THE FIRST female president

her long contribution to the
community.
Robyn Bisset received a
Queen’s Service Medal in the
Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

“It was very surprising – I’m really
amazed and proud. I haven’t had time
to absorb it”
Mrs Bisset has been a member of
the Rotary Club of Christchurch since
1993 becoming the president in
2009.
Over the course of 21 years, she
helped raise close to $1.3 million for
children’s charities in Canterbury
as part of the Rotary organising
committee it.
THe funding went to supporting
families in a range of charities such
as the Life Education Trust and the
Halberg Disability Sport Foundation.
“We felt there was a need to
specifically help children so a number
of us formed a committee to assist
these charities, with funding going
towards things like projects and
fundraisers,” she said.
“I’m delighted to be involved with
Rotary, doing something outside my
work environment, meeting people
from different walks of life and
sometimes going abroad.”
Mrs Bisset was born in
Christchurch and is the oldest of five
children. She has four children and
nine grandchildren.
She was a registered nurse and was
currently a board member of the
Burwood Academy
of Independent Living, a researchbased
organisation that helped people
with spinal cord injuries.
“Having worked at Burwood
Hospital many years ago, it resonated
with me to be a board member so it
has been very rewarding.”
‘It’s a
wonderful
feeling to be
able to give
back.’
– Robyn Bisset
Her charitable efforts did not
stop there; going on to become
the Canterbury Club’s first female
president since it was established 145
years ago.
“THe club is for professional
and business people. It’s a
lively environment, a great place
to have meetings and to get
working opportunities,” said Mrs
Bisset.
“It was a men-only environment
for a long time, but now 20 per cent
of members are women which feels
fantastic.”
Since 2004, she has been a
committee member of Friends of
The Nurses’ Memorial Chapel at
Christchurch Hospital and was
currently chairwoman of the trust.
Volunteer-run, the trust managed
the maintenance of the chapel as well
as provided a community space by
giving lectures and hosting meetings
every month.
“It’s a pretty important part of my
life.”
She was also a member of the St
George’s Hospital Inc Society and the
hospital’s advisory committee.
Even though volunteer work took
up much of her time, she played
the double bass for the Canterbury
Philharmonia orchestra and loved to
dabble in
a bit of gardening, cross-stitching,
knitting and staying active.
Said Mrs Bisset: “I would encourage
anyone to contribute to their
communities, you never know what’s
around the corner - look at how
Covid-19 decimated the world.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able
to give back, it’s terribly rewarding.
Whatever you give, you’ll most
certainly get back.”

Road safety concerns addressed
No-stopping
signs
for Prestons
subdivision
• By Bea Gooding
RESIDENTS’ fears of crashes
at a busy intersection in
their subdivision has led to
the approval of no-stopping
restrictions.
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board agreed to
install the restrictions on Te
Kereme St, in
Prestons, near
the intersection
with Te Korari
St.
The decision
followed
Stephen
Wright
reports from
neighbouring
residents with
safety concerns associated with
drivers crossing the centre line
in order to avoid parked cars
during peak traffic periods.
Te Kereme St intersected with
Te Korari St and is opposite the
southern access to Marshland

Primary School.
Because of this, there was high
short-term parking and traffic
demand before and after school
hours.
The city council acting
manager of transport operations
Stephen Wright said although
there had been no reported
crashes at this intersection,
concerns were still raised
about the vehicles parking in the
area.
“When a vehicle is parked
here, other drivers are required
to encroach onto the opposite
side of the road, therefore the
installation of a short length of
no-stopping lines to improve
safety was approved.”
By moving parking spaces
further away from the
intersection, it reduced the risk
of a head-on crash.
In Brief
GRANTS APPROVED
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board has
approved a grant of $11,200
last week to The Bridge South
Brighton Trust. The funding
will go towards the wages of
the community co-ordinator
and activator who will help
open a multi-activity space,
performance area and wellness
centre. A grant of $2000 was
also approved going towards
the operational costs of the New
Brighton community fridge
and pantry such as recycling,
waste removal and volunteer
recognition. The grants came
from the board’s discretionary
response fund.

