The official newsletter of the
American Youth Horse Council
IN THIS EDITION:
FROM THE PRESIDENT
MESSAGE
Debbie Manring
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family safe and well as we adjust to
our ever-changing new normal. Some of you may be working on the front
lines in health care or essential businesses. Some of you may be trying to
balance working from home with teaching and caring for children. Whatever
challenges you are facing we will get through this together. On a positive
note this has been a time to slow down from the usual fast pace of life. Have
you started looking at things from a different perspective? Have you been
focusing on what is important in your life? Have you been focusing more on
helping others and taking the time to reach out to them?
Take some deep breaths. Take the time to enjoy a walk. Use this time to
connect. Our connection with horses can help us get through these difficult
times. Time spent grooming, in the saddle or cleaning the barn can help deal
with stress. Together we are stronger. Take care of you, your family, friends
and neighbors.

“I would not be the
horsewoman I am today
without Amy’s life
lessons and knowledge
of the horse industry.”
Award Sponsored by
AYHC LEADER OF THE YEAR
DR. AMY SNOVER
In addition to her role as a long time 4-H horse club
leader, Amy serves on the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse
Development Committee as the chairperson. Additionally,
Amy is the current president of the Pennsylvania
Percheron Association where she places an emphasis on
youth as she sees them as the future of the industry. This
includes being an advocate, clinician and mentor. She has
taken several youth to participate in the Percheron
Congress. Not busy enough, Amy is also the current
President of Susquehanna Valley Corral, a riding club in
her home county. As president she campaigns to keep the
facility afloat as her vision of the horse world is inclusive
of the local level as well. She has equal respect for the
backyard riders as she does for those who can afford the
higher levels. She works to keep youth active in this club
as well. Additionally, she opens the facility for all 4-H
shows, clinics, and practice sessions for all surrounding
counties. Also an active 4-H leader of the club she was a
member of as a youth, she shares her knowledge, time and
personal horses and/or equipment to any members who
can benefit. She will give all club members lessons. The
only thing she has ever requested in return is for those
kids who take advantage of this opportunity is for them to
someday pass it forward. She organizes the county round
up and serves on the district horse show staff. Amy has
been instrumental in the development of the
Pennsylvania Driving Horsemanship Skills program and
participates state-wide as a skills tester, measurer,
clinician for driving skills, and so much more. She has also
been a key volunteer at the Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse
Show and the Jr Horse Championship Show for countless
years. Congratulations Dr. Amy Snover!

“Laura has
impacted my whole
life through her
leadership.”
Award Sponsored by
AYHC STUDENT LEADER OF THE YEAR
Laura Shoutz
Laura Shoutz is a stellar example of leadership and
ambassadorship for the youth equine industry. Laura has
proactively worked to develop a drill team in Meeker
County 4-H. Not only did she lead the charge to develop
the team, she secured coaches, chaperones, and leased
her own horses to youth who wanted to ride in a drill
team but did not own a horse. Several of these youth were
new to horses, so Laura volunteered her time to work
with each rider on horsemanship and improving riding
skills. Laura has served on the Minnesota Horse Project
Development Committee for many years as a youth
representative. This group is responsible for designing
and leading the programming that happens for the horse
project for the county. Through this committee, she has
helped introduce youth to horses through I Wish I Had a
Horse Day Camp, an experience that has happened for
the past three summers in Meeker County.
She has been one of the primary youth leaders of the
experience, sharing with the participants what it takes to
care for a horse as far as grooming, feeding, exercise, and
more. This group coordinates an overnight camp
experience for 4-H horse project members that allows for
bonding between participants and education as they bring
in guest speakers to talk and educate about various horse
related topics. Laura is always there to encourage others
to get involved, work hard, and keep growing through the
4-H Horse Project. Laura doesn’t just talk the talk, she
challenges herself within the industry as well. While she
definitely sets goals for herself, she takes pride in helping
others succeed rather than focusing on her own
accomplishments. Laura has truly found a passion in
connecting kids and horses. Congratulations Laura
Shoutz!
This Program “...does an incredible job of teaching young
4-Hers to use skills they have learned... organization,
determination, patience and communication and
translates those skills into professional situations...

YOUTH HORSE COUNCIL GRANT PROGRAM
AMERICAN
Among its many projects, the AYHC annually awards grant funding to quality
youth leader and youth programs. The primary intent of AYHC’s grant program is
to assist groups and help provide training to volunteer leaders, which will enrich
the horse experiences of our youth. A secondary goal of this grant program is to
provide assistance to high impact activities which promote or fulfill the mission of
AYHC with direct service to youth that promotes the youth horse industry. AYHC
offers one grant cycle per year. Applications for funding are due in October of the
year prior to the prospective event.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications must be received in the AYHC office no later than October 15 of the
current year. AYHC only has one grant cycle each year so the grants submitted
should be for projects after October 15 of the application year.
Membership. All applicants must be AYHC members. You may submit
membership at the time of application.
Requirements. Funding proposals should include the following:Evidence that
the program is related to the development, promotion and management of

youth by the development of adult/teen leadership skills for the enhancement
of the horse industry.
