves in Germany.

The total length of the cave has been measured at 2,185 metres and the section open to the

public is 360 metres long. Some enormous stalactites in the cave enhance its fascinating

ambience. One of them is both the oldest and the biggest stalactite in Germany at over four

metres in height and more than two metres in width. It is estimated to be some 135,000

years old.

The Black Forest Costume Museum contains over 100 life-size figures dressed in traditional

regional costumes, housed in large display cases. These are supplemented with well-crafted

The straw-roofed Klausenhof dates from the year 1424 and is thus one of the oldest houses

The exhibition housed in the former German home of the Schweitzer family forms a good

introduction to the lives of Albert and Helen Schweitzer. Special emphasis has been placed

house itself is an important exhibit and its condition is almost unchanged since the

Schweitzers lived here.

both the history and present of the Three Countries Region on the Upper Rhine. In addition, it presents several major

Experience more than a thousand years of mining history in a mysterious underground world. You

enter the visitor mine after watching a short video presentation. The tunnel leads into the mountain

at ground level over a distance of 600 m and is therefore accessible to everyone. In addition to some

old mining equipment, you will discover a variety of different types of rocks and stones. The sophisticated

lighting concept illustrates very effectively the enormous quantities of ore which were once

mined here. In 2020 the mine celebrates its 50th anniversary as the oldest mine of its kind.

Experience the Golden City of Pforzheim! During the city tour you will get to know the special highlights

of this city a little better. It was here that around 250 years ago, the foundations were laid for

the jewellery and clock-making industries. Relax as you listen to the stories told by the city tour guide

and learn some interesting and valuable information about the “Golden City” of Pforzheim. Once you

have completed the tour of the city, it is well worth visiting the Schmuckwelten - the “worlds of

jewellery” experience, the Technology Museum or the Gasometer with its unique 360° views.

Germany‘s first museum dedicated to the history of literature reception. It was inaugurated in 1998

in memory of Hans Jacob Christoph von Grimmelshausen, the former village mayor and poet of

Renchen (1667-1676), and since 2015 has had a modern building extension with exhibition space used

for special exhibits and readings, concerts, and presentations. The original building features a significant

collection with three floors of artistic interpretations and illustrations from the 20th Century

exploring the Baroque poet’s literary creations, especially his novel “Simplicius Simplicissimus.”

known as Türkenlouis after his many defeats of Turkish armies) and his Baroque earthworks in the southern Black

Forest; Professor H. Th. Baumann’s Design Collection; Hebel and Schopfheim, featuring the life of Johann Peter

Hebel, the father of Alemannic dialectic poetry and the “Kalliope” music machine dating from around 1880.

The first documented reference to the Todtmoos-Mättle mine dates from 1798. Pyrrhotite

and nickel ore were mined here in opencast pits until 1937 before being processed for commercial

purposes. The “Hoffnungsstollen” mine was reopened as a visitor mine in 2000. The

entire mining area was reconfigured in a family-friendly way such that even the deep tunnel

is accessible to babies’ prams or wheelchair users. Tours unfortunately cannot accommodate

multiple wheelchairs.

Please listen up! With one of the largest collections in Europe, the Black Forest Museum in Triberg charts the

development of the Black Forest clocks and mechanical musical instruments - from cuckoo clocks and barrel

organs right up to orchestrions which imitate an entire orchestra! The Black Forest Museum illustrates the

culture, customs and enthusiasm for technology of the inhabitants of the Black Forest. Traditional local costumes

and handicrafts are realistically presented and are set against the different minerals found in the tunnels of the

mines and a model railway recreates the journey across the mountains between Hornberg and St. Georgen.

C 4

This museum is housed in the original railway depot buildings right next to the Danube in

Tuttlingen. This site was constructed in 1933 and can be visited today with its seven-slot

roundhouse, a fully functioning 21-metre railway turntable and the coal-feed systems. The

4-hectare exhibition space contains some 26 steam locomotives and many other exhibits

from the era of steam railways. The collection of model railways has been archived.

The increasingly popular Escape Rooms involve solving puzzles together in a locked room. It

seems obvious that a puzzle-based adventure is twice as much fun if it can take place outdoors

and in nature. The traditional treasure hunt is alive and well! This game is aimed at

children between the ages of 7 and 12, and is ideal for groups. The game is designed to dispense

with technology and to provide an “analogue” experience in nature, with the help of a

backpack!

D A 52

No matter whether you love ice skating, curling, ice shows or ice discos - there is something

for everyone here. You can skate around the rink listening to the accompanying music or

even have a go at curling! We look forward to welcoming you!

Coral reef wonderland

The 360° panorama of Australia’s coral reefs

presents these unique underwater worlds in

all their fragile beauty and complexity.

This visitor centre comprises 70 square metres of exhibits explaining how a fish ladder is

constructed and how it works. 30 different species of fish take advantage of this fish ladder to

overcome the differences in height of the river at this barrage. A large aquarium also houses

an ever-changing array of species of fish. There is even a little pool in which you can feel, feed

and even stroke the fish! The audio guides provided will also explain why it is not possible for

you to see fish for every single minute of your tour. Guided tours for groups possible.

The Schauinsland is Freiburg’s own local mountain.

At an altitude of 1,284 m, ascending it is an awesome

leisure activity at any time of year. The

Schauinslandbahn, Germany’s longest gondola

cable car route (3.6 km), takes you to the summit of

the Schauinsland in just 20 minutes while you

enjoy wonderful views of Freiburg, the Rhine valley,

the Kaiserstuhl and the Vosges mountains. At the

summit station you will find many attractive offers

in the realms of culture, adventure, sport and

gastronomy. Technically-minded visitors can even

take a peek behind the scenes on a guided tour

while the lift is being operated. Once you are at the

summit station, it is easy to reach the famous

Eugen Keidel viewing tower by foot. A little further

below, the summit there is the entrance tunnel to

the Schauinsland Mining Museum, the largest

silver mine in Southern Germany. Guided tours are

available here from May to October. You can also

go on some fantastic hiking tours through the

incredible beauty of the natural world on the

Schauinsland and in Winter the marked cross

country ski trails and Alpine descents are perfect

for skiing!

Tip: Download the free Audio-Tour onto

your smart phone before you arrive and get

straight into a world of exciting stories on all

aspects of technology, history and nature as you

ascend the mountain in the cable car.

B 5

Two big ski tow lifts carry 2,000 people per hour above the Northern slope of the mountain, which is

guaranteed to have snow, over a distance of 800 m to the summit station. Our smaller ski lift on the

Southern side of the mountain covers a distance of 200 m and a difference in altitude of 50 m. The ride is

therefore substantially shorter and flatter, and is therefore ideally suited for children and ski beginners.

Below the valley station, we have, for our younger visitors, a free kindergarten lift covering a distance of

60 m. In all there are 800 free car parking spaces which are situated right next to the valley station.