Under the Covers
secrets of a Magazine editor - by Jenny lynch
Former editor Jenny Lynch takes the wraps off the unreported side of life in
print, explodes myths, unearths secrets and shows that even on seemingly
conservative publications such as the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly things
were seldom exactly as they seemed.
Her memoir, aptly titled “Under the Covers”, is a revealing account of what
went on behind the closed doors of various editorial offices and newsrooms
during one of the most colourful periods in magazine and newspaper
history. Lynch’s 30-year path to her top job was full of drama and off-beat
activities. But nothing she had experienced before she became editor of the
Weekly prepared her for the challenges that lay ahead.
Indeed, the magazine’s battle for dominance in what became known as The
Magazine Wars was fought against a backdrop of management turbulence and ownership changes.
Peppered with the names of those who have touched the author’s life, including the famous and the
fleeting, “Under the Covers” will appeal to everyone who enjoys reading about the ever-changing world
of print media.
A Natural Year
living simply through the seasons
by Wendyl nissen
Wendyl’s story of living the simple life in the country: gardening, foraging,
fishing and the freedom she has found in ageing.
Beautifully illustrated and including 100 new and delicious recipes.
A Natural Year follows writer Wendyl Nissen’s life in the peaceful New
Zealand countryside over one year.
It’s the story of what happens in her garden, her kitchen and her life over
twelve months, and the thoughts inspired by each passing season.
She writes about the freedom that she has found in ageing and the joy that
comes along with it. She addresses her depression, anxiety and the mental well-being she’s gained
from her back-to-basics lifestyle and the practical things she does to live in a sustainable, natural way.
With photographs taken at her home in Northland, Wendyl shares 100 new recipes, including how to
make yeast from grapes, yoghurt using chilli stalks and many others she has discovered.
Code Name Hélène - by ariel lawhon
This book is based on the life of Nancy Wake, an Australian expat who
worked as a reporter for Hearst in Paris just before WWII and later as a spy
for the British.
Lawhon throws readers into the middle of the action, as Nancy, under the
alias Hélène, prepares to parachute from an RAF plane into France to help
the Resistance in 1944, carrying in her head memorized lists of vital data,
including bridges targeted for destruction and safe house addresses.
After she lands, the story flashes back eight years, as Nancy struggles for
respect and recognition as a journalist; despite her firsthand observations
of Nazi brutality in 1930s Vienna, her editor is reluctant to publish a story
about what she’s seen. Frequent jumps in time draw out the arc of Wake’s
remarkable life; despite her statement early on that women’s weapons of
warfare were limited to “silk stockings and red lipstick,” by the end she’s
proven herself skillful at physical combat as well.
So Delish!
super easy, fresh meals for every day
by simone anderson
Social media star and bestselling author of Journey to Health, Simone
Anderson, serves up her favourite recipes.
So Delish! is jam-packed full of delicious, healthy recipes that you will want
to whip up every day. Beautifully styled and photographed, this book shows
you that good food can be easy to make and, what’s more, it can be really
tasty.
Simone’s philosophy on eating is that you should enjoy it, and she doesn’t
believe in denying yourself treats or restricting entire food groups. Her recipes are fresh and healthy,
and she loves to prepare light, beautiful meals.
Known as the platter queen, she’s created some amazing platters for this book, as well as heaps of
easy recipes for dinners, lunches, breakfasts and snacks.
Simone’s first book, Journey to Health, told how she lost a massive 92 kg in weight, how her story
went viral and how she’s created a new life as a social media influencer.
Our Game
new Zealand rugby at 150 - by ron palenski
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the first game of rugby
in Nelson; this book celebrates 150 years of New Zealand’s national
game, the game more than any other that has helped shape the New
Zealand psyche and identity. It will take the form of 150 short stories
- stories about the players, the teams, the provinces, the trophies,
everything that helped make the game what it is, from the first in
the horse and buggy days to the latest in the days of ultra-modern
technology. It will talk of players who no one living saw play; and it will
talk of players who are recognised wherever they go in the widening
rugby world. And who can talk of players and resist speculating who
the greatest of all might have been?
It’s opinions and speculation that make up some of the enduring appeal
of the game New Zealanders are (mostly) better at than anyone else.

SENIOR LIVING
Centuries old folk remedy
supports good health!
A fermented liquid health tonic offers an array
of powerful health benefits. It is none other
than the popular apple cider vinegar or ACV.
Since the time of Hippocrates – the “Father of
Medicine” – ACV has been renowned for its
curative properties.
In his popular book “ARTHRITIS and FOLK
MEDICINE”, DR. D.C. Jarvis reports how he
found that Vermonters who regularly consumed
ACV and Honey had excellent health with many
putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm
even when well into their eighties. He also noted
the effects of ACV and H on arthritis to be
remarkable with many patients reporting almost
total relief after taking a course of the mixture.
Dr. Jarvis surmised that the acid and potassium
in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits
and helped the body control calcium use. He
also noted that Vermonters who consumed ACV
and H around meal time had excellent blood
pressure and circulation. The reason he found
was that protein foods thickened the blood
and vinegar thinned it. As the blood thickens
it cannot pass as easily and quickly through the
blood vessels and capillaries. This poor blood
flow would reduce cellular health by limiting
nutrients to the cells as well as waste elimination
from the cells. To prevent cell damage the body
naturally increases blood pressure but this puts
more stress on the blood vessels, organs and
heart. Having ACV and H with meals will help
prevent protein raising the blood pressure. It
also contributes to a feeling of greater well-being
because the thinner blood circulates quickly and
more easily through the blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis
found regular consumption of CV and H to be
an excellent health tonic with numerous health
attributes.
ACV is highly nutritious as it contains all the
goodness of the apple in a form that is readily
accepted by the body. Good health starts with
good digestion and assimilation of nutrients.
ACV taken before food will stimulate and
promote healthy digestion and assimilation
of vital nutrients for good health. A wellfunctioning
digestive system helps prevent
disease by neutralising any toxic substances that
enter the body.
It is important to note not all ACV is produced
in the traditional way and results are likely to
prove disappointing with these other vinegars.
Marshall’s Premium ACV and ACV with 20%
Manuka Honey is produced in Canterbury from
organic whole apples in the traditional way. It is
double strength so you can use less.

Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
Daniel Jay
I’ve had all sorts of work done here from
basic servicing and warrants through to
major work like clutches, replacement
coilovers and bushings. Kevin is a very
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Lewis
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
12pm. So give Kevin a call on 982

to help with all your vehicle servicing
needs.
